23.

Open a web site in a specific Profile in Microsoft Edge on MacOS from StreamDeck

I use MacOS as my daily driver and use Microsoft Edge as my browser of choice. I love that I can sign into each profile with my Microsoft Accounts and roam across devices with my settings (book marks, history etc.).

I am also a big Elgato StreamDeck user and have a whole board of buttons of web sites I use internally for my day to day job. Think my Intranet homepage, OneDrive for Business home, my OKR dashboard, Yammer communities and more.

I wanted to work out a way to click a button on the StreamDeck and have it launch a web site in the correct profile.

With the macOS Shortcuts app, you can create a Quick Action and put a Shell Script in there. Then StreamDeck has a neat way to execute the Quick Action.

Here is the shell script to copy and paste into your Quick Action:

“/Applications/Microsoft Edge.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Edge” — profile-directory=”Profile 1" — url “https://www.office.com"

The biggest trick here is what value to put in the profile-directory attribute. You can see all your internal profile names by running this command:

cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft\ Edge
find ./ -type f -name Preferences

My two profiles were “Default” and “Profile 1” which actually was the same on my Windows machine.

Once you have the Quick Action created, you can go into your Streamdeck app and install the Shortcuts plugin…

Create a new “Launch Shortcut” object on your StreamDeck profile and select the Quick Action from the drop down in the Shortcut drop down:

It does mean you have to do a bit of plumbing per button as you need to create a new Quick Action in Shortcuts app to then select as a button in StreamDeck. But the hours it saves at my desk its well worth it!

Hope this helps someone out!

Open a web site in a specific Profile Qin Microsoft Edge on MacOS from StreamDeck was originally published in Jeremy Thake’s musings on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

 32.

Since working from home full-time in March 2020, there have been various things I’ve changed about the way I work. I think the biggest thing was disconnecting after the work day. The most successful thing I did was remove all work apps from my iPhone.

This was triggered by my then 3 yr old telling me “dad get off your phone” and “no more meetings today daaaad”. She stayed at home with me throughout the pandemic which was both rewarding to be around her and also tough during meetings and presentations. She knew when I was in my office I was working, but outside of that I’m hers to play with. For the longest time, my office was our family room where she had over 10 different stations to keep her busy during the day.

Since I’ve done this, I’ve found I keep to my working hours and scheduled meetings. I find my work life balance much better. I’m fortunate that my role doesn’t require much out of hour escalations or on-call scenarios. It can all wait for the next working day. Folks can email/message me knowing I’ll get back to them the next working day.

The only two things that I noticed after disconnecting work apps were:

My work calendar — I have a Office 365 E1 plan for my personal email and one great feature is that I can share my work calendar with this account. It shows on my iPhone calendar just fine with the title and description. It does not show attendees etc. but its enough to find out when my first meeting is the next morning.

Joining calls — The only other inconvenience was when day care started up again and I needed to join a call on my commute to listen in mostly. Or if I was stuck in traffic to be able to notify the meeting I was running late.
I had an old phone that I set up through the Company Portal app and paired through the Hotspot feature of my iPhone. It feels great to physically keep these two worlds apart too. It stays on my office desk unless I know I’m going to use it during a commute.
Once the office opens back up, where it was common to jump on calls whilst driving to work, this will also be standard for me. T-Mobile also offers a great deal on a data only SIM for $10 more on top of my standard plan which guarantees instant on as often hotspot can be fiddly to get started.

Not everyone will need this of course. Android for instance, has profiles that can be turned on/off, but I really think the physical disconnect makes a big difference to me.

On another note, I’m finding more and more disconnecting in general from devices is amazing. My smart phone is not really that smart other than Messaging, FaceTime, Camera, Maps, Music and Podcasts.

I have not been on Facebook/Instagram now for over 3 years and do not miss it at all. I find the doom scrolling I witness with social apps story features an insane waste of time too.
I focus on communicating directly with my family & friends through calls and texts. I find the time much more valuable and focusing on the right people too.

I tend to use my iPad more for reading news, emails, shopping, journaling, and more.

I’d love to hear what you’ve learnt through the pandemic…

Physically separating work and life devices was originally published in Jeremy Thake’s musings on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

 51.

I’ve really enjoyed doing the podcast with my good mate Paul Schaeflein for the last year!

It’s been a fun thing to do alongside my program manager job owning the Developer Experience on Microsoft Graph. It’s a great way for me to network with other PMs across the company and speak to developers outside Microsoft walls.

Obviously the Microsoft Graph is a key part of Microsoft 365 developer platform, but there is so much more! So its a great way for me to stay on top of it all personally and to share it with our audience.

Anyways…thought it’d be useful to share the top 10 downloaded podcasts for last 12 months here with you.

As the show is just a year old on its reboot, we are seeing significantly more folks subscribed and therefore new episodes benefit from being auto downloaded in some clients. So newer shows actually have more downloads. The good news is the episodes early in the reboot also show up here too so content wins!

