42.
Today we are going to talk about Grafts. One of the biggest causes of confusion in the hair transplant world and something every patient should understand if you want to know what you are getting for your money. For example, if clinic A and clinic B both tell you that they are going to give you 2,000 grafts for a different price, should you just choose the cheaper price? You may be surprised to know that 2,000 grafts at clinic A, could be twice the amount of hair as 2,000 grafts at clinic B!

 43.
 44.
 45.
 46.
First, let’s begin with the definition of a graft. A graft is merely a term used in medicine to describe a piece of living tissue that is removed from the body. Grafts are then placed in another part of the body. For example, during breast reconstruction, fat grafts are taken from the body and used to hide the effects of breast cancer. When someone has a burn on their leg, a surgeon may take 1 graft of tissue from the other leg and use it to repair the burn. In hair transplantation, a graft simply means a piece of tissue extracted from the back of the scalp. It does not denote the number of hairs in the graft or even if the graft contains hairs at all. It is very common in procedures performed by robots for example, that many of the grafts extracted do not contain any hairs at all.

 47.
 48.
 49.
 50.
Types of Hair Grafts

 51.
 52.
 53.
 54.
Take a look at the photo below provided by one of our generous patients during his hair transplant surgery.

 55.
 56.
 57.
 58.

 59.
 60.
 61.
 62.
Notice a difference between graft #1 and graft #5 for example? Graft #1 has a single root, spawning a single hair. Graft #5 has 8 roots, spawning 8 hairs. If we transplant 1,000 grafts like the first, you get 1,000 hairs. If we transplant 1,000 grafts like the 5th, you get 8,000 hairs, a whopping difference.

 63.
 64.
 65.
 66.
What if I told you that it takes 5 times longer to extract graft #5 than it does to extract graft #1, or that it takes significantly more surgical skill to extract graft #5 without damaging any of the roots. For this reason, 90% of clinics will only extract 1 and 2 haired grafts (especially if they charge per graft). So if you pay for 2,000 grafts, you will likely end up with anywhere between 2,000 to 4,000 hairs.

 67.
 68.
 69.
 70.
Now, we are not saying that we only extract grafts with 8 hairs, in fact, most patients have very few follicles with this many hairs in them. Most have follicles that range from 1 to 5 hairs, with an average of 3 hairs per follicle. At our clinic, we begin by extracting the follicles with multiple hairs and slowly work our way down to the ones and twos. This is what allows us to give patients anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 hairs during a 2,000 graft hair transplant. It’s good to get some of those single haired grafts because they are used to make a more natural hairline.

 71.
 72.
 73.
 74.
Conclusion

 75.
 76.
 77.
 78.
The point of this article is to educate you, the patient, on what grafts really mean and how they can be used to lure you by some clinics. Many clinics will offer more grafts for the same price as a competitor but in reality, they will merely take smaller grafts and end up giving you fewer hairs. At Venus Hair Restoration, we do things very differently. We do not charge per graft, but rather we focus on getting as many hairs as possible. Because we focus on extracting larger grafts our procedures are often more lengthy than other clinics, for example, a 2,000 graft procedure can take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours to complete. But, at the end of the day, our results speak for themselves and we will spend as many hours as we need, to provide you with a lifetime of results.

 96.
Preparing for your hair transplant in the weeks prior to surgery and what to do the morning of your hair transplant to maximize results.

 97.

Hair Transplantation is not a risky procedure to undergo, despite this, every treatment and every medical procedure has instructions on what you should do and what you should avoid in the days prior to your surgery. At Venus, our goal is that you are not only satisfied with the results of your hair transplant surgery but thrilled. In order to do this, we want to provide you with all the necessary resources to feel confident and prepared for your treatment including an online guide like this.

 98.
Two weeks prior to your hair transplant surgery

 99.
You should begin preparing for your hair transplant surgery 2 weeks prior to your scheduled procedure date. By now you should have scheduled at least 3 days off work, preferably a week, so you can take it easy after the surgery.

 100.
When preparing for your surgery, do not cut your hair. The doctor would like to see your hair again on the day of surgery and trim your hair at the beginning of the procedure.

