<p>As more electric vehicles (<a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/ev/">EV</a>) hit the road, there’s a growing need for a redundant and reliable <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/ev-charger">charging network</a> along highways. While Malaysia’s EV charging infrastructure is growing at a rapid pace, there’s still a lot that needs to be done if the country aims to have EVs represent 15% of total new vehicles registered by 2030. </p>
<p>We recently visited Germany and we checked out what we think is the most epic DC charging hub yet. This fine example should serve as a template for high-powered EV Charging hubs along interstate highways in Malaysia. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sortimo Innovations Park in Zusmarshausen</h2>

<p>Located at <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/RGed47mBmKL5wgMP7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sortimo Innovations Park</a> in Zusmarshausen, Germany, this <a href="https://www.plugshare.com/location/332194" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EV charging location</a> is a very convenient charging stop along the Autobahn if you’re driving between Munich and Stuttgart. At the moment, there are over 70 charge points which provides EV owners the confidence of high DC charger availability. Under its phase two expansion plan, the number of charge points would be increased to 144, which has an expected capacity to charge 4,000 EVs per day. </p>
<p>As you would expect from a typical highway R&R, there are F&B outlets, children’s playground and toilet facilities on site. The main building houses shopping and retail spaces and the park also doubles as an events and electromobility exhibition space. </p>

<p>The Sortimo Innovations Park itself provides a total of 60 DC chargers and this is supplemented by another 12 chargers from the Tesla Supercharger. This charging hub is not only open to passenger EVs but also to larger vehicles including electric buses.</p>

<p>Being an eMobility hub, the location also has chargers for electric bikes and scooters, located near the F&B facility. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">35kW to 300kW DC fast charging options</h2>

<p>Sortimo has deployed a total of 60 DC Charging points which consists of 24 Ultra-fast DC Charge points that can push 300kW and beyond, while the remaining 36 free-standing units are rated for 35kW. The Ultra-fast DC chargers are covered and they are deployed under a “mushroom” like designed column which has 4 ceiling-mounted CCS2 cables each. </p>

<p>If you’re not in a hurry and plan to make a longer stop of at least an hour, the slower 35kW DC chargers are the ideal option. Not only it is cheaper, but you can take your time to rest and have a meal without the need to rush out to move your vehicle when it is fully charged ahead of schedule. </p>
<p>If you have an EV with a 70kWh battery, an hour should be enough to get you from 30-80%. Since these DC chargers are pushing a lower power output, you won’t need to worry much about the charging curve if you plan to charge your EV to 100%. After all, the charging rate is based on kWh consumed, rather than time. </p>
<p>It is also worth noting that these freestanding DC charge points are quite flexible as it has a spring base which allows you to stretch the cable if required. </p>

<p>Unlike the slower DC charge points which are deployed in an outdoor car park arrangement, the 24x 300kW DC charge points are installed in a petrol station-style forecourt layout. In front of the building’s covered entrance, there are a total of 6 columns with 4 charging bays each. The cables with CCS2 nozzles are suspended from the roof allowing the flexibility to support various vehicles including electric buses. </p>

<p>As you can see above, two electric buses are being juiced up and they occupy two lots each. Despite the peak summer holiday season, the location seems to be very underutilised and it has loads of capacity to support more EV users along the Autobahn. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sortimo EV Charging Station activation and pricing</h2>

<p>The Sortimo EV Chargers can be activated via the eLoaded app which is available on both <a href="https://apps.apple.com/de/app/eloaded/id1574170412" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple App Store</a> and <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.eloaded.app&hl=de&gl=US" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google Play Store</a>. If your EV comes with its own EV charging card or app (e.g. BMW Charging, Mercedes me Charge, Charge myHyundai, ChargeNow), you can activate them as well thanks to Sortimo’s roaming arrangement with several charging service partners. </p>

<p>If you don’t have an app, don’t worry. You can also activate and pay via your credit or debit cards (Mastercard/Visa) from a central kiosk. Just make sure you take note of the charger number from the label attached to the nozzle before making a payment. Take note that the building is only open from 6am to 10pm daily, and you’ll need to use the app if you plan to charge <a href="https://sortimo-innovationspark.de/laden/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outside the opening hours</a>. </p>
<p>What’s interesting is that the DC charging process will start automatically once you plug the cable into your vehicle. This is to ensure that the charger is connected and working fine before you make the payment to unlock the full speed. </p>
<p>The outdoor freestanding DC charge points are priced at <strong>EUR 0.45 per kWh</strong> for 35kW, and it can go up to 140kW if you opt for the higher <strong>EUR 0.59 per kWh rate</strong>. Meanwhile, the covered DC charge points at the forecourt capable of doing 300kW are priced at <strong>EUR 0.59 per kWh</strong>.</p>
<p>When we played around with the kiosk, we noticed that the chargers are capable of pushing up to 475kW. From the looks of it, these chargers are able to deliver a higher output if there’s sufficient power capacity. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">V3 Tesla Supercharger</h2>

