<title>How to watch No. 1 seed Texas vs. No. 16 seed Texas A&M in the Austin Super Regional</title>

The Longhorns host an NCAA Super Regional for the first time in 11 years. The No. 1 seed <a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com">Texas Longhorns</a> and the No. 16 seed <a href="https://www.goodbullhunting.com">Texas A&amp;M Aggies</a> are set for a postseason edition of the Lone Star Showdown starting on Friday in the Austin Super Regional at Red &amp; Charline McCombs Field.
Under sixth-year head coach Mike White, top overall national seed Texas is hosting its first Super Regional in Austin since 2013 and looking for the program’s second appearance in the Women’s College <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/world-series">World Series</a> under White after three Super Regional losses and the runner-up finish to Oklahoma in 2022. 
The expectations for these Longhorns are arguably as high as any NCAA Tournament in program history — Texas has never earned the top overall national seed, long overshadowed by the specter of Patty Gasso’s powerhouse, seven-time champion Oklahoma, which won three straight titles from 2021 to 2023, including the title win over White’s rising Longhorns two years ago.
Texas enters the weekend with a 4-3 record over Texas A&amp;M in the postseason with a three-game winning streak against the Aggies dating back to 2017 and the type of team that should get to Oklahoma City and compete for the program’s first national championship since beginning varsity intercollegiate play in 1997. 
The domination of White’s program so far this season arguably starts in the circle with three reliable starting pitchers and two relievers, all of whom have an ERA under 2.00. Three of the four have WHIPS under 1.00. Citlaly Gutierrez and Teagan Kavan both earned first-team All-Big 12 honors while <a href="https://www.houseofsparky.com">Arizona State</a> transfer Mac Morgan, a former top-10 recruit, came within an out of throwing a perfect game in the Austin Regional opening win over Siena, settling for a no-hitter instead. Kavan was named the Big 12 Freshman Pitcher of the Year with an 18-2 record, a 1.87 ERA, and a team-high 113 strikeouts.
The offense is equally high-powered, however — led by catcher/first baseman Reese Atwood, the first Big 12 Player of the Year for the Horns since Taylor Thom in 2014, Texas hit .383, leading the conference, with 84 home runs and a 1.095 OPS. 
At the time of the Big 12 awards, Atwood led the nation with 83 RBI and topped the Big 12 with 21 home runs, the single-season high at Texas. All of the regular starters bat .358 or better, although catcher/infielder Katie Stewart is the only Longhorn other than Atwood with double-digit home runs.
Texas A&amp;M doesn’t have nearly as much depth at pitcher, relying heavily on left-hander Emiley Kennedy, who pitched two complete games in the College Station Regional, holding opponents to a .132 batting average. Kennedy’s 10 shutouts are third nationally while throwing 23 complete games in her 27 starts to go with five saves. Expect Kennedy to start the first two games — there’s more dropoff for the Aggies after Kennedy then there is for the Longhorns.
Shortstop Koko Wooley keys a Texas A&amp;M lineup that collectively hits .307, leading the Aggies with 19 steals and a .389 average, although she only has seven extra-base hits this season.

<title>Anonymous coaches remain unconvinced by Texas QB Quinn Ewers</title>

The questions of where Ewers ranks among the 2025 quarterback draft class and whether he’ll live up to his lofty recruiting rankings remain open. With <a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com">Texas Longhorns</a> redshirt junior quarterback Quinn Ewers back on the Forty Acres to finally live where his feet are to continue living out his lifelong dream of playing in burnt orange and white while positioning himself for the 2025 <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/nfl-draft">NFL Draft</a>, one critical storyline the Southlake Carroll product faces is whether his production and on-field accomplishments will finally match the recruiting rankings that once assessed him as the best quarterback prospect evaluated during the modern era.
The projections remain high for Ewers as a professional prospect — Dane Brugler of The Athletic currently ranks him as QB2 behind Georgia’s Carson Beck for next season, but anonymous coaches who spoke to Bruce Feldman, also of The Athletic, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5493847/2024/05/16/college-football-coaches-qb-draft-class-deion-sanders/">remain more skeptical of Ewers</a>.
Let’s break down those opinions and where Ewers is in his career trajectory.

