No problem as I had meticulously documented all the changes put onto the 8.5.1 template and half of the customizations were included in the 8.5.3 template provided to me. Yeah!
2.
3. I had also stored a number of customized common elements for the mail file in a separate template.
4.
5. After getting all the changes into our 8.5.3 template I was ready to apply the template to my own mail file. I noticed a number of changes not being applied. Thanks to my handy dandy Ytria designPropEZ tool in addition to DDE I found my mail file still had the design inheritance from the 8.5.1 template's individual elements. What??
6.
7. After digging around I found this helpful documentation:
8.
9. Components that are not replaced when replacing application design:
10.

  11.
Individual elements whose template is inherited (that is, if Inherit from the design template is selected by the designer on the Design tab of the Design Properties box for the element)

  12.

  13. Caution An element with inheritance set is not replaced even if its design is not protected from updates (that is, if Prohibit design refresh or replace to modify is not selected by the designer).
14.
15. Puh, now what? I can clear the design easily with the Ytria tool, but what about all the other users? Time to write a script for the 8.5.1 template to clear the design inheritance not only on the template, but also for the mail files. So using a NotesNoteCollection I searched for all the design elements with $Class populated, removed the field, signed and saved the design element. (Of course, being careful to run the agent as the full rights administrator.)
16.
17. Then when the new 8.5.3 template is applied the design is clear and ready to accept all the new template features.
18.

Thanks!

CRM Solution/Salesforce automation feedback

I am looking for feedback from the Lotus/Domino community on their CRM solution for their salesforce. These are the points I am evaluating:
19.
20.

  21.
What product are you using?

  22.
Ease of use by the salesforce

  23.
Ease of customization for your specific business needs

  24.
Where is it hosted?

  25.
Is it Domino-based or other?

  26.
What is your experience with support from the vendor?

  27.
Is there a mobile solution? Is the mobile solution embracing the tablet market?

  28.
Any other feedback you can offer...

  29.

  30.
31. You can email me directly (ladysterling at gmail dot com) or post your comments here
32.
33. Many thanks in advance!
I kept getting a 500 exception screen in the browser. Why? I've done this before without issue. The server log was full of HTTP JVM errors. Hmmm....well the database I created today was with the 8.5.2 Discussion template but I found that the server I am working on is still at 8.5.1. So I replaced the design of my database with the 8.5.1 Discussion template and I am off and running.
36.
37. Now I can still crash around with an 8.5.2 Discussion database and its cool new features, but I will have to stay local to do so....for now.
38.
39. Cheers,
This is a beginner tip.
41.
42. I am wading through some free tutorials - while following a tutorial I kept getting a generic "Error 500" while testing - not very helpful. After hunting around I found this application property: "Display XPages runtime error page" on the XPages tab of the Application Properties.
43.
44. This (Blech!):
45.
I've been beating my head against the wall trying to do iNotes customizations and no matter the change they didn't work or show up. Since I was working in a sandbox environment where whatever I did wouldn't affect anyone, I brushed off the part where it says in the documentation to copy the file to a temp folder, make changes, then copy it back to the iNotes server. Then make sure to restart HTTP. Oh, and then you might flush your browser cache. I thought that whole copying business was like a backup. I was just uncommenting code examples in forms85_x.nsf to get a feel for the changes that could be made and how things worked.
48.
49. Alright, alright, so I went back and followed the directions to the letter but my changes still didn't cooperate. Hmmm, the restart HTTP command didn't do the trick. I also tried dbc f, flush forms commands, etc. Still nothing...So I bounced the server. Bingo! Now I am off and running and can't wait to tweak our webmail. Now, how do I call that retrieval agent from webmail?? Sigh...good thing I am in the sandbox.
Thanks!

RIM Sessions from Lotusphere

There were about 10 RIM sessions offered at Lotusphere, RIM101 - RIM110, that were held Tuesday and Wednesday in the Dolphin Europe 5 room. We are very fortunate to have a savvy, security-conscious Domino Admin at our organization who helped me with this tip.

