24.
GEORGE TOWN, April 28 — More than 220 years ago, Armenian traders and merchants landed in Penang, creating a trading link between India, Singapore and Penang.

 25.
 26.
One of the earliest records of the Armenians settling down in Penang is a house title deed dated 1801 with the name “The Armenian House” referring to a house at the junction of Beach Street and Armenian Street.

 27.
 28.
This piece of information can be found in a book titled The Armenians of Penang by Nadia Wright.

 29.
 30.
It is believed the road where the house was located was subsequently named Armenian Lane, as noted in an old map dated 1807.

 31.
 32.
According to Wright, most of the Armenians in Penang came from Persia as early as 1800 with others from India, right after the British “acquired” Penang.

 33.
 34.
Though the Armenians were a minority at the time, with less than 180 in number over a 150-year period, they played a significant role in Penang’s economic and civil life.

 35.
 36.
Among the well-known Armenian personalities at that time was the doyen of the Armenian community, Catchatoor Galastaun, who funded the Armenian Church; the Sarkies brothers who established the E&O Hotel, the Anthony family who were the founders of stockbroking firm, A.A. Anthony & Co; Dr Thaddeus Avetoom of the Georgetown Dispensary; the Ipekdjians who were jewellers and the Gregorys.

 47.
 48.
The Armenian community in Penang dwindled eventually as they left for Singapore and other countries.

 49.
 50.
E&O Hotel and A.A. Anthony & Co remained as reminders of their presence here, along with the few graves of Armenian personalities in Western Road Cemetery and the Northam Road Old Protestant Cemetery.

 51.
 52.
The remains of 20 Armenian merchants, including six from the Anthony family, were buried in a combined plot at the Western Road Cemetery but due to years of neglect, the grave site is overgrown with vegetation and the headstones covered in mould.

 53.
 54.
Wright, in her book, noted the deplorable conditions of the grave site and appealed for an Armenian benefactor to restore and maintain the site as a reminder of the Armenians link to Penang.

 65.
 66.
This caught the attention of Mrs Kohar Khatchadourian and the Kohar Ensemble which then led to a five-year effort to restore the grave site starting from 2019.

 67.
 68.
The Kohar Ensemble, a symphony and orchestra in Armenia, contacted Penang-based historian Marcus Langdon and he became the co-ordinator for the restoration efforts.

 69.
 70.
The headstones at the communal plot were cleaned and some of the names were painted at the start of the restoration efforts in 2019 but everything came to a halt during the Covid-19 pandemic.

 82.
Finally, early this month, the Kohar Ensemble sent an employee, Serena Vartabedian, to Penang to supervise restoration efforts for the grave site that has 12 headstones.

 83.
 84.
Vartabedian said the grave site was in bad condition again after more than four years since they started restoration works, with most of the wordings on the headstones faded away.

 85.
 86.
“I have to be here to trace out the carved words to make out the names that were written in Armenian,” she said.

 87.
 88.
It took about two weeks to clean up the grave site and headstones and repaint the names.

 99.
 100.
Arshak Sarkies’ grave, which is nearby, was also cleaned and a new gravestone made.

 101.
 102.
Arshak Sarkies was one of the Sarkies brothers who established E&O Hotel. The youngest of the four Sarkies brothers, he managed the E&O Hotel for almost four decades before he died in 1931.

 103.
 104.
As for the combined gravesite, though the remains of 20 Armenians were interred there, only 12 headstones survived while there are no traces of the identities of the remaining eight Armenians.

 105.
 106.
The 20 Armenians were initially buried in the church graveyard or the church aisle of the Armenian Apostolic Church of St Gregory the Illuminator on Bishop Street.

 107.
 108.
The church was consecrated in 1824 but a portion of it collapsed in February 1909 before it was eventually demolished in the same year.

 109.
 110.
According to Wright, Joseph Anthony and Arshak Sarkies commissioned Henry Neubronner to design a monument to commemorate the church.

 121.
 122.
The monument was built at the corner of Bishop and King Streets but as the Armenian community dwindled, the monument fell into disrepair and it was demolished in the 1930s.

 123.
 124.
The remains of the 20 Armenians along with the 12 surviving headstones were then reinterred in the Western Road Cemetery in August 1937.

 125.
 126.
Vartabedian said the Armenians reinterred in the combined plot were mostly from well-known Armenian families.

 127.
 128.
Most notably, three generations of the Anthony family are buried there. This includes the patriarch Arratoon Anthony, his wife Vartkhatoon Anthony, son Anthony Arratoon Anthony and grandchildren, Sophia, Hyrapiet and Alexander.

 129.
 130.
Arratoon and Vartkhatoon Anthony arrived in Penang with their three sons, Anthony, Satoor and Johannes in 1819.

 142.
They lived in Clove Hall. Incidentally, Arratoon Road, which is next to Clove Hall Road, was named after Arratoon Anthony.

