Lynchburg Area Counselors AssociationCounseling Compact – What You Need to KnowPresented By: Greg Searls, Executive Director of the Counseling Compact Commission(This event does not qualify for CE Hours) Session Description:The Counseling Compact is a groundbreaking initiative that enables Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) to practice in member states by obtaining a privilege to practice. This discussion provides an in-depth exploration of the Counseling Compact, including its purpose and operation. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of eligibility requirements for LPCs seeking Compact privileges, the step-by-step application process for the Counseling Compact, when and how Compact privileges will be issued, and ethical considerations counselors should evaluate before applying, such as jurisdictional responsibilities, client confidentiality across state lines, and adherence to state-specific regulations. Learning Objectives:<ul style="list-style-type: disc;"><li>Describe the requirements to participate in the compact and how to apply for privileges.</li><li>Identify which states are members of the Counseling Compact.</li><li>Explain ethical considerations for practicing across state lines under the privilege to practice.</li></ul> Registration Fee:$0 VCA members $10 non VCA members Schedule: 11:30 am – 1:00 pm: Presentation with Q&A led by Greg along with a slide with bullet points from the Virginia Board of Counseling giving Virginia specific information and where to get updates within our state. Presenter Bio:Greg Searls is the Executive Director of the Counseling Compact Commission. He is a licensed funeral service practitioner in Wyoming, beginning his regulatory career in 2010 when appointed by the Governor to the Board of Funeral Service Practitioners. In 2016, he transitioned to an Executive Director role within the Wyoming Professional Licensing Board office. Throughout his tenure, Greg has served as the Executive Director for various boards, including the Mental Health Professions Licensing Board, Board of Registration in Podiatry, Board of Midwifery, Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Board of Hearing Aid Specialists, Board of Athletic Trainers, and Board of Occupational Therapy. During his leadership, Wyoming enacted statutes to join the ASLP-IC, Occupational Therapy Compact, and Counseling Compact. He initially served as the ex-officio representative to the Counseling Compact Commission for AASCB until Wyoming joined the compact, at which point he was appointed commissioner. Greg holds a bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science and a certificate in Gerontology from Gannon University, as well as an Associate’s Degree in Specialized Funeral Service Technology from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He co-authored the article "Counseling and the Interstate Compact: Navigating Ethical Practice Across State Lines," published in The Professional Counselor in the fall of 2023. Ambrose Fanning, Psy.D., LPC, RN is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, and Registered Nurse. She holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Regent University. Dr. Fanning currently serves with the Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Team as the Director of the Mentorship and Assessment program. The Early Assessment and Mentorship program offers a unique support structure to medical residents. Dr. Fanning serves as the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Graduate Medical Education Office where she spearheads DEI Initiatives in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Office of Health Equity. In her continued pursuit of scholarship, Dr. Fanning has a special interest in health disparities, religious coping, and the generational effects of trauma. Dr. Fanning is an active advocate for the Virginia Counselors Association (VCA) and serves on the Executive Committee as the first African American female President (2022-2023) providing strategic leadership and oversight for over 1400 Virginia counselors in a variety of work settings.  Ularisi Green-Baker, Ph.D., is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia, an approved supervisor through the Virginia Board of Counseling, and a counselor educator. She received her Doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University, Master’s from Regent University in Community Counseling, and Bachelor’s in Psychology from Norfolk State University. Dr. Green-Baker has over 10 years of clinical experience providing psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. She specializes in treatment related to anxiety, depression, women's wellness, and workplace, college and career concerns. In the corporate world, she has been in executive leadership for Employee Assistance Programs providing work-life wellness for employers, employees, and to military Service Members and their families. Being a counselor educator, she has taught Master’s level clinical mental health counseling at CACREP accredited private, for-profit and public graduate schools. Dr. Green-Baker is passionate about working within her local community where she serves with non-profit organizations, churches, and public and private schools. She most loves being outdoors exploring and enjoying this wonderful life with her husband and 4 sons! Cory Gerwe, Ph.D., LPC completed his Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Old Dominion University and is a licensed professional counselor. Dr. Gerwe is the Director of the GME Leadership, Coaching, and Wellness program at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). In this capacity, he oversees various initiatives, including well-being and leadership coaching for residents and fellows, Breaking Bad News Training, Chief Resident Training, Resident and Fellow Association (RAFA), Support U Training, LGBTQ+ training, and the administration of the Well-being Index. Furthermore, he is the GME liaison for the OB/GYN, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Podiatry, and Psychiatry programs, providing guidance and support. Dr. Cory Gerwe' s dynamic achievements and contributions exemplify his commitment to enhancing well-being and leadership in graduate medical education. Notably, he holds leadership positions such as past president and clinical representative of the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (VACES) and Chapter Council Chair for the Virginia Counseling Association. He has also contributed extensively to the field through peer-reviewed publications, newsletters, book chapters, educational materials, and over 40 presentations at local, regional, and national levels. Previously, he held the position of clinical director at the Norfolk LGBT Life Center, where he spearheaded the development and supervision of various programs, including individual and group counseling, medical outpatient services, intimate partner violence support, and community outreach focused on mental health. As a highly accomplished professional, Dr. Gerwe holds certifications as a National Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), Certified Life Coach, and Certified Executive Coach. Crista Glover, Ph.D., LPC is and always will be a Carolina girl at heart but has happily made her home in Coastal Virginia since 2004. This Greensboro native received her B.A. in Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill before moving to Virginia Beach to study counseling at Regent University. She graduated with an M.A. in Counseling and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision. She is also a licensed professional counselor and has been practicing full-time since 2007. Glover’s clinical and research interests include mind/body medicine, somatic and expressive therapies, and using mindfulness and movement to promote mental health. Recipients of the sponsorship will receive a one year VCA membership, including membership to one division and one chapter of choice. Recipients will also be able to attend and participate in the 2025 VCA Leadership Academy, which is hosted by VCA Executive Committee board leaders. The VCA Leadership Academy offers educational sessions, interactive activities, and service planning as well as an opportunity for attendees to learn about other leadership opportunities within VCA and become involved in service or advocacy projects. The VCA Leadership Academy will take place at South University Richmond on September 26 (12:00 pm – 5:00 pm) & September 27 (9:00 am – 4:00 pm).  Awardees will also receive free double occupancy lodging on Friday, September 26, 2025 at Aloft. The three-day webinar training will provide LPCs and LMFTs the 20 hours required to supervise LPC residents.  Participants attending the workshop in its entirety will receive a Verification Form documenting *20 NBCC Contact Hours (includes 3 hours ethics), fulfilling the Virginia LPC supervision requirements.
*The 20 NBCC Contact Hours may also be used for re-licensure - Virginia Board of Counseling

