A northern West Virginia region still cleaning up from flash flooding less than two weeks ago was hit with torrential rains that sent creeks over their banks again Thursday night.

A flash flood warning was issued for the Wheeling area, about an hour’s drive southwest of Pittsburgh. The National Weather Service said up to 2 inches of rain fell, and more was possible later.

Residents posted video on social media showing streets turned into rivers. Some said the storms formed quickly and that homes that were hit from the last round of flooding were taking on water again.

Much of the Eastern U.S. suffered through days of dangerous heat this week before the latest storms arrived. The West Virginia Emergency Management Division posted a photo of a measuring tape in floodwaters with the caption, “From ‘dry as a bone to 5 inches’ in 45 minutes this evening in the Elm Grove area.”

“If you’re in a low-lying or flood-prone area, be ready to move to higher ground,” the agency said.

On June 14, nine people, including a 3-year-old, died when as much as 4 inches of rain fell in parts of Wheeling and Ohio County within 40 minutes. Dozens of homes, businesses and roads were impacted by flooding, and at least 75 vehicles were pulled from two area creeks. Gov. Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency in the county.

The unexpected deluge overwhelmed local waterways and infrastructure and submerged vehicles in small towns east of the Ohio River, including Triadelphia and Valley Grove, CBS affiliate WTRF reported.

The body of Sandra Kay Parsons, 83, of Triadelphia, was found in the Ohio River on Tuesday. Officials in Ohio County released her identity after receiving confirmation from a medical examiner. Two other victims were identified last week: Jesse Pearson, 43, of Triadelphia; and Connie Veronis, 71, of Moundsville.

Seven of the nine victims were from Triadelphia, population 660.

In February, West Virginia was hit with heavy rains and dangerous flooding that left at least three people dead and caused millions of dollars in damage. Four months later, West Virginia’s McDowell County — one of the poorest counties in one of the poorest states in the U.S. — is still working to recover.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former journalist Lauren Sanchez are set to tie the knot in Italy this week, even as local frustrations mount over the multi-million dollar event.

Here’s what to know about the three-day wedding celebration, as well as the protests unfolding in the background.

Where and when is the wedding?

Bezos, 61, and Sanchez’s wedding extravaganza kicks off in Venice this Thursday, with the ceremony scheduled to take place Saturday at an undisclosed location.

The nuptials will mark Bezos’ second marriage, after his first marriage to philanthropist Mackenzie Scott ended in 2019. Sanchez, 55, was previously married to Patrick Whitesell, the executive chair of talent firm Endeavor, with their marriage also ending in 2019.

The wedding ceremony is likely to be held on San Giorgio Maggiore, according to CNN. One of the islands that make up Venice, San Giorgio Maggiore is known for the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in the 1500s.

A protest group called “No Space for Bezos” declared victory this week, saying that the couple has moved their planned post-wedding party on June 28 to a shipyard on the outskirts of Venice rather than the 14th-century Grande Scuola Misericordia in central Venice, CNN reported.

How much will the Bezos-Sanchez wedding cost?

The three-day event could cost between about $64 million to $76 million, Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto regional government that comprises Venice, told reporters on Tuesday, according to The Globe and Mail.

About 80% of the wedding provisions will be sourced from Venetian vendors, the Associated Press reported, citing people close to the couple. These products include locally made pastries and hand-blown glass from Murano, an island known for its long history of glassmaking.

Bezos has a net worth of $230 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. That ranks him No. 3 on the index’s list of the world’s richest people, after Mark Zuckerberg ($246 billion) and Elon Musk ($385 billion)

Who is attending?

Bezos and Sanchez invited about 200 guests to celebrate with them in the Italian city, according to media reports. The event is expected to draw plenty of star power, with guests said to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom and President Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump.

According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, at least 95 private planes have requested permission to land at Venice’s Marco Polo airport.

Who is Lauren Sanchez?

Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and owner of The Washington Post, is marrying Lauren Sanchez, a former journalist turned children’s book author. The couple went public with their relationship in 2019 and became engaged in 2023.

