56.
No Child Left Offline: Confronting the Mental Health Crisis in the Smartphone Era

 57.
As smartphones increasingly became a common item in students’ backpacks, many educators, including myself, saw a potential tool for enhanced learning. The reality, however, was far from what we anticipated. Instead of a learning aid, smartphones turned into the most pervasive distraction we’ve ever encountered in classrooms.

 58.
And here lies a paradox: while intended to connect us, these devices (along with social media apps) have spurred a mental health crisis among adolescents and teens, contributing to a marked decline in student engagement and learning.

 59.
Teachers are leaving the profession for various reasons, but many are blaming the decline in student behavior and focus and the incessant phone usage.

 60.

“We are forever elsewhere.” – Sherry Turkle

 61.
“We are forever elsewhere,” observes MIT professor Sherry Turkle, capturing the essence of our smartphone-dominated existence.

 62.
The simultaneous rise of the iPhone and social media brought unforeseen addictive behaviors, particularly detrimental to our youth.

 63.
Related: Protecting Students in a Digital World

 64.
And it’s poised to worsen with advances in AI—think addictive algorithms, inappropriate content, and the targeting of young users. This is a stark reality for Generation Z, which is described as having “a phone-based childhood.” This exposure to premature adult content and a virtual lifestyle is robbing them of essential childhood experiences and developmental milestones.

 65.
Consider this: we regulate children’s access to casinos, bars, and adult entertainment, yet we often hand them unlimited access to something arguably more harmful—the Internet.

 66.
This paradox is central to Jonathan Haidt’s “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” a NY Times Bestselling book I am currently engrossed in.

 67.

“My central claim in this book is that these two trends—overprotection in the real world and underprotection in the virtual world—are the major reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation.” – Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation

 68.
Haidt argues that we have OVERprotected our children in the physical realm while leaving them UNDERprotected in the digital world. (And he has research to back it up.)

 69.

 70.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! The book is filled with research. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy and read it for yourself.

 71.

 72.
Do you agree with his findings? As educators, classroom teachers, educational leaders, parents, and community members, do you see evidence of this in your school?

 73.
Related: Online Safety for Students at School (and at home)

 74.
Four Foundational Harms of a Phone-Based Childhood

 75.
Though I’m only halfway through, the compelling data presented compels immediate discussion. Here’s a glimpse at what Haidt calls the Four Foundational Harms of a phone-based childhood:

 76.

 77.
Sleep deprivation

 78.
Social deprivation

 79.
Attention fragmentation

 80.
Addiction

 81.

 82.
These harms are not just abstract concepts but every day realities impacting millions of students across the globe. With legislative efforts underway in various states and countries to impose age restrictions on social media, it’s clear that change can’t come soon enough.

 83.
Moreover, I am a firm supporter of the growing movement to ban phones from schools—a sentiment echoed by many fellow educators. If we are to tackle this crisis effectively, schools must be sanctuaries of learning and personal growth, not battlegrounds of digital distractions.

 84.
A Call to Action

 85.
It’s essential to recognize that change begins with us. Jonathan Haidt’s book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” not only outlines the problems but also empowers us with actionable steps to reclaim a healthier, more engaged childhood for future generations.

 86.
Here are Haidt’s recommendations:

 87.

 88.
No smartphones before high school (roughly age 14).

 89.
No social media before 16.

 90.
Phone-free schools.

 91.
Far more unsupervised play and childhood independence.

 92.

 93.
What do you think? Do you agree with these recommendations?

 94.
If so, here are ways you can join the movement and make a significant impact:

 95.

 96.
Educators and Schools: Implement phone-free policies and introduce more play-based learning environments. These steps can drastically reduce distractions and improve social interactions among students. Download the Educator Action Guide here. (I will be speaking on this topic soon and sharing new resources. Book me here.)

 97.
Parents: Start conversations with other parents about setting boundaries for smartphone and social media use. Establish norms that prioritize real-world interactions and delay the introduction of smartphones and social media until the teenage years.

 98.
Community Involvement: Spread the word using social media to raise awareness about the mental health crisis linked to digital overuse. Sharing resources and joining local movements can amplify the message and create larger community-based actions.

 99.
Legislative Action: Stay informed about and support legislative efforts that aim to protect children from the harms of unchecked digital access. By participating in these efforts, you can help shape policies that foster a safer digital environment for all children.

 100.
Personal Action: Reflect on your digital habits and consider how they influence the children around you. Leading by example can be a powerful way to demonstrate healthy digital habits.

 101.

