I am sorry

First of all... let's get some basics out of the way.

If your nail tech, or maybe you're the nail tech, is providing proper prep, has consistently used high quality products that yield high quality results, we have to take a look at the other culprit: the user. Because, the reality, is that your nail tech sees you once over the span of 3-4 weeks on average, and there are MANY hours between then. Why, then, are your nails breaking or cracking, or scuffing up, or lifting at the tip, or losing their shape??????

Wear and tear, baby. Wear and tear. That's the simple answer.

"I woke up and it was broken." "I didn't feel it break." "I don't remember hitting it." I get it. Who is constantly paying attention to activities of daily living to see when and where this all happened? Ain't nobody got time for that! The mystery cannot be solved! Ok now I'm just being dramatic, but who are we kidding, you're here for the drama ;).

Remember when you used your nail to peel that orange? Oh, hey... let me just open this box real quick by ripping into this tape with my nail. Why, yes, my nails click and clack a little while I'm typing.. all day, every day at work. Laundry? Didn't know that could be a culprit. The reality is every time we grab things and use our nails, we are creating pressure, and wearing away a little at a time. Over time, as our nails grow out and the apex moves forward... wait a second. Have I even explained the apex? Um, yea, let's get into that a little bit.

Oh the apex. The beautiful apex. It is what dreams are made of. It is the beauty of a structured nail. A trained technician will ensure the apex is done properly, of the right size, at the right placement of the nail to provide balance and strength. This plays an important role in the "why" structured gel manis are so strong and last so long.

This is my drawing of an apex that can be created over a natural nail (Please see dotted line). Please don't laugh at my drawing. I don't have drawing software and this took me an hour. But you get it, right?
This is a balanced apex (mostly) and how your nails should look when a fresh enhancement is applied (i.e. structured gel overlay)

As the apex grows out of place, the nail enhancement is weakened, therefore, the risk of cracks and breaks increases. I know my clients have heard me say this many-a-times: natural nails are high maintenance, and the longer the nails, the higher the maintenance. This is mostly why. When that apex is no longer balanced, nails become "heavy", which may lead to breaks and cracks at the stress point. If this is happening to you more than occasionally, we gotta look at the maintenance of it. To correct that, either that length is just not quite for you, or you need to come in sooner for a rebalance. BUT ALSO, what you do daily matters.

Back to our original point... Are you protecting your nails? Are you moisturizing? Lotion isn't gonna cut it, you know. Nails are porous, but not to a point where lotion can really penetrate the layers and crevices. You need cuticle oil to keep everything moisturized. Are you wearing gloves when possible? Not just to protect the top coat, but to keep your nails from being in water too much. Why does that matter? Let us now take a moment to talk about that.
Dry, cold weather can have a great effect on the dryness of nails, but so can water and chemical exposure. Again, nails are porous. They can absorb, and just like a sponge, they expand and contract as they absorb and dry out. This constant movement can also weaken the nail plate underneath your gel, and cause separation, which then causes issues with cracking and breaking. Also, some cleaning chemicals can cause gel to soften over time.

So I would say, if you're in the business of maintaining your nails as beautiful and intact for as long as possible, protection and moisturization play important roles. Wear the gloves, avoid the pressures, use the cuticle oil (at least twice a day). Also, staying hydrated is super important. Just like when you are hydrated enough to have glowing skin, you can have healthier nails/cuticles.

Otherwise, it's the small things you are doing, and the big things you're not doing, that are causing that crack you "don't know how it happened". Or that break that happened as you slept. Or the... well, you know. All of the above.

So to sum it up: Protect and Hydrate. That's it!

Everything plays a part, and the amount of work you choose to put in plays a role on how healthy your nails are over time. But, maybe this can provide a helpful insight to the why of some of the problems you might be experiencing. Alright I think thats it, but let me know if you have any more questions!

Bye! <3 Mely

It's Giveaway Time!

https://www.rockyournails.org/blog/its-giveaway-time

https://www.rockyournails.org/blog/its-giveaway-time#comments

Uncategorized

Welcome everyone! Where to start? Firstly, you should know I have already done an in-depth post with videos on applying press-ons from start to finish. In that view I chose to highlight using glue. So this post is going to focus more on options for temporary use, mainly because I really wanted to test these things out for fun!!!!

I need to start with some personal history.
I’ve personally worn press-ons only a handful of times in my life. My favorite way of wearing them was with a kit I purchased at walmart, which came with double-sided glue-on tabs. These were paper thin and they felt great, but of course, they had only lasted a couple of hours.
Another type of tab I remeber using was the (and is quite popular) jelly-like sticky tabs. Again, stick on two sides, and adhere significantly stronger that the paper-thin ones. However, in my experience (and years ago) they created gaps on all sides, because they did not really fit my full natural nail, and felt squishy, but they did have a strong hold. I can’t say I liked my hair getting caught every time I touched it though. I have recently heard many people say this is their preferred method to apply them, so keep in mind products are most likely different from when I tried them about 20 years ago!!
And lastly, nail glue. Glue is great, but I did not used to take care of my nails way back then, so I can’t say I cared about the damage it caused when I inevitably ripped them off when I was done. Because damage will definitely happen if you just pull them off.

