259.

In just a few days, the Class of 2024 will be saying farewell to a place they’ve called home for the past four years. I was part of a class that had a compromised first year, which was highlighted by classes being held via Zoom and students living without roommates.

 260.
As I reflect on what Vanderbilt gave me, one quick answer comes to mind: a voice.

 261.
Since I can remember, I have always been enamored with sports and how communities can find unity via athletics. Thanks to Vanderbilt and The Hustler, I unleashed my attachment to writing.

 262.
When I came to West End, I immediately noticed a clear disconnect between the Vanderbilt students and its sports teams. The Class of 2024 was stripped of several Vanderbilt traditions, such as when all the first-year students would charge the field at the first home football game (Anchor Dash). This tradition was key in getting a first-year class accustomed to the Vanderbilt Athletics community. All current classes have lost out on this tradition since it has been abandoned the past few years, which was fundamental in shaping a disconnect between current students and the Vanderbilt sports teams.

 263.
In the second semester of my first year, I was eager to persuade the students of the beauty of the indelible stories behind members of Vanderbilt Athletics. The Hustler allowed me to accomplish that mission.

 264.

Sam Curtis (left) and Andrew Wilf (right) analyzed what went wrong in Vanderbilt’s loss to Boston College on Nov. 29, 2023. 265.
The Hustler also provided me with an outlet. Some people go to television, social media or books for an outlet from the everyday stresses of being a college student, but I ran to sports journalism.

 266.
I felt a release of euphoria every single time I wrote a feature article. I am grateful to have spotlighted several people’s stories, such as Ken Seals regaining the starting quarterback position, Candice Storey Lee’s Vanderbilt family and the behind-the-scenes work done by the VandyBoys’ student managers.

 267.
I joined The Hustler in February of 2021 and I ran with the opportunities it gave me. Aside from previously working at FanWide as a sports blogger, my sports writing skills have yet to be developed. Thanks to former Sports Editors Simon Gibbs and Justin Hershey and their patience, I grew as both a writer and analytical thinker in my first two years at Vanderbilt.

 268.
When junior year came, my dream of being the Sports Editor of The Hustler deepened. In August of 2023, I traveled with the Vanderbilt Football team to cover the Commodores’ 63-10 win over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The one-week trip was an all-encompassing experience for me, as I watched every practice and was allowed to interview Clark Lea, Mike Wright, Jaylen Mahoney and other members of the Football team throughout the week.

 269.

Andrew Wilf (left) and Anish Mago (right) broke down Vanderbilt’s final game of the season on Nov. 25, 2023. 270.
The Hawaii trip also made me realize that I had a mission to show the student body the unique personalities and fulfilling stories of student-athletes.

 271.
This school year, Deputy Sports Editor Anish Mago and I made several trips to cover Vanderbilt Football and Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball. We drove to Wake Forest, Tennessee and Ole Miss. While Mago and I were 0-3 on our road trips, we had a ton of laughs.

 272.
My mission as Sports Editor was to provide people with stories worth telling and develop a stronger multimedia presence. This school year, The Hustler implemented Anchor Analysis, a post-game video recap segment. We also grew the popularity of The Hustler’s podcast “Live From West End” by bringing in special guests including Skip Bayless, Paul Finebaum, Lee and Lea.

 273.
I also brought a former tradition back, which was implemented by Hershey. The tradition was to write a feature about a member of every Vanderbilt Varsity team. It was aimed at highlighting all of Vanderbilt’s sports teams.

 274.
I also valued providing Vanderbilt with analytical stories at The Hustler like writing my Commodore Brunches after every football game and writing bi-monthly Memorial Minutes articles.

 276.
Thank you to everyone from the Vanderbilt Athletics department for allowing The Hustler unique opportunities to speak with athletes and coaches. A few weeks ago, Mago and I ate lunch with Mark Byington. Byington, the new Men’s Basketball coach, will look to bring back Memorial Magic and has already made several big signings this offseason. Most importantly, he was gracious and is invested in bringing the students closer to Vanderbilt Athletics.

 278.
I’m honored and blessed to have served in this position for the past 12 months. SAAM programming began with a SAAM Kick-Off on April 3 and concluded its final webinar on April 24.

