32.

Invivo has been handed a prestigious global accolade for top tipple ‘Invivo X, SJP Sauvignon Blanc’ by Wine Spectator, the world’s leading authority on wine, who awarded Invivo X, SJP Sauvignon Blanc 2022 #29 out of their Top 100 wines of the world in 2023. The full list can be found online at top100.wine spectator.com.

  33.

  34.
Through blind tastings performed by Wine Spectator’s editors, these 100 bottles were chosen from over 9,200 wines. Selections are based on four criteria: quality (based on score), value (based on price), availability (based on the number of cases made or imported into the U.S.) and the “X-factor”—a compelling story and excitement behind the wine. Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list has been an annual highlight since 1988, showcasing the best of wine from the past year, wineries worth watching in the future, and the producers and wines that Wine Spectator’s editors are most enthusiastic about.

  35.

  36.
Wine Spectator has awarded Invivo X, SJP Sauvignon Blanc four 90+ point scores, four years in a row, and was included its Wine Spectator’s Top 100 for its first 2019 vintage in 2020. Sarah Jessica Parker and Invivo recently headlined the Wine Spectator New York Wine Experience, presenting their award-winning blend to some of the world’s most influential wine folk, and headlining a seminar as a “Wine Star”.

  37.

  38.
Recently speaking to Wine Spectator, SJP described her journey with Invivo as “extraordinary, enlightening, surprising, and rewarding” and her hands on involvement from the brand’s inception: “When I spoke to Tim and Rob [Invivo Cofounders], I told them I was in, as long as I could be involved every step of the way. When it’s something that I can fully immerse myself into and learn from, that’s when it’s really exciting.”

  56.

Music industry icon Sir Rod Stewart has announced his next release: Wolfie’s Whisky, a blended Scotch whisky that embodies his reputation as ‘the Cockney Scotsman’ and pays tribute to his Scottish heritage and cheeky chappie image.

  57.
Designed to reflect Rod’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage with subtle nods to Americana, Wolfie’s was inspired by the legendary musician’s early hell raising days with the Faces.

  58.
“Wolfie’s is a rascal of a thing and with just a sip the whisky takes you back to the good old days. Fine-tuned and perfectly balanced, Wolfie’s is a delight both over ice and mixed into a favourite cocktail,” says Rod.

  59.
“It’s a fine tipple, whether you’re partying with friends, celebrating a Celtic win or reminiscing with family. For me, Wolfie’s depicts the carefree behaviour of my more mischievous days, and the excitement of what life still has to offer – let the good times roll!”

  60.
Wolfie’s Blended Scotch Whisky (40% ABV) is wonderfully balanced with flavours of warming cinnamon, fresh vanilla, and baked apple. The whisky has a delicate taste of sweet peat and pears in syrup before finishing with candied citrus peels and a gentle oak spice.

  61.
With its unique blend of rock ‘n’ roll roots, American and Scottish heritage, Wolfie’s is bringing something new to the Scotch whisky market. Distilled on the banks of Loch Lomond by an expert team with decades of whisky-making know-how and an all-Scottish team behind the brand, Wolfie’s truly has Scotland at its heart.

  62.
Referencing the opening track from Rod’s 1991 album Vagabond Heart, the lyrics ‘Rhythm of My Heart’ are emblazoned on the base of the bottle. Rod’s recording of the song was a nod to his own Scottish heritage having adapted the melody from the traditional folk song, Loch Lomond.

  63.
Michael Barry Managing Director of Barry & Fitzwilliam has been a lifelong fan of Rod Stewart’s music is ecstatic to have concluded a deal with Rod and his team to become the Irish distributor of Wolfie’s. The deal was agreed recently in Cork while Rod was in town for two sold out concerts at the Marquee.

  135.
The O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co. (OSDC), a family-owned distillery located in Minneapolis, MN, announced distribution of Keeper’s Heart Irish American Whiskey into Ireland, the first availability for the award-winning liquid outside the United States.

  136.

