9.
10. The New Orleans Pelican logo has been released. It is an angry, angry bird.
11.
12. Here is what it looks like:
13. Color me a little disappointed, and this is from someone that truly likes the new “Pelicans” name. We’ll get to that batch of disappointment later, though, because firstly we should let the soon-to-be former New Orleans Hornets describe why they did what they did with the new Pelicans logo.
14.
15. The team’s website points out that the lettering in the logo was inspired by street signs that dot the city’s French Quarter. The team will retain the very NOLA-ish Fleur de Lys symbol both in the main logo (up top) and in an alternate logo that replaces the head and beak of the bird inside the flower. The blue in the logo stands for the state of Louisiana, the gold represents the glittery nature of the city of New Orleans, and the team’s summation for choosing the color red bled down to, basically, calling the color very scary.
16.
17. Pelicans, as Deadspin put it a few weeks ago in their inimitable way, are scary. These are birds of prey that are to be feared, and not mocked. Better yet, the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana has long made the pelican a symbol of their city and state. It was the name of the city’s heralded minor league baseball team for decades, and the bird’s resiliency in popping back from the endangered species list (pelican population dwindled in the latter half of the 20th century due to poisoning from pesticides such as DDT) and the Gulf Coast oil spill of 2010 makes the bird a perfect symbol for a team that is attempting to overcome quite a bit.
18.
19. We applaud the change in team name. Even if the origin of the Hornets nickname, derived from the words of a frustrated English general fighting the colonists in the Revolutionary War, is just as cool.
20.
21.
22. What is less impressive is the actual bird in the logo. It’s pretty peeved, as you can tell; and while we weren’t expecting a cartoonish logo to have fun with (probably in response to what was a less than enthusiastic response to news of the name change from late in 2012, by those who were unaware of the bird’s instincts and relationship to the area), this new logo feels like something the Golden State Warriors would have come out with in 1997.
23.
24. Nobody in Wild Tchoupitoulas garb had to be dunking a basketball into a pelican gullet in our hopes for the new logo, nothing silly like that, but we were hoping for something that at once represented both New Orleans’ resiliency, and insistence on pulling a tuba out to play at someone’s funeral.
25.
26. Basically, the designers didn’t need to make the pelican in its New Orleans Pelican logo look angry. The team will take care of all the aggressive parts itself, as will the real life pelicans that will freaking dive out of the air to stab their prey. You don’t need to make it cool, or streamlined, or impressive. (Courtesy nba.com/hornets)
27.
28. Because both the city of New Orleans, and the pelican itself, are impressive enough. They are at once tough enough, potent enough, and triumphant enough. And if you think I’m diving too far down in order to talk about a new basketball team’s logo, well, forget you man – pelicans are cool.
29.

  30.

  31.
32.
33. The team's alternate logos (nba.com/hornets)
34. We had our own lighthearted fun last spring when it was announced that the team was considering a name change, we hoped the pelican in this Pelican logo would represent as much. Oh well. The name is cool enough, the team is young and fun and best of all staying in New Orleans for the long haul. That’s more than enough good news for now.
35.
36. And we’ll always have this screenshot of the former New Orleans Hornets’ official website, when their countdown to Pelican launch went hilariously awry:
37.

  59. expectations of a bigger beat that investors have grown accustomed to.
  60. iPhone and iPads were decent but Macs missed materially. Its outlook was

