27.

  28.
They say that good pitching beats good hitting, though Indiana lead-off man Devin Taylor proved that theory wrong on a 2-2 pitch from Brett Sears that he sent over the leftfield wall to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 before a lot of the fans had found their seats.

  29.

  30.
After Sears gave up a lead-off single in the second, he settled in and retired the next six batters in a row, including two strikeouts. In the meantime, Nebraska bats started to come alive in the bottom of the second with a couple of hits, but then couldn’t get one past third baseman Josh Pyne to score a run.

  31.

  32.
In the bottom of the third, Joshua Overbeek put the barrel on one that shot up the middle to start things off for the Big Red. Cayden Brumbaugh, who returned to the lineup for this first time since injuring his wrist against Iowa, moved him to second with a well-placed bunt. However, Case Sanderson was totally fooled by breaking pitches from starter Ty Bothwell, striking out for the second time in the game, and then Josh Caron flew out to centerfield, leaving another runner stranded on base.

  33.

  34.
Sears struggled in the top of the fourth inning, hitting Nick Mitchell on a 2-2 count and then having to throw eleven pitches to strikeout Tyler Cerny. Then designated hitter Joey Brenczewski slapped a ground ball right at first baseman Ben Columbus who fumbled it, allowing the runner to reach base on an error. Mitchell ended up on third, and then scored a couple of pitches later on a deep fly to right by Brock Tibbitts. Going to the bottom of the fourth, Indiana was up 2-0.

  35.

  36.
For the third straight inning, Nebraska got their lead-off man on base. This time it was Ben Columbus who got plunked by Bothwell. He was forced out at second on a Cole Evans ground ball back to the pitcher. However, Evans hustled down the baseline to prevent the double-play, bringing up Gabe Swansen. Looking for his second hit of the game, the Johnston, Iowa native smoke a sinking line drive to left that Devin Taylor caught off his shoe-tops.

  37.

  38.
That brought up Dylan Carey who drove a deep flyball over the head of Taylor in left. Third base coach Lance Harvell cranked up his right-arm windmill sending Evans home. However, Taylor threw a dart to shortstop Tyler Cerny, who fired a strike home to get Evans out relatively easy.

  39.

  40.
Sears sat the Hoosiers down in order in the top of the fifth and his teammates finally put a number up on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Brumbaugh worked a walk and moved to second on a nice single to rightfield by Sanderson. Caron then smoked a single through the right side to score Brumbaugh and chase Bothwell. Hoosier head coach Jeff Mercer brought in big righthander Brayden Risedorph, who put out the fire with a Ben Columbus groundout to short. Going to the sixth inning, Indiana held a 2-1 lead over Nebraska.

  41.

  46.
  47.

  48.
Sears worked through a “stick-out-your-bat-double-against-the-shift” by Nick Mitchell in the top of the sixth to keep the Big Red within one of the Hoosiers.

  49.

  50.
Cole Evans started off the Cornhusker sixth with a walk, bringing up pinch-hitter Tyler Stone. The lefty transfer from Iowa Western has slumped a bit lately and unfortunately struck out on a breaking pitch down and in. Evans moved to second during Dylan Carey’s at-bat on a balk by Risedorph, but the righthander reached back and got his second strikeout of the inning. Up came Riley Silva, who battled Risedorph for a walk on nine pitches after being down 0-2 in the count.

  51.

  52.
Evans made his way to third on a wild pitch and now the Cornhuskers had runners on the corners with Overbeek stepping into the box on the left side of the plate, the side where he has five home run blasts this season. Tonight, the mighty Joshua struck out on a 97-mph fastball. The score remained 2-1 Hoosiers.

  53.

  54.
With the Cornhusker bullpen starting to loosen up, Brett Sears came out for the seventh inning. As he has throughout the season, the fella from Westphalia, Iowa put the team on his back. Proof of his competitiveness was the third out of the inning when due to a defensive shift to the right side of the diamond, he sprinted from the mound almost all the way to the Nebraska dugout to catch a fly ball to end the inning. He was not going to go down without a fight.

  55.

  56.
With your pitcher is leaving it all on the field, the team rallied behind him after the seventh inning stretch. With one out, Sanderson worked a walk in front of team RBI leader Josh Caron. When you have a pitcher really bringing it, the ball will go a long way when you meet it with the barrel of the bat. Caron did just that, sending the ball over the wall in centerfield to give Nebraska its first lead of the game. The two-run blast made it 3-2 Cornhuskers.

  60.

  61.
  62.
  63.

