44.
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has repurposed the 6,250-meter space into a mecca of glass as a language of art and science, instead of glass as merely an industrial product.

 45.

The longer I live in Shanghai, the less I go out and explore. The cozy Former French Concession streets have ensnared me with their shady wutong trees, and now I rarely venture beyond the inner ring. It was only for the ‘gram that I decided one summer day to take a little trip to Baoshan, one of Shanghai’s largest and most remote districts. To put into perspective just how 偏远 (pian1yuan3 – faraway) Baoshan is, consider that the district has its own taxi system. Fares start at 11 kuai as compared to center city cabs’ 14, and the drivers refuse to go on the highway.

 46.
Baoshan is mostly fields, oversized Carrefours, and tiny temples. Then there’s the Shanghai Museum of Glass, plopped on a street with a bunch of auto repair shops like a game of “one of these things is not like the others.”

 47.
To get there, you have to take line 1 to Youyi Xi Lu, one stop before the terminal station. Then spend the next 20+ minutes trying to convince a local cabbie to drive you on the highway, give up and decide instead to see a temple, then pay the temple attendant’s friend 50 kuai to drive you to the museum in his own personal car. The temple attendant’s friend was woken up from a nap for this; he isn’t happy, but it’s the first time he’s ever had foreigners in his car, so it’s still his lucky day.

 48.
Or just call a Didi. (Don’t even try arsing yourself with the bus.)

 49.
Why is one of Shanghai’s best museums located here? It’s the site of a former glass factory.

 50.
The Shanghai Museum of Glass has repurposed the 6,250-meter space into a mecca of glass as a language of art and science, instead of glass as merely an industrial product.

 51.
I’m not usually one for museums, much less art museums, so I was surprised by how intensely drawn I was to the aesthetic beauty of SHMOG. Presented without commentary, here are some of my favorite things that I saw.

 125.
Where to take your dog and how to get there

 126.

Two months ago, a miracle of life happened. I gave birth to a 6kg, 5 year old mutt named Liuxia.

 127.

 128.
Her arrival into my life was sudden, and I had to scramble to prepare for this unexpected motherhood. I bought a crate and food and water dishes. I baby-proofed my apartment, which mostly involved moving plants to places the dog couldn’t knock them over. I talked to other, more experienced, parents about how to raise a dog in the big city.

 129.
Taking care of a dog in Shanghai is both easier and harder than I expected. Coming from the suburbs, I first thought that the best place to take a dog in the city would be a park, but the weird thing about parks here is that they’re almost all completely off-limits to dogs (as if the ayis who hold their babies over trashcans for them to pee in would be disgusted by the sight of a little dog urine on grass.) Instead, I decided I had to try my best to incorporate Liuxia into my own life and routines—when I go a restaurant, she goes to a restaurant and when I go out for a walk, she goes out for a walk. Because of parks’ strict no dog policy, I assumed restaurants and other services would be the same way. In this, I was pleasantly surprised.

 130.
The winner of most dog-friendly restaurant in Shanghai: Charlie’s

 131.
If this were an article just about good food in the city, Charlie’s wouldn’t even get a mention. Their burgers are standard and their grilled cheese is dry. But I go there time and again because of their welcoming of my sweet baby.

 132.

 133.
Not only is Charlie’s okay with dogs sitting inside, but they also provide several dog treats on the menu, such as a special doggie ice cream.

 134.
If you bring your dog there, chances are he’ll get a chance to socialize with others of his kind as word has passed down the dog-owning chain that Charlie’s is the place to be.

 135.
Getting there: 91 Changshu Lu

 136.
The winner of most dog-friendly nail salon in Shanghai: Flower Fingers

 137.
I’ve taken Liuxia to a few different nail salons and all have accepted her presence, given that she’s cute and obedient, but Flower Fingers, an upscale chain, gave her water and tolerated her occasional disruptions to the manicure process.

 138.

 139.
Getting there: Like I said, Flower Fingers is a chain, but the store I can personally vouch for is at Wulumuqi and Fuxing.