Sanchez recently participated in Blue Origin’s first all-women’s space flight, which included “CBS Mornings” anchor Gayle King and singer-songwriter Katy Perry. A licensed pilot, Sanchez pitched the idea for a female-led flight to Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, shortly after he completed his own trip to space in 2021.

Sanchez’s bachelorette party in Paris last month included Perry, Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Eva Longoria, according to AFP.

What are the wedding protests about?

Some Venice locals are expressing frustration over the city’s decision to welcome wealthy tourists while failing to meet residents’ needs.

This comes amid a broader pushback against tourism in parts of Europe. Last week, protestors gathered in Venice and other popular European destinations to protest a flood of visitors, who some critics blame for driving up housing costs and pushing out local residents. For the second year, Venice is requiring people visiting the city for a day to pay a tax to enter on certain summer dates.

Among those protesting the wedding are the organizers of the “No Space for Bezos” campaign, which has the backing of a dozen different local organizations including housing advocates and university groups.

Greenpeace joined the mix on Monday, with a handful of activists unfurling a giant banner in Venice’s St. Mark’s Square with a photo of Bezos and text that read: “IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.” Local police folded up the banner and took it away.

Venetian officials have stood their ground, even as criticism of the event escalated. In March, the city issued a statement denying reports that there would be any major disruption to daily Venetian life, even with hundreds expected to descend on the city this week for the wedding.

Venice and the surrounding metropolitan area has a population of roughly 250,000, according to Statista. But fewer than 50,000 people live in the city’s historic district, which is composed over 100 islands connected by Venice’s famous canals and footbridges.

AFP and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

At least 3% of measles cases confirmed so far this year have been in people who received two doses of the measles vaccine, meaning they were fully vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

About three dozen of the nearly 1,200 measles infections in 2025 have been in people with two vaccine doses, the agency said Friday in its weekly update on cases. An additional 2% of cases were in people who received at least one dose of the measles vaccine.

Many of the cases were in Texas, which on Tuesday counted a 21st confirmed measles case in someone with at least two doses of the vaccine.

Lara Anton, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services, said Monday that their first 20 cases were in children 8 years old or younger. Anton did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the additional case, which was reported on Tuesday.

A CDC spokesperson said in an email their data reflects vaccination status at the time someone was exposed to the virus. This means none of the 36 vaccinated cases they confirmed Friday received their second dose as a result of post-exposure prophylaxis. Post-exposure prophylaxis is offering someone a drug or vaccine after they are exposed to a germ, to reduce the chance they will be infected or develop severe disease.

The CDC says people exposed to measles can get vaccinated within 72 hours of when they were first exposed, if they are not fully immunized. “If administered within 72 hours of initial measles exposure, MMR vaccine might provide some protection against infection or modify the clinical course of disease,” the agency’s recommendations say.

The CDC spokesperson said, “The MMR vaccine is the best way to protect against measles and its complications.”

“Disease symptoms are generally milder in vaccinated people,” the spokesperson said. “People who are vaccinated are also less likely to spread the disease to other people.”

“The decision to vaccinate is a personal one,” the spokesperson said. “People should consult with their healthcare provider to understand their options to get a vaccine and should be informed about the potential risks and benefits associated with vaccines.”

Texas has seen a deadly outbreak of the highly contagious virus this year. While cases there have recently slowed, CDC officials have said that authorities have been tracking more outbreaks in other communities across the U.S. linked to travel outside and inside the country.

“Additional cases have been seeded from the outbreak in Texas, as well as related outbreaks in Mexico and Canada. Additionally, measles importation from international travel continues, especially as the busy summer of travel season ramps up,” Brian Wakeman, deputy lead of the CDC’s measles laboratory task force, said Monday.

Wakeman, who spoke on a nationwide call for testing laboratories, said the U.S. is now on pace to top the 1,274 cases of measles seen in 2019. That was the most cases the U.S. has seen in a single year since endemic spread of the virus was declared “eliminated” at the end of the 20th century.

