18.

The Cecil Hotel is one of LA’s most famous hotels, thanks in part to its dark history. Home to murderers, maniacs, and ghosts, some say the Cecil is anything but your average hotel, they say it’s cursed. In 1985 the Cecil was home to not only infamous serial killer Richard Ramirez, but fellow killer Jack Unterweger as well. Over the years it’s also been the sight of a string of strange deaths, most recently that of Elisa Lam. 21-year-old Elisa’s body was found in February 2013, two weeks after her death, when the hotel patrons and staff began complaining that the water had begun to taste and look strange. Her body had been unknowingly decomposing inside the rooftop water tanks for two full weeks. An investigation led police to a very strange hotel security video. The video shows Elisa entering the elevator alone, stopping to press the buttons on the panel. After several failed attempts at working the buttons, she exits the elevator and appears to have a conversation with someone who isn’t there. She then walks away, and moments later the elevator doors shut. Authorities believe that after this video was recorded, Elisa gained access to the water tank and drowned. The rooftop area of the hotel is protected by an alarm and considerably difficult for someone to gain access to, let alone climb inside and close the lid. Even weirder is that an autopsy of Elisa’s body found no drugs or alcohol in her system at all. Elisa is only one of the many bizarre deaths at The Cecil. In 62, Pauline Otton jumped from her ninth-floor room, killing George Gianinni when her body landed on him. The unsolved murder of Goldie Osgood, aka the Pigeon woman. She was found robbed, strangled, raped, and stabbed inside her seventh floor room, long before Richard Ramirez stayed at the hotel. Ramirez, aka The Night Stalker, became infamous when he terrorized LA from 1984-85, killing 13 women, all of which he did while staying in the top floor of the Cecil. According to tour guides he would dump his bloody clothes in the dumpsters out back after a night of killing. Jack Underweger, a Ramirez copycat killer, murdered three prostitutes while staying at the Cecil, which many believe he chose as a nod to the Night Stalker himself.

 36.

Couples have a lot of reasons to be attracted to the Evergreen State. From sleek Seattle boutiques to secluded inns on the San Juan Islands, there’s a little something for every romantic in this corner of the Pacific Northwest. Outdoorsy couples will love hiking in the romantic Snoqualmie Valley, in the shadow of one of Washington’s many waterfalls, while city-slickers will fall in love with Seattle’s funky food scene and vibrant nightlife. So if you’re planning a romantic getaway with that special someone to Washington State, be sure to consider these hotels ready for romance. 1.&nbspOutlook Inn, Orcas Island, San Juan Islands Couples have plenty of reasons to be attracted to the Evergreen State. From hip Seattle boutiques to secluded inns on the San Juan Islands, there's a little something for everyone in this corner of the Pacific Northwest. Check out some of our favorite hotels ready for romance here. The Outlook Inn is aptly named; the hotel has stunning views of Eastsound from almost anywhere you stand. This property is the only full-service hotel in Eastsound and its romantic ambience, on-site chapel, and excellent food from the New Leaf Cafe make it a popular spot for wedding parties. Units vary greatly, though, as standard rooms have seen better days while suites feature updated private bathrooms with large tubs, luxe details such as fireplaces and flat-screen TVs, and killer views. 2.&nbspSalish Lodge & Spa, Snoqualmie Valley The Salish Lodge & Spa features 84 rooms in a gorgeous setting overlooking the falls in Snoqualmie, about a 40-minute drive from Seattle. The historic property, which originally opened with only eight rooms back in 1916, is a popular romantic getaway and wedding destination. The restaurants feature beautiful views, and the elegant spa has numerous signature treatments (including one with homemade honey!). Sexy rooms have wood-burning fireplaces and peek-a-boo bathrooms with two-person tubs. The entire property has a soothing, rustic-luxe style; features such as stone fireplaces, stacked firewood, cashmere throws, bookcases, and warm, earth tones complement the outdoor scenery. 3.&nbspFour Seasons Hotel Seattle, Downtown, Seattle It’s hard to go wrong with this top luxury hotel that has some of the best views in Seattle, not to mention a restaurant with an acclaimed local chef, a rooftop infinity pool, and 147 spacious, classically comfortable rooms. The business-y surroundings might preclude the opulence of larger Four Seasons properties, but what you lose in neighborhood ambiance you gain in vistas and proximity to the best Seattle attractions.

 45.