Quote: “I’m not that high on him. Overhyped. He has a good arm, and he did have a lot of talent around him, but you just see a bunch of stuff where you wonder what he’s doing out there.”

Assessment: If the standard for judging whether Ewers is “overhyped” is the evaluation of him as the best quarterback prospect in a generation, perhaps that’s fair. Or at least not exceedingly unfair.
A more sober perspective on Ewers would consider the reps he missed when he was injured as a junior at Carroll and the reps he missed buried on the depth chart at <a href="https://www.landgrantholyland.com">Ohio State</a> after re-classifying to the 2021 recruiting class. 
That perspective would consider the limitations of the 2022 Texas offense — the broken hand that Xavier Worthy played through, the absolute lack of wide receiver depth following injuries to Isaiah Neyor and Jordan Whittington, and the inexperience of tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. 
That perspective would note the vast improvement of Ewers in 2023 as his pass catchers improved, growth shown in his completion percentage jumping to 69 percent, his yards per attempt soaring to 8.8, and his interception rate dropping to 1.5 percent.
It’s that interception rate in particular that begs for more context for this defensive back coach’s view that Ewers does “a bunch of stuff where you wonder what he’s doing out there.”
Unfortunately, that context isn’t present, but it’s worth noting that Ewers is working to grow this offseason in his ability to read defenses and has improved his pocket presence, according to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.
“Right now, I’m really just trying to focus on defensive recognition, anticipating what they can do so I can get the reads faster — it just makes my whole my job a lot easier,” said Ewers during spring practice.
Better pre-snap and post-snap reads by Ewers, a reasonable and relatively baseline expectation entering his third season as a starter, would help the Texas quarterback get the ball out on time and in rhythm more consistently, manipulate defenses with his eyes, and ensure that he can get to the right read.
On longer-developing plays that range from shots Sarkisian wants to take or strong coverage that forces Ewers to get to his third or fourth reads in his progression, an improved ability to remain in the pocket with eyes downhill will only benefit Ewers. Coming out of spring practice, Sarkisian cited it as his quarterback’s greatest area of progression over the last two years.
“That ability to trust the timing of your drops and where the ball’s supposed to go, keeping your eyes up in the pocket, making those subtle movements in the pocket. A lot of times when a quarterback moves, he doesn’t need to move very far, he just needs to move swiftly enough keeping his vision downfield and then stand firm to deliver the ball as accurately as possible, which is the skill set that these guys have the ability to do and then having that sixth sense of knowing when to tuck it and then escape and pocket and run and I think that that’s a learned trait,” said Sarkisian in an appearance on the <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/on-second-thought-ep-336-football-coach-steve-sarkisian/id1106676457?i=1000655029252">On Second Thought podcast</a>.

Quote: “I think he’s just still trying to figure things out. Sark does such a good job of setting things up for him, and so you’ll see times where he’ll rip it, but then there are other times, he just seems to be a little timid.”

Assessment: A key part of Ewers’ decision to return to Texas was the strength of the 2024 NFL Draft class. But in discussing that decision, Ewers revealed that his camp put together a chart correlating college experience with NFL success.
“I just wanted to put myself in a better spot to be able to succeed at a high level once I hopefully get there,” said Ewers.
So Ewers is unquestionably still trying to figure things out and that’s not surprising for a redshirt junior who skipped a year of high school.
Whatever timidity exists for Ewers is another area with projected improvement based on his increased commitment to the little details of his craft, an area that suffered some in 2022 when he thought he’d arrived following the 49-0 win over Oklahoma in the <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/cotton-bowl">Cotton Bowl</a>.
“I’ve grown a whole lot in every aspect of quarterbacking. My first year, the wheels were turning pretty fast,” said Ewers. “Finally, last year slowed down and now I can really play the quarterback position the way it’s supposed to be played this year.”

Quote: “I’m very curious to watch him this year. The last two years he had superstars around him. There’s some ‘Oh My God!’ throws on film that he made against Alabama, but he was just so inconsistent. I think he’s about average athletically.”

