21.

Expanded 2026 World Cup finals have given hope to Igor Stimac’s side but the Lions of Khorasan had other ideas

Perhaps the one positive for India from their shock 2-1 home defeat by Afghanistan in 2026 World Cup qualification is that the team have risen far enough for shock defeats to be a thing. It is not much of a comfort, however, and once solid-looking dreams of reaching the final stages on the road to the World Cup for the first time are starting to hang by delicate threads of Assam silk.

On Thursday, fans in that state’s biggest city, Guwahati, were confident of a comfortable win against Afghanistan, a team ranked 158 in the world. The 0-0 draw between the two five days earlier in the south-west corner of Saudi Arabia, rather than in Kabul, was surely a blip. Qatar were streaking ahead in Group A of qualification, leaving India and Kuwait to fight for the second spot that also brings a place in the final 18 that will fight it out for Asia’s increased World Cup allocation of eight. India had four points from the first three games and could have moved four points clear of third with two games to go.

 40.

 41.

Fifa and the presumptive hosts face significant challenges over human rights, worker protections and the scale of construction

Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup. We know this, despite the fact that Fifa’s bidding process does not finish until the end of 2024. But with 10 years until the tournament there is still much we don’t know. Some of these issues are important, such as the time of year in which the games will be played, but others are more significant still. With the power of the global football community to influence outcomes perhaps at its peak, here are three key areas of uncertainty:

 90.

As the Gulf kingdom bids to host a World Cup that will see its reliance on cheap foreign labour soar, planeloads of men already return daily to Dhaka, gaunt, dazed and broke

Among the joyful family reunions at the arrivals gate at Dhaka’s international airport, one group of travellers stands out. These men appear gaunt and dazed, most of them carrying nothing but a thin blanket they picked up on the plane. They wear tracksuits and blue rubber sandals or shoes without laces. Some walk barefoot.

All have just been deported from Saudi Arabia, and each day they arrive by the planeload. Nearly 70,000 Bangladeshi migrant workers were deported from the Gulf kingdom in 2022, mostly for not having a valid residence permit, known as an iqama.

 114.

Campaigners warn Fifa over risk of death toll rising once 2034 preparations start, after Guardian investigation reveals most of the thousands of Bangladeshi workers’ deaths are unexplained

Another World Cup will be tainted by worker deaths if Fifa fails to act, say rights groups

An ambulance is weaving through the chaos of the cargo depot at Dhaka’s international airport, navigating a careful route through trolleys stacked high with boxes, men hauling rolls of cloth and trucks reversing into loading bays. It stops and, shortly afterwards, from between the towering piles of goods, a coffin is wheeled out. Then another. And another. On this one day, the bodies of 10 migrant workers are being returned from Saudi Arabia back home to their families in Bangladesh.

Among those present to meet the coffins is Khadija Begum, whose 35-year-old husband, Abdul Jalil Shaikh, had gone to work in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of 2023. He left with his family’s dreams on his shoulders and now is coming back in a wooden box, most of his 500,000 taka (£3,750) debt – the price he paid a recruitment agent for his job – returning with him.

 165.

 166.

The shameful treatment of women’s football after an unofficial tournament in Mexico in 1971 is the subject of this absorbing documentary

Both Fifa and the UK’s Football Association have had an awful lot to be ashamed of over the years, but hardly anything as bad as the breathtakingly spiteful, sexist and dishonest way they treated women’s football in the last century, particularly after the spectacular success of the 1971 Women’s World Cup in Mexico, an independent event defiantly held outside Fifa’s pompous auspices and discussed now in this riveting documentary.

An independent women’s football association had held its inaugural Women’s World Cup in Italy in 1970 with sponsorship from Martini vermouth. Then, a year later, they staged their ambitious Copa 71 in Mexico with fixtures in two national venues which Fifa couldn’t control: the Jalisco stadium in Guadalajara and, in Mexico City, the Azteca stadium. The capacity crowds and the euphoric atmosphere were staggering. So conditioned are we to the sexist view of football that the extraordinary archive footage of the crowds for Copa 71 feels like some alt-reality hallucination. But afterwards the FA and Fifa dedicated themselves, almost like the Men in Black waving their amnesia devices in everyone’s face, to denying its success, forgetting it ever happened, clamping down on the venues and facilities and punishing the women for their success.

