20.
Let’s take another look at who some draft experts believe the Wizards will select with pick No. 2.

The Washington Wizards are continuing to have a pretty quiet offseason besides getting the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Today, with about one month left to go and with the draft combine now behind us, let’s look at some mock drafts to see which prospects the Wizards could select with that pick.

 41.
About a week ago, most mock drafts would not have included Sarr, who was more-or-less considered to be the No. 1 prospect in the draft. 42.
If you thought the Wizards (or even the Hawks) have an easy time deciding which player they will pick with their first round pick (or their first, first round pick in the Wizards’ case), think again.

 63.
 64.
The Mystics have played competitively to this point. But now, things are starting to sprial out of control.

The Washington Mystics entered Saturday night as the only winless WNBA team after the Indiana Fever won 78-73 against the Los Angeles Sparks last night. Unfortunately, things remained that way after they lost 101-69 to the Seattle Storm earlier tonight.

 65.
Washington began this game with a rough first half as they allowed the Storm to go on a 12-0 run. If it weren’t for Julie Vanloo scoring 9 of her 12 points in the first quarter, the Mystics would have been out of this game from the very beginning. Ultimately, the Mystics were down 50-41 after the first half so they had some shot.

 66.
Seattle’s knockout blow was in the third quarter when they shot 76.9 percent from the field with Ezi Magbegor scoring 10 of her 16 points in that period alone. Washington only shot 31.2 percent in that period, with Vanloo not attempting a single shot in that time frame. By the time the fourth quarter came around, it was all Storm, as they outscored the Mystics 25-10 to run them out of Climate Pledge Arena. Ultimately, the Storm shot 61.7 percent from the field while the Mystics shot 34.3 percent.

 67.
Aaliyah Edwards got the start tonight, scoring 4 points, with Shakira Austin out due to personal reasons. Britteny Sykes remained out due to an ankle injury. That certainly didn’t help things for Washington.

 68.
Karlie Samuelson led the Mystics with 16 points. Jade Melbourne also added a career-high 13 points off the bench. For Seattle, Nneka Ogwumike led with 19 points.

 69.
The Mystics’ three-game road trip is now complete. They now head back home to D.C. and take a few days off before hosting the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday, May 29. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. ET. See you then.

 108.
 109.
Edwards won’t be starting very many games right now, but she is scoring efficiently and is on track for a bigger role in the future.

Washington Mystics rookie forward Aaliyah Edwards is playing a smaller role on her professional team than at UConn, where she was a college star. That’s not unusual. But some local fans have grumbled saying that Washington should have selected Angel Reese, who ultimately went to the Chicago Sky with the No. 7 overall pick, right after Washington selected Reese.

 110.
Both play the same position, so I’m not surprised to see the comparisons. It’s easy to point out that Reese is having a better start because she is averaging 12 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while starting all of Chicago’s games. But Reese is also shooting 33 percent from the field and doesn’t have much shooting range, and she has only played three games so far. That’s a smaller sample size that the five games Edwards played so far.

 111.
Edwards is shooting 45.2 percent from the field overall. She had a near double double last Sunday against the Seattle Storm (9 points and 11 rebounds) and shot 5-of-7 from the field and scored 10 points last Tuesday against the Los Angeles Sparks. Also, Edwards is facing a bit more competition for minutes with Shakira Austin and Stefanie Dolson starting at both post positions.

 112.
Edwards hasn’t had a true breakout game yet and it is also frustrating to see that the Mystics haven’t won a regular season game yet. However, I think Edwards has had a good start to her professional career, and it’s important to note that the current WNBA season is still very young.

 125.
Vanloo will stay with Mystics through the Olympic break

 129.
 130.
Photo by Barry Gossage/NBAE via Getty Images

 131.

 132.
 133.
Also, in our most recent SB Nation Reacts survey, Mystics fans believe she will be starting for most of the 2024 season.