Assessment: There’s a common thread in these three quotes about Ewers that take care to mention the talent around him or Sarkisian’s ability as a play caller. Hanging in the margins is the implications that Ewers, at his best moments, was merely a cog in a bigger system rather than a driving force in the successes Texas has achieved over the last two years, most of which came in 2023 with the upset over Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Big 12 title, and the College Football Playoff appearance.
It also verges on disingenuousness because every successful quarterback has talent around him and at least a competent play caller — the ability to put talent around Ewers that runs a scheme devised by one of the best offensive minds in college football is why Ewers was able to make a sound business decision enrolling at Texas rather than merely living out his lifelong dream.
So the effort to subtly negate Ewers’ accomplishments because of those factors hurts the credibility of these coaches.
At least as it relates to last season, selling inconsistency as a defining aspect of how Ewers performed is certainly possible.
Ewers completed only 52.4 percent of his passes in a victory over Wyoming that remained close until the fourth quarter. His receivers also dropped three passes, 21.4 percent of his on-target passes. 
In the only regular-season loss, to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, Ewers had some definitively low moments. 
On the first possession, Ewers threw an interception near the Texas red zone that led to a touchdown five plays later when he stared down wide receiver AD Mitchell and then threw late as the cornerback ran the route for Mitchell. 
In the Sooners red zone on the next possession, Ewers threw a pop pass over the middle intended for Sanders, but the pass was high, leaving his tight end exposed to a defender who arrived with the football, knocking it into the air and creating an interception.
With Texas down 10 and attempting to respond to an Oklahoma touchdown to start the second half, Ewers scrambled up the middle on 3rd and 12 and fumbled the football after a five-yard gain even though it was in the proper hand away from the hit.
Ball security was an issue for Ewers in 2023 with five total fumbles.
Average athleticism is a reasonable criticism as well, though Ewers has worked to maximize it by losing weight and improving his strength, which helped him scramble for 224 yards and 14 first downs last season while recording five rushing touchdowns. 
And athleticism was never really the selling point for Ewers as a generational prospect, but perhaps those average projections should have played a larger role in his high school evaluations.

Quote: “I do think he’s come a long way from 2022. There was too much of the Mahomes comparisons around him coming into college. He does have a good arm, but he’s not anywhere near as athletic nor the playmaker Mahomes is, or has that kind of presence. It’s kind of a strange deal because people want to talk about that, about what he was supposed to be, or they want to talk about Arch Manning behind him. But that isn’t the kid’s fault.”

Assessment: It’s important to point out why Ewers was getting comparisons to Mahomes — it was less about his overall skill set and more about his penchant for delivering off-platform throws, an area of some contention around Ewers because his footwork has been sloppy at times on throws that should be on platform, particularly in 2022. 
Mahomes was also in a much different spot as a college player than Ewers. Ranked as a consensus three-star prospect in the 2014 recruiting class, Mahomes was outside the top 20 pro-style passers in that cycle and experienced minimal team success at Texas Tech as the Red Raiders went 16-23 in the three years that Mahomes spent in Lubbock. In a pass-heavy offense, Mahomes put up big passing numbers, but also never completed passes at the rate that Ewers did last year, never averaged the number of yards per attempt, and had a career interception rate of 2.1, higher than Ewers as a redshirt freshman.
The lack of efficiency and per-play passing numbers are arguably a result of the load that Mahomes had to carry and the lack of talent around him while also putting into perspective the level of personal and team success that Ewers and Texas achieved last year.
As the No. 10 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mahomes also faced questions about his projections to the next level 
Comparisons of Ewers to Mahomes might never be particularly apt beyond the off-platform throws, but it’s worth noting that the Texas starter is positioning himself to come off the board in a similar part of next year’s draft after an extremely successful college career that could put him among the best quarterbacks in school history.
Perhaps then the conversation can shift away from the recruiting rankings, comparisons to an all-time great like Mahomes, and even away from Manning for a while.
And the last part unquestionably rings true — none of the rankings or the comparisons are Ewers’ fault. The deficiencies he’s shown over his first two years on the Forty Acres, but the trajectory is positive for addressing them.

With the first official day in the SEC now only 39 days away, the Longhorns are transitioning to their new conference logo. With 100 days until the <a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com">Texas Longhorns</a> open the 2024 season and 128 days until the first SEC home game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the grounds crew is now installing the new conference logos on Campbell-Williams Field, as revealed by photos shared with Inside Texas.

