97.

Exploring Teriyaki Marinade and Flavor Profile

 98.
Marinades are a great way to enhance the flavor and tenderness of beef or any other protein. By allowing the meat to soak in a mixture of spices, acids, and oils, the marinade can penetrate the surface of the beef and infuse it with flavor.

 99.
This process also helps to break down the connective tissue in the meat, making it more tender and easier to chew. The result is a juicy and flavorful cut of beef that is sure to impress.

 100.
Whether you’re grilling, roasting, or sautéing your beef, a marinade like teriyaki can take it to the next level.

 101.
The key is to start with an excellent-tasting teriyaki sauce. You can purchase many varieties in the store, but it’s also simple enough to make at home. The basic ingredients are soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey, and mirin.

 102.
The result is a dark, bold, full-bodied sauce that has a sweet yet salty flavor. This flavor profile is versatile because it hits the flavor palate in so many different ways. Even the youngest diner will find that they crave the full unami flavor of teriyaki.

 103.
The primary difference between a teriyaki marinade and a teriyaki sauce is the addition of cornstarch to thicken up the sauce. Do you wanna know How to Make Teriyaki Sauce?

 113.

Mastering Grilling Techniques for Beef Teriyaki

 114.
When it comes to preparing beef teriyaki, there are a variety of grilling techniques you can use to achieve the perfect taste and texture.

 115.
Here are a few different methods you might want to try:

 116.
Direct Grilling

 117.
Direct grilling involves cooking the beef teriyaki directly over the flames of your grill. This method is great for achieving a crispy, charred exterior while keeping the inside tender and juicy. To ensure even cooking, be sure to flip the meat regularly.

 118.
Indirect Grilling

 119.
Indirect grilling involves cooking the beef teriyaki off to the side of the flames, using the heat generated by the grill to cook the meat more slowly and evenly. This method is great for larger cuts of meat, as it allows the inside to cook fully without burning the outside.

 120.
Smoking

 121.
Smoking involves using wood chips or other smoking materials to infuse the beef teriyaki with a rich, smoky flavor. This method takes longer than direct or indirect grilling, but the end result is well worth the wait.

 122.
No matter which grilling technique you choose, be sure to marinate your beef teriyaki first to add flavor and tenderness.

 123.
And don’t forget to let the meat rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute and ensure maximum flavor.

 203.
Some of the most popular noodle dishes can be found in Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia. Pretty much anywhere you might find yourself in Southeast Asia, you’ll find a signature dish that the locals consider a mealtime staple.

 204.
Let’s start our journey with Thailand.

 205.

 206.
Pad Thai

 207.
Pad Thai is known as Thailand’s national dish and is gaining popularity in the United States. Many Asian restaurants across the country have their own version of Pad Thai on the menu. But what makes an authentic Pad Thai from Thailand?

 208.
First of all, the dish is stir-fried using thin rice noodles. Traditionally, it combines eggs, bean sprouts, peanuts, and tofu. However, chicken, beef, and pork are also popular. Lastly, it is topped with a flavorful sauce made of fish sauce, tamarind, and palm sugar.

 209.
The unique sauce gives it an attractive sweet, sour, and salty combination. The use of noodles allows the sauce to shine here. American diners appreciate the simplicity of the meal which makes it appetizing for casual diners.

 263.

Mee Siam

 264.
Finally, our journey to discover the best noodle dishes in Southeast Asia ends in Singapore.
Mee siam or also known as Siamese noodles is a dish made with vermicelli noodles.

 265.
It is thought that this particular dish may have been inspired by Thai cuisine. This isn’t all that surprising as the proximity of all the Southeast Asian countries indicates that there may have been shared influences not only in culture but in cuisine.

 266.
Siamese noodles are served with shrimp, bean sprouts, soybeans, and chili paste and are typically topped with red chili peppers, fried onions, coriander, and spring onions. Limes are used to drizzle juice to the diner’s preference.

 272.

Unique Characteristics of Each Noodle Dish

 273.
You can see this cross-influence evidenced in the variety of noodle dishes. There are typically three different types of Asian noodles: wheat, rice, and glass noodles.

 274.
Their uses vary widely and not one particular country can claim the origin of any specific noodle. The noodle-sharing influences seem to be across all Southeast Asian countries despite their geographic location.

 275.
It appears that Southeast Asian noodle dishes are created by whichever texture or flavor seems to fit the chef’s mood at the time. We consider this a good thing as there tends to not be a bias against any particular noodle. This suits us just fine, as we believe that there is no one right way to noodle your dish.

 276.
What really makes each noodle dish unique is the use of ingredients. Seafood is predominantly used in those dishes that were created in coastal countries. Whereas sweeter and vegetable-heavy dishes are found more inland. Do you want to find out about Asian Food Recipes and their Secrets?

 277.
Cultural Significance of Noodle Dishes in Southeast Asia

 278.
As there are a variety of countries that make up the Southeast Asian region, there is no one straight line for how a particular dish came into existence. For example, some Malaysian food ingredients come from Indian and Portuguese cuisine, while many dishes from Singapore have a markedly distinct Thai taste.

 279.
Fast forward to the present day and the line continues to blur as traditional flavors and modern cooking styles mesh to create unique fusion dishes. Fortunately, for us, this creates new ways to cook, delight, and experience Southeast Asian cuisine.

 280.
Local people in Southeast Asia believe that storytelling, anecdotes, and shared experiences are part of the essential dining experience. If you go to a traditional Southeast Asian restaurant you will hear people laughing and sharing tales. Each time you dine, you will likely get a piece of history, interaction, evolution, and enjoyment in one single dish.

 281.
Unique Preparation Methods

 282.
Southeast Asian food cooking techniques vary widely across the region as well. There are many utensils used for Southeast Asian cooking like the wok.