 189.

 190.

Claiming football’s greatest prize has not dulled the Liverpool midfielder’s thirst for glory before Sunday’s Carabao Cup final

A World Cup winner’s medal could symbolise an ending of sorts to some players, a mission completed, the pinnacle conquered. When Alexis Mac Allister looks at his, and he has done every day since 18 December 2022, he sees the beginning. Argentina’s triumph over France ignited a craving in the Liverpool midfielder that is some way from being satisfied.

The Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday is Mac Allister’s first opportunity to win a trophy with Jürgen Klopp’s team and the first cup final of his senior club career. There has been success on the international stage of course, from Argentina’s under-23s to the ultimate glory in Qatar, and a league title on loan at Boca Juniors. Mementoes from them all will eventually go in a museum that Mac Allister has planned for the family home. But there is space to fill.

 212.

Swedish footballer with superb close control and great pace who helped his country to the 1958 World Cup final

The Swedish footballer Kurt Hamrin, who has died aged 89, was a star of the 1958 World Cup when Sweden reached the final and was a major hit in the Italian league during the 1950s and 60s with Fiorentina and Milan, with whom he won major European honours.

The 1958 finals, played in Sweden, showed Hamrin at his dynamic best on the right wing. With a low centre of gravity, superb close control and great pace, he was a key figure in his country’s passage to the final. Sweden’s Yorkshire-born manager, George Raynor, characterised his players as “the slowest in the competition” but this could scarcely have applied to the fleet-footed Hamrin.

Now she has her sights set on 2026

When Sarjo Baldeh was 20, she was given a Canon T6 as a birthday present. She was thrilled to have her own camera after spending her teenage years practising with borrowed equipment.

“Cameras are expensive in my country and are often imported from abroad, so you have to save for years to be able to buy your own,” says Baldeh.

 253.
The 2026 World Cup final is in … New Jersey? A brief guide to the MetLife Stadium

 254.

 255.

1990 had Rome, 2006 had Berlin, 2014 had Rio and 2026 will have East Rutherford. So how did Fifa decide on the venue?

The World Cup final is being held in New Jersey? As in the industrial hellscape at the start of the Sopranos? And the Jersey Shore? The kind of place where guys eat sloppy steaks? Well technically, yes. But this is really a New York City final: MetLife stadium is only seven miles from Manhattan, and sits very close to the New York/New Jersey border. That the biggest match in world football will take place in (OK, very near) the biggest city in the United States makes sense [Disclaimer: New Jersey also has friendly people, beautiful countryside, charming small towns and stunning coastline].

And because it’s the World Cup final and it’s in the richest country in the world, no doubt MetLife is a breathtaking venue. Well, the stench that sometimes wafts in from the nearby Meadowlands marshes is breathtaking. But, aside from that, the stadium itself is … fine? There’s nothing offensive about the MetLife – it’s not falling down or anything and it seats plenty of people – around 82,000 or so. But it doesn’t have the history of the Azteca, the venue for the tournament’s opening match, or the space-age feel of Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium, which will host two of the United States’ group-stage games.

 302.

 303.

Lise Klaveness concerned by lack of transparency

‘It’s one year after the World Cup, it should come now’

The football executive who has sought to hold Fifa to its commitments on human rights in Qatar has called on the governing body to publish its report on possible failings at the World Cup.

Lise Klaveness, the president of the Norwegian Football Federation, wrote to Fifa a year ago calling for an inquest into the legacy left by the Qatar World Cup and, specifically, a lack of financial remedy for mistreated migrant workers. In response the Fifa president, Gianni Infantino, commissioned a report from the organisation’s human rights and social responsibility subcommittee. That report is yet to arrive and Klaveness argues that a lack of transparency over publication speaks to a broader problem within Fifa.

