53. <p>Thank you so much to Leigh for joining me today to answer a few questions about her novel.</p>
54. <p><strong>What has the response been to your title, Fat Girl?</strong></p>
55. <p>A little of everything. From, “Hm&#8230;interesting, I wonder what that’s about” to “You’re not really going to call your book that, are you?” Yeah, I really am. Fat is an adjective that offends because we give the word so much power. Unfortunately, most women, regardless of size, have a fat girl who lives inside her. It’s the voice that tells us we’re not skinny enough or perfect enough. Fat Girl is a romance, but it’s also a story about self acceptance.</p>
56. <p><strong>How were the main characters first born?</strong></p>
57. <p>They just came to me. As weird as that sounds, that’s the way it is for me. The stories, the characters, take root in my imagination and flow from there. I guide some of it, because my imagination can quickly spin out of control. But for the most part, I go with the flow.</p>
58. <p><strong>So going with the flow, I understand that you went on a journey with Dee and Mick and their story lead you down unexpected paths. What surprised you most about following their (fictional) hearts?</strong></p>
59. <p>That was the fun of it, not knowing exactly where the characters would lead me. Without spoiling any of the plots, I guess what surprised me the most was how profoundly their childhood demons impacted their relationship (both their teenage relationship and their adult one). And the decisions they made; good and bad, right and wrong. There’s this great quote from the movie, Hope Floats: “Childhood is what you spend the rest of your life overcoming.” That definitely plays out in Dee and Mick’s relationship.</p>
60. <p><strong>How do you relate to the main heroine, Dee? What parts do you not identify with?</strong></p>
61. <p>I understand her struggles with weight, food and body image. I get what it’s like not to feel beautiful or lovable, regardless of how much love I had around me. However, it did not have the same impact in my life that it’s had in Dee’s. She’s much more reserved and skittish than I am. She closed herself off to others for a long time and lived in a shadow. I’m out there. I have tried hard not to let body issues impact the quality of my life or relationships. Self acceptance is still a journey&#8230;but I’ve gotten to a pretty good place.</p>
62. <p><strong>What do you hope readers take away from your book?</strong></p>
63. <p>On the entertainment side, I hope readers will find Fat Girl, steamy and romantic with relatable, well-developed characters and interesting plots. On a deeper level, I hope readers will learn through Dee’s fictional journey that there is no one size that makes you beautiful, sexy, lovable or worthy.</p>

93. <p><strong>1) What am I working on? </strong>I&#8217;m plotting two projects at the moment: the third and final instalment of the What Kills Me series and a stand-alone psychological thriller set in a high school.</p>
94. <p><strong>2) How does my work differ from others of its genre? </strong>Readers have told me that the What Kills Me series breathes fresh life (so to speak) into the vampire genre. I didn&#8217;t try to make it unique. I wanted to write a superhero&#8217;s journey, an adventure novel about a normal girl thrown into the most extraordinary circumstances.</p>
95. <p><strong>3) Why do I write what I do?</strong> I was obsessed with supernatural and horror novels when I was a teenager. I used to wait months for new releases of Christopher Pike books, devour them in a few hours and be upset that I had to wait for the next. I figured that when I grew up, I could torture teenagers the same way.</p>
96. <p><strong>4) How does my writing process work? </strong>For What Kills Me, I imagined key scenes throughout the story. A girl crawling out of a well covered in blood. A fight scene in a Taipei alley. A spectacular and shocking conclusion. I see my books very cinematically; I have moments that I see very clearly in my mind.</p>
97. <p>Plotting allows me to plan for twists. It allows me to see where I can put in red herrings, moments of irony, and foreshadowing. Plus, What Kills Me is the first of a series. Since I’ve plotted parts of Part Three, I know what bread crumbs to leave in Part One to lead up.</p>

I listen to all sorts of things, including <a href="http://songza.com/listen/in-a-quiet-park-songza/" target="_blank">park noises</a>, ocean waves, action movie scores. I often write in coffee shops so the soundtrack drowns out the outside noise and gets me in the mood.</p>

331. <p>I asked Rachel three important questions about the conclusion to her series.</p>
332. <div><strong>1. What is the hardest thing about writing a trilogy?</strong><br />
333. There are a couple of things that make writing a trilogy difficult. The first is keeping everything straight. You really have to pay attention to what you wrote in the first book and make sure it&#8217;s consistent through all of them. It can also be difficult to make sure each novel is exciting and full of tension, yet isn&#8217;t repeating the same conflicts. You have to think of new, realistic scenarios to put your character through and still have these events driving the plot forward.</div>

335. <div><strong>2. Of all three books, which is your favorite?</strong></div>
336. <div>Can I have two favorites? I loved Fractured Soul because it showed Llona fighting her dark side. I like books that explore man&#8217;s dual nature and how the two are in constant battle with each other. However, I loved Fractured Soul because this is where Llona really discovers who she is and the power she has inside her. I also like the romance in this book more than any of the others.</div>

338. <div><strong>3. What&#8217;s next?</strong></div>
339. <div>Before the year is up, I will have another book released. It&#8217;s a paranormal young adult titled UNLEASHED. It&#8217;s much darker than the Fractured Light series and focuses on man&#8217;s dual nature. Basically it&#8217;s a YA version of Jekyl and Hyde. After that I plan to release a dystopian YA called THE ORIGINAL, which is currently in the editing phases.</div>

All she needs is to find and destroy the Shadow—the ultimate source of dark power. Entitled, <strong>Die-Hard Fashion: Style in Wynne Channing’s I Am Forever</strong>, I talked about how I wanted the clothing to be part of the story; I wanted it to reflect the emotions of the characters or their evolution. Here are a number of images that I pinned and how they inspired the wardrobe in Book Two.<span id="more-989"></span></p>
438. <p>The vampire Monarchy is all about appearances so what they wear is super important. Dressing the Monarchy is an exercise in excess. They’re all about bling, glitz and glamour. They don&#8217;t dress for comfort so their wardrobes are creative and bold and out-there.</p>

Because that&#8217;s how she feels, especially since everyone is staring at her all of the time slack-jawed.</p>

It becomes more of a reflection of her humanity. But for her unveiling ceremony, she had to look “god-like.” I put Zee in head-to-toe gems. I wanted the other vampires to look upon her as this shining figure — I wanted them to bow in awe.</p>

She&#8217;s sleek. Sexy. She&#8217;s a beautiful poisonous snake (and I put her in a snakeskin suit for the final scene. When she first meets Zee, she wears a gauzy white dress to soften her look. But mostly, the Empress’s wardrobe is a reflection of the leader that she is. She wears metallics to symbolize armor. She also mixes sultry body-hugging and revealing silhouettes with more masculine pant-suits.</p>
