51.
Josefina Cardona-Cardona was arrested on Monday after allegedly agreeing to pay an undercover agent to kill two witnesses who were testifying in her son’s 2022 fatal stabbing case, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office announced. She now faces two counts of solicitation to commit murder and will be subject to deportation following the completion of her prosecution.

 52.
Cardona-Cardona is the mother of Manuel Marcos Cardona, who was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for a stabbing death at a birthday party in Lake Worth Beach, Florida, according to local reports.

 53.
Marcos Cardona was at a 5-year-old’s birthday party on June 22, 2022 when a fight broke out, according to the arrest report. The victim stepped in to break the fight up, but was then stabbed five times and died the following day at a local hospital.

 60.
“In April, we learned that the mother of Manuel Marcos Cardona was planning a heinous act,” the sheriff’s office said in a Tuesday statement. “Our detectives, along with undercover agents, conducted a thorough investigation, during which the defendant, Josefina Cardona-Cardona, agreed to pay an undercover agent to carry out the crime.”

 89.
Two GOP lawmakers claimed Monday to have discovered the reason why Robert Malley, President Joe Biden’s special envoy for Iran, was suspended from his role.

 90.
Pending a federal investigation, Malley was suspended without pay and had his security clearance revoked in June 2023 with little reason given as to why. Republican Idaho Sen. James Risch and Texas Rep. Mike McCaul sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday saying that their “own investigations have uncovered” that Malley was put under investigation and on leave because “he allegedly transferred classified documents to his personal email account and downloaded these documents to his personal cell phone,” according to The Washington Post.

 91.
“It is unclear to whom he intended to provide these documents, but it is believed that a hostile cyber actor was able to gain access to his email and/or phone and obtain the downloaded information,” the lawmakers wrote.

 92.
Get the hottest, most important news stories on the Internet – delivered FREE to your inbox as soon as they break! Take just 30 seconds and sign up for WND's Email News Alerts!

 93.
McCaul and Risch asked Blinken in the letter to answer a series of questions about their findings, including how many classified documents Malley was handling, whether he attempted to send them to another party, whether a “malign cyber actor” — such as the Iranian regime — gained access to his phone, and whether he has received warnings from the State Department before about his handling of classified material.

 94.
“The allegations we have been privy to are extremely troubling and demand immediate answers,” McCaul and Risch wrote in the letter to Blinken. “These allegations have substantial impact on our national security and people should be held accountable swiftly and strongly. We look forward to your immediate response.”

 95.
Though he remains on unpaid leave, Malley has not been fired from his position. He has fallen under scrutiny for having kept allies and aides in his orbit who were discovered last year to be members of the Iranian Experts Initiative (IEI), an influence program that sought to recruit Western scholars and researchers to promote Iran’s reputation and goals on a global stage. One of the members of the IEI was a senior official at the Pentagon as of October 2023.

 96.
Malley was also previously the CEO of the International Crisis Group (ICG), a global non-governmental organization, from 2018 to 2021, and had been associated with the organization for almost two decades. The ICG signed a “memorandum of understanding” with an Iranian-based think tank in 2016, but that relationship appeared to have never been disclosed to Congress.

 97.
“Under longstanding policy going back for decades, the Department does not comment on individual security clearances,” the State Department told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Nevertheless, the Department has provided Congress with relevant information on personnel inquiries relating to Iran policy. We have been and will continue to be in frequent contact with Congress on issues pertaining to Iran.”

 98.
Though Malley has yet to face legal consequences, others who have committed similar acts have been met with much more severe repercussions. Jack Teixeira, an Air National Guardsman, gained access to classified information and published it to the social media platform Discord in 2023; he was arrested later that year and took a plea agreement in March 2024 to serve 16 years in prison.

 124.
Wisconsin is one of the most fiercely contested battleground states in this election cycle, but it lacks federal transparency requirements for voter registration imposed on most states, according to a lawsuit by an election watchdog.

 125.
Minnesota, generally a solidly blue state although it saw a razor-thin margin in the results of the 2016 presidential race, also doesn’t make its voter rolls available to the public, the lawsuit contends.

 126.
Public Interest Legal Foundation, an election integrity advocacy organization, announced the litigation last week, alleging that the exemption of six states from a provision in the National Voter Registration Act violates the principle of equal state sovereignty.

