43.
Professional athletes continue to get into trouble with sports betting, so is it time for one league to step up and change the rules?

 44.

 45.

 46.

 47.
Is betting by pro athletes in the future?

 48.
Every league has a different rule related to betting on sports. Prior to the overturning of the UIGEA the rule was basically that betting on your own sport could lead to a fine or suspension and in some leagues betting on any sport could lead to suspension. But it seems that with sports leagues now benefitting from betting, some may have changed their tune.

 49.
As of today, here are the “rules” for each league:

 50.
NFL – Bets on NFL games by any member of the league will result in a minimum one-year suspension if it involves other teams and a minimum two years if it involves their own team. It is understood that the latter would likely lead to a permanent suspension, but two years is the minimum suspension. Moreover, actual or attempted game fixing will result in a permanent ban and providing inside information for the purposes of betting results in a minimum one-year suspension. Using a proxy to bet on NFL games is a one-year suspension and betting on any sport other than NFL while at the workplace (i.e. during a game or in practice), will result in a minimum two game suspension without pay. Numerous players have been suspended over the last two years by the NFL for violating the rules with the most notable being C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions and Calvin Ridley of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The rules against wagering on NFL games is written into the league’s constitution.

 51.
NBA – Wagering on any NBA related league is prohibited, including the NBA summer league and the WNBA. Betting on other sports is permitted provided the bet is not placed at an NBA facility and betting is legal where the bet is placed. The penalties for violating the rules can be anything from fines to suspensions, although unlike the NFL, the penalties are not set in stone. To date there have been no fines or suspensions in the NBA for violating the rule, although the NBA is looking into Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter for possible game fixing.

 52.
According to reports, in some games between January and March 2024, there was suspicious betting on props involving Porter, with all bets being on the under for prop bets involving the Raptor. In the January 26th game against the L.A. Clippers, there was a ton of suspicious betting on under props involving Porter who pulled himself from the game after four minutes citing injury. One prop included an over/under for 3 pointers at 0.5 and Porter didn’t attempt one 3 point shot. DraftKings said he was by far and away their biggest loser on the night. And on March 20th, against the Sacremento Kings, the NBA said there was a lot of betting against Porter on several props at various sportsbooks and Porter only played three minutes in this game before leaving for an unspecified illness. If Porter is found guilty, he could face termination. All suspensions since 2017 have been related to drugs, weapons, physical abuse and in one case, Kyrie Irving was suspended for posting antisemitic social media posts.

 53.
NHL – It is illegal for NHL players, coaches, referees etc. to wager on any NHL game. There is no rule related to betting on other leagues and like the NBA, the penalties for violating the rules are an indetermined suspension to be decided by the league. To date, only one player has been investigated for betting, Evander Kane. Kane was accused by his ex-wife of betting on San Jose Sharks games while playing for the team in 2021, although Kane has vehemently denied it. Kane was exonerated by the league, but they immediately set up a partnership with SportRadar to help identify suspicious betting by players. Kane is an admitted compulsive gambler and did lose a lot of money at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, which led to him declaring bankruptcy, but there was no proof he bet on NHL games, hence the NHL dropped the investigation. Like the NFL, the rule against betting on NHL games is written into the league’s constitution.

 54.
MLB – Per rules of Major League Baseball, any uniformed player or league official can bet on any sport, except baseball. But betting on any games that involves a baseball diamond is strictly prohibited. That includes NCAA baseball, Olympics, The World Classic, etc. This technically even applies to grounds crew and seasonal employees. The penalties for betting on baseball depend on where a bet is placed and by who. Any player found guilty of illegal gambling, fixing a game or offering gifts to an umpire to help fix a game will result in a lifetime ban. Pete Rose is the most well-known example where betting on games led to a lifetime ban, although that occurred before Major League Baseball got in bed with sports betting companies. In fact, Rose is ineligible to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for that reason. Non-players found betting on baseball are subject to discretion of the Commissioner, although most penalties involve a three-year suspension. The penalties are mostly left to the Commissioner, so there is no rule in the constitution, like in hockey and the NFL. No MLB players have been fined or suspended since 2017, although there have been some suspensions in the minor leagues. That said, Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter was fired by the star just the other day for betting on sports and it appears a lot of insiders are nervous given some suggestions Ohtani himself could have been involved. There is no indication if the bets by the interpreter involved baseball, although the hush-hush surrounding the matter leads one to suspect it did. Ohtani has vehemently denied involvement, but the next few days will be interesting indeed.

