Several teams are competing for their league titles and others are looking to secure a spot in next season’s continental competition. For some teams, this is a chance to spot their weaknesses and look for a player who can become their game-changer in the upcoming season.

 42.
Some big teams in Europe are eyeing for a new No. 9 in the summer. Several players are rumoured to make a move this summer. One such player is RB Leipzig’s Slovenian forward, Benjamin Sesko. The youngster has been in the limelight since his performances for Red Bull Salzburg. Many clubs were eyeing a move for him. However, Leipzig had other plans and announced his arrival in August 2022.

 43.
Benjamin Sesko is playing regularly for the German club. He even featured in the UEFA Champions League. English Premier League clubs are the ones who have shown their interest in the 20-year-old forward. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are in a three-horse race. Sesko is playing for the first time in a top-five league. Let’s take a look at why these top clubs have set their eyes on this young forward.

 46.
Benjamin Sesko has played 1,822 minutes of football combined in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. The forward has led the line in every match for Leipzig. His progressive runs chart shows that the player likes to make these runs down the middle. Sesko has also completed a few dribbles in and around the penalty box.

 49.
Why clubs are in the hunt for Benjamin Sesko?

 50.

 51.
All clubs in the race for Benjamin Sesko are aiming for a regular goal-scorer. A player who can take their team out of touch situations by netting a goal in tough times. Sesko has scored 12 goals in the current season, with three coming in the last three games.

 52.
The forward averages 0.6 goals per 90 minutes. He takes around 2.67 shots per 90 minutes and the accuracy rate is on the higher side at 53.7%. All goals have been scored from inside the penalty box. We can observe that Sesko has found the corner of the net. His finishing is top-class this season.

 53.

 54.
This plot demonstrates the striker’s goal-scoring efficiency by comparing their expected goals to actual goals scored per 90 minutes. We can observe that Sesko is rated among the best for having a high xG rate and scoring goals.

 55.

 56.
In addition to this, the youngster also has an assist to his name. Sesko is not known for his creativity but his speed and skills have allowed him to create a few chances for his team. He looks for a runner and tries to get at the end of crosses by making runs into the box.

 57.
RB Leipzig might find it hard to keep Sesko next season. Sesko will also aim to go to a club that offers him more game time.

 74.

FSV Mainz are one of the historic clubs in German football. The club was founded in 1905 and is recently playing in the Bundesliga. Mainz got promoted in the 2009-10 season, after spending a couple of seasons in the second division. Since then, the team has had a mixed run in the Bundesliga. They finished in the top half of the table and also struggled in the bottom half.

 75.
This season is a bit different for the club. Mainz 05 are currently sitting in the relation zone. The team has only collected 26 points from 29 games. In the Bundesliga, the team sitting third from the bottom has a chance to save themselves. Mainz are in a good position and have a four-point lead over the team sitting below them. This became only possible after Mainz secured some wins in recent matches. The current form of the club is leading them towards safety. Here is a look at what Mainz have done in the last couple of weeks to ensure their Bundesliga status.

 76.
Goals galore

 77.

 78.
FSV Mainz are unbeaten in the last five league games and have collected 11 points in total. This run started with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach. A 2-0 win over Bochum was followed by a goalless draw against RB Leipzig. In the last two matches, Mainz have shown domination by scoring four goals each. A 4-0 win over Darmstadt was followed by a 4-1 hammering of Hoffengenheim.

 79.
The team averages one goal per match this season. However, in the last four games, the average is just above two goals. By looking at the shot map we can observe that the players have found space to get into the penalty box. They have penetrated the six-yard box on occasions and scored four times.

 80.

 81.
Most goals came from the right side of Mainz’s attack. Six goals have been created in the last four matches. All these goals came in the form of some smart passes into the dangerous zones.

 82.

 83.
In their last match, Mainz created 33 positional attacks and more than half of these came down the right flank.

 84.
Tight defence

 86.
To win any match, your defence has to be in the best shape. This is exactly what Mainz have done in recent matches. The team has only allowed the opposition to score one goal. Before these matches, Mainz allowed the opposition to score at a rate of 1.5 goals per match. The last few games have lowered down the average of goals conceded. The goalkepeer has even made 13 saves to stop the opposition and kept three clean sheets.

 87.
FSV Mainz are in a good position to escape relegation and maintain their top-division status. They will aim to keep this good run and come back more stronger next season.

 103.

