Googling the term ‘impact investing’ will return search results that entail the type of investment that aims to contribute to the achievement of measured positive social and environmental impacts. Slowly and steadily, impact investing has emerged as a significant opportunity to mobilize capital into investments that target measurable positive social, economic, or environmental impact alongside financial returns.  
Joining the bandwagon, many investors are incorporating impact investments into their portfolios and are adopting the SDGs and other goals as reference points to illustrate the relationship between their assets and impact. These investments are made into companies, organizations, and funds to generate social or environmental impact alongside a financial return.
There are two sides to any impact investing deal: the impact investor and the impact investee. The goal is for both sides to benefit.
Impact Investor: Investments made to generate measurable social impact alongside a financial return.
Impact Investee: A mission-driven organization (for-profit, nonprofit, or hybrid) with a market-based strategy.
Now that I have covered the basics, let me give you a look at some ways investors can continue to align their capital with their vision for a more sustainable world:
Encourage financial incentives
Investment means buying, and the number of people buying stocks reflects an increase in the stock price. Many corporate leaders love a high stock price, which signals that their company is in good health.
As an investor, you’re essentially voting for a company when you invest in or divest from it. In other words, your investment choices matter – sustainable investing means using your investment dollars to influence the path of a corporation.
Increasing shareholder pressure also drives companies to explore and embrace better environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices and socially responsible policies. These can include setting environmental or social goals and mitigating negative impacts.
Help advance racial equity at companies and asset managers
There are several approaches you can take in this area, including supporting diverse-owned/run asset managers or looking for investments in companies that create products or solutions to address the needs of disadvantaged communities.
You might also consider looking at publicly traded companies’ diversity and inclusion records and minimizing or avoiding exposure to companies with lagging racial-equity records.
Support equality for women in the workforce
Gender equality emphasizes a balance in representation across all genders, which can help to broaden perspectives and drive better decision-making across organizations of all sizes. As it turns out, diverse perspectives can potentially increase the portfolio’s bottom line.
So, suppose you’re interested in gender lens investing. In that case, I can help you find the right strategies, whether those involve shareholder efforts to increase gender diversity in the boardroom or investing in businesses with products and services that benefit women and girls or are female-led and owned.
Motivate companies to do more and better
Anyone who buys a share of a public company has the right to vote on resolutions discussed at annual shareholder meetings. Many of these resolutions relate to sustainability issues such as climate change, diversity, human rights, or pay equity.
The average shareholder support for solutions addressing environmental and social issues has risen significantly. This has resulted in shareholders taking sustainability seriously. ESG has been a strong theme in recent proxy seasons, with activist investors increasingly willing to call out companies’ shortcomings on environmental, social, and governance issues.
The cost of green projects goes down.
Investors can favor the bonds as well as the stocks of responsible companies. Responsible companies need capital for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects to help them reach their carbon-reduction goals. Green bonds are a fast-growing avenue to raise money for such tasks.
Multiple studies have also shown that companies that score high on sustainability rankings have a lower “cost of capital”—that is, they pay less to raise money through issuing bonds or selling stock.
Bottom line
Nobody can be successful in a world that fails. With the significant influence, we have as prominent long-term investors, we need to do our part in helping deliver a healthy future for the next generations. Therefore, it is important to have a web design that enhances the overall experience of the user. While an attractive homepage will create an excellent first impression, it should also have adequate usability, making it easier for the audience to navigate the content.
Minimalistic Approach
Whoever clicks on a link is directed toward the homepage of the brand. The key to creating a captivating homepage is reducing the content on the screen. The more elements included, the more danger of the page seeming cluttered and unorganized. Multiple sidebars or sliders can be visually unappealing, making it seem confusing and hard to use. By auditing every design element, the company can ensure the relevant information is displayed on the homepage. Similarly, by neatly wrapping up the data, the homepage’s overall aesthetic also appears attractive.
Attractive Aesthetics
Continuing from the previous paragraph, aesthetics is highly imperative in the creation of any web design. Factors like the color scheme, image resolution, text font, and even the placement of the text can go a long way in making the user experience far more attractive. 
Consistency
Ensuring the overall appearance and feel of the web design should be consistent across all the pages. The most important factor to follow is that of the color palette as it can be tempting to use other shades and hues of colors to create a different aesthetic. Sticking to the ones used on the homepage, allows the client to navigate without any confusion or frustration.
