49.
What is a Progressive Web Application?

50.
51.
52.
53.
My thinking starts with Progressive Web Applications (or PWA for short) and we need to start to look at what these are before anything else.

54.
55.
56.
57.
Progressive Web Applications are built in common web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WebAssemble. With these technologies it means PWAs can run on Windows, Mac, tablet and mobile as all these operating systems support web technologies. It usually means that the creator of the PWA can update their code once and the new features are delivered to all users. If I was building an application myself today, I would be looking to develop them in these technologies.

58.
59.
60.
61.
Microsoft and Progressive Web Applications

62.
63.
64.
65.
As Microsoft have released more innovations in cloud applications, we have seen the advances of Microsoft Teams and Office running in the cloud allowing them to run on both Windows and Mac but also on mobile devices fairly seamlessly.

66.
67.
68.
69.
Microsoft have been providing us with Progressive Web Applications for several years with Microsoft Office Online. Now that Microsoft Teams has been rebuilt into new WebView2 standards, Microsoft have actively told us that this client version is available for Web, Mac and Windows.

70.
71.
72.
73.
The new Outlook for Windows is an example of a PWA too where you can install the application on your machine, and it run very similarly to the Outlook we all love. At this moment in time it does not support offline mode but that is coming soon (roadmap here) and this is the number of feature at this moment in time. The application runs almost equal to the cloud version of Outlook if you were to run this from a browser. It’s amazing that we can now even run websites and applications in an Offline view.

74.
75.
76.
77.
Microsoft Exemplar PWAs

78.
79.
80.
81.
Another example is around the recent announcements of OneDrive. Navigating OneDrive in the browser comes with many features and Microsoft even announced more of these at their event in October 2023. The website that is OneDrive where you can filter, search, see what is shared with you (rather than just a folder structure in File Explorer) is becoming a Progressive Web Application and will soon offer Offline mode, allowing you to view this in the same way as you would do online/in a browser.

82.
83.
84.
85.
As a final example, at the recent Microsoft Ignite Conference (November 2023), Microsoft announced the new updates to Microsoft Planner allowing you to have a single view of all your tasks in one location which are either set by yourself or within a team/loop workshop. You guessed it, Microsoft announced that Planner is also a Progressive Web Application that you can view within Microsoft Teams.

86.
87.
88.
89.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=OneDrive&searchterms=168618

90.
91.
92.
93.
Teams as a Platform

94.
95.
96.
97.
If you’ve spent some time with me recently, you would have heard me talking a lot about Teams as a Platform (and Copilot of course) and how bringing all your applications into a single place that is Microsoft Teams can enable better adoption of what you integrate. I don’t just mean Viva Connections but anything that your organisations uses such as a website including your intranet, HR solutions, learning and development and anything else that is just a website. There is more that you can integrate with Microsoft Teams but it shows how good the application integration now is within Teams. When thinking about integrating with Teams, first keep it simple like a website that just opens as a Teams application down the left hand side before then looking at how you could use bots or channel feeds (or even Microsoft Copilot Studio).

98.
99.
100.
101.
Thinking with Teams as a platform ensures that wherever you open Microsoft Teams on Windows, Mac, Tablet or mobile, you have the same applications and experience, and this can only be great for our end users.

102.
103.
104.
105.

106.
107.
108.
109.
Teams as an Operating System

110.
111.
112.
113.
Microsoft have been competing with Google Chromebooks for some time and have never been able to get to the pricing that Google have because of the system requirements around Windows 10, Windows 11 or even Windows 11 SE. The entry price of these devices is competitive, but Google and their partners are just so good at that price.

114.
115.
116.
117.
As you have read above, Microsoft Teams and Progressive Web Applications are key to Microsoft’s future, allowing people to have seamless experiences both when connected to the internet and offline. But now imagine Microsoft Teams being the operating system to your laptop. You turn your device one it opens into Microsoft Teams with your applications down the left hand side including Outlook, OneDrive, Teams and even telephony. The office applications are available to you as an offline feature and you’ve intregrated other applications you use across the organisation. There’s the whole app model for Microsoft Teams so you can integrate your own applications or purchase third party. And lets not forget Copilot for Microsoft 365 all runs as a web only set of feature too bringing AI to Office and Teams.

