45.

Should you go to this space farm, far, far away?

 46.
Do you have what it takes to build the biggest space farm in the galaxy? Help the alien reach this goal in this classic Sokoban puzzle style game! Push cows, sheep, pigs and chicken so that the correct UFO beams can abduct them. (Also, as a side-quest, collect all the hats you can!)

 47.

 48.
I’ve come across many puzzles in my years gaming, quite a few of them that look like this but I had no idea there was an actual term for it known as Sokoban. This one has you push far animals across short areas to their rightful UFOs in a number of tricky layouts. It starts out easy enough, but gets progressively harder with new elements coming into play such as switches that make blocks appear.

 49.

 50.
It’s a pretty simple game otherwise, but for £3.99 you do get 100 levels for your cash, which is a decent amount overall.

 51.
The game has a charming art style with decent visuals for a game like this. It also has a cute soundtrack to boot. The framerate is solid, load times are non-existent and I didn’t come across any bugs during my time.

 52.
The Verdict

 53.
Sokobalien is a simple enough Sokoban puzzle game with charming visuals and a decent soundtrack. It comes with 100 levels which isn’t bad for the price tag. It won’t reinvent the puzzle genre, but will keep puzzle enthusiasts entertained for a while.

 75.

Is this game colossal or a colossal waste of time?

 76.
Do you dare to face the greatness of the Gladiator’s Arena? We present to you the ultimate action and strategy game: Gladiator’s Arena! Get ready to immerse yourself in an epic world, where you will take on the role of a gladiator warrior destined to defeat wild beasts and ruthless warriors in the majestic Colosseum. Epic challenges await: In Gladiator’s Arena, you will be tested in battles of legendary proportions. Confront fierce beasts and skilled enemies as you fight for your place as the greatest gladiator of all time.

 77.

 78.
Gladiator’s Arena is a top-down arena roguelike, but this variant auto-attacks instead of letting you manually do it. Instead your objective is to get near to enemies and dodge, which is a bit odd, but I got used to it quickly enough. The rest of the game handles like you would expect as you survive waves, pick up new abilities and perks to use and so on.

 79.

 80.
The game costs under £3.99 and feels like the right price for what’s on offer here. It’s no different to other arena roguelikes other than the auto-attacking. That alone isn’t enough to separate it from the pack, so it’s only recommended if are fan of the genre and have played every other one out there.

 81.
The visuals are very basic, but do have an element of charm to them. The music is good enough and the framerate was solid throughout.

 82.
The Verdict

 83.
Gladiator’s Arena is a very basic arena roguelike, but gives you the joy of not actually have to do any fighting, only dodging. It’s not enough to set it apart from the rest of its peers, but can be fun in small doses.

 84.
Score: 5.5

 143.

 144.

Go ahead caller, I’m kitten-ing…

 145.
In Doctor Cat you will one day live in a society of cats! Step into the shoes of Doctor Cat, a renowned psychologist, and take care of cute patient cats by discovering their stories and helping them overcome their traumas. Complete jigsaws based on your patients’ stories to unlock each of their stories. Read stories based on real trauma and reflect on your learnings.

 146.

 147.
Doctor Cat is a compilation of jigsaws that you need to complete, with each opening up new dialogue for the doctor and his patients, which are also cats. The stories themselves are powerful and I applaud the efforts to bring them forward, even in a game like this.

 148.
There are 12 patients in all and each will fill you in more about their issues as you begin to fill the jigsaw, which is a nice touch. There are difficulty options as well as achievements that require you to beat the first level in less than 5 minutes and the second in less than 8 minutes. Other achievements include beating 3 levels on Hard and replaying several levels.

 149.

 150.
The whole experience should take you about an hour or so, which isn’t too bad for a psychological jigsaw collection that costs just over £4. There isn’t much to write about the visuals since the jigsaws are still images, but the artwork itself is cute.

 151.
The Verdict

 152.
Doctor Cat will only take you an hour or so to do. It’s a decent collection of jigsaws with interesting stories that make this worth the price.

 153.
Score: 6.0

 179.
I have to admit, I never knew there were games based on Felix the Cat. I actually didn’t know all that much about the character, but I thought it was good to see Konami acknowledge their past library and bring it to a new generation with both the NES and Game Boy versions.

 180.
The game handles like a typical 2D platformer with Felix using his bag of tricks to attack enemies in his path, reaching the exit at the end of each stage. Unlike in Mario, Felix cannot jump on enemies to kill them, so you’ll need to be extra cautious throughout your playthrough. The good news is that Felix will get other weapons/abilities to use on foes, even if for a short distance and on top of that, there’s a rewind feature for you to undo your mistakes.

 181.

 182.
I was overly impressed with how close the Game Boy version was to it’s NES counterpart. The layout is identical, though the GB version does have some framerate issues that is probably due to it being a full-on emulation of the original GB game as opposed to using the console’s hardware to make it run better.

