39.
Hey all! In light of recent events, I wanted to highlight an article I wrote and published over on the AvePoint blog a few weeks ago. In it I touch on the societal unrest, racism, and systemic issues our nation has had to come to grips with.

 40.
 41.
 42.
 43.
More so, however, I go into the steps AvePoint is taking to stand up and provide an inclusive, diverse work environment. You can find the full post here or read on to see the first of five steps we’re taking.

 90.
Hey there everyone! Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with the PAIT Group president and fellow MVP Stephanie Donahue to chat about how different generations are viewing Office 365. We recorded our quick chat and posted it on the official AvePoint blog here. Read on for a little taste of what to expect!

They’re comfortable with knowing exactly where everything is in their current infrastructure, refuse to move away from email, and claim Microsoft Teams is for the younger generation. 136.
 137.
 138.
 139.
Microsoft Teams is a powerful tool that utilises and surfaces a lot of what Office 365 has to offer. However, while Microsoft Teams offers its own services, features, and functionality, a large portion of what you’re going to use it for is actually delivered by other services within the Office 365 platform. Examples of this are Planner for group task management, Forms for surveys and quizzes, SharePoint for file storage, Stream for team meeting recording, and so on.

 140.
 141.
 142.
 143.
Microsoft Teams relies on user mailboxes that’re hosted in Exchange Online and are powering the advanced features of Outlook. While Microsoft Teams can technically run without user mailboxes being hosted in Exchange Online, several Office 365 services rely on the mailbox to work fully, if at all. Some of these services use the Exchange mailbox as a store of messaging information, while others just leverage the ability to be able to contact you in the first place.

 144.
 145.
 146.
 147.
So far all I’ve addressed is the functionality of Office 365 apps. What’s potentially more important is…

 183.
 184.
The discussion of including private channels in Microsoft Teams has been a long one. The concept sounds straightforward enough; private channels would only be seen and accessible by the creator and whoever he/she invites. In practice, however, the feature has been a major development challenge. Here’s what you need to know.

 185.
 186.
 187.
 188.
Why People Want It

 189.
 190.
 191.
 192.
So, what’s so special about private channels, anyway? Why’s the demand so high?

 193.
 194.
 195.
 196.
Well, private channels would enable admins to have more granular control over who can and can’t access certain content. Sensitive material could be more easily gated. Having private channels would also make something like a manager/executive-only chat within a Team possible.

 226.

Happy Monday friends! I hope you’re off to a fabulous 2018! January has been a great month for me meeting with customers and partners in North America and UK. A key topic that keeps coming up in my conversations is how to effectively drive Office 365 adoption through storytelling.

 227.
If you’re not familiar with storytelling, according to Wikipedia, it describes the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, sometimes with improvisation, theatrics, or embellishment. Every culture has its own stories or narratives, which are shared as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation or instilling moral values.

 228.
Who can better answer this and provide insights than a rockstar storyteller herself? I am very excited to invite you to join Miri Rodriguez and myself this Thursday, Feb 1, 2018 at 11 am ET / 8 am PT for a 30 minute Periscope livestream where Miri will share proven tactics on how you can maximize storytelling to captivate and drive office 365 adoption.

 229.
If you haven’t met Miri, you’re in for a treat! Miri is a storyteller for Microsoft. She is a creative journalist developing content across key technology trends, designing activities and materials for Microsoft IT. Prior to this, Miri led three social care teams responding to thousands of customer inquiries via social channels in Global English, Spanish and Portuguese. Her work was recognized as a best practice at the annual Microsoft Think Tank Summit and won her a marketing award for effectively engaging partnerships with internal teams to drive a unified social voice and customer experience. She was selected twice to participate in Microsoft’s prestigious program #MySkills4Africa where she volunteered her social expertise to train and coach Social Enterprise leaders in Swaziland and Morocco to effectively launch their social programs. Her award-winning career includes 15+ years in Marketing, Operations and Customer Experience. She is the mother of 2 boys and an American Bulldog. Her philanthropic work includes volunteering as business consultant and student coach at Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, board of directors membership for Trade+Impact social enterprise organization and personal brand coaching for professionals of all ages and backgrounds.