118.
119.
120.
121.
Microsoft bringing out a light weight operating system would also be better from a cyber point of view. As Windows has grown in features, it has more vulnerabilities and even though Microsoft are quick to resolving issues and preforming critical fixes, a Teams OS would need less features to run as an offline web solution. Could Teams OS even be a mobile phone?!

122.
123.
124.
125.
Conclusion

126.
127.
128.
129.
I would love Microsoft to release a Teams OS. Allowing organisations and education to take advantage of older spec machines to support call centres or child in the classroom.

130.
131.
132.
133.
To: Microsoft, If I am right and you are bringing us a Teams OS – it is very much welcomed.

This has started to cause confusion in the marketplace and people thinking that Microsoft 365 Copilot is being made free; Microsoft Copilot is part of Windows 11 so is kind of free so you can see where the confusion is.

223.
With the growth of AI increasing (as it will for many years to come) we are now starting to understand some of the challenges we have inside organisations and with that, we have seen organisations get it wrong with data leakage.

224.
225.
226.
227.
ChatGPT is a free tool that is released as a consumer tool and has massive capabilities with any user. But what does this mean for the enterprise, the public sector or even small businesses who want to use Large Language Models to support them with their work and goals.

228.
229.
230.
231.
What you have to remember with current Large Language Models is that it uses the data you feed it to learn and become smarter, to then give you a better output. If you gave ChatGPT, BingChat or Google Bard, the same question 3 months ago as you did today, you would get a far better answer today.

232.
233.
234.
235.
So does this mean that if I’m feeding these LLMs, that I’m letting it learn about my data, which can then be seen by other users? The simple answer is YES!!

236.
237.
238.
239.
Here is a real-life example of Samsung having a data breach through ChatGPT

240.
241.
242.
243.
Samsung:

244.
245.
246.
247.
“The company allowed engineers at its semiconductor arm to use the AI writer to help fix problems with their source code. But in doing so, the workers inputted confidential data, such as the source code itself for a new program, internal meeting notes data relating to their hardware.

248.
249.
250.
251.
The upshot is that in just under a month, there were three recorded incidences of employees leaking sensitive information via ChatGPT. Since ChatGPT retains user input data to further train itself, these trade secrets from Samsung are now effectively in the hands of OpenAI, the company behind the AI service.”

252.
253.
254.
255.
Source: https://www.techradar.com/news/samsung-workers-leaked-company-secrets-by-using-chatgpt

256.
257.
258.
259.
The Problem:

260.
261.
262.
263.
“We want to enable users to use LLMs to improve their productivity and work life, but we don’t want them to use consumer platforms that can store our data and make it available externally to users. Our data is our data and we do not want it stored outside of our network.”

264.
265.
266.
267.
The Answer:

268.
269.
270.
271.
BingChat Enterprise

272.
273.
274.
275.
We first need to understand what BingChat is to understand how the enterprise version works.

276.
277.
278.
279.
What is BingChat?

280.
281.
282.
283.
Microsoft have heavily invested in the Non-Profit that has created ChatGPT, OpenAI. Investing another $10b in 2023, Microsoft have been able to take the OpenAI technology and implement this into Azure for you to use in your own applications but at the same time, Microsoft have looked to implement this into their own products such as Microsoft 365 CoPilot and Windows 11 CoPilot.

284.
285.
286.
287.
Microsoft also wanted their own branded LLM which is called BingChat which uses their own architecture which is called Prometheus which looks at the Bing Search Index and the language/text responses that OpenAI can provide to give a different response to its competition such as ChatGPT and Google Bard. Some of the additional features that BingChat provides over its competition is the ability for it to reference its source data so you can see where it has used from the Bing index and provide results and links to you in its response.