“We’re also on pace to be the greatest number of measles cases since the early 90s,” Wakeman said.

None of the confirmed measles cases that led to hospitalizations this year had documented evidence of receiving two doses of vaccine, the CDC spokesperson said. More than 8 in 10 of the cases have been in people 20 years old or older.

Six cases of measles in people who received at least two doses of the vaccine were in Colorado, that state’s health department says.

“None of the six cases with 2+ doses were seniors or required hospitalization,” Hope Shuler, a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said in an email.

Health authorities and experts have called for some seniors to check if they need a measles booster, especially if they are planning to travel, because of the kind of measles vaccines that were used before 1968.

“That group is unlikely to have robust immunity from infection, because at that point in time, they were using less effective vaccines,” said Dr. Celine Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News.

Colorado says many of its vaccinated cases have been in residents who were exposed during travel to other parts of the world facing large outbreaks like Canada and Europe.

The state previously said it had linked multiple cases to an infectious traveler who exposed others at Denver International Airport and on a Turkish Airlines flight.

The CDC has issued new guidance for summer camps to prepare for the threat of measles spread this year, including urging camp operators to check for documentation of immunity among staff and children.

Measles vaccines are 97% effective at preventing measles after two doses and 93% after one dose, the CDC says.

Israel and Iran traded more missile attacks Sunday despite calls for a halt to the fighting, with neither country backing down as their conflict raged for a third day. The exchange of fire comes as talks on Iran’s nuclear program in Oman between the U.S. and Iran were called off.

Iran said Israel struck its oil refineries, killed the intelligence chief of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and hit population centers in intensive aerial attacks that raised the death toll in the country since Israel launched its major campaign Friday to 224 people. Health authorities also reported that 1,277 were wounded, without distinguishing between military officials and civilians.

Israel — widely believed to be the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East — has aimed its missiles at Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program and military leadership. Israel said Iran has fired over 270 missiles since Friday, 22 of which had slipped through the country’s sophisticated multi-tiered air defenses as of Sunday and caused havoc in residential suburbs, killing 14 people and wounding 390 others.

Warning sirens sounded again in Israel early Monday morning as Israel’s military said Iran had again launched another wave of missiles. Local Israeli media reported multiple injuries after at least one appeared to break through the country’s air defenses.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that if the Israeli strikes on Iran stop, then “our responses will also stop.” He said the United States “is a partner in these attacks and must take responsibility.”

Explosions echoed across Tehran and were reported elsewhere in the country early Sunday.

In Israel, at least 10 people were killed in Iranian strikes overnight and into Sunday, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service. It brought the country’s total death toll to 14, including a 10-year-old and a 9-year-old in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv, since the strikes began on Friday night.

Israel’s defense minister warned Saturday that “Tehran will burn” if Iran continues firing missiles at Israel.

Speaking after an assessment meeting with the army’s chief of staff, Defense Minister Israel Katz said Iran will pay a heavy price for harming Israeli citizens.

“If (Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,” Katz said.

Following Israel’s expanded assault, Katz followed up early Sunday morning with a post that read, “Tehran is burning.”

Claiming to operate almost freely in the skies over Iran, Israel said its attacks Sunday hit Iran’s Defense Ministry, missile launch sites and factories producing air defense components.

Iran also acknowledged Israel had killed three more of its top generals, including Gen. Mohammad Kazemi, the Revolutionary Guard intelligence chief.

But Israeli strikes have increasingly extended beyond Iranian military installations to hit government buildings including the Foreign Ministry and several energy facilities, Iranian authorities said, most recently sparking huge fires at the Shahran oil depot north of Tehran and a fuel tank south of the city.

Those new targets Sunday, coming after Israel attacked Iran’s South Pars, the world’s largest natural gas field, raised the prospect of a broader assault on Iran’s heavily sanctioned energy industry that remains vital to the global economy and markets.

Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh and other Iranian diplomats shared photos of the Foreign Ministry’s offices and library laid to waste by flying shrapnel.

