32.

On any given day this week when temperatures inch into the 90s, you can visit any of the high rise apartment pools near the University of Arizona and find dozens of students laying out, lathered in tanning oil.

 33.
For many students, especially those from colder places, the idea of being able to get a quick tan in between classes is exciting. But many do not know the risks.

 34.
“It’s such a fun and relaxing way to spend time with my friends or do some homework,” said Sena Brenden, who enjoys tanning at her apartment building’s rooftop pool.

 35.
She said she’s not alone; about 90% of her friends enjoy tanning, too.

 36.
When students tan, either outside or using a tanning bed, they are exposed to UV radiation (UVR).

 37.
“Too much UVR causes skin cancer, not to mention wrinkles and sagging skin,” said Lisa Quale, a health educator at the UA Cancer Center. “There is no way to tan safely unless you choose a tanning mist/airbrush tan or self-tanning products.”

 38.
“Tanning is your skin’s natural defense against damaging UVR from the sun and tanning beds. Your skin darkens to try to block the rays from reaching the deeper layers of your skin,” she said.

 39.
Even when they are not purposely aiming to get a tan, UA students are constantly exposed to sunlight throughout the year, even just walking to class. The UA Skin Cancer Institute has created an acronym, ACE, to help students remember how to stay sun safe.

 40.
A – avoid too much sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

 41.
“I used to make getting to my classes a game of how much shade I could find along the way,” Quale siad. “You can also carry an umbrella…this helps with the heat of the sun, as well.”

 42.
C – cover up. Quale recommends clothing with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) built in, but students can also opt for UV blocking sunglasses or a wide brimmed hat.

 43.
Quale said that students should apply sunscreen every 90 minutes or after they have been sweating or swimming.

 44.
“We recommend a sun protection factor of 30 or higher. Use a broad-spectrum product to protect against both UVA and UVB types of radiation,” she said. “Often forgotten spots are the neck, ears, feet, hands and lips.”

 45.
E – examine your skin. Keep an eye out for spots, both new and changing, and reach out to a healthcare provider if you notice anything suspicious. Ideally, students should visit a dermatologist annually.

(Graphic by Frances LaBianca)

 47.
According to the UA Skin Cancer Institute, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. today. It’s even more common in Arizona where the sunny weather leads to potentially excessive amounts of UVR and high rates of non-melanoma skin cancers.

 48.
The tan skinned aesthetic so many UA students seek could lead to serious health conditions, but still many students choose to tan because it boosts their confidence.

 49.
“I’m super pale and love the glow of a nice tan,” explained Brenden.

 50.
Taylor Carpenter, who is originally from Massachusetts, said that tanning helped her feel better in her own skin.

 51.
“The going out culture adds to the pressure of tanning because you want to look your best when you go out on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night, and being tan adds to the look,” she said.

 52.
UA students often opt for indoor tanning, as well, and many of the apartments near campus, including Pacific, Malibu, and the Cottages have their own tanning beds.

 53.
Quale said that tanning beds can be more risky than outdoor tanning since they emit a type of radiation that damages deeper layers of the skin.

 54.
“Just one indoor tanning session increases a person’s chances of developing melanoma by 20%, and using a tanning bed increases a person’s risk for melanoma by 75%,” said Quale.

 55.
Carpenter said that indoor tanning helps her to keep her natural, outdoor tan throughout the year.

 56.
“I love tanning outdoors in the summer, but I would hate to lose the tan so that’s where indoor tanning comes in,” she said. “It’s also nice that it only takes 12 minutes instead of a whole day.”

 57.
Overall, Quale wants students to understand that there is no such thing as safe tanning. UA students will always face high sun exposure, but there are ways for them to prevent sun damage and stay safe.

 58.
“Your natural color is the best color to be,” said Quale.

 79.
Late Monday morning, an individual called Brother Dean Saxton sat outside in front of the Administration building with a sign that said “Dressing immodestly is sin!” on one side and “Are you rape bait?” on the other side.

 80.

Brother Dean Saxton, an individual who has previously been kicked off the University of Arizona campus for assaulting a student, sat outside the Administration building with a sign that said “Dressing immodestly is sin!” on one side and “Are you rape bait?” on the other side Monday morning.

