49.
There is NO federal law that makes the act of wagering online with an offshore sportsbook illegal. The only federal law that addresses gambling is the wire act from the 1960's which makes it illegal to place wagers via the telephone. And, the US government passed a port security law that tacked on provisions (UIGEA) which makes it illegal for BANKS, not players, to fund or accept payment from "illegal" gaming sources. The only problem (for the government) is that there are dozens of third party methods available for funding and no way to trace ACH credits. Another problem for the DOJ is that they qualified the online gambling statement with "illegal online gambling" yet failed to define "illegal online gambling". There is no law that speaks to online gambling so UIGEA refers to no specific activity. In other words, the new provisions are only for show, a meager attempt to turn the banks into law enforcement agencies, and the end result is a waste of ink. I still use my VISA check card and e-check on my favorite sites. Online gaming will be impossible to completely eliminate from the US. The offshore gaming sites contend that since the wagers are being placed on their servers that the actual wagering is occurring outside of the USA, thus making the enforcement of any anti-gaming legislation impossible. The best they can do is make it inconvenient. Eventually I see the industry being regulated and taxed.
50.
51. However, there are a few states with laws directed towards online wagering: Michigan, Illinois, Louisiana, Oregon, Wisconsin, Washington, Indiana, Nevada, New York, New Jersey and South Dakota. Although these states do have specific laws pertaining to online gaming, there has not been any charges brought forth because those laws are vague and those laws are currently being challenged.
52.
53. Some sites have decided, on their own, to stop accepting American players. These are the publicly traded companies and most have returned to private owners. All of the sites that have been prosecuted have been for accepting wagers from Americans WHILE being based on US soil! It has nothing to do with off-shore online gambling. There are still many highly reputable sites that welcome and cater to American clients.
55. Answer #2 (re: baseball question)
56. The odds that are listed as +150 or -150 are 'american' style. This simply means that they are based on $100. When you see the number displayed as a (+) positive number it signifies how much you will win if you RISK $100. For an example you have odds listed as +150 so if you risk $100 then you will win $150 for a total return of $250. If the number is listed as a (-) negative number it signifies how much you must RISK in order to WIN $100. So if you see -150, then you must RISK $150 in order to win $100 for a total return of $250. For MLB games the spread, or Runline, is still 1.5 runs the negative number simply means that is the payout. In the UK you will see something like 10/11 or .900 it's just a different way to express the odds.

This info is shared by a few head groundskeepers at professional sports stadiums. Notice the procedure that is used for the pitching mound and battersbox areas. Did you know that there are bricks patterned and buried in those areas on major league fields? Best of luck with your goal of becoming a professional groundskeeper!
279.

 280. [display_name id=”2″]

 281.
The bookmaker makes money by taking a certain portion of the money that is bet (usually 5 to 10 percent). This take is called the vigorish (also known as “the vig”, or “the juice”). The profit made has nothing to do with the actual odds that a particular team will win (or beat the spread).
282.
283. Going into spreads and money lines can be a little confusing, so let's start with something more familiar, which will demonstrate how bookies make money.
284.
285. Let's say I offered 200 people the opportunity bet $1.00 on the flip of a coin, which has a fifty-fifty chance of coming up heads. But let's say that 150 people bet on heads, and only 50 people bet on tails. As a bookmaker, I would tell the people that if you bet on heads, you will only win $0.30 if heads comes up. However, if you bet on tails, you will win $2.90 if tails comes up.
286.
287. If heads comes up, I pay the 150 winners $1.30 each (their original wager of $1.00 plus the $0.30 they won), for a total of $195. If tails comes up, I pay the 50 winners $3.90 each (their original wager of $1.00 plus the $2.90 they won) for a total of $195. Either way, I keep the extra $5.00. As unfair as that might sound, it is exactly what bookmakers do. The favorite is not necessarily the team who is most likely to win, but is the team who is most heavily bet on.
288.
289. Now, to add complexity, let’s discuss the money lines… Typically, the two teams will be listed, with a positive number next to one team and a negative number next to the other team. This is called the money line. The team with the negative number is the favorite. Let's use the coin flipping example above to present a money line:

 290.
Heads -340
291. Tails +290

 292.
What this means is that if you want to make $100 when heads comes up, you will have to bet (approximately) $340 on heads. However, if you want to make $290 if tails comes up, you will only have to bet $100 on tails. So basically, the negative number represents how much you have to bet in order to win $100, and the positive number represents how much you will win if you bet $100.

 293.
Bookies know that this is somewhat confusing to most people, and that many people aren't willing to do the math in their head to figure it all out. That is why most sports books offer spreads as an alternative to money lines.A spread is basically the same thing, except that you can count on an almost even money bet if you beat the spread. That is, if you see:

 294.
Redskins -9
295. Cowboys +9

 296.
that means that the redskins are favored by 9 points. Regardless of who you bet on, you will almost double your money if you win. I say "almost", because the bookie still takes the vigorish (a cut of the money).