 283.
The wok is a Chinese-style pan with a round base and is used to cook a huge variety of dishes at high temperatures. When cooking on a wok the original flavor of ingredients intensifies and also preserves freshness.

 284.
Due to its shape, a wok can reach high temperatures, perfect for cooking different dishes, from meats to vegetables, and sauces. Ingredients cooked on a wok tend to have a lighter consistency, making the wok a must-have utensil in every Asian kitchen.

 285.
For noodle dishes, noodles are typically pre-cooked and then placed in a wok to soak up the flavors and incorporate them into the final version. This is a delicate balance, as you don’t want the noodles to be bland or overcooked.

 286.
Tips for trying noodle dishes in Southeast Asia

 287.
Like most cultures, Asian food varies depending on the region. Different Southeast Asian countries create their unique combination of exotic flavors and cooking methods.

 288.
While the majority of the country is full of hills and valleys, there is a long coast along the South China Sea that provides fish and other seafood delicacies.

 289.
One thing that is a common thread among all of the Southeast Asian population is that they love noodle-based dishes.

 290.
Depending upon the region some dishes are a bit sweeter or spicier than is typical in the rest of the region. Some areas rely on coconut-based curries while some are more inclined to use clear meat-based broths that are then served with noodles, proteins, and vegetables.

It is most often served with red chili peppers and chopped roasted peanuts.

 369.
Satay is another well-known dish around the world. Its simplicity is what keeps people coming back. Meat, usually chicken or pork is wrapped around a bamboo stick, grilled, and then served with peanut sauce. Even though satay is believed to be originated in Indonesia, Thailand has owned it in the street food arena.

 370.
Tom yam goong is a very popular spicy and sour soup. Many locals enjoy a bowl on a warm day, which seems counterintuitive for the rest of us. The lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves give it a refreshing yet satisfying flavor. It is usually served with shrimp, fish sauce, and chili peppers for a subtle kick.

 371.
A one-pot meal in Thailand that is sought after is pad kra pao. Stir-fried meat is served with rice and a fried egg. The chilis are the star of the show here, with less heat and more sharp peppery notes.

 372.
One must-try, especially if it’s mango season is khao niew ma muang. This classic sticky rice concoction is smothered in coconut cream and served with fresh mango off the tree.

 402.

The Role of street food in Southeast Asian Culture

 403.
Street food in Southeast Asia has seen an increase in popularity among tourists. Thanks to travel and culinary shows, there’s been a curiosity for street food and the culture surrounding it.

 404.
And while there are plenty of street vendors that are placed only to appeal to outsiders, hawking has a long history with the locals. Many street food vendors can be traced back to migrant workers. The food they serve is a representation of past cultures and traditions. Whole generations have relied on the making and selling of street food for their livelihood.
Around 2.5 billion people eat street food every day. These are not the “food trucks” that you think of in the States. Street food is an amalgamation of societal, beliefs and economic trends that impact the community. Preserving the authenticity of the street food vendors has become of utmost importance for those that live and work in the area.

 405.
Street food etiquette in Southeast Asia

 406.
Many tourists are overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle that takes place around street food vendors. While it can be intimidating at first, don’t let your fears keep you from some of the most amazing food on the planet.

 407.
Watch what the locals do. Keep in mind that street food is not just for tourists. Many people seek out a particular street vendor because that is their daily routine. They are contributing to society as well as finding nourishment.

 408.
Keep in mind that some actions could be considered rude or offensive. Many street vendors just offer one thing and do it well. Respect the vendor’s time and those waiting in line as they make their money by serving the most people in a short amount of time as possible.

 409.
Do your research and come prepared if possible. Ask questions about customs and learn the names of popular food in the native language. Don’t get discouraged if one dish isn’t quite to your taste. There are so many different kinds of food to be had, you’re sure to find something that will rock your taste buds.

 410.
Safety Considerations When Trying Southeast Asian Street Food
Is there a greater risk of eating street food versus dining at an established restaurant? No.

 411.
Understandably, you may have doubts about the cleanliness of the stalls. However, to further ease your mind, choose a street food vendor that is popular with the locals. This way you know the food is safe and genuine. Locals always know the best places to go!

 412.
Also, choose food that is served hot, not warm. Germs are unlikely to survive high temperatures or frying. Avoid foods that look as though they have been sitting around for a while. Politely ask to be served something fresh if the food looks like it was made earlier that day.

 413.
Finally, the food from a street food vendor is more likely to be fresh if the stall is busy. Again, another benefit of finding busy street food stalls means you’re likely to find something really delicious. Why not, you read a Detailed Guide to Southeast Asian Restaurants?

 463.
Southeast Asian cuisine is food that has been popularized in regions like Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Korea. Because seasons and cooking techniques have evolved over time, there is a lot of crossover within these areas.

 464.
This means that it is difficult to define just one particular area as the origin and the inspiration for Southeast Asian food.

 465.
In fact, a lot of regions influence the next so there is a fusion of cooking techniques and flavors. Also, with immigration and colonization, many of these areas have dishes with foundations in another part of the world.

 466.
For example, you’ll find some dishes like the Bahn Mi that were heavily influenced by the French.

 467.
However, there are a lot of similarities in Southeast Asian cooking. Many dishes are known for their intense and multi-layered flavors and aromas. They typically use traditional over-flame cooking techniques and are presented with lots of colors.

 468.
Each region relies on ingredients that are plentiful in that specific area. So while one dish may be heavy in seafood, the next may combine vegetables, meat, and sauce.

 511.
Thailand’s legendary curry dishes are known the world over. Although there is an endless list of regional variations of curry dishes, most curry is known for using coconut milk and a blend of spices.