 81.
As Saxton commented on girls’ outfits who walked by, calling them derogatory terms, a crowd gathered to ask questions and heckle him. This escalated to Saxton walking down the UA Mall and through the Student Union Memorial Center while being followed by this crowd, and resulted in police arrival at 12:45 p.m.

 82.
Saxton was also wearing a red shirt that said “women are property” on the front and “types of property: women, slaves, animals, cars, land, etc…” on the back.

 83.
Saxton is a repeat offender, a UA alumni who was arrested in 2016 for kicking a student and banned from campus for a year. He returned in 2017, with the same message that he brought to campus Monday.

 84.
The police were called by several different members of the crowd and stayed in case the situation escalated and became violent.

 85.
Saxton, however, claimed that he was not there to incite violence, saying he was there for attention.

 86.
In pursuit of this, he quoted the Bible and made derogatory comments about women, specifically those at UA.

 87.
“I’m reaching the scum of the U of A campus. That is who I’m trying to reach and that is who I am reaching,” Saxton said.

 88.
These derogatory comments, along with his shirt and sign, attracted a large number of enraged students. Community members of many different backgrounds and beliefs gathered to confront Saxton about his beliefs and contest the claims made on his sign.

 89.
“I don’t think that he should be here, and I think it’s just funny that no one agrees with him and he came here thinking that he was going to get his point across and the whole school has kind of come together trying to get him off campus,” said Madison Jerald, a student who had been challenging Saxton since the beginning of the day.

 90.
“The disrespect that he’s walking around with right now is insane,” said Lucaas Gonzalez, another student who had been adamantly challenging these beliefs. “The fact that he’s generalizing all of these girls, I’m not going to take that.”

 91.
However, freshman Zita Neo attempted a different tactic when she approached Saxton, trying to reason with him instead of combatting him directly. According to Neo, she brought up Matthew 5:28-29, which talks about lust in a different context than Saxton was discussing it.
92.

 93.
“I brought up, if that’s what the Bible states, why is there such thing as ‘rape bait?’” Neo said. “He was a little bit receptive to that. I can understand why he’s not talking too much because he’s in a stressful situation, but he was receptive enough and he responded to what he could until he was interrupted.”

 94.
Even members of the Women and Gender Resource Center came down to observe the gathered crowd, bringing a speaker and playing music as they watched the escalation of this event. “We had students come into the center and tell us that they were sad because he called them a whore, so we figured we would come down and play music,” Angelina Fusitua, a member of the Women and Gender Resource Center, said.

 95.
“We’re just here to make it clear that we don’t stand with this,” Fiona van Haren, another member of the WGRC, said. “There are people here who don’t agree with this.”

 96.
The general consensus, among the students and non-students who were there, was that Saxton was there for attention. He had a camera on his shirt for a video that he would put on the internet and, with the crowd he had gathered, he succeeded in getting said attention.

 97.
“The crowd could learn that nothing’s going to happen. The more attention we give him, that’s what he wants. It’s all rage bait,” Sophia Ferazani, another student who had been there for several hours, said.

 115.
University of Arizona leadership provided financial updates amidst protests and backlash at the most recent Arizona Board of Regents meeting held on the UA campus on April 18.

 116.

University of Arizona leadership disclosed progress in addressing the institution’s financial challenges during an Arizona Board of Regents meeting on April 18. John Arnold, interim Chief Financial Officer and senior vice president for Business Affairs, presented the university’s preliminary budget for fiscal year 2025 during this session.

 117.
Before meeting with ABOR, President Dr. Robert C. Robbins sent an email to the campus community on the morning of April 18.

 118.
“I am pleased to announce the University is projecting that the FY 2025 budget deficit will be reduced from $162 million down to $52 million,” Robbins said in the email.

 119.
The focus on solving the FY 2025 budget deficit is a direct result of the university’s mishandling of funds that became apparent in November of last year.

 120.
The ABOR meeting was met with protests and resentment from students, staff and faculty. Many have felt that there has been a lack of communication and transparency from higher administration.

 121.
“All these successes are written in dollar amounts. We’ve gone from one large number to a smaller number. That’s how they calculate their victories — through numbers and dollars,” Rhys Williams, president of Arizona Divest and a member of United Campus Workers Arizona said during a campus protest on April 18.

