First lady Melania Trump elevated the important role that families and the home play within society at the unveiling of former first lady Barbara Bush’s U.S. postage stamp on Thursday.

“Strong American families are the foundation of a healthy society and served as a steppingstone towards building a better world,” the first lady told a crowd seated in the East Room of the White House.

“The dynamics within American households shape our nation’s core values, strengths, and collective wisdom,” Trump said. “It is within the privacy of our homes that the principles of morality, ambition, and empathy take root.”

Standing beside a large poster of Bush’s Postal Service stamp, Trump praised the former first lady for being a “devoted mother” and leaving an undeniable mark on U.S. history. She was the wife of President George H.W. Bush and the mother of President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

(Virginia Allen/The Daily Signal)

“Mrs. Bush’s legacy is marked by her respect for tradition, while also breaking with convention,” she said. “While she is known for championing literacy, she also supported women’s empowerment, changed the national conversation on AIDS, and took a stand supporting gay rights.”

A photo of the former first lady holding a baby with AIDS at a hospice for children in 1989 is one of the most iconic images of Barbara Bush. First lady from 1989 to 1993 and a mother of six, she was well known for championing children’s literacy.

As Trump noted, Bush, who died in 2018, called for America to elect a female president.

“Who knows?” Trump said, “Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps and preside over the White House, and I wish him well,” she said as laughter was heard across the room.

Earlier on Thursday, the first lady hosted an event at the White House honoring military mothers. America’s military moms are “filled with stories of personal sacrifice, determination, loss, and healing,” she said. “Certainly, only military mothers have experienced this level of grace and resilience, of American life.”

Editor’s note: This is a lightly edited transcript of today’s video from Daily Signal Senior Contributor Victor Davis Hanson. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more of his videos.

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. Recently, the German government announced that it is going to label or maybe relabel the Alternative für Deutschland—the Alternative for Germany—the conservative party that has an antithetical agenda both to the German government of both liberal and conservative factions, but also to the EU in general.

Anyway, it is announced that it will classify it as a dangerous far-right organization. And that will cement this aura that no government, under their parliamentary democracy system, will ask them to join to form a majority government. So, the process of ostracism and demonization of this party continues.

And what is the party advocating? The party is advocating an alternative for the way that Germany is going. And very briefly, we’ve talked about this, but if you look at what has become of Germany, it has had two years of essentially no growth or negative growth. Only recently, last year, did it finally, after 30 years, invest a measly 2% of its gross domestic product as it had promised in 2014. It had not met that goal. It just barely did it.

It’s had a systematic decommission of its nuclear power plants. And how anybody could rely on solar power in Germany—but yet the German government invested heavily in it. And the result is that German power, electricity—heating, cooling, and industrial use—is about four times what the average power cost is in the United States. And you can see what that’s gonna do to German investment.

They had been also sort of noncommittal about Chinese mercantilism. Because Germany—remember 10 years ago, eight years ago—started to get massive exportation to China for things like cars, especially electric vehicles, and solar panels and industrial equipment.

And they didn’t quite think that China was going to do to them what China had done to us a decade earlier. And that is invite in a country to supply them with quality goods and plants in China and be very profitable as the Chinese mastered that craft, mastered that industry, both this material side of production and the bureaucratic and corporate management.

And when China did that, they began to create German-like EVs, German-like solar panels at a much less cost and then started to export it and ruin much of Germany’s export market.

What am I getting at? Germany, in terms of power, in terms of a border that has been open, in terms of about 16% to 18% of the population that was not born in Germany and is not fully assimilated—these are refugees. Or I don’t think they’re refugees—they’re illegal immigrants from the volatile Middle East. Most of them are Muslim. Most of them do not have an intention of assimilating, intermarrying, and integrating fully in German society.

And you add all this up—and I’m not being critical. It’s very tragic because for years Germany was the powerhouse, the cohesive economic power that kept the EU together. And during the Cold War it fielded one of the best NATO armies, West Germany. Well over 400,000 troops. It’s almost literally disarmed. It cannot fulfill even its meager commitments to help Ukraine. And out of this tension, if it was a normal democratic society, you would have a variety of vocal opponents, proponents, give and take, yin and yang, and there would be a lively mix-up.

And they would come to a consensus that these were the masters of nuclear power. Twenty years ago, German physicists were the top in the world—nuclear physicists. They would start investing again in nuclear power. They would start up natural gas generation. Wind and solar would be integral, but a small part, because they would need reliable, cheap energy to compete on the world market. They would join the United States and look at China and say, “This is intolerable, this system of mercantilism.” They would close their borders. They would go to an assimilationist model and require immigrants that came legally to fully become Germans. They would do all of that.

But instead, when one party is advocating much of what I just talked about, they demonize it because it’s out of the norm. And the norm, unfortunately, in Germany today is national suicide.

Unfortunately, this is not going to end well for Germany. And it’s not gonna end well for us. We need a powerful, friendly Germany. And we wish it well. But the reaction to needed reform—economic, political, social, cultural, military, diplomatic—is not to essentially ban a political party’s freedom of expression. That shows weakness and fear rather than confidence in the future.

We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal.

Disney, which once dared to attack Florida Republicans for the sin of wanting to preserve kindergarteners’ innocence, is now opening a new park in a nation where homosexuality is a crime.

Hypocrisy much?

Disney announced Wednesday it would be opening its seventh park in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. “This seventh Disney theme park resort will combine Disney’s iconic stories, characters and attractions with Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture, stunning shorelines, and breathtaking architecture,” exults the Disney press release.

Left unmentioned is that Abu Dhabi’s “vibrant culture” bans same-sex marriage, adoption of children by same-sex couples, production of or sharing of pro-LGBTQ material, and well, homosexual sex, according to Equaldex, which tracks countries’ laws on LGBTQ matters.

In the United Arab Emirates, “[s]ame-sex sexual activity may also be penalized under Sharia law, under which the death penalty is possible, though there is no evidence that this has been used against LGBT people,” states the Human Dignity Trust, a British-based organization that provides legal aid to bolster LGBTQ rights. (The U.S. Embassy for the United Arab Emirates did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Equaldex and Human Dignity Trust’s analysis of its laws.)

Remember: Florida’s unfairly infamous 2022 bill, dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” by critics, simply prevented kids in kindergarten through third grade from having planned classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity in school.

Which is, you know, a bit of far cry from having the death penalty for people having gay or lesbian sex.

Yet Disney acted like Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was some kind of persecutor of the LGBTQ community. Then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek said he called DeSantis “to express our disappointment and concern that if the legislation becomes law, it could be used to unfairly target gay, lesbian, non-binary and transgender kids and families.”

Bob Iger, who both preceded and succeeded Chapek as CEO, shared on X an absurd post from then-President Joe Biden stating, “I want every member of the LGBTQI+ community — especially the kids who will be impacted by this hateful bill — to know that you are loved and accepted just as you are. I have your back, and my Administration will continue to fight for the protections and safety you deserve.”

Iger responded, “I’m with the President on this! If passed, this bill will put vulnerable, young LGBTQ people in jeopardy.”

Just to recap: This bill simply banned planned classroom teaching on gender identity and sexual orientation for kindergarteners to third graders in schools.

Disney CEO Bob Iger and Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro with Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi (CEO of Miral), His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak (Chairman of Miral), and His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi) pic.twitter.com/TetOHISNlX
— Boardwalk Times (@BoardwalkTimes) May 7, 2025

Compared to the United Arab Emirates, Florida is an absolute bastion of tolerance when it comes to LGBTQ matters.

So is Disney planning to build in the UAE, but also speak out against the nation’s laws?

Doesn’t appear so, as Disney communications did not respond by deadline to a press request I emailed asking them about their choice of the United Arab Emirates as the location for their seventh park given the country’s laws about LGBTQ behavior.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Disney seems to espouse one set of values in the United States and another set of values elsewhere. Disney has two parks in China, which allows partnerships, but not marriages, for same-sex couples, among other restrictions, according to Equaldex.

China’s overall human rights record is dismal. According to a 2023 State Department report, China has “[s]ignificant human rights issues included credible reports of: arbitrary or unlawful killings by the government; enforced disappearances by the government; torture by the government … harsh and life-threatening prison and detention conditions; arbitrary arrest and detention by the government including, since 2017, of more than one million Uyghurs and members of other predominantly Muslim minority groups in extrajudicial internment camps, prisons, and an additional unknown number subjected to daytime-only ‘re-education’ training; … and existence of some of the worst forms of child labor.”

But apparently none of that keeps Disney executives up at night, not the same way that someone trying not to confuse a kindergartner about her gender does.

In some ways, Disney, perhaps jolted by the blowback to its Florida stance, has tried to become less woke. In 2022, Disney released “Lightyear,” a children’s movie which featured a same-sex kiss. (The UAE banned “Lightyear,” incidentally.) That movie flopped and since then, Disney, which seems to perhaps love the profits more than the wokeness, has pivoted somewhat. A Pixar TV series set to feature a trans character was reportedly altered to remove gender identity as part of that character’s arc.

Yet two Disney shows featuring lesbian moms, “Firebuds” and “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures,” were nominated in January for the GLAAD Media Award for Kids and Family Programming.

Furthermore, in March, Disney shareholders rejected a proposal by the National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project to end the company’s participation in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index.

“Though HRC – which Disney has a paid partnership with – claims the [Corporate Equality Index] is just a ‘benchmarking tool on corporate policies… pertinent to LGBT employees,’ in reality, it functions like a social credit score for corporations,” the proposal stated.

“The threat of a bad score is wielded against corporations to force them to do the political bidding of HRC and others (like GLSEN, the Trevor Project and GLAAD, which Disney also has paid partnerships with) that seek to sow gender confusion in children, encourage irreversible surgical procedures on confused teens, effectively eliminate girls’ and women’s sports and bathrooms and roll back longstanding religious liberties.”

Disney shareholders refused to stop the company’s participation in the controversial index.

So Disney is both continuing at least some wokeness … and simultaneously expanding in a country where homosexuality is criminalized.

It doesn’t make sense—unless you realize that the highest value of Disney is getting cash, regardless of what moral compromises that entails. That type of moral hierarchy should make Disney a disappointment to both LGBTQ activists and traditional conservatives—and should certainly make Disney’s LGBTQ preaching against U.S. conservatives even more risible.