 183.
In terms of 2D platformers, Felix the Cat is a decent enough one. It’s never going to top the likes of Mario, but it does a formidable job and one that is a lot cheaper than picking up the original versions on eBay. The visuals are a product of their time, but look decent considering what they were made on originally, the music is also classic of the era.

 184.
The Verdict

 185.
Felix the Cat may not be the most innovative or classic 2D platformer, but it does well and provides a decent experience for retro fans. Maybe Konami can now release other classic games like… the Mega Drive version of Tiny Toon Adventures or the N64 version of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon? I can only hope, but it’s still nice to see Konami reviving a piece of their past.

 186.
Score: 7.0

 209.

Should you build these blocks or knock them down?

 210.
A young man has a dream, he wants to become the king. To achieve this dream, there are sort of different paths that this young man needs to walk through. Each puzzle solved is a new path completed and a new piece of this journey is revealed. You can choose your own journey by building your own way in this relaxing and beautiful environment. Enjoy this journey and discover the four possible endings of this adventure. Storyblocks is a storytelling puzzle game. Short and peaceful, you can build your own path choosing the next piece of the story. Discover all tales variations and complete the library of journeys by living those drops of adventures in a medieval environment.

 211.

 212.
Storyblocks is a puzzle game where you place blocks to navigate your character to his destination. You rotate the blocks and place them in the right spot to continue, it isn’t always a simple solution and there are multiple paths to take as there are 4 different endings to accomplish.

 213.
The bad news is that the game feels like it was designed with PC in mind, but not consoles. It definitely feels like it wasn’t optimised properly for a controller layout, but for mouse controls instead. Simple elements like rotating the camera and even moving the blocks can be clunky and cumbersome, which is hardly ideal when it comes to a game that requires it throughout.

 214.

 215.
The game itself won’t take you too long to do, even with the control issues. It would have been a nice and chilled experience if it was properly optimised, but alas it was more stressful than serene. The visuals are simple, but get the job done. The music is pretty good and the framerate seemed stable overall.

 216.
The Verdict

 217.
Storyblocks: The King is a game that really should have stuck to PC. The controller layout just isn’t adapted for the game like it should be and ultimately makes a chilled puzzler more frustrating than it needs to be.

 218.
Score: 5.5

 239.

Can this potion simulator put a spell on you?

 240.
First person Alchemy simulation with RPG elements. Craft, gather ingredients, grind, dry, dilute them to brew cool potions in magical cauldron. Then sell or drink them to boost one of your super power. As an Alchemist you can use them on cheeky NPCs – You decide! Alchemist: The Potion Monger is a mixture of simulation puzzle and RPG game, in which you can leave your lab, venture into the world and change it with your brews! Take the role of apprentice of the alchemical arts, in a world full of anthropomorphic (described or thought of as having a human form or human attributes ~Merriam-Webster) animals! Choose your character race from a wide array of animal types, with their strengths and weaknesses. And begin your alchemical journey!

 241.

 242.
One look at Alchemist: The Potion Monger and you’ll instantly think of Minecraft with it’s first-person view, but it looks cel-shaded as opposed to the blocky visuals of Mojang’s game. Alchemist lets you scavenge for ingredients to make potions, which you can then use to sell to NPCs, use on yourself or your dog companion, or even use them on other characters with hilarious results.

 243.
You can also use them on enemies you will come across. The potions can do all manners of things including making villagers vomit, causing fires or launching your foes into the air and a few other surprises along the way. It’s definitely more of an in-depth game than I first took it for and was pleasantly surprised with what is on offer.

 244.

 245.
The game handles well and while it took me a while to get used to how to select the right potions to brew, it became easier once I got the hang of it. You can customise your hut to suit your needs, but also to be visually pleasing to you. It’s easy enough to do too, which isn’t always the case when it comes to these types of games.

 246.
The visuals are cute, while looking vibrant and maintaining a steady framerate throughout. The audio is also impressive with decent voice-acting and a charming soundtrack to boot. Load times were short and I didn’t come across any glitches throughout my time.

 247.
The Verdict

 248.
I must admit, Alchemist: The Potion Monger took me by surprise. It may take a while to get used to the mechanics, but underneath it is a charming alchemy simulator RPG that is worthy of your attention.

 249.
Score: 8.0

 269.

Is this Mage not-so-mighty?

 270.
Introducing Mighty Mage, the top-down arena shooter rogue-lite where you play as a cute mage on a journey to become a master magician. Armed with up to 5 elemental spells at a time, you’ll take on hordes of enemies and choose from a variety of upgrades and spells to create unique builds. In Mighty Mage, every wave presents a new challenge that you must overcome by choosing an upgrade or skill before taking on the enemies.