 122.
UCWAZ held this protest outside the UA Administration building an hour before the ABOR meeting to advocate for those impacted by the financial mismanagement and budget cuts at the UA.

 123.
“It doesn’t mention the fact that our pharmacy is shut down completely. It doesn’t mention the fact that our university’s Climate Action Plan is indefinitely delayed without notice for the entire semester,” Williams said in response to Robbins’ email.

 124.
Students, staff and faculty continued to show their dissatisfaction with the UA and ABOR during the allotted time for public comments at the meeting, including Associated Students of the University of Arizona Student Body President Alyssa Sanchez.

 125.
“President Robbins has met with me less than five times this entire school year, despite past presidents meeting with him monthly. This lack of consistent dialogue undermines the representation of students’ needs and concerns. In addition to this, the exclusion of ASUA and [Graduate and Professional Student Council] presidents from the search committee for the new university president is deeply troubling,” Sanchez said.

 126.
Despite these grievances surrounding budget cuts and transparency issues, Arnold said the university maintains a solid set of goals moving forward.

 127.
“Our goals around student retention, graduation rates, enrollment, student achievement and post-university success — we are not backing off on any of those goals,” Arnold said.

 128.
Arnold and Robbins have met with department heads of colleges and division leaders to seek potential budget proposals with reductions of 5%, 10% and 15% with hopes that this could avoid budget cuts that would affect the entire university.

 129.
In the last few months, UA Chief Budget Officer Garth Perry, Provost Ronald Marx, Robbins and Arnold have been convening to launch and implement a financial aid redesign, the majority of which will be implemented in fall 2025.

 130.
This redesign includes decreasing high-end merit aid, conducting third party reviews on athletics programs and the University of Arizona Global Campus, working with the Strategic Planning and Budget Advisory Committee and establishing the University Advisory Committee, coupled with the centralization and restructuring of several departments.

 131.
However, Arnold said that the school won’t only be relying on budget cuts to make up for the financial deficit. According to Arnold, “base revenue assumptions,” like an increase in tuition rates, growth in enrollment of graduate students, investment earnings and “new revenue opportunities” like UAGC, program expansions and auxiliaries will also help.

 132.
During the ABOR meeting, Arnold released the high-level university budget for FY 2025 and announced university leadership would publish an initial budget for individual colleges next week. According to Arnold, each administrative budget will most likely not be released until the end of May.

 133.
According to Arnold, the Executive Office of the President and the Office of the Secretary faced the most significant budgetary adjustments, resulting in a loss of almost $5 million, a 28.2% decrease.

 134.
According to Arnold’s presentation, administration and the Office of the Provost can be expected to lose $30.1 million in their FY 2025 budget, a 6.3% decrease. Colleges can expect to lose $26.1 million, a 3.6% decrease. However, the FY 2025 budget increases spending in facilities and utilities by $2.9 million, and safety and police by $1.3 million; a 2.5 % and 9.2 % increase respectively.

 135.
“We’ve taken a big bite out of the deficit. Really this is [2025]; when we set the budget for fiscal [year 2026], we will wipe out the rest of that 52 million dollars,” Arnold said.

 175.

The No. 19 Arizona softball team swept in-state rival ASU, capturing its third conference series win of the season at Rita Hillenbrand Stadium between Friday, April 19 and Sunday, April 21.

 176.
Arizona (31-13-1, 12-9 Pac-12) defeated ASU (18-25, 2-16 Pac-12) with two walk-off hits, the first in game one, winning 3-2 and the second in game three, winning 9-8. The Wildcats also mercy-ruled ASU 13-3 in five innings in game two of the series.

 177.
Day 1: Friday, April 19

 178.
Game 1: Arizona vs. ASU at 5 p.m.

 179.
In game one, Arizona sent out Brook Mannon as the starting pitcher. However, her time in the circle would be short-lived as ASU hit a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning. Mannon was replaced by Aissa Silva in the second inning.

 180.
Arizona quickly countered in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs to tie the game at two. After scoring early, the teams entered a pitching battle where both teams refused to give up a run to the other. In the bottom of the seventh inning, it looked like another extra-inning game would take place for the Wildcats. However, Kaiah Altmyer changed that, hitting a two-out walk-off solo home run to win the game for the Wildcats. Silva got the win, adding to her strong record of 19-4.