  64.
Jalen Worthley took the mound in the eighth, along defensive substitutes Garrett Anglim in leftfield and Rhett Stokes at second base, hoping to keep Nebraska in the lead. Jasen Oliver had something to say about that through, smashing his fifth home run of the season to tie it up at three all. Worthley couldn’t place his pitches where he wanted and gave way to Bobby Olsen after getting a couple of outs, but giving up a single and hitting Cerny to leave two runners on base with two outs.

  65.

  66.
Olsen promptly hit Brenczewski to load the bases. Fate was then on the side of the Big Red as Brock Tibbitts smack a fastball back at Olsen that skipped off the rubber right to Rhett Stokes, who stepped on second for a force of Cerny.

  67.

  68.
Tyler Stone led off the eighth as he has a number of times this season, driving a ball with two strikes to leftfield against the shift. Clay Bradford came in to run for Stone and advanced to second on a Dylan Carey single. Silva then moved both of them ahead 90-feet with a beautiful sacrifice bunt.

  69.

  70.
Indiana pulled their infield in with one out. Overbeek smacked a ground ball to the second baseman who fired home as Bradford broke when the ball was hit. He somehow avoided the tag on his sweeping head-first slide, which was confirmed on a challenge by Indiana. Rhett Stokes then hit a fly ball in foul territory not too deep down the first base line, which was caught by Mitchell on the run. However, he could not get turned around to make a throw to the plate to get Carey who had tagged up at third.

  71.

  72.
Nebraska would have added another run had it not been for an incredible grab of a line drive off the bat of Garrett Anglim. Going to the ninth inning, Nebraska was back in front 5-3.

  73.

  74.
In came Kyle Perry, and at that point the nightmare from Wednesday night returned. The Nebraska bullpen absolutely imploded as Indiana scored seven runs on six hits along with another Nebraska error. Compounding the frustration and disappointment was that it all happened against three pitchers, along with Worthley who struggled in the eighth inning, who are considered to be the top arms out of the pen. Besides Perry, Kyle Froehlich and Casey Daiss contributed to the mess.

  75.

  76.

  77.
How about a 7️⃣-run 9th inning?

Relive @IndianaBase's outburst in the final frame to rally for the win at Nebraska. #B1GBaseball pic.twitter.com/09xnfDNJwc
— Big Ten Baseball (@B1Gbaseball) May 11, 2024
  78.

  79.
  80.
  81.

  82.
With Indiana batting around, Daiss finally ended the disaster striking out pinch hitter Cal Sefcik. Nebraska had fallen behind 10-5.

  83.

  84.
With many of the fans working their way to the parking lot, Jacob Vogel came on to pitch for Indiana in the ninth and sat down the heart of the Cornhusker order 1-2-3, striking out both Columbus and Evans looking.

  85.

  86.
Until the ninth inning, this is what a Friday night conference baseball game should be like. What happened after Nebraska took the lead in the eighth is incredibly concerning. The bullpen is reeling right now and since the top relievers were all used tonight, one has to be concerned about tomorrow’s game. Indiana was very aggressive at the plate and put the bat on the ball. Based on what they have done all season, they will most likely do the same tomorrow.

  87.

  88.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow in an unusual Saturday night game with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Mason McConnaughey will face off against Indiana’s top pitcher, Conor Foley.

  89.

  90.

  91.
Notes:

  92.
· Brett Sears did not factor in the decision tonight for the first time in a number of weeks. His final line was seven innings pitched giving up two runs on three hits. He had seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter. His ERA has dropped to 2.11 to lead the Big Ten Conference.

  93.
· On one of the nicest nights of the season – a nearly perfect evening for baseball – 6573 fans came out for the game. They were really into the game, particularly when the team gave them something to cheer about in the seventh and eighth innings.

  94.
· Indiana played their outfield shallower than any team at Haymarket Park thus far this season. Nebraska made them pay for it a few times, but for the most part it was effective in terms of keeping Cornhusker runners from taking an extra base.

  95.
· The streak is over for the cream uniforms as Nebraska suffered their first loss wearing them this season. Blame it on the black uniform hang over. Note that Nebraska was beaten when wearing black on Sunday at Minnesota and has not won since.

  117.
HUSKERS SOFTBALL Big 10 Tourney Recap: Indiana 9 Huskers 5

  121.
  122.
What started as a beautiful day, ended in a season’s conclusion.

  123.

  124.
  125.
The Huskers started where they left off but solid Indiana pitching slowed their bats and warrior Sarah Harness finally hit the wall.

A 6-run Indiana 8th inning proved too much to overcome and the Husker run is over by a score of 9-5.