Iran’s state TV broadcast footage of a dust-covered man carrying a baby away from the ruins of a residential building and a woman covered in blood making panicked phone call from the site of an Israeli missile strike in downtown Tehran. The spokesperson for Iran’s Health Ministry, Hossein Kermanpour, said 90% of the 224 people killed were civilians.

The Washington-based rights advocacy group, called Human Rights Activists, reported a far higher death toll in Iran from Israeli strikes, saying the attacks have killed at least 406 people and wounded another 654.

State TV reported that metro stations and mosques would be made converted into bomb shelters beginning Sunday night. Tehran residents told of long lines at gas stations and cars backed up for hours as families fled the city.

Traffic police closed a number of roads outside the city to control congestion. Energy officials on state TV sought to reassure the jittery public there was no gasoline shortage despite the long lines.

Iranian state-linked media acknowledged explosions and fires stemming from an attack on an Iranian refueling aircraft in Mashhad deep in the country’s northeast. Israel described the attack on Mashhad as the farthest strike it has carried out in Iranian territory.

Urgent calls to de-escalate

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has made the destruction of Iran’s nuclear program his top priority, brushed off urgent calls from world leaders to de-escalate, saying Israel’s strikes so far are “nothing compared to what they will feel under the sway of our forces in the coming days.”

Israel’s initial assault used warplanes — as well as drones smuggled into the country in advance, according to officials — to hit key facilities and kill top generals and scientists.

“The individuals who were eliminated played a central part of the progress toward nuclear weapons,” the IDF said in a news release. “Their elimination represents a significant blow to the Iranian regime’s ability to acquire weapons of mass destruction.”

Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel, where explosions lit the night skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and shook the buildings below. The Israeli military urged civilians, already rattled by 20 months of war in Gaza sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, to head to shelter for hours. U.S. officials confirmed to CBS News that U.S. forces helped Israel intercept Iranian missiles on Friday.

Iran calls nuclear talks “unjustifiable”

Israel’s ongoing strikes have halted — for now — diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran. Oman’s foreign minister, Badr al-Busaidi, said on social media that talks on Sunday “will not now take place,” but he added that “diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace.”

A senior administration official told CBS News, “While there will be no meeting Sunday, we remain committed to talks and hope the Iranians will come to the table soon.”

Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, said Saturday that the nuclear talks were “unjustifiable” after Israel’s strikes, which he said were the “result of the direct support by Washington.”

President Trump, who has expressed full support for Israel’s actions, offered a stark warning to Iran against retaliating against U.S. targets in the Middle East. He also predicted Israel and Iran would “soon” make a deal to end their escalating conflict.

In a post on his Truth Social account early Sunday, Mr. Trump reiterated that the U.S. was not involved in the attacks on Iran and warned that any retaliation directed against it would bring an American response “at levels never seen before.”

“However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!” he wrote.

Hours later, Mr. Trump took to social media again to predict, “Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal.”

The president claimed he has built a track record for de-escalating conflicts, and that he would get Israel and Iran to cease hostilities “just like I got India and Pakistan to make” after the two countries’ recent cross-border confrontation.

Mr. Trump also pointed to efforts by his administration during his first term to mediate disputes between Serbia and Kosovo and Egypt and Ethiopia.

“Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran!” he wrote. “Many calls and meetings now taking place. I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”

One of Mr. Trump’s allies in the senate, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, told “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday morning that Mr. Trump “sent a clear message to the Ayatollahs, that if you hit America in any way, whether our troops or our citizens or our ships, for instance, then you’re going to feel the full force and strength of the U.S. military in a way no one’s ever seen.”

Above-ground section of Natanz facility destroyed

Among the key sites Israel attacked was Iran’s main nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz, where black smoke could be seen rising into the air. It also appeared to strike a second, smaller nuclear enrichment facility in Fordo, about 60 miles southeast of Tehran, according to an Iranian news outlet close to the government that reported hearing explosions nearby.