 102.
By taking these steps, we can collectively work towards a future where technology enhances learning without compromising mental health. Join the movement to free the next generation from the unintended consequences of a phone-based childhood and help pave the way for more meaningful and developmentally appropriate experiences.

 219.
This blog post is sponsored by EVERFI.

 220.
Students today have more interest in personal finance than ever before. Combine that with access to seemingly endless information online, and it’s no surprise that the financial advice hashtag #fintok has been viewed over 4.7 billion times on TikTok. Financial literacy education in schools is a great way to make students think about being savvy consumers of information outside of school. EVERFI believes that hands-on experience with real-world simulations is the best way to prepare students for financial success now and in the future.

 221.
Celebrating Financial Literacy Month with EVERFI

 222.
April’s Financial Literacy Month is the perfect time to satisfy students’ interest in Financial Education and show them how we support their journey to become successful young adults. We believe it’s never too early (or too late!) to get students started on that journey. EVERFI offers FREE Financial Literacy resources for elementary, middle, and high school students!

 225.
Did you know that financial attitudes, habits, and norms develop the most during the ages of 6-12? Do you remember shopping in the grocery store, reading prices, or tagging along to the bank to deposit a check? These are all the start of building financial habits, even if we don’t know it!

 226.
One of the greatest activities you can do with your elementary students is working on the concept of wants vs needs. Check out the financial literacy lessons for elementary students to do just that while even exploring career options and supporting others through charities.

 229.
Middle school students are learning independence and crafting their identities so they can hone in on what activities and futures they want to pursue. It’s also the perfect age to embed financial literacy activities and project-based learning into your career lessons or even social studies activities.

 230.
One idea comes from FutureSmart’s Building a Business lesson – students have the opportunity to see what goes into budgeting and marketing for a business all through simulated experiences. Take this digital learning off-screen and have students create their own businesses. It’s amazing to see what they can create and how many ‘a-ha’ moments arise!

 233.
For many high school students, this is where reality kicks in: Soon enough, you’ll be deciding what the next steps out of high school are, the W-2 you receive will be part of your yearly taxes, and opening a loan at some point in your life will most likely happen.

 234.
From math and business classes to advisory periods, there’s a way to seamlessly integrate financial education but why not start with what your students want to know first? Provide them with the opportunity to select from a variety of topics [banking, entrepreneurship, using payment apps, the stock market, etc] and give them the tools they need to dive deeper into the concepts they are most interested in. Not only does this create buy-in from your students, but they become the experts to teach others how to set up successful pathways.

 235.
Try EVERFI in Your Classroom!

 236.
Financial literacy plays a critical role in shaping our students’ futures. It extends beyond the classroom; it’s a vital life skill that influences future well-being and success.

 237.
By leveraging EVERFI’s dynamic and comprehensive financial literacy resources, we offer students from elementary through high school the knowledge and tools they need for informed financial decision-making.

 238.
As we celebrate Financial Literacy Month, let’s pledge to do more than just teach financial concepts.

 239.
Let’s commit to empowering our students with the confidence and skills to navigate their financial journeys successfully. Together, we’re not just preparing students for the future; we’re equipping them to redefine it.

 273.
Unleashing Creativity in the Classroom: How Night Zookeeper Sparks Students’ Imagination

 274.
What is Night Zookeeper?

 275.
Night Zookeeper is an educational online program for children aged 6 to 12+ (Grades 1 to 6) that uses gamified learning to help them develop reading and writing skills.

 276.
It offers a full language arts curriculum while transforming “boring school work” into fun and engaging games, challenges, interactive lessons, and collaborative projects – children often don’t even realize they’re working!

 277.
Night Zookeeper also provides a safe space for all children, including awesome community and blog pages which they’re free to explore and use to further improve their reading and writing skills.

 278.
A team of highly qualified tutors reviews all content shared within the program.

 279.
Are you ready to make reading and writing fantastically fun for your students?

 280.

 281.
*Related: 3 Essential Guides for Teachers: Adapting Instruction to Every Student Ability

 282.
At its core, Night Zookeeper is designed to make learning fun and engaging. The platform revolves around a captivating world where students create and interact with magical animals, embark on quests, and engage in creative writing challenges. It’s this blend of storytelling and interactive gameplay that captures the imagination of young minds, making them excited about learning.

 283.

 284.
One of the most significant ways Night Zookeeper sparks creativity is through its focus on creative writing. Students are encouraged to write stories, poems, and reports about their unique magical animals. This not only helps improve their writing skills but also allows them to express themselves in a safe, imaginative environment. As they create their narratives, they learn the power of language and storytelling, skills vital in all areas of education and life.

 285.

