  48.  &lt;p&gt;Two clubs meet with eyes on more important contests.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="ECBmN9"&gt;Plenty of teams have little to play for in May, as title/top four/relegation races are often settled before the final couple matchweeks. &lt;a href="https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com"&gt;Tottenham Hotspur&lt;/a&gt; is not a stranger to this concept, but right now is quite strange territory, with a laughable league position contrasted with a spot in a European final.&lt;/p&gt;
  49. &lt;p id="9G6LLh"&gt;Look, as the author of 50-some previews this year, it is not in my interest to tell anyone to skip through this weekend’s fixture against Crystal Palace...but I am also not convinced that every single person in the Spurs atmosphere — from the players and staff to the lukewarmest of supporters — is not singularly focused on Bilbao. Two to go til then.&lt;/p&gt;

  52. &lt;p id="KyPKK8"&gt;I genuinely think Palace is the most consistent team in the league. Since earning promotion in 2013, the Eagles have finished between 10th and 15th every single season and are essentially assured to place right in that middle of that range once again. A -4 goal difference is extremely fitting for this club that is the definition of midtable.&lt;/p&gt;
  53. &lt;p id="5j1rJq"&gt;Tottenham, of course, is looking up at its neighbor in the table. A 1-0 reverse fixture was a drab affair at Selhurst Park in October, with a relatively fit starting XI generating just 0.7 xG with three shots on target. This very well could be the case again on Sunday, though the team sheet should look drastically different.&lt;/p&gt;
  54. &lt;h3 id="nZisku"&gt;Weekly spotlight: This or that&lt;/h3&gt;
  55. &lt;p id="K5bHNX"&gt;How different the team looks comes down to when Ange Postecoglou wants to give his first-choice selections some minutes ahead of the Europa League final. There is an argument to be made to play them Sunday and give them a week and a half to rest after that, but I think the better choice is to instead give some players limited minutes on Friday against Villa to stay fresh.&lt;/p&gt;
  56. &lt;p id="xVaYYA"&gt;That would mean once again unloading the bench this weekend. Mikey Moore started last time against Palace, and he, Wilson Odobert, and Mathys Tel are definitely the most exciting players to watch. The Eagles are average defensively, but have allowed just three goals in their past four, including an impressive 3-0 win over Villa to reach the FA Cup final. With their focus also straying towards the future, maybe there will be a chance for the second-team attackers to find some excitement over the weekend.&lt;/p&gt;