 512.
You might be familiar with the term curry when describing Indian food, but Southeast Asian cooking considers a curry as an accompaniment flavor to fish, meat, poultry, or shellfish. Some curries can even be vegetarian.

 513.
Thai curries are generally wet and have a sauce or gravy-like consistency. Depending on the spices used, you’ll generally see a distinctive color associated with that particular curry. Thai is known for red, green, and yellow curries but other curries include Phanaeng, Massaman, and Khao Soi.

 514.
At Char’d our Thai Red Curry Chicken is juicy grilled chicken breast served over your choice of white rice or vermicelli noodles. We then add crisp shredded romaine lettuce, spinach leaves, and pineapples. We top it with our creamy Thai red curry sauce and some roasted peanuts for some added crunch.

 522.
Chicken and rice continue to be a fan favorite at all Asian restaurants. Although you’ll experience a variety of interpretations among chefs, the ingredients are essentially the same. Chicken and stir-fried rice.

 523.
Depending on the inspiration, you may find a variety of vegetables and spices used. But most commonly rice is fried with an egg with small diced carrots or peas. Fried rice has an al dente feel in the mouth and with added soy sauce it’s a great accompaniment to seasoned chicken.

 524.
At Char’d each of our bowls has a fried rice option. However, our Char’d Special Bowl is one of our top sellers. The Char’d Special Bowl is stir-fried rice, peas, carrots, onions, corn, and a scrambled egg. We top it with chicken and our gluten-free soy sauce.

 535.
Salads are a wonderful way to enjoy Asian food. They are typically lighter but they pack in a powerful flavor combination. One particular Southeast Asian version is gado-gado. Popular in Indonesia the gado-gado does vary from region to region.

 536.
Typically gado-gado will consist of vegetables like green beans and potatoes. You may also find a hard-boiled egg with shrimp. However, vegans and vegetarians can opt for tofu. All of this would be topped with a thick and spicy-sweet peanut sauce.

 537.
At Char’d, we came up with our own version of the gado-gado. Since we’re inspired by all Southeast Asian foods, we wanted to take the best of everything to create our Tantali Tofu Salad.

 538.
First, we take our tofu and infuse it with lemongrass and red peppers. Assembling the salad we start with a bed of fresh greens, cucumbers, pineapple, bean sprouts, purple onions, as well as pickled carrots and daikon.
Lastly, we add the tofu, hard-boiled egg, and sprinkled with wonton strips. The sauce we leave up to you! You can go for the peanut sauce like the gado-gado or change it up with a Thai chili or sesame dressing. Either way, it’s delicious!

 550.
Again, ingredients can vary according to the region it’s made, but generally, a spring roll wrapper is filled with a meat (generally pork, shrimp, or chicken) mixed with vegetables, rice, and seasonings. The biggest difference is how the spring rolls are prepared.

 551.
Fried spring rolls Cha Gio and Nem Ran are deep fried and create a flaky crispy texture that lends well to dipping and carrying on the go. Traditionally, Chinese restaurants will prepare spring rolls this way.

 552.
Steam spring rolls like Goi Cuon are steamed and filled with fresh vegetables like cucumber and garlic shoots, which wouldn’t do well fried.

 625.
There are various countries that make up the Southeast Asian region and each country has its own unique taste and cooking style. While there are similarities as they are all in Southeast Asia, it really is a melting pot of flavors and textures.

 626.
Southeast Asian cuisine consists of the regions that are located east of the Indian continent and south of mainland China. There is a mix of coastal, mountainous, and plains areas so that not only is the language and culture diverse, but so is the geographic landscape.

 627.
Some say that Southeast Asia is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the world. There is a wide variety of languages, beliefs, and traditions that span this area.

 628.
Not only that, many places in Southeast Asia were significantly influenced by neighboring Indian, Muslim, and Chinese cultures. There is also very strong evidence of influence by the Europeans as they worked to colonize much of this area up until World War II.

 629.
What makes Southeast Asian Food so Unique?

 630.
Southeast Asian food is unique in its cultural history and the way they prioritize the use of local ingredients. Many of the dishes that came from this area are all about using what they have access to since bartering and trade were generally not established until much later.

 641.
A wok is a steel pan with a deep round-bottomed originally from China. It is typically used for stir-fries but can be used for steaming, deep frying, making soup, and roasting. Using a chǎn (spatula) or shāo (ladle) with long handles helps to keep the cook protected from the high heat that is typically used.

 642.
It is said that when cooking with a wok the original flavors intensify and preserve freshness. Due to its shape, a wok can withstand higher temperatures which makes it perfect for cooking a variety of ingredients including meats, vegetables, and sauces.

 645.
The best way to get a taste of Southeast Asia is to visit a fusion restaurant. Here you can get a variety of flavors and textures. Some fusion restaurants add a little flair of European or American influences to better fit our palate. For those that are not all that familiar with Asian food may shy away from strong flavors.

 646.
However, for those that grew up on Southeast Asian cuisine, a fusion restaurant allows you to get the best of both worlds. And since every region in Southeast Asia is just a little different in how they prepare their food, you can find a happy medium with fusion food.

 647.
Some Asian restaurants focus on just one specific region of food like Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, or Indian. Unfortunately, you may be overwhelmed by the unfamiliarity of some of the traditional dishes or you might miss out on some of your other favorite flavors that aren’t indigenous to that region.

 648.
We recommend when looking for an exciting Southeast Asian dining experience that you choose a restaurant that offers more than a one-note menu. A fusion restaurant like Char’d takes inspiration from the best of all worlds so that you get a more rich gastronomic experience.

 658.
The banh mi is a take on the French version of casse-croûte meaning to break crust. In America, we’re familiar with the term sandwich.