 55.
NCAA – Student athletes, coaches, administrators and officials are barred from betting on any league sport, including the ones mentioned earlier. Even betting on MLS is illegal. Betting on golf is also not allowed because the NCAA schools have golf teams and scholarships. Anyone caught violating the rule can be fined, suspended and players can lose any scholarships they receive. There have been numerous examples of players that were suspended by the NCAA for gambling including Alan Tisdale, a linebacker for Virginia Tech, who received a 6-game suspension for admitting to betting on the NBA finals. The NCAA was the last league to agree to partnerships with sports betting companies and have always been mindful of any possibility of game fixing given numerous cheating scandals involving the mob in decades past. Because most NCAA players will never make it to the pros it is understood that they really have nothing to lose if they break the rules, unlike professionals. So, the league does whatever it can to ensure that player’s lives will be ruined otherwise if they are found to have cheated in games or worked with others to fix games.

 56.
MLS – There is no set rule related to betting by soccer players, but the league seems to follow other soccer leagues and disallows betting on soccer games. In 2021 MLS player Felipe Hernandez was suspended for several games for betting on MLS games he was not involved in. It was also deemed he made the bets in Missouri before the state launched legal sports betting, which was a concern. And just last year, Max Alves of the Colorado Rapids was suspended for suspected match fixing and while he was never officially found guilty or charged, he decided to return to his former team in Brazil.

 57.
So, where is the rumor that the NBA may be willing to change its stance on betting on NBA related games coming from?

 58.
The answer is that it was related to comments by many players following the NBA fining Rudy Gobert $100,000 last week for insinuating a referee may have made money gambling on the game. Trying to get feedback on the fine levied, a few news sites posted stories of players in various leagues who believe they should be able to place bets. Some of the quoted players say that if the teams can make money partnering with sportsbooks, then they should be able to wager on games they aren’t involved in or possibly betting on the over for their own prop bets for games they are involved. One suggestion by a player was for sportsbooks to set up separate player accounts and monitor betting to ensure they are only betting on themselves, the same way owners and trainers can only bet on their own horses. One would have suspected league officials to be screaming to the top of their lungs that this would never happen, but so far it has been silence.

 59.
One analyst I spoke to, who was one of the first to indicate Silver’s acceptance of betting on the NBA, said he is pretty confident that Adam Silver may be open to the idea . . . with provisions. Silver was the first commissioner to break with other league commissioners and promote betting on their sport and he was the first to allow teams to set up partnerships with sportsbooks and fantasy sports sites. The analyst said that Silver realizes that human nature will compel players to bet on their own sports as sports betting becomes more mainstream and to him the most important thing is transparency. So, removing the rule prohibiting betting on NBA games will allow everything to be in the open and it will be far easier to spot game fixing or suspicious play and take action accordingly. “Think of it as a type of blockchain situation where everyone on the chain can see every single transaction. It would be far more difficult to cheat.” It is also notable that the NBA just announced plans to incorporate in-play betting into the NBA League Pass app in hopes of netting more money for the league.

 60.
I spoke with another journalist who writes about baseball and he said while a change allowing players to bet on other leagues is possible, betting on MLB by team members will never happen, particularly if it is their own games.

 61.
“After MLB did everything in their power to vilify Pete Rose and claim that his actions, which involved betting on The Reds as manager, severely compromised the integrity of baseball, it would be seen as the heights of hypocrisy to do a 180 and allow people on a team to bet on their own games. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but if it does it will be long after other leagues like the NBA do it and baseball can then say they are just following suit.”

 62.
Does that mean that NBA players will be able to bet on basketball games by next season? Of course not. It took Silver about three years to finally get up the nerve to make a statement indicating support for legal NBA betting so any change of this significance to its rules will have to involve input by lawyers, the unions and the team owners. But there is little doubt that if any league is going to allow a change in betting rules for team members, it will be the NBA. And, Adam Silver has not come out and categorically denied any rumors that the league is looking at amending its betting rules. So, OSGA will be keeping a close eye to see if this becomes a “you read it here first” opportunity should the NBA announce players are no longer banned from betting on other games or possibly even on their own games provided it is only an over bet on their own prop. After all transparency is often the best solution to any issue.

 86.
The 10th annual OSGA Super Easy, Super Bowl contest proved not-so-easy for most players.

 87.

Super Bowl LVIII is in the books and so is the 10th year for the OSGA Super Easy, Super Bowl contest. The Chiefs come-from-behind, overtime victory sealed the deal for one OSGA member, as ‘djobie‘ was able to pick 7 of the eight prop bets correctly to get 8 total points.

