If you’ve noticed (or not), my last blog post was 11 months ago from when I am writing this in 2023. So many of you have been posting on previous posts for help. I’ve tried my best to continue giving patient-to-patient information to you.

The reason I’ve been gone so long? I was a caretaker all last year, especially as things got worse and were going downhill, then sadly experienced the grievous passing of someone deeply loved and highly significant to me. And loss and grief of that dimension is not for the faint of heart. It’s challenging. It can be a nightmare. And with deep grief can come the need to have an important break from what one was doing before, like writing blog posts and more.

All the latter even aged me terribly. But I call the aging and extra facial and neck wrinkles I now have my “battle scars out of love”. Luckily, I’ve been able to reverse part of it, which the photo doesn’t show.

I can’t say I’m totally ready to be back. Grief doesn’t end when you lose someone that significant to your life. You just learn to live “alongside it” to some degree. But I had such a memorable experience this morning that I decided to start again…to some degree.

***Please don’t reply to this by asking me “who passed away.” I don’t want to talk about this publicly. It’s too close to my heart. But you are welcome to offer condolences. They will mean a lot to me.

But I do want to tell you what happened this morning, as it will apply to any of you.

 41.
If you didn’t know, still being hypothyroid has many symptoms. The best list on the internet is this one.
I say the best not to criticize other lists. I say it because this list is not only based on 20 years of reported patient experiences and observations, it doesn’t include symptoms which are more related to adrenals in order to puff the list up.

And one symptom is the inability to conceive. l didn’t have this problem. But some women do when they are still hypothyroid, either from not being diagnosed, or being treated poorly on T4-only, or underdosed even with T3 in their treatment.

Here’s more specifically what I want to tell you…

I was at a restaurant eating my breakfast this morning, but it’s actually a brunch. I eat my “breakfast”

 48.
around 1pm. Why? Because I’m doing intermittent fasting from approximately 9pm the night before (occasionally I start at 10 pm, but mostly the 9pm) until about 1pm the next day. I do this to keep my insulin levels down (I have a touch of insulin resistance I want to fight against). It’s also anti-dementia, anti-Alzheimer’s to do it. Plus doing it keeps my weight down beautifully. It’s not hard for me to do, as I get my energy from fat when fasting. I don’t even notice it much.

The waitress walked up to me. She said “I remember you from a few years ago!” with a smile on her face.

I asked how?? She said that she had waited on me before, and that I was the reason she had been able to turn her inability around to have more children around! She now has three sons instead of the one when I met her.

I had apparently found out she was on Synthroid, told her about Stop the Thyroid Madness, about a better way to treat hypothyroidism and all related no matter the cause. She has now been on Armour instead of the Synthroid she used to be on—the latter which prevented her from getting pregnant again. She was now doing fabulously. She showed me a photo her now three darling sons, all thanks to throwing Synthroid to the wind and now having T3 in her treatment.

She also underscored that she has been using her new STTM knowledge to guide her doctor, who is willing to listen. That is the kind of doctor we all have to work to find. I’ve done it. I know that those of you in the UK, as one example, have it hard, though.

But it’s also important to know that anyone reading this can do fabulously with T4 and T3, or with T3-only if there is an RT3 problem to treat. You just need to READ this: https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/optimal. And I don’t mean skim the latter page. Read it all.

 81.
For anyone new to this topic and scratching your head about any part above:

1) Armour is a brand prescription of porcine desiccated thyroid that has been around for many, many decades. It was, in fact, the only most successful hypothyroid treatment.
2) Desiccated Thyroid has all five hormones (T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin) and has been changing lives all over again since the turn of this century, unlike T4-only which appeared to be a poor treatment for too many patients since 1960.
3) Over the past few years, Armour was the only desiccated thyroid that patients reported was still working, unlike what patients were reporting about Naturethroid, WP Thyroid, and NP Thyroid. And all three of the latter were recalled with most strengths after numerous patient complaints!

 89.
What has been brewing about Armour desiccated thyroid?

 90.
 91.
 92.
 93.
Turns out that some patients, in different locations, have been noticing and reporting a downhill slide with Armour, whereas before, they didn’t have those problems. For some on the same dose, their labs plummeted, and in this group, there were occasional posted labs to prove it. Other patients in this group simply noticed a strange return of symptoms after doing well for quite awhile.

 94.
 95.
 96.
 97.
The other problem

 98.
 99.
 100.
 101.
Unfortunately, a strong statement was also going around that Armour was working for “NO ONE”!! But that was unbalanced and false. For those who were paying attention, there have been another body of patients who are still reporting and experiencing Armour as working, and found the latter statement of “NO ONE” insulting to their own experience. And some of these patients have labs to prove it is still working, too.