 181.
Day 2: Saturday, April 20

 182.
Game 2: Arizona vs. ASU at 4 p.m.

 183.
Game two saw a return of Arizona softball alumni, as it was a decades-day at Rita Hillenbrand Stadium. Fifty years of Arizona softball walked out onto the field to watch Mike Candrea, Arizona’s old softball coach who retired three years ago, throw out the first pitch.

 184.
With the added boost from the alumni, the Wildcats jumped out to the early lead in game two, with a leadoff home run from Dakota Kennedy in the bottom of the first inning. Arizona’s starting pitcher, Miranda Stoddard, gave up a run in the top of the second inning, but it had no effect on the Wildcats as they scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the second inning after another Altymer homer.

 185.
Arizona did not stop there, though. The Wildcats went on to score 6 more runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking a commanding lead over ASU. After giving up a couple of runs to ASU in the top of the fourth inning, the Wildcats continued to bombard ASU with their high-powered offense. Arizona put up another 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, increasing its lead to 10 runs. Arizona sent in Ali Blanchard to finish out the top of the fifth inning where she and the Wildcats defense ended the game with a mercy rule.

 192.
Game 3: Arizona vs. ASU at 2 p.m.

 193.
In the final game of the series, the Wildcats sent Silva out as their starting pitcher. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats answered, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the second to take their first of many leads on the day.

 194.
Arizona’s and ASU’s offenses locked into a back-and-forth battle that lasted all game. ASU regained the lead in the top of the third after the ASU shortstop hit a 3-run homer. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Tayler Beihl helped the Wildcats reclaim the lead with a 3-run homer of her own.

 195.
Mannon came into pitch for Silva after the third inning, helping the Wildcats keep the ASU offense quiet for two innings. Arizona, on the other hand, scored 1 more run in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 6-4 lead. Stoddard then came in to pitch for Mannon in the top of the sixth inning, with two runners on for ASU. After the Wildcats decided to intentionally walk Stoddard’s first batter to load the bases, ASU’s catcher hit a grand slam, clearing the bases and giving ASU an 8-6 lead over Arizona.

 196.
Entering the seventh inning, Arizona put Silva back in to pitch the last inning, where she shut down the ASU batters, keeping the deficit at two. Trailing 8-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Regan Shocky hit a ball through the infield, scoring 1 run for the Wildcats. One batter later, senior Carlie Scupin hit the ball into the gap in left-center field, scoring two runs and giving the Wildcats the win on senior day. After securing the series sweep for the Arizona, Scupin was carried off the field in celebration. Silva also collected her 20th win of the season.

Arizona would then travel to Eugene, Ore., to face the No. 57 University of Oregon on Sunday, April 21, at noon at Oregon Student Tennis Center. The Wildcats entered these matches coming off back-to-back victories against the No. 21 ASU and the University of Utah the week prior. Arizona would only continue its excellent play and close out another weekend with back-to-back victories, closing out its regular season by winning four straight matches.

 254.
Arizona (21-3, 7-1 in Pac-12) swept Washington (8-14, 2-6 in Pac-12) Friday evening 4-0 to reach its eighth sweep of the season. The Wildcats closed out the weekend facing Oregon (14-12, 3-5 in Pac-12), defeating the Ducks 4-1 to finish their regular season as the Pac-12 Regular Season Co-Champions for the third straight season, sharing the championship with No. 20 Stanford University.

 257.
In the two doubles matches, Arizona had the clear advantage from the first batted ball till the final blown whistle. No. 29 Colton Smith and Jay Friend played on court and secured a decisive 6-3 victory against Dzianis Zharyn and Brett Pearson from Washington, while Herman Hoeyerall and Eric Padgham followed suit on court two, fending off Cesar Bouchelaghem and Han-Chih Lin to secure a 6-4 win for the Wildcats and take the doubles point for Arizona.

 258.
To close out the day were the singles matches, and Arizona did not let up in any of them, clinching five of six first singles sets. Senior Nick Lagaev added to the Wildcats’ momentum against the Huskies with a solid 6-4, 6-4 victory against Jim Hendrikx on court six. Casper Christensen ultimately sealed the victory for the Wildcats on court five with a 6-3, 7-6(9) win over Ivan Sodan.

