40.
Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva: A Review

 41.
Cigar enthusiasts are always on the lookout for new releases and unique blends to add to their collection. Recently, the Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva has been a highly anticipated cigar in the market. In this review, we will dive into the details of this cigar and see if it lives up to the hype.

 42.
Packaging

 43.

 44.
The Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva comes in a similar box style to the Cohiba Gran Reserva.

 45.
The box is exactly the same as the Cohiba Gran Reserva packaging, which is great because the plastic that was used in the previous packaging had a distinct smell that wasn’t good for the cigar.

 46.
The black on the box is a bluey grainy color, which is different from the completely black Cohiba Gran Reserva.

 47.
Each box of the Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva is numbered from 0 0 0 0 to 5000 workplace cigars.

 48.

 49.
Appearance and Construction

 50.

 51.
The actual wrapper is a lovely chocolatey brown color.

 52.
Upon opening the box, it has a chocolaty scent that’s pleasing to the nose.

 53.
The construction is fantastic, with well-packed tobacco that’s very firm.

 54.
The cigar has a pyramid shape that’s not too difficult to cut and has a perfect draw.

 55.

 56.
Flavor and Aroma

 57.

 58.
The initial taste is not overpowering and has a subtle cedar taste.

 59.
The flavor is slowly picking up, and with every puff, the aroma becomes more potent.

 60.
The cigar has a unique flavor to it, and with every puff, it develops into a refined, unique taste that’s enjoyable.

 61.
The cigar is consistent in flavor and has a subtle floral taste when smoked through the nose.

 62.
The last two and a half inches of the cigar is where the flavor really shines.

 63.

 64.
Smoking Experience

 65.

 66.
The Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva is not a powerhouse of a smoke, but it’s chilled and refined.

 67.
The cigar needs time sitting in the humidor to get used to the environment, which will enhance the flavor.

 68.
It’s essential to smoke the cigar slowly to allow the leaves to combine flavors together.

 69.
The burn is great, and the ash is fantastic, indicating that high-quality aged tobacco was used in the making of this cigar.

 70.

 71.

 72.
Firstly, let’s talk about the packaging. The Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva comes in a similar box style to the Cohiba Gran Reserva, but what caught our attention was the packaging. The box is exactly the same, which is great because the plastic that was used in the previous packaging had a distinct smell that wasn’t good for the cigar. It’s important to note that if you have any other Cohiba preservers with a plastic coating still on the packaging, it’s best to get rid of it quickly. The black on the box is a bluey grainy color, which is different from the completely black Cohiba Gran Reserva.

 73.
Each box of the Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva is numbered from 0 0 0 0 to 5000 workplace cigars. The actual wrapper is a lovely chocolatey brown color, and upon opening the box, it has a chocolaty scent that’s pleasing to the nose. The construction is fantastic, with well-packed tobacco that’s very firm. The cigar has a pyramid shape that’s not too difficult to cut and has a perfect draw. The initial taste is not overpowering and has a subtle cedar taste. As we smoke the cigar, the flavor develops, and we can taste the actual tobacco from inside. It has an earthy taste to it that’s not grassy at all, which some Montecristos tend to have.

 74.
Upon lighting up the cigar, we can smell the rich aroma, and taking a few puffs through the nose, we can detect a slight ammonia scent, but not overpowering. The flavor is slowly picking up, and with every puff, the aroma becomes more potent. The burn is great, and the ash is fantastic, indicating that high-quality aged tobacco was used in the making of this cigar. The cigar has a unique flavor to it, and with every puff, it develops into a refined, unique taste that’s enjoyable.

 75.
The Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva is not a powerhouse of a smoke, but it’s chilled and refined. The cigar needs time sitting in the humidor to get used to the environment, which will enhance the flavor. The cigar has a consistent flavor and is developing slowly. It’s essential to smoke the cigar slowly to allow the leaves to combine flavors together and not smoke it too fast, as it won’t give the cigar a chance to develop.