 88.
Congratulations go out to ‘djobie’ for his terrific job of making prop picks for the Big Game, garnering more points than any other contestant, despite not picking the Super Bowl LVIII winner. ‘djobie’ cashed in with the winning prize of $250 for his efforts!

 89.
‘djobie’ actually sat alone at the top of the leader board with not just the most points, but the most correct props! With more than 6 props correct, in addition to the grand prize, ”djobie’ grabbed an extra prize from reduced-juice leader BetAnySports. BAS gave players who picked 6 or more props right $25 in free betting cash to use at betanysports.eu. ‘GregS’ was right behind our winner with 6 props correct and is also elgible for the betting cash at betanysports.eu.

 90.
At OSGA we try to make our annual Super Bowl Contest easy, but two years back increased the number of picks to be crowned the winner. Players had to pick 8 prop bets, up from 6, and the winner of Super Bowl LVIII against the spread. Players also had to pick the total of the Big Game for the tie-breaker and a shot at an extra prize.

 91.
This year the Super Easy, Super Bowl contest paid out a whopping $500 for any players who could correctly pick all 8 prop bets. Two of the selections really sunk players’ chances. The big one, picked by over 60% of contest participants, was a shot at 2 points – “Which player scores a TD?”, with Deebo vs KC’s Rashee Rice or neither for 2 points. Almost a trick question, only 38% of players, plus our contest winner had ‘Neither Players Score’ for 2 points. Interestingly, almost every other player picked Deebo! There were also a huge amount of picks for Christian McCaffrey to gain more yards rushing than Travis Kelce receiving. McCaffrey got 80 on the ground (+80 receiving) to Kelce’s 93 yards.

 92.
The odd score of 25-22, for a total of 47, kept players from cashing our final game-related prize. The final prize was $50 for any player who picked the exact total for SBLVIII. There were some 45s and two 48s, but no one had that exact, odd final score total.

 93.
So, another year of NFL is completed. And OSGA Members cashed in throughout the season. Now, all eyes are turned towards March and the return of the OSGA NCAA Tournament Challenge, where OSGA members will be vying for double prizes throughout the tourney. Become a Member to win more and get more ways to win at OSGA.

 111.
We are happy to announce the winners of the 2023 OSGA Progressive Pick ‘Em!

 112.

The 18th year for the OSGA NFL Progressive Pick ‘Em saw the jackpot grow to the maxiumum of $1800 because, over the entire season, not a single player was able to pick a perfect card. The weekly prize winners did cash in often, with sportsbook prizes handed out over 18 weeks, and the final leaderboard saw some of the widest winning margins we have seen in years.

 113.
This was an NFL season that saw huge upsets, key injuries and dashed hopes for teams early in the season that ruined most Survivor Pools in the first three weeks of the season. And it continued. The Eagles went from 10-1 to limping into the playoffs, losing five of their last 6, Buffalo struggled early and were dominate late, Kansas City was very un-KClike for the majority of the season and the the rise of teams like Houston, behind rookie CJ Stroud and Cleveland with the best story of the year, Joe Flacco, made picking games every week a virtual crapshoot. This caused the weekly contest prize that builds at $100 per week for a perfect card to never be hit! Many weeks came down to the tie-breaker and, as evidence of the tough task of picking winners in 2023, just three players achieved at least 19,000 total points.

 114.
Congratulations to “Caldwell” who averaged more than 10 wins a week for the entire season to win the 2023 OSGA Progressive Pick ‘Em, despite never capturing the weekly prize! With extra points awarded for a correct Monday Night Football pick and 187 winners, “Caldwell” amassed 19,600 points, crushing the rest of the field by 500 points, despite never winning a single weekly prize! This year’s pool was again guaranteed, but again it was a moot point, with no players achieving a perfect card in the 18 weeks of the regular season. In fact, there were only two weeks where a player only missed the big money with one incorrect pick, every other week saw two or more losses by all players. “Caldwell” pulled ahead towards the end of the season and cruised to victory, cashing for 50% of the final pool money – $900.

 115.
The first four places at the end of the season are all winners in the OSGA Progressive Pick ‘Em and after nearly 300 games, tie-breakers still needed to be used to determine the final standings. “hl928” and “JNoss” tied for with 19,000 points, so we had to go to the season-long tie breakers. It was so close that we had to go to second tie-breaker! “hl928” and “JNoss” each picked 181 games correctly and were still tied after the first deciding factor, so we had to use the second tie breaker, the amount of correct weekly tie-breaker picks. Here is where “hl928” pulled ahead with eight correct picks to “JNoss’s” seven, taking second place and the $450 prize for the runner-up. “JNoss” was awarded 15% of the total prize pool, good enough for $270!

