  231. move the business needle away from short-term profit driven returns
  232. toward true returns benefiting people and the planet for the long run.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;My
  233. passion for protecting the planet and championing the green economy was
  234. kick-started after I received a telephone call from Al Gore. He wanted
  235. to show me his stunning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. His poignant
  236. and elegant account of these issues really struck a chord with me as an
  237. interested non-expert.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;As a big buyer of fuel for our transport
  238. businesses, we are very aware of the damage that oil and its greenhouse
  239. gas emissions are doing to the environment. Nevertheless, the transport
  240. industry has done a tremendous amount of good as well, connecting people
  241. and uniting our planet. I envision for my grandchildren a world where
  242. transport is more accessible than it has ever been, but more
  243. environmentally-friendly as well. We hope Virgin Galactic will be at the
  244. centre of this, with point-to-point space travel a possibility for the
  245. generations to come.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Our airlines are bringing together the
  246. industry and encouraging the main players to reduce carbon emissions
  247. across their operations. This involves investing in new efficient planes
  248. and engines, as well as developing sustainable, low carbon aviation
  249. biofuels.  I believe the future will see clean fuels produced from
  250. materials like isobutanol, which will power planes without omitting
  251. carbon. The healthy spirit of competition will move the industry towards
  252. cleaner aviation.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Additionally, Virgin is tackling the barriers
  253. to carbon reduction by overseeing a $25 million prize (The Virgin Earth
  254. Challenge), which is looking for scalable, sustainable ways of removing
  255. greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. We hope one day somebody will win
  256. this most difficult challenge by coming up with a way of extracting the
  257. equivalent of Europe&#39;s total yearly carbon emissions. The winner of the
  258. prize will potentially save the world from all the consequences of
  259. global warming - by far the most important thing any individual could
  260. achieve.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;I am also inspired by the work Virgin Unite has done
  261. with Nelson Mandela to help bring together a group of global leaders
  262. called The Elders, who work independently to resolve conflict and human
  263. rights issues. It is this ethos of collaboration and innovation which is
  264. at the core of my vision for not only my grandchildren but the
  265. grandchildren of us all.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;We are so pleased our children, Holly
  266. and Sam, have embraced this philosophy and are working hard to bring
  267. about positive change. Sam has set up a film production company called
  268. Sundog Pictures, which uses the medium of film to inspire and engage
  269. people on the issues he is passionate about, with films such as
  270. ‘Breaking the Taboo&#39; bringing the failed war on drugs to many people&#39;s
  271. attention. Meanwhile Holly has thrown herself into supporting Free the
  272. Children, set up her own charity, The Big Change Charitable Trust, and
  273. devotes a lot of her time to Virgin Unite.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;It makes me proud to
  274. see my children carving out their own path and using the fortunate
  275. position they are in to help other people. To know that these values
  276. will remain in place after I eventually go (not too soon I hope!) makes
  277. me feel very comfortable about the legacy I will be leaving. This ethos
  278. is visible across the younger generation, who are becoming increasingly
  279. socially and environmentally-conscious.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Put simply, the kind of
  280. world I would like to leave my grandchildren is a better one. I hope all
  281. our efforts and initiatives  will start a chain reaction that will
  282. filter through the generations to come and positively influence the