 271.

 272.
Mighty Mage is a very short game with an easy Platinum trophy that you will earn in less than an hour. You choose an elemental spell and go through 20 waves of enemies before it ends. You will be able to nab perks and other spells that go with your element along the way, but you should have no problem in overcoming the 20 waves with each element.

 273.
As long as you keep strafing and make use of the teleports that are scattered in the corners of the map, then you will get that Platinum in no time at all. The spells aren’t all that different from each other and there’s no element that seems to be better than another. The perks can vary from getting more health to expanding the range of your attacks, as well as healing if you are getting low on health.

 274.

 275.
The combat itself is simple enough, hold down the right trigger to shoot and the right stick to aim where you want your spells to land. Movement is slow but you can get faster if you choose to pick it up as a perk.

 276.
Visuals and music are basic but get the job done. Framerate doesn’t drop and the loading times are non-existent. I didn’t come across any glitches throughout my playthrough, which was nice.

 277.
The Verdict

 278.
Mighty Mage poses little to no challenge for most, clocking in at under an hour for the Platinum trophy. With nothing to come back to after beating it, there’s no reason to return.

 279.
Score: 5.0

 300.

Can these Withering Rooms reach new Heights?

 301.
Withering Rooms is a 2.5D horror adventure set in a procedurally generated Victorian mansion that changes each night. Sneak through Mostyn House to gather weapons, distractions, magical artifacts, keys, and crafting materials.

 302.

 303.
I wasn’t sure what to make of Withering Rooms when I first played it. It’s a blend of roguelike, horror and puzzle adventure that is put in a 2.5D side-scroller. It feels like a darker, edgier version of Little Nightmares, but it gives you a lot more tools at your disposal as you use items to distract enemies or take them on with weapons while scavenging for other objects.

 304.
The combat itself is sadly, a bit clunky. The good news is that it’s the only weak aspect of the game, as the rest of the elements are delivered well. The horror aspect fits well with the atmosphere of Mostyn House, the roguelike gameplay keeps you on your toes and the puzzles will keep you engaged.

 305.

 306.
The visuals are impressive with its horror design. Character models are well designed and the framerate was consistent throughout. The music matches the atmosphere and I was also impressed with the voice-acting.

 307.
The Verdict

 308.
Withering Rooms does a great job in blending roguelike and horror together with puzzle elements. The combat does let it down somewhat, but not enough for me to try and persuade you not to pick it up. If anything, I highly recommend it despite the clunky combat. Definitely one for horror fans.

 309.
Score: 7.5

 334.

More than just a COD Zombies clone?

 335.
The Quiet Ones are back in this round-based survival shooter and spiritual successor to the award-winning British horror, Maid of Sker! Face hordes of new and familiar enemies, supercharged elites with unique supernatural powers, upgradeable steam-punk weapons, interchangeable spine-chilling masks and mysterious story objectives from writing talent behind Maid of Sker, Battlefield 1 and Total War: Rome II.

 336.

 337.
The original Maid of Sker launched on PS4 back in 2020 and I reviewed it and it’s PS5 upgrade that came out the following year. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, the stealth approach and especially when they later added weapons for specific scenarios. It still remains as impressive as I remember, but there’s a sequel in the works and to tide us over until that happens…a spiritual successor/spin-off has been released…

 338.
Sker Ritual comes with 4 huge maps to explore and the format is similar to what you would expect from Call of Duty Zombies, but with clearer waypoints and objectives to give the players focus on where to go and what to do. Mission objectives can vary from killing enemies in a specific area, looking for symbols to a safe using a lantern and plenty of other surprises. These can get very overwhelming when faced with hordes of enemies descending on you, especially solo…so I would definitely recommend jumping online if you want to succeed.

 339.
That being said, there are actual difficulty modes to choose from here. There’s a story based one that sets the cooldown for rounds to just under a minute, which gives you more than enough time to scavenge new weapons, upgrades or clues to the next objective. As with COD Zombies, you’ll gather cash for kills which can be used to unlock new areas as well as getting new guns and so on.

 340.

 341.
Every few rounds, a boss-type enemy will be summoned which will require a lot of bullets to put down. It isn’t ideal when it can spawn between rounds when you are hoping for a breather to complete some objective, but it does keep you on your toes to not be complacent in thinking you’re guaranteed on at the end of every round. Weapons vary from your typical pistols, assault rifles, shotguns and so on, but there are a few special ones that can shoot lightning rounds to stun your enemies and also power up/destroy certain items.

 342.
A big difference with this and COD Zombies is that you have a never-ending supply of health packs and grenades, but they are on a reset timer so you can’t become too reliant on them. You will also grab perks throughout that vary from being active all the time to being activated by a button prompt.