The 2022-23 season was an unforgettable one for Union Berlin. After finishing fourth in the Bundesliga table, the German club made it to the UEFA Champions League. They faced the likes of Real Madrid in the elite competition. Despite making it to the big stage, the German clubs struggled to compete in the league at the start of the season. They were sitting bottom of the league standings after a poor start to the season. With time the team recovered and started to move up in the league table.

 104.
The German club was involved in a few transfer deals in January. They sold some of their players and recruited a few to strengthen the team. Union were struggling to score goals. This forced them to buy some fresh faces to lead the attack. The club decided to sign Belgian striker Yorbe Vertessen from PSV. The 23-year-old has struggled for some regular game time and moved to a team that could offer him more opportunities on the field. Union Berlin have moved out of the relegation zone and are heading to safety. Let’s take a look at what this youngster has added to this Union Berlin side.

 105.
Impressive start in the 2023-24 season

 106.

 107.
The Belgian made 26 appearances for PSV in the 2023-24 season and spent only 812 minutes on the field. He played on the left flank on most occasions for his side. The above progressive runs graph shows that the youngster likes to penetrate the opposition penalty box with his runs. He averaged 5.1 progressive runs per 90 minutes and completed 64.2% of his dribbles.

 108.

 109.
In addition to this, the youngster scored four goals and created two more. At an average of 2.77 shots per 90 minutes, Yorbe attempted 25 shots. He had a 36% accuracy rate.

 110.
Yorbe Vertessen’s sudden impact at Berlin

 111.

 112.
Yorbe Vertessen is settling well into his new team. He is not a regular starter but has made regular appearances for the Bundesliga club. The striker has spent 328 minutes on the field. He likes to cover areas in the final third and averages around four touches inside the opposition penalty box per 90 minutes.

 113.

 114.
The striker netted his first goal of the season against Werder Bremen before the international break. It took him 12 shots to score his first goal. Vertessen averages around 3.3 shots per 90 minutes and 41.7% of these shots were on target. Most of his shots have been attempted from the left side.

 115.

 116.
In addition to his one goal, he has two assists. A crucial assist in a 1-0 win over Hoffenheim was followed by another one against Werder Bremen in a match-winning performance. The forward has created four shot assist chances and most of them have landed in the centre of the penalty box.

 117.
Yorbe Vertessen’s match-winning performance before the international break is the reason why he is so highly rated. He is scoring goals and creating a few for his team. Union Berlin will hope that he settles well in the team this season and makes an impact in his first full season at the club.

The top teams are competing for a place in the UEFA Champions League, while the other clubs are competing for a place in the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA Europa Conference League.

 134.
Bundesliga side Augsburg are also looking to make it to Europe and are pushing hard. They signed a Bosnian striker in 2022 from Freiburg. Ermedin Demirovic came and is leading the attack of the team. He is in the best form of his life and netting some regular goals. In the last eight games, he is on the top of his game. Demirovic already has 14 goals and five assists in the current season. This is his best season in his professional career. Here is a look at some of his stats that show how this Bosnian can take his side to Europe.

 135.
Leading the attack

 136.

 137.
Ermedin Demirovic spearheads the attack and covers a lot of areas in the final third. He averaged 3.9 touches inside the opposition penalty box per 90 minutes. In the last eight games, things have been a bit different. He has taken 42 touches inside the opposition penalty box and averages more than five touches inside the opposition penalty box.

 138.

 139.
This plot correlates the number of touches a player has in the opponent’s box with their goal-scoring rate, demonstrating their attacking presence and danger in the final third. This is a comparison to other left-wingers in the German top flight. Demirovic is clearly the best in the business when compared to other wingers.

 140.
Decent run in 2024

 141.

 142.
In the last seven games, Demirovic has netted six goals. The forward has attempted 50 shots this season and has a high accuracy rate of 54%. In these last seven games, the forward has attempted 15 shots and 10 shots have been on target. The xG rate is on the higher side as he has managed to take all his shots from inside the box.

 143.

 144.
In addition to his six goals are two assists. The 25-year-old can link the play with his teammates. Ermedin Demirovic has created seven shot assist chances. His involvement in the game is not that much but the player has five assists to his name in the current season.

 145.

 146.
Another key factor in Demirovic’s game is his ability to recover the ball in dangerous areas. The player averages 3.02 recoveries and half of them were made in the attacking half. By looking at the above viz we can observe that dangerous recoveries have taken place on the edge of the penalty box.

 147.
Ermedin Demirovic will look to score more goals and carry his team’s hope.

 163.

Wolfsburg have been one of the giants in German football. However, over the years they have struggled to compete with the best. They are building a strong team and aiming to reach the top. In the summer, Wolfsburg were looking for a full-back and brought an exciting talent from Italy.