  82.
83. 87.
88. The DV300F builds on the success of Samsung’s popular DualView line and includes a 1.5-inch LCD on the front of the camera to assist in self-portraiture, or keep children focused while capturing memories, thanks to colorful animations to draw their attention. It’s also the first model in the DualView line to integrate wireless technology for instant storage and sharing on Facebook, Picasa, PhotoBucket and YouTube.
89. “Both the DV300F and WB150F cameras take such impressive pictures that people will want to share them immediately – and with integrated wireless features, they’ll be able to do just that,” said Reid Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Digital Imaging, Samsung Electronics America. “Now, photographers don’t have to compromise. They get the benefits of a great digital camera – including optical zoom, high quality image sensors, true flash and image stabilization – along with the connectivity they expect.”
90. Advanced Wireless Features
91. With the wireless capabilities included in both the new Samsung WB150F and DV300F cameras, sharing is quicker and easier than ever. From any Wi-Fi hotspot, users can email photos, or share them on social networks such as Facebook and Picasa or post videos to YouTube in a few simple steps.
92. The new login browser featured on the WB150F and other SMART camera models, makes it possible for users to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot in hotels, airports, coffee shops or other locations which may require visiting a landing page before gaining access to an internet connection.
93. Connect to the Samsung Ecosystem
94. The new Smart Cameras also interface with Samsung’s line of Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, PCs, tablets and smartphones, creating a truly unique and integrated ecosystem.
95. The WB150F and DV300F cameras support Remote Viewfinder features, allowing users to remotely control the camera’s shutter, zoom and flash from the palm of their hand, using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet.
96. Samsung TV Link allows the new Smart Cameras to connect to a TV or Blu-ray player without wires – so photos and movies can be shared and enjoyed on the biggest TV on the house.
97. The Samsung Mobile Link application makes it a snap for users to transfer photos from the camera directly to a supported phone or tablet, using a free app available for download in the Android marketplace. Further, the new Smart Cameras support WiFi Direct technology for peer-to-peer transfers with any Samsung Galaxy device – no wireless router required.
98. The Auto Backup function easily manages users’ photo transfers by quickly and securely connecting the camera wirelessly to their PC – no need for clumsy USB cables or fumbling with memory cards.
99. Microsoft® Sky Drive® Cloud services are also integrated into the new models– so photos can be accessible anywhere, and from any connected device. Additionally, the in-camera editing feature allows users to edit images directly on the camera prior to sharing them, eliminating the need for a PC to make adjustments.
100. Exciting Shots Made Easy
101. Samsung’s Smart Auto setting analyzes, identifies and automatically selects the most appropriate of its scene modes to provide users with the best possible result every time. From a brilliant fireworks display to a dimly-lit party environment, scene detection technology identifies the shooting conditions and automatically tailors the settings to help achieve standout results. For users seeking more control over their photo-taking experience, the WB150F allows them to explore their own photographic skills with the Full Manual Control setting, while also taking advantage of the camera’s dual image stabilization (DIS).
102. Whether filming exotic locations and fauna on vacation or capturing sentimental family footage on the football field, Samsung’s latest cameras allow users to capture and share their video in stunning HD quality. The WB150F and DV300F feature fantastic 720p/30fps HD recording, ensuring that once-in-a-lifetime experiences are captured in the same color and vibrancy that existed in real life.
103. Dynamic Live Panoramas Capture the Big Picture
104. The Live Panorama function featured on the WB150F, allows consumers to capture even more of the action, facilitating wide panoramic shots which don’t miss any of the detail, from sprawling mountain peaks through to large groups of friends. By simply holding down the shutter button and sweeping the camera across the subject users want to capture, the camera can seamlessly stitch together a dynamic scene. Users can even preview the whole image they’ve just captured via the ultra-clear AMOLED screen.
105. Fun Features Add Pizazz to Pictures
106. With Split Shot, camera users can divide the screen into three separate shots and create up to three different photographs by simply blending them together to create a whole new view of their travels. Using Magic Frame they can also position their target in the middle of a fun background – either choose from one of the many pre-designed backgrounds like movie billboards or posters or erase part of an existing picture to get even more creative! Or use the Picture-in-Picture feature to insert a photo – whether an eye-catching monument or personal portrait into another image or video so users can combine their favorite shots to make a memorable collage. Finally, users can also bend, stretch, and warp pictures of friends and family for big laughs — with the Funny Face feature. Simply press the 5-direction key to enlarge heads or noses, or create hilarious distortions. When they move the camera, Face Tracking preserves the funny looks just the way they want them.
107. Pricing and Availability
These forward-looking statements may include statements with regard to the expected development of revenue, earnings, profits from operations, depreciation and amortization, cash flows and personnel-related measures. You should consider them with caution. Such statements are subject to risks and uncertainties, most of which are difficult to predict and are generally beyond Deutsche Telekom’s control. Among the factors that might influence our ability to achieve our objectives are the progress of our workforce reduction initiative and other cost-saving measures, and the impact of other significant strategic, labour or business initiatives, including acquisitions, dispositions and business combinations, and our network upgrade and expansion initiatives. In addition, stronger than expected competition, technological change, legal proceedings and regulatory developments, among other factors, may have a material adverse effect on our costs and revenue development. Further, the economic downturn in our markets, and changes in interest and currency exchange rates, may also have an impact on our business development and the availability of financing on favourable conditions. Changes to our expectations concerning future cash flows may lead to impairment write downs of assets carried at historical cost, which may materially affect our results at the group and operating segment levels. If these or other risks and uncertainties materialize, or if the assumptions underlying any of these statements prove incorrect, our actual performance may materially differ from the performance expressed or implied by forward-looking statements. These non-GAAP measures should be considered in addition to, but not as a substitute for, the information prepared in accordance with IFRS. Non-GAAP financial performance measures are not subject to IFRS or any other generally accepted accounting principles. Other companies may define these terms in different ways.

View the original article here

Product News : T-Mobile Unveils the SAMSUNG Galaxy S Blaze 4G

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Jan. 10, 2012 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S.1, today announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Galaxy S® Blaze™ 4G. Successful innovations only come after many failed attempts. Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, explores the intersection of open source and innovation in a Technology Academy Finland (TAF) post "What is Innovation?"

Mickos says:

"An innovation creates a new dimension of performance. It's not enough to improve performance. It’s not enough to create a new thought. A new thing is not an innovation unless it finds a new direction for performance."

He explains that innovation doesn't require a PHD, and that open source development is a great example of innovation and a way to bring different opinions together to advance technology.

"Open source software is an innovation in that it brings together in a productive way programmers who disagree on many things," Mickos said. He goes on to list other examples such as Facebook, the touchscreen, and e-learning.

> Read the full post at TAF

I agree with Mickos. It takes a release often, release early mentality with a fail early, fail often approach to develop innovations that create a new performance dimension. One of the hardest perceptions to break, tied to innovation, is that they happen in a laboratory setting and require a lab coat.

This is not the case in the 21st century as we see from the examples above—Facebook was not made in a science lab. Innovations are being created in dorm rooms, home garages, collaboratively on the Internet, and beyond.