288.
289.
290.
291.
To access BingChat, you would have to use your Microsoft account and log into bing.com. What is important here is that a Microsoft account is a personal account and not a Work/School account (as Microsoft call it). With a Work/School account your log in details are managed by your Microsoft 365 administrators where as your Microsoft account is completely owned by yourself. Another way I like to describe it is that you can use your Microsoft account to play Xbox but you can’t with a Work/School account consumer vs enterprise.

292.
293.
294.
295.
So looking back at what I’ve said above, if Samsung had used BingChat, it still would have been a data breach as it was using a personal account and would have been saved within the Bing logs to help its Prometheus architecture to grow.

296.
297.
298.
299.
Up step Microsoft with Bing Chat Enterprise

300.
301.
302.
303.
At the Microsoft Inspire conference (one of Microsoft 3 large conferences each year), they announced BingChat Enterprise adding to their further portfolio of features for AI for the enterprise.

304.
305.
306.
307.
With BingChat Enterprise we will be able to use BingChat with your School/Work account. We can log in to the service that is managed by our organisation and start using the LLM that is provided in a secure manner.

308.
309.
310.
311.
Microsoft have stated that BingChat Enterprise has “Commercial Data Protection” meaning that if you feed it business data, it will not go into any LLM to learn from that data nor be part of the Bing Index. This is massive for bringing LLMs like BingChat into the enterprise as we now have a secure and safe place where data can be inputted knowing that Microsoft is a trusted partner and we know the data will not be used.

312.
313.
314.
315.

316.
317.
318.
319.
What about Microsoft 365 CoPilot and how is this different?

320.
321.
322.
323.
BingChat Enterprise just uses the Bing Index and the LLM to give you an output based on the conversation you are having. It will give you a response based on what the Bing Index can see. The Bing Index cannot see your Microsoft 365 data meaning that if you ask a question to BingChat Enterprise it will not formulate a response based on you data. This is where Microsoft 365 CoPilot becomes the upgrade path from BingChat Enterprise to then ask the LLM to give you a response based on the data you see within your Microsoft 365 environment.

342.
The BETT Show has become my go-to exhibition. It’s a week I look forward to, as I get to catch up with collaborators, vendors, customers and friends. I truly enjoy this event, and to see so many thousands of people turn up to see the impact EdTech can have on their students still blows me away.

343.
344.
345.
346.
Since my first BETT Show back in 2006, I’ve seen it transition from being a show just for IT professionals to being a place of innovation and learning, from cybersecurity to engaging students through VR and robotics.

347.
348.
349.
350.
BETT 2023

351.
352.
353.
354.
On Wednesday afternoon, I took some time to walk around the show to take in new stands and growing areas.

355.
356.
357.
358.
Content-Based VLEs

359.
360.
361.
362.
As we look to help teachers with productivity, it’s important we look at tools that help teachers. One thing I noticed was Learning Platforms/VLEs that include content. The more pre-created content we can provide, the better, as it saves teachers time in creating it.

363.
364.
365.
366.
I recently visited an Academy Trust that creates all their resources for teachers across their 10 schools centrally. It is published, and then it can be used by any of the schools for delivery in the classroom. When asking more about this, they said that teachers did not have to create any of their resources, saving them so much time and allowing them to focus on other matters for the students.

367.
368.
369.
370.
Why can’t a VLE do this from a central bank of resources that are created by the supplier and then can just be assigned to the schools’ classes and students? I saw a lot more learning environments that included content as part of their platform to help with all these points.

371.
372.
373.
374.
Some called themselves Super Virtual Learning Environments, while others were just VLEs with Content.

375.
376.
377.
378.
I see MATs and individual schools taking up these new VLEs to help them with teacher workloads, and the content being very engaging for students.

379.
380.
381.
382.
Engaging Student Tech

383.
384.
385.
386.
With a 6-year-old little girl, I’m finding that she is becoming more fascinated in technology, with robotics being one of them. I noticed from BETT that we have moved away from the standard “here is our robot” to “here is our engaging content for STEM using robotics.” I know that if I brought my daughter to BETT, I wouldn’t have got her away from the robots area.