 76.
In summary, the Montecristos Reserve Gran Reserva is a fantastic cigar that needs time to develop. It has a unique flavor that’s refined and enjoyable. The construction is excellent, and the burn is great. The cigar is consistent in flavor and has a subtle floral taste when smoked through the nose. The last two and a half inches of the cigar is where the flavor really shines, and it’s definitely a cigar to enjoy until the very end. With only 5,000 boxes made, it’s worth collecting and putting away, as it’s not going to be sitting around for long. Overall, a great cigar that’s definitely worth trying.

 89. Cohiba cigars have grown over the years. Before it became a status symbol and attained global fame, it was a brand reserved only for one man: Fidel Castro. Now, when luxury brands are being recounted, such as Lamborghinis and Ferraris, one cannot simply leave out the Cohiba. The famed cigar does not just complete the list; it meets up with expectations.

 90.
The Cohibas are usually easily identified during the blind tastings at Cigar Aficionado to show how popular the cigar is. It has also been rewarded for its excellence, as the Cohiba product, the Cohiba Behike BHK 52, clinched the Cigar of the Year back in 2010. The Cohiba could pass for a Cuban trademark since it has become synonymous with the Latin American nation.

 91.
For you to see, let alone hold a Cohiba would be a rare privilege, as the pricey stages are not easy to come by. However, today, you can get this gem at a high cost in some unique places. Want to know some amazing things about this luxurious cigar? Keep reading to find out.

 92.
The word ‘Cohiba ‘ denotes tobacco.
93. The melodious word could be mistaken for Spanish but is Taino for tobacco. Taino is the language spoken by The Arawak people, the original natives of Cuba before Spain colonized it.

 94.
It is not as old as other brands.
95. Made in 1966 for Cuban ruler Fidel Castro, the Cohiba has a different timeline than other Cuban cigar brands, as it was not created before the Cuban revolution. It is relatively new when you compare it to other brands, as most of them were made in the Old Havana time. All most all Cuban cigar brands have one thing in common: private individuals first owned them before being commercialized.

 96.
The Cohiba was never planned.
97. You might think that someone or a group of people sat down to formulate the Cohiba, but history tells a different tale. It is said that Castro, acting on impulse, took a smoke from his bodyguard cigar and immediately loved it. He began to demand it more often than he did for others, and soon, it became his favorite.

 98.
Cohibas were not easily accessible.
99. Years back, no matter the amount of money you were willing to offer, you could not get your hands on an original Cohiba. These cigars were solely given out as gifts to Castro’s people who should partake of his cigar beauty, from world leaders to important personalities. It was only available as a 7.5-inch cigar with a 38 ring gauge.

 100.
You could now get yourself one.
101. Previously unavailable to the public, the Cohiba was now commercialized in 1982 and was packed into three different sizes, but could only be gotten from one country in the world: Spain. The three sizes were known as Laguitos: Laguito No.1 being a Lancero Corona Especial being the name for Laguito No.2, and Panetela being Laguito No. 3. Larger cigars weren’t readily available until 1989 when Cohiba entered the international market. This new range of cigars comprised of the diminutive Exquisito, the Robusto, and the Churchill-sized Esplendido.

 102.
It appears in four different lines.
103. Linea Classica, the Maduro Line, Bikes, and the Siglo series, are the four existing lines of the famous cigar brands. While The Linea Classica is mainline, the award-winning Behikes are the most costly of the four, deemed the best of the best.

 104.
The Siglo series was made to replace Davidoff.
105. The Cohiba Siglo series was created in 1992 to replace the Davidoff brand when it relocated to the Dominican Republic. The Linea 1942, as it is also called, came in previous Davidoff sizes.

 106.
Its main factory is in El Laguito.
107. A huge, yellow edifice located on Miramar, called El Laguito, houses the famous Cohiba cigars. Alberto Casimiro Fowler originally built the beautiful house, before its conversion into the factory it is today, although there are other factories.