Israel said it also struck a nuclear research facility in Isfahan, and said it destroyed dozens of radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers in western Iran. Iran confirmed the strike at Isfahan.

U.N. nuclear chief Rafael Grossi told the Security Council that the above-ground section of the Natanz facility was destroyed. The main centrifuge facility underground did not appear to have been hit, but the loss of power could have damaged the infrastructure there, he said.

Israel also struck a nuclear research facility in Isfahan. The International Atomic Energy Agency said four “critical buildings” were damaged, including its uranium conversion facility. It said there was no sign of increased radiation at Natanz or Isfahan.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with official procedures, said that according to the army’s initial assessment, “it will take much more than a few weeks” for Iran to repair the damage to the Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. The official said the army had “concrete intelligence that production in Isfahan was for military purposes.”

On “Face the Nation,” Cotton said Iran is “close to having enough pure weapons-grade uranium for several weapons,” and that’s why both Mr. Trump and Netanyahu thought “things were coming to a head” with Thursday night’s launch.

“A second reason is Iran is rapidly producing ballistic missiles, both medium range to target Israel, and short range to target our troops, and they add substantially to those stockpiles every single month,” Cotton added. “And at a time when Iran is both continuing its work on its nuclear program and trying to rebuild its offensive missile capacity, that the window to actually stop Iran from entering that zone of immunity was rapidly closing.”

A skier died after being caught in an avalanche on Alaska’s Mount McKinley, officials said Wednesday — just days after a climber fell 3,000 feet to his death on North America’s tallest peak.

Nicholas Vizzini, 29, of Washington state and his climbing partner, a snowboarder, triggered the avalanche high on the 20,310-foot peak Tuesday while descending a slope, according to a statement from Denali National Park and Preserve.

The top of where the avalanche released was at approximately 16,600 feet and ran down to about 15,000 feet, the park said.

Two mountaineering rangers on the mountain responded within minutes after spotting Vizzini’s partner amid the avalanche debris, the park statement said. They were able to detect a beacon signal and find Vizzini, who was mostly buried in debris. The rangers tried lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead early Tuesday evening, the statement said.

Vizzini’s body was recovered and transferred to the state medical examiner’s office. His partner sustained minor injuries and was scheduled to leave the mountain Wednesday, according to the statement.

There have been approximately 13 avalanche-related deaths and more than 130 total deaths on the mountain recorded in the history of the park, officials said Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Alex Chiu, a ski mountaineer from Seattle, died from a 3,000-foot fall on the mountain’s West Buttress climbing route. Chiu is one of multiple climbers who have died in falls since 1980 along this section of Mount McKinley’s West Buttress route, according to NPS.

The climbing season typically runs from early May to early July. There are about 500 climbers on Mount McKinley currently, the park said.

Mount McKinley had its name changed back from Denali in January in response to an executive order signed by President Trump after he took office.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and President Trump’s former adviser, said early Wednesday he regretted some of his recent criticisms of the president, in the wake of their public falling-out last week.

“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X.

Musk called Mr. Trump on Monday, according to a person familiar with the call. It’s unclear how the call went.

Vice President VD Vance and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles spoke with Musk on a call Friday, and a source close to the vice president confirmed to CBS News that Vance urged Musk to repair his relationship with Trump.

Their blistering break-up — largely carried out on social media before a riveted public on Thursday, June 5 — was ignited by Musk’s harsh criticism of Mr. Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful” spending bill currently before Congress.

The two wound up trading insults and accusations as their public feud reached new heights. Musk even publicly mused about creating a new political party.

Things got to the point where the president threatened Musk with “serious consequences” if he chose to fund Democrats in upcoming elections, though Mr. Trump didn’t say what those consequences would be. Musk’s companies have many lucrative federal contracts.

The president told NBC News’ Kristen Welker in a phone interview Saturday that he has no desire to rebuild his relationship with Musk, but the White House has sought to cool tension between the president and the technology billionaire.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday that Mr. Trump was “appreciative” of the public apology from Musk.

Olivia Rinaldi, Fin Daniel Gómez and Jennifer Jacobs contributed to this report.