 102.
 103.
 104.
 105.
Is there a possibility that a large body of us will find Armour not working like it used to? Yes. It happened before in 2009. Yet, even with the latter, and even though it appeared to be a huge percentage who had problems in 2009, there were STILL a minority who claimed they were still fine. Patient experiences DO HAVE gray areas.

 110.
 111.
 112.
 113.

Today, no one is a magical soothsayer. And with a variety of opposite patient experiences going on, we are nowhere near being able to claim that Armour is currently working for NO ONE. We need time and more experiences to truly figure out what is going on.

 117.
Four Armour Exploration posts were created on the Stop the Thyroid Madness (STTM) facebook page

 120.
 121.
Below are mention of the four graphic questions. Keep in mind that STTM is not, nor am I, a polling business. This is informal. But it doesn’t take away what we are getting from the comments to each question.

For each question below that was posted on the STTM Facebook page, I also refer here and there to the two camps: those who experienced clear changes vs those who experience still doing well. When you see reference to “optimal“, this refers to having a free T3 in the upper part of the range, and the free T4 around midrange–an important goal we learned about years ago. If we don’t get optimal, our good results eventually backfire. We wanted to differentiate backfiring from not being optimal, to backfiring due to Armour having changed for the negative.

 266.
 267.
 268.
 269.
The four Armour Exploratory graphic questions underscored the same situation going on for awhile: differences in experiences, meaning one camp experiencing Armour has changed for the negative, and another camp experiencing still doing quite fine on Armour. So looks like we need more time, more reports.

In the meantime, those who went downhill can definitely consider switching to using synthetic T4 with synthetic T3. And do know that people are using different brands of each successfully. And it continues to be important to learn this page: https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/optimal

 270.
 271.
 272.
 273.
Others may end up adding T3 to that Armour, but it will be important to have the right amount of cortisol, we as informed patients know first hand. Raising T3 in the presence of a cortisol problem all too frequently results in hyper-like symptoms as T3 climbs high in the blood without the right amount of cortisol. The right amount of cortisol helps that T3 attach to cell receptors. Here’s a saliva cortisol test you can order: https://saliva-cortisol.squarespace.com/

 316.
Let’s talk about the desiccated thyroid brand called Armour.

 317.
 318.
 319.
 320.
I caught wind awhile ago that there seem to be strong, black and white rumors going around in some patient groups that today, Armour is working “FOR NO ONE”\x9d. Insert loud obnoxious voice: “FOR NO ONE!!” Black and white. Attention-getting end of story.

 321.
 322.
 323.
 324.
But to the contrary, there are opposite reports, too—others whose symptoms or labs prove it’s working for THEM still, even after picking up new prescriptions, one after another, and redoing labs to figure things out. So it’s not yet accurate to say it’s working for no one.

 325.
 326.
 327.
 328.
Rumor, rumor

 329.
 330.
 331.
 332.

 333.
 334.
 335.
 336.
Or there’s the recent rumor mentioned to me that I am “not caught up with what is going on”\x9d. That made me laugh. I’m still doing the same thing I’ve been doing for near 20 years…listening, evaluating, and reporting on consistent patient reports. The exception is that I’ve been delayed in getting this up due to having a very sick husband due to Agent Orange.

In fact, when anyone states “Janie is not caught up with what is going on”\x9d, in tandem with “It’s working for no one”, it’s basically insulting (do they realize this?) the body of hypothyroid patients who report and show excellent lab results and feel goods on Armour even still today. Because what I report is not about “Janie”\x9d. It’s about the patients who are reporting what they report. And it is definitely not consistent among patients that “Armour isn’t working for anyone”\x9d.

 337.
 338.
 339.
 340.
What about those whose labs strongly imply it’s not working like it used to??

 341.
 342.
 343.
 344.
It is also a fact, and I’ve seen them, that some have labs that make us very, very suspicious as to what is going on. They now have off-looking labs after having had perfect-looking “optimal”\x9d labs. Both!! I caught wind of that many weeks ago but have still been evaluating what I’m seeing from those patients, too, plus delayed due to what’s going on in my private life.

 345.
 346.
 347.
 348.
So this all leads to questions about what is going on when another body of patients go downhill on the same amount….

 349.
 350.
 351.
 352.
Is it a bad batch or two? Have some patients gotten the bad batch or a changed Armour, while others haven’t yet?? (We saw that happen with previous bad NDTs). Have the makers of Armour fallen to using crap porcine powder not made in the US? Is it just a matter of time?