The liberals and the mainstream media are using scare tactics to upend efforts to bring much-needed transparency, accountability, and fairness to the Medicaid program. In reality, it is the blind defense of the status quo that will ultimately undermine the Medicaid program for those who need it.

A key proposal being considered by the House is whether federal funding for Medicaid expansion should remain as is or whether it is time for Congress to bring federal funding for this added category of enrollees in line with other Medicaid populations.

This debate ties back to Obamacare where the authors not only attempted to bribe the states to expand their Medicaid programs with an enormous bump in federal support but also attempted to punish those states that did not expand by threatening to remove all their Medicaid funding. The Supreme Court stepped in and struck the provision that would have states lose all their Medicaid funding but left in place the new federal enhanced funding.

Today, for states that expanded their Medicaid programs as directed, the federal government assumes 90% of the cost for the new expansion group. To put this funding shift into context, the historical categories of Medicaid enrollees—low-income pregnant women, children, elderly, and disabled—receive the standard federal match rate which ranges from 50% to 76%, depending on the state.

This funding scheme creates a cascade of distortions and unintended consequences. Most notably, since they get more federal money for the new group, it means states are more likely to seek out and enroll the expansion population over other groups.

Enrollment data shows the shift that has occurred. In 2013, the year before the passage of Obamacare, there were 61.1 million Americans on the program. Ten years later, the number jumped to 85.5 million.

Furthermore, the makeup of the program has shifted. In 2013, before the expansion, there were 27 million low-income children, 10 million adults, 5 million disabled, and 4 million elderly on the program. By 2021, the new expansion population surpassed all groups, except children, reaching 19 million enrollees.

This funding scheme also leads to more costly care. Per person spending for the adults in the new expansion group is significantly more than non-expansion adults in the program. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that Medicaid spent $3,630 per enrollee for adults in the traditional enrollment category where Medicaid spent $7,630 per enrollee for adults in the new Medicaid expansion category.

Thus, in addition to the 90% match rate fueling increased enrollment away from traditional Medicaid enrollees, it appears to also lead to more costly and more expensive care settings such as hospital emergency rooms.

Recently, hospitals have raised concerns and complaints about the change in federal funding, claiming these changes would result in hospital closures. It is important to note that Medicaid is not the sole source of funding for hospitals. Hospitals receive funding from both public and private sources. Rather than using Medicaid as a band aid for its shortfalls, if there are genuine funding needs, Congress should conduct an audit of the funding sources and identify the needs of specific hospitals.

Research by colleagues at The Heritage Foundation found that federal funding programs to hospitals for caring for the disadvantaged is a black box and there needs to be greater transparency and accountability for how those funds are allocated.

Returning the match rate to a standard match rate also does not mean there will be mandatory disenrollment. It’s worth noting that the Congressional Budget Office released a letter where they estimate that the vast majority of the expansion group would either stay on Medicaid or shift to alternative coverage, such as employer-sponsored coverage or coverage through the Affordable Care Act exchanges.

Further, many states might find they have greater flexibility to design and tailor benefits more appropriately for this group. Two states, Wisconsin and Georgia, received waivers from the federal government to add a similar group to their Medicaid programs but did so under normal match rates. Congress and the administration could offer a pathway for states to transition and ensure minimal disruption.

Fifteen years have gone by since the passage of Obamacare. The goal of Obamacare to bribe the states to expand their Medicaid programs has run its course. Today, 41 states have expanded and 10 have rejected expansion. It is time for Congress to stop prioritizing the Obamacare enrollees over the traditional groups and remove the incentive for the states to favor able-bodied, childless adults over pregnant women, children, elderly and disabled.

Columbia University’s pro-Hamas radicals couldn’t have handed the Trump administration an easier opening in its war on college campus radicalism.

On Wednesday afternoon, pro-Palestinian protesters stormed the Columbia campus and took over Butler Library during the school’s finals week. Calling them protesters is imprecise. They were a mob.

The videos are all over social media.

The New York Police Department was eventually called in and trapped the mob in the library. According to a report by The Daily Signal’s Virginia Allen, NYPD confirmed that it arrested 80 people. No charges have been made yet, but I’ll be interested to find out how many have been arrested for similar incidents in the past.

Columbia University acting President Claire Shipman put out a statement that many are praising.

A+ response by Columbia President Claire Shipman to the library occupation: pic.twitter.com/RhqhQ4viS6
— Steve McGuire (@sfmcguire79) May 8, 2025

This was well done. Having a media background, as Shipman does, sure helps when dealing with these situations.

But I’d argue that talk is cheap. School policy allowed students and protesters to wear masks if they produced IDs when asked. But they didn’t have to wear IDs on the outside of their clothes. Of course, the masked people simply ignored the ID request when it became relevant.

Whether that mask policy was designed to work or fail, the result was the same.

Not long after the mob was cleared out, Secretary of State Marco Rubio weighed in, saying that they are going to look at the visa status of the vandals.

We are reviewing the visa status of the trespassers and vandals who took over Columbia University’s library.

Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation.
— Secretary Marco Rubio (@SecRubio) May 8, 2025

Uh oh.

This latest Columbia takeover comes at an awful time for the school administration and for Ivy League schools in general. President Donald Trump has not only threatened to pull billions of dollars from schools that can’t control antisemitism and fail to protect students, but he’s also even going after their tax-exempt status.

The truth is Columbia and higher education in general now operate with the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads.

Trump and his administration have shown they are not only willing to criticize higher education institutions and the Ivy Leagues specifically, but they’re also prepared to go after them in the way that hurts most. The administration already pulled $400 million in grants from Columbia in March over its inaction on antisemitism, forcing the school to lay off 180 staff members.

This prompted Columbia to take at least some steps to show it is getting its act together. According to the New York Post, the school agreed to “ban masks for the purpose of concealing identity, empower 36 campus police officers with new powers to arrest students and appoint a senior vice provost with broad authority to oversee the department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies, as well as the Center for Palestine Studies.”

But it’s hard to break old habits.

The campus activists are used to getting their way. In the case of Columbia, the Manhattan district attorney gave those previously arrested for vandalism and disrupting campus only the lightest of slaps on the wrist. He outright dropped charges against most of the students and protesters using the bogus excuse that he couldn’t get evidence against students caught on camera trespassing, vandalizing, and assaulting on Columbia campus property.

The activists know that they can play games with administrations, which is why they make a ruckus and win concessions.

But why was there ever a negotiation? Why is it that the people who disrupt campus life and scream the loudest get anything? That’s not what attending a university should be about. The students who attend to study and engage in reasonable debate or discussion get shafted.

The truth is, the school administration and the activists are part of the same closed circuit political ecosystem that considers support of a terrorist group that wants to exterminate Jews in the range of acceptable opinion, but support of the current president to be beyond the pale.

For a very long time, higher education got away with this dynamic while our federal government gave it a blank check.

But times have changed, and the universities are in the unprecedented situation of being trapped between the government and their leftist base. For decades they’ve essentially let the campus activist wing operate with impunity while doing their best to keep right-leaning voices quiet and in their place.

But the angry mobs in their halls aren’t the only people they should be worried about. There is an angry storm of democracy outside their gate too, the once-silent majority that’s had enough.

Decades of unaccountability have made university administrations weak in the face of determined opposition. Unlike a handful of schools, like Hillsdale College, they became used to funding their bloated bureaucracies with taxpayer money. They have no idea how to operate without unquestioned federal government financial and ideological support.

The campus activists are going to continue doing what they do. Don’t think that children who are used to throwing tantrums and getting what they want are going to suddenly stop their behavior. They know campus administrations are in a bind.

Despite a few token concessions, school administrations like Columbia’s have done little to demonstrate that they can get control of the mayhem, haven’t explained why extremely wealthy schools with billion-dollar endowments deserve generous taxpayer support, and haven’t demonstrated that their sudden, laughable commitment to “free speech” doesn’t just mean free speech for leftists.

They are constitutionally unable to drain their swamp, now it seems they’ve made it easy for Trump to drain it for them.

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Following a rise in antisemitism at universities, Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., has introduced legislation aimed at stopping antisemitic harassment on college campuses.

“I think if people are troubled by antisemitism on college campuses, this is the easiest way to stop it,” Fine said of his bill.

Universities have been aggressive in efforts to protect various minority populations, and yet some institutions “seem to lose all interest when it comes to protecting Jews,” according to Fine.

His legislation aims to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit religious discrimination “under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance,” according to the text. If passed, the bill would also amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to provide means of “rigorous enforcement” against antisemitism on college campuses.

If university programs are found to have violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and engaged in antisemitic discrimination, the university could face financial fines.

“This bill would simply say that a Jewish kid deserves the same protections as a black kid or a Hispanic kid or woman or any other group of people,” Fine, who is Jewish, told The Daily Signal. “And unfortunately, colleges won’t do the right thing on their own, so we’re going to make them do it.”

Fine was clear that the bill would “restrict people’s ability to say whatever they want” on college campuses in the same way “you can’t say whatever you want about women or black students or gay students or anybody else.”

Before being elected to Congress on April 1 in a special election, Fine served in the Florida state Legislature, which passed a similar bill with bipartisan support.

The introduction of the bill in Congress comes on the heels of a long series of pro-Palestine and antisemitic protests and demonstrations on college campuses following the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The bill, Preventing Antisemitic Harassment on Campus Act of 2025, is the House version of Sen. Rick Scott’s Senate bill of the same name.

“Following Iran-backed Hamas’ attack on Israel, we saw a drastic rise in antisemitic attacks in the United States with anti-Israel mobs taking over campuses, and we’ve seen an unacceptable failure from leadership at higher education institutions to take action to condemn these mobs and protect Jewish students,” Scott, R-Fla., told The Daily Signal.

Scott called the “disturbing debacle at Columbia University,” in which pro-Palestine protesters forcibly entered a campus library and declared it a “liberation zone,” just “one more example of pro-terrorist mobs blockading Jewish students from going to class and studying for finals, fearful of the violence this lawlessness presents. That can’t happen.”