 164.
The German club signed 26-year-old Danish right-back Joakim Maehle from Atalanta in the summer. He played for a very attacking team in Italy and caught the eye of many. Maehle has shown a lot of versatility by playing as a right-back and left-back for his new club this season. With the season heading into the second half, we take a look at how this Danish national player has settled into the team.

 165.
Versatility on the field

 166.

 167.
Joakim Maehle has over 20 appearances for the German club this season. He is a natural right-back and can also play as a left-back. On some occasions, he has even played as a wing-back. This versatility eases the job of any manager and gives him a lot of options.

 168.

 169.
Playing on both sides of the field means that the player needs to be good with left and right foot. The above viz shows the defensive territory of the player combined in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal this season.

 170.
It can be observed that the full-back has shown a lot of discipline by not giving away any silly fouls. He is strong while contesting challenges on the ground. The full-back has won 63% of his defensive duels and around 52% of his aerial duels. Maehle also makes around five interceptions per 90 minutes.

 171.

 172.
A full-back is usually involved in a lot of recoveries. These recoveries often lead to a goal-scoring shot and keep their attacking momentum. Maehle averages around 7.7 recoveries per 90 minutes and 32% of these were made in the attacking half.

 173.

 174.
The above viz evaluates a full-back’s ability to break opposition plays and regain possession. Effective full-backs will appear in the top right quadrant. Joakim Maehle has a high recovery rate but lacks a bit in breaking the opposition’s play.

 175.
Attacking threat

 176.

 177.
Playing as a full-back means that the player makes a run down the flanks and runs past the opposition. Maeehle averaged around 2.5 progressive runs per 90 minutes and 52% of his dribbles have been completed this season.

 178.

 179.
In the current season, Maehle averages 43.5 passes per 90 minutes and his accuracy rate is also decent at 83.5%. Around 2.5 passes were attempted to the opposition penalty box. The Danish national has provided an assist and also has a goal to his name this season.

 180.
Joakim Maehle will aim to provide more assists and make more involvement in the game. Wolfsburg are sitting in the bottom half and will look to end in the European places.

 196.

The January transfer window is open and clubs across Europe are looking to strengthen their squad heading into the second half of the season. Big clubs are often hesitant to spend money on players as this transfer window makes it difficult for them to settle in the squad. However, some teams try to sign players during this period as they are sometimes easily available or playing for a team in the lower division.

 197.
Eintracht Frankfurt have been busy in the current transfer window and brought in a few players. One of their signings during the transfer window is 20-year-old German left-back, Nathaniel Brown. The U21 international came through FC Nurnberg’s academy and was a regular in the first team this season. Let’s take a look at what impressed the Bundesliga club to sign this young talent.

 198.
Defensive qualities

 199.

 200.
Eintracht Frankfurt signed a couple of left-backs in the summer. Philipp Max returned to Germany and Niels Nkounkou was signed from the French club, St. Etienne. Frankfurt decided to further strengthen their full-back area and signed the young German.

 201.
Brown was exceptional for Nurnberg as he won most of his ground-level defensive duels. However, he struggled a bit in the air and that is usually a weakness of most full-backs. Last season, Brown won 64.5% of defensive duels, 45% of aerial duels and 47.8% of loose ball duels. This season, the defensive duels winning rate is the same but Brown struggled a biting winning his other duels. His discipline on the field is one of the strongest aspects. Nathaniel Brown has not given silly free-kicks in the final third.

 202.

 203.
One of the biggest strengths that the full-back has is his ability to recover the ball in dangerous attacking areas. In the 2022-23 and the 2023-24 seasons combined, Brown averages nearly seven recoveries per 90 minutes. Most of these have been counter-pressing recoveries and some have turned into dangerous ones as well. This is what a big team will demand more from any of their players.

 204.
Fresh legs down the flank

 205.

 206.
In the 2022-23 season, most teams feared Brown whenever he got a chance to run at them. He ended the season with an average of 2.2 progressive runs per 90 minutes and had an 86.4% accuracy rate. This season, the average number of runs has gone up to 2.7 runs but the dribble’s success rate has dropped to 53%.

 207.

 208.
The above viz highlights a full-back’s offensive contribution, particularly their involvement in moves leading to shots and their ball-carrying capabilities up the field. Brown knows how to carry the ball and is rated among the best. However, he has struggled a bit to create as many chances as he would have liked. This is what Frankfurt management will look to improve in their new full-back.

 209.