These aren't your typical bell boys. Henn-Na will be housed on the grounds of Huis Ten Bosch, a Japanese theme park, and will initially feature three "actoids" (robots designed in the human likeness) to work as receptionists, according to CNN. Eventually, the owners hope that 90% of the staff will be robots. The robots will do an array of tasks, like conversing with guests at check-in — while exuding a natural "warmth" — as well as cleaning, according to the hotel's website. There will also be human staff on hand to assist. The hotel's high-tech features don't end with robots. There will also be a facial-recognition system to enter hotel rooms as a way to replace traditional keys. Human-like robots — depending on what you define as "human-like" — aren't just found in science fiction movies anymore, so a robot-staffed hotel isn't as out-there as it may seem. In fact, retail chain Lowe's unveiled an in-store robot clerk called OSHbot last year. It's a 5-feet-tall machine that can help consumers on the floor of retail hardware stores. There's also ChihiraAico, which Toshiba showed off at the International CES this year, a machine designed to "achieve real heart-warming communication with human-like facial expression." Let's just hope ChihiraAico, OSHbot and the Strange Hotel robots don't put too many concierges out of work.

 54.

Friendly, arty, welcoming, beautiful, atmospheric. The epithets applied to Dublin are familiar. (And while we're on the subject of Dublinish words, lets get the word craic out of the way. It can be good there, as you know). Dublin has a reputation for welcoming folk in, so there's no shortage of choice when it comes to the best places to stay in Dublin, and there's plenty of great options across the price brackets. Despite being a capital city, Dublin feels compact and more village-y than most European capitals. It's got some beautiful architecture - from its medieval castle and cathedrals to the Georgian splendour of some of its houses - but it's also got some corkers, and it's the miss-matched effect which really gives Dublin its great character. Dublin also has a wonderful mix of strong local traditions and cosmopolitan forward thinking. There are a thousand pubs to choose from, but there are also restaurants serving food from all over the world. If you're looking for pub suggestions try Kehoes in South Anne Street, which is authentic and quirky, and has a country pub type atmosphere, or the The Long Hall on South St George's Street. Known for being a great place to have a good time, Dublin's live music scene plays a big part. It's easy to find out what's on, but if you're not sure what kind of thing you'll enjoy maybe try The Cobblestone at Smithfield, or O'Donohhoe's on Merrion Row. If you're after traditional Irish music try the Brian Brou on Prospect Road or The Bleeding Horse on Upper Camden Street. As well as the pubs, the people and the music, Dublin's appeals include its museums and galleries. The Irish Museum of Modern Art houses a good collection of modern and contemporary art and has frequent visiting exhibitions. The Hugh Lane Gallery has a collection of contemporary art and includes a reconstruction of the studio of Francis Bacon, relocated lock, stock and barrel from London. Or try a lesser-known permanent exhibition in the Chester Beatty Library at Dublin Castle: Sacred Exhibitions, a display of sacred texts and icons from many world religions. The Book of Kells in the Old Library of Trinity College is a highlight for many. Ancient, and staggeringly intricate, this book of gospels was created by monks around 800AD. Another great attraction for lovers of history is Kilmainham Jail, one of the biggest unoccupied jails in Europe. Inside is an interesting and affecting exhibition charting Ireland's journey towards independence. For a completely authentic sporting experience, the best places to stay in Dublin will point you in the direction of a hurling match at Croke Park which is excellent. Like a cross between the most hotly contested rugby match you can imagine and polo (without horses), it is fast and furious.

 63.

The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden at 421 East 61st Street in Manhattan has announced the promotion of Acting Director Terri Daly to Museum Director. A graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Daly holds an M.B.A. from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University. She joined the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden in 2003 and has held positions as Interpreter, Educator, and most recently Marketing Manager. “I am honored to have the opportunity to continue sharing the unique story of the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden in my new role as Director” Daly said in a statement ot the press announcing her new appointment. “As one of the oldest buildings in Manhattan and the only surviving day hotel, the Museum provides visitors with unparalleled insight into the travel, leisure, work, and play of 19th-century New York City.” “We are so pleased that after more than a decade of experience at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, Terri Daly has been promoted to Museum Director, ” said Sharon W. Vaino, President General of The Colonial Dames of America, the organization that owns and operates the Museum. “Her business education, fundraising background, and extensive experience in various aspects of the Museum’s work will help to propel the Museum forward as it builds on its recent reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums and develops its potential as a lead interpreter of leisure time and travel in Manhattan in the early 19thcentury.” Constructed in 1799 as a carriage house and converted into a day hotel in 1826, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden transports the visitor back to the Mount Vernon Hotel, a country resort for New Yorkers escaping the crowded city below 14th Street. The Hotel advertised itself as “free from the noise and dust of the public roads, and fitted up and intended for only the most genteel and respectable” clientele. The eight period rooms interpret the diverse group of people who frequented and worked at the hotel from 1826-1833. The Museum’s collection consists of approximately 1, 100 items, including 18th and 19th-century ceramics, furniture, kitchen implements, letters, maps, paintings, and prints representing the history of Manhattan’s Mount Vernon neighborhood, the history of the Mount Vernon Hotel, and the history of hotels and leisure in 19th-century America. The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is $8 Adults, $7 Senior/Students, and free for Children under 12 and Museum Members. Group tours and education programs for grades K-12 can be reserved in advance. Changing exhibitions and public programs are also offered throughout the year.