 659.
The French introduced the baguette to the Vietnamese in the mid-19th century. It quickly became a staple food and by the 1950s the Vietnamese had turned it into a popular street food called the banh mi. After the Vietnam war, we started to versions of the banh mi become available in the US.

 660.
Today, the bread that makes up the banh mi is a particular kind of bread that is typically made in Asian bakeries. It still has the same small oblong shape but the taste is somewhere between a traditional French baguette and a hoagie bun.

 661.
To fill this delicious bread there are a few variations but traditionally you’re going to need a type of protein along with some vegetables.

 662.
Typically, pork was used but today chicken, tofu, or beef are equally as popular for a banh mi. You’re also likely to find the filling stuffed with cucumbers, cilantro, and pickled carrots & daikon.

 663.
Like a traditional sandwich, there is usually some kind of sauce like mayonnaise or chili sauce.
At Char’d our banh mi is extra special. We take great care to locally source the bun so that it tastes as authentic and fresh as possible. When you order it, you get your choice of pork, chicken, tofu, or beef.

 670.

Poke Bowl (Hawaiian)

 671.
It’s for a very good reason that we bring up Hawaii here even though we’re talking about Southeast Asian cuisine.

 672.
Over the years many Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese have immigrated to Hawaii. Much of the culture, traditions and food preferences have been influenced by those who settled on the Hawaiian islands.

 673.
One particular example of a culmination of influence is that of the poke bowl. The word poke is Hawaiian for “to slice” or “cut crosswise into pieces” to indicate how the fish was prepared.

 674.
The fish is actually the whole key to a great poke bowl. To keep the dish light and flavorful the fish is served raw just like the other ingredients to maximize the flavor.

 675.
At Char’d we like to call our poke bowl a Hawaiian fish salad. We use only fresh sushi-grade salmon on top of your choice of rice, noodles, or salad. We then mix it with pineapples, roasted corn, cucumber, edamame seeds, and our signature Firecracker sauce on top.

 676.
We also add a splash of spinach, sweet onions, creamy crab salad, seaweed salad, a dash of furikake seasoning, shredded nor, and toasted sesame seeds.

 677.
And what poke bowl would be complete with a glaze of unagi sauce?

 684.
Perhaps the ultimate in Asian fusion cuisine is when you mix a combination of Southeast Asian flavors with a quintessentially American favorite.

 685.
Our Nom Fries are our own creation and we believe you won’t find them anywhere else. In fact, we’ve heard that some people drive across the state or further to get their hands on our Nom Fries.

 686.
It all starts with crispy French fries, which is another fusion in and of itself! These fried taters are then topped with a generous heaping of a protein of your choice. You get your pick of chicken, steak, pork, or tofu.

 687.
We then add some grilled onions, sweet pineapple, our signature Firecracker sauce, and gochujang sauce. And if that wasn’t enough, we add a perfectly fried egg and a sprinkling of cilantro on top.

 688.
You’re going to get a mouth explosion of flavors that creatively blends a little western and eastern fare. From the spicy sweetness of the gochujang sauce and pineapple, to the savoriness of potatoes and meat it’s the best of everything Char’d is about.

 689.
Today more and more restaurants are integrating Southeast Asian ingredients into their menu. And for good reason as Asian recipes, especially those from the Southeast, are full of flavor and substance.

 690.
Southeast Asian cuisine is also rich in vegetables with very little fat which makes them one of the healthiest dining options. They are also adaptable to all kinds of diets, so whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or going protein-heavy, they fit the bill.

 691.
Char’d Southeast Asian Kitchen is dedicated to finding the right mix of Southeast Asian flavors with western influences to create a unique dining experience. We’re not a one-size-fits-all establishment. We believe that you can create your own masterpiece that is suited to your tastes.

 692.
As we make everything fresh when you order it you can mix and match your favorite toppings, sauces, and flavors to create a one-of-a-kind dish. Start from scratch with our build-your-own-bowl or take one of our curated bowls and switch it up.

 795.

Location

 796.
Choose a restaurant you can easily walk to from your place. A fast food restaurant will be located at shopping malls, whereas a sophisticated restaurant will be located in an urban area.

 797.
Good Ambiance

 798.
The atmosphere should be relaxed and friendly. Do they play music? How loud? Staff should be trained to avoid distraction and disturbing noise.

 799.
The Vibe Matters

 800.
You should go to places where you enjoy the overall vibe and atmosphere. Look at the type of people that go to the restaurant.

 801.
If you find that it’s a quiet restaurant when you’re looking for a wild night out, it’s advisable to go somewhere else.

 802.
For business meetings and serious discussions, you may want to go to CityLine restaurants with private rooms for customers.

 803.
Food and Beer Pairing

 804.
There are days when you want a particular kind of food. And if that restaurant is the only one available, then you have no choice. On other days, the menu has to be specific to your taste buds. Choosing a specific restaurant is easier when you have options.

 805.
Char’d has a wide selection of beers for all kinds of tastes. We have assorted Asian & local beers for all customers to choose from. We offer craft locally brewed beers in cans and bottles from Bishop Cider Co., Community Beer Co., and Deep Ellum Brewing Co. If you’re an enthusiast, Char’d is your place.

 806.
Excellent Service

 807.
You should opt for restaurants with experience, efficiency, and the ability to advise customers on the best choices. However, sometimes these waiters are super busy attending to a hundred things. You can play your part by treating them nicely, and you will find out that you always get good service.

 808.
Reasonable Costs

 809.
Restaurants have different price points, but the bottom line is, you should feel that the cost of your meal was fair and reasonable, even at high-end restaurants.

 810.
Culinary Expertise

 811.
Choose a restaurant that is passionate about the meals they serve, participates in selecting food menus, and are customer oriented. Managers, chefs, and staff should have appropriate culinary knowledge.