A California woman is seeking millions in damages from Costco following an incident at one of the discount retailer’s stores that she claims left her with lasting injuries.

In a lawsuit filed in the Superior Court of Alameda on April 29, Sadie Novotny alleges she sustained “multiple, permanent and severe” injuries after a heavy liquor cabinet on display at a Costco Wholesale store in Santa Rosa fell on her “suddenly and without warning.”

Novotny was shopping at Costco with her husband on March 22 when the alleged incident occurred, according to the lawsuit. Novotny claims she suffered a closed head injury, or traumatic brain injury as a result.

Claude Wyle, an injury attorney and partner at Choulos, Choulos & Wyle who is representing Novotny, told CBS MoneyWatch that Novotny went to the emergency room after the incident and was diagnosed with a mild concussion. She continues to suffer from difficulty finding words, vision problems and headaches, he said.

Novotny is suing Costco for general negligence, premises liability and products liability. Wyle said his client is seeking millions in damages.

Wyle said Costco has a video of the alleged incident that has not been released to him, and which he likely won’t see until the formal discovery period of the lawsuit.

Costco did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch’s request for comment.

In her complaint, Novotny claims Costco acted negligently by failing to fix the dangerous conditions that led to the alleged incident. The lawsuit also alleges that the discount retailer failed to adequately train its employees to properly maintain merchandise and that each one bears some blame for Novotny’s injuries.

“The negligent conduct of defendants and each of them was a substantial factor in causing plaintiff’s injuries,” the lawsuit reads.

The lawsuit was moved to the U.S. District Court for Northern California last week at the request of Costco, Wyle said.

The Russia-backed Wagner Group said Friday it is leaving Mali after more than three and a half years of fighting Islamic extremists and insurgents in the country.

Despite Wagner’s announcement, Russia will continue to have a mercenary presence in the West African country. The Africa Corps, Russia’s state-controlled paramilitary force, said on its Telegram channel Friday that Wagner’s departure would not introduce any changes and the Russian contingent will remain in Mali.

Wagner is a group of entities that operate as a private military company, or PMC. These PMCs can be hired by governments for security or combat services.

“Mission accomplished. Private Military Company Wagner returns home,” the group announced via its channel on the messaging app Telegram. It said it had brought all regional capitals under control of the Malian army, pushed out armed militants and killed their commanders.

Mali, along with neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger, has for more than a decade battled an insurgency fought by armed groups, including some allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.

As Western influence in the region has waned, Russia has sought to step into the vacuum, sweeping in with offers of assistance. Moscow initially expanded its military cooperation with African nations by using the Wagner Group of mercenaries. But since the group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was killed in a plane crash in 2023, after mounting a brief armed rebellion in Russia that challenged the rule of President Vladimir Putin, Moscow has been developing the Africa Corps as a rival force to Wagner.

Africa Corps is under direct command of the Russian defense ministry.

According to U.S. officials, there are around 2,000 mercenaries in Mali. It is unclear how many are with Wagner and how many are part of the Africa Corps.

Beverly Ochieng, a security analyst specializing in the Sahel for Control Risks consultancy, said the Russian defense ministry had been negotiating with Mali to take on more Africa Corps fighters and for Wagner mercenaries to join Russia’s state-controlled paramilitary force.

“Since the death of Prigozhin, Russia has had this whole plan to then make the Wagner Group fall under the command of the Ministry of Defense. One of the steps they made was to revamp or introduce the Africa Corps, which is the way in which the Russian paramilitaries would retain a presence in areas where the Wagner group has been operating,” Ochieng said.

Wagner has been present in Mali since late 2021 following a military coup, replacing French troops and international peacekeepers to help fight the militants. But the Malian army and Russian mercenaries struggled to curb violence in the country and have both been accused of targeting civilians.

Last month, United Nations experts urged Malian authorities to investigate reports of alleged summary executions and forced disappearances by Wagner mercenaries and the army.