 140.
The winner of most dog-friendly transportation in Shanghai: Didi

 141.
Unfortunately for us dog parents, the Shanghai metro has a strict no dog policy. That means that the only way to travel with our babies is via taxi. Some cabbies get nervous when they see a passenger with a dog and won’t stop. To avoid this, download the Didi Chuxing app. Didi is like Chinese Uber (yes, an actual Chinese Uber exists, but Didi is better in my experience). I’ve taken Liuxia in several Didis and the drivers have always been happy to have her along for the ride.

 142.
Getting the app: Go to your phone’s app store and search for 滴滴出行. It helps to know some Chinese when using the app, but really the most you need it for is address plug in.

 143.
Honorable mentions:

 144.
Anywhere with outdoor seating has been especially accommodating, but a few restaurants earn special mention for their dog hospitality. Both Boom Boom Bagels and Tres Perros gave Liuxia water. Fix Café always lets dogs inside, and several poodles have been known to play the weekly pub quiz hosted there.

 145.
As always, thanks for reading! Next time on the blog: A top three museum in all of China is located in bumfuck Baoshan

 185.
Since October 19, 2015, I’ve learnt you a thing about fapiao, healthy eating, and dating in Shanghai—a topic which was my most popular of 2015 with 223 views. In 2016, it appears you dorks cared most about Wechat wallet and prescription glasses, two topics which have garnered a total of 475 views to date. In one year, my WordPress has been visited 6634 times, a number which I couldn’t have hoped for when I started this thing.

 186.
So first I want to say thank you. You’re the reason the blog exists and you’re the reason I continue to sit down nearly every week and halfheartedly plunk out some nonsense on my keyboard. The dumbshanghai (AKA me) of October 2015 truly felt that way: dumb. I moved to what is by many standards the largest city in the world and felt like I was in over my head, a head which people have described in the past as “good” and “on my shoulders.” I knew that if I was struggling so much, others in this opulent wasteland might be feeling the same.

 187.
And hey, even though I’m no longer fresh off the boat, I still don’t know what I’m doing most of the time. In fact, I am going to get my hair cut today for the first time since being here because I didn’t know where I could get a good, cheap cut that wouldn’t leave me looking like Monica Geller when she went to the Bahamas.

 188.
In a year’s time, I went from thinking Shanghai was a short pit stop on my journey towards adulthood to realizing that you can’t live here long without this place fundamentally altering your being. There’s something in the air. Some call it pollution; I call it destiny. The longer I live here, the more challenging it will be for me to go back. I love this wild and unpredictable city. It’s my alternate universe, the Upside Down with endless BOGO happy hour deals.

 189.
And so, as I become smarter about navigating Shanghai, my blog has also become an ode to the place that’s hooked its claws into me and gotten into my bones. But this blog is as much mine as it is yours. Please keep reaching out to me with questions and stories. I’d love to find the answers to the queries you’re too lazy to research yourself and share your funny, embarrassing moments with the world so they too can know what an incredible place this is to be.

 190.
Happy Anniversary, dumbshanghai. Thanks for joining me on the journey.

 221.
All about the app Helijia

 222.

When I first started getting my nails done in Shanghai, I paid 110 for them (standard gel, one color). I thought this was a great deal. I mean, I would be paying at least twice that much if I were in the States. Plus, I got to listen to the manicurists talk about how I can get away with wearing orange because of how white I am. Who doesn’t like that?

 223.
Then I discovered Helijia (河狸家).

 224.
Helijia is a women’s beauty app that focuses on nails, hair, facials, botox, exercise, etc. You choose a category (in my case 美甲mei3jia3 – nails) and a style/price and the app sends a certified beautician to your house to complete the look.

 225.
I’d been jonesing for a glass manicure for a while. Glass manicures use a technique whereby small multicolored hologram stickers are placed over a black gel base to mimic the appearance of shattered glass. Knowing the meticulousness that goes into cutting and placing the stickers, I assumed a manicure of this sort would cost me upwards of 150. I was shocked to find a 56 kuai option.

 291.
Every Friday before 3pm, a wonderful thing happens on Changde Lu

 292.

