32.

The Ultimate Scientific Conjecture; it’s no longer science as we knew it!I have always held the belief that science is sacrosanct, comprising of a series of proven, testable and tested facts and theories that have stood the test of time. I have been obviously very wrong, damn wrong. Here is proof of my ignorance. There is a theory known as string theory a popular theory in science so revered and yet so unscientific! Sounds ridiculous. Yes it is, a scientific theory that is damn unscientific, a downright statement of blind faith, note I say blind faith not just a statement of faith. There is a world of difference between faith and blind faith. For a start, for starters like me, The NewScientist issue of 15th August 2009 gives me the little simplistic introduction of the problem that the string theory endeavored to solve. As most of us may not know, physics lack one coherent theory to explain the workings of nature from the minute blocks of nature to the large bodies like planets and the stars. The NewScientist publication points out that the two existing theories that explains most of the stuff observed in nature, that is the theory of gravity and the quantum theory do contradict and hence cannot both be true.Stephen Hawking also mentions this contradiction in his best seller, the Brief History of time. In an attempt to reconcile the two, the string theory emerged. The magazine goes on to say that ‘there is no agreement on how to get to one coherent theory. To attempt to solve the problem,a theory referred to as String theory is the avenue preferred by most physicists, it melds gravity and quantum mechanics by arguing that everything in nature arises from the vibration of tiny strings in 10 dimensional space time’.That is too heavy especially for me the terminology used and wow in ten dimension!??! I can hardly grasp anything beyond ’3D’ i mean three dimensions. Just hold your breath, You need not understand a bit of what I just quoted. I need not because the New Scientist goes on and speaks in a more common language. Before I quote the criticism of the NewScientist, I consider a book review of two works criticizing the string theory.A book review of two works of reputable scientific scholars highlight the great comedown of science that is the string theory. Lee Smolin and Peter Woit, two scientists criticized the string theory independently in their books. The books are ‘The trouble with physics: the rise of string theory and the fall of science’ and ‘Not even wrong; The failure of string theory and the search for unity in physical law’ authored by the two scientists respectively. The theory has been the dominant area of research in the last 20 years in the domain of unifying the two laws of science and as the authors note, ‘ the promise of the theory has remained unfulfilled’ As the book review notes. In science,a theory should make a prediction that should be tested and proven either true or false.Les Smolin and Peter Woit concludes that ‘String theory is unscientific because it has made no prediction that could prove it to be wrong or else.Another reason for dismissing the string theory approach is that it has so many variations of it, so much so that it is impossible to tell which is right. Its malleability, its flexibility also calls in for doubt, it is easily adaptable to adopt new discoveries that come into light and this has led many a prominent scientists including Richard Freyman, to say that ‘string theorists do not make predictions, they make excuses’Compare the theory as a ruler to measure the universe and its laws.Having a task of measuring the length of many objects you need a ruler. The ruler has to be stable and reliable. Just imagine having a ruler that is malleable and elastic, will you ever get the true measurements? This is the nature of the so called string theory, It is well said that apart from telling you something about the size of that thing or object that you are measuring, the process of measuring can also tell you something about the ruler, in this case, if you get the measurements of two objects to be equal yet the one is twice as long as the other, you can judge the reliability of the ruler. The authors continue to say that there is something worse, ‘the string theory has become more mathematically elaborate and its practitioners have begun to manipulate it as though the traditional scientific means of verification are totally unnecessary’ The authors goes on to say that ‘Even physicists and mathematicians are at odds over whether string theory is a series of abstract puzzles or whether it says anything about the real world!Obviously without testable predictions, it has little to say about the real world, if it speaks to human beings at all’ As the authors reckon that, the idea that beauty, especially beautiful mathematical models can point to scientific truth served Einstein well but sadly for science, it may have misled the later, our generation of theoretical physicists! The authors conclude that ‘the string theory is a mere conjecture and unworthy of being called a theory at all!Other options to the solution of the problem to the workings of nature, the solution to the theory of everything, like one highlighted by the new scientist known as the ‘loop quantum gravity’ (whatever that is) fair no better, as the New scientist admits. That is modern science for you. What a great comedown for science! Or has science ever been high on the pedestal? I doubt! It’s still the old fruitless human snooping into the God’s business.Do you still believe in science as the path to the truth? I conclude and agree with Naseem Taleb the skeptical empiricist and a Riskmanager who admires science and who observes that science is good but individual scientists are dangerous. Indeed the herding and group think is not a reserve for the lowly and we men and women on the streets, The NewScientist mentions that groupthink is also quite common even among scientists.Do you still believe that science is still faithful to its creed of remaining scientific?