#1 The state of SPFx with Andrew Connell

Andrew Connell takes a break from his podcast and talks with Paul about SPFx and a history of developing for SharePoint.

#2 Microsoft Teams provisioning with Bob German

Paul sits down with Bob German to discuss his work with Microsoft Teams applications and a provisioning solution for Teams that Bob has built.

#3 PowerApps for fulltime devs & Microsoft Graph enabling them

In this episode recorded on June 29th 2018, Jeremy Thake talks to Casey Burke and Audrie Gordon from the Microsoft PowerApps engineering team on the new templates that are Microsoft Graph enabled. 61.

I have been using a Google Pixel 3 XL for two months. I purchased it to build Youstorian for Android. I decided to use it as a primary device to understand the UI interaction better.

After two months, I just couldn’t take the lags anymore. I purposely didn’t load it up with too many apps from the start.

The most noticeable lag was launching the camera, often taken a photo didn’t work or took 20 secs to take and with video often didn’t record and lagged and threw an error. With an 18 month old I’m trying to capture moments with, camera and other core apps are critical.

It appears the reason for this maybe because the OS is very new still and Google are still ironing out the bugs. I do enough dog fooding at work and can’t have this on my primary mobile device.
I had tried my luck with Android with Samsung years ago, switching off an iPhone, but only lasted a year for similar reasons. Which I put down to Samsung bloat ware.

After switching back to my iPhone X for a few minutes, its amazing how much better the experience feels to me personally. Whatever Apple did to brain wash me has worked for sure.

Things I liked about Android:

app timers — were a great way to control my app habits better. I set Twitter/Facebook/Instagram to 15 mins each a day. It really made me think what I did in those apps within that time.

Night mode — the camera on the Pixel 3 XL was pretty amazing, after getting over the lag. The night mode feature was very impressive. Although I really didn’t use it all that much.

OS UI integrations — Cortana integration as an overlay was nice, although I’ll admit Cortana has a long way to go as a voice assistant. It couldn’t control my Lutron lights without IFTTT! Android definitely have the upside on OS integrations for app developers. Microsoft Authenticator pop ups with finger print without launching the app is epic for instance.

lock screen — I liked the low power clock and notification icons always showing on lock screen.

widgets — I used the Outlook widget to have my calendar view on my home screen.

Things I missed:

we are a Sonos household and now that it supports Airplay, using Apple Music on my phone and pushing it to my home speakers was a big miss. Sometimes using Alexa to request music became frustrating if it didn’t understand my playlist titles or find the artist I wanted.

my family overseas are all iPhone users, apart from my youngest brother, we facetime and message a lot. Making people use something different is just too much hassle. Ecosystem is everything here!

app UI quality on iOS just seems to be more slick and consistent on iPhone. I noted this last time I was on a Samsung Note 5.

Although I’m tied to iOS with iMessage/Facetime. I have more platform dependent apps than OS dependent ones:

Outlook — the best email client out there!

OneDrive — my files follow me everywhere!

OneNote — a great way to take notes on my laptop, phone and iPad with Pencil.

Netflix — (plus airpods) in my daughters nursery when I’m too scared to get up and put her in the cot !

1Password — if you aren’t keeping separate secure passwords for everything you’re doing it wrong!

Microsoft Authenticator — the best way to do two factor auth that roams settings on devices.

PocketCasts — my favorite podcast client with Apple Car Play support (had Android Auto too)

Skype — I prefer this over Facetime as I can use it on my Windows 10 PC as well as phone and tablet.

Microsoft Todo — to share my shopping lists with wife and keep my bill reminders and stuff under control!

Google Photos — I have shared albums on here with family where they get notifications on their devices when I upload new photos. 81.

I am proud to have been part of Hyperfish team that has been acquired by LiveTiles, announced last week. The team has done an incredible job of taking Brian Cook and Chris Johnson’s innovative concept and bringing it to market.

Working at Hyperfish has been a great ride for me personally, because I was able to wear multiple hats on a daily basis. I enjoyed my role as evangelist, pre-sales, and product manager in helping drive Hyperfish’s business. With the acquisition, I took time to reflect on what has inspired me the most and what I have missed from other jobs I’ve had. After much thought, I have decided to take this opportunity to “boomerang” back to Microsoft.

I’m excited to let you know that I’ll be moving into a Senior Program Manager role in the Microsoft Graph engineering team. I can’t wait to work even closer with the developers that are building the product. I’m eager to work for Yina Arenas and the rest of her team on the future of the Microsoft Graph. I will be working on the partner ecosystem and developer experiences to get started.

As a 13-year-old boy, I set a goal to live in America and work for Microsoft, something that I was so proud to have achieved back in 2013. I have enjoyed working at a large SharePoint ISV Partner, a technology start-up, and being Microsoft MVP. I will admit there have been recent moments, primarily at events like Microsoft Build and Microsoft Ignite, where I have missed working with a bigger team and being in that large company atmosphere on a day to day basis. I can’t wait to get back on Microsoft campus and again be part of a product that is used globally by 120 million users monthly.