Every Friday before 3pm, a wonderful thing happens on Changde Lu: local Muslims—mostly Xinjiang Uyghurs judging from their language—gather before their mosque services to share the freshest Halal foods with the people (and sometimes dogs) of Shanghai. As jackasses in cars beep their horns wildly to get through the crowd of hungry marketgoers, tented stalls dish out everything from lamb chuanrs to homemade sour yoghurt. The rosy faced kids of the cooks and touts play tag around meat carcasses, and my friend, a white man, notes how children of that ethnicity really bring out his white savior fantasies.

 293.
The market doesn’t take up much of Changde, but its presence is large. You can’t miss the wall of aromatic smoke wafting off of the grills nor the pervasive homeless Mafiosi wheeling around begging for change.

 294.
I snapped a few photos of my time at the market. It’s like when Smart Shanghai sent a photographer there except I’m not paid and used my little iPhone camera, trying and failing to take pictures without anyone noticing. One of the men behind the meat carcasses saw my camera angled towards his precious lamb and gave me a disapproving head shake followed by a smirk. I think he thought I was in on something I wasn’t.

 296.
Incidentally, I failed to get a picture of my favorite food on offer: a chilled milk layer cake that finally made me realize I might be lactose intolerant.

 297.
Have my average-at-best photos inspired you to finally visit the Muslim market? You can do so by going to the corner of Aomen and Changde Lu between 11am and 3pm on a fair-weather Friday. I recommend bringing around 50 kuai to get a full meal.

 298.
As always, thanks for reading! Next time on the blog: I got a 56 kuai glass manicure and you can too!

 369.
I’m as single as a sock in a dryer, but I do know a thing or two about dating me a Chinese guy.

 370.

Oh the ever elusive “Chinese guy.” From the window of your taxi, you see him: jet black hair towering vertically on his head, a bag that says “Yeah, I can afford Armani Exchange,” and the hurried swagger of someone with important places to be. He spits, and no sooner than the mix of saliva, snot, and cigarette residue hits the pavement, you’re smitten. But how do you approach him? Much less date him?

 371.
I’m as single as a sock in a dryer, but I do know a thing or two about dating me a Chinese guy. Or, I know what NOT to do at least. From Tinder message number one to date number eighteen, I’ve compiled a clickbatey listicle summarizing my triumphs and failures, all in my quest to help you find the right Wang.

 372.
DO dazzle him with your Chinese.

 373.

 374.
My most successful dating encounter with a Chinese guy (CG from here on out) was held up by my impeccable Chinese. We met on Tinder, a virtual reality where Pleco could do the talking for me. As our flirtation grew, I learned to master the phone double fisting: my Chinese Wechat phone in one hand and my American Pleco phone in the other. All of a sudden, I knew words like 唯我主义 (solipsism) and 松开 (teleportation). With the help of my ever ready dictionary, I was able to hold my own in conversations ranging from the political to the philosophical, the sports-related to the pop-culture-reference-laced.

 375.
When my Chinese wasn’t quite as good in person, I could just blame it on the nerves that come along with any first date.

 376.
DON’T be a fuck boy.

 377.

 378.
You know, being out of the States for the last year-and-some-time, I’m not sure I entirely understand the meaning of new slang terms like fuck boy (fuck boi, fuccboi?), but I do know that you don’t want to be one when it comes to dating your target CG. CGs are, on the whole, much more relationship oriented than the average Westerner. If you make it past date one, chances are ya boi’s already fantasizing how he’ll introduce you to his mom.

 379.
I once started dating a CG mostly on accident. We held hands at an ice skating rink and when I later asked him what this was that we were doing, he replied “We held hands. We 算男女朋友吧. You’re my girlfriend.”

 380.
DO realize that you come from very different cultures.

 381.

 382.
This DO was my ultimate downfall in the CG game. I treated the relationship like I would any casual fling with an American boy, not understanding that the unspoken rules of this game were much different than those of any other. This was Risk in a Monopoly world.

