As part of the first round of Resident facing changes, we’re updating how you add Credit Cards and PayPal accounts as methods of payment on the Billing Information page of the Account Dashboard at SecondLife.com. This change is limited to the Add Payment Method process, but we wanted to step you through the changes here. We will be updating you in future Community Blog posts for the exciting changes yet to come!

While we have conducted internal testing, we would love for you, our dedicated residents, to explore this new feature thoroughly. Your participation will help us identify and resolve any potential bugs that may have slipped through our testing.
186.
187.
188. In conjunction with the introduction of 2k BOM, we have also streamlined the process for accessing the beta grid. Previously, residents were required to submit a support ticket to manually copy their accounts to Aditi. This process is now automated. Upon your first login attempt to the beta grid, your account will automatically sync, significantly simplifying access. Please be aware that the initial login may experience a brief delay as your account is copied over, but subsequent logins will proceed without delay.
189.
190.
191. We anticipate a temporary increase in system activity due to these enhancements. If you encounter any issues with these new enhancements, we highly recommend attending the Server User Group meetings held every Tuesday at 12 PM PST in the Denby region. Alternatively, you can submit a bug or feature request on feedback.secondlife.com. Your feedback is essential for refining and improving our services.
192.
193.
194. How Does 2k BOM Work?
195.
196.
197. You might be wondering, “Will all these new 2k textures slow my GPU to a crawl?” Fear not! There are built-in limitations that keep things running smoothly. Bake will still produce 1024x1024 textures if no 2k textures are included in your layers. In fact, it will always use the highest resolution among the inputs. So, if you only have 512x512 layers, your result will be a 512x512 texture. And for those worried about 2k eyes—they’re safely capped at 512x512.
198.
199.
200. Here are some quick examples:
201.
202.
203. Several layers with 512x512 and 1024x1024 textures: The largest resolution is 1024x1024, so your bake will be 1024x1024, with 512x512 layers upscaled to match.
204. Layers only with 512x512 textures: The result will be 512x512, no changes there.
205. Several layers with 1024x1024 and one 2048x2048 texture: All 1024x1024 textures will be upscaled, resulting in a glorious 2k bake.
206.
207.
208.
209. Inventory Synchronization
210.
211.
212. Each night, the beta grid will sync your inventory from Agni, provided you have logged into the beta grid within the past 24 hours. If you encounter issues where inventory items appear to be missing after synchronization, clearing your viewer's cache should resolve the problem, as it may have cached your old inventory.
213.
214.
215. We encourage you to dive in and explore these new features. Your input is key to ensuring the success of these enhancements. Happy baking!
216.
217.
218. Best regards,
219. 220.
221.
222. We know many of you have been waiting patiently, and we’d like to update you on our ongoing efforts to address performance issues.
223.
224.
225. Current Viewer - Atlasaurus (7.1.9)
226. The default Second Life viewer, version 7.1.9 (Atlasaurus), has already shown positive performance improvements, and we’re pleased to see progress being made.
227.
228.
229. Release Candidate - DeltaFPS (7.1.10)
230. Our next viewer update, version 7.1.10 (DeltaFPS), is now available as a release candidate (RC). It is already performing on par with our pre-PBR levels. You can download it here, but please keep in mind that as a release candidate, it may still contain undiscovered issues. We welcome your feedback through bug reports and feature requests at feedback.secondlife.com.
231.
232.
233. Future Release - ExtraFPS (7.1.11)
234. We are also actively working on version 7.1.11 (ExtraFPS), which is still in development and coming soon. Our goal with this version is to surpass previous performance benchmarks and take your Second Life experience to the next level.
235.
236.
237. Collaboration with Firestorm
238. We’re also collaborating closely with the Firestorm team to ensure that these improvements are integrated across the board. The next Firestorm release will include all the performance fixes of Atlasaurus, as well as additional enhancements that Firestorm is developing.
239.
240.
241. We’re excited to move Second Life forward in ways that benefit all our residents. With your feedback and the dedication of our third-party developers, we’re confident we can continue to improve the Second Life experience together.
242.
243.
244. Thank you for your continued support,

