TotalEnergies and its partners, Equinor and Shell, announce the Final Investment Decision (FID) of the second phase of the Northern Lights development, which will increase the project transport and storage capacity from 1.5 million to more than 5 million tons of CO2 per year from 2028.

The first phase of Northern Lights is completed and ready to receive CO2 from industrial emitters. Operations are expected to start this summer, with the first CO2 transportation by ship from Heidelberg Materials’ cement factory in Brevik, Norway and its injection and permanent storage into a reservoir 2,600 meters below the seabed, off the coast of Øygarden, western Norway.

The second phase announced today represents an investment of NOK 7.5 billion (~$700 million) and leverages existing onshore and offshore infrastructures. This expansion includes new onshore storage tanks, pumps, a jetty, injection wells and transport vessels – which are all expected to be completed for a start-up by the second half of 2028.

This FID of this second phase follows the signing of a 15-year commercial agreement between Northern Lights and the Swedish district energy provider, Stockholm Exergi, for the cross-border transport and storage of 900,000 tons of biogenic CO2 emissions annually, starting in 2028. Stockholm Exergi is the 5th company to commit with Northern Lights for transport and storage of its CO2 emissions, after Heidelberg Materials and Celsio in Norway, Yara in the Netherlands and Ørsted in Denmark. In addition, Northern Lights is in advanced discussions with several large European industrial customers to market the remaining storage capacity.

“I am delighted of the launch of Northern Lights phase 2, which represents a significant step forward for the CCS industry. Northern Lights can thus provide a concrete solution for the hard-to-abate industrial emitters in Europe, so that they can reduce their CO2 emissions and thereby secure their businesses’ sustainability”, said Nicolas Terraz, President Exploration & Production of TotalEnergies.

“The decision to expand our CO2 transport and storage services represents the next step in building a commercially viable CCS market in Europe. It confirms Northern Lights’ commitment to offer an effective solution for companies to reduce emissions. The investment decision is an important milestone for our company, our customers and industry partners, governments and regulators. We have jointly been working hard to establish the CCS chain and make a real difference enabling Europe to achieve climate targets”, said Tim Heijn, Managing director of Northern Lights JV.

About Northern Lights

Northern Lights offers CO2 transport and storage as a service. Our mission is to enable the reduction and removal of industrial emissions in Europe. Liquefied CO2 from capture sites is shipped to an onshore receiving terminal in western Norway, before transported by pipeline for permanent storage in a reservoir 2,600 meters under the seabed. Ready to receive CO2 from 2024, Northern Lights is the first company to offer commercial CCS services. The company has already signed two commercial agreements with Yara in the Netherlands and Ørsted in Denmark. The first phase of Northern Lights is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project. Northern Lights JV DA is a registered, incorporated General Partnership with Shared Liability (DA) owned by Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell.

About TotalEnergies and Carbon Storage

TotalEnergies’ focus is first to avoid emissions and then to reduce them by developing and deploying a systematic approach, asset-by-asset, to implement the best available technologies. For residual emissions, the Company is developing industrial projects for carbon storage. Backed by core competencies in large-scale project management, gas processing and geosciences, TotalEnergies is on track to enable significant decarbonization of hard-to-abate industrial businesses through projects such as Northern Lights in Norway, Norther Endurance Partnership in the UK, Bayou-Bend in the US, Aramis in the Netherlands and Bifrost in Denmark.

About TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies: oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables and electricity. Our more than 100,000 employees are committed to provide as many people as possible with energy that is more reliable, more affordable and more sustainable.
The British magazine also recognised CaixaBank’s independent advisory model with the award for ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for Ultra-High Net Worth (UHNW) clients’ for the second consecutive year

CaixaBank has again been awarded ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for Family Office Services 2025’ for its subsidiary OpenWealth, the largest consultancy firm for UHNW clients and family offices in Spain

Alongside the three accolades in Spain, CaixaBank’s subsidiary BPI won four awards in Portugal. This brings the CaixaBank Group’s total number of awards at the latest edition of Euromoney’s Global Private Banking Awards to seven, an all-time high.