Moreover, the use of the company or client logo should be consistent as well. The logo serves as the identity of the company, and the customer can only identify the authenticity of the product by recognizing the logo.
Ease of Navigation
Since homepages cannot include all the required information needed to promote the company, several tabs and sidebars are created. Yet sometimes, web designs can be too cluttered and difficult to explore. Other times, the navigation bar is hard to find. Users should be able to move seamlessly across the site and have easy access to pages, resulting in them spending more time on the website.
Readability
The type of font, as well as the size, can make or break the web design. Another factor is the amount of text written. Users will skip over text if they are long and detailed as they prefer texts that are short and to the point. Therefore, ensuring that the wording is prominent, easy to read, and interpret is a high priority. While scribing the text for the website, the language used should be simple and easy to understand.
Mobile Optimization
Normally, customers tend to open a website through their mobile devices. A web design is usually created for the sole purpose of operation and viewership from a laptop or computer. This results in a clustered and heavy webpage that most mobile phones cannot open, leading to a loss in potential customers. By creating mobile-friendly web designs using the necessary HTML template or creating a separate site, a company can offer its services to more than just laptop users.
While a beautiful experience is a focal point when designing a website, giving importance to all the other elements mentioned above is also essential. These elements will help ensure that the website has a consistence appearance across all platforms. “The mental health of our youth is in crisis, as is widely reported, but there is a lot that can be done with tech vs fighting it, to really affect positive change,” said Dr. Natanya, discussing the effectiveness of this app. “For example, with health care providers, this can be a way to supplement treatment and traditional therapy, and offers a continuous, authentic and connected thread with their patients outside of their fixed number of sessions.”
“This is all a part of the “Tech for Good” movement that we’re involved in.” Dr. Natanya stated. “Through this initiative, we’re trying to bring positive psychology, humanistic psychology, and tech together and combine voice and emotion for digital wellness.”

Cultural photography is an excellent way to catch the essence of local life and people. By showing people’s varied lifestyles, photographers can impart the cultural values and traditions that guide their life. It is a good way to peek into the world’s raw, unfiltered cultural variations. This representation gives a subtle message of inclusivity and co-existence.
That is one of the many reasons cultural photography is extremely important.
However, contrary to popular belief, cultural photography is not devoid of certain rules and tips. Like any other form of photography, it is more than simply picking a camera and taking pictures in a documentary fashion. It is a process with many nuances.
When undertaking cultural photography, you have to follow some tips and tricks to get the maximum out of what could be a rare once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You must ensure that your pictures speak of the exotic beauty and centuries of history packed inside the sight before you.
Here are some tips that can help novice cultural photographers immensely.
1. Look for the unusual
You may visit the famous monuments or markets of a region and get plenty of material as a photographer. However, as a cultural photographer, your treasure lies in unusual places. Seek out the rare markets, remote tribes, and peculiar stories hiding behind the apparent hustle and bustle of the region you are visiting. I captured the <a href="https://mattjacobphotography.com/projects/indonesia">best local life</a> of Indonesia by looking into remote tribes. Their secluded way of life would have been invisible otherwise.
2. Learn about the particular culture before you visit the place
Educate yourself. Learning about a region’s traditions, values, and practices is crucial before you take a deep dive into its culture. Your knowledge will enable you to capture the core of the culture.
3. Follow the prescribed rules of the places you visit
You must always respect and follow the rules of the locations you visit. Yes, it may become frustrating. You may not understand the logic behind certain regulations. Yet, despite it all, you have to show respect for different cultures. Remember, you are a guest in their home, not the other way around.
4. Respect privacy and ask for permission
Always ask for permission before taking pictures or set it up well before you go. Be it from the chief of a tribe or the head of a traditional dance group, respecting privacy is vital for a cultural photographer. I often take a day or two without the camera to have conversations with my subjects and spend time getting to know them and establishing a connection, before even talking to them about getting a picture. It usually makes the person comfortable and open to being photographed.
5. Pay attention to detail
Often, the culture manifests itself in a region’s deepest and most obscure nooks and crannies. Be open to capturing such details. They will make your photographs stand out from the hundred others in the crowd. In my time in <a href="https://mattjacobphotography.com/projects/uganda">Uganda</a>, I used bananas as props to highlight its status as a major crop. This detail added significant merit to my series.