  126.
The Huskers had jumped to a 3-0 lead after the 2nd powered by leadoff home runs in both innings. The 1st was a tape-measure shot by Billie Andrews which rivaled her bomb yesterday afternoon against Minnesota. The 2nd was struck almost as hard by Ava Bredwell but much lower - it took off on a straight line to center field but never seemed to come down.

  127.
Unfortunately, the bats were mostly silenced after that by Sophie Kleiman who came on in relief of Briana Copeland who gave up the runs. Several balls were hit hard but right at Hoosier defenders as the Huskers tried to get things going. On the other side, Indiana’s small ball game proved to be like stopping a swarm of gnats.

  128.
The Hoosiers fought back with some speed and small ball and scored a run in each of the 4th and 5th innings. Still the Huskers took a 3-2 lead into the top of the 7th and seemed to be on their way to Saturday when Sarah Harness grooved an 0-2 pitch on the outside for strike three on Alex Cooper to start the inning. I’d say shockingly, but after seeing it in Ann Arbor and again against Northwestern, this kind of surgical incompetence is just becoming basic operating procedure. Of course Cooper knocked one out two pitches later, so fate could bust our jaw one as well - Indiana being a speed team - but it was her 7th of the season.

  129.
It only tied the game, but the Huskers would have preferred the bases empty and one out.

  130.
All that being said, Indiana just swung and ran wild in the 8th inning and will prove to be a handful for the Michigan-Wisconsin winner tomorrow. I won’t relive the 8th again, so here’s a pic:

  131.

  132.
  133.

  134.
Due to lingering injuries to Emmerson Cope and Kaylin Kinney, it was basically ride-or-die time with Harness, who it was hoped could re-create her magic when she pitched Southern Illinois to a Missouri Valley Conference title going the distance in three straight games.

  135.
It wasn’t meant to be today but watching her throw all but a few innings of the last five games left a memory of stamina and determination Huskers softball fans won’t soon forget.

  136.

  137.
The Huskers needed a win here which was basically being called a NCAA-edge-of-the-bubble elimination game, so it is highly likely the Huskers season has ended. And one look at the team and their families hugging and crying on the next field told us they believe it as well.

  138.

  139.

  167.
  168.
Congrats to two seniors, a junior and a freshman for being recognized by the conference this season. And pardon me in advance for pointing out a couple of glaring omissions.

When the Big 10 announced its all-conference teams and award winners Wednesday, Huskers honored included two seniors who nailed down nearly 40% of the B1G Player of the Week Awards in 2024, an exuberant freshman who seemed to be there every time Nebraska needed a walk-off hit and a junior honored for her sportsmanship.

  169.
Billie Andrews was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, Sydney Gray earned Second-team All-Big Ten accolades and Samantha Bland was named to the All-Freshman team while Mckinley Malecha was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

  170.

  171.
BILLIE ANDREWS

  172.
Andrews was selected as an All-Big Ten performer for the fourth straight season and is just the eighth Husker to be a four-time all-conference selection. She joins MJ Knighten as the only players in program history to be a four-time All-Big Ten honoree. Andrews was named to the All-Big Ten first team for the second straight season and for the third time in her career. Andrews joins Tristen Edwards as the only Huskers to earn three first-team All-Big Ten awards and is the 10th player overall in program history to be a three-time first-team all-conference selection.

  173.
She was recognized after batting .363 during the regular season with 61 hits, 10 doubles, 15 home runs, 51 runs, 39 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 47 games. She led Nebraska in eight offensive categories and ranked third in the Big Ten in runs and home runs, fifth in slugging and OPS, sixth in stolen bases and seventh in hits.

  178.

  179.
SYDNEY GRAY

  180.
Gray was selected to an All-Big Ten team for the first time in her career. She hit .288 during the regular season with 11 doubles, 12 home runs and a team-high 40 RBIs. During the conference season, Gray batted .351 with six doubles, five home runs and 21 RBIs in 21 games. She led the Huskers in hits, extra-base hits, doubles, home runs and RBIs in Big Ten Play. Gray was also chosen as a three-time Big Ten Player of the Week in 2024, tying the conference record for most player-of-the-week awards in a single season.

  181.
Not showing up in the numbers was her stellar defensive play at the hot corner. The diving, charging, fire-throwing plays from third base became almost commonplace while still drawing sounds of amazements from not only Huskers’ but also opposing fans.

  182.

  183.
  184.
Michigan challenged this beautiful play. And rightfully lost.

  186.

