5.
  6. Greetings fine readers.
  7.

8. It has been a lot of fun writing this blog for the past couple years. Mainly, this blog has been focused on the liberty movement, God, and the Gamecocks. I have enjoyed writing posts on these subjects from time to time.
  9.

10. I do not anticipate writing anymore posts for this blog at this time. I may start another blog at a later date. If I do, I will post an update on my plans in that regard.
  11.

12. Thank you for reading this blog.

Vanderbilt Players Speak Out About the Gamecocks

Vanderbilt's junior safety, Javon Marshall (# 31, 5'10", 195), spoke about how he feels about playing South Carolina to open the season:
  13.
  14.
The setting for this game is just epic. It's great. Like you said, it couldn't be a better opponent. It couldn't be a better time. I feel like South Carolina is a great team to open up against.

  15. (1:45 - 2:02)
  16.

17.
  18.

19. Rob Lohr (# 84,6-4, 290) Vanderbilt's senior starting defensive tackle, while somewhat complimentary to Marcus Lattimore, predicted that the Vanderbilt defense will shut him (Lattimore) down, as well as the Gamecock's offensive execution in general.
  20.
  21.
We are looking to stop him, hold him, and hold the entire offense. We're excited about the opportunity to go up against him.

  22. (:22 - :29)
  23.

24. Referring to the youth of the Gamecock offensive tackles, Lohr stated that Vanderbilt intended to attack.
  25.
  26.
Absolutely, anytime you get a young guy in their you want to see what he is made of. At the same time, you gotta remember if he is good enough to start at a school like South Carolina or in this league, he's probably pretty good. . . . You always look for opportunities against younger guys or anybody. Same game plan. We're trying to get after it.

  27. (1:27 - 1:40)
  28.
  29. Lohr was asked if this Vanderbilt team is better than the 2011 team that played South Carolina. He stated:
  30.
  31.
I think we're a lot better. We'll see on Thursday night. But I believe you guys are going to be excited to be a part of this.

  37.

38. A few years ago, a lot of people became excised about the Constitution. The Tea Party revolution, the media called it. However, that movement soon was co-opted by opportunistic politicians like Sarah Palin and Nikki Haley. These politicians do not care about the Republic or the Constitution. Rather, their allegiance is to political ambition.
  39.

40. This fact is evident by their hypocrisy regarding the Seventh Amendment. How can you be for the Constitution except when it comes to juries?
  41.

42.
  43.

44. Loss of the right to a trial in front of a local community jury was a major cause of the Revolution. England was hauling back colonists to England for trial in front of magistrates. That violated the Magna Carta (The The Great Charter of the Liberties) and infuriated our founding fathers.
  45.

46. There is a website that informs about the Seventh Amendment and the shadowy effort to kill the Seventh Amendment. The Seventh Amendment states:
  47.
  48.
In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States than according to the rules of the common law.

  49.
  50. The purpose of that amendment is to protect us from unfair trials. A jury reduces the risk of a biased decision. Please visit the WhatAbout7 site and become informed.

South Carolina Receiver Position Designations

The 2012 football season practices for the South Carolina Gamecocks began about ten days ago. The players are giving the media short interviews about the practices.
  51.

52. Mostly, the media seems focused on discerning the depth chart. I am not sure why. It is so early that even the players themselves are not really sure about who will play the most in the August 30 opening game at Vanderbilt. The nationally televised ESPN game is scheduled to start at 7 P.M. Eastern Standard Time.
  53.

54. When interviewing receivers, the reporters ask what position the receiver is playing. They answer by saying "Z" or "X" or "B." Some of the reporters, whose job it is to cover football, are confused and the receivers have to explain.
  55.

56. The chart below was made based on Spurrier's Florida Fun-N-Gun playbook. The receiver positions are diagrammed here with eight formations. This post attempts to evaluate these positions and speculates about how they might be applicable to the 2012 Gamecock receivers.
  57.

58.

  59.

60. Ace Sanders is now playing Alshon's old position, the X position. This has the media confused because Alshon was big and rangy while Ace is smaller and quicker. Does this mean the character of Spurrier's offense has taken on a new dimension?
  61.

62. It seems to me that the answer to why Alshon played X is pretty simple. The X receiver is designated in every Fun-N-Gun formation. That probably remains true now in Spurrier's evolving offense. It makes sense that the Gamecocks best receiver would play X. A talented receiver like Alshon had to play X. Anything else and Spurrier would be stupid.
  63.

