50.

READ MORE: Liverpool reach agreement with Feyenoord to make Arne Slot their new manager

READ MORE:Jurgen Klopp sends clear message to Arne Slot as Liverpool appointment nears

Beyond winning every major trophy available to him on Merseyside, the real measure of Klopp's success will be how he re-energised a club and in particular a fanbase who had become jaded in the years leading up to his 2015 appointment.[BREAK]

As a result, the idea of following such a glittering period is too daunting a task to take on, but having restructured the club accordingly in recent weeks, the post-Klopp era is beginning now to take real shape with the expected appointment of Arne Slot, of Feyenoord.

The Dutchman has, quite refreshingly, made little secret of his desire to see the two clubs reach an agreement over a compensation package - which arrived last night - and the clarity of his recent comments suggest he is now surely just days away from being confirmed as Klopp's replacement.[BREAK]

There have of course been questions asked about whether Slot can translate his methodology from the Eredivisie to the most unforgiving league in Europe but if you supposedly trust the people tasked with making the big calls, like Edwards - who is now the de-facto head of Liverpool FC as FSG's first 'CEO of football' - then that same faith must also be given to who they believe is right for the job.[BREAK]

Comparisons with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, for example, are largely baseless.[BREAK]

But the biggest task now lies not with the man being asked to follow on from Klopp but with the people who believe Slot is the right person to do so.[BREAK]

To delve back into the United comparisons, the changeover from Alex Ferguson to David Moyes was the beginning of a downturn that has continued at quite a rate for the last decade.

 65.

When asked at which point a club gives up on a â\x80\x9cprojectâ\x80\x9d, a mixture of current and former directors at Premier League clubs tend to arrive at the same answer.

â\x80\x9cWhen the fans say so,â\x80\x9d says one of them, who would like to remain nameless because he does not really want to admit publicly that, in the past, he has helped pull the trigger because of the pressure he and his colleagues were under.

On that occasion, there had been a well-laid-out plan and the club were convinced they were following the right path.[BREAK]Yet he is a reminder it is a results-based business and the smartest clubs always have a succession plan if and when things go wrong â\x80\x94 one that involves numerous options because football, after all, is a fast-moving world.

Something to consider, perhaps, especially for anyone with an interest in Tottenham Hotspur.

They face Arsenal in the North London derby tomorrow (Sunday) at the end of a season which initially promised so much â\x80\x94 born of the early achievements of a new manager â\x80\x94 and, despite perhaps not quite living up to those raised expectations, should still ultimately be reflected upon as progress.

There was a consensus at Spurs at the start of the season that, following the summer sale of one of the greatest players in their history, any form of European qualification at the end of it would be considered a success â\x80\x94 and they are on course to achieve that.
Tottenhamâ\x80\x99s excellent start under Ange Postecoglou raised expectations (Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)
For Tottenham fans, the example of neighbours and rivals Arsenal is worth consideration, given this is their second title attempt in as many years.

In Mikel Artetaâ\x80\x99s first full season in charge, Arsenal finished eighth with 61 points; one point above where Spurs â\x80\x94 in fifth with six games to go â\x80\x94 find themselves now.[BREAK]Perhaps crucially for Arteta, he had won the FA Cup at the end of his debut campaign following his mid-season appointment, proving he could deliver trophies and therefore buying himself more time.

Yet, by December 2020, after a year under Arteta, Arsenal were just four points above the Premier Leagueâ\x80\x99s relegation zone having played more games than the teams below them.

That 2020-21 season was almost entirely played behind closed doors because of restrictions on crowds related to the COVID-19 pandemic.[BREAK]Yet he has also done a lot of work improving the working relationships with previously disillusioned staff.

In Arsenalâ\x80\x99s toughest period under him, the top brass did not bow to pressure even if the particular circumstances at the time ensured that dissident fan voices were confined to angry reactions on social media.

Arsenal have never been a club who change managers often, but it is different across London at Chelsea â\x80\x94 who endured the end of an era when Roman Abramovich was forced to sell up in the summer of 2022.