 346.

I went to bed that night believing we’d be hammered for the unprofessional nature of our World Cup qualifier call, but it’s become iconic

Vote for your favourite Australian sporting moment

16 November 2005. The mere mention of the date brings instant recognition for any football fan in Australia. Most can remember exactly where they were, when 32 years of torment were released in torrents of raw emotion as John Aloisi’s penalty hit the back of the net.

Yet while that moment is seared into the public consciousness, accompanied by Craig Foster’s guttural yell of “Johnny Warren”, the backstory has largely faded into the mists of time. But the work done behind the scenes was a major reason why Australia qualified that day, by the barest of margins.

The World Cup is a slightly odd tournament in that it’s pretty much never had a shock winner – maybe West Germany in 1954, but their subsequent performances have diminished what a surprise that felt at the time. Perhaps all that means is that we’re due a shock but there seems to be something about the magnitude of the occasion in the latter stages of the competition that ultimately benefits the elite.

Have a question for Jonathan? 407.

 408.
Brazilian footballer with an unrivalled record of success in the World Cup as both player and manager
Mário Zagallo, who has died aged 92, was the most successful footballer in the history of the World Cup. Many players who were more talented and managers who were more tactically astute have won the tournament, but none can equal the Brazilian’s record of four triumphs: two as a player, in 1958 and 1962, one as manager, in 1970, and another as assistant manager, in 1994. He looked destined to win a fifth World Cup in 1998, again as Brazil’s manager, before Ronaldo, the star of his team, suffered a seizure on the morning of the final, shattering the team’s morale.

Zagallo was also the first of only three men (Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer and France’s Didier Deschamps followed him) to win the tournament both as a player and as a manager; and he won with the two teams, of 1958 and 1970, that are widely regarded as the best ever to land the trophy. Yet in his home country he never received the full recognition that his achievements merited. His fiery temper and brusque, regimental air at a time when the country was run by a military dictatorship may have had something to do with that, as did his public persona in later years, when he became a cranky, almost comedic figure. Many Brazilians know him more for the riposte he famously growled at his critics – “you will have to put up with me” – than his sporting achievements.

 430.

Home of NFL’s Giants and Jets to remove seats in bid for final

AT&T Stadium in Arlington also in consideration for final match

NJ governor hopes MetLife will host Champions League final

MetLife Stadium officials plan to remove 1,740 seats to widen the field for World Cup matches as they hope to host the 2026 final but will retain a narrower surface for this year’s Copa América. The stadium in suburban East Rutherford, New Jersey, is among the contenders for the final of the expanded 48-nation, 104-game World Cup on 19 July 2026, along with AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“I speak on behalf of New Jersey but also as our partner of New York City, do not underestimate how aggressive we’re prepared to be to get the best package of games possible,” New Jersey’s governor, Phil Murphy, said during a telephone interview last fall.

 450.

Uncertainties abound over host country’s grand proposals – for both their mind-boggling scope and the potential human cost

When Fifa’s team of inspectors travelled to the north-west of Saudi Arabia a fortnight or so ago, they needed to bring vibrant imaginations. They were scoping out one of the probable venues for the 2034 World Cup but this was no usual reconnaissance mission. It is one thing when, more than a decade out, a stadium is unbuilt, but quite another when the same goes for an entire host city. Visualising a semi‑final between, say, England and Brazil is not straightforward when you are gazing into a trench.

That was the case when a delegation from football’s governing body visited Neom, a mind-boggling project whose centrepiece will be a high-rise line in the desert that measures 105 miles long and 200 metres wide, ultimately accommodating nine million people. The plans that have been released look akin to a video game. Details of its progress are closely guarded but excavation works are well under way and there is a pledge to begin moving people in by 2030. The city will contain several stadiums and if Saudi Arabia gets its way, which happens more often than not, Neom will become one of the most important sporting venues on Earth.
