  82. really resonated with me since I have frequently seen first hand how a
  83. lack of conscientious programming can cost an organization in the long
  84. run.Call me crazy but I have always taken the long view when coding since
  85. much of my work in recent years has involved unravelling the &quot;shortcuts&quot;
  86. and &nbsp;sloppy work of previous programmer/developers. Why do so many
  87. programmers produce so much crappy code?</font>
  88. <br />
  89. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif"><blockquote>At big tech companies
  90. we frequently observed how programmers would do bad work in a short period
  91. of time and receive praise from their bosses. Over time, this leads to
  92. the standard: &#8220;let&#8217;s program with low quality but as fast as possible.&#8221;
  93. </blockquote></font>
  94. <br />
  95. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">So, blame it on the managers! Indeed
  96. after asserting that a developer needs at least a 4-hour stretch uninterrupted
  97. to be most effective, one of my favorite observations in the article neatly
  98. articulates the damage that even a &quot;short meeting&quot; can cause:<br />
  99. <br />
  100. <blockquote>If for example, our boss assigns a meeting at 11am,
  101. then the morning is lost since I have to get ready for the meeting, attend
  102. the meeting, greet everybody, discuss the topics, then I have to go back
  103. to my desk and pick up exactly from where I had left off, see what I was
  104. doing and keep on programming. With all these activities, the whole morning
  105. is practically lost. </blockquote></font>
  106. <br />
  107. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">As the article points out not all developer/programmers
  108. are suited for a self-guided style of work, but I recently marked 3 years
  109. working almost entirely from home and have to agree that if you can pull
  110. it off, the benefits are tremendous, both in terms of quality of work and
  111. lifestyle. I believe my choice of platform (Lotus Notes) is also particularly
  112. well-suited to this style of work.</font>

  266. a bit more than the usual amount of consternation over the future of, well,
  267. everything Yellow. Amidst all the hubbub I thought I'd break blog silence
  268. to address one specific issue that it seems has been at least a contributing
  269. factor in IT decisions to move away from Notes as an application platform.
  270. I also set up a <a href="http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/R5Q92GT"
  271. title="census/survey" target=_new>census/survey</a>
  272. related to this question, but more on that below...</font>
  273. <br />
  274. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">I was inspired to write this post after
  275. Lotus Developer and XPage Guru <a href="http://notesin9.com/"
  276. title="David Leedy" target=_new>David Leedy</a> last
  277. month sparked a vibrant conversation with his post <a href="http://notesin9.com/index.php/2011/05/03/company-might-leave-notes-app-dev-but-not-email-due-to-lack-of-developers/"
  278. title="Company might leave Notes App Dev (but not email) due to lack
  279. of developers" target=_new>Company might leave Notes App Dev (but
  280. not email) due to lack of developers</a> about his former employer
  281. in Lebanon, PA. The issue at hand is the apparent shortage of Lotus Notes/Domino
  282. development talent and how that has caused this company to consider a complete
  283. shift away from Domino apps. That Lebanon is a relatively small market
  284. probably makes finding any kind of IT talent a bit harder than many places,
  285. but I've heard similar complaints from IT managers in big cities as well.</font>
  286. <br />
  287. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">I don't know about you, but every time
  288. I hear someone cite a Lotus talent shortage for why it makes sense to move
  289. away from Domino (typically to Sharepoint /.NET), I struggle to reconcile
  290. that perception with the frequent complaints from fellow Lotus developers
  291. about the shortage of jobs. Clearly there is a disconnect somewhere, and
  292. I have an idea about its cause. &nbsp; What I see here is a &quot;vicious
  293. circle&quot; meets &quot;chicken and egg&quot; problem, with a sizable
  294. pool of &quot;hidden&quot; Lotus talent sitting on the job search sidelines,
  295. too afraid (if they have a job) or too discouraged (whether they have a
  296. job or not, whether doing Lotus development or not) to post their resume/CV
  297. for potential (or current) employers to see. Employers in turn conclude
  298. there is a talent shortage and give up looking to instead pursue a new
  299. platform strategy.</font>
  300. <br />
  301. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">It is worth noting that there is also
  302. a bit of a false equivalence when comparing the number of available Lotus
  303. Notes developers (and more so administrators) to the number focused on
  304. Sharepoint/.Net/ SQL/ IIS. Frankly, you need fewer bodies to maintain and
  305. develop for the Lotus platform (Feel free to offer specific examples or
  306. counter-examples in the comments). And considering how easy it can be to
  307. work remotely on Domino administrative and development tasks (even offline
  308. - thank you local replication!), Notes shops need not limit themselves
  309. to local talent.. Also, as was pointed out in the comments on David's post,
  310. you can grow your own developers by *training* them, and there is a ton
  311. of XPages training material out now. These points are. sadly, lost on many
  312. IT decision makers.</font>
  313. <br />
  314. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">It's hard to dispute that Lotus Notes/Domino
  315. is struggling in the market when even IBM are actively downplaying the
  316. Lotus brand. It's very easy to rationalize an application platform shift
  317. in the current climate, but on this one point about a &quot;talent shortage&quot;
  318. I am extremely skeptical. Is there a genuine Lotus talent shortage?</font>

