49.
As we look back on Series 4’s most memorable tunes, I’d also like to mention how Skins also had some unforgettable musical moments created for the series back in the day. It might not be at epic the level of a Zendaya + Labrinth collaboration like what “Euphoria” had, but it was sure-as-hell entertaining. For young readers out there that might’ve stumbled on to this blog accidentally, you’ll probably remember when Rue breaks out into a musical number on “Euphoria” and everything started to look like a Zendaya music video. Skins sort of did that on Season 1, when Mike Bailey (Sid) suddenly launches into song and croons out his version of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World”, breaking the tension brought about by Tony’s accident and giving us a sweet little ending, with Sid and Cassie holding hands on the bench at Brandon Hill. As much as Skins was a teen drama, it also didn’t take itself too seriously, and oftentimes had a lot of comedic moments that was peppered throughout the series. Take Osama the Musical in Series 2 for example, where Skins’ fictional Roundview College ambitiously produces an original musical based on the 9/11 tragedy. Who could forget, that catchy tune “Then Came the Day Osama Blew Us Away”? Series 4 also brought a couple funny of musical moments like JJ and his mom singing songs with inappropriate lyrics – remember “I’m not racist, I like white ladies” or “I wanna be respectful but you suck on my p*ick”? Those songs by the way, were specifically created by Fat Segal (who also did the Skins intro) and Academy Award Winning actor Daniel Kaluuya. We also had that heartfelt number with Panda and her song “Don’t Be Down” – a song to make Effy feel better at the hospital just because songs are better than grapes.. and grapes are for chipmunks. And best yet was JJ’s serenade to Lara, singing his own version of Spandau Ballet’s True accompanied by the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain.

 50.
There were also, still, the songs we got introduced to, just because we were watching the series. And boy, there were tons.

 51.
Here are a couple of our favourites from Skins Series 4:

 52.
I Knew by Lightning Dust

 53.

 54.
This was not in any of the episodes for the Skins, but, it was used in the Skins Series 4 promo. I couldn’t find any footage or trailer that had the song, but I specifically remember watching the trailer and the song playing as they showed Naomi and Emily driving around in their scooter, and the beats matching up as Emily spun around the zoetrope that she found in Sophia’s room. Lightning Dust’s “I Knew” only runs at around two minutes long, but it’s so jam packed with the kind of sounds that make your heart thump and make you feel all those wonderful feelings – this is definitely one song that you’ll want to hear on repeat.

 55.

 56.
Every Third Sunday by 6 Day Riot

 57.

 58.
The early to mid 2000s was the peak of indie-pop so we certainly had a lot of that in Skins episodes. This one is from Thomas’ episode – the first one for this series. Things are slowly going south for Thomas and his realization that his friends and his relationship with Panda, might not be the best influence gradually dawn on him with “Every Third Sunday” playing in the background. What better way to have life changing realizations than with fanfare, right?

 59.

 60.
Skeletons by Tiny Masters of Today

 61.

 62.
On the show’s second episode is an episode centered around Sophia, a teen who dramatically plummets to her death as a drug-induced haze prompts her to leap from a balcony in a club.

 63.
Also front and centre is Naomi and Emily’s relationship. We hear Tiny Masters of Today’s “Skeletons” play as Emily and Naomi happily ride about in the city in their scooter, in true romantic bliss. Of course, this won’t be Skins if we didn’t have a dramatic conflict, right? Turns out SPOILER ALERT that Naomi cheated on Emily with Sophia before she committed suicide. Not only that, she was the one that sold the drugs to her (through Cook’s supply), the night Sophia died. I guess, the choice of “Skeletons” wasn’t just because it was upbeat and fun, but it also gives a sense of foreboding on just how some skeletons in Naomi’s closet are raring to come out.

 64.

 65.
Heavy Drug (Surrender Sounds Mix) by UNKLE

 66.

 67.
This electronic classic from the mid 2000s is heard at one of the most pivotal point in what might be the best episode in the series. UNKLE’s “Heavy Drug” plays while Cook reaches a turning point in his life. He’s been the antagonist for most of the series, but we finally get why in this episode. We found out in the last season that he’s got an alcoholic dad who abandoned him, and this episode reveals a narcissitic mom – a well-off artist mom – that is as much of an absentee parent as his dad. Cook’s facing some legal issues too – having severely beaten up someone at a party. His mom is too fed up with his antics to help. While out on a rebellious spree of property destruction with his younger brother, it suddenly dawns on to him how much of a Cook mini-me his brother is turning out to be. This realization prompts him to change and take responsibility for his actions. Cue “Heavy Drug”. As it plays in the background, we see Cook, pleading guilty to his charges and taking the fall for selling the drugs to Sophia. Given the circumstances, despite how despicable Cook’s been in the past, we’re sort of rooting for him. It takes real guts to try to stop that cycle – of people blaming things on everything else but themselves (which I’m sure as hell his parents did) and totally own it.

 68.

 69.
Wrong by Micachu & The Shapes

 70.

 71.
Once it a while we get some experimental and quirky tunes in the Skins soundtrack. Micachu & The Shapes’ “Wrong” is that song in Skins Series 4. We hear this in the background as Katie and her mom come to Naomi and Emily’s place to ask if they could stay due to their house being repossessed. In this situation, the chaotic clanging of instruments work perfectly as it seems like everything is turning out wrong – not only for Katie’s family, but also for Naomi and Emily;s relationship.

 72.

 73.
Betamax by Fonda 500

 74.
8 Bit Sound System by Fonda 500

 75.
I’ve always loved JJ’s episodes. Most of the time, they’re pretty much self-contained. Last season, they opted to use classical music for JJ’s soundtrack – particularly Debussy. This time, it’s a more varied lot with a couple of instrumental electronic music. I love this track by Fonda 500 – “Betamax” plays out as JJ babysits for the first time where he spectacularly fails. It’s also one of the nicer episodes in the series that despite of JJ’s travails of being a neurodiverse person fitting into the “normal” world, we still get this nice hopeful ending for him…. as opposed to the actual ending of this particular season.

 76.

 77.
They Stay Down Deep by Giselle Rosselli

 78.

 79.
This quirky, yet haunting song by Giselle serves as the soundtrack to the loved up Effy and Freddie in the show’s second to the last episode. Here we find out that Effy, despite getting professional help, is still not well. Her counsellor, the evil John Foster, has done some voodoo that forced traumatic memories to stay down deep (as Giselle’s song goes). Effy forgets everyone that traumatized her, Cook and Freddie included. Freddie eventually comes to the rescue, and we all know how that went.

