Many thanks, we appreciated that very much. The release notes make clear that an Intel based Mac is required. And as usual we already have requests for Mac’s with new M1 chip. HCL Notes does not (yet) run on Mac’s with the brand new M1 chips. </p> <p>But no reason to despair, there is a workaround how to start Notes applications on Macs with M1 chips. Just run HCL Nomad for iPadOS! </p> <p>Unfortunately HCL Nomad cannot be installed directly from the App Store under Big Sur. You have to accept a small detour (see chapter <em>Installing Apps Not Available Through the Mac App Store</em> <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/install-any-ios-app-m1-mac/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>). After upgrading from Domino 10.0.1FP3 to 11.0.1 on RHEL7, DAOS no longer worked correctly and DBMT moved all attachments back into the mail, which of course required a lot more disk space and backup volume. First measure was to stop DBMT to prevent further movement. All measures we had taken like rebuilding the DAOS catalog did not help.</p> <p>Intuitively, we suspected that DAOS has the impression that it can’t read and/or write to its drive, but we see that it does. (All NLO files seem to be created normally). The logs said:<br><code>The database /usr/local/notesdata/mail/xxxx.nsf was unable to write to file /usr/local/daos/0038/3982A6E960B06118C1258583003DE6AB5973982A.nlo: Release 11.0.1 ...</code><br>In preparation for the downgrade back to V10, we rather accidentally came across that the reason could be in the <code>lost+found</code> folder. </p> <p>After some searching we found this 11 year old APAR:<br><a href="https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/LO41779">https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/LO41779</a></p> <p>We removed the <code>lost+found</code> folder and DAOS works as before now. It seems like this is a regression that was reintroduced with Domono v11. Domino v10 behaves differently or has no problems at all with the same folder structure. Domino/Notes V11, Sametime V11 and Connections 6.5 have been available since the end of last year and Notes 11 has so far proven to be very stable. Everyone we gave a look at Notes 11 was positively surprised.</p> <p>Almost overlooked in all the new releases is that finally the Connections plugins for HCL Notes have been updated, also for macOS. Since 2018 the plugins have not worked reliably on Mac. Why these important, integrative functionalities were not paid attention to anymore, remained unclear to me. Depending on the operation which was executed using files functions, Notes froze and had to be killed and restarted. The plugins are working fine again. Files can be split directly from emails back into connections and links to files can be created and sent directly in emails with drag&drop as before.</p></div></div></div></div> <p>Access rights can again be set and viewed directly from Notes. Activities and status updates also work with the new plugins with Notes 11 and Notes 10. Status updates can also be posted directly from the macOS Finder status bar. We discussed the use of Connections in the different areas of the University of Zurich and showed the diversity of our University with different scenarios for Connections usage. A diversity that also amazed our audience and brought us into lively exchange during the whole conference.</p><figure class="wp-block-embed-speaker-deck wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-speaker-deck"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"><div style="max-width: 1335px;"><div style="left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.1972%;"><iframe title=" How the University of Zurich enables users to use Connections – openly and decentrally managed " src="//speakerdeck.com/player/03f374cd366a4e9dbfcb8d8e23c6907c" style="border: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;" allowfullscreen="" scrolling="no" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe></div></div></div></figure> <p>From the very beginning, the conference has focused on our customer stories and has allowed them to have their say. Another remarkable keynote was given by Stefanie Preisinger from Continental (my preferred tyre manufacturer for my racing bike). Continental, like other large companies in Germany relies on Connections as an Enterprise Social Network. Stefanie was not the only one who showed how to not only rely on one solution, but how to integrate solutions today. Continental is currently introducing Office 365, but continues to rely on Connections and integrates Office 365. In other words, there is no either-or way, but a targeted and conscious both-and.</p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Integration</h4> <p>This is exactly the way HCL will go with Connections in the future. It was the first major conference since HCL acquired IBM’s entire Collaboration portfolio and HCL first talked on a larger public scale about the evolution of Connections. HCL has made it clear how they position themselves: “PEOPLE POWER YOUR BUSINESS – HCL CONNECTIONS POWERS YOUR PEOPLE!”</p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Connections 6.5</h4> <p>As in the Domino/Notes segment, HCL is aware of the need to invest quickly in further development. Even though the stagnation in the Connections area lasted less long than in the Domino/Notes area, promises have remained open and a backlog can also be seen in the Connections area. It is therefore all the more pleasing how quickly HCL is making progress in this area, too, and is disclosing a roadmap that has been very positively received. HCL has proven that promises are delivered and has announced a new version 6.5 for Connections for this year. Considerable what will be offered in such a short time. In addition to a modernized editor, a new function to invite external users and a new search engine (elastic search), the partial integration of Kudos boards is especially pleasing. Activities gets “boards” with Activities Plus, without having to license and buy an additional solution as before. Activities will thus be much more attractive to use. With “Boards”, which can be moved easily and allow intuitive, simple and effective task management. Kudos boards can also be used in Office 365 teams. It was impressively shown how an Activity Plus can be opened in Connections and is immediately available in O365 teams.</p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Connections 7</h4> <p>HCL is really breaking new ground in integrative ways. At the same time, HCL also states that the customer should and may decide where his data lies. In a cloud of an HCL partner, in a private cloud or traditionally on premises. And HCL also leaves no doubt about what the Cloud Act means for the customer when using a cloud solution from an American provider: Access by US authorities can take place without the owner of the data being informed.