The Florence Cathedral, or Duomo, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. This magnificent Gothic cathedral, with its iconic red-tiled dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, dominates the city’s skyline. The cathedral’s facade, adorned with intricate marble panels in shades of green, pink, and white, is a masterpiece of Renaissance design. Climbing to the top of the dome offers panoramic views of Florence and is a must-do for any visitor.

Adjacent to the cathedral is the Baptistery of St. John, one of the oldest buildings in Florence. The Baptistery is renowned for its bronze doors, particularly the "Gates of Paradise" by Lorenzo Ghiberti, which depict scenes from the Old Testament in exquisite detail. The interior of the Baptistery, with its stunning mosaics and marble floors, is equally impressive and provides a fascinating glimpse into Florence’s religious heritage.

Another architectural marvel is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the world. The Uffizi houses an unparalleled collection of Renaissance art, including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael. The gallery’s corridors are adorned with ancient sculptures and frescoes, creating a sense of walking through a living museum. Highlights include Botticelli’s "The Birth of Venus" and Michelangelo’s "Tondo Doni."

The Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s town hall, is another must-visit. This medieval fortress-palace, with its imposing tower and crenellated battlements, has been the seat of Florentine government for centuries. The palace’s richly decorated rooms, including the Hall of the Five Hundred, are filled with frescoes, sculptures, and tapestries that depict the city’s history and achievements. The palace’s tower offers stunning views of Florence and is a great spot for photography.

For a taste of Florence’s religious heritage, the Basilica of Santa Croce is a must-see. This Gothic church, known as the "Temple of the Italian Glories," is the final resting place of many famous figures, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. The long days and warm evenings make it a perfect time to explore the city’s outdoor attractions, such as the Piazzale Michelangelo and the Arno River. Summer is also the season for numerous festivals and events, including the Florence Dance Festival and the Calcio Storico, a historic football match played in Renaissance costumes.

Autumn, from September to November, is another delightful time to visit Florence. The Brancacci Chapel, located in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, is a must-see for art enthusiasts. The chapel’s frescoes, painted by Masaccio and Masolino, are considered masterpieces of early Renaissance art and provide a fascinating insight into the development of perspective and naturalism in painting.

Another hidden treasure is the San Lorenzo Market, a bustling market that offers a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and local delicacies. Tuscan cuisine, with its emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients, is a highlight of the city’s gastronomic offerings. Classic dishes such as bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak), ribollita (a hearty vegetable soup), and pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup) are must-tries, as are the city’s famous street foods, such as lampredotto (a traditional tripe sandwich) and schiacciata (a type of flatbread).

The city’s wine culture is also a must-experience. Enjoying a glass of wine and a plate of local cheeses and cured meats is a quintessential Florentine experience.

Florence is also known for its gelato, and no visit to the city is complete without indulging in this creamy treat. The dawn, tinted with a gentle bluish glow, revealed a landscape draped in frost and mystery, where every breath of chilly air carried the promise of a day steeped in nature’s poetic cadence.

In Riga, the capital that gracefully merges history with modernity, early risers were met with a silvery mist swirling around ancient cobblestone streets. The morning temperature hovered around -2°C (28°F), and a delicate frost had laid its crystalline patterns upon windowpanes and statues alike. As the city stirred awake, the persistent overcast sky hinted at a day where the sun would play hide and seek, its rays only occasionally piercing through the thick layer of clouds. By mid-morning, the mercury in Riga nudged upward to a modest 1°C (34°F), offering a fleeting warmth that quickly surrendered to the day’s cool temperament. The air, crisp and unyielding, carried the soft murmur of distant winter winds weaving through the alleyways of the old town.