 108.
Cohiba plantations are a well-kept secret.
109. The tobacco used to make Cohibas are, of course, very high grade, so only a few plantations can meet up with the quality. Although a lot of people would like to gloat that they produce tobacco for Cohiba, the truth is that the exact farms that produce the tobacco are not public knowledge, with only Habanos and its employees knowing the exact answers to which Pinar del Río farms supply them.

 110.
The name ‘Cohiba’ is involved in a legal battle.
111. In the 80s, when a company General Cigar, began the sale of Dominican Cohibas to members of the American public, a dispute on the ownership of the name Cohiba started. Since then, there have all kinds of legal drama, from hearings to appeals and lawsuit after lawsuit concerning the name for many years now. The lawsuit, dubbed Empresa Cubana del Tabaco v. Culbro Corp, proves to be a hard nut to crack in the court of law as there is no agreement as to whether the trademark name should apply to a country under a US embargo.

 112.
It is the singular commercial Cuban cigar with a 60 ring gauge.
113. The Cohiba holds the record for being the only commercial cigar to come in a 60 ring gauge. These rare cigars was launched during the brand’s 50th-anniversary celebration. It did not come alone but was placed in an exquisite humidor, which contained 50 cigars of the special anniversary, each being 7 inches long, with the rare 60 ring gauge. The humidor did not come cheap as it sold for a price that ran into a hundred thousand dollars. Robusto Supremo, another rare Cohiba line launched in 2014, almost broke the record, with a 58 ring gauge.

 114.
It is the most expensive cigar brand in Cuba.
115. The Cohibas are the most highly-priced brand in Cuba and one of the most expensive in the world. In Canada, they sell for about 70 Canadian dollars or 52 American dollars. If you think that is pricey, the rare Behike line retails for $100.

However, it was later known that the brand had since existed since 1966 and that it had only been kept for the President of Cuba’s personal use.

 128.
It is said that a Prince then, named “Charles” usually gets some Cohibas from the ones the President of Cuba used to send to the House of Windsor. The Prince, however, does not smoke and so would always give out the special Cigars to someone named “Jimmy”. Jimmy would then give some out to someone again, who would also give some out to some other people. This was how few people still got little access to Cohiba Behike Cigars even though it was very scarce then.

 129.
Cohiba is said to be the name given to a roll of dry leaves amongst the people of Cuba; so to them, all cigars are Cohiba. The brand came to life when Eduardo Rivera, a cigar roller would always roll up some cigars for himself after work and would then share it with his friend who was a bodyguard to Fidel Castro. One way or the other, Castro received the Cigar from Rivera’s friend- who was his bodyguard, and because he so much liked the Cigar, He established a unique factory in a suburb of Havana. This Suburb was known as El Laguito (The Little Lake).

 130.
Due to a lot of suspected attacks on Fidel Castro, the suburb where Cohiba was produced- El Laguito, was made a very conserved and secretive location where only a few people knew about. Some of the best Cigar Rollers at that time were then placed at the factory to be able to continue the production of safe and reliable Cigars for the President since there were already suspecting a planned attack on the president.

 131.
The name “Cohiba” was chosen for the brand by Celia Sanchez. Celia Sanchez was Castro’s best confidant and she also talked him into making the factory a school for female cigar Rollers. El Laguito, hence, became the first school to ever train female cigar rollers and to date, most of the cigars from the factory are rolled by females.

 132.
In 1982, three sizes of the brand were released to the public. These three sizes are called Laguito Nos. 1, 2, 3 in the factory and they are regarded as Lancero, Coronas Especial, Panetela (they were all medium to full-flavored), to the public. The factory released three more sizes in 1992, the three were medium to full-flavored. The three sizes are Esplendido, Robusto, Exquisito. They were used to complete the present Linea Clasica which also means Classic Line.

 133.
Another five sizes were added in 1992. They were Siglos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (Linea 1492). They were of medium flavor and in 2002, an additional size- the phenomenal Siglo VI was launched.

 134.
In 2002, three other cigars were added and they hard dark wrappers. They were medium to full-flavored and they were named; Cohiba Maduro 5. Another three were later added to it and these three were of very unique, unmatched, and flavored taste. It was named Behike.