64. Because the X receiver plays in many formations, that player needs to have a great understanding of the offensive playbook. According to reports, Ace is now the best of the returning Gamecock receivers. He, according to most of the receivers who have been interviewed, is teaching other receivers the playbook, where to lineup, how to read defenses, etc. Ace is also a more natural X because of his size disparity with Alshon. Spurrier Junior stated that he likes Ace at X because, "The outside guy gets a little more freedom."
  65.

66. Reporters want to know if Ace will take Alshon's role as a go-to receiver this season. Ace shot that idea down by stating that, "Nobody is looking to be Alshon. Everyone is trying to be our own identity." Spurrier Junior said he hopes that four receivers can be go-to guys.
  67.

68. According to Damiere Byrd, Bruce Ellington and he are playing the Z position. This is pretty interesting because the Z position is the slot receiver in many formations. The slot receiver is often called upon to block a linebacker or a strong safety on running plays. Spurrier Junior stated in a recent interview that, "the Z player has to be a better blocker."
  69.

70. Clearly, the smaller guys like Byrd or even Ellington will have a tough time blocking against bigger athletes, who can toss them aside like rag dolls. The media hones in on that blocking issue. It seems like they are second guessing the coaches' position selection for the players. But Spurrier Junior defended Byrd's blocking ability saying, "He tougher than you think he is."
  71.

72. Moreover, the size advantage defenders enjoy on running plays is a disadvantage on passing plays. Ace described it as a "mismatch." Spurrier Junior said he likes Byrd at Z because defenders have a tough time, "getting their hands on him." Additionally, the diagram shows that in twenty-five percent of formations the Z receiver is split out into a wide receiver position. So, while the Z receiver is mostly in the slot, sometimes he is not. Throw in motion, and shifting, and you can see how this could make defending a small, quick Z receiver difficult for a big safety or linebacker.
  73.

74. The chart also indicates the X and Z will be on the field together in many formations. Thus, you want your second best receiver starting at the Z position so he is playing more. The South Carolina depth chart, shows the X at the top, and the Z as the second set of receivers.
  75.

76. The B receiver position are shown in the third set on the depth chart. A B receiver is on the field for only twenty-five percent of the Fun-N-Gun formations. Thus, B receivers play only when the offense is set wide-open into a passing formation. How often this will happen in 2012 considering the Gamecock running attack and tight ends remains to be seen.
  77.

78. Another thing to remember is that the veteran players can play multiple wide receiver positions. For any receiver, it is beneficial to know the routes to be run by the other receiver(s).
  79.

80. The Y and S receivers indicate formations for the tight ends and running backs. South Carolina's offense will feature tight ends and running backs a lot this year due to the talent at those positions.
  81.

82. The coaches have seemed somewhat excited about two freshman tight ends, Jerrell Adams and Drew Owens. Coupled with Justice Cunningham and Buster Anderson, a receiver who had several big plays last year, the sky could be the limit at Y receiver. Does that mean the Y receivers will see the field more often than the B? Most probably.
  83.

84. Obviously, with five pretty decent running backs, people are also talking about a two back setup. If that happens, the B receiver spot may not see as much action.

  131.

  132. Spurrier said at the outset of the SEC Media Days, in which press credentials are handed out like candy, that this was the, "Talkin' Season."
  133.

134. Arkansas running back Kniles Davis won the first round of the Talkin' Season by offering Marcus Lattimore an honorable challenge. Knile Davis says he's still SEC's best RB.
  135.
Best moment: Davis was as cool and relaxed as ever during his time in Hoover. He had no problem proclaiming that he still was the league's best running back, but the best moment came when he was leaving our room. As Davis headed toward the door, Chris asked him if he still thought he was the best and Davis replied with a smile, "Still the best and tell Marcus [Lattimore] I'm coming for him."

  136. ESPN SEC Blog, Edward Aschoff, Best of the 2012 SEC media days (scroll down to heading "Best Moment")(July 20, 2012).
  137.

138. Davis' statement was timely and positive. If you're a player at a school in the SEC, and a competitive person by nature, then it is expected you will talk big at the SEC Media Days. Davis did the same in 2011 as he did in 2012. Arkansas players talk big during SEC Media Days. That is a good strategy for the Talkin' Season. You have to view Davis' Challange as one that will last season-long, as in: In the End, We Will See Who is Better.
  139.