We had a database that was using a purging agent to eliminate some unneeded history or cache documents. The database had 475,000+ documents at about a database size of 5GB. After the agent ran it only purged about 5,000 documents. By the design and settings of the agent, it should have purged another 460,000+ docs. In looking at the data, I found that there were reader fields on the documents and those fields only had the user's name in them. Therefore the server couldn't see them to delete them. So our savvy Admin set the agent to run with full admin rights. (See image below)Presto! When the agent ran next the right number of docs were purged and we were down to the desirable number of less than 5,000 documents.

A couple of things to note here - The first question from our admin - why not use this purge feature of Notes? Well, we couldn't purge all documents in the database X number of days old, just certain docs within a view.

Also, in our environment we have a "master" signer ID, not the developer, admin, or server. So since the signer of that agent is our "master" signer with full administrative rights, it is able to execute this agent successfully.

Thanks!

@Command([SwitchForm]) & Form Formulas

Here is a stumbling block I came upon a few weeks ago in doing some testing on an application. We had a number of views with Form Formulas. If you remember, form formulas are good to use if you need to display information from a certain form in a view but when you open the data document it will be displayed in the form specified in the form formula. At least that's the way it was functioning for us.

When we applied a new template to the database, the new template had a button in the main form with @Command([SwitchForm]; "EditForm") behind an Edit button. Once that button was clicked, the command should run to switch the form to EditForm and then a number of other subforms, scripts and so forth are run. There were no errors or messages in the status bar or other indications of a problem, except that the form never got to the EditForm.

The Designer Help doesn't give any caveats or gotchas that were relevant to SwitchForm. But after much scrutiny, combing code and scratching my head to find an answer, I went to the Notes forums and started searching from the beginning of my problem with SwitchForm.

Low and behold there was a post - SwitchForm will not work with Form Formulas! So I went to a view that didn't have a form formula to test. The document opened and when the Edit button was clicked the EditForm was invoked. Fortunately, the form formulas that were in place were not needed. So I cleared the form formulas and all is well.
Thanks!

Security for agents

I haven't really played around with security on agents in my years of development so this was cool for me, but probably elementary for you savvy developers out there. But I thought it was worth blogging for someone who didn't know.

You can set the security of who can view and run the agent.
1.) Open the agent properties dialogbox.
2.) Select the second tab of the properties box, the one that looks like a key
3.) The bottom third of the properties box, you will see 'Default access for viewing and running this agent'. By default the checkbox, 'All readers and above', is selected.
4.) De-select that checkbox and then select the groups or persons that should be able to view and run the agent. The list that populates this box comes from the ACL on the database. (You can also add other groups or persons from the NAB by clicking the Address Book or NAB icon to the right.) By default, I check LocalDomainAdmins and LocalDomainServers in addition to the other groups or people that should use the agent. That way my administrators and servers always have access should something go awry.
5.) A user that is not selected for this agent will not see the agent in their Actions menu.

This is very handy for us because there are agents that need to be used by a database manager that the average user does not need. This prevents savvy or exploratory users from causing damage while also providing a needed tool to the manager.
Thanks!

A Heightened Sense of Urgency

I have been catching up this evening reading blogs I subscribe to amongst the Lotus community, reading headlines here and there, and thinking upon my own career and general existence. While I have been watching the economy in the world out there and have seen it start to hit my own workplace, it hasn't been such a stark harsh reality until this week. I have been reading post after post of some of the community's big names announcing their employment availability.

For the last year I have been reading quite a number of blogs as well as following PlanetLotus.org, trying to navigate my own career path. I had left my Lotus career for 4 years to expand my family by three children. I totally missed R6 and came back into the game in R7.0.2. So the last year was relearning what I knew and picking up what I didn't. I am more up to speed and I want to charge forward in becoming a better developer and learn more new skills on top of what I already know. I went into Lotusphere with the still ever-present questions - beyond formula language and LotusScript, where do I go? I am probably approaching my pay ceiling and wouldn't have many options if I had to look for another job. After Lotusphere, I felt I had the answers I was looking for for now. I need to branch out into JavaScript (with some AJAX and JSON), CSS, HTML flavors, and learn more on the mobile devices which I have been dabbling in already. When I went to different sessions either directly or indirectly related to these - lightbulbs were lit. I can do these and pretty easily. I even have projects in mind. These tools will enhance my Lotus skills but will also be tools to help me if I get sucked out of my Lotus comfort zone.

So with these ideas in mind there has been a renewed excitement but also urgency from these hard times, to press forward and get more skills under my belt.

