Revelling for more room, Carrum Surf Life Saving Club members could at last have adequate storage space, thanks to plans for an extension to the busy bayside club, with the highest median number of rescues in the past five years of all metropolitan clubs.

Wild winds in 2010 resulted in the wall of the former clubhouse collapsing, which in turn led to a new clubhouse being constructed in 2013 with $1.5m in state funding. Since then membership has soared and finding space for jet skis, IRBs, trailers, boards and the club’s ATV along with other equipment has proved difficult.

In 2018, support was obtained from the state government, leading to $1.5m in funding to extend the upstairs floor and increase storage space downstairs. So what’s installed?

Key features include:

expanded ground floor storage capacity

additional change facilities, separating juniors from seniors

a family change room

upstairs extension for training and observations facilities

additional office space

realignment of foreshore ramp

minor cosmetic refurbishments including to the oxidised exterior cladding

Community consultation is expected to proceed, subject to the council formalising the 2021/22 budget with construction considered for 2022.

Bold plans for the $14.5m Mentone Life Saving Club redevelopment, will see the state-of-the-art landmark feature a new roof-top viewing deck serving up more than just bay sunsets.

It is not just the salty seaside air that finds its way to Mentone beach, so do tens-of-thousands visitors annually, who will be able to take in expansive views from shaded seating or the balcony. Visitors under plans recently approved will be greeted by a meandering boardwalk from Beach Road to the promenade under stage one plans.

Ample storage space, a kitchenette, kiosk, gym, office, dining and social facilities along with toilet, shower and training amenities are some of the facility’s features. It is all possible thanks to local and state funding contributions that will see Mentone become one of Kingston’s largest life saving clubhouses.

Only a kick away, Hawthorn Football Club’s Kennedy Community Centre a part of their $100m home base, will also include a pavilion, ovals and indoor courts for community use.

There is a catch: State Government funding is yet to be provided for the world-class Dingley Village facility. Meanwhile the Federal Government has committed $15m in addition to the club’s fundraising and their own $30m contribution.

According to Hawthorn FC president, Jeff Kennett the Kennedy Community Centre, named after former club captain and premiership player, John Kennedy Sr would meet “changing needs.” Female participation in the sport is increasing, with the facilities to also be home to Hawthorn’s AFLW team.

“The plans for the centre are built on the Kennedy family’s spirit of inclusion, working together and giving back and we look forward to bringing this vision to life,” Mr Kennett said.

A further presentation on the 28-hectare development at 94 Tootal Rd is expected to come forward to Kingston City Council for consideration. Construction could begin as soon as later this year, subject to the Council committing $14m to the project.

You laugh and say, there is no surf in the bay! Well, tell that to locals with their surfboards and boogie boards tucked under arm, who are taking to the river mouth on days whipping up strong westerly winds.

Thrash and crash — breaking off the rocks at the river mouth, aptly named Rockies are waves ranging up to 3ft, which are often produced during winter’s polar plunge. Founder, Sammy Ridgway (pictured) with “contracted” photographer Maxy Carmichael, have started their own Facebook page to capture the shenanigans as well.

Onlookers may be amused but before their time, surfing magnet Phil Trigger was catching bay waves at Bonbeach, who went on to start surfing company, Trigger Brothers.

So if you see locals with surfboards tucked under arms, give them a wave as they turn a wintery day into fun. Please note: insulting a Carrum boardrider is a jail-able offence. P.P.S: the boys loved the write up.

A $4.5 million dollar life ring will be thrown to Aspendale Life Saving Club and the exciting new plans certainly make a splash.

Aspendale Life Saving Club put their case to Life Saving Victoria and the state government, following a campaign in which president Chad Henry said the club was at its “wits end.” The state government is contributing $2 million towards the upgrade, supported by a further $2.5 million from the council.

President Chad Henry said the club was in “dire straits.” Note: old footage shot when I was learning to film

ORIGINAL STORY: ASPENDALE LIFEGUARDS LOOK TO A NEW FUTURE
UPDATE: REBUILD MATERIALISES FOR ASPENDALE LIFE SAVING CLUB

Logistically mad, the club’s storage room is crowded with boards wall-to-wall, sandwiched behind inflatable boats stacked on top of each other. Meanwhile the building itself has been facing structural integrity issues, against the rising tide of soaring nippers numbers and membership growth.

These issues will soon be a thing of the past, with the new clubhouse affording a spacious storage room, new change facilities along with a kitchen plus a shared training and function room. A new observation tower complete with a lift will provide striking panoramic views of the bay, but most pertinently will allow lifesavers to keep watch over swimmers at the busy beach.

Taking styling cues from the coastal environment, timber walkways will provide access to the DDA compliant facility at Groves St, Aspendale. Construction could get underway as soon as 2020, after the planning permit is advertised and following the appointment of a builder.

Follow me: https://www.facebook.com/camhoweverified/

Considered to be a hidden gem, Bonbeach’s white sands beside the bay have been patrolled by the club since 1932. The DDA-compliant clubhouse (left) will feature a spacious storage room, training and multipurpose spaces plus a kitchenette. Volunteer life savers will be able to keep an eagle’s eye over swimmers from the impressive observation tower and balcony too.