  137.
Created by whiskey icon Brian Nation, formerly Master Distiller for some of the most well know Irish whiskeys including Jameson, Redbreast, and Midleton, Keeper’s Heart is a new style of whiskey, bringing together the best of Irish and American whiskey-making traditions. After leaving Ireland in 2021 to move to America and craft Keeper’s Heart with the O’Shaughnessy family, Brian is bringing the unique blend of Irish and American whiskeys home.

  138.

  139.
Keeper’s Heart Irish + American Whiskey launched in 2021, and quickly expanded its portfolio with Keeper’s Heart Irish + Bourbon. With its innovative liquid and expert craftsmanship, Irish + American became the most awarded new whiskey brand in 2022, including International Wine and Spirits Challenge Platinum, Ultimate Spirits Challenge 94, Critics Challenge International Platinum and Proof Award Double Gold honours.

  140.
Speaking about the foundation of O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co., Co-Founder Patrick O’Shaughnessy said:

  141.
“What started as an O’Shaughnessy family reunion became the birthplace of Keeper’s Heart, a celebration of our family’s Irish-American heritage,”

  142.

  143.
“Our great great grandfather came to the United States from Ireland, and our large extended family has stayed close to our Irish roots. Keeper’s Heart was created to celebrate that. We are extremely proud of the Keeper’s Heart team and the reception the brand has received since we launched. It has made it possible to continue to grow Keeper’s Heart and evolve the liquid offerings, and now, as we begin international distribution, Ireland was at the top of the list. We hope the Irish people enjoy what we have created as much as the American drinkers have.”

  144.

  145.
Liquid development is led by Master Distiller Brian Nation, who has more than 22 years of experience working on some of the most renowned and high-quality Irish whiskeys in the world. Born and raised in Cork City, Ireland, he moved to Minnesota following a meeting with the O’Shaughnessy family to embark on a new adventure and create a new style of whiskey, marrying the best of Irish and American whiskey-making traditions.

  146.
“I never thought I’d leave Ireland until I met the O’Shaughnessy family and heard what they wanted to create,” said Master Distiller Brian Nation.

  147.

  148.
“Their vision was inspiring, and together, along with American Whiskey visionary David Perkins, we’ve created an innovative liquid portfolio and a brand that celebrates family, and heritage. Keeper’s Heart is my passion project, and I’m proud to return home to share with my friends and family what we’ve been up to across the pond.”

  149.

  150.
Nation collaborated on the blending of Keeper’s Heart with Liquid Collaborator and Advisor, David Perkins, founder of High West Distillery. The pair aims to combine the best of Irish and American whiskey traditions, by blending of Irish Triple Pot distilled whiskey, Irish Grain Whiskey with American Rye and Bourbon.

  151.

  152.
“From the beginning, our goal has been to put Keeper’s Heart on the world whiskey map, and today we begin expanding into international markets, sharing our story, our proud Irish-American heritage, and our award-winning liquid portfolio with the global whiskey community. Beginning that journey in Ireland is the perfect first step,” said Mike Duggan, CEO of O’Shaughnessy Distilling Co.

  153.

  154.
Keepers Heart will be available exclusively from Barry & Fitzwilliam from Mid-March.

  176.
Barry & Fitzwilliam Irelands largest Independent Premium Drinks Distributor are delighted to announce Kylie Minogue’s 0% alcohol Sparkling Rosé is now available in Ireland.

  177.
“I am over the moon with the incredible response to this latest addition to the Kylie Minogue Wines portfolio. Out first zero-alcohol wine and a truly sparkling example what can be achieved in this area! This really is a tribute to my amazing Kylie Minogue Wines team – ever since we launched, we have focused on delivering many varietals of innovative and high-quality wine, for every occasion and person, worldwide. Our Zero Percent Sparkling Rosé is no exception, and I am beyond thrilled it has been received so well. Thank you for the continued support, and cheers to the new year, Lovers!” Kylie Minogue

  178.
In December 2022 Kylie Minogue Wines launched its first 0% alcohol Sparkling Rosé in the UK, with flavours and acidic balance mirroring that found in wine. Through a blend of premium Organic European grapes and green tea selected from the Liu-Da Mountains of Yunnan province in China, Kylie Minogue Wines’ 0% alcohol production process provides maximum development of wine attributes without generating any alcohol. The careful selection of ingredients is reflected in the extraction process of the tea, with one bud and two leaves individually hand-plucked at a time. Brewed into a strong infusion and added to the grape ferment, the result is an additional mouthfeel and finish, rounded off with dried tannins to present a complex and finely balanced Sparkling Rosé, minus the alcohol.

