53.
The Mystical Light of the Baal Shem Tov

 54.

 55.
Section 23.

 56.
On another occasion, the cantor told Reb Elimelech that when the Baal Shem Tov would look at any object, such as a bench or a table, he could tell all the thoughts that the craftsman had when he made that object. Reb Elimelech was astounded by this. Later in the conversation, the cantor told Reb Elimelech how the Baal Shem Tov could gaze from one end of the earth to the other.

 57.
Once, when his students were sitting with him, the Baal Shem Tov chuckled a little, as he often did. His students asked him why he chuckled. He said that in a certain city, in a very distant land, a nobleman had spent several years building a beautiful palace. And just a few minutes before, a Tzaddik had been on his way to the synagogue to pray. It had started to hail heavily, so the Tzaddik took shelter in the palace that the nobleman had spent so long building.

 58.
When the hail storm stopped, the Tzaddik left the palace and continued on to the synagogue. As soon as he left, the palace collapsed.

 59.
“How can I not laugh over how much G-d’s direction of the world is hidden? The purpose of this great building was to give shelter to this Tzaddik for a short while. During that time, the Tzaddik rectified all of the sparks of holiness that were in the stones which formed the sides of the palace. Once the sparks were rectified, the stones no longer needed to remain standing. That is why the palace immediately collapsed.”

 60.
Later, the cantor continued, we saw in the newspaper the story of that palace and its unexplained collapse. It had happened at the moment that the Baal Shem Tov had laughed.

 61.
Then, the cantor stood up and swore that once, while he and the other students studied Torah with the Baal Shem Tov, flames had risen around them. The flames remained until they were so purified that they heard the Torah from the Rebbe as the Children of Israel had received it at Mount Sinai – with thunder and lightening and the mighty blasts of the shofar! In fact, the cantor went on to say that because the sounds at Mount Sinai were Divine and never ceased. However, a person needed holiness and purity to hear them. Reb Elimelech replied, “I have not achieved that spiritual level. Though it comes as no surprise, that the spiritual service and holiness of our Master and Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Baal Shem Tov was extremely great. Moreover, his holy practices were from that pure place, the Nestur River, and from Achiya HaShiloni. Fortunate is the person who merits that state.”

 62.
The G-d-fearing who read this will understand that all the above-mentioned levels, or similar ones, were attained by Reb Elimelech.
235.
When a Shadchan makes a match for a couple the halacha is that he must be paid. This is generically called Sirsur which means “broker” and the Shulchan Aruch stipulates that a Sirsur must be paid. After giving a list of examples, the Rema (CM 264:4) says that any deed or favor a friend does for you, you must pay him and you cannot say that you undertook it for free since we never made up beforehand.

 236.
What if two people are in a fight and after much effort with both people you manage to bring them together again and settle their differences, must they pay you if you did not stipulate initially that you would like to be paid?

 237.
The Shevet HaKehosi (3:310) says that although the Nesivos HaMishpat that says that this is only for something positive but saving him from damage does not earn you any fee, nevertheless in this case you are doing something very positive, you are making him and old-new friend.

 238.
Even so says the Shevet HaKehosi, in this case you need not pay him. Since it is not the minhag to pay for this service nowadays you can’t demand money even if one or both of the parties approached you to get involved. The mitzva of making so peace among friends is so great that unless the broker specifically said up front that he would like to be paid, he is not paid.

 342.
Rav Menashe Klein: A Day At The Races?

 343.
Rav Menashe Klein discusses (Mishneh Halachos 6:270) if it is permitted to go to the race track and bet on horses or even to watch horse racing just for fun. The Mekor for this Halacha is a Mishna in Sanhedrin (3:3) that says Mafrichei Yonim, pigeon flyers, are Pasul for Eidus. The gemara says that according to one explanation this means pigeon racing for money and it applies to any other animal racing including horses. The Rambam (Eidus 10) and Shulchan Aruch (CM 34:16) say this only applies to people who are not gainfully employed and do this for a living. However says Rav Klein that while the threshold to be pasul for eidus is that it must be your means of earning a livelihood, nevertheless it is assur to bet on these races even if it is just a hobby.

 344.
This all implies that if you are merely going to be entertained by the spectacle and are not involved in any betting, then it would be permitted. However says Rav Klein, there is a Mahari Bruna that speaks about this. He says that watching horses race is not assur because it is educational and can teach you how to ride horses faster for a living and to run from your enemies. The Mahari Bruna then says that if your intention in going is simply to enjoy a jousting match then it might be assur. In our case says Rav Klein since there is no redeeming value whatsoever it is certainly assur.

 345.
This issur he says, would extend to all spectator sports and would fall under he issur in the gemara Avodah Zara (18b) of going to stadiums since it is considered Moshav Leitzim, which Rashi says is Bitul Torah. Moreover, he says, even if you were to watch it on television from the comfort of your own home, which would eliminate the issur of Moshav Leitzim, still you will be left with Bitul Torah and anyone with Yiras Shamayim should stay far away.