140. As a Gamecock Fan and Blogger, I hereby thank Davis for an honorable Woo Pig Sooee verses a Rooster Crow. That is throwing the gauntlet down in front of Marcus at the entrance to the Vanderbilt Stadium.

  141.
Meanwhile, Davis threw down a gauntlet before himself for the Arkansas' home opener against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, an FCS team from the Ohio Valley Conference.
  142.

143. Both Davis and Lattimore are recovering from injuries. Lattimore's was a knee. Davis fractured his left ankle. Knees and ankles are both critical parts of a running back's tools. Despite the injuries, both running backs are picked by coaches at SEC Media Days as the two First Team SEC football running backs. SEC Announces Coaches Preseason All-SEC Teams. Both were picked ahead of numerous other quality SEC running backs.
  144.

145. Not much is really known about Lattimore's recovery except it is reported to be on track, or slightly ahead of schedule.
  146.

147. Davis, on the other hand, is reportedly squatting 600 pounds and cutting and accelerating at full speed.
  148.

149. In any case, this is a "Healthy Challenge" that bears watching on a game-by-game basis all season long. Carolina fans know this sentiment of health very well because we sing it at the end of our school song. Hopefully, this blog will be able to keep up with and report on the Kniles Davis Challenge.

LIBOR: The London Interbank Offered Rate--The Massive Fraud

  150.
LIBOR is an acronym for the interest rate at which banks offer to lend funds to one another in the international interbank market. Like the U.S. prime rate, the LIBOR is a key reference rate that is used for floating transaction rates. For example, one bank may loan another money at a rate of LIBOR plus or minus one percent. It is "primary benchmark for short term interest rates globally." Bbilibor Website
  151.

152. The rate is set by an intermediary, Thomas Reuters, after it reviews rates provided to it daily by a group of 150 major international banks grouped nationally based on 12 currencies. Thomas Reuters is a consulting company with approximately 55,000 employees and revenue of almost $13 Billion. A summary of the calculation can be reviewed at this site.
  153.

154. There is no question now that the large banks have collaborated to perpetrate a fraud in setting LIBOR rates. Their fraud has directly affected a $350 Trillion market by falsifying (understating) risk of investing.
  155.

156. The national governments and banks, including most particularly the U.S. federal government, have been growing more and more intertwined for two centuries. In the U.S., for instance, the Federal Reserve, a private (i.e., not public) organization controls the entire U.S. money supply. It is an organization controlled by central bankers. Since the 2008 financial collapse, the Fed has been directly funding U.S. policy initiatives through "loans" to the U.S. Treasury, a federal agency controlled by the U.S. Executive Branch (i.e., President).
  157.

158. MSM, itself largely a captured industry, is reporting on the fraud. The question now is whether the government will sanction the fraud. Exposure of the fraud is leading to calls for criminal prosecutions and jail. The discretion for such prosecution is within the scope of the politicians. Will they act on it?
  159.

160. Here, in How an old hand would change Barclays, Andrea Leadsom, a British politician (Member of Parliament for South Northamptonshire) calls for systematic deregulation of the banksters.
  161.

162. The mammoth LIBOR banker conspiracy and fraud will doubtless lead some politicians to call for complicated regulatory schemes. However, the regulators these liberals like increase the size of government and their regulators are themselves captured by the bankers. Attempts to regulate just lead to more and more sophisticated frauds. LIBOR fraud is just the latest and hugest banker scam to be exposed. The more the government's (wink, wink) regulate, the more the bankers will evade regulation by dreaming up other scams. Governments need the central bankers to print their money and to fund their government programs and government debt.
  163.

164. As Ms. Leadsom suggests, the best regulation is the free market. Let the banksters fail and go bankrupt. Let them be prosecuted for criminal fraud and go to jail. That is how you stop banker fraud.

  180.

181. The first hole we will examine is at defensive end, the vacuum left by loss of first team All-American and first team All-SEC player Melvin Ingram (6-2, 276) (MI6), one of the most dynamic play-makers in America. MI6 was the 18th pick of the NFL draft going to the Chargers in the first round. To give you a sense of impact, MI6 was just the third player in South Carolina history to win a consensus (AFCA, Walter Camp, Sporting News and Associated Press) All-American award.
  182.

183.
  184.