 304.
The 24 events during April centered on the theme “Building Connected Communities,” as set by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. Project Safe, Greek Life and the Student Health Center hosted self-defense training, a panel on sexual health, lantern decorating and other activities during their Block Party on April 3.

 305.
“Like other observance months, SAAM provides an opportunity to raise awareness, support survivors and encourage individual reflection on the ways in which they might be able to positively change culture,” Project Safe Director Cara Tuttle said. “We try to offer a variety of programs and collaborate with many campus partners so that there is something of relevance for everybody.”

 306.
Vanderbilt Student Government hosted Monica Lewinsky, an American activist and writer, to discuss public shaming, healing and anti-bullying advocacy in Langford Auditorium on April 10. The Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention Committee, chaired by junior Ellie Kearns, took the lead in planning this event.

 307.
“I hope our event serves two main populations — survivors of trauma and those who are unintentionally perpetrating harm,” Kearns said. “I hope that survivors feel supported and that those who do not feel comfortable accessing on-campus services feel as though attending our event contributed to their healing journey.”

 308.
Project Safe hosted one of their largest annual programs, The Survivor Speak Out, on April 16 in Alumni Hall. At this event, survivors met with Vanderbilt students and shared their stories of how the violence they experienced impacted their lives. Project Safe and the University Counseling Center were present to provide support as needed.

 309.
“I think it’s easy for us as students to say we care about sexual and relationship violence prevention, but few students truly understand the gravity of the issue,” Kearns said. “Survivors are not just a statistic. We are your friends, your classmates, your neighbors.”

 310.
RSVP committee member and senior Makala Desargent described the events as “informative and enlightening.”

 311.
“I hope that students were able to receive more education and awareness about gender-based violence and especially sexual violence,” Desargent said. “[The events] helped broaden my awareness and perspectives as to how I as a human being should talk about these topics, and I hope students took that away.”

 312.
Tuttle said Project Safe employees are passionate about their work despite the tough topics addressed through their programs.

 313.
“The month gives us increased visibility and engagement, and there are events that amplify survivor voices and hopefully provide a sense of support to the people in our Vanderbilt community who have had or are going through these types of incidents and issues,” Tuttle said.

 335.

It can be said that every person is, in fact, two people: the figure and the human. The figure is what a person is known as to the world. It is their reputation, their legacy and the amalgamation of all the world’s projections onto them. The figure is, for all intents and purposes, a character.

 336.
The problem with unremarkable people is that their status as a figure is truly lacking. The problem with the most remarkable people is that we forget, nestled in the shell of the figure, there too resides a human.

 337.
Every great figure of history was also a human. So, too, are our modern celebrities. In neglecting to perceive this inward facet of the figure, we fail to recognize half of the narrative written into the life of every human being.

 338.
The figure of Amanda Naujokas is well known. Adorned with three rings — two for the 2021 and 2022 Southland Bowling League titles; one for the 2023 NCAA Championship — Naujokas is one of the most successful student-athletes in the history of Vanderbilt Athletics.

 339.
But, who is Naujokas the human?

 340.
“I want to help people,” Naujokas told The Hustler. “That’s why I thought I wanted to be a teacher.”

 341.
In many ways, Naujokas is just like any other Vanderbilt student. The Long Island, N.Y. product began her college journey in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting from being locked down at home with her family to being locked alone in a dorm room 1,000 miles away.

 342.
“I remember coming to school. My mom dropped me off,” Naujokas said. “She gave me cleaning supplies and was like ‘ok, Amanda, make sure you do all this. Don’t get COVID.”

 343.
Like for so many others, the precautions were not enough.

 344.
“It was the first round of asynchronous testing, and I actually came up positive,” Naujokas said. “So, I went into quarantine and basically sent the entire team in. Then, second semester, I was a false positive.”

 345.
There was, at least, one silver lining to the abnormality of the first year. Kept under tight restrictions on gatherings and interactions, Naujokas found herself becoming increasingly acquainted with the only people permitted to be in close proximity: her two fellow teammates in the class of 2024.

 346.
“Jen [Loredo], Caroline [Thesier] and I got super close because we couldn’t really hang out with any of our other teammates,” Naujokas said. “So, a positive from COVID was getting really close with the people in my class and creating some good memories in our room that we couldn’t leave.”