 63.

Home Security Camera SystemA home security camera system at home is nowadays essential for the security and safety for the family and property, but it needs to be selected and set-up right- you may not get a second chance. There are a number of factors to consider before you get to the actual installation of the system:Purpose of the Home Security Camera SystemThis seems obvious, but do give it a thought. Is the purpose only to record an actual break-in, or do you want to use it for remote viewing of what is going on in and around your house. A little further down we will look at locating the cameras, but have this in mind when you do.Select SystemNext we shall select the system to use. There are two fundamentally different ways to go – an IP system or High Definition Analogue system.A short comparison will show that An IP camera system can provide a much higher picture resolution and it can also provide more features compared to the Analogue High Definition systems. While an IP system can provide more features – that are more geared towards the professional market, there is a selection of analogue systems that are more than adequate for a Home Security Camera System. We do not need to increase the cost or complicate the system setup just to get features and performance that we do not need. The IP Camera system can provide multi-megapixel resolution, while the analogue systems, for now, can provide up to two megapixel only. However within the relatively confined area of a home, the performance of the High Definition analogue system is more than sufficient o get the picture quality that you need. There is also a number of IP-camera kits, that are meant for DIY installations. The features and picture quality is similar to that of the High Definition analogue systems, but the cost is considerably higher. They, however. Provide for the possibility to connect wireless cameras over the in-house WiFi network. There are essentially two High Definition analogue systems to choose from for a Home Security Camera System, AHD (Analogue High Definition) and HD-TVI (High Definition Transport Video Interface). There is a small difference in cost in favour of AHD, but also a small difference in performance in favour if TVI. I believe both are equally well suited for home system.Location of cameras, camera viewAll analogue systems can be installed using a single cable from the DVR to the camera using a coaxial cable with a power cable attached (Coax+DC, Siamese cable). In an IP-kit system the camera may be cabled directly to the NVR using a single Cat5e/Cat6 cable, or wireless over the WiFi network and only connected to a wall socket. The DVR/NVR shall be located where it is not easy to find. The last thing we want is the burglar to take it away! The location of the cameras may be restricted to what can be achieved with the cabling, but should at least cover:The gate (front and back) – this camera should be not too obvious for the intruder, we want to catch him unaware. Once he notices a camera he will find ways to avoid it.Main door, preferably on the outside
64. Any windows accessible from the ground.
65. Staircase – this can be a bit sensitive, so select that with some care. Now, if you want to use the security camera system for monitoring what is going on in and around the house you can add more cameras to do that. BUT, bear in mind that what you view or record may be watched by others. For example you set up your phone to view all cameras and put in an auto log-in. If you lose the camera…Setting up and recordingOnce installed, the system needs to be set-up for recording. The actual procedure depends very much on the system chosen but there are a few common steps.Set up the system to retain the recording for, say one month. The duration must be long enough for you to be able to recover the recording even after a long break.Set up recording to be done ‘on motion’ only. This takes some doing and re-doing before you get it right, but this saves hard disk space and your recording will be retained longer. There could be locations you want to view, but not necessarily record – in that case don’t record.Remote viewing, passwordYou will want to be able to view your system remotely. In order to do so you need to set up your router to accept incoming traffic, this is normally referred to as port forwarding. If you have a dynamic IP address (like most of us) you also need to get a web address. Read the manual, most manufacturers provide a web address through their system. You can also get a sub-domain from an independent DNS provider. The system comes with a default user name (typically ‘admin’) and a default password (typically ’123456′). The first thing you should do after installing is changing these/ Both the user name (if you can) but definitely the password. Change the password once in a while. If you follow the steps outlined above, you will be able to have your Home Security Camera System up and running – protecting your property and family.

 124.