Traveling westward along the Baltic coast to Liepāja, the scene unfolded with a distinctly maritime flavor. Here, the sea’s presence was palpable, its rhythmic waves gently colliding with a frost-covered shore. The morning began at a brisk 0°C (32°F), with a light, persistent drizzle that misted the city like an ephemeral veil. As the day advanced, the temperature in Liepāja inched up slightly to 2°C (36°F), but the coastal winds—chilled and restless—ensured that the atmosphere retained its invigorating edge. The sporadic showers lent an air of unpredictability, their soft patter against the harbor’s ancient piers evoking memories of long-forgotten voyages and whispered tales of the deep.

In the heart of Latvia, the city of Jelgava presented its own wintry tableau. Early morning in Jelgava was marked by an almost theatrical stillness: a layer of fresh snow, undisturbed and pristine, blanketed the town’s parks and avenues. With temperatures starting at -3°C (27°F), the quiet was punctuated only by the occasional crunch of footsteps on snow-dusted paths. As midday approached, the mercury climbed to around 0°C (32°F), and a light dusting of flurries began to fall, adding to the city’s serene, almost ethereal ambience. The fleeting warmth of the early afternoon was a gentle reminder that winter’s grip, though firm, could be softened by the transient caress of the sun’s waning rays.

Heading east to Daugavpils, Latvia’s second-largest city offered a narrative of contrast between urban bustle and the relentless embrace of winter. The day in Daugavpils began with a bracing chill, as temperatures lingered at -1°C (30°F) in the pre-dawn hours. The city’s wide avenues and modern boulevards, lined with resilient trees dusted in frost, stood as silent witnesses to the unfolding meteorological drama. By mid-morning, as the city slowly awakened, temperatures in Daugavpils edged upward to a modest 2°C (36°F), though the overcast skies maintained an almost unyielding uniformity. A few scattered clouds attempted to disrupt the monotony, but the persistent gray overhead ensured that the day remained a study in subdued elegance. By evening, the mercury dipped once more to around -2°C (28°F), reinforcing the idea that winter, though gentle in appearance, held its power with quiet resolve.

Venture a little inland to the scenic region of Kurzeme, and the countryside revealed a vista of expansive fields and dense woodlands, each shimmering under a fragile layer of ice. Here, the early morning chill was palpable, with temperatures starting as low as -4°C (25°F) amid the vast, open landscapes. As the day matured, a delicate interplay between frost and fleeting warmth emerged—the mercury climbed to a tentative 1°C (34°F) by noon, only to be whisked away by sudden gusts of cold wind that swept across the rolling meadows. In these quiet spaces, nature seemed to hold its breath, each tree and blade of grass participating in an unspoken ritual of resilience and grace.

Throughout Latvia, the day’s weather was marked by a persistent, introspective mood—a tapestry woven from threads of frost, light flurries, and the occasional gentle drizzle. The overcast skies, though seemingly somber, cast a serene light over the land, transforming everyday scenes into quiet works of art. In the small towns and rural hamlets scattered across the country, residents found solace in the simplicity of winter’s embrace. The chill in the air was not merely a reminder of the season, but a call to pause, to reflect, and to appreciate the silent beauty that winter, in all its austere glory, so generously bestows.

As the final hours of February 25, 2025, approached, Latvia was bathed in the soft luminescence of twilight. The horizon, a delicate blend of deepening blues and grays, whispered promises of another day—a day when the cycle of frost and thaw would continue its eternal dance. In every corner of the nation, from the urban heartbeat of Riga to the quiet, frost-kissed expanses of the countryside, the weather had woven a narrative of quiet resilience, a gentle reminder that even in the depths of winter, there is a profound and enduring beauty waiting to be discovered.

The Storm Beyond the Horizon

The village of Windmere had always lived under the mercy of the weather. Nestled between the cliffs and the sea, its people relied on fishing and farming to survive. But lately, something had changed. The weather had grown unpredictable—storms came without warning, the sea churned violently, and the air carried an eerie stillness before each tempest.