View the original article here

Apple Products See the Unpolished Side of Chrome

By Richard Adhikari
MacNewsWorld
Part of the ECT News Network
06/29/12 11:56 AM PT
The gremlin causing many new MacBook Air notebooks to crash is reportedly none other than Google Chrome. The Web browser causes a kernel panic, shutting down the computer. Meanwhile, Chrome is also moving to iOS with a new third-party app. However, there are questions regarding the mobile browser's speed, since it's not permitted to use certain technologies used by iOS' native Safari.
Mac owners have been having more than a few headaches with Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Chrome browser.

Owners of new Macbook Airs have been complaining for several days that their devices have been freezing or crashing when they use the Chrome browser.

Google has confirmed to Gizmodo that the problem is a leak of graphics resources in the Chrome browser related to the drawing of plugins on Mac OS X and that it's working to find and fix the root cause.

"This is not good news for Google's reputation with Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) users," Al Hilwa, a program director at IDC, told MacNewsWorld.

Separately, Google on Thursday unveiled Chrome for the iPhone and iPad at its Google I/O developers' conference in San Francisco.

It's possible, though, that Chrome could run more slowly on iOS than the default Mobile Safari browser because the latter uses the Nitro JavaScript engine, which other browsers are barred from using.

"This will likely be the same kind of problem folks will complain about when running in the new Metro sandboxed environment from Microsoft," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told MacNewsWorld. "These are intentionally closed systems to better assure the customer experience and protect against hostile hacking."

New Macbook Airs used by staffers at Gizmodo froze and crashed when the Chrome browser was used, according to the tech blog. Switching to Apple's Safari browser solved the problem, it reported.

A graphics resource leak in Chrome is causing a kernel panic on Macs with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) HD 4000 graphics processing units (GPUs), Google said. That includes new Macbook Airs. Google has filed radar bug number 11762608 with Apple about the kernel panics because it shouldn't be possible for an application to trigger such behavior.
Google sent out an auto update for Chrome on Thursday that temporarily disables some of its GPU acceleration features on new MacBook Airs. It expects to send out further fixes to re-enable many or all of those features.

Many of the new notebooks Apple unveiled earlier this month are susceptible, as several use the Intel HD 4000 GPU.

Apple's products "are making significant gains as Web browsing devices," IDC's Hilwa said. The issues Chrome is suffering on MacBook Airs "could undermine Google's ability to reach this growing number of users."

Apple "is the power player in the consumer space, and right now consumers are driving end points," Enderle stated. "As they force Google off their platforms, Google is being diminished, showcasing the massive opportunity cost of Google's betrayal of Apple by creating Android in the first place."

Chrome and other third-party browsers can sometimes run more slowly on iOS than Apple's Safari browser does because they aren't allowed to use the faster Nitro JavaScript engine, which Safari uses.

"Chrome for iOS provides the same fast, secure and stable Web browsing experience you've come to enjoy when using Chrome on your desktop or Android device, while also adapting to platform specific technical specifications," Google spokesperson Jessica Kositz told MacNewsWorld. "Rendering and the JavaScript engine are provided by iOS through UIWebView, as are all third-party browsers on iOS, so Chrome for iOS does not use Chrome v8 JS engine."

Apple introduced Nitro into iOS 4.3 in March 2011 and also uses Nitro in Mac OS X.

Nitro evolved from JavaScriptCore, a framework that provides a JavaScript engine for WebKit implementations. The WebKit project rewrote JavaScriptCore as "SquirrelFish," a bytecode interpreter. SquirrelFish evolved into SquirrelFish Extreme, which was marketed as "Nitro" and announced in September of 2008. Nitro compiles JavaScript into native machine mode.

Apple is blocking access to Nitro for other vendors' browsers on iOS because this is "deemed too risky by Apple," Enderle suggested. "Whether this is to protect against a competitive threat more than a security exploit isn't clear."
Print Version E-Mail Article Reprints More by Richard Adhikari

View the original article here

Modbook, the Mac Tablet of Yore, Marches Back Into Action

By Richard Adhikari
MacNewsWorld
Part of the ECT News Network
06/29/12 6:00 AM PT
After years of radio silence, Modbook is once again ready to build Mac tablets. To make its new Modbook Pro, the company disassembles 13-inch MacBook Pros and fits the guts inside custom tablet enclosures with stylus interfaces. The modification void's Apple's warranty, but Modbook offers a warranty of its own.
The Modbook Pro, a converted MacBook Pro that has been modified by Modbook and is billed as the first Mac tablet, is set to return to the market later in 2012 after an absence of several years.

Its predecessor, the Modbook, which was based on a MacBook, was one of the best-of-show winners at Macworld 2007.

Modbook basically takes a 13-inch MacBook Pro, strips off its enclosure, including the display and the keyboard and trackpad assembly, and slips what's left into its an enclosure with a screen and stylus interface.

The modification voids Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) one-year warranty, so Modbook offers a limited one-year warranty of its own. However, it reportedly is still in the process of setting up authorized service centers. These will be announced before the device ships in early fall.