 343.
You can choose to play the game in a Performance or Fidelity mode, plus you can have an unlocked framerate if you wish. The load times between maps are relatively short and the framerate is mostly solid with only a few drops when there are dozens and dozens of enemies on-screen. The visuals are impressive on the whole and it does retain the look and feel of the original game, even if it’s a Zombies clone.

 344.
The Verdict

 345.
Sker Ritual is a decent COD Zombies clone. It ticks all the right boxes and delivers what you would expect, while adding in more accessibility options like difficulty settings and clearer objectives and waypoints. It may not be a Zombies-killer, but its more impressive than it perhaps will get credit for.

 346.
Score: 8.5

 365.
For years, high-profile musicians have been getting involved in the world of traditional esports. JAY-Z was once a stakeholder of the Brooklyn Nets, while rapper Nelly has also thrown his money at the NBA. More recently, it’s been esports that have been piquing the interest of recording artists. Below, we’ll look at 7 musicians who’ve been enticed by the world of competitive video gaming.

 366.

 367.

 368.
The Weeknd

 369.

 370.
Known to his friends as Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd looked to esports when diversifying his portfolio back in 2019. Eventually, he settled on OverActive Media. Despite being relatively young at the time, the esports organization had already enlisted several teams, including Toronto Defiant and Splyce.

 371.

 372.

 373.
Sean Combs

 374.

 375.
Better known as Puffy Daddy or plain old Diddy, Sean Combs is a heavyweight in R&B and hip-hop circles. He’s also known as a savvy investor. It was PlayVS that caught his eye back in 2018, with Combs and a group of investors that included the likes of Samsung sinking more than $30 million into the company. This innovative esports enterprise aims to entice youngsters into careers in esports through scholarships, competitions, leagues, and more.

 376.

 377.

 378.
Post Malone

 379.

 380.
Rapper Post Malone is yet another musician with an interest in video games. In 2020, it was announced that the rapper had become a co-owner of Envy Gaming, an established esports organization that includes several high-profile teams. While Envy Gaming remains one of the most high-profile esports outfits in the United States, this was far from a money-focused move. In fact, the rapper has been an avid player of video games for many years, with the musician previously using Twitch to livestream his favorite titles.

 381.

 382.

 383.
Steve Aoki

 384.

 385.
American DJ Steve Aoki has been a long-time advocate of Twitch and other streaming services. As well as broadcasting sets from these platforms, he’s also been known to indulge in a little game live streaming from time to time. More recently, he’s expanded his interests to include esports. Unlike other musicians who’ve only invested in organizations, Aoki created one from scratch when he co-founded Rogue.

 386.

 387.
After ReKTGlobal acquired the Rogue roster, the organization has since expanded, with teams for everything from Rocket League to Rainbow Six. Keen to see how your favorite Rogue lineup is doing? Get the lowdown on the latest League of Legends tournament or check out the full Valorant schedule at 1337PRO.com.

 388.

 389.

 390.
Imagine Dragons

 391.

 392.
Steve Aoki wouldn’t be the last musician to see the potential of Rogue. After the organization was picked up by ReKGTGlobal, several more musical artists flocked to throw money at the rising stars of North American esports. Imagine Dragons are one such example, with the band becoming co-owners of the company after investing an undisclosed stake.

 393.

 394.
Jennifer Lopez

 395.

 396.
Jennifer Lopez is one of the most multifaceted singers out there, with an acting career that would many award-winning thespians to shame. Nonetheless, Lopez is always looking for another string to add to her bow, with esports being just one new avenue she was keen to explore. After much deliberation, Lopez singled out North American esports organization NRG as her next investment, taking on an advisory role.

 397.

 398.

 399.
Snoop Dog

 400.

 401.
Nobody loves a reinvention quite like Snoop Dog. After becoming joining the board over at FaZe Clan, the mercurial rapper dubbed himself ‘FaZe Snoop’, although he’ll only be using the moniker for official esports business. A long-time fan of video games and the FaZe Clan roster, Snoop’s partnership with the brand would extend to merchandising, branding activities, and content creation.

 424.

Just when you got “Peaches” out of your head…

 425.
Princess Peach and some loyal Toads are about to enjoy a performance at the Sparkle Theater when the wicked Grape and the Sour Bunch bust on the scene to flip the script! These bad actors kidnap the stars of each play, terrorize the other cast and crew, and leave Peach trapped inside as they steal the show. To curtain-call this tragedy, Peach must team up with the theater’s guardian, Stella. Using the power of Sparkle, Peach must take the stage of each play inside the Sparkle Theater and transform to match the performance.

 426.

 427.
Princess Peach has been rescued by Mario more times than I can remember, but since she started having a bit more gusto in the Super Mario Bros Movie, it makes sense for her to have her own game where she doesn’t need rescuing, but instead is the rescuer. Ok, it’s not to save Mario, but instead she must rescue stars of plays in a theatre while taking on key roles during the levels, which take place on a stage that is constantly changing.