 347.
Three years later, with all three having concluded their collegiate careers, the bond remains just as strong as it did on Commons. Remembered by the world for what they accomplished, the trio will remember each other by what they did to liven up those most boring days of isolation.

 348.
“One of the things to me that [Naujokas] has provided this team is a sense of humor about ourselves,” associate head coach Josie Barnes said. “There are times where we get so ahead of ourselves and so into the moment, and it’s really not that serious. She was able to provide that [sense].”

 349.
That’s not to say that her contributions came in the form of intangibles.

 350.
“Even when it doesn’t look like the conditions are optimal for her, she finds a way to get it done,” Barnes said. “She [always] knew what we needed and how to get it done. She didn’t start [the national championship], but we couldn’t have done what we did without her in that position.”

 351.
Coming off the bench in place of Alyssa Ballard for the third game of the seven-game national championship series, Naujokas hit a strike in her first step up to the lane and remained in the lineup as Vanderbilt went on to complete the first 3-1 comeback in NCAA Bowling Championship history.

 352.
“My proudest moment was last year during the national championship,” Naujokas said. “I was just proud of myself for coming in during the match when we were down and just filling my frames and doing my job to help us win.”

 353.
The moment reflects beautifully on Naujokas the figure, but Naujokas the human will be remembered differently by those around her.

 354.
“The thing that she has learned that I’m most proud of doesn’t even have to do with fundamental bowling things, but really [is] how to advocate for herself,” Barnes said. “Coming into a team that’s really solid top to bottom, you can get lost in the mix if you don’t speak up.”

 355.
At the beginning of her career, Naujokas did find herself temporarily lost amid the mix of all-american talent present on Vanderbilt’s roster. That changed at the Kat Klash in November of 2020, where then-freshman Naujokas finished tied for fourth in the tournament’s individual standings. From then on, the Long Islander remained a staple of the rotation.

 356.
“It took us a long time to realize that we just needed to give her an opportunity to figure it out when it counts,” head coach John Williamson said. “There’s people that look good in practice and there’s people that look good in the game. When the lights would come on, she was always pretty steady.”

 357.
The class of 2024 will always be remembered for the trophies it collected and the wins it tallied, but Naujokas will also be recalled for just how easy she made it for everyone else around her.

 358.
“The thing that Amanda’s been able to do that I find pretty remarkable is she’s extremely consistent,” Williamson said. “Day in and day out you know what you’re going to get and how she’s going to act.”

 359.
Even in the lowest of moments, on and off the lanes, life’s troubles never seemed to bother Naujokas. At least, not enough to affect her performance with a ball in her hand.

 360.
“She doesn’t let situations dictate her emotions,” Williamson said. “She’s been very steady for us as a group. She’s been somebody that we rely on if we need something to happen. Nothing’s too big for her.”

 361.
Among the lowest moments of Naujokas’ collegiate career came in her sophomore year. Stepping up to the lanes on the first day of the 2021 Dezy Strong Classic, hosted at her home center on Long Island, N.Y., Naujokas suffered a groin strain as she went about her throwing motion. Then on, week after week, every throw of the ball brought with it a conscious fear of aggravating the injury, or worse.

 362.
“Even as it was getting better, my mental thought was, ‘Oh my god, every single time you shoot a spare, you’re going to pull your groin again,” Naujokas said. “That was kind of the lowest point, trying to mentally get over that hurdle.”

 363.
Eventually, after enough successful spares were completed without suffering the same fate, Naujoaks regained confidence in her throw and herself. At that point, with the world and the university beginning to open back up, life began to look up for the sophomore.

 364.
“The first thing I remember [after COVID-19] is walking into the classroom without a mask and, I’m like, ‘this is kind of weird,’” Naujokas said. “This is kind of weird, actually seeing everybody’s face, and not seeing everybody either behind a computer screen or sitting in class with a mask on.”

 365.
Strip away the athlete parts of Naujokas’ time in college, and the student part looks remarkably similar to what one might call the typical Vanderbilt experience. In fact, like so many others, she even wound up changing her major.

 366.
“Coming into Vandy, I was an elementary [education] and [human and organizational development] major,” Naujokas said. “Then, two or three semesters in, I was taking a bunch of education classes, and I [was] like, ‘I don’t think education is my calling.”

 367.
Wanting to hold on to HOD, but not wanting to major in it alone, the sophomore Naujokas swapped out elementary education for child studies. The rest is history.