 143.
 144.
Anthony, Satoor and Johannes set up businesses of their own in Penang between the 1860s and 1870s but Anthony outshone his brothers when he set up A.A. Anthony & Co in 1840 as an importer and exporter.

 145.
 146.
A.A. Anthony & Co remains in existence till today as a stockbroking firm although it is no longer owned by the Anthony family.

 147.
 148.
A.A. Anthony died in 1873 and was buried in one of the aisles of St Gregory’s Church before his remains, along with his three children and parents, were reinterred in Western Road Cemetery.

 149.
 150.
The wife of Catchatoor Galastaun, Varterny (spelled as Vardiny on the headstone), was also among the 20 Armenians buried in the combined plot.

 151.
 152.
Catchatoor Galastaun was a prominent Armenian businessman who funded the construction of St Gregory’s Church and married Varterny Carapiet in the church right after it was consecrated in 1824.

 153.
 154.
The remaining Armenians in the combined plot are Markar Carapiet; Joseph Gregory Lucas; Tateos Haroutyounian; Kavork Arratoon; Mackertich Kohanness Carapiet; Catherine, the wife of Stuart Herriot, and Hyrapiet Ter Garbirel.

 155.
 156.
Khatchadourian and the Kohar Ensemble sponsored the full restoration and cleaning of the combined grave site and Arshak Sarkies’ grave.

 157.
 158.
Vartabedian said Khatchadourian and Kohar Ensemble have also engaged a local contractor to conduct regular maintenance and cleaning of the gravesite twice a year. —

 273.
 274.
KUCHING, April 27 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has proposed for Sarawak to impose a minimum deposit of RM2 million into a local bank, or property purchase for a value of not less than RM1.5 million, for business people wanting to migrate to the state.

 275.
 276.
According to him, Sarawak’s harmony and political stability have become key attractions for ‘many business friends in the peninsula wanting to migrate here’.

 277.
 278.
“If they want to migrate to Sarawak, I say can, so I want to suggest to the Premier (Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg) as well, when we have our own bank later, those wishing to migrate to Sarawak must have minimum deposit of RM2 million in our state-owned bank, or purchase property here for no less than RM1.5 million.

 279.
 280.
“This at least can generate income for our state. They can also get permanent resident status in Sarawak,” he said.

 281.
 282.
Fadillah was speaking to reporters during an Aidilfitri gathering hosted by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Satok branch at Dewan Haji Kamarudin in Kampung Segedup here today.

 283.
 284.
In February, Abang Johari said Sarawak was in talks with Affin Bank Bhd to be a block shareholder to strengthen the state’s economy further. This would make Sarawak an influential shareholder in the bank.

 285.
 286.
In this regard, Fadillah said: “Looking at Sarawak as an example in terms of politics, position, economy, in fact in terms of social well-being, the communities here are able to live in harmony.

 287.
 288.
“As such, some (of those in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah) are envious of Sarawak,” said Fadillah.

 333.
 334.
KUALA PERLIS, April 27 — PKR Information chief Fahmi Fadzil today raised questions about the presence of top PAS leaders in Perlis rather than in Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor.

 335.
 336.
Fahmi said the matter was quite ‘interesting’, but he was not sure what PAS leaders were trying to convey by not being in Kuala Kubu Baru, especially on Nomination Day for the by-election.

 337.
 338.
“I see that the top PAS leadership, all of them are here in Perlis at this time. I’m not sure what it means when they are not together (with the Perikatan Nasional candidate) in Kuala Kubu Baru, but anyway, I had also been there (Kuala Kubu Baru) myself recently,” he told reporters here today.

 339.
 340.
Earlier, Fahmi, who is on a three-day working visit to the state, attended the Jiwa Madani Programme in Kampung Seberang Ramai, here.

 341.
 342.
It is understood that PAS is organising the party’s central-level Hari Raya Open House event at Dewan 2020, Kangar near here, today, from 11am to 2pm.

 343.
 344.
Among the main PAS leaders who attended the programme were the party’s Mursyidul Am Datuk Hashim Jasin, President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Secretary-General Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.

 345.
 346.
Meanwhile, Fahmi, who is also the Minister of Communications, said the candidate representing the Unity Government, Pang Sock Tao, had a bright chance of winning the by-election.

 347.
 348.
The by-election sees DAP’s Pang in a four-cornered contest against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) candidate from Bersatu, Khairul Azhari Saut; Hafizah Zainuddin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent).

 373.
RIYADH, April 27 — Malaysia will voice its firm stance on Israeli violence in Gaza and geopolitical tensions in West Asia at the two-day World Economic Forum (WEF) special meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, beginning tomorrow, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

 374.
 375.
Mohamad expressed hope that countries with previously differing views would now join Malaysia in condemning Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinian people.

 376.
 377.
“Malaysia has consistently supported the Palestinian people’s struggle and we want to see them given equal rights, establish an independent country and to be accepted as a full member of the United Nations,” he told reporters during his visit to the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh today.

 378.
 379.
Mohamad also said that he would address the tensions in West Asia during his meetings with counterparts at the WEF, aiming to prevent them from escalating into a regional crisis.