If you’ve been listening to the Office 365 developer podcast and the Hyperfish podcast, the hot off the presses content will continue. Paul Schaeflein and I have rebooted the developer show which you can check out at http://www.m365devpodcast.com/ .

So, I’m not going far…expect to see a lot more of me in the Microsoft 365 developer space moving forward!

Hyperfish acquisition and boomeranging back to Microsoft was originally published in Jeremy Thake’s musings on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

 101.

I’m a big fan of the Zoom hardware for recording podcasts both whilst on the road and at home. One thing that was driving me crazy was plugging in my Zoom H6 via the USB cable into my Mac and using Adobe Audition CC 2018 just worked! I could change it in the Audio Hardware and pick it as the input on a track.

Sadly in Windows 10, I for the life of me could not get this going with the drivers on the Zoom web site. AFter a lot of reading, I found the way to do this is as follows:

Navigate to the Adobe Audition CC 2018 executable file, typically located at

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Audition CC 2018\Adobe Audition CC.exe

2. Right click on the .exe file and select Properties.

3. Click on the Compatibility tab. Click on “Run this program in compatibility mode”. Select Windows 7 from drop down.

4. Install the “ H/F Series Multi-Track Driver” from the H6 download page.

5. Launch Adobe Audition CC 2018.

6. Start a new Multi-track project

7. Click on the “Default stereo input” in the first track drop down and select “Audio Hardware…”

8. Select “ASIO” in device class and “Zoom H and F Series Multi ASIO” in Device options. Then click OK.

9. In the track input again, select the track from the Zoom H6 you require.

11. Be sure to check the “R” icon , this’ll start show you your volume in your levels for the track you select.

12. Make sure that you have turned on the track on the Zoom H6 device itself and set the gain appropriately.

And then you’ll be good to go. It feeds the output of your PC through the Zoom H6. So you’ll need to put some headphones in the line out, or feed it back through your PC input. I couldn’t work out how to switch this to PC audio as the output settings aren’t there when you select “ASIO”.

Windows 10, Adobe Audition CC 2018 and Zoom H6 multi-track recording was originally published in Jeremy Thake’s musings on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

 112.

Paperless isn’t dead — bullet journaling saved me!

For those that know me, I’ve led a digital heavy life for a long time now. Going through every tablet you can imagine trying to find the ultimate digital assistant.

At Hyperfish, we had a new sales administrator start (who is a close friend of my wife) and at first I gave her some stick for using a binder and pads of paper, sticky notes and labels. Over the first two months, I saw how quick around that thing she became and how quick she could recall things.

I went out and searched for a bunch of notebooks. I really wanted one with dots on one side and lined rules on the other. I do a lot of sketching/mindmaps/UX on my iPad in OneNote with the Apple Pencil. I ended up getting the Code & Quill notebook.

“People have been doing this for centuries.

What is old is new I see!” Mrs. Thake

My wife laughed at me for getting so excited about a new notebook and how amazed I was with journaling this way.

Very quickly on Facebook, targeted ads started pushing me towards Bullet Journaling (http://bulletjournal.com/). I become hooked on this video:
https://medium.com/media/98540490d6edf652f524c1d465f8d525/href
I’ve been running this system now for the last two months. I dumped Microsoft Todo (formally using Wunderlist), Office 365 Planner and OneNote (on iPad).

Here’s what I found after 2 months:

Less distraction — Having a notepad, that is not bleeping at me and flashing notifications, really let me focus. It also never runs out of batteries, doesn’t require internet and can be used anywhere.

Meeting focus — at Hyperfish, we only allow meeting organizers to have laptops in meetings. This really prevents people not paying attention in meetings. Having a notebook sticks to that rule, but allows me to bring talking points to meetings and take notes during.

Memory recall — I’ve found writing things down, rather than typing them up in OneNote, means I can recall things a lot quicker and more reliably. Believe it or not, I didn’t miss the all notebook digital search! I found myself flipping to the page within seconds and finding the info.

Staying focused — I had a habit with task management to just keep adding and adding to the list and re-prioritizing too much. I felt I was spinning and not in control and no chance of completing everything. Having a single month view with my four main achievable goals and only allowing tasks to be added that map to that really focused me. It also allowed me to see my accomplishments in one place for the month.

No rework — Between the way the Bullet Journal system works and the fact that Pilot Frixion ink are erasable, I didn’t find myself ripping out pages and starting from scratch at all. The bullet journal system does have a key that allows me to push tasks to the next month or a future log.

I’ve been finding myself looking into how people have evolved the standard Bullet Journal process. There are some very creative people out there who make their process look pretty and add their own parameters. I’ve found Instagram a great source of inspiration and also some YouTube channels too.

How do you track your tasks, take notes and keep up with your work life?

5 things I learnt moving back to paper notebooks was originally published in Jeremy Thake’s musings on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