 101.
If you are taking any blood thinners such as Plavix, Coumadin, and Heparin, please notify us, as these medications can interfere with your healing and the doctor will have to advise you accordingly. If you take beta-blockers such as Propranolol, please notify us at this time as you may have to be switched to a select beta-blocker temporarily, which will not interfere with your results.

 102.
One week prior to your hair transplant

 103.
When you are one week out from your procedure, stop consumption of any B or E vitamins. These vitamins may be present in multivitamin supplements and should be avoided as they may increase bleeding. You can resume taking your vitamins 3 days after your hair transplant is complete.

 104.
Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as Aspirin and Ibuprofen throughout the week before your surgery. You can also resume taking your anti-inflammatory medications 3 days after your Michigan hair transplant. As for medications such as those for blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart health, you should continue to take them as prescribed even on the day of your surgery.

 105.
You should stop smoking cigarettes as soon as possible. Smoking causes a constriction of the blood vessels which will decrease the flow of blood and nutrients to the scalp. In addition, smoking increases carbon monoxide levels in the blood which lowers the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood cells. These effects will negatively affect wound healing after your surgery and can increase your chances of scarring from follicular unit extraction. We recommend you stop smoking at least one week prior and continue to do so for at least two weeks after.

 106.
Three days before your hair transplant

 107.
Three days before your hair restoration procedure, you should discontinue alcohol consumption as this can negatively affect your healing. For those who routinely dye their hair to hide graying, please do not dye your hair within the three days prior to your procedure. Stress is the most damaging agent on the body and therefore, it is important that you try to minimize stress as much as possible in the days leading up to your procedure.

 108.
The big day; the morning of your treatment

 109.
The morning of your treatment is very important for ensuring a positive experience. It is important that you don’t do any chores or hard work in the morning as you want to be as relaxed as possible in preparation for your treatment.

 110.
Take a shower in the morning and gently wash your hair. Dry your hair after the shower and do not apply any hair spray, gel, or other hair styling product. You want nothing in your hair when you arrive at our hair transplant Michigan center.

 111.
Please do not wear too much cologne or perfume on the day of your surgery. Do not bring any valuables to center on the day of your surgery, including laptops or Ipads.

 112.
Wear loose and comfortable clothing on the day of your procedure. During the surgery you will remove your shirt and wear a surgical gown. Since you will wrap your head afer surgery, don’t wear a shirt that will require you to pull it tightly over your head to put it on afterwards. Tank tops are great or zipper/button clothes as they can be put on without touching the head. This will prevent any rubbing or dislodging of the bandages and grafts in your scalp after your procedure is complete.

 113.
The final and most important thing that you should do the morning of your surgery is to have a full and healthy breakfast. Consume a breakfast that is full of protein and healthy carbohydrates and fats.

 126.
In this article, we cover three common misconceptions and marketing tactics that are commonly used to persuade hair transplant patients.

 127.

As Michigan’s leader in surgical hair restoration, we often get patients who have heard myths and rumors about the treatment. Some of these myths, concerns, and rumors we hear from patients are a result of deceptive advertising while others simply arise from a lack of industry knowledge and common marketing methods.

 128.
Today, we want to clear up common rumors and misconceptions about hair restoration surgery so our patients can make informed and unbiased decisions about their health. If you have any questions that are not covered in this article, give us a call at (248)-254-7882.

 129.
Myth #1: Hair restoration is ridiculously expensive in the US

 130.
Many patients are under the impression that hair transplant surgery costs anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000 in the United States and this is FALSE. This myth has so much influence in the states that patients risk their health and travel to countries like Canada, Mexico, and Turkey in order to have the surgery. While it is true that these countries offer hair transplants for a lower price than clinics in the United States, the difference is not as dramatic as one might think.

 131.
Hair transplantation has come a long way in the United States and as a result, prices have become very reasonable. Although many clinics in the US still charge five figures, our average patient spends $7,000 for a hair transplant, right here in Michigan! According to a recent survey, the average price for a hair transplant procedure in Canada is about $5,800. Patients who choose to save $1,200 by going to Canada for a procedure are losing certain benefits in exchange for a lower price. This goes for any surgery outside of the US.