  76.  &lt;p&gt;Nobody’s quite sure what that means yet, but we can take a guess!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="CZF0Jh"&gt;A few weeks ago news broke that &lt;a href="https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com"&gt;Tottenham Hotspur&lt;/a&gt; were appointing former Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham as Chief Football Executive beginning this summer. Along with that announcement came rumors that Venkatesham’s appointment likely would mean the departure of Scott Munn from his role as Chief Football Officer and perhaps also that of Technical Director Johan Lange, but we haven’t gotten any confirmation. &lt;/p&gt;
  77. &lt;p id="cFOWh5"&gt;Well, we still don’t have confirmation, but today we do have some intriguing new nuggets of information, courtesy of the BBC’s Sami Mockbel. Sami writes that regardless of what happens in the upcoming Europa League final, &lt;a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c771lp46vmko"&gt;there will be some significant changes to the organizational structure at the club&lt;/a&gt; that may (or may not) include the head coach.&lt;/p&gt;
  78. &lt;p id="2YsU6N"&gt;The biggest, and yet still unsurprising, nugget is that the club is currently in talks with former Director of Football Fabio Paratici to return to the club in a leadership capacity. Talks are ongoing and are not finalized, but Don Fabio’s suspension from world football for his role in the PRISMA and &lt;em&gt;plusvalenza&lt;/em&gt; scandals at &lt;a href="https://www.blackwhitereadallover.com"&gt;Juventus&lt;/a&gt; is due to expire in July, which could result in his return to Spurs. &lt;/p&gt;
  79. &lt;p id="d4kyLu"&gt;Intriguingly, Mockbel puts forth the possibility that Paratici would return in a more generalized role somewhat equivalent to the position currently held by Munn, and that Lange would continue to take a lead role in identifying and acquiring talent. Venkatesham, meanwhile, would oversee all operations and make sure things are running smoothly top to bottom, while reporting to chairmain Daniel Levy.&lt;/p&gt;
  80. &lt;p id="3kqhLK"&gt;There is, of course, talk about Ange Postecoglou’s current position, and that if (a big if at this point!) he is not retained, Spurs are considering candidates like Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, Oliver Glasner, and Thomas Frank. Frank is apparently preferred by Lange, though it’s not clear who would take the lead in finding Postecoglou’s potential replacement.&lt;/p&gt;
  81. &lt;p id="o44UiF"&gt;It’s an interesting shakeup. Under this plan, it would appear Venkatesham, a highly respected football executive who is credited for the way he ran Arsenal, would keep everything in line. One would assume that Lange would lead Spurs’ team of data nerds while Paratici’s extensive football contacts would take the lead in negotiations for player acquisitions and sales. In this way, Paratici’s role is a little closer to the one he had at Juventus. This would also be a pretty strong indication that Scott Munn is the odd man out.&lt;/p&gt;
  82. &lt;p id="nLim9S"&gt;Could it work? I mean, who knows! But putting control of the football ops under a proven executive like Venkatesham makes me think it probably would. The dichotomy of styles between Lange and Paratici is a bit odd — the Black Box vs. the Scattergun — but it could be a really fruitful and collaborative partnership.&lt;/p&gt;
  83. &lt;p id="DRyacB"&gt;What’s clear is that Spurs think whatever they’re doing now isn’t really working, and that another shakeup is needed. In a weird season where Spurs could finish 16th in the Premier League and still win a major European trophy (and qualification for &lt;a href="https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league"&gt;Champions League&lt;/a&gt; next season), it could be that shifting around the deck chairs and making a couple of key changes is the magic potion that makes the entire backroom click going forward.&lt;/p&gt;

What can I say, &lt;a href="https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com"&gt;Tottenham Hotspur&lt;/a&gt; won a huge match today, are in another European cup final, and I’m flying high. But I think it’s important to listen to the guy when things are going well, and not just focus on the negatives.&lt;/p&gt;
  144. &lt;p id="nbWVQz"&gt;Yes, there have been plenty of negatives, and those shouldn’t be discounted. But one thing I’ve always appreciated about Postecoglou during his two years at the club is that he, perhaps more than any other Spurs manager I’ve seen since I started following this stupid club in 2007, really and truly GETS what it means to be a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.&lt;/p&gt;
  145. &lt;p id="rAIGKz"&gt;Some of that comes through with how he deals with the English press. There’s a game of sorts that reporters play with football managers in press conferences. The rules are unspoken, but we all know what they are — reporters ask leading or irritating questions to try and provoke a reaction, after which a narrative can be created, or furthered, or changed.&lt;/p&gt;
  146. &lt;p id="FQZacz"&gt;Ange knows the game, he just doesn’t play according to the rules. &lt;a href="https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/every-word-postecoglou-said-after-31602645"&gt;That came through in tonight’s press conference&lt;/a&gt; in Norway after the 2-0 win over Bodø/Glimt that sent Spurs to the Europa League finals on May 21. A reporter started to ask Ange a question about the importance of the upcoming final to &lt;a href="https://thebusbybabe.sbnation.com"&gt;Manchester United&lt;/a&gt; in the context of what has also been a disappointing league season.&lt;/p&gt;