 812.
Good Hygiene

 813.
You might want to check restaurants at Cityline, Richardson before you decide to book a table. Have a drink first and check out the place. A good restaurant should be spotless. Eating areas should be clean. Proper food storage and preparation standards should be followed.

 1043.
Goi Cuon, commonly known as the Vietnamese spring roll, is a famous traditional dish in Southern Vietnam. Goi Cuon is a typical street food that makes a great snack as it is healthy, delicious, and cheap.

 1044.
This light, fresh snack is considered one of the best street foods in the world and a must-try for every Vietnamese cuisine lover. They are regarded as appetizers for heavier dishes like Pho or La Vong fried fish.

 1045.
Vietnamese spring rolls usually contain pork, prawns, vermicelli, and vegetables wrapped into a roll made with rice paper. There are thousands of variations and they can be customized as anyone sees fit.

 1046.
Spring rolls go by many names: goi cuon, nem cuon, rice paper rolls, Vietnamese egg rolls, summer rolls, and fresh rolls.

 1047.
The goi cuon is known for its transparent wrap, where you can see almost every ingredient used inside. However, the art of wrapping this roll was invented by the Chinese. So, how was Vietnam able to adopt this style of preparing food?

 1048.
Origin of Goi Cuon

 1049.
The Vietnamese spring rolls are said to have come from mainland China. The term spring roll came from the Chinese tradition of using ingredients usually harvested during the spring season and wrapping them into a thin pastry.

 1062.
Spring rolls came to Vietnam after the Chinese immigrants cooked and offered them to their Vietnamese neighbors. The Vietnamese spring roll recipe we know today was modified to be able to use ingredients found in Vietnam to suit people’s tastes.

 1063.
Goi cuon means salad rolls. However, instead of being mixed in a bowl, the ingredients are wrapped in rice paper to make them more portable. Vietnamese spring roll is widely preferred for its making method which replaces oily processed ingredients with fresh ingredients and boiled meat to retain its natural taste.

 1065.

Easy Vietnamese Spring Roll Recipe

 1066.
There are many ways to make spring rolls but let’s discuss what you need for a traditional Vietnamese fried spring rolls recipe:

 1067.

 1068.
Rice paper wrapper

 1069.
Thin rice noodles

 1070.
Herbs and vegetables

 1071.
Meat

 1072.
Dipping sauce

 1073.

 1074.

 1075.
Rice paper wrapper: banh trang

 1076.
Rice paper, also known as banh trang in Vietnamese, is an edible spring roll wrapper made from rice (and sometimes tapioca) flour. To provide a stronghold for the ingredients inside, rice papers used for goi cuon are usually thick.

 1077.
We like using circular rice paper (22cm) for making Vietnamese spring rolls. They are sold dehydrated. Before rolling, rice papers are quickly soaked in water so they become softer and more pliable.

 1078.
They come in different sizes: curricular, triangle, square, and half circles. We recommend keeping them in the package and only taking them when needed because they curl when exposed to air. These rice paper sheets can be directly eaten and they have a hint of salt aftertaste.

 1079.
Thin rice noodles

 1080.
Typically, a Vietnamese spring roll is made with rice vermicelli, which is thin rice noodles or rice sticks. Their sheets of noodles can be paired with grilled meat. They come dried in rectangular sheets and you can boil them like other rice noodles or pasta.

 1081.
Pro-tip – Instead of regular rice noodles, use banh hoi. Banh hoi is less sticky and way easier to move around, trim, and arrange in your spring rolls.

 1082.
Herbs and vegetables

 1083.
Vegetables are essential for the Vietnamese spring roll recipe. The most common herbs and vegetables used for spring rolls are green leaf lettuce, mint, cilantro, or basil. You can go for any soft, leafy green lettuce as long as they are fresh.

 1084.
We like a combination of carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, and sliced avocado. The sky’s the limit in terms of the ingredients used in a Vietnamese spring roll. Make sure to slice the vegetables thinly to make them easier to chew!

 1085.
You might discover a traditional Vietnamese spring roll recipe that uses lettuce leaves because they help make the rolling process easier. When you wrap the noodles, vegetables, and herbs inside the lettuce leaves, the filling won’t spread out everywhere as you roll up with spring rolls.

 1086.
Meat

 1087.
The most traditional meat filling for the Vietnamese fried spring roll recipe is pork and shrimp. Use fattier, better-tasting pork and medium-sized shrimp for easier wrapping. Vegetarians can also find a way to tweak this with tofu or mushroom.

 1088.
The best thing to do for protein is to marinate and fry it. Lots of spring rolls just boil and pan-fry protein, but the best way to experience the flavor is to marinate the protein before cooking it.

 1089.
Dipping sauce

 1090.
The most common spring roll sauce is peanut sauce. Tuong Dau Phong is a peanut sauce for spring rolls and is a mixture of peanut butter and fermented soybeans.

 1091.
Fermented beans are blended into a smooth paste, seasoned, and cooked with peanut butter at a low temperature until it becomes thicker.

 1092.
When serving spring rolls, you can top this Vietnamese spring roll dipping sauce with roasted peanuts, pickled carrots, and minced chili. This sauce is vegan-friendly and a common option to start with.

 1093.
Tips for soaking spring roll wrappers

 1094.

 1095.
You want to soak your rice paper, but don’t overdo it or it will become soggy and disintegrate making it fragile and difficult to roll.

 1096.
You don’t need hot boiling water. Use tap water or lukewarm water to prevent it from getting too soft.

 1097.
All you need to do is take the sheet out of the rice paper, dip it in, make sure the rice paper is submerged and then take it out and lay it flat. Some like to soak it for 10-15 seconds, but you may need to experiment for the best timing.

 1098.
To avoid trouble wrapping up your Vietnamese spring roll, use paper with tapioca rather than 100% rice.

 1099.