 132.
Medical procedures have a higher price tag in the United States because healthcare providers must comply with stricter regulations in regards to patient safety, medical equipment sterilization, and physician training. All of these factors drive up the costs of a hair transplant in Michigan. It is for this reason that complications, infections, and overall patient dissatisfaction is higher in other countries for most cosmetic procedures, including hair restoration.

 133.
In addition, hair transplants in other countries like Mexico and Turkey are rarely overseen by a medical doctor, which is why they are charging $1,000-2,000. Going to another country and working with a reputable doctor there will cost a similar price to the USA when you factor in airline travel, hotel, food, etc.

 134.
Myth #2: NeoGraft & ARTAS are superior to traditional FUE

 135.
Many patients are under the impression that machines and robots produce better results and have more benefits than traditional FUE. The truth is that these technologies provide many benefits for the healthcare provider and little to no benefit for the patient. If these systems truly produced better results, we would be using them here at Venus. The truth is that your results depend purely on the skill and experience of your surgeon and his or her team of technicians.

 136.
The majority of clinics who invest in such machines do so for two reasons (in our experience). The first is that they increase efficiency, allowing clinics to treat more patients in less time (not always a good thing). The second is that they allow physicians who have little to no training in hair transplantation to take part in the lucrative market that is growing in the US.

 137.
The way that these hair restoration companies market their technology and convince patients into thinking they are the best choice, is by comparing their automated FUE systems to traditional FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) which is also known as strip harvesting. Strip harvesting is a technique that consisted of taking a strip of tissue from the back of a patient’s scalp and transplanting the follicles to the crown and hairline.

 138.
Features that are typically boasted about automated systems include little to no pain, no linear scar, little to no risk of complications, quicker recovery time, and more natural-looking results. If one were to do their research, they would notice that these are in fact the benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE and none of them are exclusive to automated systems such as ARTAS, SmartGraft, or NeoGraft.

 139.
Experienced and specialized hair transplant surgeons often prefer manual follicular unit extraction. Although it takes more time to perform, it allows the surgeon to carefully choose each donor follicle, expertly handle hair grafts, and create a more customized hairline for the patient. All of these things typically result in greater satisfaction for the patient and the ability to restore difficult areas such as eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards, all at a lower price (fancy robots are expensive). With that in mind, such devices in the hands of a skilled hair surgeon will yield great results, but they will barely differ from the results that such a surgeon could produce manually.

 140.
Myth #3: It can take 2-3 years to see results from hair restoration

 141.
Experienced hair transplant specialists know that this excuse is merely a way for clinics to get patients to stop bothering them about their poor quality work and keep waiting in the hopes that they will get what they paid for. If you had a hair transplant over a year ago and you are still not seeing any results, then, unfortunately, your procedure was not done properly.

 142.
This is not a rare scenario for patients who had a procedure overseas. I mean let’s be honest, are you going to file a lawsuit against a clinic in Europe or the Middle East because your hair never grew in? No, you won’t, in fact, you can’t even leave a 1-star review on Yelp. These clinics know that, and that’s why they operate in these countries. But if a doctor in your city gives you poor results, you are very likely to promote a negative reputation about them, and in extreme cases, even take legal action. This is why we encourage you to go somewhere close to home.

 143.
When done correctly, your new hairs will begin to shed about 4 to 5 weeks after your surgery. Within 2 months you should begin to see steady growth from a majority of your hairs. About 9 months after the procedure, at least 80% of your implanted hair follicles should be steadily growing and you should see a dramatic increase in your hairline. Within a year, all your hair should be long, healthy, and vibrant.

 144.
Real Data: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2956960/

 145.
Final thoughts

 146.
Now that you are accurately educated on some of the most common misconceptions regarding hair restoration in Michigan, we hope that you will be able to make the right decision with your hair. 165.
After your hair transplant procedure is complete, you will be going home with gauze wrap around your head, covered by a protective cap (so it will not be visible). This gauze wrap will remain around your head until it is removed during your post-operative exam, the next day. After that, no wraps or bandages are needed.