<a href="https://www.on3.com/college/texas-longhorns/news/texas-shows-off-new-sec-patches-on-football-uniforms/">The equipment staff began sewing SEC logos onto the football uniforms worn by recruits on visits as far back as January</a> and now that Big 12 competition is complete for all the athletic programs in the 2023-24 academic calendar year, the Longhorns are preparing the facilities for the official move to the SEC on July 1. 
The Big 12 logos had remained on Campbell-Williams Field through spring practice, which culminated with the annual Orange-White game on April 20, and are finally transitioning with summer conditioning looming.
Texas will celebrate the move to the SEC with a party at the Tower on June 30.
“We know the anticipation of going into the Southeastern Conference is coming, and we wanted to let everyone know that Texas lives there,” Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte said in February at his annual Town Hall address. “In 1903, Texas was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic (Association), the precursor to the SEC. That was where we were at one time, and we’re just going home.”

The former Tulsa pledge is now heading to the Forty Acres. The <a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com">Texas Longhorns</a> added another preferred walk on to the program with the commitment of Fort Worth All Saints running back Reid Watkins on Thursday, who flipped from the Tulsa Golden Hurricane after receiving his acceptance into Texas.

The 5’11, 195-pounder also held offers from Bethune-Cookman, Brown, Colgate, Houston, Navy, New Mexico State, and Troy in addition to preferred walk-on opportunities at Rice, <a href="https://www.frogsowar.com">TCU</a>, and UTSA.
A three-star prospect by On3 and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Watkins is taking advantage of the walk-on spot opened up by the transfer of running back Ky Woods, who committed to Nevada and former co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Jeff Choate. So although Watkins had other FBS offers and boasts a similar profile to other former walk ons who earned scholarships at Texas like linebackers Luke Brockermeyer and Jett Bush, the running back position won’t offer that type of upside with the Longhorns.
Before transferring to All Saints from Brock, Watkins reported a 4.52 40-yard dash, 4.17 shuttle, and 35-inch vertical leap.

<title>No. 24 Texas flames out of Big 12 Tournament with 8-7 loss to Cincinnati</title>

The Longhorns are out of the conference after two losses and now await their NCAA Tournament fate. Head coach David Pierce and the No. 24 <a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com">Texas Longhorns</a> are finished with the Big 12 and finished in Arlington following an 8-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday at Globe Life Field, marking the second straight day the Longhorns fell to a lower-seeded team.
Catcher Rylan Galvan went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored and right fielder Max Belyeu was one of three Texas players with two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning when the Horns took the lead.
The pitching didn’t hold up, however, as right-hander Charlie Hurley was unable to recreate the effectiveness of his start against Kansas last week, failing to record an out in the third inning when he allowed a single and a walk in an at bat he got ahead 0-2 before throwing four straight balls, leaving the game with the bases loaded. 
In an unusually early appearance for right-hander Gage Boehm, the team’s closer, the junior college transfer limited the damage to a run scored on a double play turned by Texas. 
Boehm ultimately struck out seven over three innings, but didn’t receive much help from his defense in the sixth inning when Cincinnati retook the lead — shortstop Jalin Flores committed an error and Galvan allowed a passed ball that resulted in two unearned runs against Boehm.
The Bearcats created more separation in the eighth when right-hander Lebarron Johnson Jr. got himself into trouble by walking the first two batters he faced in the inning and then allowing a three-run home run.
Right-hander Easton Tumis allowed another crucial run by allowing a single with a runner on first base and then threw away a pickoff attempt.
In the bottom of the frame, the Longhorns started mounting an attempted comeback. Pinch hitter Dee Kennedy was hit by a pitch, followed by a Galvan double and an RBI groundout by infielder Jack O’Dowd. Texas added three more runs on a two-run double by Flores and an RBI single by third baseman Peyton Powell. 
Needing just a single run to tie the game, designated hitter Kimble Schuessler led off the ninth with a single and pinch runner Jayden Duplantier advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Casey Borba. Duplantier was stranded there when Galvan grounded out to the shortstop and center fielder Will Gasparino’s flyout to right field ended the game.
Texas stranded 10 baserunners in the loss and went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. 
Projected as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Longhorns now wait for their seeding and regional reveal during Monday’s selection show that starts at 11 a.m. Central on ESPN2.