 1117.
Vietnamese fried spring roll recipe & directions

 1118.
Step one

 1119.
Fill a pot with lightly salted water and bring to a boil. Add your vermicelli pasta and allow it to boil. Cook it uncovered, and stir occasionally until the paste is firm, usually 3-5 minutes.

 1120.
Step two

 1121.
Fill a large bowl with warm water and dip one wrapper into the water for 2 seconds to soften. Lay the wrapper flat; place 2 shrimp halves in the center, and add some vermicelli, mint, lettuce, cilantro, and basil, leaving about 2 inches from each side uncovered.

 1122.
Fold the uncovered sides inward, then tightly roll the wrapper, beginning at the end with the lettuce. Repeat the same for other ingredients.

 1123.
Step three

 1124.
Gently pull the bottom of the wrapper up and over the lower portion of the filling. Try and keep the filling intact as you roll upward, just until they are enveloped. This step may take some practice. The more you do it, the better they will look.

 1125.
Step four

 1126.
Serve the Vietnamese spring roll and hoisin sauce mixtures.

 1127.
Pro-Tip – Rolling a spring roll is similar to rolling a burrito so if you’ve done that before, you’re going to roll it well. You can follow this simple pattern for your Vietnamese spring roll recipe to roll perfectly: dip, arrange, fold, roll.

 1128.
How to easily devein shrimp

 1129.
Here’s an easy way to remove that shrimp vein/digestive tract when making shrimp spring roll:

 1130.

 1131.
Defrost your shrimp by soaking it in warm water.

 1132.
Grab a toothpick and hold the shrimp in a light source to locate the vein.

 1133.
Locate the joint of the shrimp shell (usually lighter in color than the rest of the body).

 1134.
Move the toothpick a little below the vein and push the toothpick all the way through the shrimp.

 1135.
Gently lift the toothpick outward towards the back of the shrimp, so it breaks through the shell. Do this slowly so the vein stays intact. Then, you’ll see the vein pull out.

 1136.
Clean the toothpick and repeat the process.

 1137.

 1138.
Pro-tip – Sometimes you may miss and nothing comes out or the vein breaks. That’s fine! Just find another spot to repeat until the shrimp is clear of veins.

 1143.
After trying out the Vietnamese spring roll recipe, what dipping sauce blends perfectly with it? Here’s what you can dip your spring roll in:

 1144.
Fish sauce

 1145.
This is one of the most common types of Vietnamese spring roll dipping sauce. It is sour, sweet, salty, and full of rich flavors.

 1146.
In a bowl or measuring cup, crush together 1 garlic clove, 1 Thai chili (optional), and 1-3 tablespoons of sugar. Stir in 1 cup water, ½ lime juice, and 2 tbsp fish sauce. Mix until the sugar dissolves completely.

 1147.
Hoisin sauce

 1148.
You can keep it simple and serve your spring roll with hoisin amped up with lime, garlic, and sugar.

 1149.
For this sauce: mix together water, ½ juice of lime, 1 tbsp sugar, fish sauce, 1 clove minced garlic, and ¼ cup hoisin sauce in a small bowl until well combined.

 1150.
Peanut sauce

 1151.
This creamy and nutty sauce can be made with peanut butter.

 1152.
In a pan of medium heat, saute garlic in oil. Then, mix together 2 tbsp hoisin sauce, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp lime juice, and 1-2 tbsp water. Bring to a boil and immediately turn off the heat. Pour into a dipping sauce and allow the sauce to thicken.

 1208.
This simple but delicious dish is one particular favorite of Korean side dishes. Consisting of salty and crispy roasted seaweed, this common Korean restaurant’s menu item is a must have.

 1209.
It has a great flavor as well as a high nutritional content, and is considered the perfect companion dish for vegans or people on low-carb diets. Koreans like to eat gim gui with a cold beer, this enhances the salty flavor of the seaweed.

 1210.
Traditionally, Koreans cooked their own gim gui, but with its ease of accessibility, many Koreans opt for the store-bought version for convenience. When served with steamed rice this tasty dish adapts to a main course easily.

 1211.
Kongnamul Muchim

 1212.
Soybeans are one of the most used ingredients in Korean and Asian cuisine. Kongnamul muchim is made with seasoned soybean sprouts. To prepare the soybean sprouts, they are cooked minimally to retain their firmness and crispy to the bite.

 1226.
Like many Korean side dishes, kongnamul muchim can be used as a topping for other dishes like the bibimbap.

 1227.
Stir-Fried Octopus

 1228.
Korean cuisine often includes seafood in its recipes, and this Korean side dish it’s no exception. Stir-fried octopus is just as it sounds, but it is anything but simple in flavor.

 1229.
A classic side dish in Korea, octopus is sliced then stir-fried along with a combination of ginger, gochujang chili paste, garlic, onions, cucumbers, chile peppers, and other vegetables.

 1230.
Stir-fried octopus is often served in its sauce, with roasted sesame seeds on top. It is one of the favorites to eat with stews or soups.

 1231.
Kimchi

 1232.
Kimchi may be considered one of the most popular Korean side dishes. Kimchi is another dish that has gained in popularity with Korean restaurants in the US.

 1233.
This dish fits well with almost any Korean dish. Whether it’s salty, spicy, sweet, sour, or a mix of all, Kimchi is bold and delicious. It is prepared with sliced cabbage and vegetables, which are marinated along with salty fish paste, ginger, garlic, sugar, leeks, and hot chili peppers.

 1234.
Although Kimchi is starting to gain recognition in western countries, the origin of Kimchi dates back two thousand years, as evidenced in written historical Korean documents. Historically, kimchi was soaked in brine and left fermenting for days. Later, people began adding other seasonings to the ingredients.