  195.  &lt;p&gt;Ange Postecoglou needs another year.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="kImQS5"&gt;This post is a little personal, but hey — it’s my blog, I get to be personal sometimes. It’s been a long, tough season. I’ve suffered along with every other Spurs fan as &lt;a href="https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com"&gt;Tottenham&lt;/a&gt; has slipped from a club that we expect to finish in the top five or six in the Premier League table to one that will finish just above the relegation spots this season.&lt;/p&gt;
  196. &lt;p id="Gq8elS"&gt;But while I too have wavered a bit in my support for Ange Postecoglou as Spurs have continued to lose and slip down the table, I’ve never fully gone Ange-Out. Why? Because while the league campaign is unacceptable and regrettable, and despite a whole bunch of unsubstantiated ITK crap that suggested otherwise, Ange has never once lost the dressing room. His players have repeatedly and vociferously stated, again and again, that they believe in him and his methods, that they believe in the project, and that they back him to the hilt.&lt;/p&gt;
  197. &lt;p id="XTOmqR"&gt;I’ve never gone full Ange-Out because of the way he speaks. He’s forthright, clear, direct. And he’s unwavering in his support for the club and his players. He might needle the fans on occasion (especially the ones calling him a “fat fuck” from the stands or on social media) or get snippy with a reporter in press conferences, but I’ve never once thought that he, or the players, have given up.&lt;/p&gt;
  198. &lt;p id="5IyUB4"&gt;Today, after Spurs’ 0-2 win at Bodø/Glimt that sent them to the Europa League final, the club posted a video of Postecoglou speaking to the players in the Aspmyra Stadion changing room. I’ve embedded it below. You should watch it.&lt;/p&gt;
  199. &lt;p id="57v0Zc"&gt;To be fair, it’s a perfectly valid opinion to believe that Spurs need to make a change this summer no matter what happens on May 21 in Bilbao. That’s fine. There’s plenty of evidence to make an argument that he deserves to be let go for the diabolical league campaign. I may disagree with you and argue my point, but I’ll never say that people are stupid to have that opinion, or that it isn’t warranted. That said, this is a guy who has battled incredible hardships over the course of the season, including an injury crisis that’s unprecedented in my nearly 20 years as a fan, and has admitted it when things have been tough. &lt;/p&gt;

  228.  &lt;p&gt;SPURS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO THE SAN MAMES!&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="uX7B8p"&gt;Six years to the day after one of &lt;a href="https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com"&gt;Tottenham Hotspur&lt;/a&gt;’s most dramatic European competition wins — the Miracle in Amsterdam that sent them to the &lt;a href="https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league"&gt;Champions League&lt;/a&gt; final, Spurs qualified for their second European final of the Premier League era. Facing a Bodø/Glimt team that had lost only once in the Europa League, scoring 19 goals in the process, Spurs stodged up the match defensively, capitalized on two second half chances, and shut the Norwegian hosts out. Spurs got a goal from Dominic Solanke off a corner kick, and followed it up a few minutes later with a ridiculous blast off the post by Pedro Porro, and rolled to a 2-0 lead at the Aspmyra Stadion in northern Norway. &lt;/p&gt;
  229. &lt;p id="mNtdB0"&gt;The result gave Spurs a decisive 5-1 win over two legs, and punched their ticket to Bilbao, Spain where they will face a &lt;a href="https://thebusbybabe.sbnation.com"&gt;Manchester United&lt;/a&gt; team that they have already beaten three times this season. The final will take place on Wednesday, May 21 at Athletic Club’s San Mames Stadium. &lt;/p&gt;
  230. &lt;p id="p5RP4z"&gt;While Bodø is in the Arctic Circle, the weather was misty, wet, and relatively mild with calm winds, which played into Spurs’ hands. Facing an opponent that likes to break into space and catch opponents by surprise, Spurs instead sat deeper, let Bodø/Glimt have the ball, and mucked things up as best they could. Tottenham would’ve been quite content with a boring 0-0 draw; instead, they scored twice and took both their goals well.&lt;/p&gt;