 380.
 381.
“I hope that those with interests in the region will collaborate to ease and resolve these tensions, preventing them from escalating into a crisis in West Asia,” he said.

 382.
 383.
On the personal invitation from Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to deliver a speech at the meeting alongside other world leaders, Mohamad described it as a recognition from the Saudi government to Malaysia.

 384.
 385.
In addition, he said that he and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, would also participate in various sessions and hold meetings with industry leaders during the special meeting.

 386.
 387.
“I am confident this will provide us with a platform to offer investors and multinational companies, who have yet to invest in Malaysia, a closer insight into Malaysia’s unique position in Southeast Asia,” he said.

 388.
 389.
Mohamad said that these efforts were timely as Malaysia positioned itself as a “middle state” and was perceived as a country with a strategic position in South-east Asia, bridging towards East Asia and other regions.

 390.
 391.
“Many countries are implementing de-risking and decoupling policies, learning from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Consequently, they no longer wish to overly depend on a single country,” he added.

 410.
PUTRAJAYA, April 27 — Umno will continue to support all initiatives to retain the unity government in the 16th general election (GE16) for the sake of political stability, economic development and national prosperity, its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

 411.
 412.
Even through there are 18 component parties under the unity government auspices, they all have the same objectives and need to continue to foster harmony to defend the political stability in the country, he added.

 413.
 414.
“GE16 is an election to translate how political stability, the unity of hearts and minds among these 18 parties can be defended.

 415.
 416.
“In my opinion, the present 152 MPs that represent more than two-thirds majority needs to be defended and the way to do so are many, and there are many approaches as well,” he told reporters at the Santunan Kasih Syawal event here today.

 417.
 418.
He was asked to comment about PKR’s intention of retaining Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister for the upcoming term.

 419.
 420.
Ahmad Zahid noted that to develop the country, a vibrant economy was needed to provide job opportunities to the people, and that the salaries for such jobs should not be of minimum wage but set at a premium.

 421.
 422.
He also pointed out that the long-awaited salary adjustment for the civil service that will be announced soon would boost productivity and spur the economy, and expressed hope that the private sector would be inspired to follow the government’s lead by implementing similar adjustments.

 423.
 424.
“New job opportunities in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes will be created thanks to foreign investors in our country. So the source of this economic development is political stability and it needs to be defended,” he stressed.

 425.
 426.
Ahmad Zahid also downplayed any possibility that support from Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters for the unity government candidate in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election, Pang Sock Teo of DAP, would be negatively affected after unscrupulous parties used old videos of her disparaging BN, pointing out that it was an old issue.

 427.
 428.
“There are a lot of old videos, of such videos, of other parties as well, and there is a video of an Islamic party leader urging voters to support DAP, that can be rehashed as well.

 429.
 430.
“But the political reality is that things have changed. The political scenario has also changed and in my view, we should close the old chapter, and start a new journey instead,” he said during the event, in the presence of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

 451.
PUTRAJAYA, April 27 — The tradition and culture of open houses during Hari Raya Aidilfitri must be preserved because it fosters unity among the various ethnic groups in the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

 453.
He said that, in his view, the culture of open houses during festive seasons is unique to Malaysia.

 454.
 455.
“My friends from Indonesia came and told me that they only celebrate Aidilfitri for a day, while we celebrate for 30 days throughout (the month of) Syawal.

 456.
 457.
“What is important is not how long the celebration lasts, but how social assimilation among the various ethnic groups, with different religions and cultural backgrounds, can happen at an event with a unique sense of camaraderie,” he said when met at the Santunan Kasih Syawal with the Deputy Prime Minister event at his official residence, Sri Satria, here today.

 458.
 459.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said that open house events also serve as a platform for leaders to connect with the people.

Previously, each school was allowed to organised two visits a year, however, now each student is allowed (on these programmes) twice a year,” she told reporters after attending the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) heritage programme at Bukit Bendera here today.

 491.
 492.
“So, we want many of our children to follow learning outside the classroom so that their perspective, experience, and skills can be (created) outside the classroom.”

 493.
 494.
Fadhlina, who is also the Malaysian National Commission for Unesco president, said the MoE is now in the process of reintroducing World Heritage Sites under Unesco among school students.

 495.
 496.
Currently, she said, the MoE has visit programmes to the Unesco World Heritage Site in Banda Hilir, Melaka followed by Penang today, and then on to Sabah and Sarawak.

 497.
 498.
She hopes the visit programmes to the World Heritage Sites will not only increase students’ interest in history, but also in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (STEM) given that biodiversity is one of the topics that school students need to master now.

 499.
 500.
The SPI of the guidelines, which was amended on June 16 last year and came into effect immediately, provides an explanation of the procedure for the implementation of student visit activities.

 501.
 502.
The guidelines apply to preschool education to post-secondary education in addition to private educational institutions registered with the MoE.