185. MI6 had an incredible 2011. Playing primarily as a defensive end, MI6 scored <strike>two</strike> three touchdowns. One touchdown came on quarterback sack fumble recovery and five-yard run, one on a fumble recovery in the end zone, and one touchdown a game-winning 68-yard rush on a fake punt. That play left <strike>CBS</strike> ESPN announcers scratching their heads trying to figure out the other number 6 on the South Carolina roster because the <strike>CBS</strike> ESPN announcers could not believe a defensive end would have the speed to out run a fast Georgia Bulldog defense for 68 yards.
  186.

187. MI6 was only seventh on the defense with 48 tackles. But he led the team with 15 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He also tied two others with 6 quarterback hurries. MI6 also had two pass interceptions and broke up 2 pass attempts. USC Stats.
  188.

189. During 2011, Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johnson, now a head coach at Southern Mississippi, moved MI6 to left defensive tackle on passing downs to create match-up pass-blocking problems for offensive linemen. Ellis had MI6 line up at left defensive tackle next to freakish freshman defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (6-6, 256). In this alignment, Ellis forced the blind side of opposing offensive lines to choose who (Clowney or MI6) would get a double-team. That proved to be an impossible task for most offensive lines. Using MI6 in this rush package allowed the 2011 Gamecock defense to consistently create a lot of quarterback pressure without blitzing.
  190.

191. The other starting defensive end, Devin Taylor and Ingram's backup, Clowney, return for the 2012 season. MI6 did not play every down. Therefore, the MI6 hole is a partial hole. The Gamecocks still have two of the same great defensive ends in 2012.
  192.

193. How will South Carolina fill the Ingram hole?
  194.

195. First, Clowney is now a starter instead of MI6's backup. As good as MI6 was for the Gamecocks, it must be noted that he did not force any fumbles in 2011. In contrast, his backup Clowney forced five fumbles. Clowney figures to be on the field even more often in 2012 than 2011. That cannot be good news for opposing defenses. Ingram's hole is going to be filled by Clowney getting more playing time. Thus, the MI6 hole will be adequately filled as long as Clowney is well-conditioned enough to play a lot more snaps.
  196.

197.

  198.
South Carolina lost the strength and conditioning coach, Craig Fitzgerald, who resigned. The Gamecocks promoted Joe Connolly, former Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, to lead conditioning. Spurrier stated, "We will not miss a beat with Coach Connolly in charge of our strength and conditioning program." One aspect of Connolly's conditioning program that will be scrutinized will be his ability to condition Clowney for more playing time. The more conditioned Clowney, the more of of the MI6 hole the Gamecocks will fill.
  199.

200. A good strength and conditioning coach is an artist. A good strength and conditioning coach does not just run a program for everyone. He must be able to recognize unique traits in an individual and design individualized training depending on the position and player.
  201.

202. Craig Fitzgerald and Joe Connolly together trained up Ingram to such an extent that by the time he undertook tests at the various pro-days he was able to run a 20 yard shuttle in 4.18 seconds. That is incredibly fast for a big man like Ingram. For example, the first defensive end taken in the 2012 NFL draft was North Carolina's Quinton Coples (16th overall), who achieved a relatively slower 4.8 in the same drill.
  203.

204. The 20-yard shuttle tests closing speed. It is a skill that goes hand and glove with a great pass rusher. Ingram led the Gamecocks in sacks the past two years. It is going to be hard to replace that explosiveness. A lot of the credit for Ingram's player development must go to the strength and conditioning he achieved at South Carolina. It goes to show you what a good program and hard work can accomplish.
  205.

206. Now the question for the 2012 Gamecocks is whether Connolly is as great a genius in making individualized conditioning a priority as was Fitzgerald. If he is, then there are several relatively unheralded players who have the potential to develop into great pass rushers like Ingram.
  207.

208. One player is red-shirt Junior Chaz Sutton (6-5, 248). Sutton is very fast for a lineman and could play defensive end if Clowney is moved to tackle on pass rushing downs. If he continues to progress as he has the past few years, Sutton could threaten the edge with his speed while defenses are forced to double team Clowney.
  209.

210. Sutton had 13 tackles in 2011, including three for loss and one quarterback hurry. USC Stats. He received the award in the spring as the "most improved" defensive lineman. Sutton could be difficult to block one on one. Sutton sees his chance and he is going for it.
  211.