 116.
Two players were also tied for fourth place and “APO” and “DC” had strong showings all season long, each ending the 2023 season with 18,900 points, missing the bigger money by just one, 100-point pick. Again we had to implement the tie-breaker and this time the first tie breaker, the number of correct picks, was all that was needed. “APO” claimed the $180 prize with 179 correct picks, edging out “DC”, who picked less games correctly (176), but achieved the massive point total with more weekly tie-breakers and the 200 points that comes with those correct picks.

 117.
We would like to thank all the players and sponsors in the 18th annual OSGA Progressive Pick ’em. Sponsors included Jazz Sports, BetAnySports and BetOnline, ponying up prizes all season long. These sportsbooks offered varying weekly prizes, from free plays and free cash and made good on over $1000 worth of no-deposit, free bets.

 118.
Players should look out for our annual NCAA Tournament contest and OSGA members should keep their eyes on osgamembers.com for our Playoff Bracket Challenge and annual Members Only Super Bowl contest in just one month!

 140.
In the wake of Penn Entertainment introducing EPSNBet, rumor has it that two more sports giants are looking to get into the sports betting game.

 141.

 142.

 143.

 144.
Who will be the next big company to get into sports betting?

 145.
ESPN and Penn Entertainment revealed its new logo for ESPNBet which will start in November. The company will launch in all 16 states that Penn was licensed when it was partnered with Barstool Sports and it appears Barstool will still maintain its licenses to operate separately as well. There is an expectation that ESPN may do some sort of cross promotion that will give bettors access to the paid ESPN app and content for free in exchange for holding a BetESPN account.

 146.
Similarly, Fanatics, the sports merchandise licensing company, which began operating this year in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland and Ohio and are expected to launch in almost every state where they have already received a license, including New York, in the next few months. The company offers “Fan Cash” in exchange for wagers with 5% fan cash on same game parlays, 3% on regular parlays and 1% on all other bets. Fan cash is a rebate on products offered on the Fanatics website. So, if a bettor wagered $500 on a same game parlay, they would get $25 to use towards the purchase of something at Fanatics, although the discount is only on regular priced items. So technically, to get a free NFL jersey valued at $200, a person would need to wager $4,000 on same game parlays or $6,000 on parlays or $20,000 on single game bets. It really is no different than loyalty cashbacks offered elsewhere, but appeals to many fans since they get actual merchandise.

 147.
Next sports giant to take the plunge

 148.
After hearing about the two latest launches, I started researching and asking contacts if they know of any other companies that may be considering a foray into sports betting as well. My thinking was that if Fanatics could offer sports betting, then maybe Nike, Reebok or Under Armour would follow suit. As it turns out, there are two companies that I am told who are seriously looking at expanding into sports betting although none of them are apparel companies. The two companies? Warner Brothers Discovery and Underdog Fantasy.

 149.
The Warner Brothers Discovery Networks run various channels, although the two that have a sports focus are TBS and to a lesser degree TNT. TBS has over 90 million subscribed households and are one of the biggest broadcasters of live sports, along with ESPN. They focus on MLB, NHL, NBA and the NCAA, along with wrestling. They are also the hosting network for all Atlanta based teams. Like ESPN they have a large worldwide following that will be of interest to bettors in the U.S. who were born elsewhere. The company even has a Spanish network that offers a broadcast to Americans born in Latin America interested in soccer matches and baseball and basketball games. From the rumors the analysts have been telling me, Warner Brothers was looking at sports betting even before ESPN but wanted to make sure that a foray into betting would not harm their reputation, since sports is only a small part of their overall business, unlike ESPN. As well, since Georgia has yet to legalize sports betting, there is some belief the company may be waiting for legal sports betting in Georgia and may partner with another Atlanta based company, such as Coca Cola, to make a huge splash into the industry that would immediately vault them to the top. Asked if their move into sports was imminent, I was told that it won’t be in the next few months, but we will likely hear something about BetTBS by 2025 or 2026.