  179.
Kylie Minogue Wines’ Alcohol-Free Sparkling Rosé is just 22 calories per 100ml which is around 80 less calories per glass than a standard glass of Prosecco, making it a delicious, lighter alternative. (Source: DrinkAware.co.uk 125ml glass of 12% ABV Prosecco contains around 108 calories).

  197.
Obolon went down in history to become the first private company in independent Ukraine by receiving a privatization certificate from the State Property Fund of Ukraine № 1.

  198.
The construction of the plant was aimed to provide the country high-quality beer that would meet high world standards. Czech experts who are world-famous masters of brewing were invited as leading experts. They determined the place of construction for the new brewery. The main criteria was the source of artesian water which is the main component that determines the taste of beer. The historical place of the Kyiv city which is located on the right bank of the Dnipro River.

  199.
Today the brewery is one of the largest in Europe and the largest domestic beverage company in Ukraine.

  200.
The War started by the Russian Federation forced the company to pivot and find an opportunity to continue its activities. Despite the extremely difficult work conditions in wartime Obolon tries to support its employees by providing them jobs and salaries, as well as supporting the military who courageously defend Ukraine and European countries at the cost of their own lives. Today the sources of artesian water that are available to Obolon are used for water production including free distribution to the military and people in war-torn regions of Ukraine.

  201.
Obolon corporate enterprises have already provided more than 3 million litres of water free of charge. Additional funds are needed to be able to continue to provide this assistance. With this aim Obolon is launching a project that will allow people around the world to support Obolon in its noble mission. To provide an additional 4 million litres of water, Obolon aims to raise 1 million dollars through 1 bottle of beer. The last bottle of Obolon beer brewed in a peaceful Ukraine. The ‘Last Obolon’ will be auction at a Christie’s auction in NYC bidding starts at $1 million.

  202.
Obolon was the first privatized brewery in a post-soviet Ukraine. It became the nation’s household beer, synonymous with freedom and independence. Two things that were taken away from all Ukrainians, the night their country was invaded.

  203.
The Last Obolon brewed in peacetime holds an unmeasurable symbolic value, especially to those who have a personal connection to Ukraine. But more than that, it offers a way to donate money, help millions of Ukrainians in need of water and to keep this unrighteous war into the spotlight. Many of the world’s wealthiest people, celebrities, companies and philanthropists have donated amounts far exceeding $1M to Ukraine and are still looking for ways to keep supporting the stricken nation. The Last Obolon helps them do just that.

  204.
Barry & Fitzwilliam are very proud to announce their partnership with Obolon. The first consignment has now landed, Barry & Fitzwilliam will be donating to Obolons noble mission for every bottle sold in Ireland. Managing Director Michael Barry has said ‘We are very proud to be associated with this venture and we look forward to a successful long-term relationship with Obolon. We are delighted to be able to help the Ukrainian community indirectly.’

  220.

From Blue Nun to Brewdog Punk AF

  221.
This month, Maev Martin talks to one of the best-known names in the Irish drinks industry, Barry & Fitzwilliam managing director MICHAEL BARRY.

  222.
Michael Barry has led Barry & Fitzwilliam for the last four decades, growing the business to become Ireland’s largest independent premium alcoholic drinks distributor. The company carries over 100 agency brands and employs approximately 60 people at its extensive warehousing and administration facilities, which are based in Cork and Dublin. This year, the iconic Irish drinks company celebrated 40 years of trading, and it marked this major milestone with a celebratory event for staff in Isaacs Restaurant in Cork. “Our customers will be receiving something special very soon,” says Michael.