 353.
 354.
 355.
 356.
The bottom line is this…

 357.
 358.
 359.
 360.
We do not have all the answers. Why? Because for those who have experienced that something is wrong with Armour (having had optimal labs, then their labs went to pot), others are expressing doing just fine with optimal labs to prove it. This needs to unfold to see….

 361.
 362.
 363.
 364.

Why some find themselves with bad labs after having had optimal ones, yet…
2. Others still have labs which are optimal.

 365.
 366.
 367.
 368.
And with that unfolding, it is clearly a reach (watch certain people overreact to THAT! lol) to state that at the current time, it works for “no one”\x9d. In fact and as stated, there is also still a clear body of people who have an optimal free T4 and free T3 on Armour with labs to prove it. That’s also why Stop the Thyroid Madness has a page about the gray areas of our experiences and observations.

 376.
Want to open-mindedly investigate all this?

 377.
 378.
 379.
 380.
Here’s what you can do so we can have better answers:

1) Keep an eye on your labs while on Armour to see which camp you fall in. That’s the free T4 and free T3, and comparing a before optimal set of frees to an updated one. BUT, it won’t be a strong comparison if you weren’t optimal before. If you have a midrange free T3, or a free T3 just above midrange, it does eventually backfire with fallen frees. Years of experiences have shown that for the majority. The individuality is when it backfires. https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/optimal Instead, the strong proof that Armour may have changed is when someone used to be optimal, then new labs on the same amount aren’t showing it at all anymore. I wish I knew the name of the guy who first revealed this to me weeks ago to thank him.

 381.
 382.
 383.
 384.
2) Watch your Reverse T3. (RT3) If RT3 goes above the bottom area of any range, it will become impossible to become optimal with your free T3 and free T4 over time. Then a backfire somewhere down the line. Here’s info about the RT3: https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/reverse-t3

3) If you can, ask if there is a batch number you can be aware of for your latest prescription. Or another idea is that if you fall in the camp that once had truly optimal frees, but have them no more, let others know if you tried to raise Armour or not to get out of your current mess.

4) Report back to this post as to what you are seeing, discovering…without making black and white pronouncements that insult other’s experiences that are the opposite.

 385.

 389.
 390.
 391.
 392.
It’s also okay to use synthetic T4 with synthetic T3, or continue to use Armour if it’s working for YOU, or EVEN start it and watch those labs! You can still use this wise patient information in either use: https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/optimal

And NEITHER are we in a race. Is it possible that Armour will be better proven to have gone downhill? Of course. But let’s have more integrity in our approach about this, which I have always valued in my own approach as a Thyroid Patient Activist, because at the current day and time, it’s not yet as clear what is going on for “most” like it was with Naturethroid, WP, and NP. We are in a suspicious and exploration phase!

 440.
 441.
 442.
 443.
Recently, US Representative Katie Porter thoroughly and pointedly GRILLED Richard A. Gonzalez, the CEO of the pharmaceutical company, Abbvie (formerly Allergan). In fact, she figuratively pulled his pants down.

And if that company name sounds only vaguely familiar, Abbvie makes the life-changing Armour desiccated thyroid—a porcine-based hypothyroid medication which has clearly changed lives since the 1890s once a patient or their doctor clearly understands how to use it correctly. And years of patient reports show that it has done this far more aptly than T4-only like Synthroid or Levothyroxine for millions.

 444.
 445.
 446.
 447.
Additionally, Armour desiccated thyroid by AbbVie is the ONLY remaining desiccated thyroid product on the US market (more information about that below), yet it’s price has gone FAR too high for the financial comfort of many patients.

And why did Representative Porter successfully slaughter Mr. Gonzalez? It was about the ridiculous INFLATED PRICES, the hollow justification of the inflated prices, their enrichment of shareholders over the well-being of patients, and the lies from the company.

 448.
 449.
 450.
 451.
Humira and Imbruvica

 452.
 453.
 454.
 455.
Now granted, the medication focus of what she did was on the ridiculously HIGH prices for an anti-inflammatory medication called Humira, of which the price has been raised 27 times!!

 456.
 457.
 458.
 459.
It was also focused on the NINE times price increases of Imbruvica since 2013, a cancer medication made by AbbVie.

 460.

 462.