 297.
The early odds are set by expert oddsmakers. They analyze a game and try to determine who is going to win and by how much. However, the final odds are actually determined by bettors. If the early spread is 9 (like in the example above), and all of the sudden people start betting heavily on the cowboys, the bookie will change the spread to 8, and to 7, and eventually to whatever number they need to make sure that they have collected an equal amount of wagers on each of the teams. That way, no matter who wins, the bookie will have enough to pay the winners and himself.

 298.
I hope this has helped answer your questions. Now, I have a question for you? Would you be interested in learning more about a great Sports Betting System?

 350.
The odds at each site is different depending on the action that they get. A sports book will change a point spread, money line, or payout depending on how much action they have on one side. You might see a -120 on an opening over under for Washington/Pittsburgh (NHL) at 5.5 on one site, and see another over under open at 5 (-105 Over) at another site. It depends really on what the customers are betting on at each site! Sports books make the most money when they have equal action on both sides. You should consider shopping around for the lines instead of trying to stick to just one.

 405. These are my personal set of general “Do’s & Don’ts” for gambling on the internet:
406.
407. The “Do’s”:

 408.
· This actually applies to all forms of gambling… Only bet (spend) what you can afford to lose. Gambling is risky. You can lower the odds that you will lose or raise the odds that you will win but there is always the possibility that you will lose. You have to be able to literally say “Oh Well, No Big Deal” after you lose and walk away (at least for the time being) without it severely impacting you emotionally or financially. Look at it another way – Let’s say you are going to go on a date and you expect to spend $100 that evening (I know… cheap date, eh? LOL). You expected to spend that $100 and when you go home at the end of the evening, that $100 was spent (maybe even a little more). When you gamble, you expect to spend $100 and, when it is gone, your expectation was met. You go into it with that attitude and you won’t be severely disappointed that you lost and you will be pleasantly surprised if you have more than $100 when you stop gambling.

 409.
· Set a limit on both your acceptable loss (low) and your profits (high). Know when to walk away. If you are losing and the loss goes below your low limit, walk away without hesitation. Correspondingly, when you have reached a certain preset amount of profit, you should consider walking away. Why? No matter how much we want to believe that we can’t lose or the lucky streak will never end – it will. And trust me when I tell you that when you have won a certain amount but start losing again, you will keep playing to try and get back to that level of profit you were at once again… unless you learn to stop while you are ahead. Constantly reevaluate that low and reset it when necessary. For example, let’s say that your original high and low was a profit of $200 (plus) and a loss of $100 (negative) respectively. While playing, you hit a jackpot and are already profiting by $500 now. That is now $600 more than your original acceptable low of losing $100, and $300 more than your original profit ceiling (high). I mentioned (above) that you should consider walking away but you considered it and don’t want to walk away. Then, you should change your low and high limits to something like a low of +$250 and a high of +$750. Now, here is the kicker – it is OK to keep playing, keep reevaluating, and keep changing your limits when you are winning. It is NOT OK to keep changing those limits when you are losing – that is a sure-fire recipe for disaster where you end up losing more than you can financially afford to lose.

 410.
· Seek help if you believe you have a problem with gambling (e.g. an addiction). There are many places available that can help you and you can find those on the internet just as easily as you found the online gaming site you have been playing on. Just “Google” it!

 411.
The “Don’ts”:

 412.
· My number one rule when gambling online or offline is – DON’T DRINK WHILE GAMBLING! Those limits you set will be gone. Your mental edge is gone. And, sooner or later, your money is gone!

 413.
· Don’t borrow or lend money when it comes to gambling. When the money is not yours, you don’t tend to care as much and your betting habits are looser than when you are playing with your own money. You may not think that you would play anything any differently and you can tell yourself whatever you want (like “I wouldn’t do that”) but you do. If you don’t believe me try it sometime. Play with someone who knows you well and what you would play / bet on verses what you would not – do it with a small amount that you can afford to cover when (notice I didn’t say if?) you lose. When done, ask that person if they think you played any differently… you will be surprised. With your own money, you might not chase that inside straight or flush to the river while playing poker. And you wouldn’t play that 7/4 when raised in the blind. With someone else’s money, you will find some way of justifying it like “I had 12 outs”, “The Odds Were In My Favor”, or “They were suited” (my personal favorite). As a lender, pretty much count that money gone and good luck on getting it back (even if they won). Now, let me just say that I do have some friends that simply don’t have the money to gamble. Every once in a while, I “loan&quot them some money because I want them to have some fun and I enjoy their companionship while playing together at the tables or slot machines but it wasn’t really a loan – I never expect it back.

 414.
· Don’t gamble when you are emotionally down (sad or depressed) – I personally battle with depression every day and have learned (over many years) to recognize when I am depressed. Trust me when I tell you this… when you are sad or depressed, you do not care as much about losing. When you are sad or depressed, you expect to lose. And, when you lose, your expectation was met and you don’t mind sinking more money into losing. Stay away from all forms of gambling when you are in a funk and, as a personal aside, alcohol really doesn’t help either.

 415.
Those are my three big “Do’s&quot and “Don’ts&quot but there are several others that you learn as time goes by, especially “Do’s&quot and “Don’ts&quot for specific games.