  223.
Barry & Fitzwilliam has been at the forefront of the latest trends driving the market over the past four decades, including the gin revolution, the continued rise of craft beer and cider, the Irish whiskey renaissance, and the growth of no and low alcohol products. How does he keep abreast of, and anticipate, these trends? “I was once told that my job was not managing director of the company, but to be the visionary and strategy director, so I suppose I take that seriously,” he says. “Change is the only constant and we are always looking for new trends. Our track record speaks for itself in that regard.”

  224.
Cocktail culture
225. There can be no doubt that the Irish drinks industry is seeing a new type of consumer emerge post-pandemic – one that is consuming less, is even more focused on premium products, and is eager to purchase ‘better for you’ food and drink. Last year, sales of cocktails and long drinks in Ireland grew by 60%, while hard seltzers were up by 46% and flavoured alcoholic beverages rose by 27%. The majority of sales were imported RTD products, but a number of local producers have entered the market, with sales of Irish RTD brands up by 7.4% between 2020 and 2021. Another strong trend in Ireland is the growing popularity of no- and low-alcohol products. While beer and cider brands lead this trend, the no- and low-spirits category has started to emerge, with sales up by 313% last year, albeit from a low base.

  226.
According to Michael, Barry & Fitzwilliam’s sales of cocktail ingredients such as Tia Maria, Cointreau, Passoa and Bols liqueurs are examples of the continued move towards premiumisation. “We saw a huge increase in cocktail culture in retail during Covid-19, which has continued, and we now see that transitioning into the hospitality sector,” he says. “We are also witnessing a big increase in demand for non-alcoholic wines such as McGuigan Zero, as well as Brewdog Punk AF, and Strykk non-alcoholic spirits.”

  227.
We heard a lot of hype in recent years about how tequila was going to be the next big thing in the global drinks industry, following the explosion of gin’s popularity worldwide. It hasn’t materialised yet, but could it be the in vogue category for 2023 and beyond? “I believe that cocktail culture has a long way to go yet,” he says. “Tequila is primarily as a cocktail ingredient. There has been a lot of talk about premium rum, and we can see the beginnings of this with Mount Gay Black Barrell sales.”

  228.
When it comes to the brands in their portfolio that best represent the latest trends, Michael says that it has to be the success of celebrity brands, such as the wine ranges from Graham Norton, Kylie Minogue and Sarah Jessica Parker. “In addition, Brewdog Beers are performing extremely well at the moment, and I expect that to continue,” he says. “I also expect that 2023 will be the year when the White Claw hard seltzer brand really takes off in Ireland.”

  229.
Inflation & MUP

  230.
Like every other retail business, Barry & Fitzwilliam has to contend with the ongoing inflation crisis and is working hard to mitigate any negative impact that it could have on its relationships with its brands and with retailers.
231. According to Michael, the biggest issue for Barry & Fitzwilliam has been the cost increase associated with dry goods such as bottles, cartons and labels, together with the increased costs of shipping and distribution.

  232.
Minimum unit pricing was implemented on 4 January 2022. Based on NielsenIQ data for the 12 weeks ending 11 September 2022, price inflation is up by 9% for defined grocery food, and by 10% for beer, wines and spirits. Many consumers are cutting back in order to manage costs, and alcohol is a discretionary category for most. In NielsenIQ’s latest local consumer survey, 66% of consumers responded that they were cutting back on alcohol purchases as a direct result of MUP, which is reflected in the 10% volume decline that NielsenIQ saw in the 12 weeks to 11 September.

  233.
However, the decline in sales is not entirely due to MUP. Volume sales for beer, wines and spirits in the UK, where MUP has not been implemented, are also experiencing a decline of 6% in volume (litres) in the latest 12 weeks to 10 September 2022.

  234.
However, Michael Barry isn’t reporting any negative impact on the sale of brands that he distributes as a result of MUP. “In fact, MUP has been a positive for us, as wines were being sold under cost prior to its introduction and those wines now retail for approximately €8.00 per bottle, so that has benefitted branded wines as they saw no increase as a consequence of MUP,” says Michael. “I feel as well that it has helped our craft and world beer range as it has narrowed the gap between them and the mainstream beers.”