 210.
In the two seasons combined, Nathaniel Brown has three assists to his name. His shot assists map shows that the player has delivered some high-quality passes around the penalty spot. All three assists came from a similar crossing position. The player attempts around three passes into the opposition penalty box per 90 minutes.

 211.
Eintracht Frankfurt have a lot of competition for the left-back spot. Brown is an investment for the future but the player will like some game time.

 227.

African nations have produced some of the top talents in world football. Most of these footballers have been impactful, especially in Europe. The likes of Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen are rated among the best. There is also an emergence of some new players over the years. These players are slowly making their mark at the top level. One such individual in the current season is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.

 228.
The Egyptian forward joined the club from fellow rival Wolfsburg on a free transfer. Marmoush failed to play regular football and spent a couple of seasons at other clubs. In 2022, the player moved to Stuttgart on a loan deal and that was his first full season in the Bundesliga. A move to Frankfurt has worked in favour of the 24-year-old. Let’s take a look at what Marmoush has added to the forward line of his new club.

 229.
Playing Position

 231.
Omar Marmoush has been a regular starter for his side this season. He is leading the attack and has the most goal contributions for Frankfurt this season. The above visual shows that Marmoush has mostly played the number 9 role. However, on occasions, he has dropped a bit and spent some time as an attacking midfielder. He likes to stay in the centre and often likes to move towards the left.

 232.

 233.
The Egyptian forward likes to run with the ball and has progressed 27 times this season at an average of 2.05 per 90 minutes. Most of his runs start in the middle third and some of these runs from the wider zones are often directed to penetrate the opposition penalty box.

 234.

 235.
An individual like Marmoush often is marked by the opposition players. A 55% dribble success rate has won 38 fouls for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga this season. Most of these have been won in dangerous attacking areas and one has even led to a penalty.

 236.
Goal-scoring threat

 237.

 238.
The 24-year-old has found the back of the net seven times this season. Of these seven goals, five came against three teams that finished in the top three in the Bundesliga 2022-23 season. Omar Marmoush averages 2.43 shots per 90 minutes and has managed to hit the target 43.8% of the time. Most of his shots have been targeted to the right of the goalkeeper.

 239.

 240.
The above viz contrasts a striker’s overall attacking contribution with their shooting prowess. Players in the top right quadrant are those who are not only involved in attacking moves but also frequently take shots. Marmoush is rated among the best in the Bundesliga and he always looks to take a shot whenever there is space on the field.

 241.

 242.
The 24-year-old also has a creative mindset. He has already created three goals, with two coming in the game against Bayern Munich. Marmoush has an excellent ability to find a teammate in goal-scoring zones.

 243.
Omar Marmoush has made a name for himself. He is at the top of his game and scoring goals in crucial games. Eintracht Frankfurt will hope that Marmoush plays his best football throughout the season.

 259.

The UEFA Euro 2024 is just six months away and Germany is getting ready to host the tournament. Players from all the qualified nations are giving their best shot to ensure a spot in the national team for the summer tournament. Germany is one such nation that is looking for a full-strength squad. Julian Nagelsmann took over just a couple of months ago and is still unsure about his best 11. He is keeping an eye on the players and one player who came into the limelight recently is Stuttgart’s loan signing from Brighton, Deniz Undav.

 260.
The 27-year-old forward joined Brighton last season and was loaned out to ensure more game time. He is yet to make an international appearance and is also eligible to play for Turkey. Stuttgart have made a bright start in the Bundesliga 2023-24 season and Undav has played a key role in this start. He is scoring consistently and catching the eye of many. A look at his stats that show why Nagelsmann could include this forward in Germany’s final squad.

 261.
Proper No. 9

 262.

 263.

 264.
Germany has had a lot of No. 9 problems over the years. They need someone who can make space inside the penalty box and convert chances. Undav has made his presence felt inside the opposition penalty box in 10 Bundesliga appearances this season. He averages 6.5 touches inside the penalty box per 90 minutes, with a few touches made inside the six-yard box.

 265.
Another ability of the player is to dribble past defenders and get into scoring positions. The 27-year-old has completed 64% of his dribbles this season and has a high dribble success rate inside the opposition’s penalty box.

 266.
Converting chances

 267.

 268.

 269.
Deniz Undav was unable to find the back of the net in his first two Bundesliga appearances. He then broke the deadlock against Koln and netted a brace to ensure three points for his side. This brace was followed by six goals in the next seven games. Undav’s accuracy rate is 64.3% this season and his great scoring positions are the reason behind a high xG rate.

 270.

 271.
The forward has also created eight scoring chances for his teammates and two have resulted in a goal. Most of these passes are short passes and lay-offs to set up a shot. Undav demands the ball and rotates it quite nicely.