212. Another player who will try to fill the MI6 hole is Sophomore Kelcy Quarles (6-4, 286), a defensive tackle. Quarles is a big play-maker from the tackle spot. In 2011, he had 28 tackles and four quarterback hurries. USC Stats. Thus, Clowney or Sutton could rush outside, and defenses would have to try to block the Quarles bull-rush one on one.
  213.

214. Like MI6, senior Aldrick Fordham (6-4, 269)is also capable of playing both end and tackle. In 2011, Fordham played mostly inside. He figures to move to backup defensive end, and will see significant more playing time in 2012, possibly rushing from inside on passing downs like MI6.
  215.

216. Not much is known about red shirt freshman Gerald Dixon (6-2, 272) and Deon Green (6-4, 290), or true freshman Darius English (6-6, 215), a Parade All American. Any might play depending on progress in the spring and fall practices.
  217.

218. MI6 had a great impact as a special teams player. Can the Gamecocks find another athlete like him on the 2012 roster? It is going to be pretty hard because MI6 was incredible on special teams.
  219.

220. Before finishing our discussion of MI6, it has to be said that besides his physical talent on the field, Melvin Ingram's leadership as 2011 team captain will be hard to replace.

We Cannot Equivocate About the Constitution

Happy Fourth

Don't forget the philosophy that inspired the Founding Fathers . . . individual liberty. 225.

226. "The real war is the war of ideas."
  227.

228. Even delegates pledged to Romney may freely vote for liberty when the 2012 GOP platform is created at the party convention in Tampa. A fair percentage of the pledged Romney delegates who going to the GOP Convention are Ron Paul people. Another fair percentage of delegates (no matter to whom they are pledged) agree with us on many issues.
  229.

230. Paul said the successes of his campaign over the past five years have just been magnificent.
The most important thing, I think, is the awakening of a whole new generation, excited about these views and who are participating. And . . . there's no way it's going to be stopped.

  231.
  232. In the video, he alerted us to the challenge issued by Rick Santorum in the form of a Washington Post report, Rick Santorum: Ron Paul supporters seeking convention fight by Felicia Sonmez. Without identifying any issue, Santorum vaguely warned about the need for "principled conservatives" to "counter-balance the effects of those Paul-people."
  233.

234. Ron Paul responded to Santorum's challenge by acknowledging Santorum's point. Ron Paul said, "We want to make our point. And it is true that the Santorum people are principled. . . . but they are also authoritarians. They want to use the government to impose their will on us as individuals."
  235.

236. Ron Paul goes on describe how the liberty movement has been so successful in the last five years, and why. He referenced the coming economic collapse. "We are in the middle of that now. The failure of Keynesianism, failure of central banking, failure of fiat money, [and] failure of authoritarianism." Paul stated the ongoing economic disintegration is creating a vacuum. He said, "we don't want the authoritarians to fill the vacuum."
  237.
I think what we do in the next five months is that we build and we continue to accumulate delegates, and alternates, fellow travelers.
  238.

239. We can't let up now. We have to present the case in a very positive way.
  240.

241. Our delegates are welled-versed. The know the philosophy. We know what the platform oughta say. It should be a different foreign policy, protection of civil liberties, [and] curtailing of Executive Branch power to go to war and run drone warfare, assassin[ate] American citizens, and promot[e] what's in the NDAA.
  242.

243. So many things that are crucial. We see an opening now to really have an impact. Not just this weekend, but the future for this country.
  244.

245. I think we are on the verge of really having a climatic ending of this campaign. [It] will be just the beginning of the end of the big government authoritarians if we do our job right.

/>There is a lot of fallout, consternation, anger about a recent e-mail sent by Ron Paul to folks in his campaign, followed by an statement by Senator Rand Paul (Ron Paul's son) that Mitt Romney will receive the GOP nomination and that he (Rand) would support Mitt Romney. These two events have caused many in the liberty movement to cry "betrayal" and to react viscerally against Rand Paul, and even Ron Paul.
  248.

249. However, people need to be pragmatic about the progress of the liberty movement. We have made tremendous inroads in the past five years or so. In fact, the liberty movement is full of young people who are involved in the GOP party politics, and who are going to create influence and affect change in the status quo of the establishment GOP platform. The neocons are in trouble and waning, and liberty is waxing.
  250.

251. Is there any real practical chance that Ron Paul can win the GOP nomination? Ron Paul himself said that he cannot in the email. Was that a betrayal, or recognition of the political reality? What advantages does the recognition of Romney's eventual nomination allow to the Ron Paul Campaign?
  252.