  235.
Looking back to when Barry & Fitzwilliam was first established 40 years ago, Michael says that the Irish alcoholic drinks industry was primarily a spirit market with wines like Blue Nun, Black Tower, Le Piat d’Or and Blossom Hill being the main brands, along with Harveys Bristol Cream Sherry and Sandeman Port. A lot has changed since then and Michael cites a number of highlights for Barry & Fitzwilliam over the past four decades.

  236.
“The takeover of Maxxium Ireland in 2003 was the big highlight and our success in building the Corona brand has to be number two, together with developing McGuigan into the number one Australian wine brand and developing Villa Maria into the number one New Zealand wine brand,” he says.

  237.
Barry & Fitzwilliam has always managed an extensive portfolio of brands and, of course, maintaining good relationships with individual brands has been a crucial part of its maintenance and expansion strategy. “In my opinion, business is about people,” he says, ‘whether it is our relationship with our customers or our relationship with our brand owners – and it pays to be a good listener!

  253.

In High Spirits

  254.
Michael Barry, founder and managing director of Barry & Fitzwilliam spoke to Fionnuala Carolan about the highs and lows of running an independent drinks distributor as the company celebrates its 40th birthday.

  255.

  256.
For the last four decades Michael Barry has been at the helm of Barry & Fitzwilliam and in that time, he has
257. built the business into Ireland’s largest independent drinks distributor. It now carries
258. more than 120 of the top wine, spirits and beer brands including McGuigan, Villa Maria, Michel Lynch, Remy Martin, BrewDog and White Claw. Just this month, Barry & Fitzwilliam was also appointed as the
259. distributor for legendary master distiller Brian Nation’s new Irish American whiskey range,
260. Keeper’s Heart. There are 60 employees between its warehousing and administration facilities in Ballycurreen, Co. Cork and its sales office in Sandyford, Co. Dublin.

  261.
According to Barry, the company has always
262. tried to stay ahead of the market by watching trends closely. “We have managed to survive and prosper over the 40 years by keeping a close eye on international trends and embracing them.”

  263.
Starting out Barry joined Murphy’s Brewery in Cork in 1978 as a wines and spirits administration manager despite having just trained as an accountant, yet his accountancy background has definitely paid dividends throughout his career. He credits Bob Kennefick, the sales director of Murphy’s Brewery at the time, for taking him under his wing and instilling in him a passion and drive to prosper in the drinks industry. However, the brewery went into receivership in July 1982. Unable to see a future for the wine and spirit division, Barry decided to take the bold step of setting up his own business. Within three months of leaving Murphy’s, he launched Barry’s Wines & Spirits in a 2,500 square foot warehouse in Alfred Street in Cork. Three other employees from Murphy’s joined him and two of them only retired last year.

  264.
“When the brewery went into receivership I presumed that Heineken would buy the brewery eventually and that they wouldn’t have any interest in wines and spirits and that was the logic behind that. It was very much about serving the Muster area initially,” he recalls.

  265.
So how did he have the means to launch a company at such a young age? “I found a very friendly bank manager and I wouldn’t find him today!” he jokes. You had a lot of confidence, ShelfLife suggested. “Blind enthusiasm and lots of passion that was the foundation stone of the company,” he explains. “If I’d known how hard it was going to be at the beginning I might never have started it. We are all more cautious as we get older and we see roadblocks. When you are young, you take chances. And sometimes they pay off.”

  266.
Barry’s partner is Chris Murphy, formerly of Fitzwilliam Wines & Spirits, named so because the business was started in Fitzwilliam Square in Dublin where Murphy held the then fashionable Pernod agency. They merged the two companies in 1989 becoming Barry & Fitzwilliam. Although they called themselves a wine and spirits distributor, wine was only a small fraction of the business at the beginning, Barry explained.