 80.

 81.
So Many No’s by Francois & The Atlas Mountains

 82.
Under Concrete – Compilation 2012 by François and The Atlas Mountains

 83.
“We are all living lies. Reality, as the Sophists has all elegantly informed us, is all relative.” – Professor Blood

 84.
Taken out of context, that quote sounds pretty profound, but it’s actually what the principal said to Effy to justify changing her grades to make their school standing better. In the background? “So Many No’s” by Francois & The Atlas Mountains.

 85.

 86.
Take it with you by The Ettes

 87.

 88.
“Take It With You” by The Ettes kick off the gang’s last party before the series ends. Freddie’s still missing, but they have a farewell party of sorts. We also get the much awaited Naomi + Emily reunion, where they eventually patch things up with Naomi’s heartfelt declaration of love.

 89.

 90.
Set And Setting by Nice Nice

 91.
Extra Wow by Nice Nice

 92.
“Set and Setting” by Nice Nice is the last song we hear as Cook launches his attack on John Foster shouting “I am COOK!” like a battlecry. We don’t see anything afterwards and that leaves us with so many questions. Like, why are we left with a cliffhanger that will never be properly resolved? Why does somebody have to die every other season? Why do I keep on watching this show even when the storylines frustrate me?

 93.
As much as a lot of people really loved the first batch of Skins characters, I think they delivered pretty well on this second batch too. We got fan favourites like Effy and Cook, Naomily became a thing, and JJ – an autistic character that didn’t pander to the stereotypical view of autism, was also introduced. The music choices, as always, were pretty much solid – nothing as iconic as ending the series with MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” or as career launching as setting a Skins party to Foal’s “Hummer” but excellent nonetheless.

 94.
Next week, we’ll continue to look back on the next generation of Skins, which also was the last new batch, and the music that it popularized.

 125.
You can’t talk about Skins without talking about the music.

 126.
By the time Series 3 hits, the show had already established itself as a launchpad for new artists or the next big thing in music – mostly alternative music, but still, excellent music. None of the kind that would make Rick Beato lament about the sorry state of popular music today. We were hearing musicians that truly made music, played actual instruments and offered something really unique.

 127.
Series 3 packs it in, and it also goes to include some current hits in the pop charts like Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Kanye West. It also introduces a new batch – something original fans had a little bit of trouble getting used to, but by the end of the season, one could say that this might have been the best season yet in terms of memorable and interesting characters. In fact, almost half of the cast reprised their roles in a special season of Skins that would mark the end series (compared to Generation 1 and 2 that is, where only one came back from the first generation and zero from the last).

 128.
The only thing bridging Series 2 to 3 is Effy – Tony’s sister, their old school where Effy and the rest of the Skins gang are attending, and curiously, Sid’s locker and porn stash. As per usual, there’s sex, drugs and lots of hedonistic behaviour, as well as very terrible parents and an equally terrible school.

 129.
Let’s jump in to the music shall we?

 130.

 131.
Nefi + Girly by Asobi Seksu

 132.

 133.
Nefi + Girly heralded the new generation of Skins as it was used in the promotional trailers for the new batch and the third series of Skins. As we curiously await what Series 3 might hold, we were treated with New York band Asobi Seksu’s catchy single “Nefi + Girly”. This was far from the dancey, angsty introduction of the first generation via Gossip’s “Standing in the Way of Control”. In contrast, “Nefi + Girly” is a nice mix of sweet, but edgy – pairing frontwoman Yuki Chikudate’s gentle voice with noisy guitars, and adding just a bit of electronic music and a steady drumbeat to match that feeling of rapt anticipation. The song also plays out at the end of the first episode while previews of the upcoming season play.

 134.

 135.
Pillow Case Kisser by Skinned Teen

 136.

 137.
This song used in the third episode of the season as a background to Thomas and Pandora’s meet-cute. I just love that they’ve thrown this in early on in the series. It’s a call back to early 90’s riot grrrl music, and not just any other riot grrl music, it was riot grrl music of the UK variety. Unlike other songs that are used to add some emotional depth to a scene or enhance the mood or setting, this is the type of song that you add, just because. To someone hearing it, it’s like a surprise present – unexpected but a pleasure to have.

 138.

 139.
Breaker – Low

 140.

 141.
Speaking of 90’s bands, here’s another one on the list. This song was played in the closing scenes to Pandora’s episode as things get a little bit more complicated in terms of Panda’s love life. I’d like to believe that they actually wanted this for Cook’s episode especially with how Cook ate his whole birthday cake all by himself – crumbs and all. “Breaker” may be from a 90’s band, but this one was a later release from Low taken from the 2007 album “Drums and Guns” – their latest album at that time.

 142.

 143.
Jump In by High Places

 144.
03/07-09/07 by High Places

 145.

146. If there ever was a Skins pairing that was a big fan favorite, it was Naomi and Emily or Naomily for short. We’ve actually got a couple of awesome some songs from Naomi’s episode and one of these is “Jump In” by High Places. This was the song that was played as the two went on an idyllic bike ride in the country. If you’re wondering why the song’s title says that it’s for Gilkey Elementary School, it’s because the band composed it for vocalist Mary Pearson’s mom, who works as a teacher at the said school. It’s a song for the school’s theme of the year “Jump In” which is a motivational “go for it” theme.

 147.

 148.
Susanna and the Magical Orchestra – Believer

 149.
List Of Lights And Buyos by Susanna and the Magical Orchestra

 150.
If there ever was an official Naomily theme song, this would be it. After an exciting bike ride along the country, and a dip at the nearby lake, the girls set up camp in the woods where they consummate their love under the stars as Susanna and the Magical Orchestra’s “Believer” plays.

 151.

 152.
Lacrosse – You Can’t Say No Forever

 153.
This New Year Will Be for You and Me (Bonus Version) by Lacrosse

 154.
I’ve always loved this song my Swedish band Lacrosse, so I’m including it in this list. “You Can’t Say No Forever” plays right after Cook finds out that he’s been ditched by the gang so they can all party at Gobbler’s End. Their happy little road trip is punctuated by this song and also serves as a background when Pandora openly lies to Thomas when Cook gives her a ring on her mobile. Apparently, she couldn’t say ‘no’ forever because Cook is Cook and he eventually crashes his way though the woods to come to the party uninvited.