 135.
Behike is said to be gotten from the Indians and according to the Indians, Behike means a person who organizes or mans a ritual. He can be a Priest or Herbalist. This name displays the leadership trait of the Cigar because it happens to be leading other cigars with its taste and Aroma. Habanos S.A., however, produced a substitute to Behike and they are in the sizes BHk 52 (Cohiba Behike 52), BHK 54 (Cohiba Behike 54), and BHK 56. (Cohiba Behike 56) Accidentally, they beat the factory names Laguito Nos. 4, Nos. 5, and Nos. 6. These numbers point to the ring gauges and it indicates the fact that three robust new sizes are waiting to be launched.

 163.

 164.
Habanos seems to be unique with producing fat and stout cigars overtime as it started with a 50 ring gauge being the largest previously- that is the likes of Robusto. Then it went on to produce the 52 ring gauge- which is the Siglo VI, after which it has now recently topped its’ production with the new sizes 54 and 56 gauge. This introduction in the sizes is a great innovation in the BHKs because it gives them the room to take in Medio Tiempo, which is the additional fourth kind of leaf in the mixture of the filler.

 165.
The Medio Tiempo, which is grouped as Fortaleza Cuatro, Strength 4, is a leaf that is extremely rare and is gotten from the two topmost leaves on the full-grown tobacco plants. Because it is not every plant that produces those leaves, the production of Cohiba Behikes is very limited and it’s availability is based on how skillful and dedicated the farmers are. The state of the climate while it is being grown, is also a high determining factor.

 166.
Though Medio Tiempo is rare and not easily available, when it is eventually available, the high level of its richness and aroma gives so much satisfaction that Cohiba Behikes are regarded as the peak of Habano’s display of flavor and richness.

 330. It was the first time that Miquel Barnet, President of the Fernando Ortz Foundation and Vice President of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), appeared at the Habano Festival as part of the International Seminar. During his master conference, he discussed the connection between Havana, Cuba, and the San Cristóbal de la Habana brand.

 331.
The History of Tobacco in Cuba

 332.
During the discovery of Cuba, chroniclers provided him with accounts of the island’s discovery. According to these historical accounts, Europeans were not able to appreciate the value of tobacco when they were first exposed to it. Initially, tobacco was associated with native healing rites and religious beliefs. Inhaling leaf smoke lost its mythical and religious properties after aboriginal cultures and mythologies were destroyed. Europeans eventually began smoking due to this shift in the cultural significance of tobacco.

 333.

 334.
The First Tobacco Smoker in Europe

 335.
According to Barnet, the first tobacco smoker in Europe was a crew member from Columbus’ first voyage. This crew member brought some smoking tobacco samples to show his family and friends. As a result of his recklessness, he was accused of being possessed by the Devil by the Holy Inquisition.

 336.
The Significance of Tobacco in Cuba’s Culture and Economy

 337.
The story of the first tobacco smoker in Europe reveals the significant role tobacco played in shaping cultural and social practices around the world. According to Barnet, the discovery of tobacco and the eventual incorporation of smoking into European culture has had both positive and negative profound effects on the world. Cuba’s economy has been heavily dependent on tobacco cultivation and cigar production for many years. Symbolizing Cuba’s rich cultural heritage, it has become an integral part of the Cuban identity.

 338.
The Habano Festival

 339.
Since 1999, the Habano Festival has attracted cigar enthusiasts and experts from around the world. Cuban cigars are celebrated here, bringing together tobacco growers, cigar makers, and aficionados to share knowledge and experience. In addition to seminars, cigar tastings, and visits to tobacco plantations and cigar factories, the festival includes a series of events.

 340.
Conclusion

 341.
A master conference delivered by Miquel Barnet at the International Seminar during the Habano Festival offered valuable insights into tobacco’s history and cultural significance in Cuba. In Cuba, tobacco and cigars have shaped the country’s identity and economy for centuries. The Habano Festival is an essential event that celebrates this cultural heritage and brings cigar enthusiasts from around the world together.