</p> <p>But back to integration. In the future it will be possible to integrate files and folder structures from Sharepoint into own communities. Also here not either-or but both-and. Salesforce or SAP should become just as well integrable as Office 365 and also a cooperation with Google is openly looked for. If with DOCS an improvement is thought of, it is not excluded at present that O365 could also be used as a viewer. Thank you! The world’s largest ICS conference attracted over 400 participants from all over the world. Every year Theo manages to organize extraordinary conference venues for the conference. While last year it was a cruise ship, this year Autoworld hosted the conference in Brussels and the more than 400 participants could also enjoy the exhibited vehicles during the breaks. In the future engage.ug will still deal with the same solutions (Domino/Notes, Sametime, Connections), but they will not be anymore IBM solutions by mid 2019. If the sale is actually completed at the beginning of June 2019, these will all be HCL solutions. A major rebranding of the products is imminent.</p> <p>At the HCL Factory Tour Episode 2 in Milan, HCL presented and explained the plans for the next development steps to a selected group of business partners, customers and IBM Champions. Already in Milan the enthusiasm, euphoria and conviction of HCL to hold a promising portfolio in their hands was noticeable. The same euphoria was shown and exemplified by HCL last week in Brussels during engage.ug and the innovations shown in the closed circle in Milan have now been publicly confirmed. Up to the top management level HCL was present for three days and valuable direct conversations could be held. What I had already noticed in Milan was that six years of missing innovation in IBM’s Collaboration division should not be so easy to catch up with. Too many issues need to be addressed. In Milan all possibilities were left open, now in Brussels the euphoria and belief in the future has remained, but at the same time the realization has matured that not everything can be tackled simultaneously and priorities must be set in order to meet the high expectations. So HCL Places, which to our great surprise was presented as an alternative Collaboration Client a year ago, was consequently dropped. </p> <p>With Domino 10, HCL already proved last autumn that promises are kept. It would have been more important for me to have innovations in the area of the Notes client. In the first renewal for which HCL was responsible, however, HCL decided for understandable reasons to renew the backend infrastructure, i.e. Domino. This has been successful and with Domino 10 we now have a very stable development platform that also allows extremely modern application development. The conference website can be used as a benchmark for an exclusively Domino-based web application with state-of-the-art design options. So what can we expect in detail?</p> <p>Connections is not yet officially part of the HCL portfolio. This will be transferred to HCL in June 2019 after the sale has been completed. The announcements were accordingly covered by IBM. While in Connectins 6.0 the integration and the quick access to the calendar and the email had disappeared, Danielle Baptiste has shown that in the latest version this will be available again. This was an obstacle for us to update to the latest version. This has now been removed. Thank you and your team, Danielle! Also further improvements have been shown, which are pleasing. The editor is updated for all areas, the adjustment of connections has been simplified, the notification emails are more appealing and also wikis can be edited by several people at the same time in the future.</p> <p>It is pleasing to see the great emphasis that HCL places on Sametime, and thus on internal, secure and fast communication. Persistent chats were previously not possible with Sametime. This is already possible with Sametime 10. Sametime 10 also makes it possible to receive chats on all possible devices. So I am no longer logged out on the iPhone when I open a Sametime session with the Notes client. The only suspicion here: in order to make this possible, MongoDB databases have to be pulled up for Sametime 10, with Sametime 11, which will be completely integrated into Notes, Domino databases will be used for this, which of course will be much more efficient and attractive.</p> <p>While the new Notes 11 client was first shown in Milan in mockups, it was demonstrated live in Brussels. Notes will remain Notes, the functionality is simply too big to revolutionize Notes. Nevertheless, it became clear that Notes will continue to evolve, become more intuitive to use and adapt to common models. As with other topics, Notes was also used for further development. The fact that Domino can be used very well for modern web applications was impressively shown in a demonstration. With the help of Alexa an order in a shop was searched, released and confirmed with voice commands. Or also with voice commands via a Domino App in Connections a private community was opened and the members immediately invited. The code is published on github. In Milan, it was also promised that the client for tablets, which has been available in the test flight for iPads for some time, would be available in the Apple Store. With IBM Mobile Apps, an application is now available for iPads that opens Notes applications on the iPad without having to be adapted. Android and iPhone will follow. The Notes Roundtable was another highlight and the concerns were taken up and heard.</p> <p>A new light client will also be available for applications. The replacement of IBM iNotes will be Verse on Premises and for which parity to iNotes in the scope of functions is promised and for a replacement of iNotes will also be indispensable. But the user experience and the integration in Connections will be completely new. The profile pictures of the most important contacts will be drawn directly from the Connections profile and the most important interactions with a correspondence partner, including direct access to chat, will be possible directly via the profile picture.</p> <p>And although it is an HTML5 browser app, it will allow you to work offline. Today we know verses as apps for iOS and Android devices. Verse Mobile will also be offered as a very fluid browser app for mobile devices in the future. Not a trace of the limitations that the mobile View for iNotes still brought with it.</p> <p>IBM had for years followed the strategy of leaving the choice of client to the users. With the integration of Outlook with the help of IMSO (IBM Mail Support for Microsoft Outlook) this is fullfilled for Windows. Also still no outlook was given for the integration of Apple Mail and Apple iCalendar. It has been confirmed that this is on the roadmap, but unfortunately nothing has been specified yet. </p> <p>Already at the opening Richard Jetfs showed the vision for the Domino/Notes, Sametime, Connections Ecosystem. We were very happy that IBM with HCL started the new Domino/Notes era in Switzerland with ICON Switzerland and supported us not only with excellent speakers.</p><p>Already the first ICON Switzerland event in the same lecture hall Lotus Notes, which was presented in an unforgettable user blast by Mat Newman, was the focus of attention. For Bob Schulz, IBM General Manager Watson Talent & Collaboration and Luis Guirigay, WW Executive IT Specialist, IBM, <a href="https://tube.switch.ch/videos/a87a5327">Mat Newmann</a> could not have raised higher the expectations. And those who took part were rewarded.