CaixaBank Private Banking received three awards at the latest edition of the Global Private Banking Awards by British magazine Euromoney, which celebrates excellence and best practices in international private banking. Firstly, and for the third consecutive year, CaixaBank has been awarded the highest national distinction, being re-elected as the ‘Best Private Bank in Spain’.

CaixaBank Private Banking also received two further awards at the gala held in London: ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for UHNW Clients 2025’ and ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for Family Office Services 2025’, accolades that CaixaBank has received for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, BPI, a CaixaBank subsidiary, won four awards in Portugal. This brings CaixaBank Group’s total number of awards to seven —its highest tally in these international awards, which have a history spanning over 20 years.

These distinctions reinforce the CaixaBank Group’s position as the benchmark private bank in the Iberian Peninsula and are the result of the trajectory of a model built on customer-focused advisory and support through an extensive range of exclusive and innovative products and services designed to meet their needs at all times.

Belén Martín, Head of Private Banking at CaixaBank, stated: “These awards are a recognition of a long-standing history of success and a unique private banking model in Spain, based on the utmost specialisation of our managers with the aim of providing our clients with the best service at all times. These recognitions are made possible by the dedication and professionalism of our entire team, and we want to dedicate them to all our clients, who help us to keep improving day by day”.

Recognition of commitment to independent advisory services

The award for ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for UHNW Clients 2025’ acknowledges CaixaBank’s commitment to independent advisory services, a sector in which CaixaBank Private Banking leads in Spain. The entity has integrated its two specialised areas for UHNW clients into its new Independent Advisory division: ‘Independent Advisory’, catering to clients with assets between one and four million euros, and ‘Wealth,’ aimed at clients with over four million euros. CaixaBank Private Banking’s Independent Advisory service reached €20 billion in assets under management as of February—a 43% increase from a year ago (January 2024)—solidifying the entity’s leadership and benchmark status in independent advisory services in Spain. The new division, which encompasses all of the entity’s independent advisory services, manages over €47 billion in assets (end of 2024).

In 2024, CaixaBank Private Banking boosted services for UHNW clients with the launch of a new investment management platform, GPS (Global Portfolio Strategy), which integrates BlackRock’s Aladdin Wealth technology, enabling managers to offer, at no extra cost for UHNW clients, the new Advisory GPS service, which combines portfolio construction efficiency with maximum personalisation, offering clients an advanced advisory experience.

As for the award for ‘Best Private Bank in Spain for Family Office Services 2025’, received for the second consecutive year, the British magazine recognises the innovation and excellence of CaixaBank’s subsidiary OpenWealth, a pioneering independent global consultancy service in Spain aimed at clients with assets exceeding €50 million. OpenWealth has surpassed €8 billion in assets under supervision, making it not only the largest wealth consultancy for UHNW clients, but also the largest multifamily office service in Spain.

CaixaBank was the first bank in Europe to launch this fully independent and explicitly fee-based service, available to UHNW individuals regardless of whether or not they are CaixaBank clients or where their assets are deposited, even if held with other entities.

CaixaBank Private Bank

CaixaBank’s private bank model is supported by a team of more than 1,200 accredited specialised managers, with an average experience of 15 years, and 75 exclusive private banking centres, as well as 11 Wealth centres, ensuring clients always receive personalised attention.

CaixaBank Private Bank’s value proposition offers different service models tailored to the needs and preferences of each client, from those requiring comprehensive global advisory services, whether independent or non-independent, to those who prefer to manage their assets independently through a platform with global investment capabilities in securities, funds, savings insurance, and other management products.