 166.
When you go home, try to spend as much time as possible laying down. The more you stand up and walk around, the more likely you are to have some swelling. Have a full and healthy dinner. After dinner, take your antibiotic and painkiller provided. You are also free to take another painkiller at night if you experience discomfort. Most patients typically do not require any painkillers after the first day but you should continue to take your antibiotics twice a day, for 5 days.

 167.
It is important that you mind your head at all times tonight. You want to avoid bumping your head into anything by mistake and dislodging grafts as a result. You also want to avoid putting any pressure on your scalp or rubbing it in any way, including on a pillow.

 168.
During the first few nights after your hair transplant, sleep with your head slightly elevated. Please ensure that the top and front of your scalp does not come into contact with your pillow or headboard as you sleep.

 169.
Days 1-3 after your hair transplant procedure

 170.
The day after your procedure, you will return to have your gauze wrap removed. At this time, the doctor will also ensure that your grafts are healing properly and there are no complications. There should be very minimal pain and discomfort at this time.

 171.
In order to ensure proper recovery over the next 3 days, there are some simple things which you should avoid. First off, do not get your scalp wet at this time. When you take a shower, wash only your body and avoid your hair. Do not smoke or drink alcohol as this will interfere with your healing. In addition, you should avoid direct sunlight as this can also minimize healing and increase scarring.

 172.
You may also be given medications to prevent swelling and inflammation after surgery. Even with the medications, some patients tend to experience slight swelling around the forehead and eyes. This is not a cause for concern and should resolve itself within 72 hours.

 173.
Sleeping with your head elevated will help decrease any swelling. You can wash your head on the 4th day. Use baby shampoo and be very gentle with your scalp. Gently rinse your scalp with warm water and carefully pat it dry with a soft towel. You can repeat this process daily as it will help to shed any scabbing.

 174.
After a few days have passed, you are free to wear a loose-fitted and breathable hat to protect your scalp from the sun. Avoid strenuous exercise and weight lifting during this period as well and make sure to eat a balanced and healthy diet that supports healing. You should also refrain from swimming pools as the chlorine is harmful to the sensitive grafts.

 175.
Weeks 1-3 weeks after your hair transplant procedure

 176.
After the 10th day, you can begin to wash your hair regularly and any scabbing should fall away. Your scalp may feel a bit itchy at this time but please avoid scratching it. Coldwater can help alleviate any itching safely.

 177.
In the 3 weeks following your hair transplant, you should continue to take it easy and avoid heavy exercise such as sprinting or weightlifting but walking and jogging are not an issue. Try to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as much as possible to maximize healing.

 178.
You should continue to avoid exposing your scalp to strong sunlight and chlorinated water for 2-3 weeks after your surgery. You should not use styling products in the first week either, as the chemicals they contain may harm your grafts. None of these activities will destroy your new hairs but they will contribute to sub-optimal healing and certainly affect your results.

 179.
After the first 10 days have passed, you can begin to resume your normal hair care routine. Avoid harsh shampoos such as dandruff shampoos which can dry out your hair follicles. To ensure proper healing, your grafts must be nurtured and nourished constantly. Assuming you follow your aftercare directions properly, the fact that you had a hair transplant should be unnoticeable after 10-14 days.

 180.
What results should I expect after my hair transplant?

 181.
After your hair transplant Michigan, it may take anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks for your hair follicles to begin growing noticeably. You may notice some newly transplanted hairs falling out at this time. Do not panic, this is completely natural, as the hairs may fall out but the follicles will remain intact. After the hairs have fallen, the follicles that were transplanted will begin to produce healthy and strong hairs just like the ones on the back and sides of your scalp.

 182.
If you regularly dye your hair to hide graying, you can continue to do so after 30 days. After 6 months your hair should be long enough to comb back and in most patients, fully grown within 8 months. It shouldn’t take longer than 12 months to see definite results as most patients will have a full head of hair in 8-9 months. In the coming months, it is important that you maintain proper hair health in order to maximize your results. Simple things such as including omega-3’s and biotin supplements in your diet can help make a difference in your hair health and maximize your results.

 183.
If you have any concerns about your results, do not hesitate to contact us at any time. We are here to help you maximize your results and ensure that you feel confident and happy with your treatment.