 259.
After another stellar day of play, the Wildcats turned their full attention toward Oregon, whom they would be facing in their regular season finale before heading into postseason play.

 260.
Day 2: No. 10 Arizona vs. No. 57 Oregon – Sunday, April 21, noon

 261.
On Sunday, Arizona secured its share of the Pac-12 Regular Season Championship for the third consecutive season with a 4-1 victory over Oregon.

 262.
Despite Oregon gaining an early advantage by securing the doubles point, Arizona responded strongly. Hoeyerall and Padgham’s 6-2 win on court two against Ray Lo and Lenn Luemkemann helped Arizona regain momentum. The crucial point swung in Oregon’s favor on court three, where Vlad Breazu and Avi Shugar clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Sasha Rozin and Gustaf Stron.

 263.
However, Arizona turned the tide of the match with dominant singles play, winning all six first sets. Christensen set the tone with his impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Luemkemann. Lagaev continued the momentum with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Lo on court six. No. 20 Smith extended Arizona’s lead with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over No. 83 Quinn Vandecasteele on court one. After a slow start to the day, the Wildcats rallied, and Hoeyeraal sealed the victory for Arizona with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over Matthew Burton and secured the team win.

 264.
Looking ahead:

 265.
The Wildcats locked up the No. 2 seed for the Pac-12 Tennis Championships and will be heading to Ojai, California, to face its first-round opponent, the No. 7 seed USC, on Thursday, April 25 at 3 p.m. at Libby Park.

 290.

The Arizona baseball team blew two leads in the top of the ninth during its series against Washington State University. The bullpen, which had looked impenetrable in recent weeks, suddenly struggled to close out games late. However, as has often been the case for Arizona this season, late-game heroics from the bats led to a couple of walk-off wins, helping the Wildcats execute their fourth consecutive weekend series sweep and extend their conference winning streak to 10 games, their longest streak since joining the Pac-12 in 1979.

 291.
“We knew they were going to bring their best,” Arizona head coach Chip Hale said. “It’s a tough weekend for [Washington State]. They could have easily won two games.”

 292.
Day 1: Friday, April 19

 293.
Game 1: Arizona vs. Washington State at 6 p.m.

 294.
Emilio Corona can’t catch a break. He’s gone hitless in four at-bats tonight: a popout, a lineout and a pair of swinging strikeouts. He’ll finish the series 1 for 14, dropping his batting average to .238 on the season. Yet, he walks to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, his team down a run with two outs and runners on the corners.

 295.
In baseball, one good, well-timed at-bat can wipe the memory of a night full of bad ones. Corona’s only hit of the series does just that when he slaps a ground ball that just gets past the glove of Washington State third baseman Cole Cramer to tie the game.

 296.
The next hitter, Maddox Mihalakis, fights off a series of breaking balls before hitting a 2-2 pitch to left field that drops for a single. Third-base coach Toby DeMello sends Easton Breyfogle home. The throw from left fielder Max Hartman is high, allowing Breyfogle to slide under the catcher’s glove. Arizona walks it off. Again.

 297.
For the fifth time in their last eight home games, the Wildcats won via walk-off, rallying back from a disastrous top of the ninth to take game one against Washington State 8-7.

 298.
“The ‘80 team was the Cardiac Cats,” Hale said, referencing the 1980 National Championship team. “These guys are gonna give me a cardiac arrest.”

 299.
The previous half-inning, Arizona’s usually steady bullpen crumbled, with shutdown relievers Dawson Netz and Tony Pluta combining to allow 4 runs. It was the first earned run Netz had allowed since his March 8 appearance at USC.

 300.
“They did a really nice job of coming back,” Hale said of Washington State’s ninth-inning rally. “The walks to lead off the ninth were a tough deal.”

 301.
As the Wildcats have done so often this season, they fought back. It also didn’t hurt to have a little luck on their side.

 302.
With one out and a runner on first, Mason White smoked a 2-2 pitch to deep center field, walking out of the batter’s box as though he thought he’d hit a no-doubt home run. The ball died at the warning track, however, only to bounce out of the glove of center fielder Nate Swarts, putting runners on second and third and igniting yet another Arizona comeback.

 303.
Another pivotal moment came with two outs in the inning when Breyfogle took several close pitches to work a full-count walk and keep the game alive.

