Care Guide and General Information Green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) may be a plentiful reptile that are available inexpensively, and are small, but they are reptiles. Their care is vital to their health, and they have a lot to offer. Anoles are small and fast, and overall make a pretty cool pet. Appearance Hence the name, green anoles are green in color, but their belly is more of a cream color. Males have a purple or blue flap under their chin that extends and fills with air when mating or warning off other males. Females also have this flap, but it is not as bright or large as a male's. Green anoles have tails that are nearly twice their body length, that come to a fine tip. Hatchlings and females have a blue stripe down their back, but on a male that stripe will fade away with maturity. With the proper care and treatment, a green anole can live to be five or more years old. A green anole will typically grow to about nine inches, but some can grow to be a foot long. Handling and Aggression These lizards are better off just to watch. Any age green anole will look to make a speedy escape when the chance is possible. Very few can be tamed to sit on your hand, but if you have regular handling sessions with a hatchling and as it grows, handling can be possible. Diet Green anoles are not picky eaters, and have a sole diet of insects. Crickets provide a chase, and are the healthiest, but worms like mealworms, superworms, and silk worms work fine. These anoles will keep eating, and you will want to make sure that you do not overfeed them. Overfeeding will shorten their life span, and they will be lethargic, and will behave differently. Gut loading any insect fed is essential so your anole can get the best possible nutrients. Dust all the insects for hatchlings, and every other time for adults. Housing Requirements A single or pair of adult anoles will need a minimum of a 20 gallon tank. Hatchlings and juveniles can be kept in a 10 gallon tank until they out grow it. If you house more than two in the same enclosure, add ten more gallons for each anole you add. Do not house males together because they will fight, and potentially kill each other. Green anoles are good climbers so a higher tank should be used. Always have the lid on the tank or else they will escape. In the tank give them plenty of foliage to hide, and explore in. Substrate Substrate is what goes on the bottom of the tank, and since they are more of a tropical species, a moisture absorbing substrate is important. For babies, paper towels can be used and replaced when soiled. Adults can have a loose substrate of non-fertilized potting soil or sphagnum moss. Replace loose substrates every six months. Shelter As long as you provide plenty of hiding places in the foliage so as driftwood, hide boxes are not required. Temperature The cage should stay at 75F, but a basking spot of 80F should be provided. If an external heating source is needed, avoid under tank heaters because they will not heat the air. Bulbs of the appropriate wattage should be used to create a 12 hour photoperiod. At night, the temperature can drop 10-15F. Green anoles need UVA or UVB bulbs. Read the instructions that come with the bulb so it is placed right, and working effectively. Water and Humidity Green anoles need 60-70% humidity constant in the cage to stay hydrated. Dehydration is one of the largest causes of reptile death. The tank should be misted about twice daily, depending on the overall humidity in your house. A water bowl is optional because most will lick water off of leaves and glass. Cleaning Paper towels need to be replaced when soiled, and loose substrate replaced about every six months. Remove feces as you see them, and remember to mist the cage. Maintenance is pretty basic, and becomes easier once you get a system down. Breeding Be sure to do your homework before trying breeding. The anole is a prolific breeder, but the challenge is the babies. You will have to do just about everything for them until they can take care of themselves. Most anoles that people will buy are wild caught because they are everywhere in the south. Breeding is getting more popular because of how much healthier the hatchlings will be, and the fact that they have litters up to 12 babies helps too. In October or early November, lower the heat of both the female\x82Äôs and the male\x82Äôs tanks. Keep temperatures lower until April or May to get them in the mood. Introduce them if you have not already. A female anole will lay single eggs anywhere in the cage, normally under leaf litter. A lay box can be provided, but may not be used. While the mating and laying process is happening, the temperatures should be slowly rising back to normal. The photoperiod should also be increasing in length. Once you see an egg, place it in an incubator kept at a constant 85F, and it will need to stay moist, but not soaked. Eggs hatch in 35 days, and hatchlings will start eating a few days after they have emerged from their egg. Once they hatch, you have a whole new problem. Hatchling Care Young anoles need to eat every day a diet of pinhead crickets and fruit puree. Make sure they all get food to eat, and if any are bullied, separate them from the group until they are caught up. A 10 to 20 gallon tank with several hides is fine for the whole group. A secure lid with a UV bulb with paper towel substrate and a couple pieces of driftwood is an ideal setup. As the hatchlings mature, they should all get split up until they each get their own care. Conclusion Anoles are common, cheap pets that should not be underestimated. They live best alone, and can live happily for over 5 years with the right care. Do your research before buying any pet, and have fun watching this attentive, fast, and hungry lizard.