 1236.

Korean BBQ Side Dishes You Must Have

 1237.
When it comes to delicious Korean cuisine, Korean BBQ side dishes are probably one of the first that come to mind. Korean side dishes like the ones below are some of the most popular among Koreans and those in the western countries alike.

 1238.
Korean Green Salad

 1239.
This Korean green salad is the perfect companion for any full-protein Korean main dish. As the name implies it is made of mixed greens.

 1240.
You can use lettuce, baby spinach, and arugula, however, other ingredients like cucumber, apples, and purple onions add another flavor layer to the salad.

 1241.
However, the real secret of this salad is the sweet and spicy Korean dressing. With its soy sauce base, the Korean green salad dressing brings all the flavors together.

 1242.
And since it is light and healthy it is probably one of the most versatile of the Korean BBq side dishes.

 1243.
Spicy Korean Coleslaw

 1244.
If you’re looking for a bolder side dish option, you will love spicy Korean coleslaw. Similar to the Americanized version of coleslaw, you’ll find plenty of cabbage as the base.

 1245.
This full-of-flavor salad is prepared with Gochugaru, rice vinegar, Korean fish, and sesame oil. Its flavor is predominantly spicy, but it also has sweet and tangy flavor layers as well.

 1246.
This is one of the most prepared Korean BBQ side dishes, due to its versatility and combination of flavors, it can be combined with any BBQ Korean dish. Such as Korean tacos or burgers.

 1247.
Baek Kimchi (Non-Spicy White Kimchi)

 1248.
White kimchi is the non-spicy version of regular kimchi. It is the preferred kimchi for those with sensitive palates like kids and non-spicy food lovers.

 1249.
One of the biggest differences between red kimchi (spicy) and white kimchi (non-spicy) is that white kimchi doesn’t use red hot chili flakes. Instead, it is soaked in a fruity salty brine.

 1250.
White kimchi usually includes fish sauce to enhance all the flavors. Pine nuts, chestnuts, and even dried jujubes are sometimes added to elevate the kimchi flavors even more.

 1251.
As one of the most popular Korean BBQ side dishes, this refreshing side dish fits perfectly with almost any Korean grilled BBQ main dish.

 1258.
Appetizers are an essential part of the dining experience, as they are the introduction to the main course. Appetizers set the tone and prepare our palates for what is to come. In Korea, appetizers are no different. Koreans have several much-loved appetizers that have transcended the globe.

 1259.
Below are some of the best Korean appetizers.

 1260.
Bindaetteok (mung bean pancake)

 1261.
This Korean pancake is one of the most popular appetizers in Korea. It is a Korean pancake that is prepared with mung bean flour.

 1262.
Dried mung beans are the base of these pancakes. They are ground into a slurry mung bean pancake mixture or turned into a mung bean flour mix.

 1263.
Chopped kimchi, bean sprouts, minced pork, and a variety of seasonings are then added to the mung bean pancake batter. These ingredients give it a savory and nutty taste. The batter is then cooked in a hot pan, where they are served with pickled onions, kimchi, or Korean pancake sauce.

 1264.
Kelp Noodles

 1265.
The kelp noodles (or cheonsachae) are semi-transparent noodles made from sea tangle or edible kelp. They are also known as angel noodles.

 1266.
Since they are made without any added grain flour or starch, they are a perfect vegan and gluten-free alternative.

 1267.
Kelp noodles are also a low-carb dining option for people on low-carb diets. And due to their texture they can be eaten either cooked or raw. Like cooked pasta, they take on the flavor of whatever you add, like sauces or seasonings.

 1268.
When presented as one of the many Korean side dishes you may see them in salads or as part of the main course.

 1269.
Hobak Jeon (Pan Fried Korean Zucchini)

 1270.
Another delicious Korean appetizer, Hobak Jeon, is probably more well-known worldwide as Pan Fried Korean Zucchini.

 1271.
Made with thinly sliced zucchini and mildly seasoned with salt and pepper. As the name “pan fried” suggests it is then covered with flour and soaked in an egg wash before deep-frying it.

 1272.
Even though you can prepare Hobak Jeon any time of the year, summer is the perfect time to prepare this dish. It is commonly served with a Korean dipping sauce and enjoyed on its own.

 1277.
Asian cuisine has several differences when compared with western food preparations. Korean cuisine is known for its colored and strong flavor dishes, the wide use of vegetables, and its spicy presence in most preparations.

 1278.
Korean side dishes, also known as banchan, is a companion for almost all meals. Korean diners have come to expect a side dish to be served along with their main entrees.

 1279.
In Korea, whether you’re having a sweet, or spicy meal, you’ll likely get a banchan served along with it. Fortunately, for restaurant diners this means that almost all side dishes or banchan are free. In some cases, you can ask for an unlimited free refill of any of your side dishes.

 1280.
When western travelers dine at a Korean restaurant, they are often surprised to discover that some main courses include up to ten different side dishes – all as part of their order.

 1281.
The most common banchan is Kimchi. Due to its historical background, almost all Korean restaurants offer Kimchi as a side dish.

 1282.
However, there are hundreds of side dishes you can choose from when trying Korean Food. Like Tteokbokki and Ganjang Gejang, which are Korean side dishes, mostly served at more high-end restaurants.

 1286.

Easy Korean Recipes You Can Create at Home

 1287.
Korean cuisine is one of the healthiest and most delicious cuisines in the world. Its wide use of vegetables and seasonings make these dishes some of the preferred dining options. If you want to prepare tasty Korean dishes at home, keep reading to learn how.

 1288.
Bibimbap

 1289.
This is one of the most famous Korean dishes worldwide. It is also the preferred and beloved dish for Koreans as well. Even if you haven’t gone to a Korean restaurant specifically, if you have had Asian food, you probably have had bibimbap(see bibimbap sauce for related information) at least once in your life.