 503.
 504.
The guidelines also explain that planned school student visits must be held for academic or co-curricular programmes; competitions or camps; study tours or other programmes and activities determined by the approver. — Bernama

 521.
POKOK SENA, April 27 — The government always takes proactive steps to curb the spread of deviant teachings or beliefs that are contrary to the Islamic faith in this country, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Zulkifli Hasan.

 522.
 523.
He said all relevant parties, including agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department, the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, are cooperating to address these issues.

 524.
 525.
“The aspect of providing enlightenment and understanding to the public is handled by many agencies, including those under the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

 526.
 527.
“What is most important now within the current framework is that we complement the enforcement authorities while other agencies under the ministry provide understanding to the public,” he said.

 528.
 529.
He said this when met after attending the Mahabbah Aidilfitri event at the Maahad Tarbiyah Islamiah Derang, here today.

 530.
 531.
Zulkifli was asked to comment on the issue of certain missionaries allegedly spreading deviant beliefs on social media, especially TikTok.

 532.
 533.
In response, Zulkifli said his department takes such issues seriously and constantly monitors them, noting that his department has not received any complaints regarding this matter so far.

 534.
 535.
However, he emphasised the importance of strengthening preaching programmes through cooperation between state and federal governments.

 536.
 537.
“My visits to states like Sarawak, Sabah, Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis is to assess the cooperation between the federal government, the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) and the states for holistic missionary efforts.

 538.
 539.
“We hope that after this, the cooperative relationship between the states and the federal government can further strengthen the country’s missionary agenda. Preachers can also explore new forms of missionary work to make it more engaging and enlightening for the public,” he said.

 540.
 541.
Meanwhile, Zulkifli added that Tabung Haji’s preparations to manage pilgrims for this year’s Haj season are proceeding smoothly, with the agency always ready to adapt to any changes due to its comprehensive support system. — Bernama

 755.
KUCHING, April 27 — Voters in the by-election for the Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) state constituency should choose a candidate who can contribute to the stability and development of the area and Malaysia in general, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

 789.
 790.
KLUANG, April 27 — The Johor state government will ensure that the lack of water supply in the state, especially during festive periods such as Aidilfitri, do not recur by formulating several solutions.

 791.
 792.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said that even though the water supply issue that occurred during Hari Raya Aidilfitri was not serious but it still had a negative effect on those affected, adding that the state government would ensure that there were ‘zero’ water supply issues for Hari Raya next year.

 793.
 794.
“I heard that in badly affected areas, including in Kluang district, they faced nearly two weeks of water issues, and each time I heard of it, I was concerned and worried... if possible (I want) these problems settled immediately.

 795.
 796.
“To overcome this... I not only discussed with the state executive council members but also with experienced individuals such as Datuk Seri Hasni Mohamad (Simpang Renggam MP) and others,” he said during his speech at the Simpang Renggam Umno division Aidilfitri Open House at the Simpang Renggam district council commerce centre near here today.

 797.
 798.
Besides the water supply problem, he said his administration would try to overcome flooding that occurred during the monsoon season, and that several measures, including flood mitigation projects at several dams in the state, had been taken and implemented in stages.

 799.
 800.
“We don’t want floods to happen every rainy or monsoon season and force those affected to evacuate to relief centres.

 801.
 802.
Besides developing Johor by making it unique and less exposed to economic instability, we also need to overcome problems faced by the people,” he added. — Bernama

 858.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — A man was unconscious and injured in the face after being assaulted in Jalan Memanda 9, Jalan Ampang, yesterday.

 859.
 860.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said as a result, a 44-year-old man working as a personal driver was arrested around 10pm yesterday in Jalan Kg Melayu Tambahan, Ampang.

 861.
 862.
He said preliminary investigations found that the cause of the incident was because the victim had allegedly made lewd gestures towards the suspect driving a Toyota Alphard after the vehicle suddenly stopped in front of him at a toll plaza around 1.20pm.

 863.
 864.
“After that, the suspect got out of the car and knocked on the victim’s car window and immediately hit him until he fell unconscious. The suspect also kicked the car door on the right side. The estimated loss is about RM 2,000,” he said in a statement here today.

 865.
 866.
Mohd Azam said the victim received treatment at Hospital Ampang and was diagnosed with ‘hematoma right eye’.

 867.
 868.
He said the suspect was remanded for four days until April 30 and the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing injury and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. — Bernama

 888.
 889.
KOTA KINABALU, April 27 — The cabinet paper regarding efforts to establish the sports industry sector is expected to be presented to the Cabinet within a month, says Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh.

 890.
 891.
She said the cabinet paper aimed at establishing the sector under the Ministry of Youth and Sports was crucial for expanding the scope of the sports industry in the country, and not just focus on training or athletes.

 892.
 893.
According to her, the scope includes sports medicine, supplements, insurance, gym operators and sports facilities, organising sports activities and conferences and various other sports-related activities that have the potential to increase the country’s income.

 894.
 895.
“It is important to look at the industry revolving around sports itself and see how we can work together under this ministry. We establish the sports industry sector and collaborate with the Department of Statistics (DoSM) to collect related data to move forward.