68-77 degrees * If temp falls below 65 at night, may need supplemental infrared or ceramic heat WILD HISTORY: Native to the Southeastern United States from eastern Virginia down to Florida and as far west as Texas. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Green tree frogs have a delicate grass green skin with a light cream colored stripe on the side of the body running from the jaw to the flank. Because of their delicate and porous skin, handling your frog is not recommended. It is very easy to transfer toxins from hands to frog skin, and vice versa - be sure to wash your hands after handling your frog. NORMAL BEHAVIOR & INTERACTION: Nocturnal (most active at night) and arboreal (tree dwelling). These frogs live in groups and will get along fine as long as there is proper space for each frog. A minimum of 4 gallons of tank space per frog is a good measure, but the tank should not be smaller than 20 gallons (high) overall, even for one frog. NOTE: DO NOT house green tree frogs with other species due to the differences in care, temperatures, and the fact that some species can be highly stressed in the presence of other species. FEEDING: Carnivorous (insectivorous) - live food. Green tree frogs eat live protein sources such as: gut-loaded crickets, earthworms and wax worms. Wild caught insects should never be fed, since they can carry disease and parasites. All insects should be gut loaded (fed a nutritious diet about 24-hours before being offered to your frog - see our cricket care sheet). Be careful to feed the proper size prey for your frog’s size. A good rule of thumb is that a cricket should never be larger than the distance between the frog’s eyes, or the distance from its eyes to its nose. When feeding larger insects to your pet, try to make sure the insects have recently molted, as an insect with a large, hard exoskeleton is difficult to digest and may cause impactions. Some reptile/amphibian owners find it easier and safer to feed their pet in a separate enclosure, free of bedding and furniture, this way you can be sure your pet eats all its insects, the prey cannot hide, and the frog will not pick up any bedding when grabbing prey and mistakenly ingest it along with the prey. Do remember, however, that green tree frogs are very delicate and their skin can tear easily. Take care in handling. SUPPLEMENTS: Dust food with calcium supplement and vitamin supplements. As a rule, a growing juvenile's food (and a pregnant/gravid female’s) should be dusted more often than an adult's. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions for applying supplements to avoid over-supplementing food. Our veterinarian recommends dusting insects with a good quality calcium supplement fortified with vitamin D3, 2-3 times a week. (Avoid using a calcium supplement with added phosphorous, unless specifically directed by your veterinarian, since this can promote kidney disease.) Always consult your veterinarian for specific directions on supplementing your pet’s food, since there are many variables that go into determining the best supplementation regimen for each animal. WATER: All water given to amphibians for bathing, swimming or drinking, as well as water used for misting must be 100% free of chlorine and heavy metals. (Not all home water filtration systems remove 100% of the chlorine and heavy metals from tap water). We recommend that you use unflavored bottled drinking water or bottled natural spring water; never untreated tap water. If tap water is used, you should treat it with a de-chlorinating treatment. If you do not want to chemically de-chlorinate the water, you can leave an open container of tap water out for at least 24 hours. The chlorine will naturally dissipate. Never use distilled water, which can cause severe medical problems, since it lacks minerals that are essential to important body functions. Change the water in your frog’s enclosure every one to two days. A daily misting or two with chlorine-free water will also be appreciated. However, care should be taken not to allow the enclosure to become damp. Also, do not mist less than two hours before turning the heat lamps off for the day.