CaixaBank, S.A., formerly Criteria CaixaCorp, is a Spanish multinational financial services company. CaixaBank is based in Valencia, with operative offices in Bilbao, Málaga, Barcelona and Madrid. CaixaBank has 5,397 branches to serve its 15.8 million customers, and has the most extensive branch network in the Spanish market. It is listed in the Bolsa de Madrid and is part of the IBEX 35.

In the heart of Paris, the Sorbonne University Cité de l’Innovation is taking shape on the Pierre et Marie Curie campus. Scheduled to open in late 2025-early 2026, it symbolizes Sorbonne University’s commitment to strengthening synergies between academic research and the socio-economic world

An ambitious architectural project

The architecture of the Sorbonne University Cité de l’Innovation reflects this ambition, embodying a mix of tradition and modernity, and located in a historic district of Paris. Conceived as a futuristic arch, the building offers a total surface area of almost 15,000 m², and will eventually accommodate around 800 people. Designed by BIG and OXO, it blends seamlessly into a prestigious architectural environment. “Four buildings designed by four renowned contemporary architects face each other: the Cité de l’Innovation designed by the famous Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA) designed by Jean Nouvel, the Albert grill designed by Edouard Albert and a building designed by Urbain Cassan on the Pierre et Marie Curie campus,” points out Dominique Pateron, Vice President Real Estate and Sustainable Development.

With its vast panoramic windows, the Cité de l’Innovation will offer a singular, unobstructed view of Notre-Dame de Paris and the Ile de la Cité. Its gently sloping façade will allow the reflection of the cathedral to be seen from the Place de l’IMA. This cohabitation of architectural styles illustrates Sorbonne Université’s ability to project itself into the future while respecting the cultural and historical heritage of Paris.

In addition to its avant-garde design, the Sorbonne University Cité de l’Innovation stands out for its commitment to sustainable development. “We chose to construct a building that is exemplary in terms of energy efficiency. This approach is part of our commitment to a sustainable future, where technological innovation is combined with respect for the environment,” asserts the vice-president. The re-vegetation of spaces, including green roofs and a hanging garden, will promote biodiversity and regulate rainwater. The building’s design, which enhances natural light and passive ventilation, minimizes energy requirements. Finally, sustainable materials and an optimized structural design reduce the use of resources while ensuring the building’s performance and durability.

Work on the Sorbonne University Cité de l’Innovation began in autumn 2022, and the exterior shell is now nearing completion. “The facades will be installed in the spring. Then we’ll finish the interior outfitting work, which will include the installation of technological equipment,” explains Dominique Pateron.

A unique ecosystem of innovation

Historically, Sorbonne University has always been very active in the field of innovation. For almost a decade, the university has incubated 230 start-ups in the fields of health, science, engineering, cultural and creative industries, and the start-ups that have emerged from Sorbonne University’s work have raised 1.5 billion euros. As a hub for technological acceleration and innovation, the Cité de l’Innovation aims to amplify this momentum by providing a framework conducive to the development of new innovative companies.

This “shared home” is designed as a veritable innovation ecosystem, bringing together, over five levels, an incubator, a business hotel (for more mature start-ups), a demonstrator, an events hub, logistics and concierge services… and a restaurant with a roof terrace that will adjoin that of the IMA. This is a unique location in France, and indeed in Europe, at the heart of one of France’s largest scientific campuses, home to over 25,000 students and the science and engineering activities of Sorbonne University.

This geographical and functional proximity between companies, researchers, technology platforms and students is a major asset. By offering direct access to academic resources (including 80 research laboratories and over 150 technology platforms), the Cité de l’Innovation will encourage unprecedented synergies between university research and the business world, and facilitate collective enrichment of ideas and the emergence of collective intelligence.

The first selected companies to be housed in the business incubator are mature businesses, with an average age of 6 years. At the same time, the university is working on services that will be offered to the various occupants of the Cité de l’Innovation.

A commitment to openness

The Cité de l’Innovation also represents a new source of influence for Sorbonne University. By welcoming companies of all sizes, from start-ups to SMEs and large corporations with access to dedicated services, it will become a focal point for all those seeking to innovate.