 304.
“I just say, ‘trust yourself. Trust yourself. Trust yourself,’” Breyfogle said when asked about his approach at the plate. “I just repeat it over and over in my head.”

 305.
Down a run early, the Wildcats scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on a pair of walks, an Adonys Guzman single, and a double from White off the right-center field wall. An inning later, a Tommy Splaine solo-shot to left gave Arizona a 4-1 lead. The home run ended a 14 at-bat hitless streak for Splaine.

 306.
Sophomore ace Jackson Kent struggled to limit baserunners early, allowing two walks and seven hits, five of which came in the first three innings. However, despite scoring early and loading the bases in the top of the fifth, Washington State was only able to scratch across 2 runs off Kent over his six innings pitched.

 307.
“[Washington State] did a really good job of hitting his changeup tonight,” Hale said. “Which has really been a tough pitch for most teams to hit. I don’t know if they had something on him or he was just leaving it up too much. But I thought they did a really good job against him, and he just found a way to get outs.”

 308.
Mihalakis, who’s usually the designated hitter in Arizona’s lineup, started his first games of the season at third base this weekend, filling in for an injured Richie Morales. The hero of the game, donning an Arizona Wildcats championship belt over his right shoulder, Mihalakis stayed long after Hi Corbett Field cleared out, autographing gloves for kids near the right field bleachers. It’s an experience that the sophomore described as “surreal.

 309.
“Just the fact that people know my name,” Mihalakis said. “I hear pregame, even when we’re warming up, someone say my name, and I’m like, ‘wow, they actually kinda know who I am.’”

 310.
Day 2: Saturday, April 20

 311.
Game 2: Arizona vs. Washington State at 6 p.m.

 312.
The Wildcats decided to give their head coach’s heart a much-needed break on Saturday night.

 313.
A night after the Wildcats recorded their fifth walk-off win in their last eight home games, Arizona got a lead early, added to it during the middle innings, and shut down Washington State’s bats late.

 314.
Mihalakis followed up his late-game heroics on Friday with three doubles in four at-bats. His first double tied the game. His last double broke the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh, plating Arizona’s final 2 runs in its 7-1 victory over Washington State.

 315.
Arizona starting pitcher Clark Candiotti rebounded from his shortest start of the season last week against Louisiana Tech University, pitching six innings on Saturday night. The senior allowed runners to reach scoring position in four of his six innings, surrendering five hits and three walks, but was able to limit the damage to a single earned run scored on a Cole Cramer single in the top of the fourth.

 316.
“When you’re making pitches and the defense is working for you, it gives you confidence to get the next out,” Candiotti said. “They’ve been solid all year. They’re playing better than they ever have. It’s always a confidence boost when you know you have good defense behind you.”

 317.
Arizona was able to capitalize on Washington State’s mistakes. In the bottom of the fourth, Breyfogle reached third base on a fielding error from Washington State left fielder Hartman, eventually scoring the game-tying run on a Mihalakis double. Hartman made another error in the bottom of the fifth, mishandling a Garen Caulfield double off the wall and allowing him to advance to third base. Caulfield later scored on a wild pitch in the dirt, a feat White repeated in the seventh inning.

 318.
Sidearm pitcher Casey Hintz struck out three batters and allowed only a hit in his two innings of relief. Anthony “Tonko” Susac closed out the game with two strikeouts of his own. Susac has now pitched five scoreless innings in relief since his meltdown start against New Mexico State University on March 26. Susac credits an adjustment Arizona pitching coach Kevin Vance helped him make after the New Mexico State game for his improved performance out of the pen.

 319.
“Only throw everything as hard as you can,” Susac said. “My stuff has been so much better. Not only is the fastball better, the slider’s a lot better, the change-up’s a lot better. Other stuff plays better when you throw your stuff as hard as you can. It’s also easier mentally. When you’re trying to throw as hard as you can every pitch, you have to focus a little bit more.”

 320.
White reached base three times, drawing a pair of walks and hustling out a triple on a ground ball that took a weird hop over the shoulder of Washington State first baseman Joey Kramer. Meanwhile, Brendan Summerhill went three for five at the plate, including a home run he smoked to center field in the bottom of the seventh.