 272.
Deniz Undav will look to represent Germany in the Euros. He is scoring goals regularly and Stuttgart are flying high in the league table. Undav hopes to continue this form and ensure his spot in the national team.

 288.

FC Heidenheim gained promotion to the Bundesliga after winning the second division last season. This was the first time that the team got promoted to the first division. They have made a decent start to the campaign and the only aim for the players and the coach this season will be to guarantee promotion. Teams like Heidenheim will need crucial performances from every player in some of the matches.

 289.
One such player who has delivered in the promotion run and is delivering at the moment is former Borussia Dortmund academy graduate Jan-Niklas Beste. Beste made his competitive debut for the senior squad on 12 August 2017. He never made an appearance in the Bundesliga for Dortmund and was sold to Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old struggled for game time and was loaned out to a couple of other clubs. Last season, FC Heidenheim secured Beste’s signing on a three-year deal. Here are the stats that show why this German forward is the biggest hope for Heidenheim’s survival.

 290.

 291.
Jan-Niklas Beste starts on the left flank for his side. His progression chart shows that Beste is a player who likes to stretch the defence with his wide runs and there are only a few occasions when he tries to penetrate the opposition’s defence with these runs. The 24-year-old averages 2.5 progressive runs per 90 minutes.

 292.
Finding the back of the net

 293.

 294.
Beste played a crucial role in FC Heidenheim’s promotion run after scoring 12 goals in the second division. Averaging around two shots per 90 minutes, the player attempted 63 shots and had a 41.3% accuracy rate. He managed to find space in front of the goal and targeted the corners to score goals.

 295.

 296.
The player has shown tremendous form in the Bundesliga as well. He has already netted five goals and had a chance to add another but missed a penalty. Jan-Niklas Beste’s shot average is around 1.74 per 90 minutes and 47.4% of these shots have been on target. Once again, the player has found the corner of the net.

 297.

 298.
Another reason why FC Heidenheim have a lot of hopes is because of his ability to create goals for his teammates. Last season, Beste provided 14 assists and this season he already has four to his name. Most of these were from corners and few came from passes into the penalty box.

 299.
Jean-Niklas Beste will aim to add more goals and assists to his name. Big teams will be keeping an eye on him and secure his signing next summer.

 315.

RB Leipzig is now one of the biggest clubs in Germany. They play regularly in Europe and that too among the elites in the UEFA Champions League. A top-four finish and regular UCL football is impossible without a good team. RB Leipzig’s scouting has been up to the mark and the German club has produced a lot of superstars in the past. However, they face a challenge to keep these players and are eventually forced to sell them to other clubs. The likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Josko Gvardiol left the club in the summer.

 316.
Leipzig spent the transfer fee to bring in some of the top talents in Europe. Lois Openda was one of their biggest summer signing. The Belgian international has seen tremendous growth in his career. After breaking into the first team at Club Brugge, the 23-year-old earned a move to Lens in 2022. A successful season with the French club earned him another big move to Germany. Let’s take a look at how this young talent has settled in his first season in the Bundesliga.

 317.
High work rate

 318.

 319.
Lois Openda is a centre-forward and starts ahead of the out-of-favour forward Timo Werner. Both players have a lot of similarities. They are not traditional strikers who wait for an opportunity inside the penalty box. Instead, these two like to go wide and run at the defenders.

 320.
The above viz shows the ball progression made by Openda in the current season. He averages 1.84 progressive runs per 90 minutes and has a decent dribble success rate of 46.2%. Almost every run is made down the flank by this Belgian forward.

 321.

 322.
The above pizza chart shows the percentile rank of Openda in comparison to other centre-forwards in the top five European leagues. Openda is very highly rated amongst other attackers. His percentile rank in the attacking department is on the higher side. This shows the quality that RB Leipzig has brought to the team.

 323.
End Product

 324.

 325.
RB Leipzig signed this young talent to score goals. Lois Openda has lived up to the expectations and scored 11 goals combined in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League. The striker averages nearly four shots per 90 minutes and has an accuracy rate of 42.6%. Openda has scored every goal from inside the opposition penalty box.

 326.

 327.
The 23-year-old has also created a couple of goals for his teammates. Openda’s ability to cover a lot of areas on the pitch allows his teammates to take scoring positions in the centre. Lois Openda has created 12 shot assist chances.

 328.
Lois Openda has scored six goals in the last six games. He headed into the international break with a goal each in back-to-back matches. The 23-year-old will aim to compete for the Golden Boot and take his sid to glory.