The Trump administration has announced an end to funding for a number of colleges and universities over failure to combat antisemitism on campus. In March, for example, the administration cut $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University.

“President Trump is completely right to withhold federal funding from higher education institutions that refuse to enforce the law on their campuses and enable antisemitic hate to flourish, and I’m proud to join my colleague, Rep. Randy Fine, on this bill to build on the president’s efforts,” Scott said. “These people must be held accountable.”

The Center for Politics at the University of Virginia has published a report looking at where the only two gubernatorial races in the nation stand as May dawns and the summer campaign season is on the horizon. The report comes to a surprising determination, given recent history.

Virginia and New Jersey hold their state elections the year after the U.S. presidency is contested, and with only two big races in the entire nation at that time and both seen as barometers for public opinion on how the president is doing, media attention is often substantial.

In many cases, these “off-year” elections have seen the party that lost the presidency put extra effort into “sending a message” to the public at large that the presidential victory is not some mandate for his party’s agenda over theirs and to their voter base that the party has not been dispatched into irrelevance.

For example, in 2021, the year after Joe Biden became president, not only did Republican Glenn Youngkin win the governor’s mansion in Virginia, the GOP was within three points of upsetting incumbent Gov. Phil Murphy in New Jersey, a decidedly blue state.

The first “Sabato’s Crystal Ball” report of the 2025 campaign season has been issued, and it shows that both states, which were carried by Kamala Harris by six points in 2024, are “leaning Democrat.”

Six points is certainly outside of the margin of error but not by enough to classify either state as “likely Democrat” yet. (The Crystal Ball is named after the Center for Politics’ founder, University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato, in honor of his record of success in predicting elections, aside from the 2016 and 2024 presidential races)

The center’s J. Miles Coleman wrote in his analysis: “In the smattering of elections held so far in 2025, Democrats have generally been performing similarly to how they performed in 2017, which augured well for them in the following year’s midterm. New Jersey and Virginia represent Democrats’ next big tests: They really should win both races.”

The report points out that New Jersey is still in the midst of a multicandidate primary for the Democratic Party’s gubernatorial nomination and that the center’s prediction is that U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill will win and face former state Rep. Jack Ciattarelli, the likely GOP nominee.

In Virginia, with both gubernatorial positions wrapped up by former Rep. Abigail Spanberger for the Democrats and current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears as the GOP standard-bearer, the center reports that the campaigns are already in “general election mode” and, therefore, the commonwealth has a “firmer” lean to Democrat than the Garden State.

The web publication Political Pulse has aggregated all Virginia polling through April 30 and reports that Spanberger has 42% to Sears’ 37% average. That leaves 21% undecided before Virginia’s early voting begins Sept. 19.

The wild card in these contests is the pace at which the president has been governing—with so much going on in Washington, that has not allowed for the traditional glut of national political news reporters to devote a lot of airtime or column space to these races. That is a factor that may weigh heavily in Virginia.

Additionally, with the most recent real estate report showing that residential vacancies in heavily Democrat-populated Northern Virginia are up 26%, that could make the gap between Spanberger and Sears easier to close with the vast “red” counties in the rest of the state that have lower populations.

While the recent controversies involving the down-ticket race for Virginia’s lieutenant governor have brought a little more raw attention to the Virginia races, especially to the Republicans, the GOP candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general will need a coming together as a ticket and a show of unity to get the kind of turnout they will need to win in November.

Though Donald Trump lost Virginia in 2024, 2 million Virginians voted for him. By comparison, 1.66 million voted for Youngkin when he won the governor’s race in 2021. The Republican ticket will need almost all of those Trump voters to do what so many do not do: Come out and vote in the off-year elections come November.

President Donald Trump and other political leaders from both sides congratulated the first American-born pope Thursday after the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who will lead under the name Pope Leo XIV.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

“For many of us, the name Leo XIV happily brings to mind Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum which was a blessing for working people. And it is heartening that His Holiness continued the blessing that Pope Francis gave on Easter Sunday: ‘God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail,’” Pelosi, a former House speaker, posted on X. “In his own words, Pope Leo XIV said, ‘We can be a missionary church, a church that builds bridges, that is always open to receive everyone.’ Let us thank God for His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and for this vision of unity. All of us hope and pray for the success of His Holiness and his vision for the Church.”

Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton—among Congress’ most adamant defense hawks—made clear Thursday that they will only support a deal with Iran that completely eliminates Tehran’s ability to make nuclear weapons.

The lawmakers joined forces to promote their Senate resolution on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, a resolution they say is modeled on President Donald Trump’s statements to Iran’s supreme leader.

“If Iran ever acquired a nuclear weapon capability … you’d have a nuclear arms race in the Mideast,” said Graham, R-S.C.

“But more importantly to me, I think they would use it. I think if Iran had a nuclear weapon, they would use it as part of their radical religious regime. The ayatollah and his henchman are virtual religious Nazis,” he added.

Sen.
Graham and Cotton, R-Ark., spoke to reporters to make clear their demands for any deal—full dismantling of Iran’s ability to construct nuclear weapons.

“Senator Cotton and I believe that the only way to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon is for them to completely dismantle their enrichment program,” Graham said.

He added: “To the Iranian regime: You claim all you want is a peaceful nuclear power program. You can have it, but you cannot enrich, and you must dismantle … . If negotiations and diplomacy fail, we need to go to Plan B, and Plan B would be a military strike to stop the nuclear program in its tracks.”

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. (center) and Tom Cotton, R-Ark., view an Iranian nuclear weapons program as an existential threat to world peace.
Cotton contended that Iran has “enough uranium for six nuclear weapons.”

“To be blunt, there’s no benign or good reason for Iran to have any of this,” he said.

“Iran can either have a nuclear program that is lying in ruins, smoking, destroyed, and dismantled, or it can have a peaceful civilian nuclear power program with no centrifuges, no enriching, no reprocessing and no pathway to a nuclear weapon.”

The senators did not comment on dropping economic sanctions on Iran during their remarks—a trade-off that the Trump administration is offering Iran in exchange for reforming its nuclear program.

Asked by The Daily Signal what Iran’s economic relationship with America could be after a successful deal, Graham said he would be open to it if Iran reformed.

“If they did all these things, maybe we could have a normal relationship with Iran. On the economic front, the key word is ‘normal.’ There’s nothing normal about this regime. They openly talk about destroying the Jewish state,” he replied.

“I am hoping to have a normal relationship with Iran, but they have to be normal. And they’re anything but normal.”

Cotton indicated that he wasn’t overly optimistic about opening trade relations with Iran.

“While we would welcome an end to Iran’s nuclear weapons program—the easy or the hard way—it would only be a first step towards having any kind of normal relationship with Tehran,” he said.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a massive overhaul of the United States’ antiquated air traffic control system to modernize operations and reduce delays and inefficiencies.

“This proposal seeks to transform the United States’ air traffic control system from its antiquated system to a modern system capable of meeting the demands of today and the future,” the overview shared with The Daily Signal says. “This proposal will build a new, state of the art, air traffic control system that will enhance the safety and efficiency of our national airspace.”

The Government Accountability Office had warned former President Joe Biden and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg about the failing air traffic control system. GAO published a report titled “Air Traffic Control: FAA Actions Are Urgently Needed to Modernize Aging Systems” on Sept. 24, 2024, yet the Biden administration did not act.

“Look at this report,” Duffy said on Fox News. “They knew the air traffic control system was strained and still did nothing!”

The nation’s 17 air traffic control systems range from 2 years old to 50 years old, Duffy said. The secretary is working with President Donald Trump to modernize the system.

Duffy is overhauling the air traffic control system’s telecommunications, surveillance systems, automation programs, and facilities. Travelers can expect the new system to be fully implemented by 2028.

The Transportation Department is fully replacing the existing communications network with 4,000 new high-speed network connections on fiber, satellite, and wireless, and over 30,000 services.

By 2027, Duffy will replace existing air traffic control radios with around 25,000 new ones. He will also replace the small tower voice switch, which allows pilots to transmit voice messages by pressing and holding a button.

The Transportation Department is fully replacing cooperative and non-cooperative surveillance, moving from 12 configurations to two. More than 600 radars will be replaced.

By 2028, the Transportation Department will rearchitect the antiquated slow Traffic Flow Management System, a data exchange system for supporting the management and monitoring of national air traffic flow.

Between 2025 and 2028, Duffy will oversee the building of six new state-of-the-art air traffic control centers for the first time since 1960s, focusing on co-location hard-to-staff and needed facilities.

Alaska will get 50 new Automated Weather Observing System locations, 60 Visual Weather Observing System locations, and 64 sites weather cameras.

After radar data sent over lines from New York may have failed, causing ongoing cancellations and delays at the Newark airport, Duffy announced plans to improve air traffic operations in the New York area.

“To have a better flow of air traffic into the most complex airspace, the FAA is looking to pilot best equipped best served to JFK and LGA, where starting in December 2025 to fly into these two airports between 3-8pm the aircraft must be equipped with [Multiple Airport Route Separation],” the description of the plan says.

The conclave of the College of Cardinals has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, as Pope Leo XIV. Cardinal Prevost was born in the U.S. He was chosen from a shortlist of candidates that represented Catholics from around the globe.

In a speech given from St. Peter’s Basilica, the new pope greeted the crowd with a “Peace be with you” and discussed how God loves everyone unconditionally. He also talked about building bridges with dialogue.

“Thank you, Pope Francis,” he said.

The new pope was born in Chicago, educated at Villanova University, and became a member of the Order of St. Augustine, also known as the Augustinians. He also holds a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

He was elected prior general of the Augustinians heading the religious order from 2001 to 2013. He also served as bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023. The new pope has served in a variety of leadership roles throughout the Catholic Church in addition to his pastoral ministry, including as a seminary teacher and administrator. He was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.

He will succeed Pope Francis, who died on April 21 at age 88 and was himself elected following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013 due to frail health. The news broke on Thursday evening in Rome, when white smoke was spotted rising above the Sistine Chapel, the traditional way of signaling the election of a new pope.

The pope was chosen on the second day of voting. The selection process took about the same length of time as the conclave in 2013, which also lasted two days.