By integrating spaces accessible to the public, such as a panoramic events space and catering area on the top floor, seminar rooms, a demonstration space and amphitheatres, Sorbonne Universitéy also seeks to make the Cité de l’Innovation a place where people can meet and exchange ideas, where innovation is encouraged not only through research, but also through social and cultural interaction. With the Cité de l’Innovation, Sorbonne University has acquired an exceptional tool for continuing to reinvent itself and innovate in the service of society.

Repsol joins forces with Schroders Greencoat, the specialist renewables manager of Schroders Capital, as a 49% partner in a 400-megawatt (MW) wind and solar portfolio, valued at €580 million.

The portfolio includes eight wind farms, totaling 300 MW, in the northern provinces of Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel in Spain. The agreement also includes two solar plants, totaling 100 MW, in the province of Palencia. All the assets are expected to be operational during the first half of 2025.

The closing of the transaction is subject to administrative formalities by the purchaser.

This agreement is a further step in Repsol’s strategy for the renewable power business, which focuses on optimizing the financial structure and profitability of the projects by incorporating partners into the assets to maximise value generation and ensure double-digit returns.

Repsol will maintain control of the assets. As part of the transaction, in December 2024 Repsol arranged a long-term syndicated loan financing of €348 million with BBVA, Crédit Agricole CIB, Banco Sabadell, and the Official Spanish Credit Institute (ICO).

“The alliance with a partner like Schroders Greencoat, one of the world’s leading renewable infrastructure managers, at a time when there is a wide offer of renewable assets for sale, highlights the quality and attractiveness of our portfolio in the market,” said Repsol’s Executive Managing Director of Low Carbon Generation, João Costeira.

The acquisition marks the first investment from the Schroders Greencoat Europe SCSp Fund, which successfully closed its first round of funding in November 2024 with over €220m of initial capital. The fund is focused on building a diversified portfolio of energy transition assets across Europe, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy infrastructure, supplemented by an allocation to other energy transition investments in the grid infrastructure, battery storage, renewable hydrogen, energy efficiency, mobility and renewable heat sectors.

“We are delighted to have made the Fund’s first acquisition following the first close. Our partnership with Repsol signifies a first step in our investment strategy and we look forward to working together to deliver long-term value for our clients with high quality of assets all supported by long term offtake agreements,” highlighted Adam Basnett, Portfolio Manager for Schroders Greencoat.

“This transaction is a sign of our commitment to driving the energy transition in Europe with industry leaders. These assets add to our existing portfolio in Spain, a leading region for renewable energy projects where we began investing in 2022 and to expand our investments,” said Victor Monje, Head of Investments for Schroders Greencoat in Iberia.

This is the fifth operation of its kind that Repsol has carried out since November 2021. Repsol currently has 3,700 MW in operation and a global project portfolio of 60,000 MW in various stages of development. In Spain, it has more than 2,600 MW of renewable energy in operation and more than 600 MW under construction and development.

Schroders Greencoat has built a strong reputation for investment proposition execution and innovation since it was founded in 2009. It has extensive experience in energy infrastructure, managing more than 430 renewable infrastructure assets across the UK, Europe, and the US, with an aggregate net generation capacity of more than 7.41 GW.

About Schroders Greencoat

Schroders Greencoat LLP, formerly Greencoat Capital LLP, is a specialist manager dedicated to the renewable and energy transition infrastructure sector. With teams in London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Madrid, as well as in New York and Chicago, and around £9.6 billion under management, Schroders Greencoat is one of the largest dedicated managers in Europe. The strategic alliance between the two companies enables Telefónica Tech to offer the Anjana Data Platform solution in Spain so that companies and the public administration can strengthen their position in the area of data and AI management and governance.

The Andorran Family Business employs public-private partnerships as a mechanism to carry out projects and business initiatives that respond to the country’s current and future needs. This was explained by its President, Daniel Armengol, at the public-private partnership conference.