 383.
When am I supposed to kiss him for the first time?

 384.
When do I tell him about my exes?

 385.
What do I bring his mom when I meet her? (The answer is apparently not broken-stemmed flowers I bought on the back of a scooter.)

 386.
DON’T become his English teacher.

 387.

 388.
As sexy as you might find the roleplay possibilities, don’t become his English teacher. If he wants to improve his English to be with you, the lessons need to be on his own time. Not drawing this line can lead to progressively more Wechats at 1am like “’Resting bitch face’是什么意思? Can I say ‘Resting son-of-bitch face?’”

 389.
This ties back into what I was trying to say earlier: make the relationship clear cut. If you’re in a relationship, this needs to be clarified beyond just holding hands. 507.
I do not support whitewashing, and the casting of Matt Damon in Great Wall is not an example of it

 508.

I first heard about the Great Wall movie from actor Pedro Pascal’s Instagram feed in early 2015. The actor, best known for portraying Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, posted pictures of himself in Shanghai and Beijing with the director and his fellow stars. Although I knew next to nothing of the film, I was immediately eager for its release, in large part because of the force behind it: Zhang Yimou. Zhang, who is arguably the most famous director in China, has a resume that boasts the heartbreaking To Live, which was banned in mainland China for its critical portrayal of the CCP during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution; Hero, a color-driven masterpiece that was the highest grossing Chinese film at the time of its release in 2002; and the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His have always been among my favorite Chinese films. Whether good or not, they are always beautiful to watch.

 509.
You can imagine my disappoint then when the trailer for Great Wall showed up online on July 28th and was instantly hit by a tidal wave of vitriol. Among the mob voices was that of Taiwanese-American actress Constance Wu, who tweeted her disapproval of the casting of Matt Damon in the lead role, calling the decision another in a string of erasures of POC (people of color) from big budget films. Scarlett Johansson was recently cast as a Japanese major in the movie adaptation of the manga series Ghost in the Shell. Tilda Swinton was cast as The Ancient One, an originally Tibetan character in Doctor Strange. Such a practice of casting a white actor in a traditionally non-white role is known as whitewashing. I do not support the practice, and the casting of Matt Damon in Great Wall is not an example of it.

 510.
Let me explain.

 511.
First, Damon is not taking the role away from a POC. In the film, he plays a white mercenary whose arrival in China signifies a major plot point. Yes, the movie takes place 1000 years ago. Yes, there were non-Chinese people in China 1000 years ago. But why should the historicity of the film even matter? It’s a fucking monster movie for crying out loud. Without having seen the film, how is anyone to know exactly how Damon’s character shows up in it? The trailer features his face heavily, but with a budget of $135 million, the film needs to use all it has in its arsenal to draw in a large audience.

 512.
Although Great Wall is backed by US production company Legendary Entertainment, it was created not with an American audience in mind but a Chinese one. If you don’t believe me, just look at the release dates. The film comes out in China nearly two months before it does in the United States. Even the film’s primary language being English is not an indication that Great Wall is directed towards an English-speaking audience. The language choice is due in part to what I like to call the “Hello Kitty phenomenon.” Hello Kitty is popular in America because she’s seen as Japanese. Hello Kitty is popular in Japan because she’s seen as American. Ultimately, she is both and she is neither. If the film is in English and stars a white American actor, a Chinese audience will see it as largely American, and American culture, for better or worse, is bankable in China. The casting of Matt Damon can also be explained by the “Hello Kitty phenomenon.” A Chinese movie-goer, knowing Damon from his wholly American films, will see his inclusion as a sign that Great Wall is an American film. An American movie-goer, familiar more with Damon than with fellow stars Andy Lau or Lu Han, will be more inclined to watch a Chinese-helmed film.

 513.
American films have been doing extremely well in China as of late. The World of Warcraft movie, which tanked in the US, raked in $156 million during its five-day Chinese opening. The Martian, starring none other than Matt Damon, shot to the top of the box office the weekend it was released, beating out several Chinese films. With a movie industry set to outpace Hollywood, China is the newest destination for American big-budget films. In the past, American movies have courted a Chinese audience by throwing in an Asian supporting actor or by including a scene or two set in China/Hong Kong/Macau. Great Wall takes it ten steps further, and in the process, completely ingratiates itself towards its target demographic.