Now I care about my nails. Even though nail glue is still a fantastic option for long-wear use of press-ons, I wanted to see what other products we could use to re-use! Because maybe you’d like a REALLY nice set to be used for special occasions. Or maybe you want to wear them on the weekends but not to work. You know, like strip lashes, or clip on hair extensions. Is there a way to apply nails in this manner, then take them off and save them for future use?
YES!!!!
Im gonna share what I used, and hopefully you find something that fits your need.

1. The first thing I tried- Craft tape.
This is a double sided tape that is very similar in idea to press-on tabs, except it's a whole roll you can cut and shape to your exact measurements.

2. The most accessible: Eyelash adhesive! Easy to aquire, easy to carry. The one I tried is from House of Lashes, however, this has piqued my interest into other adhesives I want to try!

3. The one I feel should've been obvious: Prosthetic adhesive! You heard me... prosthetic adhesive!!! Why is this not more common?

4. The last thing I tried is hardly worth mentioning... it was craft liquid adhesive from the dollar store. I wanted to have this as a great option, but it failed deeply.

If you see my video "How to Re-Use Your Press-Ons - Let's Try Some Products" you can see how each of them applied and how they performed!

In summary, my favorite was the crafting tape because it had a very strong hold. In second place was the prosthetic adhesive, and not too far behind, the eyelash glue! Please let me know if you try any of these products!

Don't forget to check out these other videos related to Press-On Nails:
How To Apply Your Press-Ons With Glue
How To Size Your Nails For Press-Ons

How to Properly Size Your Nails For Press-Ons

https://www.rockyournails.org/blog/how-to-properly-size-your-nails-for-press-ons

https://www.rockyournails.org/blog/how-to-properly-size-your-nails-for-press-ons#comments

Press-Ons

Hello there! Welcome! If you are here, I am hoping it's because you are ready to have a little bit of fun! At this point of 2020, I have seen how the press-on nail game has changed, and I am so impressed! It's been something that's been on my "maybe someday" list... and now it's here! And I am so excited, because I think that press-ons have much to offer! Today I want to focus on how to properly measure your nails, so you have the perfect fit!

This is only one part of three parts to my press-on nails series. To learn how to prep your nails and apply them go here. If you're interested in how to re-use your nails, click here.

OK, HERE'S THE MOST IMPORTANT INFO:
Well-fitting press-ons should fit comfortably, and should cover your entire nail bed. It should not fall short when fitting from side to side, but should also not fit so loose that it touches the skin. For the best fit, you need to measure from sidewall to sidewall (edge to edge from side to side), on the widest part of your nail bed, following your natural curve. This is true no matter what method you choose to use.

Some other important details I want to share, is to consider that nail artists may create press-ons from all different kinds of nail tips. There are a lot of brands on the market, and within each brand, and between each brand, there are different shapes and lengths to consider. What this means is... nails are not one size fits all! Which is why it's important to measure your nails. The process may seem a bit tedious, but once you get the hang of it, it's quite easy. And well worth it!

What will you encounter?
Nail artists have different options. They may sell:

Full sets of 20 non-customized nails (no measuring needed as you receive all sizes)

Pre-made sets that are typically sold as small, medium, and large sets. This means you may get some customization as far as art or designs, and you can make the sizes work for your nails, but they may be slightly off.

Sizing kit option for the buyer. This may be included in your pricing, or you may need to purchase separately. You'd fit each fingernail to a size, following the guidelines above, make note of what number matches each nail for left and right hands, then make those numbers available to your nail artist.

Option for you to measure your own nails. There are two ways to do this, based on the supplies you have available

Option 1:
Use a soft, flexible measuring tape. Using the millimeters side, measure from edge to edge with the guidelines from above, and write down the width for each nail.

Option 2:
Use regular clear tape to measure in the same method. Once you've placed the tape following the curve of your nail, use a permanent marker to mark at each edge from side to side. Once that's done, remove the tape and then stick onto a straight ruler to take your measurements in millimeters. Again, write down the width for each nail.

Here's an example for my middle finger on my left hand:
Using a sizing kit, I was a size 3 on that particular nail shape and size
When I used the soft measuring tape to measure, the width was 14 mm
When I used the regular tape and ruler method, the width was 14 mm
I, then, measured the widest part on the inside of the size 3 press-on nail, and it was 14 mm wide

All measurements were consistent and I was quite happy with the results. Ofcourse, for visuals, please watch linked video above!

I hope this was informational to you, or that it helped answer some questions you may have had!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

Feel free to check out these other videos related to press-ons:
How to Apply Press-ons Using Glue
How to Re-use Your Press-ons