Pope Leo XIV will assume leadership over more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. He will also preside over a church that is the largest nongovernmental provider of health care in the world, managing a quarter of the world’s health care facilities. Additionally, he will have influence over dozens of Catholic universities and countless other Catholic schools.

The New York Times reported that “[i]n a 2012 address to bishops, [Prevost] lamented that Western news media and popular culture fostered ‘sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel.’ He cited the ‘homosexual lifestyle’ and ‘alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.’”

The Times also reported:

As bishop in Chiclayo, a city in northwestern Peru, he opposed a government plan to add teachings on gender in schools. ‘The promotion of gender ideology is confusing, because it seeks to create genders that don’t exist,’ he told local news media.

The profile of American Catholics has risen in particular in recent years with the election in November of Catholic convert JD Vance as vice president and the creation of a Catholic majority of justices on the Supreme Court.

A variety of Catholics reacted to the election. Chad Pecknold, a professor of systematic theology at the Catholic University of America, told The Daily Signal, “We have the first American pope in Christian history at a time of great American resurgence.”

“The fact that Robert Prevost is a son of Saint Augustine is a hopeful sign to me personally. The fact that he’s chosen to follow in the footsteps of Pope Leo XIII suggests that he wants to teach with Leonine clarity and build bridges with Leonine diplomacy at a time when the world needs strong Christian leadership.”

The longtime LGBTQ+ advocate Father James Martin also had kind words to say about the new pope.

I know Pope Leo XIV to be a kind, open, humble, modest, decisive, hard-working, straightforward, trustworthy, and down-to-earth man. A brilliant choice. May God bless him.
— James Martin, SJ (@JamesMartinSJ) May 8, 2025

In a 2023 interview, Prevost discussed his views on how bishops should lead.

“A fundamental element of the portrait of a bishop is being a pastor, capable of being close to the members of the community, starting with the priests for whom the bishop is father and brother. To live this closeness to all, without excluding anyone,” he told Vatican News.

He continued:

Pope Francis has spoken of four types of closeness: closeness to God, to brother bishops, to priests, and to all God’s people. One must not give in to the temptation to live isolated, separated in a palace, satisfied with a certain social level or a certain level within the Church.

And we must not hide behind an idea of authority that no longer makes sense today. The authority we have is to serve, to accompany priests, to be pastors and teachers.

We are often preoccupied with teaching doctrine, the way of living our faith, but we risk forgetting that our first task is to teach what it means to know Jesus Christ and to bear witness to our closeness to the Lord. This comes first: to communicate the beauty of the faith, the beauty and joy of knowing Jesus. It means that we ourselves are living it and sharing this experience.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said private jet travel is the “only way you can get around, no apologies,” in response to a question about spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on chartered flights as part of his “Fight the Oligarchy” tour.

During a Fox News interview Wednesday, the self-described democratic socialist asked rhetorically, “Think I’m going to be sitting in a waiting line?”

Federal Election Commission records show Sanders’ campaign committee, Friends of Bernie Sanders, spent more than $221,000 on chartered private jets in the first quarter of 2025, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked Sanders about the flights. Baier noted that the senator has also “spent millions of dollars in campaign funds on private jet travel over the years.”

Sanders shot back with an attack on President Donald Trump.

“When is the last time you saw Donald Trump, during a campaign mode, at [Ronald Reagan Washington] National Airport?” Sanders asked.

Baier followed, “He’s also not fighting the oligarchy.”

The senator defended his air travel.

“You run a campaign and you do three or four or five rallies in a week,” he said. “The only way you can get around to talk to 30,000 people. Think I’m going to be sitting in a waiting line at United, waiting, you know, while 30,000 people are waiting?”

The two-time Democratic Party presidential primary candidate said this was normal for any campaign.

“That’s the only way you can get around, no apologies for that,” Sanders said. “That’s what campaign travel is about. We’ve done it in the past, we’re going to do it in the future.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has also been part of the tour.

President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the United Kingdom Thursday along with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

“This will be a great deal for both countries,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “It’s going to fast-track American goods.”

The president said U.S. products will “receive new market access for American industrial products that were not allowed.”

“The deal includes plans that will bring the United Kingdom into the economic security alignment with the United States,” he said. “We have a big economic security blanket.”

Trump praised the U.K. as “one of our greatest” allies. He then teased, “We have many meetings planned today and tomorrow. Every country wants to be making deals.”

The president introduced Starmer, who spoke on the phone.

“This is a fantastic, historic day,” Starmer said. “I want to pay tribute to your negotiating team. They have done an incredible job, and my team, as well.”

“This will boost trade across our countries,” Starmer added. “It will protect jobs and create jobs.”

“The timing could not be more apt,” the prime minister said, noting that the deal came on the 80th anniversary of the victory in Europe over the Nazis in World War II.

The administration has suggested it is in active negotiations with India, the U.K., South Korea, and Japan after the president announced a slate of tariffs on April 2, which he dubbed “Liberation Day.”

“Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday morning. White House officials have said they are talking to more than a dozen countries.

Stock futures rose Thursday morning as investors waited details of the announcement, CNN reported.

Dow futures jumped 300 points and S&P 500 futures rose 0.9%. Futures tied to the Nasdaq 100 gained 1.24%.

Starmer confirmed that he will speak further about the trade deal later Thursday.

“As you know, talks with the US have been ongoing and you’ll hear more from me about that later today,” he said at the London Defense Conference, The Independent reported.

“But make no mistake, I will always act in our national interest, for workers, businesses and families, to deliver security and renewal for our country,” Starmer added.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in federal documents. The vote was 211-to-206. No Democrats voted for the bill, and one Republican voted against the bill. Sixteen members did not vote. The bill will now be sent to the Senate for consideration.

The Gulf of America Act of 2025 was sponsored by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and co-sponsored by 17 other House Republicans.

The legislation would codify Executive Order 14172 by President Donald Trump, which directed the secretary of the interior to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the Geographic Names Information System.

The legislation would prevent another presidential administration from revoking Trump’s order, and mandates that, “Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to the Gulf of Mexico shall be deemed to be a reference to the ‘Gulf of America.’”

Democrats are FURIOUS that we want to permanently rename the Gulf of America, but they had no problem renaming military bases and tearing down statues of Lincoln and Washington.

They don’t hate the name…
They just hate America. pic.twitter.com/67cshq4fKQ
— Rep.

I’m honored to be here today in front of the American people as we debate the merits of the Gulf of America Act. This would rename the body of water, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, to the Gulf of America.

This is such an important thing to do for the American people. The American people deserve pride in their country, and they deserve pride in the waters that we own, that we protect with our military and our Coast Guard, and all of the businesses that prosper along these waters.

But Democrats today are outraged. They’re outraged because they love the cartels more than any other people in the world, more than the American people. They spent the past four years funding and voting for policies that ripped our borders open and allowed our country to be invaded by millions and millions of people. Drugs and fentanyl that murdered over 300 Americans every single day. Human trafficking, child sex, trafficking, terrorist, and millions of people that we have no idea where they are in the interior of this country.

Democrats are outraged today because they are America last and they hate anything that would give the American people pride. The Gulf of America is one of the most important things that we can do this Congress.

This is an executive order written by the president of the United States, which, by the way, is president today because the American people rose up and voted against a Democrat Party that was completely America last. Section One of the executive order lays out the purpose in policy and directive stating it is the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our nation and ensure future generations of American citizens celebrate the legacy of our American heroes.

The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking, natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our nation’s rich past.

Americans have watched Congress week in and week out rename post offices. Democrats vote for it all the time.

Democrats aren’t afraid to rename anything. They’ve been renaming military bases because they hate our history and hate our heritage. This is also the same Democrat Party that cheered when their ground troops, Antifa, and radical rioters went throughout American cities and tore down statues like Lincoln and Washington.

The Democrat Party doesn’t want to preserve America’s rich history or promote pride in our country, our lands, our people, our businesses, and yes, our waters, the Gulf of America.

The Democrat Party wants to remain the best business partner to the cartels that they’ve ever had. It’s the cartels that have been enriched by tens of billions of dollars because of Democrat policies, and they’ll continue to protect them and fight for them.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.

Police responded Wednesday to a request for help from Columbia University after a large group of pro-Palestinian protesters forcibly entered a campus library and declared it a “liberation zone.”

The New York Police Department made 80 arrests, but no charges had been brought as of early Thursday morning, NYPD told The Daily Signal.

“I hope they will face serious consequences for their unlawful actions,” Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said of the protesters in a post on X.

According to Columbia, a significant number of those who took part in the library takeover are believed to be “not affiliated with the University.”

“The anti-Israel movement has metastasized into street thuggery since the Oct. 7 massacre, and the campuses are the epicenter,” Bill Jacobson, founder and publisher of Legal Insurrection and a law professor at Cornell Law School, told The Daily Signal.

“It is not surprising that violent non-student groups also have flocked to campuses, where they find a receptive environment,” Jacobson added. “Columbia, with its long history of anti-Israel activism by students, faculty, and administrators is a logical magnet for the worst elements in our society. The Trump administration is asking a question many Americans are asking: ‘Why are we funding this?’”

The Trump administration cut $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University in March, citing incidents of antisemitism as the reason.

Video of the incident shows a large, masked crowd forcing its way past a security officer and into Butler Library. Once inside, the group hangs signs and banners reading “liberated zone” and “Free Mahmoud Khalil.” In March, the Trump administration arrested Khalil—a former Columbia University graduate student, green card holder, and pro-Palestinian activist—and is seeking to deport him.

Inside the library, the group pounded on drums and shouted, “Free Palestine,” and called for a “global intifada.”

Protesters penned graffiti inside the library, writing, “Learn from Palestine” and “CU U will see,” “CU” standing for Columbia University.

Hours after the takeover began, police escorted the protesters, hands zip-tied behind their backs, out of the library.

“Disruptions to our academic activities will not be tolerated and are violations of our rules and policies,” Columbia said in a statement following the incident, adding, “This is especially unacceptable while our students study and prepare for final exams.”

“Columbia strongly condemns violence on our campus, antisemitism and all forms of hate and discrimination, some of which we witnessed today,” the university said. “We are resolute that calls for violence or harm have no place at our university.”

Two Columbia Public Safety officers were injured during the protest, according to the university.