 468.
 469.
 470.
 471.
Whether you have autoimmune Hashimoto’s disease or any cause of hypothyroidism, we as thyroid patients are now the unfortunate and egregious target of a ridiculous price raise a few years ago for the LIFE-CHANGING Armour natural desiccated thyroid. This price gouging has not been easy for a large body of hypothyroid or Hashi’s patients whose well-being depends on a now much higher price for Armour desiccated thyroid with its T4, T3, T3, T1, and calcitonin.

 472.
 473.
 474.
 475.
Even worse for hypothyroid or Hashi’s patients…

 476.
 477.
 478.
 479.

There have been recalls of RLC’s Naturethroid and WP Thyroid, as well as twice of NP Thyroid by Acella. Something badly changed in all of them when the only US distributor of porcine powder ceased to make it.
So Armour is the ONLY US-made desiccated thyroid left, and which continues to work for the vast majority if they and their doctors understand how to use it correctly and how to spot and treat the cause of perceived problems!! It’s a medication which has completely changed lives since the 1890s. Also see Chapter 2 in the updated revision STTM book.

Even compounders are stating they are having a hard time finding a consistent and quality porcine powder anymore.

 480.
 481.
 482.
 483.
YET THERE ARE PATIENTS WHO SUFFER FINANCIALLY because of the ridiculous price increase of Armour desiccated thyroid a few years ago by AbbVie.

 484.
 485.
 486.
 487.
Another whammy: Insurance companies and Medicare

 488.
 489.
 490.
 491.
Not only do hypothyroid or Hashimoto’s patients have to deal with a now MUCH higher price for Armour (as compared to the previous affordable price that was there for years), we have many insurance companies as well as Medicare refusing to cover this life-saving and safe medication.

 492.
 493.
 494.
 495.
For Medicare, they wrongly believe it’s dangerous if you are over the age of 65. Yet, there are MANY, MANY hypothyroid patients over 65 who report changed lives on desiccated thyroid, especially once they and their doctors understand how to use it…and especially understand how important it is to have the right amount of cortisol and iron before raising natural desiccated thyroid.

Period. A few years ago, Armour just suddenly went FAR higher in price, even while other brands (which we can’t use anymore because of the recalls) stayed where they were back then. 566.

Yup. It’s happened again. The following lots of NP Thyroid by Acella Pharmaceuticals LLC have been recalled due to sub-potency! 15-mg, 30-mg, 60-mg, 90-mg and 120-mg NP Thyroid®

 567.
 568.
 569.
 570.
And as the creator of Stop the Thyroid Madness (STTM) patient-to-patient movement, I’m not surprised.

 571.
 572.
 573.
 574.
Since Acella brought NP Thyroid back after the recall(s) in 2019, there have STILL been complaints by some hypothyoid or Hashimoto’s patients!! No, not all. But enough to cause concern. The complaints have occurred in thyroid groups directly associated with STTM…and even in groups that are not directly associated with STTM. I was hearing those complaints in STTM coaching calls. I was hearing about them from many patient volunteers who contact me!

 575.
 576.
 577.
 578.
What were the continued complaints? They revolved around not being able to fully get out of one’s hypothyroid state.

 579.
 580.
 581.
 582.
And this is the second time for a recall of NP Thyroid

 583.
 584.
 585.
 586.
The first recall(s) happened in 2019. And you can read my blog post about it here. You will read that in some patients, their newly obtained NP Thyroid prescription was causing problems in the Summer of 2019. Then by Fall of 2019, there were obvious changes along with a return of hypothyroid symptoms, like a “cat piss” or “ammonia-type: smell. Patients reported back then:

 587.
 588.
 589.
 590.

It now smells and tastes horrible, worse than before.

The tablets look different from previous ones

I’m feeling much worse now on the same dose that made me feel great. Symptoms are back.

 591.
 592.
 593.
 594.
Then in the same blog post, you will read about the recall due to sub-potency, then later “super potency”. Either way, it was clear that too many patients were NOT feeling well on it anymore. Even those who said they still did feel well, didn’t have labs to prove it would last.

 595.
 596.
 597.
 598.
So what do you do now if you had returned to using NP Thyroid since it came back out again?

 599.
 600.
 601.
 602.
Still to this day for what appears to be the majority of hypothyroid patients, Armour desiccated thyroid is working (even though there have been periods in the past where it had problems, but they seem to have been corrected a few years ago). So is using synthetic T4 with synthetic T3. Examples of the two synthetics are Tirosint for T4, with Cytomel or Sigma Pharm for T3. Honestly, all the brands have worked.

 603.
 604.
 605.