387.
388.
389.
390.
What I felt as I walked around these areas is that the content is so much more engaging from a student point of view. A lot more student-friendly and frankly, something I wanted to take home myself. We will see more robotics and tech like this for students.

391.
392.
393.
394.
E-Sports

395.
396.
397.
398.
On the rise for the second year running at BETT, the most student-engaging subject for both male and female students in secondary education is E-Sports!

399.
400.
401.
402.
When I’ve spoken at events about E-Sports and its benefits, I’ve included research around this area that includes the fact that 97% of male students play games and 83% of girls do. It can also increase communication skills, collaboration and group work, troubleshooting, and success and failure. We have to look at how E-Sports can increase attainment and student outcomes.

403.
404.
405.
406.
Whilst walking around the E-Sports areas, it was clear that these elements are starting to come true in the UK, and there are a lot more providers now in this space to support schools.

407.
408.
409.
410.
I very much welcome this addition to the education space, and I know that I would have been a lot more engaged at school if this teaching tool was available to me.

411.
412.
413.
414.
The Future

415.
416.
417.
418.
Conversations I had on the Microsoft stand with customers included AI, using Microsoft Teams as a Platform to deliver a better student experience, and how to implement student 1:1 device schemes better.

419.
420.
421.
422.
Tech is a great place to be at the moment with a change landscape of cyber, devices for students and AI

441.
The potential use of AI, such as OpenAI and ChatGPT, in the education sector has been a hot topic recently. In this article, we’ll explore how these technologies can be utilized within a learning environment like Microsoft Teams Education. Here are my top 5 feature requests/ideas for AI and Microsoft Teams Edu:

442.
443.
444.
445.

446.
447.
448.
449.
1. Breakout Rooms – Student Activity

450.
451.
452.
453.
To help students with group-based activities, Microsoft introduced the feature of breakout rooms where a class can be split into multiple groups to work separately but still within the same Microsoft Teams meeting. This feature has helped many students with remote learning to interact more than they would have done within a wider call. However, one of the downsides for a teacher with breakout rooms in Microsoft Teams is monitoring the activity of students in those groups. AI can be used to monitor text by each user and report this to a teacher on a dashboard. With more cognitive recognition and AI, it could also report on the type of interaction such as short words, quiet talking, and the type of language and behaviour they are using. Teachers can then see trends and could look to group more active students together but also students who are not participating as much to encourage them and grow their confidence in group settings.

454.
455.
456.
457.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could use this technology in the classroom too.

458.
459.
460.
461.
2. “This will be included in the Test”

462.
463.
464.
465.
When you were at school, how many times did you hear during your lesson that “This will be on the test” and you either ignored it or were frantically writing it down. Teams already has the ability to record and transcribe meetings, so why not train it to pick out key points that might be in an upcoming test? New features coming to Microsoft Teams include being able to capture Action points to help with meeting minutes. Why can’t a feature like this help a student with getting all their test information into a single place?

466.
467.
468.
469.
3. Search and Reporting

470.
471.
472.
473.
ChatGPT will give both teachers and students massive opportunities to learn and as mentioned earlier, many challenges but what are the benefits if we could use ChatGPT within a closed environment. Imagine a student being able to ask a question and it pull up all the information built by the school, resources that have been made by teachers and also content they have purchased from third parties. Having the whole curriculum and resources mapped by AI will empower the student to have the correct data and information about the subject they are learning. Reporting is also key, a teacher being able to see what a student is looking up, what resources did they get and being able to see that across a whole class.

474.
475.
476.
477.
4. Lesson Planning:

478.
479.
480.
481.
There is so much in the edtech industry where we look to help teachers improve their productivity and decrease their workload. If you ask ChatGPT to write you a lesson plan on a certain subject, it can do it. It won’t be a 100% accurate lesson plan but it will give a teacher a format which they can then copy into their schools lesson plan template. Why can’t Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft 365 environment do all this and get closer to an assurance lesson based on the language that teacher uses in current lesson plans, find resources across third-party applications and then submit it to a central bank of lesson plans to learn more from.