253. First, Ron Paul has not endorsed Mitt Romney. It remains to be seen if he will endorse him. However, Romney needs the endorsement because he needs the liberty movement to win the Presidential election. Romney has frequently observed that Ron Paul's followers are much more enthusiastic and energized than are the establishment people that follow his campaign. Romney's power is negative (anybody but Obama) while Paul's power is based on an idea. The idea is where the power is derived.
  254.

255. Rand Paul said he preferred Ron Paul his father but he would support Romney. Is that radical? No. Romney, with all his neocon and Fed attributes, is still an improvement over Obama. He will be a bigger improvement if his campaign can be influenced in the <strike>right</strike> freedom direction. Look at this Romney Campaign Press Release following Rand's endorsement:
  256.

257.
"Over the past three and half years, President Obama has made government more and more of a presence in our lives, and Americans can’t afford four more years of the same failed policies," Romney said. "As president, I will reform the federal government and make it smaller, simpler, and smarter. I am grateful for Sen. Paul’s support and look forward to working with him to get America back on the right track."
  Romney Campaign Press Release
  258.

259. I see nothing wrong with the sentiments expressed in this press release. In fact, it contradicts the neocon platform almost directly. It remains to be seen if this is mere rhetoric. However, it is certainly a step in the right direction by Governor Romney, and suggests that his position will defer to the liberty ideas espoused by both Ron Paul and Rand Paul.
  260.

261. The state GOP conventions have often been acrimonious as the neocon establishment goes through its death throes to keep liberty from encroaching into leadership position. However, the neocon movement is walking dead. Its intellectual foundation is crumbling now because of the power of Ron Paul's argument. It is a matter of time before it is completely destroyed.
  262.

263. That is not good news for President Obama as he also is a neocon. Obama has expanded government tremendously in his first term. The idea he would serve a second is truly frightening. Without any concern about re-election, Obama would have no restraint in his expansionist agenda. Thus, Rand Paul's statement he would support Romney was necessary.
  264.

265. Will Ron Paul also eventually endorse Romney? That will depend on some concrete steps by Romney toward the direction of liberty.
  266.

267. If nothing else, Romney has proven that he will change his political position if it means he will be elected. Romney needs the liberty movement. Watch for him to distance himself from the Federal Reserve and watch for him to make comments about getting our troops back home. These are political statements that will encourage Ron Paul to endorse him. If Romney moves in our direction, then we might even vote for him instead of Governor Gary Johnson.

  276.

277. Pitching. The Gamecock pitching staff is relatively well-rested as compared to the opponent. Clemson and Coastal must pitch their best starter in the noon game or they will risk elimination. It's do or die for them so they cannot afford to hold back anything. Clemson will likely throw Dominic Leone (6-4, 5.49) against Coastal. Clemson is also without their best starting pitcher, Kevin Brady (2.54, eleven starts). He threw over three innings (54 pitches), taking the loss yesterday. (See Clemson season statistics here.)
  278.

279. Coastal and Clemson will have used up one extra starting pitching, and possibly more relievers in the noon game today. For the sole survivor of those teams, pitching depth will be a major factor.
  280.

281. The Gamecocks, on the other hand, may have partially depleted their bullpen by pitching Price for more than three innings (68 pitches). The Gamecocks also pitched Beal and Webb in the victory yesterday. However, they threw only 19 and 22 pitches, respectively, so they could pitch today if needed.

NCAA Regional Mathup Game: Gamecocks v. 283.

284. The loser of this game will face Coastal Carolina in an elimination game.
  285.

286. Gossett, Clemson's starter, is a freshman righthander. According to Clemson's Gossett Bio Page, he was one of the "most decorated players in the 2012 incoming class [and ranked] #47 freshman in the nation in the preseason by Baseball America."
  287.

288. Gossett is 6-3 on the year and has started 9 games this year. Gossett is third on the Tigers in total innings pitched, and has a 4.50 earned run average. (See Clemson's statistics page.)
  289.

290. Gossett is a strike out pitcher. He averages 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings, and opponents hit only .227 against him.
  291.

292. Starting a flamethrower is probably a smart strategy by JackLeg. The fewer baseballs that the Gamecocks put into play, the lower the probability Clemson fielders will choke and commit errors trying to field them.
  293.