 669.
 670.
 671.
 672.
And this statement in the graphic was made by someone on an important post. That post spoke about years of patient experiences on one particular subject which repeatedly counters what some doctors state.

And on one side, we agree about some social media posts!! There can be some pretty nutty information from some groups on Facebook or elsewhere. That poor information can come from members or the group’s owner or admins.

 673.
 674.
 675.
 676.
And as far as doctors, there can definitely be some who give brilliant information to us in their offices, or via a virtual appointment.

 677.
 678.
 679.
 680.
For example, my husband had to have his bladder removed last month. He was exposed to Agent Orange decades ago, and that toxin eventually wreaked havoc on him. That’s why I haven’t posted much here in months–it’s been hell for him with all his problems. And it’s been time-consuming for me as a caretaker, besides the grief from worrying I was going to lose him. And we have gotten good information from his surgeon as to how the surgery would be performed (before it was performed), and how long it would take him to recover.

 681.
 682.
 683.
 684.

But when it comes to thyroid disease and issues related, we as patients have sadly and repeatedly found too many doctors to be SORELY and BROADLY misinformed. It’s the very reason I created the patient-to-patient, Stop the Thyroid Madness movement nearly two decades ago.

 685.

 689.
 690.
 691.
 692.
And even to this day, too many doctors still keep us sick. They pointedly REFUSE to see, to learn from their patients.

 693.
 694.
 695.
 696.
So to those of you who might share the same sentiment as what was shown in the graphic, here’s information you badly need to be open about. Each point below starts with what doctors commonly believe or state, followed by what that statement or belief has done to millions of us as thyroid patients.

1) “The TSH lab test is the best way to monitor you.” To the contrary, doctors who go by the TSH and its erroneous “normal range” have been keeping us sick for decades, whether for diagnosis or treatment. Here’s solid information as to why.

 697.
 698.
 699.
 700.
2) “Synthroid or Levothyroxine, by themselves, are the gold standard of hypothyroid treatment, no matter the cause.” To the contrary, these are simply one of five thyroid hormones–T4. It’s a storage hormone meant to convert to T3, the life-changing hormone. But as we have experienced for decades, being on nothing but T4 has caused the vast majority of us problems. Here’s solid information on that.

 701.
 702.
 703.
 704.
3) “Let’s only do one of two thyroid antibodies to see if you have Hashimoto’s disease”. Guess what? One antibody they choose can be perfectly normal, and the other they don’t choose can be high. So you lose the important diagnosis. Here’s solid patient information.

 705.
 706.
 707.
 708.
4) When it comes to your Hashimoto’s disease, let’s just wait and do nothing to let it run its course. As stated similarly in the patient-to-patient book Hashimoto’s: Taming the Beast, that’s akin to letting a dog chew your leg off, but by bit.

 709.
 710.
 711.
 712.
5) “You should ONLY take thyroid meds on an empty stomach.” To the contrary, nearly two decades of reported experiences have shown that many thyroid patients still do well even with fruit, or veggies, or grains (if not gluten intolerant) in the stomach. Even taking meds with coffee and cream has seen patients report not being a problem if they are consistent, and watch their free T3 and free T4, and adjust as needed. The main things we avoid in the stomach at the same time are iron supplements, calcium, high fiber, etc, which can bind “some” of the thyroid hormones. Even soy mixed in with thyroid hormones at the same time can negatively affect absorption.

 713.
 714.
 715.
 716.
6) “T3 is dangerous as you get older.” We have definitely and repeatedly blasted that out of the water. There are groups for those who are older thyroid patients, and they report soaring on T3, just as younger people do. Sure, they may need to start low and raise low. But they do wonderfully. And guess what–heart and bones NEED T3. And T3 has repeatedly improved bone density, improved heart health, in patients!

 717.
 718.
 719.
 720.
7) “Your low TSH with T3 in your treatment will cause bone loss and heart disease. Thus we need to lower your meds.” That has been the most egregious and false belief by doctors ever, and has made us see a return of our hypothyroid symptoms. For one, it’s Grave’s disease and its resultant low TSH which causes bone loss and heart disease. Our low TSH is just a normal result of having T3 in our treatment and has NEVER caused bone loss or heart problems.

 721.
 722.
 723.
 724.

The Dark Ages of correct thyroid treatment

 725.
 726.
 727.
 728.

I could go on and on about how too many of our doctors can be in the dark ages about thyroid treatment and cause us immense problems. It’s worldwide.

 729.
 730.
 731.
 732.
So do know that in the area of thyroid disease, you can be making a huge mistake thinking you need to listen solely to a doctor without also listening to nearly 20 years of reported patient experiences, observations and wisdom in getting well. The latter is what this website and the books are about. And…it…has…changed…lives.