If you find turtles in a safe place, leave them there. Turtles are very slow to mature and very few hatchlings live to adulthood. For these reasons, removing any individuals from the wild can greatly impact local populations. Keep wild turtles safe Generally, wild turtles should be left where they are found. However, sometimes they end up on a road or in another unsafe place. If you find a turtle in the road, it's usually best to just help them across safely and release them in the direction that they were going. Being safe around traffic is always important for turtle rescuers as well! If you see turtles on their backs at the side of the road, carefully turn them over and put them well away from the traffic. Gently put them on nice flat areas of grass or dirt facing in the same direction they were going; avoid rocky places and ditches. Long-tailed turtles might be snapping turtles and they can bite. They can be safely moved out of the street with a long-handled shovel but be sure to be very gentle. Turtles as pets Keeping a turtle as a pet is a significant commitment. Here are some things to consider before buying one: Remember that wild turtles should never be taken home as pets. Be sure that you buy your turtle from a reputable store or breeder and that it is not wild caught. Turtles can live a long time – up to 80 years for some species! Be sure that you are ready for that kind of commitment. Research the diet, habitat and light requirements for the species that you are considering keeping as a pet. For most species, an aquarium is not sufficient. Never release a pet turtle into the wild. Turtles kept in captivity may not have the important nutrients they need to survive through the cold winter. In addition, your turtle may not be native to your area and should not interbreed with wild turtles. Captive turtles may also carry diseases or parasites that could harm the local population. For these reasons, it is very important that if you no longer want a pet turtle and do not know where it was captured, you should try to find a capable new owner. For help, contact a local herpetology society, zoo or wildlife rehabber. Your state’s department of wildlife web page is a usually a great place to find lists of certified rehabbers. Help improve turtle habitat Participate in local community or river cleanups. Healthy turtle populations start with a healthy habitat. Don’t litter! Leave fallen trees and branches in place along shorelines. Turtles use these as a platform for basking in the sun. Other ways to help If you find injured or sick turtles, take them immediately to a turtle specialist. Call your local humane society, wildlife rehabber or zoo for the name of a turtle expert near you. Don’t buy real tortoiseshell barrettes, brushes, ornaments or jewelry. Make sure it’s plastic before buying anything that looks like tortoiseshell. Avoid restaurants with turtle soup, turtle eggs or turtle meat on the menu.

Thank you and God bless. Pet Squirrels Native to the Americas, Africa and Eurasia, squirrels belong in the Sciuridae family. This family consists of tiny to medium sized rodents including flying squirrels, tree squirrels, chipmunks, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, marmots and woodchucks. According to zoologists, dated back in Eocene, the earliest known squirrels are very close relative to mountain beaver and dormouse. Though squirrels can live in every climate, global warming and continuously changing habitat conditions may cause some trouble for them. Squirrels are very adaptive in nature, because of this quality they can live in some of the harshest parts of the world. While Ground squirrels can be found living in two of the hottest deserts in the world, Mohave Desert and Kalahari Desert, Arctic ground squirrels have evolved to thriving in extreme environments. A suitable and specious cage is very essential for squirrels. While adult squirrel needs a bigger cage to climb around, babies require a small cage so they don't hurt themselves. At least 3' tall cage without much shelves and ladder will be ok for your pet. A cage having enough climbing room and some stick of wood to chew on will be a nice housing for squirrel. Keeping some hardwood stick in cage is a good idea as it plays an important role for squirrel's dental health and teething babies. You can drape fabric over the back and top of the cage, as it makes squirrel feel more secure. You can also keep newspaper on the bottom of the cage. Squirrels need a lot of space to roam around freely and as keeping them inside the house is not a good idea, you must think of an outdoor cage. These tiny pets have strong teeth which help them to chew almost everything, so make the doors of the cage a little tough to open. If you have an outdoor cage, make sure that they are well-protected from the sun, wind, rain and other animals. If you don't want to keep your cute pets in cage, nest box and hammocks are also considered as a good housing for your squirrels. In order to make a comfortable place to sleep, you can keep shoe box with a folded blanket or other soft material in the cage. You can put your old T-shirt in the nest box to make a good bed for your pet. Don't use towels as squirrels can get claws caught in the loop of thread. Change or wash the T-shirt once a week. When it comes to baby squirrel you have to be more careful. Babies cant thermo regulate themselves that means they can't keep themselves warm without assistance or help. Putting a heating pad inside the cage is a good idea but make sure that the temperature doesn't go up 100 degree Celsius. Never feed a cold squirrel as they can't digest food. Enrichment Being active is very important for their overall health and well being. Just like human being, your little pets may also need some playtime and exercises. Exercise and playing: To keep your little pets healthy and active, you can put some stuffed toys of their size in the cage and nest box, squirrels love to wrestle with the small toys. You can attach some tree branches or natural wood bird perches to the side of their cage. It will give them a natural home like feeling.