 368.
Between the two majors, Naujokas has found a lot of classes to like and a lot to dislike. Public policy, gender in leadership and organizational change — the list goes on. Like every other HOD major, Naujokas also had to complete a capstone project. Unlike most others, she had to balance it with her responsibilities as an athlete.

 369.
“I did [capstone] with the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development in their business enterprise resource office,” Naujokas said. “I know, it’s a mouthful.”

 370.
Investigating Tennessee’s disaster relief program and finding ways to aid businesses in the wake of destruction, Naujokas found a calling for assisting community enterprises get back on their feet. Perhaps, as her time in college now elapses, that is where she will next find herself.

 371.
Never again will Naujokas bowl for the Black and Gold, but her memory will live on in the program as both an accomplished figure and an admirable human.

 372.
Asked for a piece of advice to future bowlers, or any future Vanderbilt students in general, Naujokas kept it simple — and characteristically optimistic.

 373.
“You can be successful at Vanderbilt,” Naujokas said. “Make sure you use the resources, especially the ones that Athletics gives you, and honestly just enjoy your time. I know everybody says it goes by fast, but the time really does go by fast.”
374.

 375.
The time has fast come for Naujokas, as it shall eventually come for all Vanderbilt students. Despite all the differences between us and Naujokas the figure, there is still much we can learn from Naujokas the human.

 376.
“Just live life to the fullest,” Naujokas said.

 377.
As figure and human, Naujokas’ life has been lived to the fullest indeed. She is, after all, a national champion — and a natural teammate.

The post Human and Champion: Getting to know Amanda Naujokas first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.

 398.

A four-year, one-school player is becoming increasingly rare in today’s NCAA landscape. For Calvin Hewett, it’s been the difference-maker in his college experience.

 399.
The post Calvin Hewett: The antidote to the portal first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.

 400.

Like several other VandyBoys, Calvin Hewett’s journey started in the Northeast. Admittedly, New Hampshire isn’t the easiest place to play baseball with its unforgiving winters and chilly springs, but a support network of friends and family allowed Hewett to pursue his passion.

 401.
“[My parents] put so much time into me — money too — especially in those high school, middle school years. When you’re playing travel ball, you’ve got to go stay in hotels or fly down to Florida, because, you know, you can’t play in January in New Hampshire because there’s snow on the ground,” Hewett said. “There’s so many people [who helped me], but definitely my parents — just a big sacrifice.”

 402.
As a kid, Vanderbilt’s unique jerseys and its 2014 NCAA Championship caught Hewett’s eye, and after some impressive showings at prospect camps, Hewett caught Vanderbilt’s eye. Head coach Tim Corbin is infamous for loving gritty, multi-sport, northeastern products, and the 6’3” Hewett matched that description perfectly.

 403.
Not only was Hewett a multi-sport athlete, he was a multi-sport winner. Hewett led Portsmouth High School to two baseball state titles — out of three chances nonetheless due to COVID-19, and he helped his basketball team win three state championships as well. With a ring for every finger, Hewett made the journey to Nashville in search of more.

 404.
The new Commodore began his career fielding, doing whatever was asked of him as a rookie on the team. He ended the season with a small sample size of play, but an impressive one nonetheless: 15 game appearances, a slash line of .571/.700/.857 on 7 at-bats, a perfect fielding record, a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs.

 405.
“My freshman year, I was definitely nervous because I really had no idea that I was going to play at all, to be honest. I had no expectations,” Hewett said. “I guess it was just about staying ready and doing the best I can to prepare as a non-starter. And it paid off. I didn’t get too many at bats, but when I did, I was ready.”

 406.
The 2021 Vanderbilt squad was special, so earning any playing time as a freshman was an admirable accomplishment. Unfortunately, when the VandyBoys went to Omaha for the College World Series, push came to shove. There were a limited number of spots available on the active roster, hard decisions were made and Hewett had to watch from behind a screen as his team went for ultimate glory.

 407.
For many players, this would have been cause for dismay, frustration or even a portal entrance. Not for Hewett. Not only did the young outfielder take the time to hone his craft, he made sure to support the team however possible. Once given the chance, he made the trip to Omaha himself to be there in person.