 896.
 897.
“We have been working with DoSM before this but the data is all about the retail value that comes through sports, when there are sports events organised, we look at how much is spent but we want more than that scope, so we hope the sports industry sector achieves our aspirations,” she said.

 898.
 899.
She said this during a press conference after the opening of the 18th Asian Federation of Sports Medicine Congress and the 8th National Sports Institute Sports Medicine and Sports Science Conference, officiated by the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

 900.
 901.
Hannah said that with more comprehensive data involving the sports industry sector, her ministry would be able to better stimulate the growth of sports in the country by bringing in more funds and investments into the industry.

 902.
 903.
“With this move, the Ministry of Youth and Sports will no longer be seen as a small ministry that only looks after youth and sports. There is a whole industry there that we can explore and which can benefit the people,” she said.

 904.
 905.
She added that the establishment of the sports industry sector was also expected to enable the government to allocate more specific funds for the ministry, particularly in the fields of sports medicine and sports science, which were currently mainly allocated to the Ministry of Health. — Bernama

 922.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Genting Malaysia Berhad today rejected a news report claiming it was involved in talks relating to the opening of a second casino in Johor.

 923.
 924.
Genting said its deputy chairman and chief executive, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay — who was named in the news report — has never been involved in such discussions for a casino opening in Forest City, Johor.

 925.
 926.
It also called on all parties to cease any dissemination of misinformation and untrue claims, following a recent Bloomberg news report, which claimed to quote people familiar with the matter as saying that the opening of a casino would revive the US$100 billion (RM478.35 billion) Forest City property project.

 927.
 928.
“Genting Malaysia Berhad wishes to state that neither the company nor Tan Sri Lim was involved in any such discussions or meetings and the claims made are untrue.

 929.
 930.
“Genting will not hesitate to take action deemed necessary to protect its interests and stakeholders,” the statement read.

 931.
 932.
Genting’s denial follows after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, categorically denied that the federal government was weighing the idea of issuing a second casino licence in the country.

 933.
 934.
It was reported that Anwar had met Berjaya Corp Bhd founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Lim last week at the development on the southern coast of Malaysia near Singapore.

 935.
 936.
A spokesman for Berjaya has, however, reportedly said the company is not aware of any conversation between Anwar and Tan on the potential development of any casino in Forest City.

 937.
 938.
Most recently, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi affirmed Johor’s stance on the proposed opening of any casinos in the state, describing the news report as a mere rumour intended for sabotage and to maliciously tarnish the image of Forest City and the state of Johor as a whole.

 939.
 940.
According to the national news agency Bernama, 70 per cent of the property development at Forest City in Iskandar Puteri, Johor has been sold within the past two years and is set to continue to increase over the next three to four years.

 994.
“(During a recent official visit to China), we met with investors and informed them that industrial zones will be created in all districts, and we also highlighted that the state’s infrastructure (is undergoing upgrades) and will improve by early 2027 when the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is fully completed.

 995.
 996.
“it was also announced that the Kuantan Port will be expanded to facilitate export and import,” he said during a media briefing at the 2024 Moh Karnival Makmur here today.

 1002.
“We raised that at least one condition must be complied with (by investors). That is (to employ) 80 per cent local workers. Initially, it’s acceptable to have maybe 60 per cent, but eventually (it must be) 80 per cent, and they agreed,” he said.

 1024.
 1025.
GEORGE TOWN, April 27 — The Penang government hopes to increase the number of facilities especially Muslim-friendly food outlets in order to strengthen the state’s tourism industry.

 1026.
 1027.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said this is because Penang is seen as having a high potential in the Muslim market among domestic and international tourists, thus making it a destination of choice.

 1028.
 1029.
“Today, there are many Muslim-friendly tour packages being promoted and as the state government, I see that we have a high potential in the Muslim market. However, we need to ensure that we have enough facilities, which are syariah-compliant, to meet the increase in Muslim tourists,” he said.

 1030.
 1031.
“Food is always an important matter as most tourists come here to eat, and we do not have enough (Muslim-friendly) food outlets. Therefore, we need to have many more outlets offering a variety of food choices as well as more comfortable facilities so that it will not only help to increase tourist arrivals but also boost the state’s economy.”

 1032.
 1033.
Chow said this to reporters at a press conference after officiating the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair Penang 2024 at the Setia Spice Arena here today.

 1034.
 1035.
Meanwhile, the fair’s chairman Carolyn Leong said this time the fair is targetting RM35 million worth of sales through various tour package offers to both domestic and international destinations, in addition to the participation of several agents of umrah packages.

 1036.
 1037.
“We are grateful to the state government for its efforts in enabling many tour packages to be offered with direct flights from Penang to destinations of choice, thus reducing the inconvenience for travellers who will no longer need to go to Kuala Lumpur to board a flight,” he also said.