6. Establish a context for your photograph
When capturing the cultural details, it is always a good idea to establish a particular context that alludes to the culture you are trying to show the world – be it through local settings, the intricate designs of jewelry, or the clothes they wear, incorporate them all in a blend to pay a true homage to the rare and explicit token of a culture.
7. Be ready to deal with unexpected obstacles and delays with patience
Cultural photography is not all smooth sailing. There are plenty of hiccups and hurdles on the way. From language barriers to cultural preferences to unfavorable natural conditions, things can go wrong in plenty of ways. It is necessary to be patient in such circumstances.
8. Immerse yourself in the culture
Live like the locals, befriend them, and participate in traditional activities. It will increase your understanding of the local place, adding richness to your photos. It will also improve your perspective and eye for catching particulars that others might miss.
These are a few tips that can become game-changers for cultural photographers. Also, remember that developing an apt artistic gaze for photographing the right moments and details will take time. Practice is the key that will take you the long way.

Art is not just a mere form of expression; it’s a powerful tool that has been driving social change for centuries. From stirring emotions to inspiring action, art has the ability to shift perspectives and transform societies.
It’s no wonder that throughout history, art has served as a medium for delivering revolutionary messages and challenging the status quo. And in today’s ever-changing political and social climates, art remains a vital force that continues to inspire and motivate.
Glass is one of the unique artistic mediums that has gained traction over the years for holding the potential to ignite social transformation. Even though it is mainly associated with decorative purposes, various artists have employed glass art to help political narratives and promote social change. In this article, I will shed some light on the quality of the particular art form for novice visionaries/artists. I will discuss my own politically charged pieces and exhibitions to aptly present this potential of glass art.
Social and political messages have been conveyed through glass art more and more in recent years. Figurative sculptures and abstract installations are both the primary forms of political glass art. These forms allow the artists to address various urgent and vital issues.
Through my exhibition, On Solid Water, I aimed to highlight the absurd times that we live in as a society, full of paradoxes and contradictions. With urgent matters like refugee crises, inequality, and poverty on the rise, the world still seems to put an oblivious front, completely ignoring the extremity of the situation. Instead, on the same level, if not more, we are bombarded with new flashes and images of insubstantial and novel events in pop culture.
This exhibition presents that hot-potch through different and disconnected figures of Mickey Mouse, Rodanna (a hybrid between Ronald McDonald and the Madonna from Michelangelo’s Pieta), a drowned refugee, and a terrorist. This jumble of historical, religious, and contemporary references symbolizes the lacking firm ground and fundamental uncertainty that prevails in modern times.

Furthermore, through the medium of glass art in this exhibition, I have presented a satirical and ironic picture of the lethargic apathy that clouds the vision of society. The work intends to pose an ethical question of where we are heading collectively with no condemnation or reflection and only accepting whatever information is provided as a part of ultimate reality.
Glass is a canvas that can be molded according to the artist’s vision. It can be used to create pieces that are a reflection of the artist’s ideological standing. That can be easily carried out through sculptures and figures that can convey political messages through severe or satirical representations.
In that line of sight, when I had to create a piece of glass art in accordance with the theme of the circus, I presented it as an allegorical representation of the political climate in America. The piece, Don’t Just Fly, Sore, is a circus elephant dressed in the color palette of reds, blues, and whites, depicted to be balancing on a circus ball. However, what is to be noted is that the circus elephant is showing no tricks but rather putting up a facade and is actually being held up by a ‘white’ pedestal.

This kind of tongue-in-the-cheek take on political issues can be presented as a piece of art as the medium that I work with provides the room to be shaped in ways that align with my ideas. Glass is a versatile material for creating art ranging from tiny figurines to massive sculptures. It is a perfect medium to express complex ideas because it enables artists to work in various sizes and styles.
With social and political issues being at the forefront of public debate in today’s world, this evolving art form can bring innovation where political expression is concerned. Glass artists have the capacity to uniquely capture the essence of a particular issue and translate it into visual art, striking a deep chord with people.
By playing with fire, glass artists personify the struggle and the need for social change. Their work can interact with light in multiple ways, creating more room for interpretation from the audience. Glass art has the capacity to closely manifest the ideologies of the masses as it is deemed highly interactive.