Among the villagers, an old sailor named Rowan had seen enough to know that this was no ordinary shift in nature. There was something deeply wrong, something that whispered through the winds. He had spent years sailing across vast waters, mapping uncharted islands, and listening to the ocean’s voice. And now, the sea was speaking again, though with a warning rather than a song.

One evening, as Rowan sat by the shore, a peculiar object washed up—a piece of a compass, rusted and cracked. It bore an insignia he hadn’t seen in decades: the mark of the lost ship Elysian. That vessel had vanished years ago, swallowed by a storm unlike any other. Some claimed it had been cursed; others believed it had sailed too far beyond the known waters, where the sky met the unknown.

Rowan took this discovery to the village’s council, a group of elders who guided Windmere through its hardships. They listened in silence as he spoke, their faces grim. Finally, the eldest among them, Matron Elira, nodded. “The storm is not natural,” she murmured. “It is a force that seeks something. And if Elysian has returned, even in fragments, we must understand why.”

Determined to find the truth, Rowan prepared his small boat for the journey ahead. He knew he couldn’t face this alone, so he sought the help of Liora, the village’s best cartographer. Her maps stretched beyond the familiar seas, marked with places long forgotten by others. She hesitated at first but eventually agreed—her heart burned with the desire to solve mysteries hidden beyond the horizon.

As they set sail, the sea seemed almost to react to their presence. The sky darkened quicker than expected, and the moonlight flickered like a dying candle. They followed the route Elysian was last known to have taken, guided by the fragmented compass and Liora’s maps. Days passed, and an uneasy stillness settled over the water. No wind, no waves, just silence. It was as if they had crossed into a place untouched by time.

Then, on the fifth night, the storm came.

The sky cracked open with thunder, and rain fell in heavy sheets. The waves rose like mountains, threatening to swallow them whole. Liora clung to the mast, trying to steer as Rowan fought against the wind. But amidst the chaos, they saw it—a silhouette emerging from the mist. It was no ordinary ship. It was Elysian, floating eerily as though it had never been lost. Its sails were torn, yet it moved forward, cutting through the water like a ghost given purpose.

Rowan and Liora steered toward it, drawn by an invisible force. As they neared, the air thickened, charged with something ancient. Climbing aboard the forsaken vessel, they found it eerily preserved, as if time had stopped the moment it vanished. The lanterns still flickered, and the tables were set as though the crew had simply stepped away.

But they were not alone.

A single figure stood at the ship’s helm. His eyes, pale as mist, locked onto Rowan and Liora. He was neither alive nor dead, trapped between worlds. He was Captain Aldric, the long-lost commander of Elysian. “You should not have come,” he said, his voice a whisper against the raging storm. “This ship does not belong to your world anymore.”

Liora stepped forward, holding out the broken compass. “Why is the sea raging? Why has the weather turned against us?”

Aldric’s expression darkened. “Because the balance was broken.”

He gestured toward the sky, where a swirling vortex churned. “We went too far,” he admitted. “Beyond where men should sail. We opened something that should have remained sealed. And now the storm follows us, demanding we return what was taken.”

Rowan and Liora exchanged glances. They knew there was only one thing to do. The broken compass had led them here, and perhaps it could guide them back—to seal whatever breach had been opened.

With great effort, they retrieved the ship’s old anchor, heavy and covered in strange markings. As they cast it into the depths, a shift rippled through the air. The storm howled one last time before beginning to subside. Aldric nodded in silent gratitude before fading like mist under the sun.

By dawn, Elysian was gone. The sea had calmed, and the sky was clear. As Rowan and Liora turned their boat back toward Windmere, they knew that they had not just survived a storm but had rewritten the fate of the sea itself.

Windmere would always live at the mercy of the weather, but now, at least, the sea would rest—for a time.

Typhoon Hinnamnor forces cancellation of flights, ferry services

Taipei, September Taipei Hinnamnor canceled nearly 40 flights and more than 100 ferry services across Taiwan on Saturday, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) said.