 428.
Peach can take on a number of roles such as a swordfighter, a patisserie chef, a detective, a figure skater and a good few more to boot. Each has their own unique ability and the levels based on them are all in the theme of the role for it to make any sense. For example, the swordfighter role sees Peach storm a castle with her sword, while the chef role will see Peach make and decorate cakes against the clock.

 429.

 430.
The theatre has a good few floors and each contains 4 acts of 4 different plays to complete before taking on a boss. The levels are well designed and fun to play, plus the different roles mix things up by changing the formula each time, so you can’t get too familiar with the controls before a new role comes along or you’ll play a second act of another and have to remember how it handled beforehand.

 431.
Bosses are interesting and funny, plus some are not quite the cakewalk you’d think they would be. The game isn’t the toughest out there, but I did die a few times through carelessness or in the case of being a detective, constantly accusing the wrong people which causes you to lose health.

 432.

 433.
It’s a very whimsical game with some impressive visuals and interesting level design. The framerate does have a few issues. It definitely slows down when loading a level and the curtain swaying in the background struggles, but it mostly stays around the 30FPS level. I didn’t come across any glitches and the audio is overly impressive.

 434.
The Verdict

 435.
Princess Peach: Showtime! is an amusing, enjoyable experience from beginning to end. A free demo is out if you want to try before you buy and while a few framerate issues rear its ugly head from time to time, its still another must have title for the Switch.

 436.
Score: 8.5

 466.

Howdy No?

 467.
An all-new South Park game is coming… in 3D. Join Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny, in three-dimensional glory, to celebrate the most magical day in any young child’s life – a snow day! Grab up to three friends and battle your way through the snow-piled streets of South Park on a quest to save the world and enjoy a day without school.

 468.

 469.
Having played and reviewed both the previous South Park games “The Stick of Truth” and “The Fractured But Whole”, I imagined that if there were to be a third game where you play as the “New Kid” that it would follow a similar format, so I was surprised to see that they went down the path that is Snow Day…

 470.
Gone are the turn-based fights and the 2D visuals, which have now been switched to open 3D roguelike combat that you can play co-op with 3 other friends or solo with 3 AI bots. Each level has you beat wave after wave of enemies like kids dressed up as elves or vampires and so on, with a boss at the end of it, the first being the Druid Kyle. You can see where Cartman was going to go with that one…

 471.

 472.
The switch from 2D to 3D is strange at first, but you get used to it quickly. The controls are simple to get used to, though whoever decided that holding down the left trigger would draw the bow and release it to fire it needs shooting. Before a level begins, you’ll be given a choice of cards which give you perks and abilities to use in the battlefield. Your enemy will also get these and at any point with pull out the perks known as “Bullshit!” which can make enemies bigger or reduce your damage for a limited time, for example.

 473.
You can collect other cards during a level by finding Jimmy and trading toilet paper (TP) for them and you can also use TP to upgrade them, while the goth kid Henrietta will let you sacrifice cards for powerups to whatever abilities she offers. You can also find foil cards hidden around the levels that reduce the rareness of cards. These abilities can vary from being able to use a fart to propel yourself into the air and damaging your enemies to increasing damage from your arrows and everything in between.

 474.

 475.
The classic South Park humour is here as you would expect, though there isn’t as much of it as in the past two games of the New Kid saga. But that’s really down to the level of content at the time of writing, which is pretty small at this point. A season pass has been launched that will drop cosmetics up till September, with a new game mode coming out in October but details are sketchy on what that will be. The good news is that Snow Day is a lot cheaper than the past two entries at just under £25.

 476.
The visuals are impressive, even if the 3D versions of South Park characters look a bit odd in comparison to their natural 2D counterparts. They still look a LOT better than the N64/PS1 3D models though, so be grateful for that. The framerate is solid, the soundtrack is decent and the voice-acting is still as great as you would hope with great performances from Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

 477.
The Verdict

 478.
Snow Day won’t be for everyone and it will definitely be seen as the weakest of the later games overall, but I do like that they took a risk and while it didn’t hit the mark, it can still be fun in small doses. Let’s hope the new game mode in October pumps in some much needed content.

 479.
Score: 7.0

 496.

Should you rush out and get this?

 497.
Welcome to the world of racing and frantic fun! BlazeRush is a dynamic arcade racing survival game with no health, no levelling and no brakes! You can assemble a team of friends to play in local or online multiplayer, choose a car to your taste and chase, blow up and cut off! Adapt your style and tactics to new enemies, obstacles and tracks.

 498.

 499.
BlazeRush feels like a combination of Micro Machines and F-Zero. It’s quite an old game now, having launched as far as back as 2014 with later versions coming over the years. I was surprised to see that there wasn’t a PS5/PSVR 2 version when I heard that it did come to HTC Vive, but maybe that will happen down the line?