  267.
“Well the joke of the whole thing is that we called ourselves a wine and spirits company in 1982, except that 90% of our sales were spirits,” he laughs. “Now 50% would be wine, 30% spirits and 20% would be beers and RTD such as White Claw. Wine has only become popular in the last 25 years in Ireland. The first ten years when we were on the road selling, it was mainly Pedrotti, Black Tower, Blue Nun and maybe Blossom Hill quarter bottles. No one had heard of New Zealand or Australian wines and now McGuigan’s from Australia and Villa Maria from New Zealand are the number one wines so that’s how dramatically things have changed over the years.”

  268.
Arrival of Corona The company really made its mark in 1990 when it took on the agency for the Corona Extra brand in Ireland and promoted it heavily turning it into one of Ireland’s leading bottled beer brands and the company subsequently went on to launch Corona Light in 2012. “It was the first long neck beer to be launched in
269. Ireland and we had it for 25 years until January 2015,” he explains.

  270.
In 2015 they lost Corona to C&C Gleeson due to Corona’s new parent company Ab Inbev having a contractual agreement to use C&C for Irish distribution. It was a blow to the company after all they had done for the brand but Barry is pragmatic about the loss. “Look, life is a series of ups and downs and when you have more ups than downs, you are a winner.”

  271.
A family affair
272. From Midleton originally, Barry now lives in Douglas with his wife Kathleen who is the operational director of the company. Their three children all work in the business also. “Our daughter Kate is the brand manager. Our son Mike who happens to have Down syndrome, is an administrator. He scans delivery dockets into the computer –he loves routine. We also call him the company therapist as you can’t be in bad form around that guy. And then the youngest is Rory and he combines two roles – sales executive but he is also in charge of our purchasing. It’s wonderful having your whole family together. Not many families could do it but it works for us,” he states.

  273.
Throughout 40 years he has experienced a lot of ups and downs in the trade but he remembers the currency crisis in the early 90s as being a particularly tough time in business. “In 1992/93 the banks were charging 21% interest, so if you were a borrower you were paying almost 20% on your mortgage. Trying to get paid was very difficult at the time,” he recalls. However he dismisses that hiccup as just financial woes. An awful tragedy befell the company in 2003 which put everything else into perspective.

  274.
Change is constant Ironically at the end of that annus horribilis, the company signed a huge deal when they took over Maxxium to market all its brands in Ireland gaining big brands like Absolut vodka, Famous Grouse, Remy Cointreau and Jim Beam.

  275.
“We were Barry Fitzwilliam Maxxium for a few years. We doubled Maxxium’s business in Ireland and it gave us a great reputation internationally and got us more brands over those years.” The company reverted back to Barry & Fitzwilliam in 2008 because the companies who owned Maxxium decided to go their separate ways.

  276.
Barry says that in the drinks industry you have to be ready for the next big thing and adapt quickly and over the years the company did not shy away from taking a punt on a new product. In recent years they’ve enjoyed much success with celebrity endorsed wines including Graham Norton, Kylie, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gary Barlow and Gordon Ramsey. Barry says that they are hugely popular and the celebrities are more involved in the process than you might think. “They all have been involved in the blending process for the wine so they are not just putting their name to it.”

  277.
The non-alcoholic market is one they have also had to embrace and they hold one of the most popular non-alcoholic brands, Brewdog Punk Zero. They also have a non-alcoholic wine offering with McGuigan Zero which Barry says has taken off. “A lot of the hospitality accounts are waking up to the fact that they do require a non-alcoholic offering
278. so we see that growing. I think we have the most fashionable product on the market at the moment with White Claw and we are always on the lookout for new things,” he says.

  279.
So what does the man who knows more about drinks than most, choose as his favourite tipple? “Between wine, beer and spirits, it would have to be wine,” he says. “It can be red or white depending on what I am eating. Sometimes I’m in the mood for a sauvignon and sometimes I feel like chardonnay. People associate New Zealand with great sauvignon blanc but I’m just back from New Zealand and for most of the time I was there, I was drinking chardonnay. My point is don’t underestimate the quality of New Zealand chardonnay.” Well you’ve heard it from the horse’s mouth. Chardonnay is the one to watch.