Mass pro-Palestinian protests and an encampment broke out on the campus of Columbia University campus last spring. The anti-Israel demonstrations on campus ultimately led to Minouche Shafik resigning from her position as president of the university.

THE CENTER SQUARE—A new analysis has found California gasoline prices could rise to $8.44 per gallon by the end of 2026 after the pending closure of two refineries—one-fifth of the state’s refining capacity—and the onset of new state regulations.

California gas prices are already the nation’s highest, at $4.78 per gallon for regular-grade gasoline Tuesday, according to AAA.

The new study from University of Southern California professor Michael A. Mische examined California’s historical gas prices, oil supply, and refining capacity, and modeled the likely impact of refinery closures and costly new fossil fuel and refinery fees and regulations.

“The shutdown of the two California-based refineries could possibly place the Golden State in a precarious economic situation and create a gasoline deficit potentially ranging from 6.6 million to 13.1 million gallons a day, as defined by the shortfall between consumption and production,” wrote Mische. “Reductions in fuel supplies of this magnitude will resonate throughout multiple supply chains affecting production, costs, and prices across many industries, such as air travel, food delivery, agricultural production, manufacturing, electrical-power generation, distribution, groceries, and health care.”

“Based on current demand and consumption assumptions and estimates, the combined consequences of the 2025 Phillips 66 refinery closure and the April 2026 Valero refinery closure, together with the potential impact of legislative actions such as, but not limited to, the new [low-carbon fuel standard], increase in excise taxes, Cap and Trade, SBX1-2, and ABX2-1, the estimated average consumer price of regular gasoline could potentially increase by as much as 75% from the April 23, 2025, price of $4.816 to $7.348 to $8.435 a gallon by calendar-year end 2026,” continued Mische.

Mische said the difference between California gas prices and those of other states is the result of state taxes and fees, and of policies that have reduced in-state oil production and refining capacity faster than gasoline demand has fallen.

“Over the last 30 to 50 years, the California state excise tax on gasoline has increased by 253%, the number of motor vehicles has grown by 38%, and our population has increased by 24%,” Mische wrote. “Meanwhile, the number of refineries has declined by 56%, in-state oil field production has fallen by 63%, finished gasoline stocks have declined by 98%, in-state daily refinery capacity has decreased by 36%, average gasoline prices for all formulations have gone up by 253%, and imports of non-U.S. foreign oil increased 712%.

“Concurrently, a series of regulatory costs that have been layered onto refiners, distributors, and local operators have had a compounding effect on retail prices at the pump,” Mische said.

California regulators last year approved a new low-carbon fuel standard, which requires producers of fuels that are more carbon-intensive than a rising standard to buy credits from producers of fuels that are less carbon-intensive than the standard.

The state says the program will increase fuel costs by $162 billion through 2046, while creating $105 billion in electric vehicle charging credits and $8 billion of hydrogen credits.

Most home EV charger purchasing agreements require homeowners to surrender their low-carbon fuel standard credits to the charger’s producer; meaning, while homeowners pay for the chargers, energy, and property to charge at, charger sellers will get the credits.

Senate Bill X1-2, which set a maximum profit margin for refiners, and Assembly Bill X2-1, which allows the state to set minimum inventory requirements for refineries and have final say over when refineries are allowed to shut down for essential maintenance, were called for by California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The bills passed during a special legislative session last year convened by Newsom for the sole purpose of passing refinery regulations.

Chevron and the governors of Arizona and Nevada—a Democrat and a Republican, respectively—all warned the two bills would create fuel shortages and raise prices for Americans all across the region, as parts of the two states rely on California refineries for their fuel. In February, gas prices spiked across the region as California regulators blocked a refinery’s repairs for nearly two weeks after a fire erupted as the refinery prepared to shut down for essential maintenance.

In a late April letter, Newsom called on the California Energy Commission to “work closely with refiners on short- and long-term planning, including through high-level, immediate engagement, to help ensure that Californians continue to have access to a safe, affordable, and reliable supply of transportation fuels, and that refiners continue to see the value in serving the California market.”

California Republicans have responded by calling for Newsom to take immediate action to reverse his own regulations, and not pass the buck instead of waiting months for a report from the California Energy Commission.

“Your recent letter asked the CEC to provide recommendations by July 1 on how ‘refiners can profitably operate in California,’” state Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones, R-San Diego, wrote in a letter. “But we do not have the luxury of time to wait for another report while closures proceed and prices climb.”

“Rather than relying on a lengthy bureaucratic process, I strongly urge you to work directly with California’s fuel producers and find immediate solutions that prevent further closures and ensure long-term energy stability,” continued Jones. “A few ideas worth exploring could include investment tax credits, and temporary or permanent relief from certain taxes and regulations.”

Originally published by The Center Square

On Feb. 28, 1993, 70 agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives laid siege to the home of the Branch Davidians near Waco, Texas. By April, skirmishes with ATF and a fire resulted in the deaths of more than 80 men, women, and children.

Significant questions still linger about the events of the Waco siege—also known as the Waco massacre—but at the heart of the mystery lies a stark and troubling question: How did a federal investigation into alleged illegal weapons spiral into a catastrophic inferno that left over 80 people dead?

Waco lives on in infamy, but it is a flashpoint in a wider record of controversial behavior from the ATF. Incidents such as Ruby Ridge, Operation Fast and Furious, and the fatal shooting of Brian Malinowski in March 2024 continue to raise serious concerns about the agency’s strategies and use of force.

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., has introduced a bill to abolish the ATF. He joined “The Signal Sitdown” this week to break it down.

”Women and children were burned alive in a building all because the ATF believed that David Koresh and the people that lived there were changing the triggers to turn semi-automatic rifles to automatic,” Burlison said of the Waco massacre. “That’s what [the ATF] believed.”

“Nothing can justify going in and what happened to those people,” Burlison added. “I feel like they were absolutely innocent people.”

A long-time advocate of Second Amendment rights and ATF antagonist, Burlison has spoken to members of the Waco community who knew the Branch Davidians. “When you talk to people that live in that area, that knew them, sure they thought they were kind of a goofy group, but certainly nice people,” Burlison told The Daily Signal.

Though this all sounds antagonistic to law enforcement, the ATF is a different animal than your local cops that make up the thin blue line. “I will defend law enforcement all day because they’re the ones that are supposed to be defending our rights and our life, but when that very law enforcement becomes abusive, it becomes an institution that’s designed to take away our rights, they’re no longer living under the Constitution,” Burlison explained. “They’re a rogue agency, and the ATF has proven time and time again that they need to be reigned in.”

Burlison knows his legislation faces an uphill battle. Nevertheless, “I believe that we’ve moved the needle on this,” Burlison said. “Politics is about changing the Overton window, and when the Trump administration came in, and DOGE is looking for places to save money, this is a great place to save money.”

“In fact, it’s not that radical of an idea,” Burlison explained. “When you look back in the nineties, Bill Clinton and Al Gore, in their big proposal to eliminate departments, the ATF was one of the agencies.”

Many of the ATF’s law enforcement functions appear duplicative, he suggested. The result, according to Burlison, is that “the ATF just steps on everybody else.”

“It’s time that the agency get rolled into the FBI, which I was glad to see that Kash Patel has moved over a thousand of those employees over or eliminated those positions, and I’m glad to see that in Trump’s new budget that he’s cutting the agency by over 25%,” he said.

President Donald Trump’s budget proposal for FY 2026 would slash ATF funding from $1.625 billion to $1.2 billion. A senior White House official justified the proposed cuts, recently telling ABC News that the ATF has created “abusive regulatory decrees.”

Burlison said he hopes this could lead to an end to the agency.

“You could do to the ATF what they did to the Department of Education,” he said. “Eliminate the agency, but the core functions, the things that are necessary, you move the responsibility of those squarely in one other agency, in this case, the FBI.”

The Trump administration pulled the nomination of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat to be surgeon general following reports that she inflated her credentials, Bloomberg reported.

President Donald Trump instead nominated Dr. Casey Means on Wednesday, saying Means “will work closely with our wonderful Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to ensure a successful implementation of our Agenda in order to reverse the Chronic Disease Epidemic, and ensure Great Health, in the future, for ALL Americans.”

Means attended Stanford Medical School, then she pursued a surgical residency at Oregon Health & Science University. Before completing the program, she dropped out to start her own functional medicine practice and founded the company Levels, which offers consumers continuous glucose monitors and an app to track their blood sugar.

Means’ brother, Calley Means, is a prominent advisor to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The former nominee, Nesheiwat, has described herself as a double board-certified physician with a degree from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine. But Nesheiwat actually earned her medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, in St. Maarten.

Nesheiwat has also been criticized by conservatives for touting the idea that children can identity as a gender that differs from their biological sex.

“But the most important thing of all of this is no matter what gender your child identifies as, accept them and love them for who they are,” she said on Fox News in 2022.

Nesheiwat’s nomination hearing was scheduled for May 8 before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

Nesheiwat’s sister Julia is married to Mike Waltz, who was recently moved from national security advisor to the nominee for United Nations ambassador.

Nesheiwat’s positions on vaccines differ from that of the Health and Human Services secretary.

Nesheiwat has previously described the COVID vaccine as a “gift from God.”

“I’m optimistic we are on our way to ending the needless loss of lives starting with the nothing short of miraculous coronavirus vaccine and the development of therapeutics,” she wrote in an opinion piece published in Fox News in 2021.

“We have many vaccines in existence that treat a variety of non-life-threatening diseases,” she continued, “but to have a COVID vaccine, i.e. a Pfizer or Moderna mRNA that will actually save you from dying is a gift from God.”

Kennedy has called the same immunization the “deadliest ever made.”

A House Democrat moved to adjourn a hearing before Payton McNabb, who as a teenager suffered a traumatic brain injury after getting spiked in the head by a male athlete in women’s volleyball, could testify.

McNabb, an ambassador with the Independent Women’s Forum, told The Daily Signal she thinks the Democrat did this in order to prevent McNabb from speaking.

The House DOGE Subcommittee in the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing called “Unfair Play: Keeping Men Out of Women’s Spots.” The hearing included four witnesses: McNabb; competitive fencer Stephanie Turner, who withdrew from a fencing round when paired against a male athlete competing in women’s sports; USA Fencing Chair Damien Lehfeldt; and Fatima Goss Graves, CEO of the National Women’s Law Center.