 150.
Fantasy games to sports betting

 151.
The other company apparently sniffing about in the sports betting space is Underdog Fantasy. Naturally, Underdog is not as old or famous as DraftKings or FanDuel, but they have a very large following and are growing each year. Underdog Fantasy was founded in 2020 by New York based businessman Jeremy Levine and has received funding by several wealthy individuals, including Mark Cuban and Kevin Durant. Unlike DraftKings, FanDuel and even Yahoo Daily Fantasy, which rely on salary caps to pick players for fantasy contests, Underdog utilizes a “best ball” format for year long contests, where Underdog clients participate in snake drafts to pick players and then use them in head-to-head matchups to score points based on a scoring system for each sport. The year long NFL contest called NFL Best Ball Mania has a $15 million prize pool including $3 million to the winner making it the biggest fantasy sports contest in the world. The entry fee is only $25 and is limited to 150 entries per person. The company also has similar contests for daily sports as well as a pick ‘em contest for props. Some states allow best ball contests because they are still seen as skill games but require a sports betting license for pick ‘em games, because they are seen as sports betting. So, if the state has not legalized sports betting or if the fee to offer it is astronomical, Underdog does not offer daily pick ‘em games in those states. DraftKings and Yahoo borrowed the best ball format from Underdog and has launched it on their sites too.

 152.
One analyst I spoke to who knows the staff at Underdog well, has told me that Underdog feels if they launched into sports betting, they could make a bigger splash than even FanDuel or DraftKings because they have staff who know more about player performances than players themselves and could use their current staff as traders, which will lower costs. They also feel that they could make a huge profit in sports betting by avoiding high tax and high license fee states such as New York. Instead focusing on states where Underdog Fantasy is very well known and has a large client base, such as New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia and Tennessee, as starters. In that regard they wouldn’t be looking for the volume that DraftKings and FanDuel are and thus wouldn’t need to spend as much on advertising. Cross promotions could involve incentives offered by its investors like Mark Cuban. Along with all traditional team sports, Underdog also currently has contests for Esports, MMA, NASCAR and even F1. Asked when Underdog may be looking at launching a bid into sports betting, the analyst said he wouldn’t be too surprised to see an announcement before the NCAA Tournament begins in 2024.

 153.
So, ESPN and Fanatics are the talk of the town now as many expect them to make a massive splash into the sports betting market in the U.S. But, if the rumors are true, TBS and Underdog Fantasy may not be too far behind and they have the backing to be just as large as the ESPN and Fanatics juggernauts.

 201.
With the recent closure of FoxBet in the U.S., Hartley examines a rumor that BallyBet may be the next sportsbook to call it quits for American sports bettors.

 204.

 205.
Bally Bet could be the next sportsbook to close in the U.S.

 206.
Bally’s Corp announced in May that it was revamping its sports betting platform, partnering with Kambi in the process, starting in July as it wanted to provide a better sports betting experience. The company currently operates Bally Bet in six states including Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, New York, Virginia and the province of Ontario and they are near the bottom of revenue in every state. In fact, in New York Bally Bet had just $338,000 in total revenue for the first year (they launched in July so it represented 6 months of revenue) but that figure barely covered the licensing fee in the state and 2023 to date isn’t much better. In comparison, Fan Duel had about $650 million in revenue in its first year, DraftKings had about $355 million, BetCaesars had around $215 million and BetMGM had over $80 million in gross gaming revenue. The other books operating in the state, including BetRivers, WynnBet, PointsBet, ResortsWorld and BallyBet, only had 5% of the handle and revenue, making one wonder what their future is also, but that’s a different article altogether.

 207.
I contacted one of the speakers at the SBC conference who was discussing the future of the U.S. interactive market, including sports betting, and asked if he had any opinion on the future of BallyBet and he said that he has no doubt Bally Bet is on the way out and is just looking for a way to escape that keeps the shareholders satisfied.

 208.
“Don’t quote me personally on this, but I’d be quite surprised if Bally’s has any real long-term plans for their sports betting product. Undoubtedly, the company believed its name recognition would take it to the top, but they are really known for their land-based casino products and hotels, not sports betting. And let’s not try to put lipstick on a pig, even in states where they have physical casinos, the sports betting revenue has been abysmal. If I recall correctly, they have just over zero percent of the market share in Indiana, despite owning a casino hotel in Evansville, and the company has done nothing in Colorado, where they own a lot of their properties. I believe in New Jersey they didn’t even launch Bally Bet despite the large Atlantic City hotel and instead used PointsBet who itself couldn’t make a go of it in the USA.

 209.
I understand the decision to put a halt to the BallyBet to fix the product, but the company executive is smart and they know the issue isn’t the product itself, but rather just being a small fish in a big pool with the sharks ready to eat them at any moment. The only companies with any notable market share at this time in U.S. markets are FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, BetCaesars and Barstool Sports and the other companies are scrambling to pick up the crumbs. There is just no future for BallyBet regardless of what they do to better the platform.”

 210.
I asked the contact why he believed they are even bothering to fix the sports product then rather than just pulling out altogether as FoxBet recently announced.

 211.

 212.

 213.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if the ultimate target is a partnership.”

 214.