He gave examples of success such as the ski resorts, Caldea, and the Envalira tunnel, stressing that this union must be further strengthened. He indicated that “without collaboration, projects hardly see the light of day”—giving as one example the need to involve private and public initiative in issues such as housing.

The Secretary of State for Economy, Employment, and Housing, Jordi Puy, has delved into the program that will allow private companies to promote affordable rental housing. He explained that the Executive is considering, for example, actions on the “IGI of construction” and “incentives also with issues of buildability, that is, land, surface area of the homes, to make this construction more affordable and also with certain guarantees and good financing by private actors, such as banks, and also limiting the patrimonial guarantee to these operations.”

The exceptional sky of Montsek (Spain, Catalonia, province of Lleida) and the willingness to turn it into a tourist destination are the reasons why it has been internationally recognised as one of the best places in the world for astronomical observations since 2013. Salvador Ribas, Director of the Montsec Astronomical Park, explains what Star Tourism is all about and shares with us the plans for the park’s development.

Interview: Irina Rybalchenko

What is Star Tourism today? How was it developed?

The Starlight certification is the first to unite science and tourism and aims to guarantee the quality of tourist experiences—including night landscapes, stargazing, and space views, as well as the associated scientific, cultural and environmental knowledge. The recognition of science as a tourist product and, at the same time, a working method in tourism provides the basis for the development of this standard.

The Starlight Certification System (Star Tourism) was created to improve the quality of tourist services worldwide and protect the night sky in Starlight Destinations.

Star Tourism is clearly growing in places where darkness and meteorological conditions allow astronomical observation activities. In 2024 we reached 33,000 visitors, which indicates that interest in astronomical activities remains very high.

How do you plan to develop the tourist infrastructure of the park?

The Montsec Astronomical Park is a project that has already been developed for the realization of activities in communication and scientific education. At the moment, we don’t have additional space for our equipment, but we do foresee the improvement of some spaces within a few months, such as those dedicated to solar observation, or the start-up of a radio telescope that is financed with the participatory budget plan of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Do you collaborate with universities in Catalonia and France?

In our case, we have an agreement with the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona so that their students can carry out teaching activities, specifically astronomical observation practices for subjects on this topic in their Physics degrees. In addition, almost every year, we host a student from these universities for an internship in a company within our facility. Historically, we have collaborated with France on cooperative projects to disseminate astronomy and the dark sky—as we did with the Pirineus la Nit project that ended in 2021—and now we are trying to build a new project along the same lines with the partners of these past projects. We are currently preparing for a future project with the Pic du Midi.

Two years ago, you told me that by 2026 it is expected to have almost all the equipment updated with the latest technology, and that the volume of investment between 2022 and 2026 is estimated at around $1,200,000 euros. What actions have you carried out exactly?

We have carried out a complete renovation of the Ull del Montsec planetarium with a one-of-a-kind mobile dome design that is also very exceptional and almost unique in Europe for the combination of projection systems that allow 3D vision. It even has an interactive system that allows the public to intervene by deciding which object to visit. Beyond the planetarium, we have been able to convert our air conditioning system and now everything works with green energy, and we no longer have any system in regular operation that burns fossil fuels, emitting CO₂ into the atmosphere. These two actions have been very important, and we hope to add other improvements in materials and equipment that would allow us to keep the center as up-to-date as possible.

The Garden of the Universe or Garden of the Cosmos project is still a future goal at the moment. However, it must be said that we are gradually working on defining how it should be constructed, and to be able to launch this project in the next 5 or 6 years is very ambitious and will also be economically costly.

What are the plans for the park this year?

The Montsec Astronomical Park, located in the municipality of Àger, in the Noguera region, began its sixteenth season. This season will last until January 10, 2026, and will be marked by three astronomical phenomena of great relevance. First of all, 2025 will be a year of maximum solar activity. Through their daytime experiences, visitors will be able to discover, with the help of an expert astronomer, spectacular aspects of the Sun and enjoy a more dynamic observation of this star.