Tonight I don't know if my husband was making fun of me, chastising me or what for catching up on blogs, finishing gathering Lotusphere databases and slides, and making other notes sp when things settle down or I have some free time, I can be forging ahead. He tosses out a comment like "what's got you so career-minded?" and other remarks I don't really know how to take. These career thoughts and fumblings are things that have weighed on my mind for quite awhile, I just have the direction now I think I need to move on.

No one is immune from losing a job I have seen very recently, and I feel a heightened sense of urgency to do what I can to be more valuable either at my current workplace or elsewhere. It is just quite scary to me to see the very talented and/or more talented than myself looking for jobs. So I better step it up!
Thanks!

Nerd Girl: Making Geek Chic!

I had to blog on this totally separately because it was by far the session that hit me emotionally between the eyes. While this wasn't getting technical content, it was a huge therapeutic session for me. This session was a panel of professional women in the Lotus community who shared their experiences as women in the IT industry. They shared how they got started and how they evolved to where they are today. It was amazing to me to see how many of them had a story just like mine except I am still working to where they are, after a 4 year hiatus to have children. Their day to day experiences in working amongst the men, their own personal and emotional struggles in their jobs, and the other pros and cons of being a professional woman couldn't have been more perfectly scripted by my self. It was like their voices were coming from my head! I wanted to stand up and shout "Amen! I am totally with you!", "Oh my gosh, that is totally me!" I was shocked to hear these confident professional women telling stories I couldn't have scripted more perfectly. Gabriella Davis cracked me up when she said she is so surprised when she gets positive feedback from her sessions and how obsessive she is to be ultra-prepared and knowledgeable. I thought I was the only one like that!

I appreciated what Maureen Leland had to offer about how a woman's career will surge forward and then get put on the back burner, then surge again because of family life and motherhood. I always saw myself as a weak woman for bailing on my career to have 4 children, but that was important to me. Now I am surging forward on my career along with being Mom.

I never saw my struggles in the workplace as a struggle against men. I always thought it was a struggle to compensate for what I thought were my weaknesses, which still may be. But I do struggle against the basic personalities of many of the men I interact with. But like these ladies, there are a lot of advantages to our ways of thinking and our wiring that really benefit the community and workplace. Those are the things I try to concentrate on as I press forward. I have been fortunate to work with male managers who have seen my potential and helped me out a great deal.

Maureen Leland and Irene Greif suggested the book, "Unlocking the Clubhouse: Women in Computing" by Jane Margolis and Allan Fisher. I will have to check out this book. It sounds like a good read.

These were the ladies on the panel:
Gabriella Davis
Jessica "Jess" Stratton
Irene Greif
Maureen Leland
Mary Beth Raven
Kathleen McGivney
Libby Ingrassia

Thanks ladies! You rock!
Thanks!

Highlights for me from Lotusphere

First let me say that I wanted to blog several times throughout Lotusphere, but had a terrible time getting connected and staying connected long enough to blog. Plus there were so many things to say, where does one start?? :-)

So I thought I would go with the highlights for me:

Sunday - The jumpstarts were superior for me this year!

Scott Good's AJAX and JSON session

Henry Newberry's JavaScript session

The new IBM Lotus Domino Designer and XPage sessions that whet your appetite for more through the week.

Monday - Thursday
Opening General Session (OGS)

Loved Blue Man Group & Dan Aykroyd - good job IBM!

Exciting announcements with Sametime, RIM/Blackberry

      Breakout Sessions

The Eleven Commandments with Bill Buchan and Paul Mooney - this was an encouraging session for my admin and myself to see how we have progressed towards "better" practices and a reminder of much more we need to do.

In general, the XPages and Domino Designer sessions were great! As always, I enjoy Maureen Leland!

Great Code Giveaway with Rob Novak and Viktor Krantz - very hot stuff!

I feel armed and dangerous with Javascript Toolkit info from Julian Robichaux, Rob McDonagh, Jack Ratliff, and Lance Spellman

Developing Mobile Applications with Jason Hook and Tim Davis & Outwitting the Microbrowsers with Jason Hook and Rob Wunderlich (Jason, I hope the pictures came out good for you!)