 346.
Important Note: We try to convey the Tshuva to the best of our ability. We admit that our understanding may not be accurate. One should learn the tshuva to verify the accuracy of our interpretation. Please also understand that this Tshuva may not be the final word on this topic. 468.
The Mishna Brura is a Sefer that stands in its own league. It is a sefer on Halacha that has merited in a relatively very short time to be accepted by all of Klal Yisroel without exception. Moreover, his words are treated like a Rishon, like Rashi or the Rambam where every word is pored over and analyzed.

 469.
Rav Yitzchok Kaminetzky says that this is a reward Midah Kineged Midah, for the tzaddik who woke up the world and reminded them that each and every word that comes out of our mouth packs incredible power, both for good and bad. When our words become more important to us, then they will become more important to Hashem as well and be held up for distinction by our peers and even our own family. Wouldn’t that be nice?

 594.
When you go out to war against your enemies, and the L-rd your G-d gives them into your hand, so that you will take captives. (Deuteronomy 21:10)

 595.
Through the very devices of the evil inclination, the evil inclination itself can be defeated. If it is quick in its work to entice a person to sin, in order to fulfill G-d’s commandment (as the Zohar relates with the parable of the prostitute1), then a person should also learn to be quick in his efforts not to listen to the evil inclination, which is the will of G-d [for him].
596. Toldos Yaakov Yosef, Bechukosai

 597.
1The Zohar (2:163a) defines the nature of the evil inclination with a parable: “This is like a king who had an only son, whom he loved very much. He ordered him not to associate with any evil woman, for whoever drew near to an evil woman is not fit to enter the king’s chamber. The son promised that he would fulfill his father’s will in love. Outside the king’s palace was a prostitute, of beautiful appearance and form. Days past, and the king said, ‘I want to see my son’s commitment to me.’ He called that prostitute and told her to seduce his son. She followed the king’s son and began to hug him and kiss him, and to seduce him in many different ways. If that son is upright, and upholds his father’s orders, he will berate her and not listen to her, and push her away. Then the father will be happy with his son, and bring him into his chamber, and give him gifts and great honor. Who caused the son to receive such honor? That prostitute.”

 673.
Shabbos Rosh Hashana – No Shofar This Year, Is It Bad For Us?

 674.
We all know the power of the Shofar to confuse the Satan at the critical moment that our fate is being determined by Hashem. “Kol Shana She’ein Tokin Bit’chilasa Meiri’in La B’Sofa”, any year that we do not blow the Shofar on Rosh HaShana we will have a bad year at the end (Rosh HaShanah 16b). So where does that leave us this year when Rosh HaShana falls out on Shabbos and we do not blow Shofar?

 675.
The Magid Rav Shlomo Levenstein brings from the Aruch LaNer on Chumash that if you look at all the years that Rosh HaShana came out on Shabbos you will find that it is either a very good year or a very bad year, and he brings a number of examples. Why is this, asks the Aruch LaNer? He answers with a Mashal.

 676.
An important minister of the King was put on trial for committing a very serious crime which carried a severe penalty. The trial looked like an open and shut case and the minister had no where to turn for help as he was disgraced and all the King’s men turned against him. He was doomed. But all was not lost. His wife was respected by the King and she would plead his case before the King hoping for mercy. Sure enough she approached the King and the verdict was overturned and her husband was set free.

 677.
Shortly afterward another minister was also convicted a serious crime. He however was not worried. He knew what happened in the previous trial and knew that his wife who had similar standing could easily save him. His devoted wife arranged an audience with the king and began to plead her husband’s case. As soon as she began to speak the King cut her off and asked her why she had a bruise on her forehead. Reluctant to talk about it she saw she had know choice and told the King that her husband was responsible for it. Enraged the King immediately ended the audience and saw to it that the man was prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and he was put to death for his original crime.

 678.
When Rosh HaShanah is on Shabbos we are doomed to failure in our trial since we are lacking the keys to a good verdict the Shofar. However since it is Shabbos, the Shabbos who is beloved by Hashem, pleads to Hashem on our behalf. Hashem will do anything that Shabbos asks including let us off the hook and granting us the sweetest of years. But if Hashem notices that Shabbos has been badly abused by us, not only will Shabbos not help us, it will make the King more determined to punish us for all our crimes.

 679.
Let’s commit to treat Shabbos with the respect that the beloved of our King deserves. Let’s refrain from Chilul Shabbos whether in our actions or merely speaking or acting not in the spirit of Shabbos Kodesh. if we take care of Shabbos, Shabbos will take care of us. If not we will be left alone at our trial alone and without any horn to toot.

 784.
Chelkas Yaakov: Can You Break A Shidduch If The Girl Lied About Her Age?

 785.
The Chelkas Yaakov (EH 80) was asked about a girl who was supposedly 28 years old a the time of her engagement and when when it was time to get married three years later it turned out she was 36 and not 31. Does the Chosson have halachic grounds to break the engagement?

 786.
He answers that we don’t find anywhere in the gemara (Chulin or Kesuvos) among the list of Mumim, blemishes that age is considered a Mum. However the Chassam Sofer says that the gemara in Bava Basra says that a women who is over 40 years old and never married cannot have children therefore not only can you break a shidduch but even if they were already married you should divorce her because of the mitzva of Pru U’Rvu. Other than that he says that breaking an engagement because of age is not justified.

The Taz explains that since the proprietor is only there during the day and doesn’t spend his nights there it is Patur from a Mezuzah.