 321.
Day 3: Sunday, April 21

 322.
Game 3: Arizona vs. Washington State at noon

 323.
Arizona blew two 3-run leads Sunday afternoon as the Cougars once again clawed their way back to tie the game in the ninth inning.

 324.
Yet once again, Arizona found a way to win. This time, the Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th on a pair of hit-by-pitches and an intentional walk, bringing the ever-dangerous White to the plate. On a 3-1 count, White made contact with a pitch out of the zone, singling up the middle to secure a 7-6 win and a sweep for Arizona.

 325.
“I was just trying to put the ball in play the whole time,” White said. “I wasn’t concerned about hitting out of the zone because I knew I could hit it.”

 326.
“If you’re a run producer, you might go [out of the zone a little bit],” Hale said of White’s game-winning at-bat. “But he knows he can drive it up the middle. The infield’s in. It’s a good situation. He wants to get a hit there.”

 327.
Arizona scored 6 of its 7 runs in the first four innings. When a 3-run home run from Hartman tied the game for Washington State in the top of the third, Arizona responded with a Breyfogle double to retake a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning. Breyfogle had stayed in the game after taking a 91-mph fastball to the elbow an inning prior.

 328.
“When you get hit in that one spot, it just deadens it,” Hale said. “He kept running with his arm limp, so I said, ‘hey, can you go or not?’ And finally, the feeling came back so he’ll be fine.

 329.
After giving up the 3-run homer in the third, Arizona starter Cam Walty pitched three scoreless innings to secure his fourth quality start of the season. It was sixes all around for the Senior, who finished the day with six strikeouts over six innings while surrendering six hits.

 330.
“Our starters are at least giving us five, most of the time six, sometimes seven [innings],” Hale said. “So when you start getting on those kinds of rolls, it makes your bullpen so much better.”

 331.
Things got dicey for Arizona in the top of the seventh. With the score 6-3, Eric Orloff hit two batters and gave up a single to load the bases, allowing Kyle Russel to score a run with a sac-fly to center. With two outs, Hale opted to bring in lefty reliever Bradon Zastrow for a favorable matchup against lefty Casen Taggart, to which Washington State pinch hit righty Brandham Ponce for his first plate appearance of the series. Ponce delivered with a single to center field, pulling Washington State within 1 run and putting the tying run to third. Joey Kramer, another righty, walked, bringing up yet another righty pinch-hitter, Griffen Sotomayor, who hit a weak popout to Splaine in foul ground to end the inning and allow the Wildcats to narrowly avoid disaster.

 332.
Leading 6-5 entering the top of the ninth, Kyler Heyne gave up a 3-2 leadoff liner up the middle that nearly took his head off to put the tying run on first. Washington State head coach Nathan Choate was thrown out of the game after a sacrifice bunt moved Crew Park into scoring position. With two outs, Washington State brought in their third pinch-hitter of the game, lefty Ely Kennel, to face the right-handed Heyne.

 333.
The move paid off, as Kennel worked a seven-pitch at-bat before hitting a grounder up the middle for a single, scoring Parke from second base and tying the game.

 334.
Double plays in the 10th and 11th helped hold the Cougars’ offense in check. After struggling on Friday night, Netz and Pluta pitched back-to-back scoreless innings, giving Arizona an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the 11th.

 335.
“I thought the double plays were huge,” Hale said. “The pitchers getting them was fantastic. We talked about [how hard it is] to close a game. Those same ground balls could easily bounce through on this hard infield.”

 336.
Summerhill extended his on-base streak to 32 games, going three for four with two RBIs and a run scored and improving his batting average to .366 on the season. However, he was also thrown out twice trying to take extra bases.

 337.
“The first one when he got thrown out at second I was perfectly fine with,” Hale said. “He came out of the box, saw the ball in the gap. The center fielder made a heck of a play and a heck of a throw. The other one was a hit and run. He didn’t locate the ball. When a hit and run is put on, you’re supposed to know where the ball is. It’s not a steal. So that’s a concern and we’ll have to talk about it and work at it.”

 338.
The sweep extends Arizona’s home win streak to 10 games, bringing the Wildcats’ record to 24-14 (13-5 in Pac-12) on the season and giving them sole possession of first place in the conference.

 339.
Looking ahead:

 340.
Arizona hits the road again next week, traveling to Las Cruces, New Mexico for a mid-week matchup against New Mexico State on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will then head to Seattle for a weekend series against the University of Washington.