Jess Stratton's Administration for the Developer - Build and Secure your own Domino Server Playground

There was lots more but these are the things that really stood out for me. I am sure as I unravel all of the information, I will think about more I enjoyed.

I am quite excited and ready to go now. I know this is all after the show but I hope those who attended had as great of an experience as I did. Those who didn't make it, I hope you got rich content from the blogs and fellow co-workers.
Thanks!

Duh to Aha moments...

Do you ever have those moments when you are working on code or something where you lose sight of the simplest things and can't see the forest for the trees?

Yesterday I was writing an agent that would go through documents in a view and place the create date into a field I had created on the existing documents. To make a long story short, I wrote a LotusScript agent that would place the create date into the field and save the document, since I couldn't just save the document and the field update itself.

Anyway, last night I am getting ready for bed, thinking about the script and have one of those moments where you slap yourself upside the head and say, "Duh, why did I write that in LotusScript?" It took 20 lines of code to write what a formula took 1 lines of code: FIELD CreateDate := @Date(@Created) - that was it!

I find myself frequently trying to take the most simple task and make it so difficult.

However, I did learn something in LotusScript, so it isn't all bad. Plus the LotusScript code would come in handy for scheduling the agent to run on the server, rather than the UI.
Thanks!

Going to The 'Sphere

I just heard that our Domino Admin and I will be going to Lotusphere. Woot Woot! We were really uncertain we would make it due to the economy and company cut-backs. There have already been some layoffs and 2009 might be a little bleak for us, but our IT Director felt it was important for us to be there. I appreciate an IT Director with that sort of attitude.

So I've downloaded the session database and will get the Admin to put the BB app on the BB. I am quite anxious to be going learning more about XPages, Java/JavaScript, the new designer and more! I also look forward to meeting up with our vendors.

See you all there!!
Thanks!

Almost into Quickr

Back in February I blogged about wanting to get into the Quickr project. Well, our Domino Admin almost has Quickr up and ready for us to start crashing around in. I am anxious to get our pilot place up for our Application Development team and start experimenting and playing the "can it do this, let's do that, how about this" growth. Then when I feel comfortable with it, I get to mentor or support the Marketing group how to get up and running and collaborating. It should be fun.

Does anyone have any good blogs or sites for me to find juicy tidbits of Quickr? I've been checking out SNAPPS and of course, IBM.
Thanks!

Lotus Symphony

I've just started using Lotus Symphony - yes, I am slow. But I decided to commit myself to using this office suite exclusively. Our IT manager would like to see more folks use it and wean ourselves off of MS Office.

I have to say right off the bat, kudos to the designers. I've barely started using Documents but things are overall a similar word processor layout. BUT...there are other things that are in much more logical places. I have to chuckle that as I am writing, I will start listing options or features I didn't think were there to go back and find them and delete my "feature request".

Headers and Footers on the Page Setup dialog box - a lot more logical than the View menu!

Sidebar with the easily accessible formatting options. I know this is available in Office 2007 but I am still stuck in Office 2000. *Sigh*

More robust context menus - nice

I like the ability to have the different Symphony applications "under one roof" on the tabs. It cleans up my task bar nicely.

Word Completion - Fuego! I had to look it up and see what it was doing while I was working because it kept nabbing words and spelling them out ahead for me. Fuego!

These are just a few things I have seen in first glimpses. I do look forward to finding out more and learning what new things are there that I am unfamiliar with - like Direct Cursor, Duplicate Formatting (hmmmm, sounds like Format Painter?), Points/Glue Points, and so much more.

I suppose what I like the best is the Notes and Microsoft feel and usability. The UI is appealing and will match up to Notes 8 nicely when our organization gets there.

What your favorite or new features in Lotus Symphony?
Thanks!

Best Practices - getting there...ideas?

Yesterday I was in a meeting where we were discussing the implementation of a better practice in our environment. Currently we have a development box, test box and production box for our Notes-based CRM application. Every night development refreshes test...every design element unless you have prohibited in test. Then upon good testing and satisfaction, test will be pushed into production. We have decided to make a master set of templates that is clean and pure without development "trash" like "Joes Form", "Susie view", "Bogus agent", etc. Then leave the development environment like a true sandbox. Only the elements that are ready to move on from development get put into the master template. There would be no prohibits in test and so forth.