 500.
The driving works as you would expect from a fast-paced game like this, though the camera can be troublesome at times…which is far from ideal in this situation. There is a single player campaign, albeit brief…while the real fun is multiplayer with friends or online. I did enjoy my time with the game, though it was limited in terms of tracks.

 501.

 502.
For quite an old PS4 game, BlazeRush looks pretty good. It may not have the wow appeal of today’s games, but is still impressive overall. Framerate is consistent and the soundtrack is also decent, making for an overall nice performance across the board.

 503.
The Verdict

 504.
BlazeRush may not be the next F-Zero or Micro Machines, but it has its moments that are highly enjoyable and while it doesn’t have the longest lifespan in terms of content, you’ll find yourself coming back to the track once in a while.

 505.
Score: 6.5

 528.

Does the latest Team Ninja game rise to the challenge?

 529.
It’s darkest before dawn. In Rise of the Ronin you will explore an evolving world as you fight to forge a new era for Japan. You are a Ronin, a warrior free from all masters and bonds and as your destiny intertwines with story characters, take part in an immersive combat focused action experience.

 530.

 531.
Rise of the Ronin feels like a blend of different games. A Souls-like Ninja Gaiden hybrid that feels similar to the Nioh games, but also slightly different at the same time. It’s a fully open world game once you get past the Prologue and this is the first time that Team Ninja have done this, so it’s a bit of a risk for them…but can they deliver a killer blow to the likes of Elden Ring?

 532.
Not quite. While the combat is fairer than a FromSoftware title, the open world does feel a little dated in comparison. I have to applaud Team Ninja for trying though and as a first step, it does deliver what you would hope it to, but it doesn’t excel expectations either. The combat is fluid and there are even difficulty levels to choose from for those who’d rather enjoy the game without the ultimate stress that comes with a Souls-like. It’s still no walk in the park on the easiest difficulty though, but you do get more health and more of a window when it comes to parrying.

 533.
The story is decent and gets you riled up against your enemy. Weapons vary from your typical Samurai weapons to rifles that can blow an enemy’s head clear off his shoulders. The level of gore can be toned down for those with a weak stomach, but on normal settings you’ll be able to decapitate enemies and hack their limbs off with relative ease. You can also stealth kill opponents if you are sneaky enough, which is always satisfying.

 534.

 535.
The open world has plenty to keep you busy with side-quests, while the main story will still take you a considerable amount of time to beat. Your character will get around with a grappling hook, on horseback and on an air glider which all handle well. Combat itself takes some getting used to as you will need to parry your enemy in quick succession to be able to strike a devastating blow. But there are other things you can do like lob explosive barrels at them or throw shurikens at them.

 536.
I found that the visuals were impressive, but sadly can’t compare with the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and we all know what the PS5 is capable of. It feels like it lands somewhere in the middle, but the good news is that the framerate was steady throughout and load times were minimal. I was also highly impressed with the soundtrack and voice-acting.

 537.
The Verdict

 538.
Rise of the Ronin may not be Team Ninja’s finest entry, but it does take risks in going open-world that I applaud them for. It’s more a case of matching what I expected that was slightly disappointing, as opposed to catching me off-guard with something groundbreaking. A small issue in the grand scheme of things, but still an overly enjoyable game…even if it doesn’t set the world on fire.

 539.
Score: 7.5

 562.

Is the second Falconeer game worth a look?

 563.
Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles is an open world builder with freedom and expression at its core, allowing players to build sprawling towns, spires, and fortresses that become hubs for trade, or rallying grounds for conquests. Carve your legacy into a world shattered by the decisions of those who came before you, tower by tower, wall by wall, sculpting from the daunting cliffs and perilous waters of an unforgiving landscape that refuses to be tamed. Tasked with rebuilding a civilization devastated by the aftermath of a war 40 years prior, you are in command of creating the last great settlement upon the Great Ursee – a vast, fantastical oceanic world filled with lost myths, breath-taking vistas and danger. From humble docks and wooden jetties, you will scavenge resources and grow your settlement as your population and creations grow ever grander, sculpting monumental stone towers and battlements that scrape the skies, where airships and giant warbirds rule.

 564.

 565.
The Falconeer was one of the launch games for the Xbox Series X, I reviewed it back then and was a big fan of the aerial combat and the superb visuals. Tomas Sala has done well in creating a new IP that has plenty of lore behind it, but what of the second game in this trilogy?

 566.
Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles couldn’t be much more different from the first. It’s not a combat game, but a world-builder instead. You essentially create buildings that start a loop of trade between towns, fend off invaders and so on with a quite complicated setup that won’t be to everyone’s tastes. The setting definitely fits the series and it looks even better than the original, but the switch from genre may not be for everyone.