  280.
Covid
281. The company not only trades with all of the multiples and independent off licences but also a large number of accounts in the hospitality sector. In 2019, 40% of the business was hospitality and that was gone overnight when Covid hit. Despite this the company managed to maintain the same turnover in 2020 as the previous year due to the increase of off-trade sales in the retail sector.

  282.
“A lot of the cocktail brands grew dramatically during 2020 and we’ve maintained most of that. The likes of Tia Maria, Cointrea, Bols Liquers and the one product that went ballistic altogether was Passoa – which is a passion fruit liqueur and the main ingredient for a Pornstar Martini.”

  283.
He says that hospitality is back to about 80% of what it was in 2019 but turnover has risen by 20% since then so it evens out. He’s inclined to think that there is a bit of pain to come for hospitality in the coming years though.

  284.
“I think cash and carries are going to suffer because of the cost of fuel, getting staff and the Ukrainian war which is all going to have a negative effect on business. I don’t think that tourism in Ireland will bounce back for 4/5 years so I think retail will be fine but hospitality will find it tough for a while,” he says.

  285.
Speaking of Ukraine, one of the most high profile moves of late is the introduction of Ukraine’s national beer brand Obalon to their portfolio. Irishman Dave McCarthy is a drinks consultant for Obalon and he introduced the brand to Barry & Fitzwilliam. “Dave McCarty approached me and we are all for it but logistically it has been a struggle to get the stock in but it will be on the shelves before
286. Christmas. The brewery is still working in Kiev and it’s one of the largest breweries in the whole of Europe. We will be donating money from every case we sell to the Irish Red Cross.”

  287.
Future
288. So with the 40th celebrations well under way, he says he still has to pinch himself when he thinks about the milestone. “It puts shivers up my spine. When I opened Barry’s Wines & Spirits in 1982 I had the ambition to be Ireland’s leading independent drinks company and that is what we have become. We were supposed to have had celebrations in October at our sales conference but I got Covid,” he explains. “We’ve kicked everything out until November. I don’t care how many are there, it’s going ahead. I can’t wait any longer!

  289.
Barry believes that the company is in good shape and that the future is very bright for Barry & Fitzwilliam. “We have a great portfolio and a great team, brand owners, and great relationships with them. So my sole ambition now is to celebrate fifty years in business in 2032!” Congratulations to the team at Barry & Fitzwilliam on their 40th birthday from all at ShelfLife.

  305.

The beer that launched the beer revolution was Punk IPA. After 15 years, the flagship beer for BrewDog is now also available in a gluten-free version, demonstrating that wonderful beer is accessible to everybody. With the addition of new world hops, this pale, golden classic has been transformed into an explosion of flavour. Before a sharp, bitter end, there are bursts of caramel and tropical fruit, including a riot of grapefruit, pineapple, and lychee.

  306.
Punk IPA GF intends to take advantage of the growing market of customers who are switching to a gluten-free diet and desire to taste the crisp flavour of craft beer without feeling bloated and an ABV OF 5.4%.

  307.
Lauren Carrol, director of brand & marketing at BrewDog, said: “We believe in great beer for everyone – regardless of intolerances – so we always look for ways to continue revolutionising the craft beer industry. The new gluten-free version of our headliner Punk IPA will allow more people to enjoy the tropical flavours without the risk of dietary complications.”

  308.
Punk IPA GF pours a creamy orange colour with a faint haze that is finished with off-white foam with little bubbles, excellent retention, and especially lovely lacing. From the nose, it is very easy to see the hopping depths ahead. In addition to more tropical flavours like mango and lychee, there are lots of sweet oranges, fresh, pithy grapefruit, and oranges and limes. While the majority of its hop flavour initially lands with a citrus and lemony-grapefruit focus, it gradually diversifies to include a wide range of other fruits and herbal flavours. As we normally enjoy from GF IPA, the malt character remains understated and unobtrusive while providing just enough support for the hops.

  309.
This is exceptionally drinkable with a slim body, which allows one to concentrate on the richness of the hop flavour. This beer is a delight to drink, especially considering how much hops are there.

  310.
Suitable for vegans.