 514.
It’s no surprise that the loudest voices crying “whitewashing” on Great Wall come largely from those who know very little about the current state of the Chinese film industry. Would you believe me if I said the highest grossing Chinese film of all time is a science fantasy romantic comedy about a mermaid who undertakes a plot to kill a business tycoon set to destroy the oceanic wildlife reserve in which her kind lives? (If your answer is no, you should really watch Mermaid to get an idea of just how unique the Chinese movie market is.)

 515.
Zhang Yimou’s Great Wall isn’t for you! It will undoubtedly make an impressive haul from the American box office, but its target is China, where an over-the-top monster movie starring a beloved (white) actor might just be exactly what a local audience is looking for.

 516.
Still don’t believe me that the casting of Matt Damon is not born out of racism? Don’t take my word for it; take Zhang Yimou’s:

 517.

“In many ways The Great Wall is the opposite of what is being suggested. For the first time, a film deeply rooted in Chinese culture, with one of the largest Chinese casts ever assembled, is being made at tent pole scale for a world audience. I believe that is a trend that should be embraced by our industry…There are five major heroes in our story and he [Damon] is one of them — the other four are all Chinese…I have not and will not cast a film in a way that was untrue to my artistic vision. I hope when everyone sees the film and is armed with the facts they will agree.”

 518.
What do you think? Should Matt Damon have been cast as a lead actor in Great Wall? Add your opinion in the comments!

 544.
I hope that none of you ever has to use this information, but it’s here for you if you do.

 545.

If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you will have noticed a rigid format for all my titles: How/What/Where/Why the hell… With the advent of my fortieth post, it’s time for a change. Having been in Shanghai for just over a year now, I’m no longer the dumb expat I once was. Of course, I still have moments of idiocy like anyone else, but most of them are related to being a fallible human being and not to being an ignorant foreigner. As such, I’ve decided to open up my scope of topics. You may still see the occasional post that fits in with the old format, but more and more you will start to see new styles and material from me. I still relate best to humor that’s just a little off, and I promise you that comicality will not go away entirely.

 546.
That being said, today’s topic is one particularly unsuited to my old format. While humor is a valid coping mechanism, it would be callous for me to use it when providing information about resources for sexual assault victims in Shanghai.

 547.
I hope that none of you ever has to use this information, but it’s here for you if you do.

 548.
What the police can do:

 549.
If you’ve dealt at all with Chinese police, as most of us have (at least in the registration process), you may feel they would be useless when it comes to handling serious crime. Especially in a country where spousal rape is still not considered illegal, it may come as a surprise to you that the police actually take sexual assault seriously.

 550.
It’s difficult for the police to prosecute the perpetrator of a crime with no evidence. In order to get evidence, there are several things you can do. If you are at all able during the assault, scream loudly to attract witnesses to the crime. Of course the impetus is not on you to prevent the assault (because assault is in no way the victim’s fault); however, having the wherewithal to immediately get the police on your side can only help you in the long run. (Source: the police)

 551.
As soon as you can, call 110, Chinese 911. If you shout 英文、英文、英文 (English, English, English) into the phone, the service will connect you with an English speaking operator. Even someone like me who has been learning Chinese for years would be uncomfortable stumbling through an emergency call in the language.

 552.
What the embassy can do:

 553.
If you decide to seek legal recourse, ask the police for a rape kit, a word I’ve thankfully never needed to learn in Chinese but Google translates to 强奸成套工具 (qiang2jian1 cheng2tao4 gong1ju4). For much more detailed information on your legal options, consult the U.S. embassy’s Victims Assistance Handout: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/china/198266/suyu/CHINA_Victims_assistance_handout.pdf.