 215.
“Two of the biggest assets they have are licenses in markets that have strict limitations on the number that can operate and brand recognition for their slots. If you go to any casino most of the slots are either Bally’s, IGT, Aristocrat, Scientific Games and Kambi. And in states where they will be able to offer online casinos, I assume they will do well. But they need the product to be good all around in order to flip it and I think they are working with Kambi to create a product that has good intrinsic value both in the area of sports betting and casino play that might be of interest to one of the other foreign operators that are eying the U.S. market. And, it might be of interest to the big boys who would love another skin with the Bally’s name to use for a casino/slots only product in the future.

 216.
Kambi still has connections to the Kindred Group through its sale of Unibet a decade ago and they have connections to LeoVegas, which was purchased by MGM. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if the ultimate target is a partnership with Kindred or some sort of sale to MGM who would use the Bally’s name for states where it can offer casino betting. It could also be part of a larger amalgamation that includes Unibet and MGM. Right now, online casinos are limited, but they are going to blow up in the next few years and in that space the Bally’s name could be quite valuable. It’s also feasible that Bally’s will become a B2B company that licenses its name for online casino betting but allows the other company to use whatever sports betting features they come up with as part of the purchaser’s sports betting platform.”

 217.
It appears my contact could be right. In the area of physical slot machines there is really no bigger name than Bally’s, but there are no sportsbooks called IGTBet, SGBet, AristocratBet or KambiBet because those companies realized there was really no place for them in the sports betting field other than as a B2B supplier of information and data, and their strength was the casino games and particularly slot games, which they simply license to online casino companies. I have no doubt that Bally’s has few regrets in trying to launch a sports betting product, but they must now have come to the realization that there is no place in the USA for them as a B2C sports betting company and are now exploring opportunities of how to leave and get something back for their shareholders, so it’s not a complete waste of money. And as PointsBet discovered, the licenses in some states, particularly New York, can be quite valuable to a company who may be interested in taking over the license without having to reapply on its own. But it’s uncertain what other “Fanatics-type sports books” are out there with endless resources that may be interested. One name that has arisen is Bet365, which applied for a New York license and was turned down, but sources I spoke to at Bet365 recently have told me they dodged a bullet and as long as New York wants 51% tax, it’s a losing proposition. And as for the other states where BallyBet is licensed, Bet365 already has licenses in Colorado, Iowa and Virginia. It’s doubtful Bet365 would be prepared to fork out a lot of money just for access to Arizona and Indiana. And Entain (formerly Ladbrokes-Coral) is already affiliated with BetMGM and Bwin-Party, so it’s doubtful they will have any interest in BallyBet’s licenses since BetMGM is operating everywhere.

 218.
So, if the rumors are true and if my contact is accurate, we are likely seeing the last of BallyBet as a stand-alone sports betting product in the United States and news will come in the next few months of a merger with an existing operation or sale of the product to a name like MGM. And if there is no improvement to the sports product or if they can’t find an interested partner, then, as was the case with FoxBet, the announcement will be that BallyBet simply couldn’t make a go of it in the U.S. and are just leaving the sports betting space.

 247.
We are happy to announce jtb1 as the winner of the 2023 OSGA NCAA Bracket Challenge!

 248.

What a crazy March of NCAA Basketball! The NCAA Tournament that was full of upsets, buzzers beaters and dominance by one team has ended and so has the annual OSGA NCAA Bracket Challenge. The 21st year for the bracket challenge featured a $10K perfect bracket prize, a $1000 prize pool, boosted prizes for OSGA Members and Sweet 16 prizes from top online sportsbook, BetAnySports.

 249.
We are happy to announce “jtb1” as the winner of the 2023 OSGA NCAA Bracket Challenge! jtb1 had UConn winning the Championship game and that proved to be the deciding factor after all of the #1, #2 and #3 seeds were eliminated before the Final Four. He had a huge five point winning margin by collecting 81 points to cash for a whopping $500 cash prize!

 250.
“patek” was near the top of the leaderboard throughout much of the tourney, firing 40 correct picks, amassing 44 points after the first two rounds! But five winners for jtb1 in the Sweet 16, dropped patek to second place. He finished with 76 points, good for a $250 prize. However, Patek is an OSGA VIP Member and finished in the top four spots on the leaderboard, so he gets a Boosted Prize! We are awarding $500 to patek and thank him for being an OSGA Member!

 252.
In any tourney bracket contest, they key to winning is simply having the team that hoists the trophy and cuts down the nets, as the winner is worth 10 points, as are the two combined Final Four games. The dominance by Connecticut sealed the deal for everyone who cashed for a prize. UConn backers leapfrogged the field to the front of the leaderboard, as all of the top 5 finishers had the Huskies to win it all.