482.
483.
484.
485.
5. AI Assistance:

486.
487.
488.
489.
I’ve looked many times into how you could build an education assistant as a bot. Why couldn’t one now be in Microsoft Teams? With Microsoft School Data Sync, the open-source project Open Education Analytics and utilizing features within the collaboration suite, a student could ask the bot what their lessons are today, what homework is due next week but also how can I structure this project with example templates and recommended deadlines.

490.
491.
492.
493.
Conclusion

494.
495.
496.
497.
Microsoft have a great opportunity to integrate OpenAI with Teams. I hope to see some of these features to help both teachers and students.

591.
592.
593.
594.
Out to compete against Notion and Coda, Loop will enable better real time collaboration through flexible canvas’s that can be integrated across the Microsoft platform with them first appearing in Microsoft Teams.

595.
596.
597.
598.
Components on Pages that are in a structure within a Workspace are all similar to what we see today in OneNote with the Notebook, Sections/Pages and then frames on the page for tables, images and text.

599.
600.
601.
602.
However, Microsoft are being smart, how they have built out Components for Loop meaning they can be integrated to Microsoft Teams straight away and we see this as an example on the Microsoft Loop website.

603.
604.
605.
606.
This already tells me that Microsoft Loop will be used and integrated more into organisations world wide with the benefits of these components to have real time collaboration, sharing and in the future I would assume a development platform to build you own like adaptive cards.

607.
608.
609.
610.
Will Microsoft Loop work in Education?

611.
612.
613.
614.
Of course it will and why wouldn’t it. Microsoft Teams has been a massive help to the education industry during the pandemic offering a vast array of education tools such as Assignments, Reading Progress and Immersive Reader. The adoption taken by teachers and student now ensures that Teams is here to stay as a key element to an organisation communication and learning. Loop Components offers the ability to bring more real time collaboration for students inside of the Microsoft Team chat with voting tables, status trackers and task lists and I look forward to many others being added.

615.
616.
617.
618.
When talking to educators about Microsoft OneNote and its use as a digital notebook, I lead with asking with the kind of devices they have. The main focus being is if they have the ability to draw on the device with a pen. Depending on their answer I’ve been able to talk about OneNote and discussing its writing ability and how schools removing the need for paper when it can all be done by the student on their device and the teacher giving written, audio or video feedback.

619.
620.
621.
622.
Schools that don’t have OneNote integrated with their classes will love Loop and its ability to be already in the Teams platform, create great looking worksheets, share these with their classes and have them work together and collaborate. To then pull these into pages for topics for the lesson and then the Workspace allows a student to see all content for their class and look back at it at any time.

623.
624.
625.
626.
The collaboration features within Loop will only help the class, allowing groups of students to work collaboratively together on a single canvas/component/page which are only skills they will need for joining the workplace.

627.
628.
629.
630.
Will Loop be the OneNote Killer for Education?

631.
632.
633.
634.
Yes and No! It depends on the features you want. There are a lot of similarities between how OneNote and Microsoft Loop work and they both have great features which the other hasn’t. I don’t see there being competition in the future where OneNote tries to keep up with Loop and over a number of year Loop will become the default for digital notebooks but this is one feature it does not yet have.

635.
636.
637.
638.
Earlier I mentioned I talk to educators about their devices and how they use digital inking. Microsoft Loop doesn’t have anything yet with digital inking but I see this getting added by Microsoft in the future especially with their own Surface Laptop line up. Schools that don’t use the digital inking will excel with their usage of Loop while those will a high usage of OneNote will be confused about where data will be from component used in Teams chat and content in OneNote.

639.
640.
641.
642.
Once Loop has digital inking, this is when we will see a bigger shift and move away from Microsoft OneNote. Microsoft Loop will be king but its not ready to take the thones yet.

721.
722.
The second phase, which includes the educator facing experience, will be available starting in January 2020. The experience will be delivered within a tab that will be available in all Class teams. The Insights tab presents educators with insights about assignments and conversations that occur within Class teams.