 128.
“No state should be exempt from transparency,” J. Christian Adams, president of Public Interest Legal Foundation, said in a written statement. “All states should be treated equally under the law and no exemption should allow certain election officials to hide documents relating to voter list maintenance activities.”

 129.
In 1993, Congress passed the National Voter Registration Act, better known as the “Motor Voter Law,” which allows Americans to register to vote when they get a driver’s license.

 130.
The federal law also requires states to update voter registration lists to ensure that dead people or those who have left a jurisdiction no longer are listed.

 131.
For accountability, the law says that states must “make available for public inspection and, where available photocopying at a reasonable cost, all records concerning the implementation of programs and activities conducted for the purpose of ensuring the accuracy and currency of official lists of eligible voters.”

 132.
However, Congress carved out an exception to the transparency requirement for seven states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Idaho, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Maine, and Wyoming.

 133.
The reason was that the seven states offered same-day voter registration or, in the case of North Dakota, didn’t require voter registration.

 134.
After briefly stopping same-day voter registration, Maine lost its exemption from the disclosure provision of the federal law.

 135.
The new complaints, filed in two federal courts, contend that the exemptions from U.S. law violate the principle of equal state sovereignty by treating the remaining states differently.

 136.
Public Interest Legal Foundation is suing Minnesota and Wisconsin first.

 137.
“This lawsuit is the first step to bringing the National Voter Registration Act’s transparency requirements to all 50 states,” Adams said.

 138.
The Wisconsin lawsuit names Wisconsin Election Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe as the defendant. The Minnesota litigation names Secretary of State Steve Simon as the defendant.

 139.
A Wisconsin Election Commission spokesperson declined comment for this report, but pointed to the applicable portion of state law, which says the commission and local governments can decide the cost of obtaining voter information.

 140.
“The commission shall establish by rule the fee for obtaining a copy of the official registration list, or a portion of the list. … The amount of the fee shall be set, after consultation with county and municipal election officials,” a portion of the law says.

 141.
The Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office didn’t respond to a request for comment from The Daily Signal.

 142.
The litigation cites the Supreme Court case of Shelby County v. Holder, in which the high court reaffirmed that all states enjoy equal sovereignty and determined that if Congress treats states differently, it must be “sufficiently related to the problem [the statute] targets” and must “make sense in light of current conditions.”

 143.
Public Interest Legal Foundation’s complaints argue that Minnesota and Wisconsin grant and remove voting rights through voter registration and maintenance of that voter list. So, they argue, Congress’ goal of making the process transparent should apply to both states.

 144.
Thirteen of the 20 states that offer same-day voter registration are still subject to the federal transparency requirements, the litigation notes.

 170.
Former Vice President Mike Pence’s group Advancing American Freedom (AAF) is sending a memo to congressional offices on Wednesday praising the Trump-era tax cuts, the Daily Caller News Foundation first learned.

 171.
AAF is sending the memo, obtained by the DCNF, to every congressional office arguing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) grew household income and lowered marginal tax rates. Many of the TCJA’s provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025, while the Senate has yet to take action on a bipartisan tax deal passed by the House earlier this year.

 172.
“The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provided the greatest tax relief for hard working Americans since the Reagan Administration. Despite doom and gloom projections from the media, the data is clear: American families won,” AAF Chairman Marc Short told the DCNF in a statement. “TCJA delivered more dollars into the pockets of American families than ever before while growing the economy, increasing federal revenues, and delivering a corporate tax rate more competitive with other global developed economies.”

 174.
The Republican-controlled House passed the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 back in January, which was negotiated between GOP House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith and Democratic Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden.

 175.
Individual tax rates are set to increase anywhere from 1% to 4% depending on income level in 2025 if the TCJA expires, according to the memo, which cites data from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

 176.
Household income increased by 8.5% during the first two years of the TCJA’s enactment, but declined by 2.5% between 2020 and 2022, according to the memo.

 179.
The memo emphasizes that the TCJA has increased tax revenue to levels higher than the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicted because reduced rates have yielded “more economic activity.” Annual tax revenue increased by $1.1 trillion from 2018 to 2023 — a 33% bump.

 180.
“Today, annual tax revenue has never been higher, but President Biden and Congress have continued to increase deficits by spending taxpayer dollars without restraint,” Short added. “Now, President Biden has promised a $3.3 trillion tax increase by allowing TCJA to expire and raising the corporate rate which will again send American jobs overseas.”