 286.
Another aspect where Night Zookeeper shines is in its ability to personalize learning. Every student’s journey is unique, with the platform adapting to their specific learning pace and style. This personalized approach ensures that students remain engaged and motivated, as tasks are neither too easy nor too challenging. 352.
3 Essential Guides for Teachers: Adapting Instruction to Every Student Ability

 353.
by Mary Pembleton from Texthelp

 354.
As an accessible technology company, Texthelp is always looking for ways to support educators with the diverse learning needs in their classrooms.

 355.
To help, our content team recently asked five experts to share their best tips: a researcher, two teachers turned education journalists, an accessibility consultant, and one AT specialist.

 356.
Get the Guides!

 357.
They gave us excellent advice, and from it, we created three downloadable guides:

 358.

 359.
A guide about inclusive reading instruction

 360.
A guide to supporting English Language learners in general education classrooms

 361.
A guide to essential accessibility practices in schools and classrooms.

 362.

 363.
…with more on the way.

 364.
These guides include advice for administrators and MTSS teams, loads of research studies, and lots of quick tips for educators who need simple ways to adapt grade-level instruction to the different levels of abilities, backgrounds, and needs in their classrooms.

 365.
Below are six of their best tips. To gain more, head over to the Texthelp website to get the complete guides delivered to your inbox.

 366.
1. Turn on captions when teaching as another way for students to take in information.

 367.
It’s easy, free, and super-supported by research.

 368.
Turn on live captioning in Google Slides as a visual aid in the classroom, even if you aren’t using a slide deck to teach.

 369.
Who it benefits, and how:

 370.

 371.
Learners who are deaf/hard of hearing by allowing them access to the content in an alternative way

 372.
English Language Learners by helping with pronunciation, language acquisition, and comprehension

 373.
Learners who are learning to read by increasing exposure to print and building literacy skills

 374.
All learners by improving comprehension, attention, and memory of the video content

 375.

 376.
How to do it:

 377.

 378.
To display the captions in a captioned video, simply click the “CC” button.

 379.
To add live captions to any lesson you teach verbally, you can enable live captions with one quick adjustment in Google Slides.

 380.

 381.
Here’s how to set up live captions in a Google slide presentation:

 382.

 383.
Ensure your computer’s microphone is on

 384.
Click or enable “Present” in Google Slides

 385.
At the bottom left of your screen, select “More options.”

 386.
Click “Captions Preferences”

 387.
Toggle captions on.

 388.

 389.
Now, when you speak, live captions will appear on your screen or smartboard.

 390.
For more information about live captioning options in Google Slides, visit the “Present slides with captions” section of the Google Help Center here.

 391.
2. Teach with a microphone.

 392.
Remote Microphone Systems were created for people who have difficulties hearing, and are often used as an assistive technology in the classroom.

 393.
Casual microphone use by a classroom educator should never replace necessary assistive technology support. However, the voice amplification offered by any microphone could be a helpful tool for engaging students who have trouble with listening, students with autism, and lend a hand with classroom management.

 394.
Pair sound amplification with free live captioning in Google Slides, listed above, for added benefit.

 395.
3. Have students record themselves reading, and listen back to it.

 396.
To help learners of all abilities with their reading skills, ask them to record themselves reading a text out loud and then listen back to it. This helps struggling readers, beginning readers, and ELLs improve their reading fluency.

 397.
4. Use visuals to supplement instruction automatically.

 398.
Including visuals in your instruction is a great way to build understanding in all learners, particularly EL Learners and learners with autism, who benefit from the easily understandable additional context of visuals.

 399.
To empower learners with one-click visuals while reading, try Read&Write’s visual dictionary tool. Learners can click on an unfamiliar word in a text, and the visual dictionary feature will give them a picture to help them understand it.

 400.
Related: How to Create a Dynamic Reading Experience

 401.
5. Give everyone the same required readings, and show students how to adjust the reading level.

 402.
Rewordify is a free tool that allows learners to automatically adjust the reading level in any text to adapt any digital content to their ability.

 403.
Read&Write also offers a Rewordify feature, which allows students to adjust their reading levels wherever they are reading.

 404.
6. Play an audiobook while having students read along from a physical text.

 405.
Complex texts and grade-level content benefit all learners, but are also not accessible to everyone. One way to normalize accommodations and make content accessible to everyone in class is to play an audiobook while students read along with a physical text.

 406.
Another benefit is that bimodal presentation, or providing both audio and written forms simultaneously boosts processing speed and information recall.

 407.
For additional ways to make learning more accessible to everyone in class, visit the Texthelp website’s Tier 1 is for Everyone page.