The Modbook Pro's configurable base system has a 2.5 GHz dual core Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Core i5 processor or a 2.9 GHz dual core Intel Core i7 processor. It also has up to 16 GB of RAM, a 2.5-inch SATA drive of up to 1 TB capacity, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset, an 8x SuperDrive DVD burner, a built-in 64.5 WH lithium-polymer battery, and a 60 W MagSafe power adapter. It supports WiFi and Bluetooth.

A Modbook Pro tablet has a 13.3-inch display with 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and a ForceGlass screen that provides an etched drawing surface that simulates paper. Its Wacom digitizer delivers 512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity.

The device runs all Mac applications. Users can also run OS X's Boot Camp app to install 32- or 64-bit Windows 7.

The Modbook Pro serves as a standalone tablet.

The Modbook enclosure links to a MacBook Pro through one of the latter's two standard USB 3.0 ports. The enclosure seals the connection and the port within the Modbook Pro. All other ports remain accessible from the outside.

The Modbook Pro closely follows Apple's design guidelines for USB high-performance peripherals, Modbook says. The Mac modifier contends the Modbook Pro is essentially a fully standards-compliant USB device.

"Is this [Modbook Pro] cool? Sure," Jeff Orr, a senior practice director at ABI Research, told MacNewsWorld. "But like anybody who makes custom enclosures for current laptops like jewel-encrusted ones, people will buy it because of that -- and I don't think it's going to be a good idea."

The Modbook Pro "has a very high cool factor, and Apple's base is filled with folks that chase stats," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group. "This product will carry a very high status aspect. Hell, I'm tempted to buy one."

Further, the Modbook Pro "is a device designed for the Mac OS and those who like to work with styluses," Enderle told TechNewsWorld. "It's a productivity tablet focused more on creation than consumption."

However, the Modbook Pro's extreme specialization might hurt its future.

"People are going to be asked to pay a premium for something that's going to have a very specialized purpose," ABI's Orr pointed out. "That's where I'm challenged. You could say this is a good OS, has a good application base, a good connection to the Internet, but how many people are there that really want it?"

On the other hand, the Modbook Pro's ability to run Windows 7 "also suggests it could run Windows 8," Enderle told MacNewsWorld. That "might provide a hedge if the user wanted to switch to Windows 8 either because they like it or because support sucked too much on this product."

Modbook did not respond to our request for comment.
Print Version E-Mail Article Reprints More by Richard Adhikari

View the original article here

An open source city takes shape: Open, online tools and data

Open government scored another victory when the City of Raleigh announced the Open Raleigh initiative—an online repository with open data, web and mobile applications, and links to participatory tools and organizations. It’s all part of Raleigh’s open source strategy focusing on transparency, collaboration, and improved access to information. It’s proof of the ongoing work of the public-facing, open source resolution Raleigh unanimously passed earlier this year.

As part of the Open Raleigh announcement, the city included an online feedback system: My Raleigh Ideas! It’s a new service the city will use to collaborate with the public to solicit ideas on future projects and topics. Currently, the city is using it to prioritize the data citizens might want in the open data portal and to solicit input for the open data policy.

You can’t get much more open source than collaboratively creating your open data policy with citizens and other stakeholders. City staff “engage with citizen groups, youth development programs, entrepreneurs, and businesses to create an open data policy,” according to the Open Raleigh home page.

The city’s open source strategy is an ongoing partnership with citizens. We have seen, through the actions of elected officials, city staff, and citizen groups like the Citizens Advisory Council (CAC), that gathering citizen input is part of Raleigh’s open source culture.

The open data portal brings different software solutions together to solve multiple problems. It’s a great strategy.

City governments shouldn’t work to write code or solve problems that are already solved—it’s redundant. Why reinvent the wheel when you can subscribe to a constant stream of updates or deploy a solution that has already solved the technological challenge at-hand?

Government IT departments are deploying solutions that already fix these problems. In this specific example, Raleigh is successfully piecing together different technologies to create a comprehensive open data portal. Let’s take a look at the technical components of Open Raleigh.

The grand vision for the open data portal has two components, ESRI and a to-be determined solution similar to Socrata. They both play a critical role housing the available data and making it easier-to-consume by end users.

The ESRI geoportal server is an open source product that enables discovery, use, and publishing of metadata for geospatial resources. It allows custom downloads of data using a map-based interface. ESRI is also used at the county and state level, which allows for seamless searching. Citizens, developers, and businesses can already use almost 100 geospatial layers available through the geoportal.

The city is also looking to deploy a solution similar to Socrata to house other data resources for the open data portal. This type of solution would use an open data platform to transform information assets such as geospatial data and unstructured content into consumable data.

The MyRaleigh Ideas! crowdsouring platform uses the Granicus CivicIdeas product. The city is using the open data project as a test case for the tool. They are currently using MyRaleigh Ideas! to solicit feedback and determine which open data sets are a priority for the community. Pending the outcome of the pilot, the platform may be available for other city departments to use for their citizen engagement needs.

GovDelivery helps government agencies create effective digital communications. Raleigh has deployed an effective email subscription solution called My Raleigh Subscriptions that allows citizens to opt-in to email updates of their choosing. From my own personal experience, it’s saved me a ton of duplicate emails. Citizens can choose from a variety of topics ranging from alerts to newsletters, meeting agendas to news releases, event information to crime alerts, and much more.