294. Gossett is a wild man on the mound. He has 9 wild pitches on the year, and has hit six batters. Besides that, Gossett allows almost five walks a game. That could spell doom for Clemson if the umpire has a tight strike zone.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://photontorpedotube.blogspot.com/2012/06/clemson-is-pitching-daniel-gossett.html' title='NCAA Regional Mathup Game: Gamecocks v. 300.
  301. Today's game at 1:00 p.m. at Carolina Stadium, between the Gamecocks and the LSU Tigers, will determine the SEC regular season champion. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
302.
303. The Gamecocks technically lead the SEC now by 1/2 game ahead of LSU and Kentucky. A Gamecock win means that the Gamecocks are SEC Champions. However, if LSU wins, then the Gamecocks will be 1/2 away from first and LSU will win at least a share of the SEC championship.

304. South Carolina will send junior RHP Colby Holmes (6-0, 3.29 ERA) to the mound on Saturday. LSU counters with sophomore RHP Ryan Eades (5-2, 3.75 ERA).

305. Mathematically, Kentucky, which has already dropped two games this weekend, can still share in the championship with LSU if they can beat Mississippi State today in Starkville.

Gamecock Baseball Season Championship to Be Decided on the Banks of Congaree

Whether the Gamecocks win an SEC baseball championship will be decided by the winner of the South Carolina -- LSU series beginning Thursday night ... and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Assuming a Gamecock series win, Kentucky would be the champion by just winning their series against the Bulldogs. Florida has been mathematically eliminated from contention.
  306.
307.
308. Kentucky is traveling to play a very tough Mississippi State Bulldog team. Even though the Bulldogs have no shot at an SEC regular season championship, their team will not roll over for Kentucky next weekend. Kentucky has not had to face the pressure of SEC championship baseball. The Bulldogs win at least two of those games against Kentucky, and maybe all three.
  309.
310.
311. That means if the Gamecocks sweep or win at least two games on the banks of the Congaree, they would win an SEC title. Here are the current standings:

  321. Like other berries, nutritional studies prove that mulberries are rich in antioxidants. In part for that reason, some have called the mulberry another super-food.
322.

Improbable because of the 1 - 5 start in conference play.
  332.
333.
334. On the road at Arkansas this weekend--a place with ravenous, enthusiastic fans that love their college baseball--the Gamecocks won two out of three in the series. In doing so, the Gamecock baseball team kept pace with LSU, which also won two of three on the road . . . at Ole Miss.
  335.
336.
337. Kentucky, which started the weekend tied for first, managed to salvage one game against Florida.
  338.
339.
340. There are four teams in this SEC baseball title race now. In all likelihood, only two of the four will receive a national seed from the NCAA. That is important because a national seed is guaranteed to host during the NCAA tournament as long as the seed survives by winning.
  341.
342.
343. Here are the updated standings.
  344.
345.
346.

  347.

  348.

  349.

  350.
351.
352. There are six conference games left in the 2012 season. The Gamecocks end the season at home against LSU.
  353.
354.
355. In the meantime, LSU plays at home against a feisty young Vandy team. The Gamecocks go on the road to face off with Georgia.
  356.
357.
358. Georgia just swept Auburn at home so it does not look like Athens is real friendly to visitors.
  359.
360.
361. There ain't no cake-walkin' to an SEC baseball title. You gotta earn it.
  362.
363.

Gamecocks Catch UK and LSU in SEC Baseball!

  364. The conference race started poorly for the Gamecocks. After two weekend series the team was in last place with a record of 1-5. Now the worm has turned and the Gamecocks are tied for first place with Kentucky and LSU. The standings are shown below.
  365.
  366.
367.

368.

  369.

  370.

  371.

  372.
  373.
  374. This weekend the Gamecocks swept last place Alabama. The Tide has the worst record in the SEC. With only nine conference games left, they will have a tough time even qualifying for the SEC tournament.

  375.

  376.

  377.

  378. Speaking of SEC tournament qualification, the orange area of the chart shows the loser section of the SEC standings. When it is all said and done, you don't want to be orange.

  379.

  380.

  381.

  382. The Gamecock baseball team now enters one of the toughest sections of its schedule. The next two weeks they play Arkansas and Georgia on the road. Arkansas, which just won a series against Florida is going to be a very tough team to beat.

  383.

  386. With Kentucky losing two of three to Vandy this past weekend, the race for the conference championship just got interesting.