 362.
On Sunday at 12:45 a.m., UAPD contacted a victim who stated that she entered a vehicle that she thought was her rideshare vehicle. Upon arriving at her designated location on Second Street and Vine Avenue, the driver tried to pursue physical contact with her, which escalated to unwanted touching over her clothes, according to the warning.

 363.
The victim said that when she entered her vehicle and asked the driver if he was her scheduled ride, he said that he was, even though he was not.

 364.
The suspect, who claimed to be her driver, picked the victim up in the area of Main Gate Square and drove her to her residence on Second Street and Vine Avenue. When he made advances, the victim was able to get out of the vehicle and run to a safe location.

 365.
According to the warning sent out at 3:46 p.m. Sunday, the suspect is described as a Middle Eastern male with a beard who did not speak English.

 366.
The sexual offense was described as fondling.

 367.
UAPD is actively investigating this case and, at this time, no suspects have been apprehended. They urge anyone with information about this crime, or any recent similar incidents, to contact UAPD at 520-621-8273.

 368.
If callers wish to remain anonymous, they should call 88-CRIME (520-882-7463).

 369.
Additionally, in the Clery Timely Warning, the UAPD said, “Safety is our top priority. UAPD and the Office of Public Safety remind people to never volunteer your name to rideshare drivers and ensure they have your information and are your scheduled ride before entering the vehicle.”

 370.
They also remind the community to avoid walking alone after dark, walk in well-lit areas, use alternate transportation such as the Parking & Transportation Services Night Cat, ASUA SafeRide, taxis or ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft.

 416.

The Arizona Wildcats alums Esmery Martinez and Helena Pueyo saw their dreams come to fruition as they were selected in the 2024 WNBA Draft, which was held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City on Monday, April 15.

 417.
“If you look at all of these players, none of them were super highly rated players, and they got better and improved in our system,” said Arizona head coach Adia Barnes. “It shows that we develop pros […]. The goal is to sustain success, and you want to produce pros. You want to take players that are underrated and give them the opportunity to make a team, get to the WNBA, get to a camp, get drafted, because that shows that they’ve gotten better.”

 418.
Martinez, a formidable presence on the court during her two-year stint with the Wildcats, was chosen in the second round with the 17th overall pick by the New York Liberty.

 424.
“They liked her athleticism. There aren’t a lot of forwards in this draft, and there aren’t a lot of post players available. They liked the way she can shoot the three, they like her toughness, and think she can really develop even more,” Barnes said, referring to what WNBA teams liked most about Martinez.

 425.
Pueyo, known for her defensive prowess and leadership, followed closely behind, selected with the 22nd pick by the Connecticut Sun.

 431.
“You see Helena as a freshman and you see her now, and she is a much-improved player, and it just shows her dedication and her skill development,” Barnes said.

 432.
Their selections add to the legacy of Arizona basketball in the WNBA, making them the 12th and 13th players drafted from the program. The tandem selection of Martinez and Pueyo marks a significant milestone for the Arizona women’s basketball program, being only the third time in its history that two players have been drafted in the same year.

 433.
During her time with the Wildcats, Martinez earned recognition for her defensive prowess, receiving All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention distinctions in 2023 and 2024. Notably, she was also named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team in 2024. A consistent performer, Martinez averaged 11.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game in her final season with Arizona.

 434.
Meanwhile, Pueyo solidified her place in Arizona basketball history as a defensive stalwart, setting records for career steals (312) and single-season steals (110 in the 2023-2024 season).

 435.
“The way she performed in the Pac-12 Tournament, she really stepped up a gear, and I think her stock really rose a lot because she was able to help guide [the team] to the NCAA Tournament with a really young team,” Barnes said on Pueyo’s rise in draft position.

 436.
As Martinez and Pueyo embark on their professional journeys, they join an elite group of Wildcats that have made it to the WNBA. Their selections signal not only personal achievements but also the program’s continued success in producing top-tier talent for the professional ranks.

 437.
Looking ahead, both Martinez and Pueyo will soon begin preparations for the upcoming WNBA season. Training camp commences April 28, followed by preseason games starting May 3. Final roster decisions will be made by May 13, with the season officially tipping off May 14.