These links are usually unsafe and link to software that compromises your Second Life account or installs additional hidden software that gives a stranger control of your computer. Be wary of downloadable software links. Strangers may claim that their link is an early fix, a special version of the viewer, or an early release of an anticipated product. Don’t be fooled!
246.
247.
248. If you see a link advertising a Third-Party Viewer, don’t click it directly. Always check our Third Party Viewer Directory for a list of safe download locations. All approved third-party viewers are included here, and the official Second Life Viewer is available from the Second Life site. To help keep others safe, share this blog post and submit an Abuse Report if you see a suspicious link shared in world.
249.
250.
251. Last year, we posted this blog with information on keeping your account safe from phishing. It includes these additional precautions:
252.
253.
254. Be wary of unsolicited messages or emails. If you receive a message from an unknown sender or even a friend (you never know if their account was compromised), be cautious before clicking any links. It’s always best to err on the side of caution.
255. Check the website’s URL. Before logging into the website, ensure you’re on a legitimate site. A phishing website will often have a similar-looking URL, but with slight variations. Check for spelling errors or subtle changes in the website’s address.
256. Look for security indicators. Legitimate websites will often have security indicators, such as a padlock icon or “https” in the URL. This indicates that your information is being transmitted securely. If you are unsure if a URL is legitimate, you can always send in a support ticket and ask for clarification.
257. Use strong passwords. A strong password is at least 8 characters long and combines uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. You should also use a different password for each online account to reduce the risk of multiple accounts being compromised if one password is stolen.
258. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This will add an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second form of identification to access your account to make account changes.

Concierge and Land User Group Meeting on Wednesday, August 28th, 2024

The Concierge and Land User Group meeting is a monthly, public meeting for discussion and education on Second Life, useful to both Mainland Residents and Estate owners.

408. DeltaFPS will be the next Release Candidate (RC) which will contain many more performance improvements focusing on bringing frame rates up to and if not better than, where they were before. With the move to GitHub we are also trying a new development method called GitFlow. This will mean fewer parallel Release Candidates (RCs) and more frequent, smaller feature releases with only one active RC at a time. For this reason both Maintenance B and C, which were published and had several thousand user hours each, were closed and merged into the develop branch. All those users were offered an upgrade to Atlasaurus already.

436. Aug. 26 Update:
437.
438.
439. We are happy to announce that we have promoted the Atlasaurus Viewer to be the official Second Life Viewer today. As mentioned, this Viewer contains performance improvements that will benefit lower-end systems, stability fixes to reduce the crash rate, and also contains WebRTC Voice support (more info on that in this blog post). More performance improvements are coming in future releases. See a full list of features and fixes in the Release Notes here.

444. ORIGINAL POST BELOW:
445.
446.
447. Are you experiencing graphics issues or increased lag with Second Life after recent Viewer updates? Let’s get you back up and running without missing a (virtual) beat.
448.
449.
450. OFFICIAL SECOND LIFE VIEWER: UPDATE NOW FOR IMPROVED PERFORMANCE
451.
452.
453. If you are having issues with the Official Second Life Viewer, you can immediately download an update here that addresses many of the issues affecting performance, particularly among those who may be using older or less powerful computers. We are continuing to work on additional fixes that will further address texture loading issues and low framerates. If you don’t update proactively now, you’ll soon see a prompt when you go to login to Second Life in the coming days encouraging you to update.
454.
455.
456. FIRESTORM & THIRD PARTY VIEWERS: UPDATE OPTIONS
457.
458.
459. We are working closely with the Firestorm team to coordinate the rollout of updates that will improve your performance. You have a few options:
460.
461.
462. If you are having performance issues and don’t want to wait for the next Firestorm Viewer release with fixes, you can download the older 6.6.17 version of the Firestorm Viewer which its development team recently announced will continue to be available “forever.” While this version is more stable in the short term, it may not be the best option in the long term for those who want to continue to see future enhancements to Second Life including updates to voice chat in the coming weeks. Once the new release with performance fixes comes out, we encourage you to give that a try.
463. The next release of the Firestorm viewer will include all the performance fixes we are working on. You’ll be prompted to update your Firestorm Viewer once it is ready in the next few days, but you can also be one of the first to try it by joining the Firestorm Preview Group inworld and continue to stay connected with their development progress on the official Firestorm Viewer website and its dedicated download page.
464.
465.
466.
467. As a reminder, our Third Party Viewer directory contains a variety of specialized Viewer options that have been vetted and approved as alternative ways to access Second Life.
468.
469.
470. SO WHAT HAPPENED?
471.
472.
473. We are always striving to add more improvements to Second Life and we’ve been particularly excited to roll out integration of PBR Materials, which has the potential to improve and modernize much of the look and feel of our virtual world. However, the introduction of PBR has not gone as smoothly as we would like and we have heard community frustrations and feedback with recent PBR-enabled Viewer releases of both the Official Second Life Viewer and Firestorm Viewer.
474.
475.
476. We share your frustration and are taking steps to make things better for everyone on both lower-end and high-end systems. This means that we’re actively focused on improving the performance in a variety of areas including improved FPS, VRAM management, texture loading, alpha blending, and even how lighting is rendered within the world. Additional fixes are already in our development pipeline and will head to QA soon.
477.
478.
479. We know that many of you just want to log in and enjoy your Second Life and we are committed to making things right. We appreciate your patience and loyalty to Second Life and encourage you to continue to send us your feedback and help us continue to improve as we move forward. We also have the PBR wiki and several Support resources available if you get stuck or need help.
480.
481.
482. We’ll see you inworld!