 155.

 156.
Bon Iver – Woods

 157.

 158.
This autotuned gem of a song by Bon Iver features heavily in Effy’s episode where they are literally in the woods. I’m actually starting to think that they try to choose their location shoots based on what cool songs they can shoehorn into the story. Remember New York? The scene in question is after Effy almost kills Katie while tripping on shrooms. Coming down from her high, she chances upon Freddie and they do it – in the dark, in the middle of the woods, without any concern for insects, wild animals and modesty (they were not in a tent!). At this point I’m concerned that all that drugs and marijuana have permanently damaged their teenaged brains. The only level headed person there seems to be JJ – the only neurodiverse individual in the group and maybe Thomas, who handled Pandora’s betrayal quite well.

 159.

 160.
Smalltown Boy by Andre Herman Dune

 161.

 162.
Andre Herman Dune brings a new spin to Bronski Beat‘s 80’s classic tune “Smalltown Boy”. This plays right after another rejection from Naomi which brings Emily to tears. “Smalltown Boy” was ranked as number 12 in The 50 Best Gay Songs to Celebrate Pride All Year Long by Time Out Magazine. The song, which has underlying themes of pain and rejection, depicts a story of a boy who flees hometown bullying. Andre Herman Dune pares it down from Bronski Beat’s synth-pop version, to an acoustic one, which matches the scene as a dejected Emily storms out of Emily’s house sans shoes and jacket and into the freezing cold.

 163.

 164.
Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping by Grouper

 165.
Dragging A Dead Deer by Grouper

 166.
These last two songs come from the same episode – “Naomi”. The whole episode actually has great songs all throughout which is probably why it’s a fan favourite. We go dream-pop with Grouper’s “Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping” which can be heard as Naomi confesses her feelings to Emily in the infamous hand-holding through the cat-flap scene. According to Genius, the song is about loving someone and leaving your comfort zone to be with them. Very apt song indeed.
167.
168. White Film by Noriko Tujiko

 169.

 170.
From the same episode, we also hear Noriko Tujiko’s “White Film”. This plays as Naomi cries her heart out. Not to leave you guys in too much of a sad mood, this is actually a feel-good song the more you listen to it. It only has four lines repeated over and over: “You’re so beautiful / Looking back to me / And now smiling at me / You’re so beautiful”. Coupled with Noriko Tujiko’s airy vocals and playful synths, how could you not feel calm and light after hearing it?

 171.

 172.
When I stared writing, I had to speed watch the entire series to get a good refresher. For a show that I actually ever watched only once when it aired, and didn’t really get into it much for this particular season – this season was pretty entertaining. I was actually looking forward to see the next one. Then I remembered, it always goes downhill when the current batch reaches a second season. Good thing the music is still solid. Until then, I’ll see you next week!

 201.
Skins was a teen drama series in the UK that ran from 2007 to 2013 – think a more edgier, sexier version of Degrassi or a predecessor to Euphoria (which I personally think would’ve been Skins if it was successfully adapted to the US audience). Skins stood out, being a show that gave importance to how relatable it was to the youth by casting actual teenagers to play teenagers and even employing them to their pool of writers. Much like a lot of youth oriented shows, music played a big part in Skins episodes, but somehow unlike a lot of shows at that time, Skins was very influential and managed to shape and define a whole generation’s music.

 202.
This week, we look back at the music in the show’s second season.

 203.
By the time that series two of Skins rolled out, the show was already a certified hit. This was also the last season with the original cast before a new batch replaced them as series regulars – a tradition carried on to future seasons with each batch only lasting two seasons each. Skins now has a massive following and with it, more songs to unpack in each episode.

 204.
It was hard to just to choose a few, but we’ve hand-picked these memorable songs from Series 2:

 205.

 206.
Hummer by Foals

 207.

 208.
In between Seasons 1 and 2, Skins produced a mini episode that was released online and made available through the show’s MySpace account. Remember when MySpace was a thing? MySpace at the time was THE place for bands to promote their music. Skins put this online platform to great use. Mostly known as the episode that propelled the band Foals to greater popularity, the Skins “Secret Party” follows the gang as they throw the ultimate raver in an abandoned church right smack in the middle of the forest. The party saw almost 300 fans as extras – winners of a contest held by E4 to be part of the Skins Secret Party. Foals would later on contribute a couple of more songs to the show’s soundtrack, but Hummer became their most downloaded song at that time, following the release of the “Secret Party” webisode.

 209.

 210.
Bad Before Good by Day One

 211.

 212.
Bad Before Good was featured in the first episode of the series entitled “Maxxie and Tony”. Maxxie, similar to the first season, shares this episode with another character from the series – but it’s not his best friend Anwar, this time it’s with Tony. It’s actually a shame that Anwar didn’t get an episode of his own; we could’ve used a bit more Dev Patel in season two as he is quite the scene stealer in any episode that he’s in. I also never really figured out why they always sidelined Maxxie. There was so much potential with that character. In any case, we do get a lot more of Maxxie dancing here as this song plays while he does his solo rooftop dance shown with a montage of the different characters going through tough times. The lyric “It’s gonna get bad before it gets good” gets repeated like a mantra as snippets of each characters’ woes are shown onscreen. As much as we wanted to believe that the bad stuff is going to get better in the next episode, this is just episode one and we all know Skins doesn’t like to shy away from putting their characters through a ringer.

 213.

 214.
Good Times Gonna Come by Aqualung

 215.

 216.
“Good Times Gonna Come” features in the second episode called “Sketch”. A new character is introduced, and it’s actually one of the better episodes in my opinion. The episode follows Sketch, who has a crush on Maxxie. Maxxie, unfortunately can’t return her affections as she’s not exactly his type, and not the typical gender he’s attracted to. She tries to downplay her femininity and leaves little gifts for Maxxie to find. She also stalks him – to the point of even breaking in to his room and pleasuring herself on his bed while “Good Times Gonna Come” plays in the background. If Aqualung sort of sounds familiar to you – you might know him from the song “Brighter Than Sunshine” which was featured heavily in the 2005 Ashton Kutcher movie “A Lot Like Love”, and most recently in the TV series Schitt’s Creek.

 217.
Interesting Trivia: Sketch’s episode was penned by Jack Thorne, who almost ten years later, co-wrote the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” with J.K. Rowling.

 218.