 195.
The receding hairline is very common in men and is typically caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

 196.

As we age, the hairline recedes naturally. In men, this usually happens between 20 and 35 years old. Once your hair reaches its “mature hairline”, the speed at which your hair thins and recedes begins to slow down.

 197.
It is very difficult to stop a hairline recession once it has started, however, there are some therapies, natural treatments, and drugs that can help you maintain healthy hair from the start. Hair loss is usually caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

 198.
What causes a receding hairline?

 199.
There are several factors that can cause hair loss and trigger receding hairlines. They are listed below:

 200.
Genetic predisposition – Genetic inheritance is the most frequent cause of a receding hairline in men. If you have a family history of hair loss and a receding hairline, you are more likely to experience these hair changes in adulthood. It is very difficult to prevent genetic hair loss unless you begin to properly care for your hair at a young age. The majority of our hair transplant Michigan patients typically have a family history of hair loss.

 201.
Hormone imbalance – Hormonal imbalance is another important factor to consider. The various hormonal changes that result in the body from stress, dietary problems or medications can cause the hairline to recede. Stress is one of the most powerful triggers of hormone imbalance. We go deeper into stress below.

 202.
Medications – Medications used to treat cancer, blood pressure, heart disease, gout, and depression can cause hair loss in men. One of the main side effects of chemotherapy is hair loss, which can continue even after treatment. Make sure to ask your doctor if there are alternatives to your medication which do not cause hair loss.

 203.
Insufficient nutrition – When the body does not receive the required vitamins and nutrients, it begins to present symptoms to warn us that something is wrong. Hair loss is one of those symptoms. For your hair to grow properly, you should be consuming a healthy diet full of vitamins, nutrients, and omega-3 fatty acids.

 204.
Stress – Whether emotional or physical, stress is one of the main causes of hair loss in men. Stress can trigger genetic hair loss to begin earlier and even trigger hair loss in those with no history of it. It is important that men incorporate common wellness practices into their lives in order to reduce stress. Common wellness practices to reduce stress include regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and healthy eating.

 205.
Treating a receding hairline at home

 206.
Massage your scalp – Massaging your scalp increases blood flow and invigorates hair follicles. A few minutes of hair massages not only activates the cells that promote hair growth but also reduces stress.

 207.
Castor oil works perfectly as a massage oil. This oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal to apply on the scalp. It is also rich in antioxidants and balances hair pH levels.

 208.
Follow a healthy diet – In many cases, hair loss is due to nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, be sure to include a good mix of vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth in your diet.

 209.
Iron sources, such as beans, lentils, leafy greens, pumpkin, and whole grains can help stimulate hair growth by increasing hemoglobin levels in the blood. Multiple studies have shown that iron levels affect hair growth. Increase your intake of amino acids as well, since they produce keratin. Keratin is essential for hair growth, and the red blood cells that supply nutrients to the hair follicles.

 210.
Avoid junk food and refined food. Choose foods grown naturally and eat them minimally cooked. Increase your omega-3 intake as well. Omega-3 fatty acids stimulate hair growth, fight free radicals and reduce inflammation of the scalp.

 211.
Medical treatment of a receding hairline

 212.
Hormone replacement – Hormone replacement therapy involves increasing the levels of estrogen and progesterone through supplements that are taken orally or applied as a cream, gel or patch. Hormone replacement therapy can help prevent hair loss when used in the very early stages of hair loss.

 213.
Medications – Minoxidil and Finasteride are two medications that help hair grow. The application of Minoxidil on the scalp increases blood flow and revitalizes the hair follicles, resulting in hair growth. Intake of Finasteride prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which causes hair loss. Keep in mind that Finasteride should only be used by men to treat male baldness.

 214.
Here at Venus Hair Restoration, we use FUE hair transplantation to restore hair. All of the aforementioned techniques for preventing hair loss are great but they are not much more than that, preventative. A hair transplant is currently the only way to restore hair that has been lost, quickly, safely, and permanently. You can learn more about hair transplant surgery here on our website or by coming in for a free consultation. We are Michigan’s hair transplant specialists.