SeeClickFix is a way for citizens to report non-emergency problems to the city such as potholes, graffiti, or broken sidewalks. Behind the scenes, SeeClickFix uses the Open311 standard which is an effort to coordinate a standardized, open-access, read/write model for citizens to report non-emergency issues.

Citizens no longer need to hunt down a phone number or get bounced around from department to department. Once they see a problem, the can click to report it through a website or a mobile application, and the city will acknowledge the issue and channel it to the right department to get it fixed.

Open Raleigh is making a big difference for the citizen experience. We’ve talked about just a few of the open tools that are changing how citizens can affect their surroundings. However, the successful use of open technology in North Carolina is no longer a simple one-way street. In part two of this series, we’ll explore the impact Open Raleigh is having on open source.

View the original article here

Exclusive: Amazon to take on Brazil's ecommerce jungle

<IMG border=0 alt="Graphics of the new Amazon Kindle tablets are seen at a news conference during the launch of Amazon's new tablets in New York, September 28, 2011. The company would also have to ride out a downturn in Brazil's economy that threatens to cool consumer demand.

"Brazil would be the first country Amazon enters only with digital (products) and that is because of the logistic and tax difficulties," said the industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

"Having a full retail operation? That's the goal," the source added.

A Brazil-based operation would save the country's 200 million consumers from paying high import taxes on online orders shipped from overseas.

Two local book publishers told Reuters they have had meetings and video conferences in recent months to negotiate contracts with Amazon's head of Kindle content, Pedro Huerta.

"They told us the plan is to start between October and November," said one of the publishers, who asked not to be identified.

Amazon spokesman Craig Berman declined to comment.

The world's largest online retailer, Amazon is the latest U.S. company looking to tap Brazil's $10.5 billion online retail market, which is expected to grow 25 percent this year fueled by a swelling middle class. Others include online movie service Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) and home-rental service AirBnB.

It would be Amazon's latest foray into emerging markets after breaking into China in 2004 and India earlier this year.

But the move comes as Brazil's decade-long expansion in consumer growth hits the brakes. In 2012, Brazil's economy is expected to grow less than last year's 2.7 percent expansion, raising questions about the timing of Amazon's entrance.

Pedro Guasti, director of the Sao Paulo-based research firm eBit, says Brazil's online business has become big enough to pop up on Amazon's radar.

"This year we should reach $12 billion in sales online, a level that justifies their entry. If they wait much longer it would become very expensive," he said.

KINDLE AIMS FOR SUPREMACY

Amazon thinks it could quickly dominate Brazil's ebook market with the Kindle, boosting sales of electronic books to 15 percent of the publishing market in the first year of operations from 0.5 percent currently, the industry source said.

Amazon hopes to grab 90 percent of Brazil's ebook market, the source added, in part because many Brazilians already download content from its site using readers they bought abroad.

Brazilians account for 1 percent of the global traffic to Amazon's websites, according to the company's information firm Alexa. That compares to 2.3 percent in Britain or 1.3 in Germany, where Amazon already has operations.

To gain market share quickly in Brazil, Amazon will likely sell its most basic Kindle model at a subsidized price of under 500 reais ($239), three times more expensive than in the U.S. but still bellow rival products, the source said.

That strategy - prioritizing market share over profit - is one that Amazon has used elsewhere, prompting critics to question the company's ability to make money in the long run.

Amazon has already signed contracts with around 30 Brazilian publishers and is rushing to build a portfolio of some 10,000 electronic books ahead of the end-year shopping season, the source familiar with the company´s plan said.

A publisher involved in the negotiations said Amazon is planning to price the ebooks at about 70 percent of their cover price and earn a profit margin of to 40 to 50 percent.

"Revenues for us will be insignificant, but we see it as an important channel to promote our products and sell more physical books," the publisher said, who also asked not to be identified because negotiations with Amazon are ongoing.

Amazon's move could end up prompting other U.S. competitors to expand their digital operations into on Brazil. One distributor said Barnes & Noble Inc (BKS.N) has already approached some Brazilian publishers with its reader Nook. A spokeswoman with the U.S. bookseller said they have plans to expand internationally but had no specific comments on Brazil.

"Local companies will need to acquire foreign technology in order to survive," said the source close to the negotiations.

NOT AN EASY MARKET

Rumors of Amazon's arrival are swirling in Brazil's online retail market, with many players already preparing marketplace platforms to compete with the U.S. giant.

Despite relatively low Internet penetration, Brazil has recently overtaken India as Facebook's (FB.O) second-biggest user base and is one of the world's fastest growing markets for smartphones.

But publishers and online retailers warn that when Amazon expands its retail offerings, it will struggle to replicate its efficient business model in Brazil, where labor costs are high, taxes complex and less than 20 percent of roads are paved.

Online retailers in Brazil complain about inter-state taxes and logistical bottlenecks in this vast country, which is roughly the size of the United States and where mail is sometimes delivered by canoe. Steep customs taxes and an endless chain of intermediaries make imported goods expensive.

Ludovino Lopes, head of Brazil's ecommerce association camara-e.net, says Amazon will have to adapt. "They will have to tropicalize their business model to take on those challenges."

One likely strategy is a long-term approach.