 181.
The TCJA also resulted in corporations paying 41% more in taxes, according to the memo, which notes that “progressives argue that we need to increase taxes for corporations to ‘pay their fair share.'”

 182.
The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 would reform and expand the child tax credit until 2025. While the legislation passed the lower chamber with bipartisan support, it has since stalled in the Senate.

Ron Wyden is aiming to attach the package as an amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization measure that could be considered this week.

 210.
Despite assurances from President Joe Biden’s administration, the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) new rule for healthcare providers could end up forcing religious hospitals and doctors to perform child sex-change procedures, legal experts told the DCNF.

 211.
The rule, which HHS issued on April 26 under the Affordable Care Act, bars healthcare and insurance providers who receive federal funding from denying care due to a patient’s gender identity or sexual orientation. While HHS claimed that the rule “respects” federal protections for religious freedom, legal experts told the DCNF that the rule will likely force religious healthcare providers to choose between their faith and providing procedures they object to, such as sex-change surgeries for minors.

 212.
Florida filed a lawsuit Tuesday against HHH, arguing that the rule would “force Florida to violate its own law” prohibiting hormone treatments and gender surgeries for minors.

 214.
“Biden and his federal bureaucrats are trying to go around our child-protection law to force the state to pay for puberty blockers and gender-transition surgery for children,” Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said in a statement.

 215.
The rule is an expansion of a similar provision during the Obama administration, which was then removed in June 2020 during former President Donald Trump’s term in office. Healthcare providers cannot “deny or limit health services, including those that have been typically or exclusively provided to, or associated with, individuals of one sex, to an individual based upon the individual’s sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or gender otherwise recorded.”

 216.
Additionally, the rule removed some protections for religious groups by requiring HHS to approve religious exemption requests on a case-by-case basis, instead of providing more blanket coverage such as in Title IX, which provides religious exemptions for all educational organizations controlled by a religious entity. HHS argued in the final rule that including similar language to Title IX would “undermine” the purpose of the guidance and prevent people from accessing care.

 217.
However, the new guidance will likely be used as a “backdoor entry to a hard-left liberal wish list,” according to Sarah Parshall Perry, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies.

 218.
“Just as it’s done with Title IX of the Education Amendment, the Biden administration has now turned any hospital that receives federal funding, into an elective abortion clinic or gender-‘affirming’ care clinic,” Parshall Perry told the DCNF. “How? By expanding the definition of ‘sex’ to include gender identity – something that’s incorporated into the text of 1557 by Biden’s nefarious Title IX rule.”

 219.

 220.
#BREAKING: The Biden Admin just decreed that doctors nationwide must perform gender transitions or suffer federal penalties: https://t.co/oDfqCfAw3X. This scheme is bad for patients, bad for religious liberty, and illegal.

 221.
— Luke Goodrich (@LukeWGoodrich) April 26, 2024

 222.

 223.
Parshall Perry also noted that the department’s failure to provide stronger protections for religious providers was telling and encouraged medical professionals to “buckle up.”

 224.
“In its initial press release on the rule, HHS said it will make a ‘case-by-case’ determination about any applicable religious liberty or conscience protections,” Parshall Perry told the DCNF. “HHS notes that a ‘case-by-case approach to such determinations . . . will allow it to account for any harm an exemption could have on third parties.’ So a word of advice to religiously affiliated hospitals, clinics, or medical professionals—buckle up. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

 225.
When the rule was first proposed in 2022, 20 attorneys general, headed by Jonathan Skrmetti of Tennessee, sent a letter to the department, expressing concerns about the lack of protections for religious medical professionals. The attorneys general argued that the rule would chill “the exercise of religion” by forcing the companies and providers to “justify” their exemptions and prevent religious providers from serving “minority and other underserved and low-income populations.”

 226.
“There’s not a clear, bright line if you’re a religious organization with an objection to this, unlike what older versions and Title IX had,” Justin Butterfield, the deputy general counsel at First Liberty Institute and formerly the senior advisor for Conscience and Religious Freedom at HHS, told the DCNF. “It requires these providers to explain what their religious beliefs are and see if the government agrees with them.”

 227.
Doreen Denny, a senior advisor for Concerned Women for America, told the DCNF that if religious providers are forced to go to court they will have the testimony of “whistleblowers” and evidence from recent studies “proving these procedures don’t help” to strengthen their case.