 848.
Hello everyone. I’ve been delayed in getting this important blog post done about recent recalls because my dear husband has had some serious health issues off and on for two months. And we are still dealing with them. But I had a recent chance to churn out this blog post. Read the information below, and then you will see questions that I hope some of you can research and post about. ~Janie, hypothyroid patient and site creator

 852.
Let’s start with the facts: 2020 has seen three (!!) American-made natural desiccated thyroid recalls. And this outcome fits what a certain body of patients have been reporting as far as new problems they encountered on these three products.

 868.
ABOUT ACELLA and NP THYROID: Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC is a specialty pharmaceutical company. Its desiccated thyroid called NP Thyroid came out around 2010. NP had always received good reviews via patient comments in various groups, including the Stop the Thyroid Madness Facebook page. Patients have often happily compared it to the older Armour, i.e. it had a sweet taste and could be placed under the tongue. Success with it seemed to be high as long as patients had good iron and cortisol, and got their frees optimal

 872.
PATIENT REPORTS BEFORE THE RECALL: A few concerning reports started coming in by a body of patients in the Summer of 2019. My own husband was one of several who saw symptoms come back. One big one was fatigue in the late afternoons, which is a common hypothyroid symptom. But more negative reports strongly picked up in the Fall of 2019 that NP had changed. Patients who had done quite well on it were now experiencing problems. Reported were that hypothyroid symptoms came back, and/or lab results had gone downhill. Patients also reported a “cat pee”\x9d or “kitty litter”\x9d smell (even after a 2020 coating). Some reported that NP burned their esophagus’ or stomachs. During this time, Acella stated to patients that they were getting their porcine powder from Europe (similar to what Erfa of Canada stated a few years previous).

THE RECALL: The first official FDA-announced recall was announced May, 2020. It referred to super potency for the 30mg, 60mg and 90mg tablets. I can’t find it at the moment, but the Acella website stated this recall was about NP made in late 2018. ***Another recall announcement in September 2020 refers to the 15mg and 120 mg tablets, AND THIS TIME, referring to sub-potency. Sub-potency seems to fit what patients have been reporting for a year now. as far as return of symptoms

MORE INFORMATION TO READ (also do a search for “NP Thyroid recall”\x9d):

 892.
ABOUT RLC LABS and ITS TWO DESICCATED THYROID PRODUCTS: RLC Labs cites an 80-year history, which is impressive, with a dedication in “improving the lives of others and will continue to be at the forefront in the field of hypothyroid treatment”. Their two main desiccated thyroid products are in the heading and had always been popular with, and appreciated by, patients.

PATIENT REPORTS BEFORE THE RECALLS: A body of patient reports of problems with Naturethroid first seemed to start in 2018 in various social media thyroid groups. This was after RLC’s two desiccated thyroid products had somewhat disappeared from pharmacies for awhile starting in 2017, then came back out. Example of reported problems once Naturethroid came back out ranged from a return of hypothyroid symptoms, and/or labs that went south or became odd, and/or the inability to raise it enough to remove returning symptoms. Negative patient reports about WP Thyroid came in more slowly and referred to similar problems.

 911.
 912.
From many patient reports, and in spite of changes in the past, Armour desiccated thyroid has still worked well, say patients in a variety of groups. This has been especially true, say patients, if they get their free T3 and free T4 optimal, and have the right amount of iron and cortisol to do so. Sadly, it’s not the soft, sweet NDT it used to be, which patients loved. But it is working, say many patients. Please share this with your doctor.

Patients are also reporting doing well on both synthetic T4 and synthetic T3, and getting optimal. The same holds true with T3 alone if one gets an optimal free T3. For those using both T4 and T3, we can compare to what is in one grain of many desiccated thyroid products: about 38 mcg T4 and 9 mcg T3. So for two grains, it would be 76 mcg T4 and 18 mcg T3. And etc.

There are over-the-counter bovine thyroid products to try after these recalls. Just pay attention to whether some are driving RT3 high (studies show that when cows are slaughtered during certain seasons, their RT3 amount can be higher) or watch out for bad batches as revealed by labs going south. This would be good info to share with your doctor. PLEASE NOTE: I have seen too many posts which are basically advertising for an OTC product. I won’t approve those comments.

So far, it appears Australians are lucky, as their prescription based, compounded NDT seems fine. The same may be true of some European-based brands. If there are others, please comment below.