Ever since the introduction of the internet, the loan market has changed dramatically. The internet has meant the lenders are able to offer quick decisions and same day payouts, something that was simply not possible before. It has also meant the lenders are able to contact applicants and existing customers with ease via things like text, email and instant web-chat facilities.Nowadays, there is a loan product available to suit almost any financial situation. Whether you’re looking for; £10,000 to buy a new car, £5,000 with bad credit or £200 to tide you over until your payday- there is a lender somewhere that should be able to help. Here are just some of the options available:Secured Loans
125. Secured loan lenders will be able to offer anything from £2000 to £50,000 (with some offering up to £100,000) to homeowners. The reason secured loan lenders require the applicant to be a homeowner is because they will secure the loan against the borrower’s property. This means that if the borrower was unable to pay and the loan falls into default; the lender has the right to repossess or put a charge on the property.Personal Loans
126. Sometimes referred to as unsecured loans; these loans work on the basis that the lender has not got the security of an asset such as a property to fall back on. This means that if the loan was to fall into default the lender is unable to repossess the property, although if taken to court they may be able to get a charge put on a property of the borrower is a homeowner. The regular personal loan provider will offer between £1,000 and £15,000 depending on the applicant’s credit history.Peer-to-Peer Lending
127. Often referred to as social lending, this is a relatively modern approach to finance. It uses the idea of a borrower getting financed by investors who are funding all the lending. The investor then makes a margin depending on the interest rate the borrower is being charged. The “lender” in this situation is more like a middleman, taking a percentage of the interest charged.Guarantor Loans
128. A guarantor loan is a personal (or unsecured) loan that is backed by a friend or family member with good credit. This means that in a lot of cases the main applicant of a guarantor loan can have a certain degree of poor credit and still be approved for the finance. This works because the lender has a “plan B” and if the applicant is unable to pay they have the right to ask the guarantor for the payment instead. The guarantor is legally obliged to make the payment if the applicant can’t.Logbook Loans
129. Logbook loans are secured against a car. They work in a similar way to secured loans. The amount available to the borrower is relative to the value of the car the loan is being secured on. If the loan goes unpaid the lender will repossess the car.Payday Loans
130. Payday loans are short term loans, usually lasting no longer than a month. The idea of them is to free up the money you need now and pay it back as soon as you receive your wages. An example of when you would take out a payday loan would be if you are struggling to pay an important bill mid-month, perhaps Council Tax, you know you could pay it after payday but they are demanding the payment now. In this situation you could borrow the required funds, say £100, and then 2 weeks later after being paid you would repay the £100 + £25 interest.I hope you found this rundown of available loans helpful.

 170.

Canadian business owners and financial managers often ask about assessing the different alternatives to their overall business financing strategy. Receivable financing – factoring can be one of the cornerstones of a creative alternative financial solution for their business. We sometimes hesitate to use the word ‘alternative ‘because quite frankly this method of financing is becoming as mainstream as things can get!Canadian business can be financed in one of four different ways. You need to be able to asses the methods utilized in those four categories and which one, or ones, makes sense for your firm.Business is financed of course by your own shareholder equity. Equity is expensive because when you give it up, or sell ownership in your business your overall position becomes diluted and your return on investment diminishes. The three other methods of financing, in lieu of equity of ownership relinquishing are:Debt
171. Grants
172. Asset FinancingDebt of course comes in the form of good debt and bad debt – we would, as an example categorize a commercial mortgage as good debt – a cash flow working capital loan might be another example. However, the reality is that most business owners recognize the dangers of debt and how that increased leverage can be a double edged sword.Clients are always asking us about ‘governments grants and loans.’ In our opinion there are only two respectable grant/loan programs in Canada – the SR&ED program, and the CSBF program – the former is a non repayable grant, the latter is simply a great government loan for financing equipment and leaseholds. So that brings us to # 4- Asset financing. Depending on the type of business and industry you are in your asses include inventory, land, equipment, and receivables.A very strong case can be made that #4 should in fact be #1 when it comes to working capital and cash flow financing. Simply speaking your assets need to be monetized in the best manner in which to bring you liquidity.Receivable financing – factoring is in fact the quickest and most efficient manner to bring immediate cash flow to your business. Why is that the case – simply because it involves no debt coming on our balance sheet, no payments are made as in a loan type scenario, cash flow is immediate, and the reality is, that if you have negotiated the right factor facility then you are in control of your overall cash flow requirements? The benefits of a receivable financing factor facility are very clear once you understand the process. Generally a factor facility, aka an invoice discounting or receivable financing facility can be negotiated in a couple of weeks from start to finish. To the extent that your business is growing you essentially have successfully completed a financing that gives you unlimited cash flow. We say unlimited, because if your sales and receivables grow your cash flow and working capital grow in lock step to that growth!Cash flow and working capital from a factor facility can be used to increase inventory, take on more purchase orders and contracts, and, in general meet working capital guidelines. The overall process for a receivable financing – factoring facility is simple. You sell some or all of your invoices to your factor partner firm. You receive generally 90% of that invoice amount that same day as cash in your bank account. When your customer pays the factor firm keeps a ‘discount fee ‘based on the total time it took your customer to pay.Discount fees, or as clients prefer to call them, ‘factoring rates ‘vary in Canada. Factors (excuse the pun) that affect your fee are the size of facility, who you deal with, the method in which your facility operates, and the overall quality of your customer base.Speak to a credible, trusted, an experienced business financing advisor – Find out today why the 4th method of financing your business might just be the best!