Since Emma Meesseman led the Belgium women’s national basketball team to Women’s EuroBasket 2017 and turned the Cats from an international afterthought into a world power, it affected her availability to play for the Washington Mystics. Because of Meesseman’s lack of availability, many Mystics fans have become cynical or get outright negative reactions about Europeans playing on the roster. I will admit that this feeling has hit me too. It’s hard for WNBA fans to appreciate European players when they have near-annual summer commitments for EuroBasket in odd numbered years, and potential world competition in even numbered ones.

 134.
Anyway, it should be no surprise that current Mystics guard Julie Vanloo, who is also Belgian, made the Cats’ preliminary Olympic roster earlier this week.

 135.
Training camp begins on June 21 with Media Day in Kortrijk. There will then be two friendlies there on June 28 against China and June 30 against Serbia. Then there are two more friendlies in Charleroi against Spain on July 12 and Canada on July 14.

 136.
Now … is Vanloo going to Belgium in just a mere three to four weeks? She won’t. Instead, she will be staying with the Mystics until July 16 when the WNBA Olympic break begins.

 137.
In a column by Patrick Ceulemans of Het Nieuwsblad (link in Dutch), Vanloo said, “I’ve prepared enough [for Olympic preliminaries]. No seriously, I think that this [my Mystics experience] is a “win win” for both me and the Cats. I’ll be playing at a high level here for two months. I’m learning with every game and take that with me to the Cats.”

 138.
Jenn Hatfield of The Next also reported on Media Day that General Manager Mike Thibault didn’t expect to see international players like Vanloo or Canadian rookie forward Aaliyah Edwards to miss time for these kind of preparations.

 139.

 140.

 141.
Some news from Mystics practice today: General manager Mike Thibault doesn't expect any players to miss time for national team obligations ahead of the Olympics. That's significant because the Mystics have many players who could be Olympians for various countries. @TheNextHoops
— Jenn Hatfield (she/her) (@jennhatfield1) May 12, 2024
 142.

 143.
 144.
 145.

 146.
So, in short, Vanloo is locked in for D.C. So is Edwards. And that’s a good thing.

 147.
Our SB Nation Reacts results also indicate that many fans believe she’ll be Washington’s starting point guard for most of the season

 148.
With Brittney Sykes recently missing games due to injury, Vanloo quickly got a starting role and has continued to be a consistent assister and scorer. She is averaging 9.4 points and 6 assists per game. Sure, the Mystics are 0-5 now, but Vanloo has kept this team competitive every game. The wins will be coming soon enough.

 149.
So in our SB Nation Reacts survey earlier this week, most of our 200 plus respondents (though just 53 percent) believe Vanloo will start for most of the 2024 WNBA season.

 150.

 151.

 152.
Also, the results of this question were divided.

But most of you believe that Julie Vanloo will start most of the season. She's one of the top 10 assisters in the WNBA this season, even considering their really bad start. pic.twitter.com/rffJr7nS4L
— BF_Mystics (@BF_mystics) May 24, 2024

 187.
The Mystics are looking to avoid being the last winless squad in the W.

The Washington Mystics are spending the weekend in the Pacific Northwest to face off against the Seattle Storm Saturday night.

 188.
At 0-5, Washington has had a brutal start to the season and is one of just two winless clubs left in this young WNBA season. Seattle is off to a disappointing 2-3 start after signing perennial All-Stars Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith in the offseason to pair with last year’s scoring champion Jewell Loyd.

 189.
The Mystics are entering the post-Elena Delle Donne era and are headed by leading scorers Ariel Atkins and Shakira Austin. Rookie Aaliyah Edwards out of UConn has been solid, though she’s only scored in double figures once so far in her first season.

 190.
The Storm entered the season as dark horse championship contenders after adding Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith via free agency, but they still have a lot of work to do to meet preseason expectations.

 191.
The Mystics and Storm have already played each other once this season. Seattle won that game convincingly, 84-75, behind 24 points from Jewell Loyd and 15 points and 14 rebounds from Ezi Magbegor. This time, Seattle will also add rookie Nika Muhl from UConn to the mix. Muhl, a Croatian, missed the first few games of the season due to work visa complications.