We are introducing a modern protocol - WebRTC and will be transitioning away from our current voice services (Vivox) shortly thereafter. You can try out WebRTC Voice right now and enjoy the higher quality audio, stereo audio, noise reduction, automatic gain control, echo cancellation and improved security. Here’s our previous blog post from April for reference.
486.
487.
488. The Second Life WebRTC Voice viewer (now Atlasaurus+WebRTC) has been a Release Candidate viewer for some time and is on the cusp of becoming the default viewer! Download
489.
490.
491. We expanded the Second Life WebRTC Voice channel “Pop Rocks” to 4 regions:
492. WebRTC Voice 1
493. WebRTC Voice 2
494. WebRTC Voice 3
495. WebRTC Voice 4
496.
497.
498. Any WebRTC Voice-enabled viewer can also be used for voice on non-WebRTC, voice-enabled regions. Our Second Life mobile client (now in Beta for Premium and Premium Plus subscribers) also has integrated WebRTC voice support!
499.
500.
501. There are some known issues, however, that we want you to be aware of:
502.
503.
504. Conference/Group/P2P in WebRTC is not yet available on the WebRTC Voice regions.
505. An occasional popup regarding voice server incompatibility can appear. Restart voice if you see this. To restart voice in the viewer:
506. Hover over the speaker icon in the upper right corner of the viewer.
507. Wait for the dialogue to appear.
508. Uncheck the voice checkbox and wait a few seconds.
509. Recheck the voice checkbox.
510. Voice morphing is not available in WebRTC-Voice enabled regions.
511. Selecting another voice device while in a group, conference, or peer-to-peer call may drop the call.
512.
513.
514.
515. If you are using the WebRTC Voice RC Viewer during this period of time when most regions support Vivox Voice while only a few regions support WebRTC Voice, be aware that Vivox Voice Morphing is not supported in either WebRTC Voice regions or Vivox regions. If voice morphing had been enabled via an older viewer, you will see a dialog to let you know the implications of using voice:
516.
517.
518. OK - Acknowledges that voice morphing does not work in the WebRTC viewer and using voice will transmit unmodified audio.
519.
520.
521.
522. Because voice morphs are tied to Vivox, the third-party voice service that's supported voice in Second Life for many years, they do not work on the new WebRTC protocol. While we're sorry for this inconvenience, there are many excellent alternatives for voice morphing that have become available to the general public as technology has developed. For questions about WebRTC and Voice Morphing we have an FAQ to help.

This pause will allow us to dedicate resources to upcoming changes and enhancements designed to enrich our community's experience even further.
676.
677.
678. We sincerely appreciate the incredible contributions that each of you, our esteemed bloggers, have made to enrich the Second Life community. Please know that this decision was made with careful consideration and is not a reflection of the value we place on your work.
679.
680.
681. During this hiatus, we're excited to expand our Second Life Weekly Email Newsletter. This will be one of the main venues for us to highlight community features, showcase events, and share important news directly. We encourage all of you to subscribe to stay updated with the latest and greatest from around Second Life. It's a fantastic way to ensure you don't miss out on any of the action!
682.
683.
684. Moreover, we invite you to visit our Community Resources Portal, where you can connect with user groups and discover numerous other ways to engage and contribute. Whether you're looking to network with other Residents or find support and inspiration, these resources are there to enhance your Second Life journey.
685.
686.
687. We extend our heartfelt thanks for your understanding and continued support. The creativity and dedication of bloggers like you are what makes Second Life such an incredible place. We look forward to bringing you along on this next phase of our journey and seeing all the new ways we can continue to grow together.

The Magic Hour is in a similar vein in this regard, offering beach-front setting backed by tall hills up to which the landscape climbs, the entire setting rich in opportunities for avatar and landscape photography." He travels around and takes pictures and gives us SLURLS and short descriptions of where he has been. For example, this delightful robin image is a potential “Is It Live or Is it Second Life?” challenge question. I love it when artists don’t focus solely on the grand vistas but also hone in on the little details that make our world so delightful."