 567.
The entire premise is decent, but getting it all to work takes a lot of effort and concentration. At times, I didn’t even know if I was making any progress or if things were just ticking along. The tutorial does touch on the majority of how things work, but even that I found slightly overwhelming. To be fair to the game though, I’m not the greatest at these types of games so perhaps I’m not the best judge of character when it comes to the mechanics behind it, all I’m saying is that I found it overly complicated and unclear at times.

 568.

 569.
I can’t help feeling that the combat was added late on in the development, as it doesn’t seem to blend in as well as the rest of the game. It feels like an after-thought more than anything, I’m not sure if that’s the case or not, but it just doesn’t quite have the same depth as the rest of the game itself.

 570.
The controls start out being fairly simple, but do get more complex as things progress. The camera isn’t free-roam but is instead tied to each building as you build, which can lead to mistakes when placing other buildings and so on. You do get a blimp that can help you navigate more freely, but you do need to click where you want it go as opposed to having the full reins of it. The game does support keyboard and mouse for those who prefer that style over the console controls, but that too still doesn’t fix the issues listed.

 571.
The visuals are great though and it’s great to be back in the world of The Falconeer, even if it’s isn’t quite what most expected from a sequel. The framerate is smooth and the load times are short, while the soundtrack and voice-acting are decent overall.

 572.
The Verdict

 573.
I have to give a lot of credit to Tomas Sala for taking a big risk with this sequel. Most would do the same, but bigger but Sala decided to change the genre entirely and apparently will do so for the third and final game in the series, currently codenamed Project Ancient Waves. It shows he isn’t afraid to take a gamble and even if it doesn’t quite hit the mark, it’s an impressive game once you get the handle of things. Even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of this game, I still love the world he’s created and cannot wait for the next instalment.

 574.
Score: 7.0

 592.

Baking Bad?

 593.
Get up before dawn and see what it’s like to be a baker! Learn to bake several dozen types of bread. Use realistic bakery machines. Deliver orders to stores, earn, and invest. Use original recipes or experiment with ingredients.

 594.

 595.
Baking is somewhat a big thing over here in the UK, especially with shows like The Great British Bake-Off which still gets a sizable audience, despite Paul Hollywood…(oops, I went off into a tangent then…Ok, back to business!) There have been a good amount of cooking simulator games over the years, but not one that is so focused on baking itself, so I can see the appeal of making such a game. But does it rise to the challenge or does it knead more? (Ok, no more baking puns!)

 596.
Bakery Simulator places you in a kitchen with a board of orders to fulfil. You order in the ingredients you need and follow the recipe, including the right measurements for each item needed. You begin with a basic oven, but can eventually upgrade to a better one and also you’ll be able to buy tools to help you cut loaves into certain shapes like triangles, as well as getting individual trays for loaves as opposed to just one big baking tray.

 597.
The controls are easy to get to grips with and besides baking, you’ll also have to drive the order across town to which customer has ordered this fast baked delivery. The driving section itself is top-down, almost reminiscent of the old GTA games and you’ll have to deal with roadblocks that can slow you down or you can find another route that won’t hinder you. You’re also against the clock from the moment you accept the order, so the quicker you get it delivered, the better XP and money you’ll receive.

 598.

 599.
I have noticed a few glitches with selecting the right measurements, but these happen rarely and you can always undo the last item selected by tapping on the bin, or you can empty your entire bowl in and start from scratch. The difficulty definitely increases as you go, but later on you’ll be able to hire someone to do the deliveries for you, eliminating the driving section and saving yourself time.

 600.
The visuals are simple but nice, though the driving section does look a bit rough around the edges. Load times between both are quite long and the first time I transitioned from the kitchen to the car, I honestly thought the game had crashed. Music is chilled and the framerate is mostly consistent, but I do wish there was a native PS5 version.

 601.
The Verdict

 602.
Bakery Simulator does a good job in delivering what it promises, even if it does occasionally mess up with measurement selection and doesn’t always run the smoothest. For fans of baking, this will definitely keep you entertained for quite some time.

 622.

Is this the Contra we’ve been waiting for?

 623.
When the Red Falcon terrorist group takes over the Galuga Islands off the coast of New Zealand, elite Contra commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean springs into action, initiating an all-out war in which the fate of mankind hangs in the balance! Run, jump, and shoot your way through eight levels using a devastating arsenal – including the spread shot, laser, and homing missiles – now with stackable upgrades and awesome Overload abilities! The intense action is customizable with three difficulty settings plus a variety of additional challenge options. Contra: Operation Galuga is a thorough reimagining of the classic run-‘n’-gun action game from the ’80s, featuring modern graphics and sound, new stages, new enemies and bosses, new play mechanics, an updated weapons system, and explosive co-op combat for up to two players in Story Mode or four players in Arcade Mode!