 219.
Alice Practice by Crystal Castles

 220.
Alice Practice by Crystal Castles

 221.
One of the most memorable songs in series 2, “Alice Practice” plays background to a dramatic scene of the third episode of the series. In the scene, we see best friends Sid and Tony at a club, while the actual band – Crystal Castles, make an appearance. The crowd rushes forward as the band begins to play, pushing Sid and Tony away from each other. In the ongoing chaos of teens wildly dancing, they eventually find each other and Sid grabs Tony tightly, pouring out his anger and grief as he slowly accepts his father’s death with “Alice Practice” drowning out his cries of despair. It’s a highly emotional episode, and we’re all shocked at the death of Sid’s dad (who’s perfectly played by Doctor Who himself – Peter Capaldi). I love that they amped up the selection of music in this series but they also amped up the drama. I honestly think they messed up the development of most of the characters in series two, but I guess the more drama the better the music?

 222.

 223.
Keep the Car Running by Arcade Fire

 224.

 225.
Before their Grammy Award winning album ‘The Suburbs’, Arcade Fire released ‘Neon Bible’ which featured a lot of fan favorite songs like “My Body is a Cage” – a song used in a couple of movies and TV shows (recently in the season one finale of “Euphoria”). “Keep the Car Running” was another popular song off the album. In Skins, we hear this on the fourth episode of the series as our group of teens head off to the beach to celebrate Michelle’s birthday. We actually have plenty of great songs in this episode alone, with two Sigur Ros songs featured as well as other songs from Pavement, XTC and the next band in our list.

 226.

 227.
Childhood by Beach House

 228.
Beach House by Beach House

 229.
This is one of two Beach House songs used in Skins’ “Michelle” episode. It plays as Michelle sits in between the sand dunes to have a chat with Maxxie, while the rest of the gang scramble to save Scarlett’s station wagon from getting swept away by the waves. This is actually a nice throwback to the first episode where they crashed a car into a lake – coincidentally, also a station wagon. I guess a season of Skins isn’t complete if you can’t totally submerge a whole car in water.
230. For this episode, Beach House aptly gives that “chillin’ by the seaside feeling” with its twangy surf guitars and Victoria Legrand’s soothing singing voice.

 231.

 232.
Fickle Cycle by Animal Collective

 233.

 234.
“Fickle Cycle” plays in the scene where Michelle receives a surprise gift from Tony, who’s trying to win her back. It’s one of those random, quirky songs that’s fun to listen to if you’re tired of the usual fare. This one comes as a B-Side to Animal Collective’s 7-inch release of “Grass” in 2006. I love that Skins will find odd gems and just jam it in the soundtrack for everyone to discover – even if it was just used in a very small scene.

 235.

 236.
Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

 237.

 238.
“Maps” didn’t feature heavily when it was used in the scene where Tony and Michell drive Sid off to the airport – it sort of just is this a random song playing on the car’s stereo. It might not be as memorable in the show as some of the songs in this list, or even some of the songs that didn’t make it to this list, but if I had an excuse to include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Maps” in any list, I would. It’s a song that screams 2000s, Skins is very 2000s and I don’t think a Skins soundtrack retrospective would be complete if I didn’t include this song here.

 239.

 240.
New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down by LCD Soundsystem

 241.

 242.
Having Cassie flee to New York, of all places, seemed so random. Why fly to a different country altogether? What’s in New York?

 243.
I have a theory. I think they chose to take Cassie to New York just so that they can have an excuse to use this absolute classic of a song – “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” by LCD Soundsystem. I’m not from New York and I’ve only visited once, but I think this song resonates to any person that lives in a big, highly populated, highly urban city. It might also be a metaphor to any long-term relationship that’s slowly going sour or to any situation where the disillusionment sets in, but you’re still attached. In any case, it’s LCD Soundsystem at it’s best and it should always, always, be suggested as recommended listening to all lovers of music.

 244.

 245.
Time to Pretend by MGMT

 246.

 247.
I do believe it was the Skins finale that actually pushed this song up the charts. As we say goodbye to all the characters that we’ve grown to love, MGMT’s “Time to Pretend” plays them off. This is one of the songs that I oh-so-terribly missed with the international release since they disappointingly replaced it with generic electronic music. That’s how you really know that the choice of song matters. “Time to Pretend” perfectly represented how it was to be of the ‘Skins’ generation at that time, it’s a shame it’ll get lost in translation for a lot of current viewers.

 248.
With this, the season ends with sort of a cliffhanger. The last we see of Sid is outside the New York diner that Cassie works at, and they don’t see each other. Does he eventually get the girl? Skins doesn’t offer a clear answer, but we do know that this will be the last we’ll see of Tony, Michelle, Sid, Cassie, Chris, Jal, Anwar and Maxxie (probably not Cassie as she does return to the Skins special years later). It’s quite amazing how memorable this particular cast of Skins was. This batch produced a couple of notable stars today: Nicholas Hoult who played Tony, who was already famous in “About a Boy”, got wider recognition playing The Beast on the X-Men movie series; Kaya Scodelario who played Effy, starred in the Maze Runner series; Chris and Cassie – Joe Dempsie and Hannah Murray, went on to play Gendry Baratheon and Gilly on Game of Thrones; we even got Anwar (Dev Patel) nominated for an Oscar in ‘Lion’; and Posh Kenneth (Daniel Kaluuya) winning one in 2021. (Another interesting trivia: Daniel Kaluuya might just be a supporting character in Skins, but he had a bigger role behind-the-scenes writing two Skins episodes).

 249.
Although, Season 2 was a big good-bye to our beloved Skins characters, Season 3 introduces us to newer, more complex characters, and a wider variety of music – something we’ll talk about in the next week’s article.

 272.

Happy International Women’s Day! Since it’s a day to celebrate all women, we’re making this day as a reason to feature one of our favourite female musicians – Caroline Polachek. After we’ve featured some of her music here, I’m pretty sure if you’re not already a fan of hers yet, you’ll probably want to have a reason to talk about her too – she’s that good.

 273.
Caroline’s currently on tour opening for Dua Lipa, along with French-American musician Lolo Zouaï, but did you know that before breaking out as a solo act, she’s done as couple of collaborations and started out as one-half of the synth-pop band Chairlift?

 274.
As our Featured Artist, we’re listing down our favourite Caroline Polachek songs –

 275.

 276.
1) So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings by Caroline Polachek

 277.