 408.
“Once [the team] made it to the finals, I actually called coach Corbin. I was like, ‘Hey, Coach, you know, it’d be really nice if I can come down and watch the boys and support them.’ And so, he let me do that. So, I flew down for the finals,” Hewett said. “That was a great experience because I got to see the atmosphere. So, that gave me a little wake up call as to what I was getting myself into.”

 409.
The opportunity served as motivation for what could be. The CWS is an addiction and Hewett made it his mission to get the squad back to that promised land.

 410.
First, though, he needed to improve his own game. How would he accomplish this? By becoming a jack-of-all-trades. He was already a great fielder, so his offense — especially his baserunning abilities — was his main focus.

 411.
“I had a lot of conversations with Coach Baxter, and we figured that my best offensive skill is just to get on first base and cause havoc for the defense — whether it’s stealing a base, whether it’s taking an extra base when someone gets a hit, things like that,” Hewett said. “I like to define it as trying to cause havoc for the opposing defense as well as the pitcher. Because once I get on first base, no one really wants to deal with me out there.”

 412.
Hewett had no stolen bases his freshman year, but he added 5 his sophomore year, then he tacked on 11 his junior year and he’s already tallied 18 during his senior season. Yet, for as much as he’s stolen, Hewett has only been caught three times. This 91.9% conversion rate is astounding, given Vanderbilt’s average since the 2014 championship season is 78.8% (842-for-1069). This feat is further reinforced by the MLB’s definition of a good conversion ratio: the league states that a good base runner successfully steals at around or above 75%. Clearly, Hewett’s work on the base path paid off.

 413.
This isn’t the only part of the outfielder’s game that was improved. For instance, his strikeout rate has decreased each season in which he’s had significant at-bats. It stood at 25.9% his sophomore year, 24.3% during his junior campaign and, currently, 19.5% for his final year. Indeed, Hewett’s efforts out-of-season have helped him see more of the field in-season.

 414.
As a senior, however, the product on the diamond arguably takes a backseat to the value he adds through his role as a leader on the team.

 415.
“I’m just trying to set an example for [the younger guys]. We have Jack [Bulger] and Alan [Espinal] — they’re great guys. The three of us, we’ve been together, obviously, for four years now. And having Troy [LaNeve] and Sam [Hliboki] back for their fifth year has been really helpful,” Hewett said. “It’s just about making sure that [the freshmen] understand what the standard is for Vanderbilt Baseball, so they can pass that on to the freshmen next year when we’re gone.”

 416.
Humble and quick to recognize his other experienced teammates, Hewett has nearly four years under his belt at Vanderbilt. This type of veteran presence is paramount come postseason play — look no further than when the New Hampshire native showed off his clutch gene in last year’s SEC Championship game. With his only at-bat, in the eighth inning and the bases loaded, Hewett delivered three RBIs on a bases-clearing double. The Commodores would go on to take the SEC crown.

 417.
Hewett’s time on West End can be defined through individual statistics and team accomplishments, but ultimately, it seems more apt to illustrate his impact on the program through the relationships he’s made. Being at a school for four years is becoming increasingly rare, but it’s made all the difference for Hewett.

 418.
“My time here has been absolutely fantastic. The relationships I’ve made,” Hewett said. “I would never be able to get those anywhere else.”

 419.
The right coach and the right teammates produced the perfect storm for the senior. His loyalty to his friends is exemplary and his commitment to the VandyBoys is exceptional. Though his future is yet to be determined, he’ll leave Vanderbilt with a strong culture and satisfaction that he did things the right way.

 420.
“Coach Corbin has established such a great culture here. There’s no egos, I mean, [players] may come in on day one with egos, but when you walk out on the last day, everyone’s on the same level. And everyone loves each other.” Hewett said. “I couldn’t be happier with my time here.”

The post Calvin Hewett: The antidote to the portal first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.

 475.

Following a heartbreaking loss to Mississippi State on Sunday, the Vanderbilt Commodores (32-13) got back in the win column when they defeated Tennessee Tech 8-7 on Tuesday evening.

 476.
“We didn’t pitch particularly well from the start to deep into the ballgame,” head coach Tim Corbin said.

 477.
JD Thompson started the evening by delivering two consecutive strikeouts. The sophomore allowed both a double and a single, putting Tennessee Tech on the board first. Thompson would pitch one more inning, which ended in no damage. Sam Hliboki substituted the sophomore before the third inning. Thompson threw 25 strikes and 5 strikeouts on 36 total pitches.