 230.
Mark your calendars and make sure you join us on Thursday! All you have to do is tune in to my twitter feed and you will see the Periscope livestream broadcast at 11am ET. See you then!

 282.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone is off to an epic 2017! I just got back from Kampala, Uganda, where I was part of a phenomenal team that facilitated an intro to web development course to 50 underprivileged students over the New Year holiday. In my December 2016 blog post I shared details about this #TechForGood initiative.

 283.
In partnership with World Help and Mclean Bible Church, I was excited to contribute and help address the need to nurture young people in Uganda, where at least 60 percent of people under the age of 30 are jobless, with relevant skillsets. It is estimated that more than 40,000 students graduate every year from Uganda’s universities. With only about 8,000 jobs available, many graduates remain unemployed.

 284.

 285.
As I was preparing for the trip, I had a grand vision of the impact I would make and how much the students would learn from the class. Boy, was I wrong! I’m sure the students got a lot out of it – however, I am certain that I benefitted more from the 10-day trip.

 286.
Here are the top 5 inspiring lessons I learned about life (and business) from teaching in Uganda:

 287.
1. Make your own rules
288. It was very impressive to see how innovative and resourceful the Ugandans are as they thrive and survive in their developing economy. From the humble Boda-Boda public transportation to making what may be perceived as inedible bananas into a staple food known as matooke, necessity truly became the mother of invention. Too often, we fail to focus on the obvious and take a very academic, “best practice” approach to tackling challenges. While such tactic may be effective in familiar territory, it may not necessarily work in environments where the fundamental needs have not been met. Take Uganda’s tech and start-up scene – this vibrant industry has spawned some really exciting technologies to solve basic issues:

To make that happen, he had the foresight to assemble a team that could help this vision come to fruition. As the trainers in the team, I am grateful to be a part of the initiative.

 298.
Without the support and partnership of my family, friends, and colleagues in the industry, the trip and the training we facilitated wouldn’t have been possible. On site at Destiny School, we also had tremendous help from staff and administrators, who helped ensure we could deliver the best training experience possible to the 50 students who attended.

 299.
It made me think about the value of the age-old concept of teamwork. In our personal and professional lives, we are so often dependent on one another – we learn from each other, we’re more productive together, and we each bring unique skills and perspectives to the projects we work on. From start to finish, so many people stepped up to make this initiative a reality – not the least of which were the students themselves, who came ready to learn, work together, and open their minds to new concepts.

 300.
Lesson: No matter how large or small the initiative is, never underestimate the fact that it takes a village to ensure success.

 301.
3. Never be satisfied with mediocrity
302. Throughout our trip, Mutebi Hassan of Access Uganda Tours and his team took good care of us. Hassan, as we called him, is the kind of guy who knows everyone, and he handled everything we needed during our stay: from daily transportation, guidance on where to buy computer equipment to restaurant recommendations and tips on where to get the best deals on souvenirs. Despite personal and professional challenges throughout the last 20 years, Hassan was determined to grow his business and focused on one thing: Never be satisfied with mediocrity – demand excellence from yourself and others.

 303.
Once you take on a project, you should be all in. For example, Hassan and his team were always 30 minutes early to pick us up and take us wherever we needed to go – he never used the area’s bad traffic nor the local norm of being late as an acceptable excuse. Hassan and his staff were a vital part of our team, and they took their roles in this initiative to develop skillsets and equip the next generation of Ugandans seriously.

 304.
The same excellence you expect of yourself should be expected from others – and you should always make sure to communicate this expectation. Hassan strictly enforces this with his team and reminds them of regularly: There are no big or small tasks – put 110% into everything you do.

 305.
Lesson: Demand excellence in everything you do.

 306.
4. Ensure sustainable and scalable adoption
307.

 308.
Our goal for this initiative was to teach the kids “how to fish” – or how to be self-reliant as they finish school enter the vocational world. For example, one of the investments that World Help and Mclean Bible Church made in Destiny School was funding a chicken coop. This allowed the school to help generate income by selling eggs as well as provide food to the 1,600 children in attendance. It’s a concept that Bill Gates himself has endorsed.

