<p>Smartphones also link us to stress-inducing tasks like work emails, medical appointments, and unwelcome calls. This constant connectivity can amplify stress by influencing our autonomic nervous system and heart health.</p>
<p>Even if smartphones don’t always feel stressful, taking a break can benefit our parasympathetic nervous system. A smartphone detox doesn’t need to be an all-or-nothing approach. Consider these strategies:</p>

<li>Disable all notifications</li>
<li>Limit or remove apps that cause stress</li>
<li>Designate specific days to avoid smartphone use</li>
<li>Refrain from using your smartphone during the first and last hours of the day</li>
<li>Use blue light blocking glasses or enable “night mode” on your device to reduce blue light exposure in the evening</li>
</ul>
<p>If you need your smartphone for work, establish clear office hours and adhere to them. Implementing a block schedule can help prioritize your tasks and maintain boundaries. </p>

<p>Interestingly, even reading about yawning or witnessing others yawn can trigger the response. I’ve caught myself yawning a few times just while writing this! </p>

I personally enjoy taking stretching breaks throughout the day, especially when working at the computer.</p>

<p>Another straightforward way to begin meditating is through deep breathing. Find a quiet spot to either sit or lie down comfortably. Then, direct your attention to your breath. If your thoughts begin to drift, gently redirect your focus back to your breathing. Deep breathing is often enhanced by integrating it with a yoga practice.</p>
<p>Incorporating mindfulness meditation into your daily life can be quite straightforward. Simply focus all your attention on a task you’re engaged in, such as brewing tea or shelling peas. Even mundane activities like folding laundry can be an opportunity to center your thoughts. The key is to ensure that you won’t be disturbed during this time.</p>
<p>Additionally, mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thought patterns. Dr. Amen refers to these as “ANTs,” or Automatic Negative Thoughts. <p>Before I started incorporating real foods into my diet, fermented items like sauerkraut and kombucha were completely off my radar. Their strong flavors and odors were a turn-off, and I had no interest in them. I stuck with my bland carbohydrates instead.</p>
<p>Years later, I began to develop a taste for these fermented foods and even found myself craving them occasionally. Initially hesitant to try making them myself, I eventually mustered the courage after learning about their significant health benefits. <p>Now that I’ve embraced them, I wouldn’t go back. I’ve come to appreciate the numerous health benefits of fermented foods and even include kimchi in my regular diet!</p>

<p>Fermented foods undergo a process called lacto-fermentation, where natural bacteria consume the sugars and starches in the food, producing lactic acid.