Commitments of $2.5 million and $2 million, respectively were made by the City of Kingston and the state government to facilitate the project.

With preliminary community consultation now complete and the planning permit advertised, tendering for the state-of-the-art project is now on the horizon.

A quick deviation prior to entering the main entrance to Point Nepean will take you to London Bridge (left); a unique rock formation that can be viewed from the lookout, or alternatively up close from the ‘amphitheatre like’ interior that peers out to sea.

Upon entering the national park and parking at Gunnars Cottage, a long, sealed road will take you past Cheviot Hill to the Eagles Nest to investigate the remnant military battlements and gun emplacements.

Eagles Nest (main picture) is the perfect vantage point to take in the striking panoramic views of the placid, Port Phillip Bay and brooding Bass Strait. Meanwhile the neighbouring, Fort Pearce built in 1910 allows you to venture inside to the former living quarters of soldiers.

Further abound is Fort Nepean at the end of the Peninsula that takes in the expansive, turquoise blues of The Rip that separates the two Peninsulas at the heads. Here you can step down into a labyrinth of tunnels, putting yourself into the shoes of soldiers from both WWI and WWII.

On return and stopping by Cheviot Beach is where former Australian Prime Minister, Harold Hold took his last swim and disappeared into the blue in 1967.

Arriving back at the Gunnars Cottage car park and before leaving, don’t forget to venture to the 1852-built Quarantine Station, where some of Australia’s first arrivals stepped off the boat. The ‘1850s Gold Rush brought by the boatload, new-settlers to Melbourne, who once stayed in the heritage buildings that are now home to the Portsea Craft Market.

My tip: Allow half a day for this adventure, pack lunch and bring a bike to cruise around. Gunnars Cottage to Fort Nepean is approximately 3 kilometres, excluding all deviations to sights along the way.

Mysterious and challenging the norm, the ingenuity behind No. 33’s production mixes film with live performance within an unravelling, abstract storyline. Non-theatre goers like myself were captivated in an immersive experience, where the lives of four women were uncovered in an intriguing, dark setting.

With our shoes removed, we walk into darkness, where a woman in a white, formal dress stands. As thundering music plays, she eerily steps forward to the repetitious voice of “Evelyn, over here.”

Images line the walls of the people’s lives that will be explored. Entering through the door, No. 33 into a small, dark room in a burst of light, four projectors fire on and off as the antique film begins.

Wafting through the air is a notable cello’s grind. At times the warm, ambient lights flick on momentarily revealing a live character behind a silk screen.

We are free to move around, taking in the rollercoaster ride of each woman’s life. This culminates in audience members reading clues, as they further investigate their relationships.

As a whole the show is impressive, however the storyline is complex, leaving some satisfied and others wanting to learn more. Shows are limited to 15 people for intimacy.

Rating ★★★★

Tickets are available from the Frankston Arts Centre in May.

In November, I wrote an article on the legacy of horse racing in Carrum, with special mention of Stars of Carrum — a horse owned by Carrum Football Club’s former premiership side. Due to insufficient space in Frankly Frankston Magazine‘s masthead, there were cuts and below is a continuation of my interview with Robbie Laing.

Carrum was once a country town by the beach, and esteemed trainer, Robbie Laing’s family arrived in 1927. His grandfather’s draft horses with a dray in tow used to dredge Patterson River by shovel.

“It’s hard to imagine now. He was the best man on a shovel they’d seen,” proclaims Robbie.

His father, Eddie in 1964 was an apprentice jockey at Mordialloc’s Epsom Racecourse when he bought a yearling from Flemington, which along with 14 other horses were stabled in Valetta Street, Carrum.

They were one of many families, with horses stabled locally. The Sinclair family used to train their horses up Patterson River behind a row boat to the bridge, before returning home to Tennyson Street. They too had great success on the track, with a number of winning horses, including Soul Star.

Previously I have interviewed: Norm Stephens, Freddie Mansour, Marie McIntosh (Roy Dore’s daughter), and Robert Jackson. They all in one form or another, have made a contribution to the Carrum and Patterson Lakes community.

Bipartisan funding from both major parties ahead of the state election will deliver a new sporting facility at Regents Park, Aspendale.

Commitments of $3 million and $3.5 million, respectively, have been pledged by the Liberals and Labor ahead of the state election, which will add to the City of Kingston’s existing $2 million dollar contribution.

The single change room has been like ‘packing sardines into a can’ during football games for the Eagles. Now with participation in women’s football increasing, the facilities have been failing to accommodate all users.

Edithvale Aspendale Sporting Club President, Peter O’Connor said: “This commitment is unprecedented in the club’s history, and bodes well for the future development of a ‘truly integrated’ Edithvale Aspendale Sporting Club, encapsulating football, cricket, netball and tennis, across all age and gender groups.”

With construction of two new netball courts expected to get underway soon, the funding will help deliver a two storey pavilion, with new change room facilities, function rooms and improved spectator facilities. Upgrades to the oval itself and tennis facilities are also on the agenda.

However, further funding will be required to reach the preferred design for the reserve, with the club looking to enter into discussions with the successful party following the November 24 state election.

“It’s going to be massive for us, we’re absolutely wrapped,” said Mr O’Connor.