 554.
For non-U.S. citizens, consult your own embassy’s website for more information.

 555.
Who to talk to:

 556.
Want to talk confidentially about your assault? Consider calling Lifeline Shanghai at 62798990. From Smart Shanghai: “Lifeline is a support hotline that takes calls from anyone (anyone that speaks English, that is), about anything. They answer the phone from 10am-10pm, 365 days a year. Some people call to find directions to the hospital; others call when they’re out on the ledge (very rare, thankfully). When they get a call, they provide emotional support with an emphasis on confidential, nonjudgmental listening. They’re not therapists, they’re not counselors; they’re more like guides, if anything.” Unfortunately, Lifeline volunteers aren’t specially trained to deal with sexual assaults, but they can point you toward other resources when they’ve done all they can.

 557.
You can also reach out to RAINN, America’s largest anti sexual violence organization via their website www.rainn.org.

 558.
You’re not alone. You will be listened to.

 586.
Shanghai is a city that reveals itself slowly.

 587.

While I will argue to my grave that Shanghai is far superior to Beijing, I will give it to Beijing that it’s just better for tourists. It has the “China highlights” that out of towners like to mark off their checklists: the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City. Shanghai, in contrast, is a city that reveals itself slowly. It doesn’t have many must-dos for tourists beyond the Bund and the FFC. What it does have, though, it has in spades.

 588.
I’m no replacement for a guidebook, and what I give you is not an exhaustive list. Instead, I have carefully selected what I believe to be Shanghai’s best spots to take out of town guests. I will elaborate on my top three and include a brief list of the runners up below.

 589.
Hongkou

 590.
“What the hell, dumbshanghai? Hongkou? I don’t trust your opinion anymore!” you might be saying.

 591.
Hongkou is much more than international schools and football stadiums. If you get off the metro at Hailun Lu and walk towards Haerbin Lu, you’ll discover a charming historical neighborhood off the maps of most non-locals.

 592.
On one side of the road lie as-yet-undemolished shikumen-style houses with vegetable plants growing outside. On the right, just over a small canal, stand renovated 1930s factory buildings, now housing restaurants, bars, theatres, cafes, and the like. Old smokestacks have been outfitted with moving LED lights and even external pipework has been made to look artsy.

 593.

 594.
While you’re there, check out Canil, the dog café in building 1933, which used to be a slaughterhouse. There’s no cover charge to enter, but you are expected to spend at least 50 kuai per person on food and drinks.

 596.
Also consider going to see a show at the Pearl, an historic, intimate theatre specializing in burlesque. The theatre’s very existence seems a tribute to the lawless glamour of old Shanghai. Find it at 471 Zhapu Lu.

 598.
The Propaganda Poster Art Center

 599.
I’m not one for art museums. I just don’t get art, and I’m okay with that. The Propaganda Poster Art Center, on the other hand, is one of my favorite tourist attractions in Shanghai. Operated out of the basement of a random apartment complex, the center is extremely well curated, telling the recent history of China, good and bad, through posters full of dramatic colors and idyllic faces. Below each poster is an exhaustive explanation of the artwork written in both Chinese and English.

 600.
I’ve been to the center twice. The first time, I saw some of the last remaining Cultural Revolution-era big character posters—citizen-authored denouncements of rightists. After the Cultural Revolution, the posters were ordered to be destroyed. The second time I went to the center, the big character posters were noticeably missing. Hopefully they were just being cleaned.

 601.

 602.
The Propaganda Poster Art Center is a worthwhile trip for the gift shop alone. You can buy copies of all the artwork, sure, but you can also shell out a few hundred kuai for a Cultural Revolution textbook, a Red Guard armband, an original Little Red Book, and more.

 603.
The center, located at 868 Huashan Lu, costs 20RMB to explore.

 604.
Qibao

 605.
If you don’t have time to take your guest to Suzhou, or even Zhujiajiao, take them to Qibao. Situated on line 9, this little water town within Shanghai is the perfect way to spend a nice afternoon. It’s known as the street food epicenter of Shanghai. I recommend the fried quail eggs on a stick.

 606.
Qibao is also good for cheap shopping. When I was there, I bought a 15 kuai oversized Moschino-style t-shirt that says William in word art.

 607.