2021 UPDATE ON ARMOUR: https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/2021/07/06/is-armour-working-or-not/

 975.
For anyone reading this who has no idea who I am or what I’m referring to…

 976.
 977.
 978.
 979.
My name is Janie A. Bowthorpe, M.Ed. I am a hypothyroid patient of many years. I also recently acquired Hashimoto’s as of this year, the autoimmune version of a thyroid problem. Long story about the latter.

 980.
 981.
 982.
 983.
And there was a past period of nearly 20 years in which I suffered. I suffered at the hands of numerous poorly trained, blind, and zombie-like medical professionals, no matter how “nice” they were as people. You can read my story at the end of this article.

 984.
 985.
 986.
 987.
And after those 20 years of misery, I had to get well by the seat of my own pants and my own direction. And it turns out that my experience was FAR from alone. It’s become obvious that easily millions worldwide over the past several decades, with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, have paid a price.

 988.
 989.
 990.
 991.
Ultimately, I was angry at the horror of what I went through for nearly two decades, all while being told I was normal. I was also horrified as I began to see that I was NOT alone.

 992.
 993.
 994.
 995.
So I started a patient-to-patient movement in 2002 which ended up being called, by me, Stop the Thyroid Madness (STTM). It has had key groups, the website, the facebook page, and the books.

 996.
 997.
 998.
 999.
And what constituted the movement that I started? It was and still is a complete patient-to-patient movement about getting well. It was about OUR experiences, OUR observations, OUR wisdom…NOT about what doctors were being taught, and clearly what they were NOT being taught, which has served to keep millions sick and tired for decades (including my own mother who suffered from a poor treatment).

 1004.
 1005.
 1006.
 1007.
And neither the Stop the Thyroid Madness LLC (STTM) books or the website are about “opinions” which exist like flies around a horse. Anything associated with STTM is about our solid and consistent experiences, observations, and wisdom …worldwide. I had no choice but to make the focus on all the latter. Why? Because too many medical professionals act like their (abysmal) thyroid training is from God Almighty, and have been harming us–the latter as experienced and expressed repeatedly by patients worldwide.

 1008.
 1009.
 1010.
 1011.
So why am I saying it is hell being me, the person who has been compiling all this patient-to-patient information, and whose head is full of the info?

 1012.
 1013.
 1014.
 1015.
REAL SITUATION ONE with my use of hydrocortisone: Once after moving to a new town, I began the hunt for a new doctor in my new location. And I thought I found a good one. At our first visit, I happened to be on a physiologic and safe dose of hydrocortisone (HC) due to high chronic stress which had tanked my cortisol levels. It had been prescribed by my previous very open-minded doctor. And based on nearly two decades of safe patient experience with HC that I had been collecting and compiling on STTM (see chapters 5 and 6 in the updated revision STTM book), I knew what I was doing in its use, as have a large body of patients over the years. Yet he proclaimed “You are simply going to permanently stress your adrenals.” All I could do is give a huge silent “sighhhh”. I tried to gingerly explain there’s a difference between my physiologic dose vs a pharmacologic dose, and that I would eventually be weaning off since the chronic high stress was abating. He stared at me like I was a lunatic (and I was able to wean off within the next month, by the way)

 1016.
 1017.
 1018.
 1019.
REAL SITUATION TWO with my labs being “normal”: I once went to urgent care. I was having very strange pins and needles situation in my feet, my left pinkie, to the left of my cheek. Thought I was having a stroke! Labs were done, and the physician proclaimed “All is fine and normal (meaning in range)” and sent me home with the diagnosis of neuropathy. But having observed lab results for nearly two decades and compiled what we were observing, I knew what the problem was when I got home and previewed my labs: my potassium was two points from the bottom of the range! We aren’t meant to be that LOW–healthy levels are usually a few points above midrange for nearly everyone we have observed. I proved it by immediately drinking coconut water several times a day for more than a week and onward (it’s high in potassium). And it all went away. When I got an email that asked me to evaluate my experience, I stated that a potassium result THAT low is NOT “normal” except with sick people who made up the “range”, and how patients with the right amount of potassium are usually a few points above mid-range! I got SILENCE from that survey instead of the typical reply these surveys get at the local urgent care. https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/lab-values.