 1038.
 1039.
He added that 40,000 visitors, from the northern states in the country, are expected to attend the two-day fair, beginning today. — Bernama

 1159.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — The Territorial Sea Act 2012 (Act 750) remains valid and applicable throughout Malaysia, including in Terengganu, despite the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly’s decision to reject its use, unless declared otherwise by the court, said the Prime Minister’s Office.

 1160.
 1161.
In a statement today, the PMO asserted that it was the Federal Government’s position that Act 750 was enacted and passed by Parliament lawfully under the Federal Constitution.

 1162.
 1163.
“It is the Federal Government’s responsibility to ensure that Malaysia’s sovereign rights, including Malaysian waters, are always protected,” read the statement in response to several press reports that stated the Terengganu state assembly had rejected the implementation of Act 750.

 1165.
The PMO said the purpose of Act 750 was to provide provisions regarding Malaysia’s territorial waters and to preserve the integrity of Malaysia’s territorial borders and sovereign rights, as well as to ensure the security and integrity of its territory.

 1166.
 1167.
According to the statement, the enactment of the act was also to fulfill Malaysia’s obligations under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

 1169.
“In line with the values of Malaysia Madani, it is reiterated here that the Federal Government always provides development allocations to all states including Terengganu,” it read.

 1255.
 1256.
KUALA PERLIS, April 27 — All parties are reminded to be careful and not to play the issue of race, religion and royalty (3R), especially on social media platforms, throughout the Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) by-election campaigning period which began today.

 1257.
 1258.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to increase monitoring to detect any illegal posts.

 1259.
 1260.
“MCMC has also said that they will not hesitate to call anyone who violates the laws of our country specifically in relation to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and if necessary, they can be summoned to have their statement recorded, have their devices confiscated and be brought to court.

 1261.
 1262.
“I hope Malaysians take a lesson from the series of cases that have been brought to court and those who put extreme comments, can be fined and if they fail to pay the fine then the punishment is imprisonment,” he said.

 1263.
 1264.
He told reporters after attending the Jiwa Madani programme in Kampung Seberang Ramai, here today.

 1265.
 1266.
Fahmi said the parties involved in the by-election are urged to campaign in a healthy manner, use facts and avoid touching on sensitive matters.

 1267.
 1268.
He said if it happens, MCMC will immediately call those involved and it will not only be those who upload related content but also those who put in outrageous comments.

 1269.
 1270.
“So be careful, be moderate in our campaigning... the important thing is that we want the people, especially the voters of Kuala Kubu Baru state constituency, to have the best choice by May 11,” he said.

 1271.
 1272.
The KKB by-election, which saw a four-cornered contest involving candidates from Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional, Parti Rakyat Malaysia and Independent, was held following the death of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 due to cancer.

 1273.
 1274.
The Election Commission (EC) set the voting day for the by-election on May 11 with early voting on May 7.

 1275.
 1276.
Earlier, at the event, Fahmi presented the appointment letters for the establishment of the Madani Community to 45 community leaders and representatives throughout the state of Perlis involving 15 state constituencies.

 1277.
 1278.
He said it is hoped the appointment would help to disseminate information about government policies to the grassroots so that the people get the accurate information.

 1279.
 1280.
“For example, we created a third account for EPF (Employee Provident Fund Fund) which is to enable the people to spend wisely while making use of the contributions that have been made in EPF.

 1281.
 1282.
“The review of the Public Service Remuneration Scheme that will be announced by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) from May 1 onwards and there are several other efforts that we see the Prime Minister working on as part of what I call the Prime Minister’s mission for Malaysia,” he said.

 1283.
 1284.
Fahmi also hopes that the Madani Community can be the eyes and ears of the government to ensure that information related to government policies reaches the grassroots level. — Bernama

 1304.
 1305.
SEBUYAU, April 27 — Sarawak aims to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production by 2027, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

 1306.
 1307.
He said food security remains the Sarawak government’s priority, and new rice fields cultivated with high-yield hybrid seedlings have been created in various districts in the state.

 1308.
 1309.
“If Gedong, Tanjung Purun, Lingga, Sri Aman and Limbang have all cultivated their rice fields with the high-yield seedlings, then maybe there is no need for us to import rice one day — maybe we can even export rice,” he said in his speech during a ‘Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri’ programme held at the Sebuyau community hall today.

 1310.
 1311.
Abang Johari said the hybrid rice seedlings would produce eight metric tonnes of rice per hectare; an eight-fold increase compared to conventional seedlings that produce 1.2 metric tonnes per hectare.

 1312.
 1313.
“In 24 months, there are five seasons for the rice to be harvested and this would translate to 40 metric tonnes of rice produced in the same period,” he said.

 1314.
 1315.
Touching on developments in Sebuyau, the premier said he approved the construction of a new building for SMK Sebuyau costing between RM50 million and RM60 million using state funds before seeking reimbursement from the federal government.

 1316.
 1317.
He added the Batang Lupar bridge is expected to be open to the public in 2026, which will shorten the travel distance between Sebuyau and other districts. He also highlighted the ongoing retaining wall project here to prevent saltwater intrusion.