 278.
We actually debated if we’d include this song in the songs that made it viral on TikTok, but Caroline is just too awesome not to have her own list. “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” is not just a bop, it’s banger that actually went viral – thanks to the unique choroegraphy to the song, that’s not really much of a dance song to begin with. The dance, it just works. Paper magazine describes it as “campy but tasteful” – so you kind of get the appeal. If you’ve spent a significant amount if time on TikTok in the past couple of months, you’ve definitely encountered videos where people are just having fun with the choreography. Celebrities like Camila Mendes and Olivia Sui have jumped in, and even Caroline Polachek herself made a video doing her own TikTok trend.

 279.
And if you’ve ever wondered, how did she ever get so good at interpretative dance choreography? You’re in luck, as the next video explains it.

 280.

 281.
2) Amanaemonesia by Chairlift

 282.

 283.
“Amanaemonesia” is a single from Chairlift’s 2012 album “Something” and it was released with a music video of a young Caroline doing an interpretative dance in a lime green suit. As you can see, she’s been doing this for at least ten years! If TikTok was alive back then, we could’ve gotten an #amonaemonesia trend and Chairlift might not have disbanded. As much as we love Chairlift though, we do like solo act Caroline better. To those curious, amanaemonesia is a made-up word much like the dance that Caroline made up on the fly for the music video. According to Caroline, “‘Amanaemonesia’ is about irresponsibility and guilt, combined with confusion and anarchy and being very small in a sea of a big population. Splintering ourselves into multiple personalities within the song, that’s a good perspective to approach the song from.” Check out the tushy wiggle here to fully appreciate Caroline’s unique choreography.

 284.

 285.
3) New Shapes by Charli XCX (feat. Christina and the Queens and Caroline Polachek)

 286.

 287.
This is more of a Charli XCX song, but it has so much Caroline Polachek influence that it deserves to be on this list. Charli XCX collaborates with Caroline Polachek and French singer Christine and the Queens who’s done a collaboration with Caroline as well (La vita nuova – another video that’s worth a watch). We love the old school feel of everything and there’s so much star power in this song as the three artists give an all out performance.

 288.

 289.
4) Izzit True What They Tell Me by Ramona Lisa

 290.

 291.
This will be the last Caroline Polachek dance video in this list, promise! We just can’t get enough.

 292.
Ramona Lisa was Caroline’s moniker for her 2014 debut solo album “Arcadia”. The album came about during her artistic residency at Rome’s Villa Medici complex. To promote the album, she shot a series of 10 videos dancing to all of her songs in the album, accompanied by two identically-dressed backup dancers. Less pop and more experimental – Ramona Lisa didn’t stray from the synth-pop sound she was known for with Chairlift, but it brought another flavor of Caroline Polachek that a lot of her fans love.

 293.

 294.
5) Walk Like an Egyptian – Girl Crisis

 295.

 296.
Who loves The Bangles? We do! Who wouldn’t forget the ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ dance in the 80’s? Maybe none of you … or I guess some of you? Who reads this blog anyways? Might as well comment here or here and let us know!
297. In this grainy Super8 video, Girl Crisis – Caroline’s choir band, does a pretty good cover. Girl Crisis was formed in 2008 by Caroline and twelve other female singers including members of Au Revoir Simone and Class Actress. They only release songs on YouTube and swear they’ll never play them live. This cover is their latest among other similar stripped down covers of famous songs that include Taylor Dayne’s Tell It To My Heart, Nirvana’s Come as You Are and Chris Isaac’s Wicked Game.

 298.

 299.
6) Everything Is Spoilt By Use by Ice Choir

 300.

 301.
“Everything Is Spoilt By Use” will give you heavy 80s New Wave vibes. Listening to this song actually made us miss Scritti Politti and OMD – their songs Oh Patti and Souvenir in particular (we’re actually vibing to these songs right now while writing the article). Caroline Polachek features in this song by Ice Choir which is the solo project Kurt Feldman (The Pains of Being Pure at Heart). Not only did she collaborate with Kurt Feldman for this, but she also directs the music video.

 302.

 303.
7) I Belong In Your Arms (Japanese Version) by Chairlift

 304.

 305.
A Caroline Polachek song list wouldn’t be complete if Chairlift’s “I Belong In Your Arms” wasn’t included. This 2012 hit was originally released in English for their sophomore album “Something”. To commemorate the release of the album in Japan, Chairlift also created a limited 7-inch with the Japanese version of the song. Considering that some of Caroline’s influences included traditional Japanese songs and anime themes when she lived in Japan as a child, it’s no wonder the song sounds so good in Japanese too. We actually prefer this version better. Accompanying this song is a karaoke-inspired music video, complete with sing-along lyrics and very bad green screen footage in the background as the band performs. Fittingly, the B-side of the limited 7-inch is a midi karaoke version of the song by Ice Choir’s Kurt Feldman.

Nowadays, every site has their own top tens.

 340.
Since we’re at it again, what better way to get back into the game than to make a list about the latest player on social media – TikTok. If you’re like me and tried to drown out your anxiety of current world events with endless, mindless videos – you’ve delved into the time-consuming, energy-depleting blackhole that is TikTok. I admit, I have a love-hate relationship with this app. I love how there’s content for anyone and everyone, but it’s much too terrible for my productivity. After an almost three-hour marathon of TikTok viewing (where I quickly swiped away those ‘Hold up!’ videos reminding me that I’ve been on the app for too long) I did discover a silver-lining. TikTok has somehow, breathed new life to old songs – songs from the past that never did the get the recognition they deserved. With this, I present you my top 10 favourite songs that found a second life as viral TikTok video soundbytes:

 341.

 342.
1) Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros / Edith Whiskers

 343.

 344.
Before being a viral hit on TikTok, the 2010 song “Home” represented the peak of hipster-chic. This was the song that you’d imagine to be in a soundtrack of an indie rom-com. It had all the elements for an indie movie meet-cute: the typical jangly guitars, essential trumpets, a random accordion, and most importantly – whistles and claps. The original Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros song also beckoned late 50’s – early 60’s nostalgia by adding a conversation mid-song in the spirit of Mickey and Sylvia’s Love is Strange. After disappearing from the airwaves after the hipster-hype died down, it gained a new following 10 years later as a soundtrack for sentimental, wistful, and occasionally #cottagecore videos from TikTok. Not only did the original find a second wind, the 2015 cover by Edith Whiskers (aka UK musician Tom Rosenthal) which is a tender and more stripped down version, became the more popular version of the song in 2020 – allowing it to reach its viral status.