  187.
SAMANTHA BLAND

  188.
Bland was recognized as one of the top freshmen in the conference with her appointment to the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Bland hit .290 in the regular season with 47 hits, 14 doubles, six homers and 36 RBIs in 50 games. She is tied for the team lead in doubles and ranks second in RBIs. Bland not only produced at the plate, but she was a versatile player for the Big Red, starting games in left field, center field, second base and shortstop, eventually taking over the left field spot as well as spots in top four of the batting order..

  193.

  194.
MACKINLEY MALECHA

  195.
Rounding out the Husker honorees was Malecha, a team captain who was Nebraska’s recipient of a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Big 10 defines winners of this award as thus:

  196.

“The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sport-competition setting.”

  197.
Malecha has played in 28 games this season with four starts and has scored a career-high 12 runs while producing four RBIs in only 12 at bats. Off the field, Malecha was named to the 2024 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her community outreach.

  200.
AVA BREDWELL

  201.
Playing catcher at high level defensively, Bredwell took off in conference play to become one of the best hitters on a hot-hitting Husker team which relied heavily on its bats. Here were her stats and where they ranked on the team (Min 100 AB’s for % stats)

  202.
.331 BA (2nd)
7 HRs (3rd)
28 RBIs (4th)
.620 SLG (2nd)
.451 OBP (1st)
1.071 OPS (2nd)

  203.
Not including her on either the first or second team with those numbers at that position is inexcusable.

  204.

  209.
BROOKE ANDREWS

  210.
Brooke’s batting numbers, while very solid, don’t exactly jump off the page with the Jess Oaklands of the world or her sister Billie’s. But in the field, she put on a show constantly with both her glove and her arm. She grabbed home runs and brought them back in the park and gunned players down who tried to stretch their luck a little too far.

  211.
If Morgan DeBord is All Big Ten, so is Brooke.

  236.
Two teams tied for second place will settle things on Hawks Field this weekend.

Series Preview

  237.
Indiana Hoosiers (27-19-1) at Nebraska Cornhuskers (30-17)

  238.
Location: Hawks Field at Haymarket Park, Lincoln, NE

  239.
Dates: May 10-12th

  240.
Times (all CDT): Friday @ 6 pm, Saturday @ 6 pm, Sunday @ 12 pm

  241.
Head Coaches: Jeff Mercer (6th season, 246-154-1) & Will Bolt (5th season, 127-92-1)

  242.
TV/Stream: Friday: Nebraska Public Media and B1G+, Saturday and Sunday: Big Ten Network

  243.
Radio: Huskers Radio Network, Huskers.com, Huskers App

  244.
Somehow the Big Ten knocked its scheduling out of the park this year. It’s the second to last series of the season (already?!?!), and the top 6 teams in the standings are all playing each other, including Nebraska and Indiana tied in 2nd place along with Purdue, 1 game back from Illinois. Indiana is coming off an incredibly competitive series against the Boilermakers. They ended their 11 game conference win streak in game 2, and won the series coming back from down both 4-0 in the 6th inning, and 4-1 in the 9th.

  245.
Indiana has won its last 5 Big Ten series, and is looking to win all of its road series for the first time since 2014, when they were 2 outs away from Omaha, but were walked off by Stanford in the super regionals. Nebraska on the other hand hasn’t lost a weekend series at home, only suffering defeat at Rutgers.

  246.
This is the first time everyone on Indiana’s staff and roster (save for a couple inter-conference transfers) has played in Lincoln. Coach Jeff Mercer took over when Tracey Smith left for Arizona St and has been building up his team for this season. One of the best classes of the past decade in the Big Ten are now Juniors. Combine that with Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season in Devin Taylor, and one of the top recruits in the conference this year in Andrew Wiggins, and the talent on this team is as good as it gets.

  247.
Pitching Probables

  253.
  254.

  255.
Game 1: RHP Brett Sears (7-0, 2.18 ERA) vs. LHP Ty Bothwell (6-2, 5.46 ERA)

  256.
Game 2: RHP Mason McConnaughey (6-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. RHP Connor Foley (4-1, 4.53 ERA)

  257.
Game 3: TBD vs. TBD

  258.
We are in the midst of a 2-3 week stretch of Brett Sears looking mortal, and not the second coming of Shane Komine. 3 weeks of 3 earned runs or more. He was noticibly off last Friday, with his lowest percentage of strikes thrown since Big Ten play started. But, like a true ace, he powered through and kept the team in a position to win, even without his best “stuff”.