 192.
Mystics at Storm tips off at 9 p.m. EST Saturday night at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Watch it on Monumental Sports Network.

 211.
 212.
Let’s kill two birds with one stone as we look at who Wizards fans are rooting for as the NBA playoffs get closer to an end.

Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference Finals between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks is tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET on TNT. There is an Altcast, or another feed on TruTV.

 213.
On that note, let’s also share you our Washington Wizards survey results. Thank you to the over 500 fans who gave their opinions!

 214.

 215.
Wizards fans aren’t exactly rooting for a Celtics vs. Mavericks NBA finals

 216.
After the NBA Draft Lottery, the Wizards still have no head coach, and no clear schedule on whom they will bring in for workouts. Meanwhile, the Washington Mystics regular season continues (we’ll go over their results in more detail tomorrow) and the NBA playoffs continue as well.

 217.
We asked you a question about whether you want to see an NBA Finals matchup between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. This was because two former Wizards starters from last year’s team: Kristaps Porzingis and Daniel Gafford, respectively, now play for Boston and Dallas, respectively. Both were liked by the fans when they were in D.C. But 51 percent of the respondents didn’t want to see both of these teams meet in the championship round.

 218.

 224.

 225.
Also, every team in the Conference Finals has a former Wizards player.

 226.

 227.

 228.
Former Wizards in the Conference Finals:

Dallas: Daniel Gafford, Markief Morris

Minnesota: Monte Morris

Boston: Kristaps Porzingis

Indiana: Quenton Jackson

A former Wizard is guaranteed to win the NBA Finals for the 8th year in a row. pic.twitter.com/uJeAyT0rtA
— Greg Finberg (@GregFinberg) May 20, 2024

 232.

 233.
Fans want to see the Timberwolves, then the Mavericks win the 2023-24 NBA championship

 234.
Our second question asked which team you want to see win the 2023-24 NBA championship. The Minnesota Timberwolves were first place with 45 percent followed by the Mavericks with 34 percent. The Indiana Pacers were third at 11 percent and the Celtics were last at 10 percent.

 235.

 236.

 237.
And it appears that Wizards fans are rooting for the Timberwolves (@canishoopus) to win the championship, followed by the Mavericks (@mavsmoneyball) pic.twitter.com/0lWrtUme07
— Bullets Forever (@BulletsForever) May 24, 2024

 262.

 263.
 264.
The Phoenix Mercury guard believed that the Mystics effectively fired her last offseason. Washington’s front office doesn’t see things that way, however.

The Washington Mystics lost to the Phoenix Mercury 83-80 last night. It was now Mercury guard Natasha Cloud’s first chance to play against her old team, where she scored 14 points and dished 10 assists in the win.

 265.
After the game, Cloud spoke to the media, where she gave more insight into why she didn’t re-sign with Washington. It was because Washington decided to move on without her before the free agency period. Ultimately, Cloud felt like the Mystics fired her.

 266.

 267.

 268.
“To give eight years to an organization and to be fired on an off-day is kinda crazy, coming off a vacation too, so that was not fun,” Mercury guard Natasha Cloud said after beating her old team, the Washington Mystics. #WNBA #WNBATwitter #ValleyTogether pic.twitter.com/BndVOZ9I5g
— Desert Wave Media (@DesertWaveCo) May 24, 2024

 270.
 271.
 272.

 273.
The Mystics don’t see eye-to-eye with her on the exact circumstances of last offseason. According to Kareem Copeland of The Washington Post, General Manager Mike Thibault wanted to let free agency play out when Cloud determined that she wanted to explore her options in unrestricted free agency.

 274.
Also, Copeland wrote that Cloud felt like she was portrayed as a villain, perhaps because of her passionate demeanor. But the Mystics disagree that she was. Either way, there was friction toward the end of Cloud’s time in Washington.

 275.
When this situation unfolded, it could explain why the Mystics decided to core Elena Delle Donne, though she ultimately decided not to play this season.