  235. &lt;li id="NVLym5"&gt;Y’ALL WE’RE IN THE FINALS OF THE EUROPA LEAGUE LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO&lt;/li&gt;
  236. &lt;li id="VAWsee"&gt;There was absolutely nothing surprising about the starting lineup — it was the same as they put out against B/G in London.&lt;/li&gt;
  237. &lt;li id="6kue57"&gt;An ugly, boring match suited Tottenham just fine up two goals on the road WOOOOand that’s pretty much what we got. Spurs tried to slow the game down, subtly waste as much time as they could, and stodge things up — basically Big Sam Ball. Sitting deeper helped prevent B/G from countering and attacking into space, which is where they’re really good.&lt;/li&gt;
  238. &lt;li id="FfFmcz"&gt;Contrary to what we all expected pre-match, the artificial field didn’t seem to play very fast — in fact, the ball died quickly on the wet turf. Passes seemed to zip a little more but they didn’t carry much once they hit the ground.&lt;/li&gt;
  239. &lt;li id="aSGi65"&gt;Spurs did look like they were selectively pressing high initially to try and kill the match off early, though they did noticeably sit off of Berg early. Kulusevski man-marked Berg for most of the match and it seemed pretty effective in keeping him from overtly influencing the game.&lt;/li&gt;
  240. &lt;li id="eOQ7W6"&gt;Micky van de Ven won a defensive header inside 10 minutes, which felt at the time like a good omen.&lt;/li&gt;
  241. &lt;li id="sUiEty"&gt;B/G had the majority of the possession in this match, and that felt like by design. Spurs seemed confident they could let them pass the ball around and still keep defensive solidity, much like they did in the first match.&lt;/li&gt;
  242. &lt;li id="h3ctma"&gt;B/G were successfully getting forward more in the second half, which gave the match an edge it didn’t quite have in the opening 45. &lt;/li&gt;
  243. &lt;li id="vTNgvU"&gt;Destiny Udogie had a fantastic match, especially defensively — rarely lost his man, was tracking B/G players to the back post, made a couple of fantastic stops.&lt;/li&gt;
  244. &lt;li id="lfObWC"&gt;Another super solid match from Richarlison. In both legs he’s played better than Solanke as a striker and it makes me think what might have been if he’d stayed healthy this season. His sub was likely for fitness reasons.&lt;/li&gt;
  245. &lt;li id="Dwt5tK"&gt;Spurs’ goal was just a well worked corner routine — Tel puts the ball to the back post, Cuti headed it back across the face of goal, and Solanke was right there to poke it in. Fantastic, and allowed everyone watching to breathe. Honestly wondered if Cuti’s header was going in regardless of Dom’s presence.&lt;/li&gt;

  248. &lt;li id="tHKpmS"&gt;United also won their series 7-1 on aggregate over Athletic Bilbao, denying them the chance to win a title in their home stadium. Yes, it means another banterrific European Cup final (what could possibly go wrong) but as bad as Spurs have been this season at times, they’ve still had United’s number. And I’d still rather play them than Athletic.&lt;/li&gt;

Wipe your feet, mind the gap, and be sure to check out the other pages at this outstanding site. While you’re here, though, we have a few rules and regulations:&lt;/p&gt;

  301. &lt;li id="6hQxYr"&gt;We have rules against “relentless negativity.” Nobody likes a Negative Nancy. Don’t knee-jerk and post outlandish or hurtful things just because you’re frustrated.&lt;/li&gt;
  302. &lt;li id="vqcBkS"&gt;Along those lines, outright abuse of players or match officials is also not allowed. It’s fine to say “wow, that was a really bad call,” but it’s NOT okay to direct copious amounts of abuse in the direction of said official over a call you did not like.&lt;/li&gt;
  303. &lt;li id="I5JdhO"&gt;Treat other people in the match thread the way you would want someone else to treat your grandmother. Be nice. This is a community of fans, not an un-moderated message board.&lt;/li&gt;

  305. &lt;li id="8Q3o8K"&gt;Finally, while we don’t have a rule against profanity, please try and keep the naughty words in check. Also, language that is sexist, racist, transphobic, or homophobic in nature will be swiftly deleted and you will be immediately banned. This is an open, supportive community.&lt;/li&gt;