This year the Park will commemorate the centenary of the birth of Maria Assumpció Català, the first professional astronomer in Spain.

Finally, the Montsec Astronomical Park is a privileged place to observe several eclipses. On March 29, 2025, a partial solar eclipse with 25-30% coverage was observed, causing the brightness of that day to change and shadows to be perceived as weaker. This eclipse served as a warm-up for the so-called “Iberian Triplet” of three consecutive solar eclipses that will occur between 2026 and 2028.

Among the new features that we are preparing, the following can be highlighted:

– The Astronomy Festival, which is held every year and which this year reaches its 11th edition. This festival will offer a varied range of scientific, cultural, and leisure activities, with the aim of disseminating science among society and promoting Montsec as an Star Tourism destination.

– The “Music under the Stars” cycle, which is celebrating its 15th edition, will combine a visit to the park with a musical show by Catalan artists. The night visits allow attendees to enjoy music in a unique environment under a starry sky.

REOLUM, a Spanish company specialized in innovative solutions for decarbonization and energy transition, has awarded a consortium formed by Técnicas Reunidas and Siemens Energy the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) of the La Robla Green project, which aims to develop what will be one of Europe’s largest renewable methanol plants in the municipality of La Robla, in the Spanish province of León.

The facility, with a production capacity of 140,000 tons per year, will combine biogenic carbon from a biomass cogeneration plant with renewable hydrogen to produce e-methanol.

The project is at the forefront of the e-methanol production technologies. E-methanol is a product that will play a very important role in the decarbonization of maritime transport in its direct use as a fuel and as a raw material for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Furthermore, methanol produced from low-emission feedstocks and technologies is a key product to facilitate the decarbonization of industrial sectors that currently have high levels of emissions, such as the chemical industry or air and maritime transport.

In addition to Reolum, the project brings together the services, knowledge and capabilities of four large companies with strong specialization in decarbonization: Siemens Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Johnson Matthey and Técnicas Reunidas.

According to the scope of the contract, Siemens Energy’s work will focus on the renewable hydrogen unit and Técnicas Reunidas’ work will focus on the biogenic carbon capture and e-methanol production units. In turn, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. will be the CO2 capture licensor and Johnson Matthey the supplier of a proprietary technology, called eMERALD, which makes possible the direct hydrogenation of captured CO₂ to methanol.

This project is part of track, Técnicas Reunidas’ strategy for decarbonization, one of the main pillars of SALTA, the strategic program that Técnicas Reunidas launched last May.

The development of this engineering phase will be the previous step for the material execution of the plant, which will be carried out through an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract.

On last February 21, the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge allocated 180 million euros to the project, from NextGenerationEU funds, in the provisional resolution of the call for aids to create seven large renewable hydrogen clusters, located in the territories of Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and Leon, Catalonia and Galicia, which make up the H2 Valles Program.

About REOLUM

Reolum conceives and develops innovative projects to promote decarbonization and to advance in the energy transition, from the generation of renewable energies, green hydrogen and green e-methanol, to CO2 capture, cogeneration with biomass, both electric power and heat, as well as the supply of biomass itself.

About Técnicas Reunidas

In subsequent centuries, it became an important trading, manufacturing and cultural centre, and has historically been dubbed the Serbian Athens.

Pastry shops serve local specialties such as layered cakes made from ground nuts and cream, referred to as ‘torta’ in Serbian. Desserts also often include raspberries, one of the region’s largest exports, and historic Dunavska Street is home to many ice cream parlors.

Novi Sad currently does not have its own civil airport. The city is about a one-hour drive from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which connects it with capitals across Europe. Small Čenej Airport north of the city is used for sport and agricultural purposes. There are plans to upgrade it to serve for cargo and small-scale public transport, but the future of this initiative is uncertain.