“I want to make clear that this hearing is actually not about oversight or DOGE, but about spreading hate and using trans lives to distract from the real issues that Americans are facing, from attacks on our economy, to attacks on our democracy, to attacks on our communities,” Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., the subcommittee ranking member, said during her opening remarks.

Here's Rep.

She moved to adjourn the hearing, and when Subcommittee Chair Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., held a voice vote and determined that the “nays” have it, Stansbury called for a recorded vote, delaying the hearing further.

“I think that she tried to end that completely because she just didn’t want to hear it,” McNabb told The Daily Signal in a phone interview after the hearing.

“She didn’t want either of us to share our story, which was pretty obvious throughout the whole thing,” the former athlete said of Stansbury. “She tried to sweep this under the rug even while we were laying out the facts that it does exist and it does matter.”

McNabb noted that neither Stansbury nor any of the other Democrats in the hearing asked her a question.

“She doesn’t even care how we feel,” McNabb said. “She was fighting for the trans community.”

“The theatrics were a lot and I think she was trying to get some media attention from it,” the witness added.

McNabb noted that Stansbury came to her and to Turner, the other athlete witness, privately “and was trying to thank us for coming and testifying.” Stansbury also thanked them in her closing remarks.

“I don’t believe that at all,” she said. “Stephanie even told her, ‘If you actually cared you would have asked us a question.’”

Stansbury’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment in response to the suggestion that she tried to end the hearing in part to prevent McNabb from testifying.

Stephanie Turner

Turner, the competitive fencer, testified first.

“USA Fencing has over 200 self-declared members who identify as transgender,” she said. “Each time a man competes in the women’s category with USA Fencing’s support, it removes fair sport and takes opportunities from women.”

“It’s unbelievably demeaning to female fencers to put down the differences between men and women and any woman’s loss to a man as a skill issue or that a woman simply needs to work harder,” Turner added.

She condemned “a culture of intimidation which demands that we be silent when men enter our tournaments, a culture that includes public humiliation, bullying, social ostracism, dismissal, and even threats.”

Payton McNabb

When McNabb was able to testify, she said her love of sports has been “taken away from me since 2022, following a serious but avoidable injury.”

"We cannot and should not forget the gruesome injury suffered by one of our witnesses here today, @paytonmcnabb_," notes @RepMTG in a @DOGECommittee hearing.

She shares the horrifying video of Payton McNabb getting spiked in the head by a male identifying as female pic.twitter.com/9056ZDJPzY
— Tyler O'Neil (@Tyler2ONeil) May 7, 2025

“My athletic career was hindered and cut short because I was forced to compete against a male athlete on an opposing high school women’s volleyball team on Sept. 1, 2022,” she added. “The male athlete went up to spike the ball, and it came right at my face, slamming into my head.”

“The force of the ball knocked me down unconscious,” McNabb recalled. “While my body lay in a fencing position on the court. The fencing position is how your body reacts to a serious brain injury. Everything was dark to me. The auditorium was absolutely quiet and my teammates were scared. That was my last day playing volleyball.”

“It is completely aggravating because the injury suffered was 100% avoidable, if only my rights as a female athlete had been more important than a man’s feelings,” she added.

Damien Lehfeldt

Greene confronted Lehfeldt, the chair of USA Fencing, with a photo he posted on social media ahead of the hearing. The photo Greene shared suggested Lehfeldt had held up an obscene hand gesture, but Stansbury interrupted Greene to show another photo, which suggested the previous photo had been cropped and Lehfeldt did not use the obscene gesture.

Lehfeldt initially refused to testify, but he appeared in response to a congressional subpoena.

Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, highlighted one of Lehfeldt’s social media posts comparing a parent who was concerned about males in women’s sports to the Ku Klux Klan. Lehfeldt acknowledged the post and apologized for it, calling it “inappropriate.”

Graves, the National Women’s Law Center CEO, argued that “transgender women do not pose a threat to women’s sports. Transgender women belong in sports.”

“I’m here because I care about all women and girls in sport, and I know that bullying trans kids and creating panic about the existence of trans people will not make us safer,” she said.

Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., asked Graves, “What is the average difference in skeletal muscle between biological men and biological women?”

Graves did not directly answer, but she insisted that there is no overwhelming advantage for males competing in women’s sports.

“The answer, I think where you’re trying to go, is ‘Is there an inherent advantage for transgender women in sports in all contexts?’ and the answer is no,” she said.

McClain responded that men have 30%-40% more skeletal muscle than women and that biological men exhibit 20%-50% greater upper body strength.

Graves acknowledged that “what happened to” McNabb was “tragic.”

“I would argue, though, that the answer is to ensure that people can’t spike volleyballs into people’s heads,” she added. “That seems unsafe, no matter who’s spiking the ball.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has declined to tell The Daily Signal whether he will sign or veto a measure to protect women from unfair competition in sports, after the bill passed the state Senate in a bipartisan vote Tuesday.

The Daily Signal reached out multiple times and connected twice with a staffer, but Shapiro’s office did not provide a response by the deadline. Shapiro has previously opposed a substantially similar bill.

“This bill is nothing more than cruel, designed to discriminate against transgender youth who just want to play sports like their peers,” he wrote in 2021. “Our [Gov. Tom Wolf] will veto this & defend our LGBTQ+ community — but *this* is the GOP’s vision for Pennsylvania.”

Shapiro may be declining to take a stand on the issue due to presidential ambitions.

Senate Bill 9, the Save Women’s Sports Act, passed the Senate, 32-18, on Tuesday. Five Democrats joined 27 Republicans in voting for the bill. (Republicans enjoy a slight majority, 27-to-23.)

It remains unclear if the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (where Democrats have a one-seat majority, 102-to-101) will take up the bill.

Lisa Boscola, one of the Senate Democrats who voted for the bill, said she supports inclusion but emphasized that men enjoy biological advantages over women in many sports.

“I do empathize with individuals in transition, a person trying to come to grips with who they are,” she declared in a speech on the Senate floor. “A decision like this cannot be easy, and it can be for some isolating and scary. Sports is an opportunity to be included, but it must be done correctly, safely, and fairly.”

“Separating biological males and females for sports, especially after puberty, is necessary for fairness,” Boscola said. “Let’s talk reality. We divide boys and girls for sports by biology starting around the teenage years because the process of growing into men and women has a clear impact on athleticism.”

She mentioned Lia Thomas, a male swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania who competed in men’s events before identifying as female and joining the women’s team.

“Looking at rankings of Lia Thomas, the swimmer at UPenn, you also gain some perspective of the difference of physical ability,” Boscola noted. “In the 2018-2019 season she was, when competing in the men’s team, ranked 554th in the 200 freestyle, 65th in the 500 freestyle, and 32nd in the 1650 freestyle. In the 2021-2022 season, those ranks are now, when competing in the women’s team, fifth in the 200 freestyle, first in the 500 freestyle, and eighth in the 1650 freestyle and that was with two years of hormone treatments.”

It seems Pennsylvania Democrats are operating on the presumption that Shapiro will veto the bill.

“You know this bill is not going anywhere in the House,” Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa, a Democrat, said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “You know it’s not going anywhere to the governor’s desk. This is simply being done for political reasons to be able to create a divisive chamber here.”

Costa called the bill discriminatory, “unnecessary, unwarranted, and unconstitutional in my mind.”

When the bill first passed out of the Senate committee in March, a spokeswoman for House Majority Leader Matt Bradford dismissed it as political theater.

“In the House, we remain focused on building good schools for every kid, cutting costs for working families and making sure everyone can see a doctor,” Elizabeth Rementer said at the time.

Rementer did not respond to The Daily Signal’s request for comment on whether the House will take up the bill.

Editor’s note: This is a lightly edited transcript of today’s video from Daily Signal Senior Contributor Victor Davis Hanson. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more of his videos.

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. We’ve touched on polls before, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite as egregious in pollsters’ bias as recently when they apparently or supposedly or purportedly surveyed the first 100 days of President Donald Trump and the public reaction.

Almost immediately headlines blared, “Worst First 100 Days in History.” “Trump Drops From 52 to 42.”

Everybody was confounded because the economic news was pretty good. Job growth was just spectacular. Over 170,000 jobs. Inflation was down. Energy prices were down. Corporate profits were up. There was a movement on the trade question. Ukraine still—there was no bad news except the controversy and chaos of a counterrevolution.

So, what were the pollsters trying to tell us? Or were they trying to manipulate us? And I think it’s the latter.

Larry Kudlow, for example, the Fox, former Fox Business—I think he still is at Fox. He pointed out that when he examined The New York Times and The Washington Post polls, they were deliberately not counting people who surveyed that they were Trump voters in 2024. That was half the country. They were only polling about a third. Think of that. A third of the people that said they voted for Trump they polled. Not half. So, of course, their results were going to be disputed or suspect.

But here’s another thing. There were analyses after each of the 2016, the 2020, and the 2024 elections about the accuracy of polls, post facto, of the election. And we learned that they were way off in 2016. They said they had learned their lessons. They were way off in 2020. They said they learned their lesson. And they were way off in 2024.

And why are they way off? Because liberal pollsters—and that’s the majority of people who do these surveys—believe that if they create artificial leads for their Democratic candidates, it creates greater fundraising and momentum. Kind of the herd mentality. “Oh, Trump is down by six. I don’t wanna vote for him. Then he won’t win.” That’s the type of thing that they want to create.

I’ll give you one example. The most egregious. The most egregious of all these polls was the NPR/PBS/Marist poll. They have Donald Trump just very unpopular after 100 days. Very unpopular. This is the now-defunded Corporation for Public Broadcasting, that umbrella organization from which this poll was funded and conducted.

Do we remember that poll? It was the one poll that came out the night before the 2024 election. They said that then-Vice President Kamala Harris would win by four points. And they said it was beyond the margin of error. And one of the pollsters said, “It’s her race to lose.” She lost by a point and a half. They were five and a half points. Did they apologize? No. Here they are again.