;"> is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, and Registered Nurse. She holds a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from the Regent University. Dr. Fanning currently serves with the Eastern Virginia Medical School’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Team as the Director of the Mentorship and Assessment program. The Early Assessment and Mentorship program offers a unique support structure to medical residents. Dr. Fanning serves as the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Graduate Medical Education Office where she spearheads DEI Initiatives in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Office of Health Equity. ;">Dr. Fanning is an active advocate for the Virginia Counselors Association (VCA) and serves on the Executive Committee as the first African American female President (2022-2023) providing strategic leadership and oversight for over 1400 Virginia counselors in a variety of work settings.Dr. Ularisi Green-Baker has been working in behavioral health for 10 years. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in VA and is the owner of Live to Never Regret Counseling and Consultation, PLLC. She is also an Employee Assistance Program Specialist (EAP) at Reach EAP providing work-life wellness for employers and employees via remote and face-to-face platforms. Dr. Green-Baker offers tele-mental health services and assessments to individuals, couples and families in the community. For over 10 years, Dr. Green-Baker has taught Master’s level clinical mental health counseling at private, for-profit and public graduate schools. She also taught student development courses on the community college level. Dr. Green-Baker received her doctorate in Counseling Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University, her master’s from Regent University in Community Counseling, and her bachelor’s in Psychology from Norfolk State University. She is a member of New Beginnings Outreach, Inc. and been a part of national and international evangelist ministries for over 20 years.

The Virginia Counselors Association is proud to announce our annual Leadership Academy.  It is designed to be a foundational training experience for emerging 2025-2026 VCA leaders.

Ø  Each VCA Chapter & Division are encouraged to send two members from their 2025-26 Executive Board ($50.00 fee per person)