<p>In addition to the 70 DC charge points, the location is also home to a <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/tesla-supercharger">V3 Tesla Supercharger</a> with 12 stalls. These units are capable of pushing DC charging up to 250kW, which should give a Tesla Model Y up to 270km of range in 15 minutes. If you have a Tesla, you don’t need to fiddle with an app, as it offers a seamless Plug and Charge experience. </p>
<p>In Germany, the Tesla Supercharger is priced at EUR 0.50 per kWh. Tesla also imposes an idle fee of up to EUR 1.00 per minute when the station is 100% occupied.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nio Power Swap Station</h2>

<p>Another interesting addition to the park is Nio’s Power Swap Station. This is essentially an EV battery-swapping station which can swap a Nio EV’s battery for a fully charged unit in about 3 minutes. </p>

<p>During our visit, we didn’t get to see the power swap station in action, but we saw a couple of Nio ET7 in the area including a local taxi. The battery swap process is fully automated and Nio drivers can park the car and start the battery-swapping process at the touch of a button. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mega DC Charging Hubs can alleviate range anxiety concerns</h2>
<p>The EV charging hub at Sortimo Innovations Park is a prime example of how EV charging infrastructure is implemented along interstate highways to cater for mass adoption. The current typical setup of having 2-4 DC charge points per R&R will no longer be sufficient if there are more EVs especially sub-RM100K models from Proton and Perodua. Some of the biggest charging hubs planned or deployed along the highway are DC Handal’s 400kW DC charging hubs with <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2024/06/28/dc-handal-wce-trong-ev-charger-online/">4x charge points</a> on WCE and <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2023/06/23/chargev-plus-ev-charging-hub-seremban-350kw/">ChargEV’s Hyperpower EV charging hub</a> at Seremban Soundbound R&R with 8 bays.</p>
<p>Given the time it takes for a quick charge an EV for long-distance drives, the number of DC charge points at an R&R should be at least triple the number of pumps in a typical highway petrol station, if we want to replace all combustion-powered vehicles with EVs. </p>
<p>Of course, setting up an EV charging hub at this scale will require significant investments. Besides offering various incentives for buyers, Malaysia should also look into incentivising the development of EV charging infrastructure as the charging network is also a crucial factor for people thinking of switching to EVs. </p>

<p>Tesla Malaysia has introduced a new promo for the range-topping <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/tesla-model-y">Tesla Model Y</a> Performance. If you’ve been eyeing one, the EV brand is now offering extra freebies in the form of free Tesla Supercharger charging credits or free colour upgrade.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Free charging credits or free colour?</h2>

<p>The latest promo is offered exclusively for the Model Y Performance which boasts a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds and a higher top speed of 250km/h. This all-electric SUV with an AWD setup boasts 514km of WLTP-rated range on a single charge. </p>
<p>Priced from RM280,000 without options, the Model Y Performance is RM38,000 more expensive than the new <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/tesla-model-3-performance/">Model 3 Performance</a>. </p>
<p>If you get the Model Y Performance in white and standard black seats, Tesla is offering “10,000km” worth of Supercharging credits valid for one year. There’s no mention of the exact ringgit value, but as a reference, the Tesla Supercharger in Malaysia is priced at RM1.25 per kWh.</p>
<p>However, if you prefer your Tesla Model Y Performance with other exterior and interior trim options, Tesla Malaysia is offering a free colour upgrade. This is applicable to all colour options, so you could get a Model Y in Ultra Red and white interior at no extra cost. </p>

<p>This offer is valid to all Tesla Model Y variants and the low interest rate is applicable when you finance the vehicle with Maybank and Public Bank. If you plan to take up the offer with an 84-month (7 year) tenure, you’ll need to put down a higher 25% down payment. </p>