Betrayal! 390. The House pulled an April's Fool surprise yesterday, inserting several onerous amendments before passing the so-called Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) bill. The law guts the Fourth Amendment and creates authority for social networking sites to engage in spying on Americans for the Federal government.
393.

  394. The entire tea party conglomeration of South Carolina Republicans voted in favor of the massive federal intrusion into Internet freedom. The tea party Republicans voted with Clyburn, a Democrat, giving even more power to the federal government in general, and the Obama executive branch in particular.

  395.

  396. It was a vote against Internet freedom made in a totally bass-ackward direction. Americans are finally waking up to the increasing amount of federal intrusion in our lives. People are fed up with it. The TSA abuses are firing up conservative talk radio. The stories of the Department of Labor meddling in farm chores, makes people mad. The people are not going to be happy when they learn the Republican House has just passed this collosally stupid legislation.

  397.

  398. It was also a really dumb move from a political standpoint. The idiot Republican leadership has just handed the Obama Administration a campaign issue. Obama has promised to veto the bill, and he is sure to demagogue Republicans for their willingness to infringe on our liberty. Hopefully, the Senate Republicans will figure out they have just cut their potential nominee's throat by voting in favor of more government and increased spying.

  399.

  400. The Obama veto threat is hypocrisy, no question. Obama has overseen an incredibly large expansion in executive power. However, most Americans are sheeple and have no idea of the scope of his administration. He does not admit it. Therefore, there is a good chunk of our population who will fall for the misleading Obama Administration rhetoric. And that makes the Republican decision to intrude and stomp all over our Internet at the behest of Internet corporations like Facebook all the worse. Read more here, here, and here.

  404. The Gamecocks moved into third place in the SEC baseball standings this weekend, just two games behind Kentucky.

  410.
411.

  412.

  413.
  414. The Gamecock baseball team--a team many counted out as a rebuilding team early in the year--completed its second straight SEC series sweep. This week the Gamecocks swept Auburn at Plainsman's Park.
  415.
  416. The Gamecocks are on a roll. They have won eight straight SEC games.

  417.

  418.

  419.

  420. Improbable. Unlikely. Remote.

  421.

  422.

  423.

  424. Those adjectives described the Gamecocks chances of winning a 2012 SEC baseball title earlier this year. But those adjectives do not apply now.

  425.

  426.

  427.

  428. Now it's . . . possible, foreseeable, and doable.

  429.

  430.

  431.

  432. First-place, and probable national number 1, Kentucky, is in the driver's seat. The Cats just completed a home series win over LSU (second place). But the UK schedule is pretty tough over the last four weekends: at Vandy, Florida, 'Bama, and at Mississippi State.

  433.

  434.

  435.

  436. Meanwhile, after the Tide home-stand, the Gamecocks travel to Arky and UGA. They finish up at home against second-place LSU.

  437.

  438.

  439.

  440. Kentucky might stumble. But if they do, the Gamecocks will still have to earn it. The bats are heating up. You have to like the Gamecock's chances.

Gamecock Baseball Moves into Tie for Fourth Place

  441. The sweep of Mississippi State enabled the Gamecock baseball team to slug its way upward in the SEC standings. The team now is in a tie for fourth place overall in the conference standings.
442.
443.
444.

  445.

  446.
447. This year, ten SEC teams will qualify for the SEC baseball tournament. The NCAA usually invites all of the qualifiers. However, it is probably pretty unlikely the NCAA will invite ten SEC teams to the NCAA tournament . . . even if they are ten of the best 64 teams that qualify.
448.
449. The Gamecocks have five more three-game, SEC series to play this year. If the Gamecocks can win three of those, especially if one of them is LSU, they should have a legitimate shot at hosting a regional and maybe a super-regional NCAA tournament. The host will enjoy a home-field advantage so that would be a strong accomplishment. A win against LSU in the final series of this season would give the team strong momentum leading to the NCAA playoffs.
450.
451. The most encouraging fan-factor I take away from the series sweep over Mississippi State was in the improved infield defense. I really like the way Vergason is playing second. He looks fluid out there, and his range is outstanding. DB made several nice picks at third-base. Flapjack, at short, also made some nice plays, one of which was nearly a web-gem except for the low throw got away from Walker at first. If Walker had made that play on flapjack's bad throw, the place would have come unglued. The hitting uptick is a bonus, cherry-on-top.
452.
453. The Gamecocks are technically still in the race for an SEC title. However, they are three games behind the leaders (Kentucky and LSU).