 1318.

 1343.
 1344.
She said this was based on the investigations conducted by the JKM and the police against the private elderly care home.

 1345.
 1346.
“Once the investigation is complete, we will order the welfare home to close.

 1347.
 1348.
“I urge those tasked with caring for the elderly to fulfil their responsibilities diligently. We must always remember that someday, we too will depend on others for care and protection,” she said after attending the Kuching District Office Aidilfitri open house here today.

 1349.
 1350.
On Thursday (April 25), Kulim district police chief Supt Mohd Azizul Mohd Khairi reportedly said that the police had arrested the owner and helper of the welfare home to assist in investigations into the incident.

 1351.
 1352.
He said that the police had received a report about an incident where a 70-year-old inmate of the welfare home had allegedly been beaten with a stick.

 1375.

 1376.
 1377.
SERDANG, April 27 — Malaysia needs at least 6,000 veterinarians to meet the industry demands, including improving animal husbandry methods, compared to the current 2,300 veterinarians.

 1378.
 1379.
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali said Malaysia also aims to achieve a ratio of one veterinarian to 5,000 people (who own pets/livestock), compared to one veterinarian to 14,000 people currently.

 1380.
 1381.
“We need approximately 6,000 more veterinarians to help us achieve the aspirations of sustainability and food security,” he told reporters after officiating the World Veterinary Day 2024 at the Livestock section of the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) here today.

 1382.
 1383.
He said the shortage of veterinarians is also contributed by the educational opportunities offered in the country and the capacity of two local universities, namely Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), to accommodate the number of applications for veterinary courses, which reach around 3,000 applications each year.

 1384.
 1385.
However, he said UPM only produces 140 to 150 veterinary graduates, while UMK produces around 40 veterinarians every year.

 1386.
 1387.
“Therefore, we need to strengthen cooperation at the ministry level, including the Ministry of Higher Education, local and private universities. We also need to provide incentive packages or the equivalent of medical officers’ benefits that could increase involvement in this industry,” he said.

 1388.
 1389.
The World Veterinary Day celebration with the theme ‘Veterinarians Are Essential Health Workers’, organised by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and attended by DVS director-general, Dr Akma Ngah Hamid, provided various activities such as the sale of agricultural equipment products, animal feed, exhibitions of sado (muscular or meaty) cattle, as well as cat examinations and grooming.

 1423.
 1424.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said that the federal government has also allocated RM50 million for the Poverty Eradication Programme in Terengganu this year, which includes assistance for repairing dilapidated houses.

 1449.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was never confronted by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the ownership of a 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) subsidiary belonging to Malaysian fugitive Low Taek Jho’s Malaysian associate which Najib ultimately received US$30 million from.

 1450.
 1451.
MACC Senior Superintendent Nur Aida Arifin said this while under cross-examination as the 49th prosecution witness in Najib’s trial over the misappropriation of 1MDB’s RM2.27 billion here.

 1452.
 1453.
Najib’s lawyer Wan Azwan Aiman had earlier put it to Nur Aida that MACC investigators did not present any documents pertaining to the ownership of Blackstone Asia Real Estate Partners, where US$30 million had trickled down from 1MDB Energy (Langat) Limited’s US$1.64 billion before reaching Najib’s private AmIslamic bank account.

 1454.
 1455.
This, he said, took place during Najib’s interrogation into MACC’s investigation of 1MDB in 2018.

 1456.
 1457.
Based on banking documents, Blackstone’s beneficiary owner is Eric Tan Kim Loong — widely known as Low’s associate.

 1458.
 1459.
“Agreed,” she replied under cross-examination.

 1460.
 1461.
The prosecution on the first day of trial had described Tan as Low’s “shadow” and Low as Najib’s mirror image and alter ego.

 1462.
 1463.
Nur Aida had also agreed with Wan Azwan’s suggestion that Najib believed that Blackstone was owned by the late King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah.

 1464.
 1465.
Previously, the 47th prosecution witness Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) analyst Adam Ariff Mohd Roslan said the entire process in which RM2.27 billion from 1MDB was sent out and ultimately ended up in Najib’s two AmIslamic accounts could be identified as four phases, namely the “Good Star” phase, the “Aabar-BVI” phase, the “Tanore” phase and the “Options Buyback” phase.

 1466.
 1467.
In his testimony, Adam Ariff said the aforementioned US$30 million during the second ‘Aabar-BVI’ phase were transferred from Blackstone Asia Real Estate Partners’s Standard Chartered Bank account in Singapore to “AmPrivate Banking-MR” between October 30 and November 20, 2012.

 1468.
 1469.
Imprisoned since August 23, 2022, Najib is serving a 12-year jail sentence for the misappropriation of SRC International’s RM42 million funds. This was recently reduced to six years of jail and a RM50 million fine, from the initial RM210 million, by the Pardons Board.

 1517.
KUALA TERENGGANU, April 27 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the government has no plans to temporarily suspend the service of Fennec and HOM helicopters.