  259.
It’s looking more and more like the Maryland game was just a blip instead of a potential slide by Mason McConnaughey. Mac generally give up the fewest fly balls of the starters, and that matched up well with the Minnesota offense that like to bash the ball. He only gave up one run to the Gophers. While the other two starters gave up some home runs that hurt them, Mac was able to keep his hard hit balls in the yard, mostly working around 3 doubles.

  260.
Just as it was a good stylistic matchup for Mac, it was bad one for Will Walsh. Walsh attacks the strike zone, using different speeds to try and get guys to be off just enough to induce a lot of pop flys. That played right into the style of the Gophers. He gave up a home run and 2 doubles in just over 2 innings of work. The Sunday role will probably be down to him, Drew Christo, who came out firing in Minneapolis, or Mr. No-No, Jackson Brockett.

  261.
Indiana will turn to 6th year senior Ty Bothwell for Friday. The pitching staff as a whole has had a lot of injuries, but Bothwell has been there every week. Not their most elite arm, Bothwell has had a couple crazy starts change the look of his stats. He has 62 strikeouts in 61 innings, which is good for a starter, but a 13 K effort against Minnesota bumped that number up from the usual 4-6 Ks per start. Sandwiched around that start was a game against Penn St where he gave up 8 runs, and Rutgers with 6 runs allowed.

  262.
Saturday starter Connor Foley is one of quite a few Hoosiers returning from injury. He pitched at Purdue for the first time in 4 weeks. He didn’t go long, only 58 pitches, when he is used to going 100+. So look for him to maybe go 75-80 pitches max. Foley has a flame thrower, coming in just shy of 100 mph with his fastball, but can be wild. It’s rare he gets through a start with fewer than 4 free passes. Indiana hasn’t chosen a Sunday starter yet. They have a few guys with injuries, or recovering and will see how they stand as the weekend progresses before naming their final starter.

  263.
Scouting Report

  264.
How can a team with so many pitching injuries and one of the worst ERAs in the conference be tied for 2nd place? They can hit! They hit at a .300 clip as a team. Devin Taylor is the biggest gun. He was the conference Freshman of the Year last season and preseason Player of the Year this season. The Hoosiers were struggling at the leadoff spot, and decided to go “Moneyball” and put Taylor at leadoff two weeks ago. All he’s done is hit .462 with 7 RBIs and 9 runs scored in that time. He is up to .356 on the season and has 12 home runs and 38 RBIs.

  265.
Top freshman Andrew Wiggins has been injured and unable to play much recently. His stats when he does play are impressive. A .311 average, 1.070 OPS and 3 home runs and 12 RBIs in only 45 at bats project well over a full season. He’s just starting to pinch hit so he may be called upon in a key situation over the weekend.

  266.
C/1B Brock Tibbits just returned from injury last weekend too. He is batting .333 with 33 RBIs in 33 games this season. He is one of the trio of Juniors that made the Freshmen All-American team in 2022 and has been one of the best run producers in his time in Bloomington. One of the other triplets, 3B Josh Pyne, is batting .299 and leads the team with 20 doubles. The third of the All-Americans, OF Carter Mathison is only batting .246, getting him demoted from his normal leadoff spot, but has a Kyle Schwarber like .380 OBP. He also has a team leading 13 home runs on the year.

  267.
The bullpen boasts the only two pitchers with sub 4.50 ERAs on the team. Redshirt Freshman Jacob Vogel has made 15 appearances, and has a 0.51 ERA, with 19 strikeouts in 17 innings. Grad transfer Drew Buhr lead the bullpen with 31 innings pitched. He has a 3.51 ERA with 39 strikeouts.

  268.
The Hoosiers leave a lot to be desired on defense. 60 errors and a.964 fielding percentage is close to the bottom of the league. They have caught 16 out of 72 base stealers, so look for the usual suspects for NU to take off on the base paths.

  269.
Series History

  270.
Nebraska holds a slim 16-14-1 advantage all time against the Hoosiers. Indiana won the last series 2-1 in Bloomington in 2022. Indiana last came to Lincoln in 2018. Matt Waldron won game 1, but Indiana jumped all over NU starting pitchers Luis Alvarado and Matt Warren in games 2 and 3.

  271.
Nebraska also clinched the 2021 Big Ten Championship in Bloomington.

  272.
Husker Notes

  273.

  274.
Josh Caron was suffering from some illnesses early in the week, and only pinch hit in the SDSU debacle. It remains to be seen what his role will be this weekend.

  275.
Cayden Brumbaugh took batting practice Thursday for the first time since injuring his hand which has kept him out the past 8 games.

  276.
Freshman Case Sanderson leads the team with a .362 batting avg and has reached base in his last 19 straight games. He is 14th in the country with a .519 on base percentage.