  332. Your contact information will also allow me to contact you to follow up

  361. Professionals meetup</a>, I want to extend a few well deserved
  362. Thank Yous. The first goes out to our featured guest Eric Mack of GTD/eProductivity
  363. fame for imparting his invaluable insights and practical tips on increasing
  364. our personal productivity. The group was enjoying Eric's presentation and
  365. the accompanying conversation so much that we blew right through our 5PM
  366. end time because no one in the room felt like stopping. That should tell
  367. you something. I have to say that I have been inspired to take the next
  368. steps and start applying GTD principles to my daily routine using Eric's
  369. eProductivity Notes template. You'll probably see an up-tick in blogging
  370. here as that process unfolds. There are two other group members who already
  371. use the template and report great results, so I am especially looking forward
  372. to following their example.</font>
  373. <br />
  374. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">The second thank you goes out to IBM
  375. for arranging to host our meetup in their brand new Washington DC offices.
  376. Maurice Cogdell and Jeanette Coury really came through for us in the face
  377. of a challenging timetable, especially considering IBM has only been in
  378. their new office for a couple weeks.. The conference and training room
  379. they have there is state of the art and very well designed. It is large
  380. enough to accommodate the much larger groups we hope to see attend future
  381. meetups, but has a coziness that works well with smaller crowds too.</font>
  382. <br />
  383. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">I would also like to apologize to any
  384. folks out there who didn't see the meetup announcements in time to attend.
  385. As mentioned above it took some extra work to get our meeting location
  386. confirmed, so that meant a very short turnaround to promote the event.
  387. If you haven't already, please <a href="http://www.meetup.com/DC-Lotus-Professionals/"
  388. title="register on our Meetup site" target=_new>register on
  389. our Meetup site</a> so you are always informed about upcoming plans.</font>
  390. <br />
  391. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">And finally, Eric would like me to remind
  392. those who did attend last week that he is offering you a free eProductivity
  393. Reference Database with GTD Materials. If you haven't already made arrangements
  394. with Eric and want to avail of this offer feel free to <a href="http://www.ericmackonline.com"
  395. title="contact him directly" target=_new>contact him directly</a>.
  396. Two lucky attendees also received a full Pro &amp; Premier license of eProductivity
  397. in the drawing we held during the meetup.</font>
  398. <br />
  399. <br /><font size='2' face="sans-serif">We are now planning our next meetup
  400. for January and are looking for ideas on speakers and/or topics. I would
  401. encourage you to join our Meetup Group and use the site's idea features
  402. to make suggestions.</font>