 253.
“Mike208” was one of those players. He came from way down the leaderboard to wind up in fourth place with 67 points, despite picking just 38 tourney games correctly. He’ll collect $50 cash for his outstanding effort.

 254.
Rounding out the prize winners is “jimbo“, who captured the third place prize of $100.He had the same amount of correct picks in the first two rounds as the tourney winner, but as the games were worth more and more points, he faltered to wind up in 3rd place with 66 points.

 255.
What a great year for the contest and the NCAA Tournament overall! Finally getting to watch the excitement of the players, experience the nail biting finishes and seeing an OSGA member cash in with a boosted prize made 2023 one of our favorites in 21 years of offering the NCAA Bracket Challenge.

 256.
Congratulations to everyone who played and to these who cashed in! Head to the OSGA NCAA Bracket Challenge leaderboard to check the standings and see how you fared versus other players. 314.
We are happy to announce the winners of the 2022 OSGA Progressive Pick 'Em!

 315.

The 17th year for the OSGA NFL Progressive Pick ‘Em saw the jackpot grow to the maxiumum of $1800 because, over the entire season, no player managed to get a perfect card. The weekly prize winners did cash in often, with 19 sportsbook prizes handed out over 18 weeks, and the final leaderboard saw just a 300 points separating first place from 7th.

 316.
this was a wild and wacky NFL season, with huge upsets that ruined most Survivor Pools in the first three weeks of the season. And it continued. Tom Brady and the Bucs were terrible for most of the year, the defending Super Bowl champs looked like they were in tank mode and teams like Seattle and Jacksonville were surprisingly unpredictable. This cause the weekly contest prize that builds at $100 per week for a perfect card to neve be hit! Still, many weeks came down to the tie-breaker and it took over 19,000 points to win the Grand Prize.

 317.
Congratulations to “Smoke Porterhouse” who averaged more than 10 wins a week for the entire season to win the 2022 OSGA Progressive Pick ‘Em, despite never capturing the weekly prize! Adding in the extra points awarded for a correct Monday Night Football pick and “Smoke Porterhouse” amassed 19,100 points, shockingly the same total as the winner last year! This year’s pool was again guaranteed and after a big win last year, we had hoped to see something similar in 2022. But even in the last week of the NFL season, there were big upsets crushing many players chances of the big payout. Though “Smoke” was sweating it out, he cashed for 50% of the final pool money – $900.

 318.
The first five places at the end of the season are all winners in the OSGA Progressive Pick ‘Em and after more than 500 games, just 300 points separated all of the prize recipients. Long-time OSGA contest participants “H8H8rs” and “tajinxs” tied for runner-up, just 200 points off the leader with 18,900 points. This year we reverted back to paying winners who tie by splitting prizes. So “H8H8rs” and “tajinxs” a split the 2nd and third places prizes totaling $680.

 319.
Fourth place also tied and “Halo julio”, “PurdyThyme42069” and “deanna61” has strong showings all season long, and each ended the 2022 season with 18,800 points, missing bigger money by just one, 100-point pick. They will split the fourth and 5th place prizes to get $90 apiece.

 320.
Let us know in the comments below whether you think we should continue to split prizes, thus rewarding more players, or use a tie-breaker involving most correct picks for the season to determine prizes.

 321.
We would like to thank all the players and sponsors in the 17th annual OSGA Progressive Pick ’em. Sponsors included Jazz Sports, BetAnySports and BetUS, with BetUS ponying up double prizes in the week where there was an exact tie between players. These sportsbooks offered varying weekly prizes, from free plays and free cash and made good on over $1000 worth of no-deposit, free bets.

 322.
Players who are not members should look out for our annual NCAA Tournament contest and OSGA members should keep their eyes on osgamembers.com for our annual Members Only Super Bowl contest in just one month!

 343.
According to a rumor, BetMGM is looking to expand their foothold in the US online gambling market and MGM is ripe to end a a five year-old agreement with Entain by purchasing the company.

 344.

Will MGM gobble up EU giant Entain to expand their online gambling presence?

 345.
One of the largest British bookmaking sites is Entain. The name may not be familiar with many American bettors, but they likely recognize several of the companies that Entain owns, including Ladbrokes Coral, Bwin, Party Poker and Sportingbet. The company is also a 50-50 partner with MGM for the BetMGM module. That deal was completed in 2018 with each company contributing $100 million and the agreement that Entain would provide all the lines and digital gambling options for MGM, who itself would concentrate on its physical casinos.