<p>French startup Lynx hasn’t had an easy time of getting headsets out the door, much less funding its small hardware startup, which is dedicated to producing its <a href="https://www.roadtovr.com/lynx-r-1-mixed-reality-headset-hands-on/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">R-1 mixed reality standalone</a>. There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel though, as Lynx CEO Stan Larroque announced that a batch of R-1 headsets should be shipping out soon.</p>
<p>Larroque details the plan to distribute an additional 400 units between July and August in <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stanlarroque/lynx/posts/4139700" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a recent Kickstarter update</a>, noting that the units were assembled earlier but were delayed due to financial issues with the assembler Compal.</p>
<p>While those issues have now been resolved and those headsets are set to ship, Larroque details what he calls an “excruciating” last 12 months, which he maintains isn’t related to the headset itself, but rather the tough fundraising environment for XR hardware in Europe.</p>
<p>“We were supposed to close a 30M€ deal at the end of April, term sheet signed and everything. And it didn’t happened [sic] because the European investor didn’t really have the money and lied to us. This was almost a death sentence, it’s the worst thing that can happen to a startup,” Larroque says.</p>

<p>Reeling from the admitted near death sentence, the company suffered another setback with a French public fund:</p>
<p>“Another one is a French public fund lying to us in their will to commit to our company. They took more than 6 months to do a due diligence, we spent hundreds of hours on the case with them (they were supposed to commit 15M€). They issued a [letter of intent] in July 2023. All that to realize they were badmouthing about us behind our backs to other potential co-investors. A VC shared those emails with me and it depressed me so much.”</p>
<p>Lynx announced some additional positive news. In the update, Larroque says the company is now collaborating with a “big financial US partner,” and remains optimistic about its product and roadmap, noting there is significant interest in defense, industrial, and medical sectors.</p>
<p>The company has attracted additional funding outside of R-1’s <a href="https://www.roadtovr.com/lynx-kickstarter-release-mixed-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">successful Kickstarter campaign</a> from late 2021, which brought in $800,000 in crowd funds. In 2019, prior to the Kickstarter, Lynx secured a seed round of $2 million. According to data obtained by <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/lynx-8919/investor_financials" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Crunchbase</em></a>, its most recent Series A secured in 2022 from Somnium Space, <a href="https://www.roadtovr.com/lynx-r1-4m-series-a-funding-somnium-space/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bringing to the startup $4 million</a>, making for a total of $6.8 million in funding to date.</p>
<p>Similar to Meta Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro, Lynx R-1 provides mixed reality experiences thanks to its passthrough sensors and onboard Snapdragon XR2 chipset, although the company hopes to make it a more open and versatile device.</p>

<p>While Malaysia is currently in the process of appointing telcos to build the second 5G network, opposition MP Wan Fayhsal raised concerns about a <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2024/06/28/wan-fayhsal-second-5g-network-malaysia-conflict-interest-flawed/">potential conflict of interest</a> with the <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/dual-5g-network">new 5G rollout model</a>. During a recent Parliament session debating about the audit, he alleged that the government’s push for a second network is a clear violation of Section 133 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (<a href="https://www.mcmc.gov.my/skmmgovmy/media/General/pdf/Act588bi_3.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMA</a>) 1998.</p>
<p>Section 133 under CMA is about the prohibition of anticompetitive conduct. It is stated that a licensee shall not engage in any conduct which has the purpose of substantially lessening competition in a communications market.</p>

<p>Responding to the allegations, Communications Minister <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/fahmi-fadzil/">Fahmi Fadzil</a> said the <a href="https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2024/07/04/fahmi-pledges-level-playing-field-in-2nd-5g-roll-out/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">issue of conflict of interest did not arise</a> during the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (<a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/mcmc/">MCMC</a>) meeting on Monday with all the mobile network operators interested in participating in the tender process for the second network. </p>
<p>Fahmi has elaborated that the MCMC will act as a regulator to ensure no dominance by one particular entity or mobile network operator and to ensure a level playing field. </p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Telco for second 5G network to be appointed by end of this year</h2>