"I think Amazon will take small steps at first, to learn the market, but then invest in growth. Amazon is a large company, and could subsidize its operations in Brazil for years before making a profit there," said Colin Sebastian, an equity research analyst with R.W. Baird in San Francisco.

Local competitors say Amazon would first have to prove it can compete in the challenging environment.

"They are going to face the same kind of problems we always had," said Sergio Herz, director of Livraria Cultura, one of Brazil's top bookstores with a dozen locations.

"Until now they were in heaven and we were in hell. 122. All too often, direction setting happens in an ivory tower—cut off from valuable in-the-trenches insight and expertise and out of tune with shifts in the broader environment. What’s more, when strategy is cooked up in an elite enclave, the process of "selling" it to the very people expected to implement it becomes an arduous and uncertain chore.
123. In their excellent new piece in the McKinsey Quarterly, MIX co-founder Michele Zanini and Arne Gast, a principal in McKinsey’s Amsterdam office, explore a set of compelling alternatives (many of which emerged as stories on the MIX)—and make a case for cultivating the social side of strategy.
124. Here’s a taste of the piece:
125.

  126. In 2009, Wikimedia launched a special wiki—one dedicated to the organization’s own strategy. Over the next two years, more than 1,000 volunteers generated some 900 proposals for the company’s future direction and then categorized, rationalized, and formed task forces to elaborate on them. The result was a coherent strategic plan detailing a set of beliefs, priorities, and related commitments that together engendered among participants a deep sense of dedication to Wikimedia’s future. Through the launch of several special projects and the continued work of self-organizing teams dedicated to specific proposals, the vision laid out in the strategic plan is now unfolding.
127. Wikimedia’s effort to crowdsource its strategy probably sounds like an outlier—after all, the company’s very existence rests on collaborative content creation. Yet over the past few years, a growing number of organizations have begun experimenting with opening up their strategy processes to constituents who were previously frozen out of strategic direction setting. Examples include 3M, Dutch insurer AEGON, global IT services provider HCL Technologies, Red Hat (the leading provider? of Linux software), and defense contractor Rite-Solutions.
128. While such efforts are at different stages, executives at organizations that are experimenting with more participatory modes of strategy development cite two major benefits. One is improving the quality of strategy by pulling in diverse and detailed frontline perspectives that are typically overlooked but can make the resulting plans more insightful and actionable. The second is building enthusiasm and alignment behind a company’s strategic direction—a critical component of long- term organizational health, effective execution, and strong financial performance that is all too rare.

Usually Apple delivers. But there's one exception: When streaming episodes of certain TV shows, users sometimes see ads that iTunes has slapped onto the show's end credits. That wouldn't be a problem if the ads weren't so incredibly, absurdly loud. This is the kind of detail users expect Apple to pay attention to.
As an Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) product-lovin' enthusiast, my default gut reaction is to defend Apple, just like my gut reaction to defend my family and friends. When Apple does something silly, or more likely doesn't do something it ought to do -- or consumers wish it would do -- I tend to think about it from the perspective of Apple's business interests. And I rationalize it. Often enough, it makes reasonable sense. After all, you don't get to be the most successful consumer tech company in the world for being dumb.

And yet, Apple has done something so inane, so painful to my loyalty, that I've found myself not only avoiding Apple's product, but also raging against it with very real anger. I'm seriously pissed, and many of you are going to laugh at the reason why: Apple is inserting iTunes commercials into the ends of "Dora the Explorer" cartoon television episodes that I bought.

I hope you're cracking up right now. Me, a grown man, watching "Dora the Explorer." Sure, she's got a big weird head and sure, she has a talking backpack, but she's not all that bad. OK, she's tough to take. I am not a fan of Dora. But plenty of small children love her, and when small children need to get their Dora fix, I know how to deliver it. I cue up my Apple TV, select an episode, an boom, I can start streaming Dora from Apple's cloud servers in the sky. Or North Carolina. Wherever they are. Works pretty well, usually.

I used to always just stream them from my MacBook, but if it was asleep, I found it easier to not share the Mac and instead just stream from Apple. Seemed like a nice cloud-friendly feature, right? Until I noticed the commercials. Here's what happens:

If you watch a "Dora" episode on your Mac, directly from the file you purchased and downloaded, you get the episode. No commercials. Perfect. If you stream from your Mac, same deal. No commercial. If you move the episode to your iPad or iPod or iPhone ... same deal. No commercial. If you stream an episode via your Apple TV from Apple's servers in the sky, at the end of the credits, a very loud commercial will suddenly blast out of your TV speakers -- VERY loud -- shouting about how you can get more "Dora" adventures from iTunes. It's obviously a pitch to go buy more "Dora" episodes.

At least it's a commercial that is context-consistent -- Apple isn't trying to sell you or your kids on some other cartoon character you might not approve of. Like that Diego character. His rescue pack is so not real. So that's tolerable, at least. And the commercial comes at the end of the episode, interrupting the credits. No big deal.

It's the crass increase of volume when the commercial airs. I mean seriously, there I am minding my own business, when boom, some Apple narrator commercial voice is blasting through the household.

No one likes this.

I find it very disappointing.