 624.

 625.
There have been a good number of Contra games over the years, most of them superb…while later entries haven’t faired so well. The series hadn’t seen a game since 2019’s Contra: Rogue Corps which was a top-down isometric run-and-gun game as opposed to the traditional side-scroller that we’ve all loved over the years. Operation Galuga is a return to the old style and is labelled by Konami as a reimagining of the original game.

 626.
The developer WayForward isn’t a stranger to the Contra series, having previously released Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS in 2007 and was modelled after Contra III: The Alien Wars, with upgradable weapons similar to Super Contra. Sadly that game was never released in Europe so I didn’t get to play it at the time…

 627.

 628.
The classic run-and-gun gameplay returns and brings the nostalgia with it. The difficulty is still as tough as it ever was, even with a player fighting alongside you in Story Mode. It didn’t take me too long to blast through the story, but there is also an Arcade Mode which you can play with 4 players. Sadly it’s couch co-op only, but considering the lack of those types of games these days, its more than welcome.

 629.
The levels are well varied and the weapons are satisfying to use. The game handles as you would hope from a classic Contra game and while the new visuals may not be to everyone’s tastes, I personally liked how it looked. It also runs at a solid framerate throughout and I didn’t come across any glitches during my playthrough. If there’s a problem to be found, its that the game plays it safe by ticking all the boxes for a Contra game but not expanding beyond them. Which in the grand scheme of things is tiny.

 630.
The Verdict

 631.
Contra: Operation Galuga takes the series back to its roots with this reimagining of the original classic. It may not take any risks, but does more than enough to satisfy veterans of the franchise. I had low expectations going in, so I was more than pleasantly surprised with the final outcome.

 653.

Is this horror damned from the start?

 654.
Shines Over: The Damned will take you into a unique experimental horror experience in first person, where your senses will be tested and your reality questioned. You have no name, no memory, no weapons. There are no friends to protect you. You are alone except for your faithful German Shepherd dog, who will guide you through this dark world and stay by your side. Immerse yourself in a mysterious and terrifying walking simulator with your faithful companion, where jump scares, tension, and environmental puzzles surround you, and danger lies in wait. Beware of the horrors that await you in Shines Over: The Damned. You have been warned…

 655.

 656.
Horror walking simulator games have been plentiful over the years, some have nailed the horror element quite well, while others not so much. Shines Over: The Damned has all the hallmarks of a decent one with its atmospheric setting, but could it be a horror in another way?

 657.
The game almost feels like a tech demo in a sense. There’s no option to pause, the game doesn’t save and if you hit Options twice you are sent back to the main menu and have to restart from the beginning. First-person platforming can be hit and miss, in which case this I sadly the latter with brutally difficult jumps to make with zero room for error. The puzzles themselves are obscure and at times, they actually glitched until I died and came back to the area to find it completed.

 658.

 659.
Other times you can die without knowing why and have to replay a good 5-10 minutes before getting back to the same area, then die again. I was able to beat the game in the end, but it was more through perseverance than skill. The horror aesthetic of the game is impressive and it looks stunning, The audio is decent and the framerate is steady throughout but the jump scares do come too often and so much so, that you end up knowing when its coming.

 660.
The Verdict

 661.
Shines Over: The Damned looks impressive and has some good ideas, but the design choices like a lack of a pause menu and not being able to save is just bizarre. The glitches are frustrating and the jump scares become predictable. It’s a shame when it looks as good as it does to see it fail to achieve its goal.

 684.

Is this first-person puzzler worth your time?

 685.
Re:Touring is a first-person puzzle game in which you’ll explore the abandoned Luoni Energy Competence Center. Using a retro-style computer, you’ll create colour patterns to progress through the levels.

 686.

 687.
Re: Touring looks a lot like other first-person puzzle games like Portal, QUBE and The Turing Test with its abandoned facility and room after room of puzzles. This game has you go into in a room that has a computer in it and set up a pattern of colours that will activate certain doors, lifts or walkways for you to continue. It starts out simple, but gets a lot tougher as you progress.

 688.
I do like how the game throws you into the mix of things from the off, though it may prove daunting for some. The difficulty level definitely amps up as you try and figure out what to set the colour of the buttons to and start the sequence. Sometimes you’ll stumble across the right solution and not know why, but it mostly requires a lot of practise and patience to overcome. Unless you go and cheat by looking up the answers, that is.

 689.

 690.
The visuals are impressive and give that classic sterile environment that you would expect from a game like this. The framerate is consistently smooth and never dropped, while load times were short and I didn’t come across any glitches through my playthrough.

 691.
The Verdict

 692.
Re: Touring is a tough first-person puzzler that takes its aesthetic from the likes of Portal. It may not be as memorable as it, but it does provide a good challenge and will definitely test your brain and your patience well.