And David Plouffe, one of the directors of the Harris campaign, just recently came out and said, “Well, we had all these inside polls we never disclosed. But not one of them—not one of them—had Harris ever ahead of Trump.”

Inside polls don’t lie because you pay somebody to tell you the truth. Nothing will get you fired and lose income quicker than to lie about a poll so that your candidate will be happy and rely on your false information. People don’t pay for that kind of stuff.

So, in other words, they knew the whole time—the Harris campaign—that 15 of those 20 polls, 19 polls that all had Harris winning the election, they were all false. Of course, they never said anything.

And so, here’s my point. If you look at the polls that were the most accurate—Mark Penn was very accurate. He’s a Democratic pollster. But especially, the Rasmussen poll and the Insider Advantage and the Trafalgar poll. They joined together and they had a 100-day survey. Rasmussen—each day of the 100-day period that he’s issued a poll. And guess what? They have Trump ahead by anywhere from two to three points after 100 days. And they were the most accurate.

And yet, what do these news outlets say that Trump—it’s a disaster. That he’s polling—no. He’s polling very well. Things are going very well.

The pollsters that indicate that people support him are the only pollsters that have any reputation after this decade-long polling disaster in which their prejudices, their biases, and their hatred of Donald Trump affected their results. And they were effectively in league with the Democratic candidate to create momentum rather than to adhere to a spirit of professionalism and honor.

We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal.

In 2022, first-time mothers averaged 27 years of age, up from 21 in 1970, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

With more women waiting until later in life to get pregnant, there is an increased need for resources for staying fertile and overcoming fertility challenges in women’s 30s and 40s. Grace Emily Stark, editor-in-chief of Natural Womanhood and a fertility instructor, says there are three things all women can start doing today to increase their chances of getting pregnant in the future.

First, and arguably most important, according to Stark, is tracking one’s cycle—and not just on a mobile app. Because the health of a woman’s menstrual cycle is an indicator of her overall physical health, Stark contends women can’t afford to be ignorant about their cycle and what is—and is not—normal.

Next, what we eat and drink can play a direct role in the body’s ability to maintain a healthy cycle and in turn, get pregnant. There’s no reason any women should be drinking soda or using tobacco products, according to Stark. A low-sugar and low-carb diet with lots of healthy fats, protein, and fiber is the best way to ensure your body is prepared for pregnancy.

Finally, Stark recommends consistent low-intensity exercise for maintaining a healthy cycle and getting pregnant. High-intensity exercise, like CrossFit, can place excessive stress on a woman’s body, which in turn affects her hormones and her cycle, she explains.

Today, the moment a woman can’t conceive, much of modern medicine advocates for in vitro fertilization, but as Stark explains on “Problematic Women,” it’s important to first understand why your body is struggling to conceive and to know the wide range of natural tools and resources available to increase fertility.

Catch the full conversation with Stark on “Problematic Women” above.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Wednesday he would call the U.S. ambassador to Denmark following a report in The Wall Street Journal that the U.S. plans to launch an intelligence-gathering operation on Greenland.

“I have read the article in The Wall Street Journal, and it worries me greatly, because we do not spy on friends,” Rasmussen told reporters.

Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark, but it’s closer geographically to the U.S. than to Denmark.

The Trump administration has directed U.S. intelligence agencies to step up information-gathering on Greenland, further indicating President Donald Trump’s interest in the North Atlantic island.

Last week, the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency were given a “collection emphasis message” under the direction of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The agencies have been directed to learn more about Greenland’s attitude toward independence and its interest in American extractions of its resources, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The fact-finding efforts may include use of intercepted communication and spy satellites, in addition to human intelligence.

Gabbard was critical of the Journal for reporting the story, saying the news outlet should “be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the president by politicizing and leaking classified information.”

The Journal is “breaking the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy,” according to Gabbard.

The report of U.S. intelligence-gathering in Greenland comes just about a week after Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said remarks from leaders in the U.S. have “not been respectful.”

Greenland is “ready for a strong partnership [with the U.S.] and more development, but we want respect,” Nielsen said. “We will never be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone.”

In a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on April 27, Nielsen stressed the important relationship between Greenland and Denmark, telling reporters the current foreign policy situation “means we have to move closer together.”

Not long after taking office, Trump expressed an interest in the U.S. claiming Greenland, a sentiment the president reiterated as recently as this week.

“We need Greenland very badly,” Trump said in an interview with NBC News that aired Sunday. “Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security.”

Greenland not only offers large amounts of natural resources, but its proximity to the Arctic is also critical, given Russia’s and China’s growing presence in the region.

Trump has not ruled out the possibility of using military resources to annex Greenland.

The Venezuelan government was facilitating the illegal immigration of dangerous gang members into the United States, according to multiple intelligence reports, and the legacy media is trying to portray this as bad news for the Trump administration.

On Monday The New York Times ran a story with a headline “Declassified Spy Memo Contradicts Trump on Venezuela Gang Ties.” Other legacy media outlets ran with similar headlines.

The stories are referring to Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan prison gang that the Trump administration has designated a terrorist organization.

If you just read the headlines, you might think that the declassified intelligence report says the Venezuelan government had nothing to do with the exportation of Tren de Aragua gang members to the U.S., as President Donald Trump has said.

However, not every outlet ran with these headlines. The New York Post had a very different angle.

“Corrupt Venezuelan officials ‘facilitated’ Tren de Aragua gang’s reign of terror in U.S.” read its headline on Monday.

So why the enormous discrepancy? What’s the intelligence report actually say?

According to the report titled “Venezuela: Examining Regime Ties to Tren de Aragua,” intelligence officials think the Venezuelan socialist regime led by President Nicolas Maduro has “facilitated” the illegal migration of gang members into the U.S. “to advance what they see as the Maduro regime’s goal of destabilizing governments and undermining public safety.”

According to the assessment, Venezuela has been doing this for years and during the peak years of illegal border crossings—the Biden years—the intelligence report concludes that there were likely Tren de Aragua members slipping into the country.

“From 2021 to 2024 there was a spike in Venezuelan encounters at the US-Mexico border, in which some TDA members could have been present as they have generally moved with Venezuelan migrant communities and profit from human trafficking and migrant smuggling,” the report said.

No kidding.

Here’s where the legacy media says the “gotcha” comes in.

The New York Times argued that the report doesn’t draw a direct connection between the Venezuelan government and Tren de Aragua. As in, the government doesn’t literally give the gang marching orders. So, this undermines the Trump administration’s legal case to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport illegal aliens on a mass scale, it argues.

Again, if you read the report, it is ambiguous as to what level of confidence the intelligence sources have that there is no connection between the gang and the government. It only says that the Maduro government “probably” doesn’t direct Tren de Aragua in part because doing so with such a decentralized crime organization would be difficult.

A month ago, the FBI assessed, according to Fox News, that “some Venezuelan government officials are likely using Tren de Aragua members as proxies for the Maduro regime in an effort to destabilize Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and the United States.”

This intelligence report is simply a watered-down version of what the FBI said. And it doesn’t contradict the most important aspect of the whole affair.

Both reports say the Maduro regime was eager to drop Tren de Aragua gang members on the United States and did what it could to clear the path for it to do so. This new assessment even says that harm to the U.S. might have been the “principal intent” of the policy.

Whatever Maduro’s intent, the effect was the same. The Venezuelan government cleared the way for potentially huge numbers of Tren de Aragua gang members to come to the United States.

“Whether [Tren de Aragua] exclusively murders, smuggles drugs, and traffics illegal immigrants over our borders on the orders of Venezuelan leaders, or freelances for self-enrichment is beside the point,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote in a Fox News op-ed last week. “It has killed on behalf of a hostile foreign government, that government has fostered its growth, and that government has encouraged it to invade the United States to advance its interests.”

Despite the excellent work the Trump administration has done to put a halt to new arrivals, Tren de Aragua continues to cause mayhem in our country.

The gang has taken over hotels, terrorized residents of Aurora, Colorado, and has seemingly put down roots in New York City.

On Friday, a group of 11 suspected Tren de Aragua members allegedly attacked two NYPD officers in Times Square.

A former resident of Aurora who had been a victim of Tren de Aragua pleaded with the federal government at an April House Judiciary hearing to step in and do something.

This is the evil that Maduro’s government and the Biden administration hath wrought.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, is correct here. Tren de Aragua is a hostile, invading force. It has caused enough suffering in its country of origin, and it needs to be stamped out here in the U.S.

Tren de Aragua is an invading force that must be forcibly—and immediately—removed from the U.S. https://t.co/4xzXlKNKVk
— Mike Lee (@BasedMikeLee) May 7, 2025

Nothing in this recent intelligence report suggests that we should act otherwise. It’s being used to create a bogus media narrative directly at odds with the reality on the ground and the sentiments of the American people.

The Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures does not say that the government cannot search your house. Instead, it lays boundaries that officials are supposed to stay within to conduct such a search. It’s all built on the judicial premise of “innocent until proven guilty.”

Lately, Virginians are worried about surveillance on the roads known as “Flock cameras” (Flock is the brand name). These cameras are, according to the manufacturer’s marketing, “solar-powered, motion-activated, and infrastructure-free cameras which are used for license plate reading and can identify and categorize details of vehicles that pass by, including make, vehicle type, color, license plate, state of the plate, and unique features.”

The cameras are colloquially known as license plate readers.

Flock camera systems operate under contract with law enforcement agencies, neighborhood associations, and private property owners, and as of 2024, the company claims to operate in over 5,000 communities across at least 42 states.

Two months ago, the cameras were credited for helping locate a missing girl and apprehend her kidnapper in Texas. And here in Virginia, they were used to locate an estranged mother who took her kids from a Fishersville bus stop to Georgia.

This past week, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin amended a bill to create restrictions on the use of videos taken by the cameras as well as the length of time they could be kept. Under his proposal, law enforcement would only hold onto images for 21 days, down from 30. The restrictions would also bar Virginia police agencies from sharing Flock data with police in other states without a warrant, subpoena, or court order.

The governor’s proposal also withholds expansion of the deployment of these cameras until 2026, after a new General Assembly session convenes in January and passes the bill. If the bill passes in 2026, the Virginia State Police propose to install 5,000-plus units on the highways they patrol.