 478.
Thompson cleaned up the Golden Eagles in both the third and fourth innings. Thompson faced Theo Bryant IV with the bases loaded and two outs. Thompson relieved Vanderbilt fans at Hawkins Field when he forced Bryant IV to fly out.

 479.
Going into the fourth inning, Vanderbilt had only connected on two hits. The fourth quarter was poised to be different though, especially after Troy LaNeve reached first base off of a Tennessee Tech error. Unfortunately for Vanderbilt, Matthew Polk hit a line drive to the Tennesee Tech shortstop, who catapulted a double play to retire the inning.

 480.
After Thompson pitched two innings, his clean night concluded when Ryan Ginther came in.

 481.
Ginther, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., struggled to find his footing in the fifth inning. The lefty walked his first batter faced. Ginther then allowed a single, which put runners on first and second base with no outs. Tanner Shiver then sacrifice bunted, which put the Golden Eagles in scoring position. Ginther then struck out his next batter faced.

 482.
Ginther’s next batter he would face was Mack Whitcomb, a freshman from Mokena, Ill. With an 0-2 count, Whitcomb silenced the Commodore faithful when he hit a 3-run homer to put Tennesee Tech up 4-0. The bleeding stopped soon after when Ginther forced his next batter to ground out.

 483.
The Vanderbilt offense woke up in the fifth inning. With a full count and two outs, Davis Diaz was eager to get the Commodores on the scoreboard. Diaz delivered, nothing a line drive to the shortstop. The shortstop was unable to reach first base as Braden Holcomb came home from third base. RJ Austin was then walked and Vanderbilt had the bases filled. Alan Espinal was unable to build off of the momentum in Hawkins Field when he hit a fly out to center field.

 484.
The sixth inning would feature Vanderbilt pitcher David Horn Jr. In the inning, Horn Jr. hit two batters and walked one batter. With the bases loaded and two outs, Horn Jr. was unable to prevent more damage. Shiver doubled to right field, which brought two runners home for Tennesee Tech.

 485.
Horn Jr. then walked his third batter for the night. His night concluded as Corbin substituted Luke Guth into the game. Guth quickly concluded the inning, thanks to forcing a fly out. Vanderbilt trailed 6-1. Tennessee Tech would deliver a 1-2-3 period in the bottom of the sixth inning.

 486.
After walking one batter, Guth took care of his next three batters faced.

 487.
After the seventh inning stretch, the Vanderbilt offense came alive. Bulger scored an RBI single and RJ Austin hit a 3-run homer. A few moments later, the Commodores had runners on all bases with one out down.

 488.
Then, a few moments later, the Commodores had a prime opportunity to earn their first lead of the night when the bases were loaded with one out. Trailing Tennesee Tech 6-5, Colin Barczi reached on a fielder’s choice which allowed Espinal to score. Then, the shortstop overthrew the first basemen, and LaNeve came home from third base. Vanderbilt took its 7-6 lead into the eighth inning.

 489.

#VandyBoys take over the lead pic.twitter.com/xYJWaN97cx
— Vanderbilt Baseball (@VandyBoys) May 1, 2024

 490.
In the top of the eighth inning, Greyson Carter executed a near-flawless inning. He allowed just one single.

 491.
The Commodore offense was unable to build off its six-run seventh inning with any runs in the penultimate inning.

 492.
Carter easily handled his first two batters. With two outs, Whitcomb silenced Hawkins Field when he converted on a solo shot to send the game to extra innings.

 493.
Both Vanderbilt and Tennesee Tech went scoreless in the 10th inning.

 494.
Carter allowed no hits in the top of the 11th.

 495.
With Jack Bulger on third base, Jonathan Vastine on second base and Davis Diaz on first base, RJ Austin was poised to deliver Vanderbilt with a victory. With a 3-2 count and no outs, Austin was hit by the pitcher. The walk brought home Bulger, which ended the game.

 496.
“I’ve never been hit by a pitch to be walked off,” Austin said.

 497.
The VandyBoys will next play the No. 19 Georgia Bulldogs at 5 p.m. CDT on Friday.

The post VandyBoys avoid upset, defeat Tennessee Tech 8-7 in extra innings first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.