New owners BlueCo, a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, wanted to change things, and the hire of Graham Potter that September was evidence of that.

Only four years earlier, Potter had been in charge of Ostersunds in Sweden.[BREAK]But City had been attempting to secure him as their manager, and Lionel Messi as a player, at various points since the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak is, was and seemingly always will be genuinely convinced that Guardiola is the right man to lead his club and has never done anything but be supportive by trying to meet his needs.

Yet in Marti Perarnauâ\x80\x99s latest book about Guardiola, he reveals that the manager was worried he would be sacked in his 2016-17 debut season if City â\x80\x94 who had already lost 4-0 at Camp Nou â\x80\x94 did not beat Barcelona in the reverse fixture a couple of weeks later to give themselves a good chance of progressing from their Champions League group.[BREAK]Guardiola subsequently discovered that they could only carry out half of this business in the season after he joined, with the rest of the revamp to be completed ahead of year two.
Guardiola feared he might lose his job ahead of a meeting against his former club in 2016 (Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)
City knew the first campaign, in which Guardiola led the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League, would be relatively difficult.

 70.
Klopp was praising his players for their resilience during a long season: Liverpool played 63 games in all competitions, starting in mid-August and ending in late May.

Those two domestic cups were nearly part of a quadruple, with Liverpool losing the Champions League final (1-0 to Real Madrid in Paris) and finishing second to Manchester City in the Premier League, despite earning 92 points â\x80\x94 the second-most by any Premier League runners-up, after their 97 in 2018-19.
Liverpool only trailed seven times in 2018-19 (Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images)
Liverpool recovered 20 points from losing position in 2021-22, winning five and drawing five of the 12 games in which they fell behind.[BREAK]The notion that Liverpoolâ\x80\x99s comebacks in the current season â\x80\x94 already taking the fourth-most points in a single Premier League campaign from losing positions (27, with seven wins) â\x80\x94 are the hallmark of champions is a myth that needs busting.
Liverpool have claimed 27 points from losing positions this season (Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
In the 31 Premier League seasons, there have only been three instances of the title going to the team to recover the most points from losing positions.

There are, in reverse chronological order: Manchester United in Sir Alex Fergusonâ\x80\x99s final season in 2012-13 (29 points, nine wins and two draws), Arsenal in their 2003-04 Invincibles season (21 points, six wins and three draws), and United again in 1999-00 (24 points, six wins and six draws), though this was the joint-most with Arsenal, who they beat to the title that season by 18 points.
Arsenalâ\x80\x99s Invincibles celebrate winning the league at White Hart Lane in April 2004 (Odd Anderson/AFP via Getty Images)
They are exceptions which prove a rule true: that champions are champions because they largely go ahead in games and see them out.[BREAK]It was the exception to the rule, with Liverpool leading at half-time in 24 of 38 games that season â\x80\x94 they went on to win 23 of them.

Taking the average Premier League champions from the competitionâ\x80\x99s 31 completed seasons, they fall behind in close to 11 games and earn around 14 points from losing position.[BREAK]With the average Premier League title won with 88 points, the proportion of points won from losing positions typically accounts for 15 per cent.

Tellingly, the proportion of Liverpoolâ\x80\x99s total points won from losing positions has been higher in each of the four seasons since their title win than it was in that 2019-20 campaign, partly because they have fallen behind more too.

â\x80\x9cI prefer to be 5-0 in the final moments, but thatâ\x80\x99s tricky,â\x80\x9d Klopp said recently.[BREAK]It is a slightly extreme example to demonstrate, but compare that to when they score first, 102 points (2.68ppg) across a full season, and the contrast is stark.
(Michael Regan/Getty Images)
Excluding this season, there have been 18 instances of a team recovering at least 22 points from losing positions in a Premier League season.[BREAK]This was despite, at worst, hitting 86 points (2020-21) and, at their best, being centurions (2017-18).

Recovering points from losing positions has become a common trend across the Premier League this season, as more teams become attack-minded and less risk-averse defensively.