 345.
Fun fact: Did you know that before Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros officially released the single “Home”, it appeared in Community’s “Debate 109” episode?

 346.

 347.
2) Send Me On My Way by Rusted Root

 348.

 349.
90’s kids would remember this as a soundtrack to their childhood – perhaps, since it was also a soundtrack to the late 90’s and early 2000 kids movies Matilda and Ice Age. The song, released in 1995 by worldbeat band Rusted Root, was not a commercial success at that time, but has endeared itself to many a hearts of Gen Z kids as it seems to have gained new popularity on TikTok. You can typically hear this on any wholesome TikTok video – may it be in the background of someone pouring resin into a mould, making the perfect scrambled eggs, or just a happy tune to accompany cute pet antics. A remix of this song made by Vibe Street, has also been making the rounds on TikTok as well.

 350.

 351.
3) Hayloft by Mother Mother

 352.

 353.
No other song has gotten a better rebirth from TikTok than Vancouver band Mother Mother’s 2008 single “Hayloft”. This is one of three songs that have gone viral in the 2020’s for the band, whose album “O My Heart” has become popular again after 14 years of being released. Among their songs, “Hayloft” in particular is part of a TikTok trend being used in combination with the “ice in your veins” pose popularized by NBA Los Angeles Lakers player D’Angelo Russell. Dubbed as the “It Started with a Hey” challenge, TikTok users would make a video using the soundbyte consisting of the “it started with the hay..” part of “Hayloft” while comparing two types of people with completely opposite personalities – the latter making the “ice in your veins” pose to express that they’re telling their ‘truth’. As a person who belongs to the GenX set, this is all greek to me, but I am enjoying the fact that young teeny-boppers are getting exposed to a wider variety of songs even if it is via these weirdly confusing trends.

 354.
In response to the song’s resurgence, the band released a new video, a short film of sorts, depicting the events of “Hayloft” (seen above). This was actually very smart of them to do since the old video kind of screams late 2000’s with the Franz Ferdinand/White Stripes-like video effects – not at all very appealing to the young Gen Z demographic. They’ve also released a song sequel to Hayloft aptly called Hayloft II.

 355.

 356.
4) That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings

 357.

 358.
Remember when The Ting Tings were on that Apple commercial? The one with dancing silhouettes? I do, because I’m old.

 359.
If you’re not as old as me, you’ve probably heard them on TikTok.

 360.
Recently, they’ve become relevant again with TikTok’s “That’s Not My Name” trend. The new challenge, where people are asked to make a video sharing the nicknames they’ve been called as in the past, has captured a slew of celebrities’ attention: everyone from Alicia Silverstone to Will Smith seems to have done one.

 361.

 362.
5) Leni by Crystal Castles vs GoodBooks
363.

 364.

 365.
Not attached to any particular trend, Crystal Castles songs are slowly gaining traction again on TikTok. One song in particular is their 2008 remix of the GoodBooks song Leni. I love me some GoodBooks and I also love me some Crystal Castles, so I was pretty psyched when I heard this while browsing random videos. Interesting to note, the version that’s doing its rounds on TikTok right now is a sped up version of the song. Since it is gaining in popularity I’ll let you guys listen in to the original remix above and fully take in the pleasure of how we enjoyed this track back in the day.

 366.

 367.
6) Tongue Tied by Grouplove
368.

 369.

 370.
Did you know that Tongue Tied had a “Glee” version? This might probably be where most people have heard of this song and the band that made it a hit: Grouplove. Apart from their 2011 breakout hit, Grouplove was also known as the band that sang that song from BoJack Horseman. But if you’re in the much much younger age set, you’ve definitely heard of them through TikTok. The song “Tongue Tied” was remixed by burned.toast420 and became this passing TikTok challenge where you use the audio with the last video on your camera roll and post it with the caption that says: “Apparently this sound matches perfectly with your last video”. I don’t get this trend, but if it’s actually making one of my favourite songs more popular, I’m not complaining.

 371.

 372.
7) Little Dark Age by MGMT
373.

 374.

 375.
Unlike the Goodbooks/Crystal Castles song that was sped up to become popular in TikTok, this 2017 song by MGMT was slowed down when it was used as a TikTok trend. The slowed down version of the song was included in the 2020 Angel/Devil challenge, where TikTok users tried to make devil horns and angel halos with their hands using TikTok’s “time warp scan” effect. Results ranged from impressive to oftentimes hilarious. Either way, it successfully introduced a new generation of kids to the genius that is MGMT.

 376.

 377.
8) Spirits by The Strumbellas
378.

 379.

 380.
“Spirits” is a folk rock song that was released in 2016 by Canadian band The Strumbellas. It gained viral popularity only recently when an edit of the song accompanied TikTok’s #thenvsnow challenge. In the challenge, TikTok users share a video of themselves in the past and cut to how they look like in the present while an edited version of “Spirits” play. The edit is a mashup between the beginning of the song which starts out as a simple guitar over vocals, and the middle of the song – an all out chorus with the whole band singing. The contrast of sound produces that “now and then” effect and works well to build up the dramatic transformation. Because of the popularity, The Strumbellas posted a new a lyric video on YouTube, a whole five years after the song’s initial release.

 381.

 382.
9) Electric Love by Børns
383.

 384.

 385.
Børns “Electric Love” may have been released in 2014, but much like the other songs in this list, it only received much needed attention when it became part of a TikTok trend. The trend in question? The Kissing My Best Friend challenge. Based on how this challenge was named, you could imagine how many awkward situations this resulted in, as well as (possibly) many friendships destroyed.

 386.

 387.
10) Nobody by Mitski
388.

 389.

 390.
By far, my most favourite song in this list and probably the best song to ever get popular during this pandemic, “Nobody” is a song created by Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski for her 2018 album “Be The Cowboy”. The song came about during a break from her Asia and Australia tour when she spent winter holidays in Malaysia – away from family and friends. The isolation, the stress, and the fact that she was in a different timezone from everyone she knew during one of the happiest times of the year, eventually got to her, and “Nobody” was born.

 391.
The song became TikTok viral in mid-2021 with TikTok content creators using the soundbyte of Mitski singing the word ‘nobody’ over and over with increasing intensity, as they pretended to (literally) run away from their problems. The song reached its viral height when Jimmy Fallon also got in with the trend and posted his own “Nobody” TikTok video.

 392.

 393.
There are dozens more that didn’t make the cut, but I’m sure there’ll be dozens more after this list gets published. By then, maybe I’ll do a part two.

