90.
Parts of a NEG wind turbine on Sunday fell into a forest area in the wind farm Hainhaus-Bad König in Germany’s Hesse state.

 91.
No one was hurt.

 92.
According to current findings, two assembly flaps and all three gap covers of the three wind turbine blades fell to the ground for yet unknown reasons, local police said.

 93.
Operator WHS Enertec confirmed to Recharge that the incident occurred at a V82-1.5MW model. The older model is from NEG Micon, a wind turbine manufacturer which merged with Vestas more than 20 years ago. The turbine has not been under Vestas’ service for over ten years.

 95.
“Late on Sunday morning … walkers reported suspicious noises and observations of a wind turbine that was still rotating in the Hainhaus/Bad-König-Kimbach wind farm area,” the police said its report.

 96.
“Larger components were also lying below the system on the ground and in the adjacent forest area.”

 98.
Article continues below the advert

 99.

 100.
The police and fire brigade were immediately dispatched to close the adjacent forest paths and a nearby state road. The turbine was switched off by a technician and shut down as it could not be ruled out that other components would come loose from the machine.

 101.
Technicians are being sent to the site of the debris today to determine the possible cause of the damage, the police said.

 102.
Christian Schmale from WHS was quoted as saying on ARD that he suspects that “loose parts in the rotation led to the damage” at the 20-year-old turbine.

 103.
“This type of defect has actually occurred for the first time.”

 254.
Groundbreaking geothermal technology that promises to provide ‘limitless clean power from the Earth’s core’ has received backing from the European Investment Bank to help the developer build its first commercial power plant.

 255.
The bank has handed Canadian start-up Eavor a €45m ($48m) loan to support the construction of its ‘closed-loop’ geothermal plant in Germany near Munich.

 256.

 257.
That project had already received a €91.6m grant – around a third of its expected cost – from the EU Innovation Fund last year.

 258.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the construction site last August, while promising to multiply geothermal heating in the country tenfold by 2030.

 259.
This will be the first time Eavor has implemented its technology on a commercial scale. It built a pilot plant in Alberta, Canada, that has been running since 2019.

 260.
Founded in 2017, Eavor claims it can generate gigawatts of baseload and dispatchable renewable energy anywhere in the world by harnessing the power of the Earth’s core.

 261.

 262.
Article continues below the advert

 263.

 264.
Eavor proposes drilling several kilometres deep – to depths not unfamiliar to the oil and gas industry – and injecting water to power electricity-generating turbines.

 265.
The method takes advantage of the average 30°C increase in temperature for each kilometre drilled.

 266.
Eavor’s crucial innovation compared to other geothermal projects is then turning that hole into a closed loop. Cold water is poured down one end of this loop and will turn to steam as it travels horizontally along kilometres below ground, before returning up another pipe to the surface.

 267.

 271.

 272.

 273.
Eavor says that not only would this loop generate constant energy but it would essentially power itself as the cold water is constantly heated underground before the heat is extracted and it cycles around again, without the need for a pump – a phenomenon known as a thermosiphon.

 274.
BloombergNEF founder Michael Liebreich, who chairs Eavor’s advisory board, previously told Recharge that, if it can be delivered affordably, the technology is “pretty damn close to the holy grail as you can get.”

 275.
Eavor has secured backing from the likes of BP, Chevron and Japan’s Chubu Electric. A further $130m in funding arrived in October from the Canadian government and Microsoft among other investors.

 276.
Eavor’s German plant will “provide low-carbon heating to thousands of households and businesses” and is “an example of the role the geothermal industry will play on the road to net-zero,” said the EU’s climate action commissioner Wopke Hoekstra.

 277.
All four loops at the plant are slated to be built by 2027.

 297.
The UK government is issuing new licenses allowing fossil fuel companies to explore for oil and gas in previously declared North Sea offshore wind zones.

 298.
The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has offered 31 licences in its latest oil and gas round, it said on Friday, with a number overlapping with areas earmarked for wind power.

 299.

 300.
“The granting of an exploration licence does not eliminate the use of that area for offshore wind, and we wholly support the use of offshore wind as a means of power generation,” said the NSTA.

 301.
“The NSTA has worked closely to manage any potential overlaps and for the first time have agreed a new co-location clause which means that for any activity to take place oil and gas operators will have to come to an agreement with wind lease holder[s] on how to proceed before further permission for activity is granted.”

 302.
This mechanism will it said “resolve spatial overlaps and to support co-existence of these important industries.”

 303.
RenewableUK CEO Dan McGrail said: “Whilst we respect that the North Sea is a shared space, with the natural environment and other industries to consider, the government should be crystal clear that their priority is renewables over oil and gas.

 304.

 305.
Article continues below the advert

 306.

 307.

 308.
“Offshore wind is going to be the backbone of our future system, not fossil fuels.”

 309.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has regularly provoked the wrath of the renewables sector and environmental groups during his time in office.

 310.
Last year he faced uproar for rolling back on green goals – including for electric vehicles and heat pumps – and issuing oil and gas licences in an apparent bid to revive his ailing re-election campaign

 311.
The anti-green swing has done nothing to revive his political fortunes, however, with his Conservative Party suffering a string of embarrassing by-election losses – while incoming results from council elections on Thursday paint a bleak picture for Sunak’s party.

 312.

 313.
The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit and BloombergNEF have found in separate recent analyses that the UK is now going backwards on its energy security and climate goals at least partly due to Sunak’s policies.

 314.
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said that: “To strengthen our energy security and grow the economy, we want to maximise the huge energy potential of the North Sea.

 315.
“We will continue to need oil and gas over the coming decades as we increase our share of renewables; that’s why we welcome the work by the NSTA and the Crown Estates to facilitate the co-location of wind and oil and gas projects as the offshore space gets busier.”

 316.

 317.
Should the new licences provoke conflict between fossil fuels and offshore wind developers, it would not be the first time they have been at loggerheads in the North Sea.

 318.
In 2022, Danish renewables giant Orsted clashed with BP over an overlapping zone, accusing the supermajor of trying to force its 2.6GW Hornsea 4 development out of the area.

 319.
Hornsea 4 is on a list seen by Recharge of offshore wind projects facing overlap with the latest oil & gas exploration licenses.

 320.
Others include the giant Norfolk Boreas and Vanguard projects now owned by RWE, and several areas in the Dogger Bank zone where SSE and Equinor and currently building 3.6GW of capacity.