I thought Apple was better than this. I thought Apple was smarter than this. I have a hard time imagining anyone sitting down deep inside of the secret bowels of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino and thinking, "You know what, let's self-promote more iTunes content by creating commercials to show at the end of TV episodes. And better yet, let's amp up the sound waves so that it blasts out extra-loud, maybe even loud enough to startle the neighbor's dog. Yeah. That's the project I want to work on."

And I have a harder time imagining that someone with a brain approved it.

Steve Jobs sure as heck would not have enjoyed an iTunes commercial blasting out at the end of one of his shows. It would have damaged his calm, I'm telling you. It damages mine, that's for sure.

Meanwhile, several weeks ago CEO Tim Cook mentioned something about watching Apple TV and Apple employees watching their own devices and liking that experience. I'm not sure which episodes Apple is attaching commercials to -- is it just "Dora?" -- but I'm hard-pressed to believe that Cook knows anything about the real American TV-watching experience based on what he gets out of Apple TV options. If he did, there's no way this crappy commercial system would have seen the light of day, even with "Dora the Explorer."

I actually buy TV episodes so I can have them and watch them whenever I want (I mean, so the kids can watch them) so they can be portable on road trips. I have the Apple TV because it's a great set-top box product. Hard to beat. I did not buy into any Apple ecosystem or Apple universe to listen to commercials, particularly loud and annoying commercials. Heck, this is exactly the reason I buy episodes of shows. If I miss an episode of "Castle," for example, because someone deleted the recording on my DVR, sometimes I'll buy the episode instead of watching it with commercials online, just to get the superior experience.

So Apple, I'm sure, has some terms-of-use line item that lets them insert commercials into so-called episodes that I bought and now have access to through their service. I'm sure they have every right to do this. I'm sure they want to be super-profitable with their service. What I'm saying, as a consumer, is that I do not like it at all, and moreover, I'm actively choosing alternatives because of it. This. Yes. I buy Apple and spend a lot of money doing it for a higher-quality experience. Not this experience.

What's even crazy is that in 2010, Congress passed the CALM Act (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation), and in late 2011 the FCC was supposedly starting to enforce it. Apparently no one at Apple has heard of this law. Or it doesn't apply to them. My point, though, is that nearly everybody hates loud commercials.

And here's what's dangerous to Apple: The Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox 360. I've started reaching for the Xbox 360 controller first went I want to stream an episode of "Dora the Explorer" -- or watch Shark Week or whatever. Microsoft isn't inserting commercials into the programming I get via Xbox Live and my Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) Prime Membership. I actually told a pre-schooler this weekend that the mermaid episode was not available ... simply because I have latent irritation issues with Apple and their "Dora" iTunes commercials.

What's worse: I'm inadvertently training small children to use the Xbox 360 for cartoon episodes instead of iTunes. Instead of Apple. And you know what? The experience is better.

I just expect higher quality out of Apple, and I'm still surprised at my level of irritation over it.
MacNewsWorld columnist Chris Maxcer has been writing about the tech industry since the birth of the email newsletter, and he still remembers the clacking Mac keyboards from high school -- Apple's seed-planting strategy at work. Researchers at Rice University, though, have developed a battery that can be painted onto a surface. The technology still requires more development before it's commercially viable, but if it's sufficiently improved it could also be used in applications like solar cells.
Researchers at Rice University have developed a paint that works as a battery, and it could change the way batteries are produced and reduce energy storage restrictions.

The paint-on battery is similar in material balance to traditional lithium-ion batteries. It has five layers -- a positive and a negative current collector, a cathode, an anode and an ion-conducting separator in the middle.

But unlike typical lithium batteries, a perfected paint-on version wouldn't carry the same restrictions in design that traditional batteries do. Each layer is sprayed on rather than pieced together.

As consumer electronic products such as smartphones and tablets get smaller and thinner, engineers struggle to fit a long-lasting, traditional battery into tighter spaces. A painted battery could alleviate those design restrictions.

Additionally, as scientists explore alternative forms of energy and look to add batteries to new technologies such as solar panels or textiles, a versatile, spray-on battery has the potential to eliminate further design frustrations.

"Paintable batteries have the capability of direct and seamless integration with objects," Neelam Singh, lead author on the study, told TechNewsWorld.

Researchers tested the paint layers on ceramics, glass and stainless steel on a variety of shaped surfaces to see how they would react to the different structures.

The results of the study were published Thursday in Nature Scientific Reports.

The research is a step forward for scientists and engineers working to consolidate batteries and explore ways to cut down on storage restrictions, said Yan Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He called the work a "significant development" in battery manufacturing but added the team still has work ahead of it before it can revolutionize the industry.

"The drawbacks include the cycle life and rate performance," he told TechNewsWorld. "The performance needs to be as good as the state-of-the-art of lithium-ion batteries. The paper has only about 60 cycles, which is still too short for real applications."

The current product is also limited in scope because it cannot be handled by non-professionals and still can't stand all outside elements.

"To be able to make batteries at home we need to develop materials that are safer, non-toxic and do not degrade in the presence of air or moisture," said Singh.

The team has acknowledged those drawbacks and is already working on the next step to making the spray-on battery a viable product, said Singh.