 309.
We wanted to ensure that this visit was more than a one-time event. As soon as we left, it was important that the students continuously learn, be mentored, and begin to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. So what did we do? We had Edward Kakooza, a sophomore student in computer science, carry on the torch. Mike met Edward two years ago in Uganda and has been mentoring him in technology since then. Edward stepped up and committed to pay it forward and continue teaching the 50 children on a weekly basis. The good news is that Edward has a lot of support! Through the generosity of the following organizations, relevant resources are being provided to the students at Destiny School:

 315.
Lesson: Sustainability and scalability is essential to achieve lasting impact

 316.
5. Always celebrate with gratitude

 317.
In the 10 days I spent with the people of Uganda, one thing that struck me is how so many of them come off as content, happy, and always thankful. Given the circumstances that they often face as a part of a developing economy, this cannot always be easy.

 318.
I was also impressed by the way Ugandans celebrate. The students we worked with celebrated both small wins and momentous occasions alike – whether it be cheering on a key concept they learned in class or the huge party we joined to celebrate the New Year. It reminded me that, while it’s easy to focus on major milestones and objectives in the projects we pursue, we have to stop and celebrate the incremental steps we take to get there. The destination is important, but the journey is too, and we have to remember to celebrate along the way.

 320.
Most of all, I was impressed by the attitude of the students we worked with. They were truly grateful for our commitment to invest, support, and mentor them, which made the experience not feel like work at all – it was a pleasure through and through.

 341.

As the tech industry continued to grow in 2016, I – along with many others – have been privileged to play a role in and benefit from this thriving ecosystem. Apart from allowing me to help make a difference for customers that I serve by solving their organizational challenges, I am deeply grateful that this profession has secured a stable future for me and my family.

 342.
At the same time, I am deeply saddened knowing that many people aren’t in the same position. It’s unfortunate that in this age of rapid innovation and technological advancement, there’s still global strife, poverty, and constant human suffering in many parts of the world. Despite these challenges, it’s encouraging to see that organizations and people are stepping up and doing what they can to make a positive impact in the areas that need it most.

 343.
I believe that technology plays a critical role in uplifting the lives of many. As such, I want to contribute and step out of the status quo. I have always supported and helped out in various charitable causes personally and professionally. However, tech luminaries like Bill and Melinda Gates and Dona Sarkar as well as organizations like Microsoft Philanthropies and Humanitarian Toolbox have inspired me to take it to the next level and do more with my expertise beyond making a living with it.

 344.

 345.
Where it Begins in 2017: Destiny School in Kampala

 346.
That’s why I have committed to make 2017 the year of #TechForGood. I will personally and professionally advocate technology for good initiatives to educate, empower, and engage those who need it most.

 347.
I am excited to let you know that I am going to Kampala, Uganda from December 26 to January 6 alongside WorldHelp and Mclean Bible Church to begin a long-term partnership with local schools that will train teachers and students for careers in web technologies and cloud computing. Microsoft Partner Network kindly showcased the initiative in a recent blog post.

 348.
Why Uganda, you may ask? By 2020, there will be half a billion internet users in Africa – presenting an opportunity for African businesses and digital entrepreneurs. Youth unemployment across Africa is high (35 percent in South Africa, 17 percent in Kenya, and 13 percent in Nigeria) – developing digital entrepreneurship and creating new job opportunities for young people is critical to Africa’s transformative growth. But digital skills are still under developed, making it harder for African economies to get the most out of the web. A way to address this gap is by teaching coding which can help kickstart the tech industry in Africa.

 349.
As a first step, I will help and facilitate a cloud computing boot camp to 50 students at Destiny School in Kampala. The school provides education for over 1,600 students through sponsorships, and has graduated 200+ students with an excellent academic core, but no trade skills. These students often struggle to find jobs in the Ugandan and larger African economy. To kick off our partnership with the school, our aim is to train these students for digital careers.