 394.
In the meantime, if you’re on TikTok, try to pry yourself off while you still can.

 426.
The past week, I decided I would finally watch Euphoria and binge-watched the first season. My FOMO (fear of missing out) was acting up since I’ve been seeing all the hype for it. I came with very little expectation, after all, I’ve had my fill of watching a ton of teen dramas in the past that I didn’t think I would see anything that I haven’t seen before.

 427.
Post-binge, I’m happy to report that the series did not disappoint.

 428.
One thing that kept niggling in my mind however, was that this would have been Skins if they actually were successful in adapting it to the US audience.

 429.
Skins was a UK show that ran from 2007 to 2013, and much like Euphoria, it dealt with the dark and complicated lives of teenagers. It was a huge hit in the UK so they tried to adapt it to the US via MTV, hoping to imitate the success of Shameless and The Office. The US version of Skins only lasted one season. At that time, I thought, if they actually produced it through HBO just like Shameless, and not MTV (which limited how edgy it could be) it would have been a success. Interesting to note – Euphoria is an HBO production.

 430.
Euphoria as I’ve learned, was also an import. It’s loosely based on an Israeli teen drama of the same name. Curious to how loosely it was based, I watched a couple of episodes of the original series. It was indeed, loosely adapted. In fact, the further I watched, I was slowly finding out how Euphoria had more things in common with Skins than it had with the original show. Both Euphoria and Skins follow the format of character centred episodes, they feature problematic parents, there’s constant drug use, house parties, a sociopathic lead character, a manic pixie dream girl, and a drug dealing character (only, instead of a lovable one like Fezco, what Skins had was the Mad Twatter with a hipster moustache). On a side note, I’m actually glad we’re over the hipster moustache stage, I’ve seen a couple of waxed handlebar moustaches in my day and the pretentiousness always made me want to barf.

 431.
This wont be a Euphoria vs. Skins comparison article though. Despite the similarities, Euphoria is still its own show. The thing is, watching Euphoria made me miss Skins. Not that I’m still hung up on what actually happened to Freddie or why Sid was never mentioned in that Cassie-centric Skins Fire episode. What I miss about Skins the most, is the music. Skins was always big on music. Skins’ characters were fascinating, the storylines groundbreaking; but the music was the one that made the show a hundred times better. It gave the show a certain kind of edge. The show’s soundtrack featured music that undoubtedly shaped a generation. The Gossip, Foals, MGMT and Crystal Castles were among the few artists that got a big boost, with some, even finding more success after the show ended. (Maybe that’s why MTV wanted to produce Skins in the first place….to bring music back Music to Music Television?) So I’ve decided, to kick off a weekly nostalgic look into the music that defined a particular generation. For the next couple of weeks, we’ll be doing a recap of the most memorable songs that appeared in Skins’ seven season run.

 432.
It’s 2007 again, what are we listening to?

 433.
Standing in the Way of Control (Soulwax Nite Version) – The Gossip
434. If there ever was a song that embodied Skins, this was it. It began with the Skins promotional trailer: a wild house party to end all parties, with footage of teens in different states of intoxication and undress – getting high, horny, or puking their brains out. The soundtrack? “Standing in the Way of Control” by The Gossip. “Standing in the Way of Control” was already a small hit when Skins picked it up, but it wasn’t the original version of the song that transformed it into an epic era defining teen anthem, it was the Soulwax Nite Version – a remix ripe for a raucous “get-together”. The song became synonymous to “skins parties” – i.e. any house party that, much like it’s namesake, indulged in teenage hedonism. With that, much like Spandau Ballet’s “True” in the eighties or Oasis’ “Wonderwall” in the nineties, “Standing in the Way of Control” cemented itself as a song that bookmarked the wild “skins party” days of the late noughties,

 435.

 436.

 437.
Right Place, Wrong Time – Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
438. An excellent cover of the Dr. John song, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s version ups the ante on this already energetic, funky song. We hear this play in the second episode of the series, the morning after Michelle’s party. Our favourite Skins characters scamper off, having been woken up by Michelle’s mom, who just returned home to a thoroughly trashed house. This is too good of a song not to notice, and works extremely well while Anwar, Maxxie, and friends dash off to safety.

 439.
“Right Place, Wrong Time” has also been a favourite background tune to a lot of chase sequences on TV and movies. This version in particular, was included in 1997’s Scream 2 movie soundtrack.

 440.
Interesting tidbit: another Jon Spencer Blues Explosion song, “Bellbottoms” has been featured in a soundtrack, coincidentally, used in a car chase scene. If you check out the first 6 minutes of Edgar Wright’s 2017 action movie “Baby Driver”, you’ll hear it.

 441.

 442.

 443.
Aht Uh Mi Hed – Shuggie Otis
444. This 1974 classic from Shuggie Otis is a delight to hear, especially in one very memorable scene from Cassie’s episode. In the episode, Cassie is on the second floor, and notices Sid walk in to school. She quietly observes him from above. She’s smitten by him, having just had a conversation earlier about her eating habits and how it concerns him. He cares about her, he says. Like anyone who’s ever wondered if the one they love, loves them back, she asks the universe for a sign: “Look up if you like me, look up if you like me…“. He doesn’t look up.

 445.

 448. Underwear is one of two Magnetic Fields songs that appear in the series. The Magnetic Fields’ songs are the perfect soundtrack for Sid as they fittingly embody his goofy and awkward nature. They also sum his up cluelessness when it comes to love. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the only times we hear The Magnetic Fields is if Sid in the scene. So where do we hear “Underwear”? It’s in that bedroom scene where Sid tries to relieve his schoolwork stress with a picture of Michelle in hand.

 449.

 450.

 451.
Hell Is Around The Corner – Tricky
452. Tricky’s “Hell is Around the Corner” sets the mood as it plays while Cassie, not able to cope with heartache, attempts suicide. The scene is beautifully staged: a sunny day at the park with Cassie, looking angelic in a gorgeous white dress. She fills up a water gun with vodka, and uses it to down a couple of pills. She gets lost in the moment and dances on top of the park bench as the music swells.

 453.
Skins goes back to 90’s with this song and aptly chooses Bristol artist Tricky with his unique brand of moody and dark trip hop. If you think it sounds just like that song by Portishead, it’s because both “Glory Box” and “Hell Is Around The Corner” sample the 1971 Issac Hayes song “Ike’s Rap II”.