"We have demonstrated the concept of paintable batteries, and the next step is to develop new materials for the battery that are not air- or moisture-sensitive, [and are] non-toxic and safe to handle by non-experts," said Singh. "We are also working on developing paints for packaging the battery and making every layer, including packaging, by spray-painting technique."

If the researchers can improve the life of the spray-on battery, Wang said, it could still be several years before a product hits the market. But if it does, the practical applications could be widespread across industries that are experimenting with battery power, the biggest possibility being with solar power, said Singh. Since solar panels require large surface areas, the design could be ideal.

"Our current work is the demonstration of the paintable battery concept, but it opens up immense possibilities of integration with energy capture devices such as solar cells, as well as objects of daily use," she said. "We think that it can be used with printed electronics, RFID or other smart objects."
Print Version E-Mail Article Reprints More by Rachelle Dragani

View the original article here

Microsoft to buy Yammer for $1.2 billion

<IMG border=0 alt="Yammer CEO David Sacks (L) and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer shake hands after announcing Microsoft will acquire Yammer for $1.2 billion cash in San Francisco, June 25, 2012. Companies such as Ford Motor Co, Supervalu and Deloitte are customers.

The 400-employee firm will keep its headquarters in San Francisco but will become part of Microsoft's Office unit under Kurt DelBene in Seattle. Yammer will still be led by current CEO David Sacks, a former PayPal executive.

The service should fill a growing gap that Microsoft was struggling to fill with its SharePoint application for creating private websites for intra-company projects.

"This acquisition will immediately make Microsoft a strong competitor in the enterprise social market," said Larry Cannell, an analyst at tech research firm Gartner. "It was a stretch to call the capabilities in SharePoint's MySite feature a social network site."

With Yammer, employees can use a private, online company directory to contact co-workers, form networks, chat, share links and post news. A basic version of Yammer is free, but a subscription buys more security and integration with other company-wide software. Yammer's subscription-based business model makes it different from ad-driven network companies like Facebook or LinkedIn Corp.

The deal, which values Yammer's users at about $240 each, may ignite interest in companies offering similar services, such as Salesforce.com Inc, Jive Software Inc and Telligent.

The area of internal networking for companies has attracted other big tech companies such as Cisco Systems Inc, which has a similar offering to Yammer called WebEx Social, and International Business Machine Corp with a rival product called Connections.

Microsoft, which owns a small fraction of Facebook shares, has been looking for ways to make its desktop-bound products more interactive and attractive to its core corporate users and home consumers, and has even been experimenting with its own social network called So.cl (pronounced 'social').

Last year it paid $8.5 billion to buy online chat company Skype, which it is integrating into its offerings, including the next version of Office.

Microsoft's Office suite of applications - including Outlook email, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentation program - is the bedrock of most companies' day-to-day working software.

The Office unit is Microsoft's most profitable, contributing 60 percent of its profit last year, and amassing more sales than its flagship Windows operating system.

Microsoft closed down 2.7 percent at $29.86 on Nasdaq.

(Additional reporting by Sayantani Ghosh. And she said in court that she might rule on Sunday whether or to similarly put on hold the earlier injunction on the Galaxy Tab.

Apple has waged an international patent war since 2010 as it seeks to limit the growth of Google's Android system, the world's most-used mobile operating platform. Opponents of Apple say it is using patents too aggressively in a bid to stamp out competition.

Spokeswoman Kristin Huguet reiterated her previous statement, accusing Samsung of copying the look and feel of its products.

Samsung said in a statement that it is "disappointed" in the decision. "We will take all available measures, including legal action, to ensure the Galaxy Nexus remains available to consumers," the statement added

As a condition of the injunction, Apple was ordered to post a bond of more than $95 million, to secure payment of damages sustained by Samsung should the injunction be deemed a wrongful decision later. The order shall become effective upon posting of the bond.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, 12-00630.

(Reporting By Dan Levine and Poornima Gupta; Editing by Edwin Chan, Carol Bishopric and Richard Chang)

View the original article here

Single trial for three accused in Dell insider case: Judge

<IMG border=0 alt="A Dell computer logo is seen on a laptop at Best Buy in Phoenix, Arizona, February 18, 2010. Given the ongoing "financial crisis," Fishbein said, "I can't think of a more emotional issue in this day and age."

The judge, however, was not sympathetic.

"I tried a murder trial with the shooter and the look-out at the same time. How do you think they felt?" Sullivan said.

Chiasson and Newman are accused of illegally trading ahead of computer maker Dell Inc's earnings announcements for the first and second quarters of 2008, netting them profits, respectively, of $57 million and $3.8 million.

An attorney for analyst Jon Horvath, of Sigma Capital management, a unit of Steven Cohen's hedge fund SAC Capital, had also argued for a separate trial.

Horvath was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and one count of securities fraud. Chiasson and Newman both face one count each of conspiracy to commit securities fraud as well as several counts of securities fraud.

All three men have pleaded not guilty and are contesting the charges.

The government's case is based in part on testimony by three former analysts turned government cooperators: Sandeep "Sandy" Goyal, Jesse Tortora and Spyridon Adondakis. All three previously pleaded guilty to related insider trading charges.

The trial is scheduled for October 29.

The case is US v. Todd Newman et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-mj-0124 and 12-cr-00121.

(Reporting By Basil Katz; editing by Carol Bishopric)

View the original article here