 1020.
 1021.
 1022.
 1023.
REAL SITUATION THREE with my husband’s aldosterone, which JUST happened the other day as I’m writing this: I had been suspicious for months that my husband’s aldosterone was low. He pees a lot at night; his sodium is towards the bottom area of the range; he craves salt—-all symptoms of low aldosterone which I have written about as well. An aldosterone test was done: 3.28—the range is around 2-24 for that facility And what does the doctor say? “He’s normal.”. OMG. I tried to gingerly explain that years of observations show that when someone does NOT have an aldosterone problem, they are nearly all in the upper quadrant of the range, NOT towards the bottom. His low result CLEARLY shows low aldosterone. And of course, I am dismissed, the topic changed, and his low aldosterone is not being approached to find a safe treatment. https://stopthethyroidmadness.com/aldosterone and more in Chapter 6 in the updated revision STTM book.

 1031.
Today, there are a huge body of “STTM informed” thyroid patients who walk in their doctors offices and get the same or similar displays of condescending disdain or dismissal. Patients are treated by far too many medical professionals as if we couldn’t POSSIBLY know what is right and what is wrong.

 1126.
But is it possible that we as thyroid patients may need to take the coronavirus more seriously?

 1127.
 1128.
 1129.
 1130.
Whether with autoimmune Hashimoto’s or non-autoimmune causes of hypothyroidism, we might have reason to take this a bit more serious. Why? It appears having the coronavirus can be more severe if there are other preexisting illnesses. I see no proof of this yet, but what if thyroid patients are more susceptible to a more serious reaction to the coronavirus if one is underdosed on thyroid meds, on a poor treatment with T4-only, have an adrenal issue, have a stressed liver, are gaining in older age, or have any other issues related to your thyroid problem? Then comes those with Lyme, mold exposure, or any other diseases and conditions which are a stress.

 1138.
There seem to be some key symptoms (after an incubation period up 1 to 14 days) in the early stages:

 1139.
 1140.
 1141.
 1142.

Fever

Dry Cough

Loss of taste or smell

Fatigue, then as it progresses….shortness of breath

 1143.
 1144.
 1145.
 1146.
You might get a runny nose, sore throat, aches and pains. More mild cases are like having a cold.

 1147.
 1148.
 1149.
 1150.
If it progresses and on the mores serious side, one might see liver stress, kidney stress, and for a few, this can lead to pneumonia and damage to organs from an overreactive immune system. For those with autoimmune diseases, using LDN might be key.

 1158.
First and foremost, this is NOT the time to overreact or panic, even with the presentation of facts above or on the internet or social media. Instead, this is the time to implement all sorts of great strategies to give you a sense of power!

 1163.
 1164.
 1165.
 1166.

Wash your hands thoroughly after touching anything in a public place. Wash your hands again and again all day.

Don’t eagerly reach out to shake someone’s hand right now. Fist bumps rock right now.

Get rest now. Support your sleep. Take naps. De-stress. Find times to laugh. Gentle yoga. Etc.

Stock up now with healthy foods for your home.

Buy some 60-80% alcohol based wipes and keep them in your purse, pocket, vehicle. Use them liberally on door handles, public tables, anywhere you go.

See if you can get a THREE MONTH SUPPLY of thyroid hormones and/or any other prescription meds. If you can get it, might be wise to have T3 on hand to counter the fact that this could cause RT3 to go up. If you canNOT get it, taking good liver support like Milk Thistle can help lower RT3. We add some iron to the Milk Thistle.

Work on supporting your adrenals now to counter stress. There are good adaptogens out there. If saliva revealed a need for cortisol, get optimal on them. Chapters 5 and 6 in the updated revision STTM book explains it all.

Having optimal Vitamin D is stated to be important for a good immune function. Many of us have to take 10,000 IUs to get ours up. Most of us are shooting for 60-80 in certain ranges. Many add K2 to it.

Dr. Brownstein mentions vitamins A, C and D, plus iodine, as supportive of immune function.

Consider all sorts of good supplements! Elderberry (gummies, capsules, liquid) is known to have a strong anti-viral component! Most recommendations are taking the recommended amount on the bottle or box and taking 4 times a day. Watch antibodies, just in case, if you have Hashi’s. Vitamin C is stated to be highly antiviral. Zinc is stated to be highly antiviral. Astragalus is stated to be immune supportive, but do your research if you have Hashi’s. .

There are also interesting immune function supplements out there to consider. Beta Glucan 1,3D is one–it’s expensive. Look up cheaper sources, if need. Do your research on it. But if you have Hashi’s or autoimmune diseases, might want to check your antibodies to make sure it’s not causing a rise. It doesn’t in everyone, like the gal with Hashi’s who has been on it a year with no rise in antibodies. So just keep an eye on your own.

Check out this article about using Quercitin.

Check out this article about using Melatonin to counter the inflammation.