How is a city of 10 million people known for being the loneliest place in the world?  Just watch any indie movie with a New York City backdrop and a Labyrinth score and find yourself suddenly wanting tattoos of the words melancholy and ennui.  It can seem that in all of those 10 million people, not one of them understands us.
Luckily, in this modern age, we have billions and billions of people at our fingertips thanks to something called the internet.  Or at least this is the perspective of Katie Mack, self professed social media fan, people lover, and performance artist.  During the pandemic when Mack began to feel the pangs of loneliness, she popped onto the internet to alleviate this ache, and despite thousands of studies saying that the internet can lead to depression, Mack had an opposite experience.
“As someone who used it relatively casually prior to the pandemic, I found that applying measured amounts of intentional social media time actually left me feeling giddy and hopeful about the future and humanity,” said Mack.
And then Mack went through a break up, during the pandemic, that left her feeling nothing short of broken.
“My levels of co-dependency with my partner were so high that when we separated it felt like a drug withdrawal,” something that Mack has first hand knowledge about, ending her addiction with heroin in 2011 and alcohol in 2019, “and because of the pandemic I couldn’t get in front of people for help.”
So Mack put her heartbreak front and center on her Instagram using the hashtag #breakupcontent, and suddenly found herself fielding 1-3 DMs a day where people would pour out their own personal heartaches to her.
“I found out pretty quickly that literally hundreds of people could relate.” 
When PACA (Performing Artists Collective Alliance) theater in Erie, PA reached out about doing a virtual/in-person hybrid solo show right as theaters were allowing 50 persons or less into spaces, Mack knew she wanted to write a show for her online audience by literally using her Instagram as the backdrop to unpack her relationship with self and healing. 
“I knew I had to update my in-person audience with what my online audience had been witnessing for months, so I asked the audience to bring their phones with them to the show and use their own social media to look at mine”. Working on the show with ex-ex-ex-boyfriend, Eric Anthamatten, proved to be a cathartic experience which expedited her healing. 
“It felt like I had turned a corner,” Mack said about working on the show.
But it turned out there was a corner around this corner.  Two weeks after #breakupcontent closed, Eric Anthamatten, her now collaborator, was murdered on his trip to Oaxaca, Mexico.
“I wanted to be around people who knew Eric immediately.  And then I wanted to be around people who understand this deep loss. That’s when I turned back to the internet. I remember searching the simplest hashtag I could think of: #grief,” said Mack, “and this opened up a permission I hadn’t given myself yet. An excuse or even a push to allow myself to lean into the pain of losing someone you love.  One video led to the next, and I couldn’t stop crying, sobbing and sobbing missing Eric so much while identifying with strangers who were missing their own loved ones.  And then, after about an hour of this, I turned it off, and then as if I had gotten it out of my system for the time being, I was able to function for the rest of the day.”
Mack continued this ritual, searching #grief, #griefjourney, #trauma, #personaljourney finding stranger after stranger and meme after meme that subtly expressed exactly how she felt, something she couldn’t articulate. “It was the not feeling alone and validation that I was allowed to be this sad that helped”. 
Although this didn’t round out her mourning journey, it became such a big part of her artistic lens that when off the WALL productions out of Pittsburgh offered to commission her to write a solo show. 
“I think we grieve differently and honor the dead differently now that we use social media as a way of self expression.  Our ability to deal with loss and mourn are different than they were in 2019, and social media and the internet are part of that. In some ways, this is what #UglyCry is about. ”.
Mack’s new show, #UglyCry: grief is different now, requires audience members to reflect on their own mourning practices, mortality, and explore the future of grieving in the age of the internet, AI, and AR.
“At the end of the day, writing this show has given me more time with Eric,” says Mack, “I went from rereading our text messages every day to creating what feels like new moments with him with Artificial Intelligence tools.  The audience will use their phones just as I did as a soft opening to confront their own personal losses and begin to look at their own rituals around mourning in small and big ways”.
#UglyCry will run in Pittsburgh at <a href="https://www.insideoffthewall.com/uglycry">Carnegie Stage</a>, September 22-October 14th, and make its way to NYC at The Chain Theater from October 28th-November 18th, 2023. 
“This interactive show is guaranteed to be an experience you’ve never had at the very least,” says Mack, “and at the most, it might change the way you experience literally everything.”
