162.
163.
164.
The Fly Beyond pilot initiative funded by the Wawa Foundation expanded fresh produce partnerships at 10 additional schools. The pilot program also transformed student-focused weekend snack packs into a grocery tote filled with meal items for the entire family.

165.
166.
167.
168.
One parent was brought to tears when she picked up her child at an Orange County elementary school and saw the food he was bringing home. “We’ve been having a difficult time making the grocery budget cover all of our needs with the rising costs of food,” she explained. “This gives me a sense of relief.”

177.
178.
179.
180.
Fresh Markets happen monthly at local schools. Student leaders, school staff and PTA volunteers help pre-pack produce bags or set up a pop-up market where students and families can select fresh fruits and vegetables to take home for free. The markets often introduce new produce to students.

181.
182.
183.
184.
“When the fresh produce arrived, it was awesome to see the kids work together to get the items bagged,” explains a school liaison in Brevard County. “There was different produce that some students had never seen before. Kids started sharing favorite recipes and how their family prepares the different vegetables.”

185.
186.
187.
188.
At another distribution, dragon fruit, a tropical fruit high in fiber and antioxidants, was a hit. “I’ve only seen one of these on the internet!” exclaimed a student in Seminole County. “I’m excited to try one!”

306.
“We didn’t have anything like this when I was in school,” says Quinn Byrd, site director at Midway Safe Harbor in Sanford, where 135 students receive an after-school meal each weekday. “The kids get a hot meal every day here. Everybody jumps in and does what needs to be done to make sure the kids get their food.”

307.
308.
309.
310.
Kids Cafe is a partnership. Second Harvest Food Bank provides the food, funding and coordinator training for all Kids Cafe sites with support from corporations, foundations and the State of Florida’s Child Care Food Program. Partners at community centers, churches and parks and recreation sites, prepare and serve students meals. Each site also provides a wide range of enrichment and educational activities.

311.
312.
313.
314.
“I really love the chicken,” says Tyson, a boisterous kindergartner. His after-school meal of chicken, collard greens and sweet potatoes energizes him for an afternoon filled with basketball, tutoring and fun with friends.

319.
320.
321.
322.
Like others across Central Florida, many parents are juggling multiple jobs in the Midway community. Second Harvest and Midway Safe Harbor provide stability and relief by working together. Knowing their children have a safe, caring place gives parents peace of mind.

323.
324.
325.
326.
“At the end of the day, if you’re not eating, you’re not learning,” says Quinn, adding, “If you’re not eating, you’re not working. If you’re not eating, you’re not moving.”

327.
328.
329.
330.
Thanks to a caring community, Kids Cafe and other childhood hunger relief programs help ensure kids have access to the healthy, nutritious food they need to learn, grow and thrive.

417.
418.
“Volunteering is my greatest joy,” explains Jeremy. “I like serving my fellow man, especially veterans because I am a disabled veteran.”

419.
420.
421.
422.
His service began as an Eagle Scout and later as an Air Force linguist. Since returning to civilian life, Jeremy has found a supportive community and dedicates his time to ensuring that veterans have access to transportation, medical care, and food.

423.
424.
425.
426.
“I like to help others because I have been helped,” adds Jeremy. As a recipient, supporter, and advocate, Jeremy gladly shares his personal experience with others to reduce the stigma of asking for help.

431.
432.
433.
434.
Jeremy knows that there are a lot of families asking for help this holiday season. 1 in 8 Central Floridians – including working parents, kids, seniors, and veterans – are facing hunger. As he sorts food donations at Second Harvest Food Bank’s warehouse and loads boxes of food into recipients’ cars at a monthly food distribution, he thinks about the people he talks to in the distribution line and how much this food means to them. And how much it means to his family.

439.
440.
441.
442.
“When I take food home to my family, it helps my parents a lot,” says Jeremy. “My dad is always grateful for the meat. I, myself, look forward to the cereal.”

894.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) helped ease the burden of hunger for families this holiday season with their annual food distribution event. The 13th annual holiday food distribution event provided 3,400 families with enough food to provide 156,526 meals over the upcoming winter break.

895.
896.
897.
898.
Volunteers spread out around bus loops and school parking lots at nine different schools across Orange County to help load food into the trunk of each car in line. Each family received a turkey and a fresh produce box filled with cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions. A bag of pantry essentials like peanut butter, tuna, shelf-stable milk, cereal, and red beans and rice helped provide items to build complete meals that families can enjoy together this holiday season.

916.
As a result of inflation, recent hurricanes and ongoing pandemic impacts, one in eight Central Floridians and one in five children are at greater risk of experiencing hunger. As students head home for the two-week winter break, they leave behind homework, exams, and critical school-provided meals, making food even more urgent during the holiday season.

917.
918.
919.
920.
For nearly two hours, cars snaked through school parking lots. Grateful families waved through the windows, smiled, and thanked the volunteers. The teens helping load food into vehicles were proud of their ability to share hope and food with their community. As you’ll see in the video below, a few even sang carols to people in their cars.

Volunteers help prepare the meals at Mercy Kitchen, a production kitchen that opened at the height of the pandemic. 1160.
“Coming out of the pandemic, we were hit with rent going up, house prices going up, and many people, their jobs and their income did not go up to keep up with the inflation,” explains Imam Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida.

1166.
1167.
1168.
“I went to buy a head of lettuce the other day,” Laurie explains. “They wanted $4 for a head of lettuce. I can’t afford that just for a head of lettuce that isn’t going to last maybe one or two meals in our home.”

1169.
1170.
1171.
1172.
Like many families, Laurie’s fixed income has not kept pace with the rising cost of food and other essentials. The shortfall in a family’s budget can force impossible choices between paying for necessary medications or rent and having food on the table.

1173.
1174.
1175.
1176.
“I would never let my grandson go hungry,” says Laurie. “As an adult, I’ve spent days without being able to eat before finding the Neighborhood Center and Second Harvest.”

1177.
1178.
1179.
1180.
She is not alone in feeling the pinch of inflation. This fall, an average of 250 people a day search Second Harvest’s Food Finder for help with food assistance. The online search tool helps locate nearby emergency food pantries and distribution days and times.

1181.
1182.
1183.
1184.
“The need just builds every day to where we’re seeing at least five to six new families every day,” explains Trish Kry, executive director at The Neighborhood Center of South Lake.

1185.
1186.
1187.
1188.
Families trying to stretch a limited budget often remove fresh, healthy food items from their shopping carts and replace them with calorie-dense and nutritionally-deficient food. Six boxes of macaroni and cheese fill more bellies than a container of blueberries. By providing fresh produce to families facing hunger, Second Harvest and its feeding partners can improve our community’s health, one meal at a time.
