More and more in recent years, our lawns have evolved into complicated demanding growing responsibilities. As homeowners, business owners and landscapers we are concerned about the long-term effects of chemicals on our children, pets, and environment.</p><p>As an advocate of ecological synthetic lawns, I too seek environmentally supportive methods to keep our yards healthy and inviting, and, yes, still green and lush, too.</p><p>However, if we really want freedom from our labor in our yard and chemical free environment, perhaps we should look to the synthetic option. The demand for the perfect lawns has been building in the United States since the 1990s through proposed legislation.</p><p>There are merits to the debate of national lawn-care legislation. For instance, some members of congress have looked into various local and federal regulations focusing on a ban of the superficial use of lawn-care pesticides. With a synthetic lawn, public health issues from the use of pesticides to combat insect infestation would be a thing of the past. And let’s face it the elimination for the need of residential pesticides would make us all feel better knowing that we are not endangering future generations.</p><p>Some opponents may complain about such proposals, but evidence shows that pesticide management legislation has actually increased business prospects as homeowners seek to spend more money on the beautification of their homes and property.</p><p>Plus with a synthetic grass system, you can think of a lot of other uses for the money saved from the relief of not hiring a professional lawn care company any longer.</p><p>Obviously, hiring someone is going to cost. Owning a home has certain expenses involved. However, the demand of maintaining your house will be easier more cost efficient and environmentally safer when year lawn care is minimized. The employee had been working for the employer for more than 10 years when she was unfairly dismissed. She brought her case before the Employment Tribunal and was awarded the sum of £1,420 for loss of her statutory rights. However, the Tribunal neglected to give an explanation as to why that figure was reached.The main problem was that it was not made clear how that figure was reached. There were three potential reasons why the Tribunal awarded her that amount:* It was compensation for the loss of protection against unfair dismissal which it would have taken the employee until 17 May 2006 to acquire; or* It was compensation for the loss of the right to long notice which she had built up with the employer and did not receive; or* Both.The employer appealed against the amount awarded to the Employment Appeals Tribunal (“EAT”). It argued that the Tribunal had erred in awarding the sum of £1,420 for ‘loss of statutory rights’. The employer said that in making this award the Tribunal had used the conventional label for compensation for loss of protection from unfair dismissal and such an award normally attracted an award of around £250. By awarding the employee £1,420 the Tribunal had wildly exceeded its discretion, perhaps due to undue sympathy for the employee.The employee submitted that the Tribunal had acted within its powers and that the sum of £1,420 was awarded to reflect the fact that she had lost her statutory rights. Considering she had been employed for over 10 years, she believed that she was entitled to 10 weeks notice which would take a further 10 years to build up again, and therefore the award was justified.The appeal was allowed. The EAT ruled that the Tribunal had failed to explain why it had reached the conclusions which it had and had awarded almost six times the usual amount of compensation without an appropriate justification. Although the employee had been employed for more than 10 years and would have accordingly been entitled to compensation for the loss of the right to long notice, it was not appropriate to calculate the amount by applying the simple arithmetic multiplier which was relied upon by the Tribunal. In addition, there were no submissions made by the employee before the Tribunal regarding loss of right to long notice, and therefore an award should not have been made in this regard.The EAT ruled that the award would be recalculated by the same Tribunal after hearing the appropriate submissions.© RT COOPERS, 2006. Workout to lose weight and improve teen fitness. Novel idea! Going to the gym and exercising will improve college health and teen health. However, teen health won’t necessarily improve with exercising, and college health and teen fitness won’t get better just because people are working out.Teen health, teen fitness and college health is nearing a breaking point in our society. Of college health doesn’t improve the freshman 15 will turn into the sophomore 30. If teen fitness doesn’t get better then cancer, heart and brain problems will run avid in next generation.That’s right. Teen health today could save kids lives tomorrow. (Perfect example: teen fitness and teen health is so bad that Type II Diabetes was CREATED because of it). And college health is so bad that there is an excuse (the “freshman 15″) to overweight students being the norm.It isn’t in the numbers. Students experience competence when challenged and given prompt feedback. Students experience autonomy when they feel supported to explore, take initiative and develop and implement solutions for their problems. Students experience relatedness when they perceive others listening and responding to them. When these three needs are met, students are more intrinsically motivated and actively engaged in their learning.</p><p>Numerous studies have found that students who are more involved in setting educational goals are more likely to reach their goals. When students perceive that the primary focus of learning is to obtain external rewards, such as a grade on an exam, they often perform more poorly, think of themselves as less competent, and report greater anxiety than when they believe that exams are simply a way for them to monitor their own learning. Some studies have found that the use of external rewards actually decreased motivation for a task for which the student initially was motivated. In a 1999 examination of 128 studies that investigated the effects of external rewards on intrinsic motivations, Drs. Deci and Ryan, along with psychologist Richard Koestner, PhD, concluded that such rewards tend to have a substantially negative effect on intrinsic motivation by undermining people’s taking responsibility for motivating or regulating themselves.</p><p>Self-determination research has also identified flaws in high stakes, test focused school reforms, which despite good intentions, has led teachers and administrators to engage in precisely the types of interventions that result in poor quality learning. Dr. Ryan and colleagues found that high stakes tests tend to constrain teachers’ choices about curriculum coverage and curtail teachers’ ability to respond to students’ interests (Ryan & La Guardia, 1999). Also, psychologists Tim Urdan, PhD, and Scott Paris, PhD, found that such tests can decrease teacher enthusiasm for teaching, which has an adverse effect on students’ motivation (Urdan & Paris, 1994).</p><p>The processes described in self-determination theory may be particularly important for children with special educational needs. Researcher Michael Wehmeyer found that students with disabilities who are more self-determined are more likely to be employed and living independently in the community after completing high school than students who are less self-determined.</p><p>Research also shows that the educational benefits of self-determination principles don’t stop with high school graduation. Studies show how the orientation taken by college and medical school instructors (whether it is toward controlling students’ behavior or supporting the students’ autonomy) affects the students’ motivation and learning.<br />Significance</p><p>Self-determination theory has identified ways to better motivate students to learn at all educational levels, including those with disabilities.<br />Practical Application</p><p>Schools throughout the country are using self-determination instruction as a way to better motivate students and meet the growing need to teach children and youth ways to more fully accept responsibility for their lives by helping them to identify their needs and develop strategies to meet those needs.</p><p>Researchers have developed and evaluated instructional interventions and supports to encourage self-determination for all students, with many of these programs designed for use by students with disabilities. Many parents, researchers and policy makers have voiced concern about high rates of unemployment, under-employment and poverty experienced by students with disabilities after they complete their educational programs. Providing support for student self-determination in school settings is one way to enhance student learning and improve important post-school outcomes for students with disabilities. Schools have particularly emphasized the use of self-determination curricula with students with disabilities to meet federal mandates to actively involve students with disabilities in the Individualized Education Planning process.</p><p>Programs to promote self-determination help students acquire knowledge, skills and beliefs that meet their needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness (for example, see Steps to Self-determination by educational researchers Sharon Field and Alan Hoffman). Such programs also provide instruction aimed specifically at helping students play a more active role in educational planning (for example, see The Self-directed Individualized Education Plan by Jim Martin, Laura Huber Marshall, Laurie Maxson, & Patty Jerman).</p><p>Drs. Examples of activities used in self-determination instructional programs include reflecting on daydreams to help students decide what is important to them; teaching students how to set goals that are important to them and then, with the support of peers, family members and teachers, taking steps to achieve those goals.