 346.
Looking to get a foothold in the U.S. market after SCOTUS struck down PASPA in 2017, Entain (previously GVC Holdings), set up the partnership which was expected to be a good deal for both companies, as MGM felt that the U.S. online betting market would take a while to take off. They were wrong.

 347.
The North American sports betting market has exploded with 22 states currently offering mobile betting and four states expected to begin online betting soon. In fact, it is believed that by 2024 over 30 states in the U.S., as well as Ontario, will have licensed and regulated online sportsbooks. And in markets that approved online casino wagering, BetMGM is usually at or near the top.

 348.
States with regulated online casino wagering include New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Nevada and in Canada, Ontario has legalized all forms of gambling. It also believed that within the next year Indiana, New York and Ohio will start offering online casino gambling too, along with sports betting, and if states can work out deal with the Tribes that number could explode even more. Entain’s main UK competitors, Flutter Entertainment and William Hill have already entered the U.S. market via William Hill’s partnership with Caesars Entertainment and Flutter’s partnership with Golden Nugget in New Jersey, as well as through their ownership of TVG horse racing network. BetMGM revenues have exceeded expectations and in 2021 BetMGM had almost a $850 million dollars in net revenue. For 2022 that figure is expected to nearly double. BetMGM is still not profitable, but MGM said it expects to see profits in 2023.

 349.
MGM ready to make a move

 350.
According to a source with strong connections to MGM, the company realized the partnership mistake almost immediately and near the start of the pandemic felt the best option to get full control of BetMGM was to purchase Entain. While it’s not certain what MGM wants with the non-North American portion of the company, there are many at MGM who believe that online gambling will grow exponentially in Europe, Asia, Australia and South America in the near future and in those countries the brand name Ladbrokes, Bwin and SportingBet are more recognized than BetMGM, plus staff in those countries will have more local knowledge of how to attract new bettors. More importantly staff in those countries would know the political landscape there. So, MGM is hoping that by buying Entain it could have a larger international online presence and at the same time cut out the competition.

 351.
Consequently, MGM tried to buy Entain in January 2021 offering a little over $11 billion to purchase the company. Entain rejected it immediately saying the offer wasn’t adequate. Several months later DraftKings doubled that offer to $22 billion USD, which was clearly more than Entain was worth, so much so that Entain’s stock price rose sharply while DraftKings stock plummeted. The partnership agreement between MGM and Entain, however, allows MGM to veto any partnership deals between Entain and another North American company and according to all reports MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle threatened to use that veto if Entain took the DraftKings offer, so Entain turned it down using the excuse that it still wasn’t enough.

 352.
Since that offer was made, MGM apparently realizes that the threats of takeover by other entities will continue. So, according to my source, MGM now is prepared to step up to the plate and “do whatever it takes” to acquire Entain or, at the very least, buy out the North American operations of Entain. It won’t come cheaply, however, since in a 2021 shareholder’s meeting Entain said that BetMGM has generated five times the revenue it was expecting when it made the deal.

 353.
MGM feels that it now has the skills, technology and personnel to run BetMGM on its own and doesn’t need the resources provided by Entain. And Hornbuckle has insinuated that it’s not in the company’s philosophy to rely on others for help. So, while the source didn’t know how much MGM would offer, he felt it would be similar to DraftKings’ offer and with the British Pound’s decline in the last year, that may be too much for Entain shareholders to turn down. The dollar is currently worth approximately 85 cents against the Pound Sterling, compared to 70 cents when MGM made the original offer. Thus, an offer of $22 billion is worth far more in the UK local currency today than it was a year ago.

 354.
North America

 355.
If Entain still does not want to take the offer, then MGM is prepared to pay handsomely for the North American rights for all of BetMGM. The figure was not known at this time, although the source laughed and said “it will be a hell of a lot more than the $100 million they paid in 2018.” Numbers that have been thrown around are upwards of $2 billion. If Entain agrees to it, then MGM will effectively do the exact same thing that Caesars did with William Hill. Acquire all the North American assets of Entain, while either continuing to run the non-North American portion of Entain on its own or selling it off to another company, as Caesars did when they sold the non-North American assets of William Hill to 888.

 356.
If MGM is only interested in North America, would DraftKings still be interested in the non-North American part of Entain? Probably, but not at the valuation they offered previously. There is no doubt that DraftKings’ offer was to help lower the competition in the United States and this deal wouldn’t help that. Then again, DraftKings would love to make an impact in the rest of the world to compete with Flutter and a purchase of Entain and sell-off of EU assets by MGM may be the golden opportunity.