 454.

 455.

 456.
The One You Really Love – The Magnetic Fields
457. The Magnetic Fields show up again in the seventh episode of this season.

 458.
As if suddenly hit by cupid’s arrow, Sid realizes who he really loves. This is heavily implied as he browses through online pictures of Cassie and this song is playing in the background.

 459.
As much as “The One You Really Love” sounds like a really sweet love song at the beginning, the song slowly reveals itself as a melancholy reminder of a love that’s lost to another. And if you listen closely until the end, it’s a love that’s lost to someone that’s long been gone. The song clocks in shy of 3 minutes, but with lyrics like “I do believe our love’s in danger/ I might as well be loving air / You look at me like I’m a stranger / You look at me like I’m not there” there’s a lot of emotion to unpack.

 460.

 461.

 462.
You Can’t Hurry Love – The Concretes
463. In the early 2000’s The Concretes had two big hits: “Say Something New” which was featured highly in an ad for Target, and “You Can’t Hurry Love” – the song that everyone remembers as Sid’s “off to profess my love” song in Skins. In the ninth episode of series, Sid finally realizes that he needs to do something to get his girl. In typical Sid fashion, he absentmindedly throws on mismatched clothes with mismatched shoes and waste no time to get Cassie. As he’s doing his mad dash, he’s played off to the triumphant trumpets of The Concretes “You Can’t Hurry Love”. This scene and this song, come right after Sid composes a heartfelt and very honest love letter that’s too pure not to post here:

 464.

 465.

Cassie, I’m shit with words, everything always comes out as crap, but I’ve been doing some thinking and everything is getting clearer. The thing is Cass, I’ve woken up this morning and the sun’s shining through the window and it’s making me think of you. Cassie, it’s not right you’re hiding away in that clinic, you’ve got to get out in the world! I don’t care if you think you’re odd, because I feel like singing when I see you. And you’re beautiful. And I’ve been such a fucking chapstick these past few weeks. All I want to do this morning is sit on top of Brandon Hill and hold you, and tell you how wonderful you are and stick my hand down your knickers …and…and… I love you. – Sid

 466.
Style-wise it could be improved, but it had several compelling thematic points.

 467.

 468.

 469.
Sky Holds The Sun – The Bees
470. The Sky Holds The Sun only has three unique lines in its lyrics, but it’s a real earworm. Skins features this song while an immensely lovesick Chris pines for Angie – his school teacher. Theirs is a highly problematic relationship that wouldn’t fly in today’s TV. But back in the late 90’s and even just a few years ago, young male students having affairs with their hot female teachers weren’t at all that uncommon – i.e. Pacey with Ms. Jacobs (Dawson’s Creek), Dan with Ms. Carr (Gossip Girl) or Archie with Ms. Grundy (Riverdale).

 471.
Although the controversial relationship was brought in for additional drama, there were also some comedic Angie/Chris moments which managed to lighten the already dubious situation. In one scene, Chris has a spirited discussion with Merve – Angie’s fiance, arguing that he and Angie are meant to be together. The ever practical Merve shuts him down and even reveals Angie gave him genital herpes in the past. He offers some solid advice –

 472.

Chris: But, she can see into my soul…
473. Merve: How old are you?
474. Chris: Seventeen.
475. Merve: Seventeen? You haven’t even got a soul yet, and with any luck you haven’t got any herpes either. Quit while you’re ahead.

 476.
Looking back, Merve made a lot of sense. Shame on you Angie, and thank god this TV trope is (hopefully!) dying down.

 477.
Nevertheless, The Bees’ “Sky Holds the Sun” is a silver lining in this. It’s one heck of a love song.

 478.

 479.

 480.
The Owls Go – Architecture in Helsinki
481. Architecture in Helsinki is indie pop at its best. We only get a glimpse of this song in the season finale, as Cassie hatches a plan to escape from the treatment facility that she’s in. The song is played briefly, but it’s enough to make you go: what’s that song playing in the background? The song’s unique and playful melody is one that matches Cassie’s character to a T. One of my personal favourites, it’s a twee pop song that I would recommend to anyone, any day, if they’re looking for something new to listen to. But who hasn’t heard of Architecture in Helsinki?

 482.
Regardless if you know this song or not, press that play button and enjoy, you’ll thank me for it.

 483.

 484.

 485.
It’s All Over – Broken Family Band
486. Probably one of the most downloaded songs after the Skins finale aired, next to Sid’s version of “Wild World” , “It’s All Over” encapsulates the pain of a broken heart in beautiful song form. As Cassie drops off her letter to Sid, breaking things off, we hear the Broken Family Band express our mutual heartbreak as we watch the scene.

 487.

 488.

 489.
For Lovers – Wolfman featuring Pete Doherty
490. I will always love this song. In my opinion, it was the perfect song of choice for Cassie and Sid at the diner. They share their first real kiss. Young love at its sweetest!

 491.
A while back, when I noticed that they had it on Netflix Canada, I decided to do a re-watch of my favourite episodes. To my horror, this song was NOT playing in this very essential scene. It just didn’t feel the same. No magic. Nothing. I’m not sure if it was the disappointment of expecting that particular song to play and it wasn’t playing, if I just overly romanticized that moment, or if the song was the one that truly carried that scene to perfection. So I tried to find the original version that aired and viewed it.

 492.
Did the song make that scene? Yes, yes it did.

 493.

 494.

 495.
Unfortunately, due to licensing issues, most of the songs in this list actually didn’t make the cut to be included in the international streaming or DVD release of Skins. It’s such as shame though, because for most Skins episodes, music was used quite prominently to enhance the viewing experience. Anyone viewing it without the original soundtrack would probably question why this show was such a hit back in the day. Here I am though, doing the lord’s work and letting you know…you’re all missing out! Look at all these awesome songs! If you do want the full Skins experience I suggest getting a VPN to stream it from the Channel 4 UK’s site instead, or find a copy with the original soundtrack somewhere….?

 496.
Next week, we’ll look back on Series 2.

 559.

They’ve just wrapped up their Hannukah shows this December 5 – playing Christmas songs nonetheless. So we’re featuring Yo La Tengo for today’s indie Christmas countdown. The track comes from Yo La Tengo’s 2002 album ‘Merry Christmas From Yo La Tengo’. Originally done by Jan Terri, Yo La Tengo gives it their own lo-fi flavor with noisy guitars and the whispy voice of Georgia Hubley taking the lead.