  277.
Riley Silva has stolen 29 bases, the most at Nebraska since Jamal Strong went for 35 in 2000.

  278.
The team has stolen 81 bases on the season, the most since 85 in 2006.

  279.
Silva has also been hit by a pitch 22 times, good for 3rd all time in a season at Nebraska. Corey Miller (1996) is 2nd with 24, and the gold standard is Daniel Bruce’s 28 in 2002.

  280.
Jalen Worthley leads the bullpen with 28.1 innings and has an impressive 27 to 4 strikeout to walk ratio

  281.
Ty Stone has a .391 batting average and 1.105 OPS at home this season, both number 1 on the team.

  282.

  283.
Your friendly, neighborhood baseball writer has to miss this entire series, but check out this forecast after what we’ve had to deal with recently. No better time to get out to the park and cheer on the Huskers!

  308.

  309.
  310.
On Day 1, it was all cooking for the Huskers - Billie and the bats exploded and Sarah Harness shut down a tough-hitting Gopher team.

As the back of the conference schedule trundled along, Billie Andrews had seemed, while not necessarily slumping, to slide a little - except she really wasn’t. While her average dropped some, her eye was still fine as evidenced by the .443 OBP entering the first game of the Big 10 tournament. There seemed to be a little bad luck - having her 16th home run of the year taken off the board against Northwestern in an unfinished rain cancellation for example - and some solid shots being snagged here and there.

  311.
She was still hitting the ball hard.

  312.
It felt like a dam was about to break and when it finally did, a struggling Minnesota staff took the brunt of the flood waters. Billie finished the day 2-3 (with a HBP) with 2 HR’s, 4 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. (The lone out was a deep liner to center which a gust of wind kicked down at the track like a Roy McAvoy 3-wood.)

  313.
The Huskers popped 3 home runs on the day, the 1st one an Emmerson Cope 2-run rocket which nailed the top of the jumbotron at Bob Pearl field seemingly still on the way up. It answered a game leadoff blast by Minnesota’s Jess Oakland, the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year and gave the Huskers a 2-1 lead.

  314.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Billie hit one which looked to be even farther - and technically it was since she had the good sense to go to left center and miss the scoreboard while extending the lead to 4-1.

  315.
After a 3-run 4th inning put the Huskers on top 7-1, starter Sarah Harness, who had shut down the Gophers after the Oakland shot, found herself in trouble with all the bags occupied and Oakland up to bat in the top of five. When Oak sent a grounder to Billie at short which she tossed to 3rd for the fielder’s choice only scoring one, it felt like a victory.

  316.
And after the Andrews sisters unleashed hell in the bottom, it was.

  317.
Brooke Andrews sent a high drive to the wall in right center which Morgan DeBord - finally - could not haul in after running down Husker shots all of last weekend and most of today. It was triple. Caitlynn Neal sacrificed her in with a fly to left, Bella Bacon singled and Katelyn Caneda walked.

  318.
Then Billie came up for the last time. There was no doubt the minute the ball left her bat and when it sailed out, the Huskers had mercy-ruled the Gophers 11-2. In addition, it was 60th of her Husker career, a career which may be far from over. It was also 8th multi-homer game at Nebraska which gives her sole possession of that record as well.

  319.

  320.
  321.

  322.
To be fair, Minnesota’s ace, Bri Enter, has not pitched since April 17, and while the remainder of the staff has done what they could to chip in, none is really on the same level as Enter and it showed today as the staff was dinged for 11 earned runs in 4 1⁄3 innings, an ERA of 17.78.

  323.

  324.
With the victory, the Huskers advance to the semi-finals of the tournament and do so for the third straight season. They are the only team in the Big 10 to have done so. In addition, it was the Huskers 30th win of the season, another milestone achieved for three straight seasons.

  325.
While the final two games of the day are contested, the Huskers already know they will face Indiana in the semi-finals tomorrow. Indiana pulled off a 4-3 upset of regular season champion Northwestern in their quarterfinal matchup. The two did not meet in the regular season.

  326.
They are 39-17 and finished 12-11 in Big 10 regular season play. They are currently 45th in the RPI and played the nation’s 78 most difficult schedule. They are led at the plate by Taylor Minnick and Aly VanBrandt and attempt to cause havoc with their boasting seven players with double-digit steals on the season.

  327.
On the hill, Brianna Copeland and Sophie Klieman lead the way, With Copeland pitching 13 of 14 innings in the Hoosiers’ first two games, Klieman would seem to be the choice to start against the Huskers tomorrow. Both have been effective, but have occasional control issues and thus allow a higher number of baserunners, something the Huskers tend to exploit.