 1290.
Its name means “mixed rice with meat and assorted vegetables“. Bibimbap is a very versatile dish that allows you to make several variations from it, depending on your preference and diet.

 1291.
You can easily add or remove any ingredient, which means there are quite a lot of variations among chefs. Some restaurants serve a vegetarian or vegan version.

 1292.
Bibimbap is most often prepared with rice, meat, and vegetables. The more traditional recipe is made with raw meat and raw egg yolk. However, most western diners choose to have cooked ingredients.

 1293.
To prepare bibimbap at home, you will need your preferred cut of beef, soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil, spinach, bean sprouts, shiitake, carrots, seaweed, and eggs as a topping. With these ingredients, you can prepare a delicious homemade version of the authentic Korean bibimbap.

 1294.
Kimchi Fried Tuna Rice

 1295.
Not surprising, rice is an important part of Asian cuisine. The same is true for Koreans. Probably the most popular version is fried rice.

 1296.
Fried rice is an easy and delicious meal as it can be prepared with ingredients most people have available at home.

 1297.
From protein to vegetables, and toppings, you are free to prepare your version of fried rice. The most common combinations are kimchi and bacon, kimchi and tuna, or anything with kimchi.

 1298.
One way to prepare kimchi fried tuna rice is with canned tuna, aged kimchi, soy sauce, gochujang, and sesame oil as the base of the dish. This tuna kimchi fried rice version has a lighter flavor and it’s the healthiest option when compared with the bacon or spam version.

 1299.
However, just about any version of kimchi fried rice is full of delicious umami flavor sauce that makes it a tasty dish.

 1300.
Korean Soft Tofu Stew or Sundubu Jigae

 1301.
Korean soft tofu stew, or sundubu jjigae, is one of the most popular Korean recipes, due to its spicy flavor.

 1302.
Full of your typical Asian ingredients like soy sauce, pork, and kimchi, this Koren stew is a must-try when attempting Korean dishes prepared at home.

 1303.
One of the things we love about this dish is that you can easily prepare it with a few key ingredients. Like American stews, you’ll need to prepare a stew base, and then you can experiment with some of the remaining ingredients.

 1304.
Korean soft tofu stew can be prepared in a small stockpot, or if you have a traditional Korean earthenware pot known as ttukbaegi. The ttukbaegi can be placed directly over the burner or an open fire.

 1305.
To prepare sundubu jjigae at home in the traditional style, you will need dried anchovies, daikon radish slices, dried kelp, dried shiitake mushrooms, garlic, onions, pork belly, kimchi, salt, sugar, Korean chili flakes (gochugaru), sesame oil, silken tofu, and scallions as a topping.

 1306.
Beef Bulgogi Bowl

 1307.
Bowls recipes have gained popularity in the western countries in the last decade. The Korean beef bulgogi bowl is a delicious beef bowl that you can prepare easily at home.

 1308.
This tasty rice bowl is topped with juicy, tasty pieces of bulgogi, also known as steak, along with a variety of Korean seasonings and extras.

 1309.
The seasoning is what gives it the extra special flavor that people crave. Some versions of this dish use lettuce leaves instead of a bowl when serving.

 1310.
This easy recipe is versatile and delicious. You can easily substitute proteins and vegetables to suit your tastes. The key is to have fluffy white rice as the base for the flavorful slices of bulgogi, and all your favorite Korean toppings.

 1311.
Traditionally, you would prepare this recipe with these ingredients: beef, kimchi, peppers, garlic, ssamjang sauce, pear, onion, ginger, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, scallions, carrots, and Shishito peppers.

 1312.
Korean food is a wonderful Asian cuisine variety that continues to grow in popularity from year to year. As more westerners discover the exciting flavors of bibimbap, bulgogi, and kimchi, we see more and more diners request these dishes.

 1360.
By definition, it is “a Japanese dish of meat or fish that is grilled or boiled after being soaked in soy sauce marinade.”

 1361.
If you take a look into history, you’ll discover that teriyaki is a cooking method that dates back to the 17th century in Japan. It’s a common method of marinating fish in sauce and then grilling it.

 1362.
This sweet & dark sauce crept its way into the hearts of many Americans and became an Asian foodie’s favorite.

 1363.
And it’s worth the hype!

 1364.
You may be surprised, but teriyaki didn’t originate in Japan. The first teriyaki sauce ever was made in Hawaii by Japanese immigrants in the 1960s.

 1365.
With their unique culture, cooking techniques, and tasty flavors, they combined pineapple juice, brown sugar, and soy sauce to get a tasty teriyaki marinade.

 1366.
Today, sweet teriyaki sauce is prepared with brown sugar, cornstarch, garlic, rice wine, sake, soy sauce, and more sugar! It has become one of most loved sauces among Asian fusion food lovers.

 1367.
It not only gained popularity in the U.S but also in Japan. You can probably find teriyaki sauce in any-given strip mall, fast-food chain, store-front, and even in 5-star restaurants in Japan.

 1476.
Soy sauce is an ingredient used in making teriyaki sauce. It is made from a fermented paste of soybeans, brine, roasted grain, brine, and salt.

 1480.
Lastly, teriyaki sauce is for brushing on meats before grilling, stir-frying, dipping sauce, or as an ingredient for teriyaki meals. It can be thickened more either by boiling down or adding cornstarch and other thickening agents.

 1481.
How To Store Teriyaki Sauce

 1482.
Homemade teriyaki sauce can last up to two weeks in the refrigerator, but be mindful of herbal ingredients that can shorten shelf life.

 1483.
Homemade sauce can freeze just fine. Let it cook completely and store in an air-tight freezer container, or freeze flat in a ziplock bag.