Defense attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union and the civil liberties law firm The Rutherford Institute argue that the cameras are a form of “warrantless surveillance.” But law enforcement counters that observing a citizen in public places does not require a warrant.

The governor’s amended bill tries to, though in many more words, do what the Fourth Amendment does: acknowledge that sometimes law enforcement needs to search for something or someone, while at the same time, it puts restrictions on that authority so as not to trample rights.

The bill tries to define the proper steps that have to be taken to use that authority as well as defines the punishments for police officers caught misusing the data. One can be charged with a misdemeanor for abusing the technology.

The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police asked the governor to veto the original bill, House Bill 2724, sponsored by Del. Charniele Herring, D-Alexandria. That bill would have limited the use of images captured by the cameras to specific criminal investigations or searches for missing persons and children. Rather than veto the bill, the governor amended it.

John Whitehead of the Charlottesville-based Rutherford Institute said why he opposes the use of the cameras: “Although preemptive precrime programs, driven by surveillance cameras and fusion centers, are popping up all across the country, they are not necessarily making communities any safer, but they are endangering individual freedoms. As such, the threats posed by these license plate readers to First and Fourth Amendment rights cannot be understated.”

The interesting thing is, given the fact that many people have heard about highway cameras and many may have an opinion, little public policy polling has been done on the overall pro-or-con sentiment. Perhaps pollsters feel that public sentiment about such technology, given its already ubiquitous nature, would be a moot point.

The technology genie is not going back into the bottle, so as in 1789 when the Framers created the Fourth Amendment, we need strong guardrails and punishments for people who cross them.

Even in non-election years, improving election integrity is a winning issue for state legislators. Proof of their interest is in the laws adopted by several states in the early months of 2025, laws that have produced considerable improvements in how those states secure and manage their elections.

Since 2021, The Heritage Foundation has been tracking the laws of every state (and the District of Columbia) governing the conduct of elections—local, state, and federal—and ranking them in its Election Integrity Scorecard. With the latest round of updates, recognition is due to Arkansas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming for their legislative improvements.

Utah made the largest strides, improving by a total of eight points. Utah’s Legislature addressed several important issues affecting the accuracy of the state’s voter rolls. The state now uses the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlement Program and jury questionnaires to identify noncitizens who have registered to vote. It also adopted procedures for investigating anomalies in the number of individuals registered at a single address and the validity of a voter registration when an absentee ballot is returned as undeliverable.

Importantly, Utah has moved away from the practice of automatically mailing absentee ballots. By 2029, voters who are eligible for mail-in ballots will have to request them.

Wyoming’s new legislation earned it an impressive five-point gain on the Election Integrity Scorecard. Like Utah, Wyoming has adopted the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlement Program to help officials identify noncitizens who register to vote. Additionally, Wyoming passed a ban on all private funding of the elections, a practice that certain well-heeled groups have used as a partisan device for driving voter turnout in urban districts.

The state also passed a formal ban on ranked choice voting, the controversial practice of instructing voters to pick multiple candidates and then reallocating the votes to produce an artificial majority.

West Virginia, for its part, directed state election officials to remove a registration from the state’s voter rolls when comparisons with other state agency databases reveal that the registration is duplicative or otherwise invalid.

Finally, Arkansas earned a point for requiring an additional witness whenever a care facility administrator assists a resident of that facility with marking a ballot. That brings Arkansas’ total improvement on the year to two points, putting the state among the nation’s best performers at No. 6 overall.

Happily, no state has declined in its overall score through this point in 2025, though it should be remembered that we cannot award a state any less than zero points per question even if the state persists in making counterproductive choices.

States with part-time legislatures will soon be winding down their sessions. But time remains for legislators to make the security of future elections a present priority. Given the progress of the last few months, we can reasonably hope to see more such improvements this year.

In an at times contentious hearing, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent testified before members of the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday. But the hearing started off on a lighter note.

In an initial humorous exchange near the beginning of his testimony, the treasury secretary corrected Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., when she asked him if they had met before. In a seemingly rhetorical question, Waters had asked Bessent if Wednesday had been the first day they had met, to which he answered, “No, ma’am. We actually met one New Year’s Eve in the Bahamas.”

Waters and others at the hearing could be heard laughing at Bessent’s remark. The California congresswoman subsequently asked why she did not remember the occasion, to which the treasury secretary quipped, “You were much better at the Electric Slide than I was.” Waters’ husband, Sid Williams, had served as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas from 1994 to 1998 during the Clinton administration.

.@RepMaxineWaters: "This is the first time we've met, is that correct?"@SecScottBessent: "No, ma'am.

Waters subsequently launched into questioning about Department of Government Efficiency employees being given access to Treasury records.

“They were granted read-only access at Treasury,” Bessent said, adding that the two individuals who had access to the sensitive records were Treasury employees.

“There is no such thing as a DOGE employee. They were Treasury employees,” Bessent explained.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., demanded to know what countries the U.S. was close to striking deals with regarding U.S. tariffs.

The treasury secretary replied that making public what countries the U.S. was negotiating with would undermine the negotiations.

“I’m happy to say there are negotiations going on. I’m not going to reveal the details,” Bessent replied.

Undaunted, Velazquez continued to press for sensitive details related to U.S. trade policy.

When Velazquez asked whether trade negotiations with China were advanced, Bessent answered: “As I said, on Saturday, we will begin, which I believe is the opposite of ‘advanced.’”

When Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., asked Bessent about China’s debt-trap diplomacy, the treasury secretary pointed out that the great power nation should no longer be treated as a developing country by international financial institutions.

“It is time for China to graduate from ‘developing country’ status. It is the second-largest economy in the world,” Bessent said.

The treasury secretary noted that since he assumed office, “the Treasury has repeatedly sanctioned so-called Chinese teapot refiners, who are very large buyers of Iranian oil.”

Bessent offered his own assessment of how the Biden administration had handled the war in Ukraine, arguing that it had been less than robust with it sanctions against the Russian Federation due to fears that the financial punishments would raise energy prices during an election year.

“On one hand, they were giving aid to [the] government of Ukraine. On the other hand, their sanctions against the Russian Federation were very, very weak,” Bessent explained.

“The sanctions were just against some of the lower-level oil companies. There was a price cap that has never worked,” the treasury secretary continued.

Bessent noted that he had read Wednesday morning that Russian oil and gas revenues were down 12% last month, which he said would “put a dent in the Russian war machine.”

The treasury secretary will be heading to Switzerland later this week to begin rescheduled trade negotiations with Chinese officials.

Stefanik accused Wendy Raymond, the president of Haverford College, of not disciplining student groups that made anti-Israel statements that could be interpreted as calls to violence.

“Haverford still doesn’t get it,” the New York lawmaker said.

“This is completely unacceptable, and it’s why this committee has stepped in, because higher education has failed to address the scourge of antisemitism, putting Jewish students at risk at Haverford and other campuses across the country.”

But not everyone on the committee was on board with zeroing in solely on campus antisemitism.

Ranking member Bobby Scott, D-Va., argued antisemitism is one of many forms of discrimination on campuses, and claimed that President Donald Trump’s administration was dismantling the tools to fight it.

“This administration is in the process of dismantling the Office of Civil Rights, and it raises reasonable doubt about the plans for addressing antisemitism on campus, as well as racism, homophobia, sexism, Islamophobia, or the needs of students with disabilities,” said Scott. “Again, we should be focused on trying to solve the problem, rather than just complaining about it.”

Among the other witnesses was American Civil Liberties Union lawyer David Cole, who played devil’s advocate as he argued for the need to protect abhorrent speech from government interference.

“Antisemitic speech, while lamentable, is constitutionally protected. Just like racist speech, sexist speech, and homophobic speech is,” said Cole.

“The Supreme Court protected the rights of the Nazi Party to march … it protected the rights of the Westboro Baptist Church to hurl homophobic slurs at a military funeral,” he recounted.

Beyond just antisemitic speech, the congressmen also pressed the college presidents on their responses to targeted violence against Jewish students, as well as protesters’ encampments.

Michael Kaminsky, a Jewish student at DePaul University who was brutally assaulted by a masked assailant, was on hand as his university’s president, Robert Manuel, spoke.

Manuel grew timid as Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., accosted him for urging students simply to avoid a protest encampment on campus and not calling in police for weeks.

“I would agree with you that we need to do better,” said Manuel.

“I don’t think the issue is more policies, I think the issue is action,” McClain said in reply to his request for understanding.

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—Democrat Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing backlash after images on social media appeared to show the left-wing firebrand cutting the line in front of passengers in wheelchairs while boarding a flight in Atlanta over the weekend.

Republican House Conference Chair Lisa McClain posted the images on her personal campaign account Sunday, arguing Crockett was “abusing her power” by boarding in front of the passengers with disabilities. McClain’s post comes after Crockett called Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair, “Governor Hot Wheels” while speaking at an LGBT advocacy event in Los Angeles in March.

Crockett, who is viewed by some in the media as a rising star within the Democratic Party, has frequently courted controversy during her time in Congress through attacks on President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans that have at times contained profanity.

“SPOTTED Jasmine Crockett with a taxpayer-funded police escort, cutting everyone in line—even making DISABLED people wait,” McClain wrote on X. “Nothing to see here, just the next leader of the Democrats, abusing her power!”

Republican House Conference Chair Lisa McClain shared images to social media appearing to show Democrat Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett boarding prior to passengers in wheelchairs. (McClain’s personal campaign account/Screenshot)

Crockett was the first passenger to board the Delta Airlines flight, Fox News Digital first reported. Crockett boarded prior to at least two passengers in wheelchairs, according to images posted by McClain.

The Texas Democrat disputed that her “hot wheels” comment referred to Abbott using a wheelchair, claiming she was referring to “the planes, trains and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.” Crockett did not respond when pressed by a Daily Caller News Foundation reporter about whether she regretted her remarks toward Abbott.

The congresswoman “liked” Facebook posts referring to Abbott as “hot wheels” in 2021, The Washington Free Beacon previously reported.

The firebrand lawmaker has been floated to succeed Democrat Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly as the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee.

Also over the weekend, Crockett appeared to suggest that college graduates should “use a chair” as a weapon during a commencement address in Jackson, Mississippi.

Crockett’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