Here's the question though - from what environment (development, test or production) do you create the initial master template?

I know what I think and a couple of my colleagues but I would like your feedback...
Thanks!

Lotus Quickr

I was in a meeting this last week and someone mentioned Lotus Quickr in passing. I guess the company I work at is considering this tool for the design group. "Me, me, pick me! I want in on that action from the IT department." I surprised one of my managers who had this questioning look on her face. She was surprised to find that I blogged and knew all about wikis and of course we use Sametime. Then my other manager said, "You haven't written anything bad about the company have you? You know that one guy..." Well, I am not that sort of person and I haven't even mentioned my workplace because it is an invasion of my privacy.

So if they move forward on this product, I hope they will think of me in the support and implementation. Then push it forward elsewhere in the company.
Thanks!

Rich-Text fields, email, images - oh my

I am not really familiar with how Notes handles rich-text fields going out in email. Here is my problem:

In Notes email I can do whatever in the Body field because it is rich-text - I can paste images, import, embed, whatever with images. When they get emailed out, they will appear correctly in an outside email account depending on security settings. Great!

Now, I have a marketing database used for creating mass emails. There is a form with a rich-text field on it for basically the same purpose as used in email. The marketing department will create an email campaign in the document, paste/embed their graphics, make their text changes, etc. This is then supposed to be emailed out upon selections of contacts in an organization database and an action trigger. However, when the email goes out, the embedded images are put into attachments. They never appear in the similar fashion that Notes email does.

Why is this? What am I doing wrong? Or what am I missing? By the way, email and the application are on the same server which handles email. So I don't think it is a server configuration issue if emails are fine going out.

Thanks for your insight!
Thanks!

Time to buckle down...

As I mentioned in my initial post I've been using, developing and administering Lotus Notes since V3. My experience has only encompassed formula language and LotusScript. I haven't even really gotten the opportunity to use Notes on the web level. But I am really anxious, excited and ready to go to the next level and then farther. I've started to map out a plan to begin extending myself by exploring Notes 8, start dabbling in XML, HTML, CSS, DXL, and so forth. Then I would like to get really crazy and push into Java. Woo-hoo!

I have my VMWare that will give me lots of options but keep me out of my real-time real-world development environment. I am setting up sandboxes and getting ready to get dirty.
Thanks!

Blogger Chuck Dean - LotusSMB

I read a great post by Chuck Dean today regarding SMB and Lotus professionals. I've always found myself in small businesses serving in the Lotus role as admin and developer. Although I have been working with Lotus since R3, my skills have always been pretty basic. I haven't been required to stretch past formula language and LotusScript with no web experience outside of personal web development with public web tools.

After returning from LotusSphere (my first year!) and breathing in Lotus and catching the Lotus Domino 8 bug, I've found I want to stretch. Although my present employer is satisfied with my skills, I want more for them and of course, me. OK, maybe more for me as I want to get dirty with other Lotus developers.

So the last couple of weeks I have been thinking how I could grow my knowledge and contribute. What in the world would I contribute? Then over the last couple of days I decided I would contribute to people like me...small-medium business developers out in the sticks. I would contribute to the basic Lotus "tree-hugger" as Rocky Oliver put it. I attended several sessions that gave tips to grow and stretch your basic Lotus skills and I am anxious to put those into action. I hope to post as I inch along...so I hope others will join me. I plan on getting onto Planet Lotus to more publicly stretch and have an element of accountability, helpful tips and cool tools.

So bear with me as I poke my toes out in the Lotus pond with those like Chuck Dean. Thanks again, Chuck! Great to have a like-minded professional to collaborate with! I hope there are lots more of us out there joining in!

¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°

Kendra - aka DomNotesGu

¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°
Thanks!

My Professional blog - Welcome

I created this blog to keep up more with my professional interests in IBM Lotus products, programming, developing and other professional musings. The purpose in my blog is to help others but also post my requests for help.

I am not a high-power, on the edge of Notes type of developer. Right now I am primarily a formula language, LotusScript, in the client type of user. My career has primarily been working for small-medium sized businesses. I haven't needed to stretch beyond basic Notes development since I started with Notes in V3. But I really want to ramp things up, stretch myself and embrace Notes 8 technology. I am really excited about what I see and am eager to get dirty!

So here we go...
Thanks!