  328.

  329.
With today’s victory, the Huskers improve to 30-22. Tomorrow’s start will probably be determined by Kaylin Kinney’s health as Harness has thrown 21 2⁄3 innings since Friday.

  330.
They and Hoosiers play tomorrow at 4pm and the game will be televised on BTN. It is expected to be sunny and mild and it is the first game of the semi-finals, so there should be no start time delays.

  331.
For those listening, Nate Rohr will be on the call as always unleashing gems such this one today:

  374.
After earning AA honors as a freshman, Taylor was named the Nebraska Male Freshman of the Year; Huskers have some names in the portal and one incoming transfer so far

We’re nearly two months into the offseason for collegiate folkstyle wrestling, but there is still news to be shared about the Nebraska wrestling team.

  375.
First of all, it was a proud moment for the home-grown Antrell Taylor who was named Nebraska’s Male Freshman of the Year in late April.

  376.

  377.

  379.

  380.
  381.
  382.

  383.
A former three-time Class A state champion for Millard South, Taylor went 23-10 as a redshirt freshman this past season, finishing eighth at the NCAA tournament to earn All-American honors. He’s on track and will have the chance to become just the fourth four-time All-American in school history if he keeps on his current trajectory, possibly joining his coaches Bryan Snyder and James Green as well as former teammate Mikey Labriola who all have that distinction.

  384.
Regardless, Taylor looks like the type of wrestler you build around considering his accomplishments in his first year starting. He’s only going to get better.

  385.
Transfer Portal News

  386.
Nebraska has had some success in the transfer portal as of late, snagging guys like Liam Cronin (2023 All-American), Caleb Smith (2024 All-American) and Kyle Burwick in recent years.

  387.
It’s obvious that Nebraska prefers to recruit from high school and develop them while sometimes hitting the portal to address holes in the lineup from time to time. As for guys leaving in the portal, Nebraska hasn’t had a relevant starter hit the portal since its inception. Generally, the guys from Nebraska that enter the portal are backups or guys coming off redshirts that know they may never get in the lineup. That’s something about college athletics now that everyone is going to have to just get used to.

  388.
The window to enter the portal in college wrestling was March 20 through May 3, unless your school just went through a coaching change. With the portal closed for Husker wrestlers, we now know everyone who chose to enter it. Nebraska has five wrestlers in the portal and has one transferring in so far.

  389.
With such a big class of freshmen redshirting last season, it was bound to happen that some of these young guys didn’t see a path to the lineup — which is okay. I know that this Husker staff is very transparent with their guys and helps them find landing spots when things just don’t work out for whatever reason.

  390.

  391.
Huskers In Transfer Portal

  392.
Ethan Stiles (R-Fr.) - 157 pounds

  393.
Kyle Burwick (Sr.) - 133 pounds

  394.
Drew Cooper (R-Fr.) - 133 pounds

  395.
Tanner Frothinger (R-Fr.) - 141 pounds

  396.
Griffin Ray (R-Fr.) - 165 pounds

  397.

  398.
The biggest surprise by far was seeing Ethan Stiles on that list. A prized recruit in the class of 2023, Stiles redshirted last season and went 15-3. He fought hard and had a chance to win in a 7-2 loss to a top 5-ranked Jacori Teemer of Arizona State. The only reason that I can think of for him leaving is because Antrell Taylor is planning to move down to 157 pounds with Peyton Robb now moving on. With Taylor a sophomore and Stiles a freshman next season, that would be a long time to wait. I would argue two points there though: 1. A young guy like Stiles can move up to 165 like Taylor did and compete for that spot in the lineup. 2. With how guys tend to move up as they get older, I would anticipate Taylor moving back to 165 at some point depending on team need and how his body matures. Regardless, I do think this is a tough blow for this team and this staff. I wish he would stay, he’s really good. This move doesn’t impact the team this next year, but it certainly will alter how this staff puts together future lineups and who they recruit for a bit.

  399.
Next is Kyle Burwick, the former Badger who came to Nebraska and started the 2022-23 season at 133 pounds before losing that spot to Jacob Van Dee last year. Van Dee went on to qualify for NCAAs as a redshirt freshman. Burwick has been a great addition to this team, but with the emergence of Van Dee, I don’t fault him for leaving. In fact, I wish him the best and hope he lands somewhere that works out for him. I’ll be rooting for him wherever he goes.

  400.
I would guess that the emergence of Van Dee also influenced Drew Cooper’s decision to get in the portal. The former Nebraska state champion for Omaha Skutt, Cooper redshirted last year going 4-4 on the year at 133.