In December, Human Rights Watch accused Malian armed forces and the Wagner Group of deliberately killing at least 32 civilians over an 8-month span.

The announcement of Wagner’s withdrawal comes as the Malian army and the Russian mercenaries suffered heavy losses during attacks by the al-Qaida linked group JNIM in recent weeks.

Last week, JNIM fighters killed dozens of soldiers in an attack on a military base in central Mali.

Rida Lyammouri, a Sahel expert at the Morocco-based Policy Center for the New South, said the major losses might have caused the possible end of Wagner’s mission.

“The lack of an official and mutual announcement from both the Malian authorities and Wagner indicate possible internal dispute which led to this sudden decision. Simultaneously, this could point to a new framework for Russian presence in the country,” he said.

Replacing Wagner with Africa Corps troops would likely shift Russia’s focus in Mali from fighting alongside the Malian army to training, said Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel program at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

“Africa Corps has a lighter footprint and focuses more on training, providing equipment and doing protection services. They fight less than the ‘Rambo-type’ Wagner mercenaries,” Laessing said.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is asking Secretary of State Marco Rubio for information on the Trump administration’s contingency plans if billionaire Elon Musk breaches his companies’ current contracts with the U.S. amid the ongoing public fallout between him and President Trump.

In a letter to Rubio as acting national security adviser and obtained by CBS News, Warren said Mr. Trump and Musk’s public disagreements about the upcoming reconciliation bill that escalated into a public online spat could “have serious implications for U.S. national security.”

The Massachusetts Democrat mentioned Mr. Trump’s proposal to terminate Musk’s government contracts and subsidies, which the world’s richest man followed with a threat that SpaceX would “begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately.” Musk has since walked back his threat.

“No petty social media fight between the president and a billionaire should jeopardize U.S. national security,” Warren said.

In addition to contingency plans for SpaceX, the senator asked for information regarding the impact on U.S. agencies’ satellite communications if Musk’s Starlink is turned off. Additionally, she asked Rubio to provide any analysis that the Trump administration has conducted “of its authorities and options under the Defense Production Act to address vendor lock, monopolies, or contractor refusal to meet national security needs.”

She asked to receive answers to her questions by June 14, whether through a classified briefing or preferably a public response that can be released to Congress and the public, the letter said.

Warren has been a vocal opponent of Musk and his involvement in the Trump administration. Last week, she released a report that outlines instances her office has found of Musk benefiting from it.

Musk’s rocket company has received tens of billions of dollars from the federal government over the last decade, including $3.8 billion in the 2024 fiscal year alone, according to federal records.

The bulk of those federal grants are from NASA, which has paid SpaceX billions over the last decade to ferry astronauts and supplies to and from the International Space Station. The agency has also awarded SpaceX upwards of $2 billion in recent years to design and build a lunar lander, as part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon for the first time in a half-century.

While the public spat appears to have cooled somewhat, Mr. Trump told NBC News’ Kristen Welker in a phone interview on Saturday that he has no plans to make up with the mega-billionaire.

“I’m too busy doing other things,” Trump continued. “You know, I won an election in a landslide. I gave him a lot of breaks, long before this happened, I gave him breaks in my first administration, and saved his life in my first administration, I have no intention of speaking to him.”

When asked by a reporter Friday if he’s still considering rolling back subsidies to Musk as a money-saving move, Mr. Trump suggested he was open to it.

“He’s got a lot of money, he gets a lot of subsidy. So we’ll take a look at that,” the president said on Air Force One. “Only if it’s fair for him and for the country. I would certainly think about it, but it has to be fair.”

This isn’t the first time the president has needled Musk over his companies’ federal subsidies. In a 2022 feud, Mr. Trump claimed Musk would be “worthless” without hefty subsidies for “electric cars that don’t drive long enough” and “rocketships to nowhere.”

The two mended their relationship then and Musk spent hundreds of millions to help elect Mr. Trump in 2024. The billionaire went on to lead the Trump White House’s cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency until last week.

Joe Walsh contributed to this report.