 228.
A federal appeals court ruled in December 2022 that President Joe Biden’s administration could not force private hospitals to perform sex-change operations after several Catholic healthcare groups and medical centers filed a lawsuit in 2016 over a similar rule. Butterfield told the DCNF that at the end of the day, the real concern was the “different priorities” of the current administration.

 229.
“This administration has different priorities than previous administrations and unfortunately, a lot of times people of faith are the losers in that,” Butterfield said. “There’s less interest in providing the protections for religious objections than we’ve had historically.”

 230.
HHS did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Now, a team of international researchers has shown that adding folic acid to salt could prevent birth defects, too.

 252.
Folate is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Currently, the World Health Organization recommends that all women take a supplement containing 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, starting when they’re trying to conceive and through the first three months of pregnancy.

 253.
Folic acid and folate aren’t the same thing, although the terms are used interchangeably. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, while the latter is what is naturally occurring in food. Folate can be found in dark leafy greens and beef liver. Folic acid is found in most supplements and food products and has been shown to prevent neural tube defects in prior studies.

 275.
Researcher Ryan Burge, an associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University who publishes articles on a Substack called "Graphs About Religion," shared data Thursday about the beliefs of Catholics in the U.S., focusing on their views on abortion, capital punishment and euthanasia.

 276.
Burge attributed the motivation to conduct the research to comments made by Cardinal Wilton Gregory of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, who referred to President Joe Biden as a "cafeteria Catholic" during an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" on March 31.

 296.
(STUDY FINDS) -- When you fire up the stove to whip up a tasty meal, you’re probably not thinking about the tiny particles swirling around your kitchen. But according to a new study, the process of cooking – especially dishes that involve frying or sautéing – releases brown carbon aerosols that could be impacting indoor air quality and ultimately, your health.

 297.
So what exactly are these brown carbon aerosols? Essentially, they are microscopic particles that are released into the air from the incomplete combustion of organic matter, like the oils and fats used in cooking. They get their name from their ability to absorb light, giving them a brownish hue. While these particles are too small to see with the naked eye, when they build up, they can contribute to indoor air pollution.

 298.
In this study, published in the journal Environmental Science: Atmospheres, researchers from the University of British Columbia set out to investigate whether these cooking-related brown carbon aerosols, which they dubbed “BrCOA”, could produce harmful compounds when exposed to indoor lighting. Specifically, they looked at the production of singlet oxygen – a highly reactive form of oxygen that can damage cells and tissues in the body.

 318.
(STUDY FINDS) -- The next time you spray a disinfectant, you might want to consider how much you’re contributing to the air pollution in your own home. A new study finds common household products release nanoparticles — grains of engineered material so small they’re invisible to the human eye. Moreover, just walking through that same room stirs up these potentially harmful particles, which people breathe in.

 319.
Nanoparticles range between one and 100 nanometers. To put it into context, a nanometer is one billionth of a meter. The human eye can only see particles greater than approximately 50,000 nanometers. A single sheet of office paper is 100,000 nanometers thick.

 320.
When household sprays such as disinfectants, cleaners, sunscreens, hair sprays, cosmetic mists, and powders are used, study authors say residual nanoparticles stick to carpet fibers and floors. They are also suspended three to five feet in the air. That means children would be more likely to inhale nanoparticles since they are closer to the floor.

 340.
(STUDY FINDS) -- Picture this: You’re hopping into your car on a sweltering summer day, ready to crank up the AC and hit the road. But did you know that as you sink into your seat, you might be exposing yourself to a group of chemicals called flame retardants? A new study suggests that these compounds, often added to vehicle interiors to meet safety standards, could be silently seeping into the air you breathe inside your car.

 341.
Flame retardants are a bit like the unsung heroes of fire safety. They’re added to all sorts of products, from electronics to furniture, with the intention of slowing down or preventing the spread of flames in the event of a fire. In vehicles, they’re used to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 302, which has been in place since the 1970s. The problem is that many of these chemicals don’t stay put in the materials they’re added to.

 342.
You see, a lot of flame retardants are what scientists call “semi-volatile.” This means that they can easily transition from a solid state (like the foam in your car seat) to a gas that ends up in the air. According to this new research, led by scientists at Duke University and the Green Science Policy Institute, the hotter it gets, the more these chemicals are released.