  401.
At 141 pounds, Tanner Frothinger entered the portal after going 13-5 as a redshirt. A solid developmental prospect, I was slightly surprised he entered the portal after a pretty successful redshirt campaign.

  402.
As for Griffin Ray at 165, I think that came down to just a crowded room. Nebraska could have up to seven guys competing for that starting spot next season. Ray would probably not be a serious contender for the open starting gig. He has found a new home and will wrestle next season for SIU Edwardsville.

  403.
Nebraska Adds Buffalo Transfer

  404.
As for Nebraska’s portal addition, they snagged Sam Ewing from Buffalo after they had a change at head coach this season. A 141-pounder, Ewing went 13-12 as a redshirt this past season at Buffalo.

  405.

  406.

  407.
Go ‘Skers‼️ pic.twitter.com/T7rILMECMK
— Sam Ewing (@SamEwing1_) May 6, 2024
  408.

  409.
  410.
  411.

  412.
In high school, Ewing was a three-time Missouri state champion for Pleasant Hill. He had a career record of 177-8 in high school and was twice named a preseason All-American. As a senior, he recorded 36 wins via pinfall.

  413.
As for his lineup fit goes, he has four years of eligibility remaining. Watching his matches, he looks big for the weight and I could see him moving to 149 in Lincoln. This season, Nebraska has All-Americans Brock Hardy and Ridge Lovett at 141 and 149, so it’s very unlikely Ewing cracks the lineup. I could see him getting bigger and competing at 149 in 2025 after Lovett graduates.

  414.
It’s not an impact transfer, but all that eligibility remaining makes it a solid move that should help the team in the future when Hardy and Lovett are gone.

  433.
  434.
This Thursday Travel Flakes is all about famous roadside attractions.

We’re now in the hottest time of the year in Guadalajara and most parts of Mexico and the dry season continues and the rainy season hasn’t quite started yet. Temperatures are going over 95 degrees, which is the not the most pleasant things when you don’t have air conditioning. However, I have managed to adjust to it better this year by keep my curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, running the fan most of the afternoon and keeping my window open at night to let in the cooler air before I go to bed.

  435.
Another interesting this is that Mother’s Day in Mexico is always celebrated on May 10th no matter what day of the week it falls on, which means a lot of places will be busy this Friday and into the weekend.

  436.
Do you have any plans for Mother’s Day?

  437.
What is the cleanest airport you have ever seen?

  438.
What are your favorite roadside attractions in the USA?

  439.
Do you take sleeping pills before long flights?

  440.
Have you ever been pickpocketed?

  441.
What is the most beautiful library you have ever visited?

  442.
Feel free to answer some of these questions in the comments below. Anyways...onto Flakes.

  443.

  446.
Nebraska track and field heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. this week in the hunt for individual and team titles. With 11 Husker men and one relay ranked in the top five of the conference entering the weekend, they look to repeat as victors. The women also currently have 11 athletes and a relay ranked in the top five of the Big Ten as they work to improve upon last season’s third-place team finish. Action begins on Friday at 11 a.m. (CT) for combined events, 11:45 a.m. (CT) for field events and 4:35 p.m. (CT) for running events.

  448.
Shelley, who was a three-time all-conference player for the Huskers, played 14 second-half minutes for the Mercury in an 85-59 loss. The 5-9 guard from Moe, Australia recorded a pair of assists along with a rebound and a steal for the Mercury. The 29th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft also attempted one three-pointer in her debut.

Billie Andrews was named to the All-Big Ten first team, Sydney Gray earned second-team All-Big Ten accolades and Samantha Bland was named to the All-Freshman team while Mckinley Malecha was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

  537.
This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we continue our Spring Game 2024 conversation with the one and only Hoss Reuter.

  538.
Hoss has always brought a unique analytical approach to the Five Heart Podcast. Longtime listeners will recall him in the co-host chair for a number of years dispensing wisdom, sometimes at the expense of former HCSF.

  539.
Hoss has some topics he’s bringing your way:

  540.
• Offensive concepts/identity with Raiola at QB

  541.
• How Raiola/passing game will open up the run

  542.
• what I-Back will benefit the most from an opened up passing game

  543.
• Don’t use “pro style” as a pejorative

  544.
• how he thinks we will win games this year

  545.
• Matt Rhule is ahead of schedule

  546.
I’m as eager to learn more as you are.

  547.
So in honor of Hoss’ glorious return, this will be a FOOTBALL ONLY show. It’s okay, baseball lost to South Dakota State anyway.