 1519.
“So far it’s not in that direction (temporary suspension),” he told reporters after completing the handover of ‘Rumah Kasih Ihsan’ at Kampung Dusun Tembakau in Manir, near here today.

 1520.
 1521.
Mohamed Khaled said this when asked if there was a need to suspend the services of both types of helicopters following the crash on Tuesday morning involving the Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM-AW139) and Fennec helicopter (M502-6) at the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Lumut, Perak which killed 10 RMN officers and personnel including three women.

 1522.
 1523.
All the remains of the crew who died in the crash had been laid to rest with the last body, Lieutenant T Sivasutan, 31, cremated at the Manjung Hindu Sabha Sanathana Dharma Ashram Crematorium Centre in Sitiawan at 12.15pm on Thursday.

 1524.
 1525.
In the meantime, Mohamed Khaled confirmed that the wreckage of the two aircraft, including the black box, had already been removed from the scene of the incident, on Thursday.

 1552.
CHERAS, April 27 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the public can make their own decisions on whether election laws were broken in the build-up to the Kuala Kubu Baru by-elections.

 1553.
 1554.
Saifuddin was responding to the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) after the electoral watchdog questioned the Selangor state government for planning a Hari Raya Aidilfitri event shortly after the nomination of by-election candidates in Kuala Kubu Baru today.

 1555.
 1556.
“We respect Bersih’s view. In by-elections we are governed by clear existing laws be it the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act or other laws. Bersih made their opinions public and all parties I believe can make their conclusions based on the advice given,” he told reporters today when met.

 1557.
 1558.
Bersih chided the government for organising the open house event adding that organising the Aidilfitri open house conflicts with provisions under the Election Offences Act 1954.

 1559.
 1560.
It said giving or serving food and giving out money during the election period are offences under Section 8 (bribery in the form of feasting) and Section 10 (bribery) under the Election Offences Act 1954.

 1561.
 1562.
Bersih had also criticised the RM5.21 million announcement by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to upgrade public infrastructure facilities in Kuala Kubu Baru ahead of the by-election.

 1563.
 1564.
The electoral watchdog said that the move violated its 3C guidelines which stand for “No Conditions, No Campaign and No Candidates”.

 1565.
 1566.
The Kuala Kubu Baru state by-election is held following the death of the incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong representing Pakatan Harapan (PH) on March 21.

 1661.
In a statement today, MoH clarified that as per the Food Regulations 1985 under the Food Act 1983, benzoyl peroxide is permitted as a food conditioner in flour at a maximum rate of 50 mg per kg.

 1662.
 1663.
"The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), an international body affiliated with the United Nations' Joint Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Food Standards Programme (FAO/WHO), has approved the use of benzoyl peroxide as an additive in wheat flour, not exceeding 60 mg per kg," stated the announcement.

 1664.
 1665.
"The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives has evaluated and confirmed that benzoyl peroxide is safe for use in food, both in Malaysia and internationally, within specified limits," it stated.

 1666.
 1667.
MoH emphasised that it has acknowledged the concerns circulating on social media regarding the purported health impacts of using benzoyl peroxide in wheat flour, and has previously issued two media statements in 2012 and 2017, to prevent any confusion on the matter.

 1668.
 1669.
The statement also mentioned that MoH continuously monitors various flour brands on the market to ensure the additive is within the permitted levels.

 1670.
 1671.
"Consumers with concerns regarding food safety issues can contact any district health office, the nearest state health department, or visit the website and Facebook page of the Food Safety and Quality Programme," the statement added. ― Bernama

 1711.
HULU SELANGOR, April 27 ― The Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) state by-election is the time for Barisan Nasional (BN) to return Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) favour in assisting Umno candidates in the previous elections, said Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

 1712.
 1713.
The BN chairman said PKR, Amanah and DAP had lent their support to Umno candidates in the Tioman, Pelangai and Kemaman by-elections.

 1714.
 1715.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said BN would mobilise its machinery to help PH candidate for the by-election Pang Sock Tao.

 1716.
 1717.
“We will deploy our machinery across eight PDM (polling district centres) and approach voters, including those from the Orang Asli community. We will support those who represent the unity government.

 1718.
 1719.
“Our principle is clear, if a seat was previously held by one of the component parties within the unity government, we will give it to them unless there are other reasons,” he told reporters after accompanying Pang to submit her nomination papers at the Hulu Selangor Multipurpose Hall and District Sports Complex here today.

 1720.
 1721.
Responding to MCA’s stance not to campaign in the KKB by-election unless the candidate is from BN, Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that the party would mobilise its machinery at the state level to help the unity government candidate.

 1722.
 1723.
“We understand their feelings. I believe the situation will change as Umno and MCA have been friends since 1974,” he said.

 1724.
 1725.
Meanwhile, when asked about an old video of Pang criticising Barisan Nasional that has resurfaced, Ahmad Zahid described it as a malicious act by the Opposition.

 1726.
 1727.
“For now, let’s close the old chapter, open a new one, and find the best approach,” he said.