<p>Digital Minister Gobind Singh recently said that the processing of selecting telcos for the shift from a Single Wholesale Network to a Dual Network model is expected to be completed by the end of this year. On 1st January, the MCMC issued the tender documents for interested parties to apply to be part of the development of Malaysia’s <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2024/06/21/fahmi-second-5g-network-aip-mcmc-1st-july/">second 5G network</a>. </p>
<p>The decision to have two competing networks was decided in May 2023 and the transition could only begin after Digital Nasional Berhad achieves 80% 5G population coverage and full participation of telcos by taking up equity in DNB. Originally, the shift to the Dual 5G network model was supposed to start as early as January 2024, however, the telcos only signed the Share Subscription Agreement (SSA) in December 2023 to acquire a collective 70% stake in DNB. </p>
<p>After over half a year, the four major telcos – CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and YTL, have finally completed their SSA, collectively <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2024/06/28/celcomdigi-maxis-u-mobile-ytl-complete-5g-ssa-dnb-65pct/">acquiring 65%</a> in the first 5G network. TM is expected to complete their SSA by August after acquiring the necessary shareholders’ approval. </p>
<p>It is the MCMC’s role to ensure that DNB can sustain and continue its 5G rollout despite having a second 5G network. If the intention is to encourage competition, there shouldn’t be a situation where one entity is more dominant than the other. </p>
<p>As we’ve seen during the CelcomDigi merger, the telco had to agree to <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2022/06/29/mcmc-approves-celcom-digi-merger-70mhz-of-spectrum-and-yoodo-to-be-divested/">several undertakings with the MCMC</a> to address anti-competitive behaviour in the industry. Following the merger, the telco had to return 70MHz of spectrum to MCMC, removing exclusive rights for certain business operations and divesting Yoodo. </p>
<p>The three big telcos – CelcomDigi, Maxis and U Mobile have publicly expressed their eagerness to participate in building the country’s second 5G network. </p>

<p><a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/bmw/">BMW</a> Group Malaysia will host a big launch event for the new Mini line-up later this month. Based on the teaser on <a href="https://www.mini.my/en_MY/home/happenings/new-mini-family-launch.html">Mini Malaysia’s official website</a>, we believe that the event will also be the first outing of <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2023/09/03/mini-cooper-2024-3-door-hatch-now-fully-electric-with-up-to-215hp-402km-range/">the all-new 2024 Mini Cooper SE</a>, also known as the <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/mini-electric/">Mini Electric</a>.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BMW Group Malaysia is a big tease</h2>

<p>The main marketing image for the launch event features four different Mini vehicles. Three of them including <a href="https://soyacincau.com/2024/05/21/mini-countryman-se-all4-malaysia-price-specs/">the all-electric 2024 Mini Countryman SE All4</a> as well as the ICE-based 2024 Mini Country John Cooper Works (JCW) All4 and Mini Cooper S were previously previewed at the Malaysia Autoshow back in May.</p>
<p>As for the fourth model in the picture, it is clearly the 2024 <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/mini-cooper-se/">Mini Cooper SE</a> in Blazing Blue colourway even though BMW Group Malaysia did not specifically name the model on the website. Scheduled to take place on 13 July, the Mini launch event will be held at JioSpace in Petaling Jaya and is open to the public.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mini Cooper SE 2024 to be priced at around RM200k</h2>

<p>Even though the 2024 Mini Electric was not part of BMW Group Malaysia all guns blazing outing at Malaysia Autoshow, the company still did not forget to mention at its booth during the event. If you scrolled through the digital brochure for the 2024 Mini Cooper S at the booth, you would then see the brochure for the new Mini Electric as well.</p>
<p>The document not only provides the EV’s basic specs but also lists its estimated retail price of <strong>RM199,000</strong>. Other than that, the brochure also said that customers can obtain the 2024 Mini Electric in Blazing Blue, Nanuq White, Chili Red II, Legend Grey, Sunny Side Yellow, Midnight Black II, British Racing Green, and Melting Silver although its interior only comes in Nightshade Blue.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mini Cooper SE 2024 offers more range and firepower</h2>

<p>The new Mini Electric 2024 was developed through a collaboration between BMW and <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/great-wall-motor/">Great Wall Motor (GWM)</a>. Don’t worry, the new Mini Electric was not a reskinned <a href="https://soyacincau.com/tag/ora-good-cat">Ora Good Cat</a> and was built using a new EV-specific platform.</p>
<p>Aside from the new exterior, one of the biggest upgrades that the Mini Electric 2024 offers is performance. The new model carries a 160kW (215hp) electric motor that also produces 330Nm of torque as opposed to its predecessor which has a 135kW (181hp) motor with a peak torque of 270Nm.</p>

<p>With a top speed of 170km/h, the beefier motor also helped the 2024 model to accelerate quicker from 0 to 100km/h at 6.7 seconds. As a comparison, the previous generation Mini Electric takes around 7.3 seconds to go from 0 to 100km/h.</p>
<p>The 2024 model has also been fitted with a larger capacity NCM battery at 54.2kWh, unlike its predecessor which has a 32.6kWh NCM battery. The bigger battery allows the 2024 Mini Electric to deliver a WLTP-rated range of 402km while the older model is limited to 234km.</p>
